Since the first IMPC took place in London in 1952 there have been many developments in our understanding of flotation, both in terms of chemical and physical factors influencing the process. Many of these developments have been captured in the proceedings of thirty congresses that have taken place since that first event, as well as in numerous journal papers and special volumes dedicated to flotation. This paper attempts to highlight the individual contributions which many eminent researchers and engineers have made over the past 70 years towards extending our understanding of, especially, the effects of chemical factors on flotation. Although the focus is mainly on more fundamental aspects, it seems that the ‘pull’ of practice has often preceded the ‘push’ from laboratory-based research. As the fundamental understanding of the role of chemical factors on flotation continues to be developed, the major challenge remains to transfer this knowledge effectively into the domain of operations of this profoundly complex process.

"The Collieries Research Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa is developing a coherent system of programs to aid in the full spectrum of activities arising in the planning of new as well as operating mining enterprises. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the design and application of two subsystems in the complex.One of these subsystems is an initial version of a production simulator. This program draws upon a model of a mining enterprise and simulates the operational and financial aspects of a set of alternative mine production plans.These plans are specified in terms of proposed sequences of operations. Details such as reserves, production rates, resource requirements and so on, are taken from the model.Physically, the model takes the form of a cross-referenced data base, maintained by means of a general file maintenance system which is another subsystem described.The paper concludes with a description and analysis of the first practical application of the two programs."

In the mineral processing industry, Ni-Cu-Fe-S converter matte is leached to remove base metals from a concentrate containing platinum group metals (PGMs). We investigated the atmospheric leaching process to develop a better understanding of the leaching behaviour of the base metals (Cu, Fe, and Ni) and the PGMs, in particular Ru, Ir, and Rh with respect to key process variables, acid concentration, and Cu concentration under oxidative and non-oxidative conditions. With oxidative leaching, a higher initial acid concentration resulted in higher Cu, Ni, and Fe extractions, as well as faster leaching reaction rates. A higher initial acid concentration also resulted in faster precipitation of Cu, Ru, and Ir under oxidizing conditions. Under non-oxidative conditions, Ni and Fe extraction was much slower, and the effect of initial acid concentration on Cu precipitation was less pronounced. The initial Cu concentration had a slightly smaller effect on the leaching behaviour of Fe and Ni, as well as precipitation of Ru, Ir and Rh. Moreover, a higher initial Cu concentration suppressed both Ni and Fe leaching and had a slight inhibiting effect on the precipitation behaviour of Cu, Ru, and Ir.

"A computer system for the design of open pits to mine stratiform orebodies has been developed for use at Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Ltd. The particular requirements of such a system, for example, the accuracy of representation of geological detail and the ability to follow footwalls, arc described in this paper, together with the methods that have been adopted to satisfy them.A modified version of the Open Pit Design Program of Rio Tinto Zinc Consultants, Ltd. is incorporated in the system and the geological data are converted into a form usable by the computer by means of a pencil follower. Some of the uses which have been made of the system are described, with reference to the long- and medium-term planning of the Nchanga Open Pit, the major producing pit at Chingola Division."

Mineral royalties are one of the oldest forms of mining taxation, and were initially introduced to extract economic rents from mining. Over time, the royalty regime has become more complex as it was identified as an important policy instrument that can achieve more multi-faceted outcomes. Such a multi-tiered approach in the use of the royalty instrument is also the case with South Africa. With South Africa’s new mineral royalty regime now in place for ten years, it is perhaps time to assess its impact and effectiveness. To carry out this assessment, an econometric evaluative study was undertaken using four major commodities in South Africa, namely gold, platinum, iron ore, and coal. The study explored five different policy options for government to consider and tested them to determine the most favourable one that will realize the regime’s policy objectives. After the assessment, two major options stood out. Hence, this paper seeks to highlight which of the two options is the most favourable for consideration by policymakers. Based on that study, we find that the current structure is effective, but also recommend that the factors in the formula for refined minerals be ‘modified’ to reduce the capped profitability ratio from the current 60% to 30% and the maximum royalty rate for refined minerals from 5% to 3%. The minimum rate of 0.5% during times of depressed mineral prices and no or low profitability will not be affected.

"Mineral Resource estimation (MRE) and classification are highly dependent on the confidence in the model of the orebody geometry, known as the geological model, within which the estimates are constrained. An understanding of the geology of a deposit is thus fundamental to the Mineral Resource evaluation process. The geological model is a function of the structural and depositional complexity of the geology captured by drilling information, which is limited in the early stages of a project. The information effect has a significant impact in terms of the interpretation of the geology as well as the estimation of grade continuity and the resultant risk associated with the Mineral Resource estimate and classification.Therefore, as new drilling information becomes available, it is necessary to update and refine the geological model to appropriately constrain the resource estimates. The grade information is also updated, including statistics and the spatial correlation characteristics. This refinement is based on geological interpretations derived from the drillhole information that becomes available throughout the life of the mine; orebody knowledge that comes from working experience of the deposit, as well as familiarity with the software package used for modelling, is also important.In updating, the potential to identify new resources in previously unknown areas may be realized. The opposite may also occur where previous interpretations of ore continuity are refuted. Both scenarios could result from a better understanding of the geology of the deposit and thus a more realistic MRE, which reduces geological risk. This paper describes how newly drilled advanced grade-control holes for a gold deposit in Mali were used to refine the 3D geological model for the deposit in an attempt to identify the potential for additional oxide ore using conventional geostatistical evaluation techniques."

South Africa holds approximately three-quarters of the world?s viable chromite ore resources and dominates the global production of ferrochrome. Albeit completely unintended, small amounts of Cr(VI) are formed during ferrochrome production. Certain Cr(VI)species are regarded as carcinogenic, hence making the treatment of some ferrochrome waste materials necessary. In this paper, the Cr(VI) treatment strategies currently employed by the South African ferrochrome producers are investigated by means of a literature review and a questionnaire survey. From the discussion, it is evident that various treatment strategies are available to deal with Cr(VI)-containing waste in the ferrochrome industry. However, by far the most commonly applied treatment strategy remains the aqueous reduction of Cr(VI) with ferrous iron. The advantages and the correct application of this strategy, together with the disadvantages and pitfalls, are argued. Innovative improvements on historic practices are also discussed

"SynopsisGoing beyond transformation claims contained in employment equity scorecards and industry compliance reports, this article provides qualitative insight into the initiatives employed and challenges experienced by mining companies in a quest to transform the mining industry. Perceptions expressed during in-depth interviews with 10 senior executives showed that the assumption that mining companies are reluctant to transform is erroneous. Results from this study suggest buy-in and commitment to transformation. This article describes specific initiatives undertaken by mining companies to transform. The most notable initiatives include staff recruitment efforts to appoint historically disadvantaged South Africans (HDSAs), staff development initiatives, as well as community development. The findings furthermore contextualize the challenges experienced by industry participants in their quest to transform. Despite accusations that industry participants are not taking responsibility for the implementation of the transformation agenda, government needs to recognize that they too have a role to play and need to appreciate and assist in the current challenges experienced by the industry.IntroductionWe need a mining sector that works. Mining employs over half a million people. It is the biggest earner of foreign exchange in our country. It also contributes about 20 billion rand directly to tax revenue. Mining also makes a far larger contribution as a buyer of goods and services, and a supplier of inputs to other sectors of our economy and other economies around the globe’ said President Jacob Zuma during the 2014 State of the Nation Address (Zuma, 2014). However, despite apparent commitment from government, enforced compliance with social and labour plans, regulations and Mining Charter targets, the South African mining industry is slow to gain local and international investor trust (Deloitte & Touche, 2013; Mashego, 2013).Industry players acknowledge that their context has changed – creating various challenges (Davis, 2014). In the past few years, such challenges included subdued commodity prices, increased working costs, constrained infrastructure, and high labour costs, coupled with poor levels of productivity, strained labour-management relations, an uncertain regulatory environment, and the inevitable maturation of the industry (Deloitte & Touche, 2013; Davenport, 2014). Mining affected communities also became more cognisant of their rights, and politicians more vocal in their expectations from their relationships with the mining giants (Davis, 2014). One of the main issues that contributed to the difficult operating conditions was claims from organized labour and Minister Shabangu that this industry is too slow to transform. Specific claims were made in terms of employment equity, fair salaries and wages for mineworkers, housing and living conditions, health and safety issues, and general working conditions (Limpitlaw et al., 2005; Miningmx, 2013; Shabangu, 2010). These claims were followed by what Gill Marcus, Reserve Bank Governor, explained as ‘unprotected strike action [that] has escalated into an uncontrolled, violent and unlawful landscape, led by a mob mentality in the absence of formal and recognised leaders’ (Mavuso,2013)."

We present a discrete event simulator, TSJSim (Truck-Shovel JaamSim Simulator), for evaluating the stochastic and dynamic operational variables in a truck-shovel system. TSJSim offers four truck allocation strategies: Fixed truck assignment (FTA), Minimizing shovel production requirement (MSPR), Minimizing truck waiting time (MTWT), and Minimizing truck semi-cycle time (MTSCT) including the genetic algorithm (GA) optimization and the frozen dispatching algorithm (FDA) optimization rules. Multiple decision points along the haul routes for all the trucks close to the decision points were included in the model. The simulation results indicate that the trends associated with production tons and queuing time utilizing the four truck allocation strategies (MSPR, MTWT, FDA, and GA) all demonstrated similar patterns as the fleet size varied. As the system fleet size increased, the system production tons under these strategies at first increased significantly and then remained relatively constant; the queuing time relating to these strategies showed a positive relationship with the system fleet size. The bunching time decreased when the truck allocation strategies were applied in the model. In the simulated truck-shovel network system with multiple traffic intersections, by assigning the trucks at the intersections, both productivity and fleet utilization increased.

A new branch of the Institute-the Zululand Branch- was formed at the end of last year. After many months of preparation and perusal of address lists, it was realized that branch serving our members north of the Tugela was long overdue. A small steering committee consisting of Messrs John Selby, Dawid de Wet Smith, and Bill Kluckow got the branch of to a roaring start. They organized the inaugural meeting, which was held at the Richards Hotel in Richards Bay on 28th October,1993. Out of a possible 70 members residing in a 100 km radius, over half attended that first meeting!

Namibia's newest mining enterprise, the Navachab Gold Mine, was officially opened by President Sam Nujomo during June 1990. The mine is a joint venture between Erongo Mining & Exploration Company Limited, Metal Mining Corporation of Canada, and Rand Mines Windhoek (Pty) Ltd. Erongo has a 70 per cent interest in the mine, while Metal Mining and Rand Mines hold 20 per cent and 10 per cent respectively. Anglo American Corporation and its associates hold two-thirds of Erongo shares and CDM (Pty) Ltd one-third. The Mine is managed by Erongo Mining & Exploration Company. The property is located some 10 km southwest of the town of Karibib and 170 km west-northwest of the Namibian capital of Windhoek (Fig. 1), the name of the Mine being taken from the farm on which the gold deposits were discovered. Navachab is an opencast operation and was brought into production in December 1989 at a cost of around R84 milion-RS,2 million under budget. The plant is designed to treat 840 kt annually at an average gold grade of 2,6 g/t. This wil produce 1900 kg of gold per year, which at today's prices will earn Namibia more than R60 million in foreign exchange.

Efficient recovery of titanium from titaniferous magnetite ores continues to be a promising, yet unrealised opportunity, despite significant occurrences of titaniferous magnetite deposits worldwide and the existence of established industrial-scale practices. Current smelting processes only recover iron and vanadium, while the titanium is discarded in the waste slag. These slags are stockpiled and present massive environmental challenges, while still containing value as residual iron, vanadium and titanium. The complex mineralisation of these deposits does not allow for a significant opportunity to separate the titanium and magnetite minerals through normal physical upgrading processes. An upgrading process is therefore required to derive economic value. An efficient process technology could create an opportunity to unlock all three valuable commodities. South Africa’s Bushveld Complex, the largest known deposit of its kind in the world, is known for the high vanadium content but is also associated with relatively high concentrations of titaniferous magnetite. The quality of the Bushveld Complex was one of the drivers for the establishment of the Highveld Steel and Vanadium Company in the mid-1960s. The unfortunate demise of Highveld Steel and Vanadium created an opportunity to review current practices and evaluate the best available process for this complex ore in the context of the three elements of interest. Past and current processes, the nature of these deposits and the potential to recover titanium are assessed to highlight the potential of fluxless smelting of titaniferous magnetite to produce a titania-rich slag as feedstock to the pigment, titanium metal industry in conjunction with recovery of iron and vanadium. Ilmenite smelting practices are proposed as a suitable alternative to achieve the goal, namely sustainable processing. Approximately 20% of current world copper cathode output is produced using a hydrometallurgical process route, generally referred to as the leach–solvent extraction–electrowinning flowsheet. Since its commercialization in the late 1960s, steady improvements in the performance and efficiency of the solvent-extraction reagents and equipment, combined with significant developments in leaching and electrowinning, have made an ever-widening range of ore types amenable to this technology. Following successful implementation on all major continents, a large proportion of growth in recent years derives from the re-emergence of copper solvent extraction in the Central African Copperbelt. This review provides a brief history of the development and evolution of copper solvent extractants and mixer-settler contactors, and the significance of the Copperbelt region in achieving commercialization and acceptance of the technology. The opportunities and challenges presented by the abundant high-grade oxide ores of the Copperbelt are contrasted with the processing of solutions derived from the low-grade mixed oxide–sulfide ore bodies that are prevalent in other geological regions. The current status of hydrometallurgical copper production in the African Copperbelt, within a global context, and a medium-term outlook for the technology are discussed.

The Breakfast was held at the Riverside Holiday Inn, and was attended by 50 senior and middle managers in organizations in and around the Vaal Triangle, as well as by Richard Beck, the President of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

In dealing with transformational aspects, the South African Constitution aspires for a balance between attempts to broadly represent the country’s demographics in the way in which organizations are structured and the need to maintain the necessary skills to ensure continual retention of skills for optimum and efficient organizational performance. Through the Mining Charter, government aimed to redress gender and racial imbalances in the mining industry as part of transforming the demographic representation of mining companies to include black people, women, and people living with disabilities in all job levels up to top management. While the Constitution calls for an appropriate balance between demographic representation and competency, this aspiration for mining poses challenges for companies due to the proficient and competent skills needed in this industry. To this end, the South African mining industry has been subjected to substantial criticism from government regarding the slow progress of transformation. The mining industry justifies its slow pace of transformation by pointing at inconsistent, varying legislation and definitions governing transformation, limited skills available from historically disadvantaged groups, and cautioning not to compromise the sustainability of mining companies by marginalizing white males and white youth with the objective of addressing racial imbalances. This lack of understanding between industry and the government has led to considerable confusion regarding the accountability of stakeholders in transforming the industry. This article presents the perspectives of ten mining executives on transformation in the South African mining industry. The theoretical description of transformation, as well as other mining stakeholders’ interpretations of transformation. is presented. Qualitative data from interviews with mining executives demonstrates their understanding of transformation through rich descriptions, interpretations, and implications in their contexts. The findings demonstrate that transformation in the mining industry is not simply about race and gender, but about cultural change, a change in mind-sets, embracing diversity, equalizing rights and opportunities, and attaining social justice. Moreover, transformation is clearly a gradual process. The article concludes with a recommendation for the definition of transformation to be corroborated with the views of mining executives and that of the Constitution of South Africa. This will create an overarching, simplified definition of transformation that can be accepted and interpreted by all stakeholders.

The southern African region has a high concentration of mineral resources and supplies much of the world?s platinum demand. As a result, the international community watches South Africa to understand the impact of supply on global markets. An analysis of supply certainty and risk plays a key role in the future of growing demand in various sectors. The southern African platinum industry experienced substantial growth in the early part of the 21st century, resulting in bullish forecasts for growth during the period of 2000?2006. However, southern African platinum producers saw a significant drop in production over the following three years as a result of many dynamic factors in operations and the global economy. Between 2006 and 2009 there was a million-ounce shortfall between forecast and actual production. This was raised as a concern at the Fourth International Platinum Conference in 2010 by Stephen Forrest during his keynote address, specifically regarding the lack of understanding in the market of the causes of this shortfall and any action that was being taken to address them. This paper reviews publicly available information in the media and corporate reports and communications for the period January 2006 to December 2009. In addition, several interviews were held with key stakeholders in the industry to provide further perspective. The paper then highlights the main reasons that are reported to have affected the loss in production over the period and discusses the possible implications of the information that the mining industry does and does not disclose regarding platinum supply.

Some observations on 'ancient' mining at Phalaborwa C. E. MORE. B.A. (Pretoria) (Visitor) A brief account is given of historical references to the Phalaborwa area, the first being to the mountain of copper and iron sought by Francois de Cuiper in 1725. These are followed by a description of several finds in the area, which are related to finds described in the literature and to Bantu tradition on the subject. Phalaborwa is one of the earliest known mining sites in the Republic of South Africa, Loolekop having been a mining centre, as shown by carbon-14 dating, since 770 A.D.

During the past ten years there has been an upsurge of interest in the development of selective ion exchange resins and solvents, and of ion-exchange and solvent extraction equipment tailored to the special requirements of mineral-processing circuits. It is therefore not surprising that the recent Symposium on Ion Exchange and Solvent Extraction in Mineral Processing, held at the National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM) on 7th and 8th February, 1980, was a resounding success. This Symposium, organized jointly by NIM. "Accurate delineation of the contact between a kimberlite pipe and country rock at production level depths is a challenge due to limited geological data. Geological information is obtained from widely spaced diamond core boreholes which are drilled either from surface or from higher mining levels within the pipe. Kimberlite pipe/country rock contacts are notoriously irregular and variable, further reducing the confidence in contact positions defined by the drill-holes. At Finsch Diamond Mine (FDM), the opportunity arose to further improve the confidence in the contact positions relative to the planned slot (end) positions of each sublevel cave tunnel during the development stage of these tunnels. As a result, the accuracy of the 3D geological model has improved.The use of diamond drill core for this purpose is expensive due to site establishment requirements. The lengthy time taken during site establishment also delays the development of tunnels and support cycles, thereby extending the completion dates. FDM has reduced delays during development by adopting percussion drilling, in conjunction with gamma ray logging. The S36 drill rig is mounted on a moveable platform and does not require a costly and lengthy site establishment. The holes are generally drilled (0°/flat) on grade elevation, and these holes could also be drilled from the rim tunnels (developed in waste) into the kimberlite pipe. A single-boom production drill rig is normally used to drill holes about 20 m in length.On completion of the contact delineation drilling, gamma logging of the holes is conducted using the GeoVista geophysical sonde (or probe) to log the natural gamma signature of the dolomite/ kimberlite contact. The advantage of this tool is that the readings are continuous within centimetre intervals, and due to contrasting characteristics between kimberlite (rich in clay minerals) and dolomite, the contact position can be determined accurately. The better definition of contact positions also adds value to tunnel stopping distance in terms of developing the tunnel’s slot at the optimum distance from the contact (easier blasting of longhole rings, avoidance of contact overbreak and premature waste ingress, and other matters relating to extraction of ore from these tunnels). This method is highly successful and has reduced development costs (on-time completion), improved definition of the pipe’s contact position for geological modelling, improved blast design, and mitigated early waste ingress by maintaining the contact’s integrity."
