Bell, Chairman of the Department of Metallurgy at the University of Strathclyde, Scotland, was there to lead the School, along with 12 local lecturers, who had gathered at the Hotel Devonshire at 07h30 for an Authors' Breakfast. Finsch Mine is a Kimberlite diamond mine located at Lime Acres in the Northern Cape of South Africa. The mine was founded in 1961 and started surface-mining in 1964. Underground production commenced in 1990 using a Modified Blast Hole Open Stoping method for the mining of Blocks 1,2 and 3. Block 4 is currently being mined as a Block Cave. The process of identifying and optimizing a mining method to mine the Block 5 ore body started in 1991 and in 2006 Inclined Caving was identified as being a technically feasible method. This report aims to document the process employed in developing this method by the Block 5 Pre-Feasibility Team as well as discussing the technical challenges encountered during this process.

The metallurgical balance is a tool usually applied in the mining industry. The final result is used for different objectives. All the existing software for the calculation of the metallurgical balance fits the numbers in such way that a logical correspondence between the input and output materials exist. Nevertheless, the accuracy of the metallurgical balance strongly depends on the quality of the input data. Division El Teniente of Codelco Chile has been optimizing the metallurgical balance system the last 14 years. As well, it has participated in the development of corporate norms to optimize the operations of sampling and weighting systems. As a consequence, the precision and the accuracy of the metallurgical balance have been improved in a significant way. Also the understanding of process variability was enhanced. The improvements have allowed Codelco to discover and minimize hidden losses and to better support top management decisions. The present paper describes the main aspect of the continuous improvement process.

Several longwall faces in India have collapsed due to adverse geological conditions and/or inadequate capacity of powered supports. Thus it is imperative to access the capacity of a powered support and its interaction at longwall faces of varying geomining conditions in advance with lots of confidence. To achieve this, an index has been developed to ascertain the front leg pressure (FLP) of chock-shield support and roof-to-floor convergence (RFC) at longwall faces. The index called ?Longwall Face Stability Index? (LFSI) has been developed using statistics and Finite Element Modelling (FEM). The front leg pressure (FLP) and roof-to-floor convergence (RFC) predicted from the LFSI are validated with the field monitored data from two longwall panels. In this study, an attempt is also made to incorporate various geomining conditions into the finite element models typical of longwall mining practice. The index has taken into account the wide variations of geomining parameters like thickness, young?s modulus and friction angle of main roof (small, large), coal type (soft, hard), powered support capacity, and depth of coal seam. Thus, LFSI can be thought of as an index representing combined effect of roof type, geomining conditions and powered support capacity.

"The chromium (Cr) content of stainless steel originates from recycled scrap and/or ferrochrome (FeCr), which is produced mainly by the carbothermic reduction of chromite ore. The oxidative sintered pellet production process is one of the most widely applied FeCr processes. The supplier of this technology specifies that recycling of chromite-containing dust collected from the pellet sintering off-gas and fines screened out from the sintered pellets (collectively referred to as pre-oxidized chromite fines) should be limited to a maximum of 4 wt% of the total pellet composition. However, the results presented in this paper suggest that recycling of such fines up to a limit of 32 wt% of the total pellet composition may improve the compressive and abrasion strengths of the cured pellet. In addition, electron microprobe and quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses demonstrate that chromite grains present in the pre-oxidized chromite fines consist, at least partially, of crystalline phases/compounds that will improve the metallurgical efficiency and specific electricity consumption (i.e. MWh/ton FeCr produced) of the smelting process. Introduction Stainless steel is a vital modern-day alloy that is well-known for its corrosion resistance, which is mainly due to the inclusion of chromium (Cr) (ICDA, 2013). Stainless steel is mostly produced from recycled scrap and ferrochrome (FeCr), a relatively crude alloy of Cr and iron (Fe). FeCr is predominantly produced by the carbothermic reduction of chromite, a mineral belonging to the spinel group characterized by the unit formula [(Mg,Fe2+)(Al,Cr,Fe3+)2O4] (Haggerty, 1991; Paktunc and Cabri, 1995; Tathavakar, Antony, and Jha, 2005). Although Cr can occur in 82 different minerals, chromite is the only source of new Cr units that can be exploited in commercial volumes (Motzer and Engineers, 2004). Approximately 95% of mined chromite is used in the production of various FeCr grades, of which high-carbon and charge grade FeCr are the most common (ICDA, 2013)."

The aims of this study were to investigate the factors that influence women’s engagement in technical positions in the South African mining sector and to determine what could be done to promote their successful participation. A convergent parallel mixed-methods research design was used to ascertain the factors that facilitate, inhibit, and influence engagement. In the quantitative phase of the study, questionnaires were circulated to women employeees; and in the qualitative phase, semistructured interviews were conducted with employer representatives, most of whom were human resource personnel. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the three-factor structure (vigour, dedication, and absorption) of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale fit the sample data reasonably well. Although there is room for improvement, respondents demonstrated acceptable levels of engagement in their work. On the other hand, the qualitative findings showed that employee engagement is impacted by unfavourable working conditions, work–life balance, and the mining industry’s male-dominated work culture. The findings showed that employee engagement should be elevated to a core human resource function. To increase the participation of women in mining, human resource professionals are encouraged to collaborate with mine supervisors, managers, and employees to develop programmes that promote employees’ absorption in and dedication to their work.

The semi-autogenous grinding mill is the bottleneck whenever treating hard and finely fragmented ore at Benguet Corporation's Kaline Concentrator. Low milling rates result from very high and fluctuating mill power draw. Attempts to use a mill horsepower control loop to regulate feed rate were unsuccessful because of operational upsets caused by fluctuations in feed rate on downstream operations. The objective of the computer control was to maximize tonnage throughput by stabilizing the power draw at a high but safe level without upsetting subsequent operations. The semi-autogenous mill is operated in closed circuit with a stationary screen. Instrumentation consists of a feed weightometer, a power transmitter to measure mill load, a headwater flowmeter and an ultrasonic level sensor to measure the mill discharge sump level. A 64 k-byte FOX-3 Foxboro computer processes field data from various sensors and manipulates the input control variables. These variables are the fresh feed rate and the headwater flowrate. Feed rate is controlled through a supervisor-type computer program aimed at maximizing and stabilizing power draw. The control scheme was according to how the operators responded during an operator-directed automatic control mode. Mill dilution is similarly controlled. Results achieved reflect a 3% increase in tonnage milled because of the reduction in control variability that ensued.

On 8th August, 1973, 57 members of the Institute visited Prieska Copper Mine at Copperton in the North Western Cape. After tea, the group was welcomed by the Management of the Mine, and Mr Grobler, the General Manager, gave an introductory talk. After they had been taken on a bus tour of the property, the members split up into groups and proceeded underground or to the concentrator. Of special interest to the mining members were the rock-handling methods in use at the mine. The stoping method that has been adopted is the continuous, long-hole sub-level open stoping system. The broken ore is moved with rubbertyred front-end loaders from the stope drawpoints to the ore passes. On the main tramming levels, the ore is collected by electric locomotives and discharged into the main shaft system at the bottom. At the shaft ore-pass system, a gyratory crusher that can accept rocks up to 1 m in diameter has been installed. The crushed product (minus 150 mm in diameter) will then be hoisted by a Koepe winder, which has a rated capacity of 900 tons per hour. The mine is also served by a declined roadway from surface, which facilitates the movement of heavy equipment. The most striking aspect is the productivity that can be achieved by the use of a trackless-mining system. For the production of 230 000 tons per month, it is estimated that 6 stopers and 7 developers will be required. The total labour force will be approximately 2500-2000 Bantu, 200 Coloured, and 300 Europeans. Training of maintenance and operating personnel is of the utmost importance, and it was interesting to note the extent to which non-White labour is being used in these occupations. Lunch was served at the single quarters, after which the group proceeded to the airfield for the return trip to Johannesburg. On behalf of the visitors, Professor de V. Numerous developments and improvements have been made to tap-hole designs. On the other hand, there are very specific designs in operation that have endured for many years without any modification. Nobody likes design changes because of risk - the risk of atypical wear, potential hazards, and costly repairs entailing enormous production losses. So the philosophy ‘never touch a running system’ is maintained, because among other things there is no efficient working monitoring technology for tap-holes. In the past few years a couple of new technical solutions have been investigated and developed. Not all theoretical solutions are possible in practice. However, metallurgists are inventive, and the last word regarding efficient working tap-hole monitoring technologies has not yet been spoken.

The South African mining industry continues to be a major source of employment at a time when at least 25 per cent of the working age population is unemployed. At the same time the industry faces a skills shortage in many of the disciplines necessary for its future health. The University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg, and University of South Africa have historically produced mining graduates for the South African industry, with any shortfall being met by the recruitment of overseas graduates. More recently the global shortage of engineers and other mining industry professionals has seen a reversal of this trend and a very significant emigration of well-educated and highly skilled personnel. The traditional career path for mining graduates is in production and mine management. However, there is the parallel and possibly more pressing need for specialized skills in such fields as ventilation, rock engineering, mine planning, mineral resource evaluation, and mineral asset valuation. It is in these essential areas that chronic shortages continue to hamper the development of the industry and may well frustrate its ambitions to be safe, healthy, and profitable into the future. The permeability of skills across sectorial boundaries within the mining industry requires that skills shortages in the platinum sector are not looked at in isolation, but within the context of the entire industry. This paper reviews the efforts being made by the universities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels to meet the needs of the South African mining industry, in terms of the required numbers and the range of specialized skills.

"Falls of ground pose costly hazards to personnel and equipment and thus measures should be taken to prevent them. This study endeavours to improve the support systems used in geotechnically poor ground at a Zimbabwean platinum mine by analysing the status quo and recommending an effective support system. Various techniques were used to determine the quality of ground conditions, predict the rock mass behaviour, and to identify the appropriate rockbolt type. An analysis of the current ground control methods and their limitations was also undertaken.The results showed that the current support system and mining practices in poor ground need to be modified to improve safety and productivity. Stoping overbreak is influenced by poor ground conditions and the explosives currently used. The use of emulsion is recommended to replace ANFO. Redesigning of pillars is also recommended in poor ground conditions. An evaluation of the current roofbolt system indicated an opportunity for improvement. With new insight on the performance of the shorter length roofbolts currently in use, a new support system was recommended taking into consideration cost-benefit analysis. Barring down using pinch bars in poor ground was seen as a risky and time-consuming exercise, hence the use of mechanical scalers is recommended to achieve zero harm and to meet production targets. Smoothwall blasting is recommended in poor ground to minimize excavation damage. Other recommendations include the use of hydrological surveys to determine groundwater levels and implement corrective measures. Both empirical and numerical modelling approaches need to be utilized in determining the optimum support. IntroductionThe presence of geological discontinuities such as faults and joints weakens the rock mass. Adequate support is critical in achieving zero harm in underground mines. This paper reviews the current support systems used in poor ground conditions at a Zimbabwean platinum mine. The area of research is located on the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe. The mine exploits platinum group elements (PGEs) and base metals. It is shallow, having a maximum depth of less than 300 m. The Great Dyke is the second largest reserve of PGEs, following the South African Bushveld Complex (Oberthur et al., 2012). It is a linear layered intrusion that extends for about 550 km with a maximum width of 11 km (Prendergast, 1989). The generalized section of the Great Dyke is almost like a trumpet, comprising layers that dip towards the centre. The reef exploited at the mine, the Mineralised Sulphide Zone (MSZ), is located in the pyroxenite layer, which is hosted in the ultramafic sequence. The MSZ is a uniform layer about 2– 3.5 m thick, dipping at around 10–14° from surface outcrop towards the axis of the basin, and located between bronzite and websterite horizons. The visible disseminated sulphide mineralization shows a typical and consistent vertical distribution of platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal values. The research was undertaken to review the current support systems used in geotechnically poor ground conditions in a bid to improve both safety and productivity."

In this paper, four cyanide-utilising bacteria strains were isolated from a gold mine tailings pond, in the Hexi gold mine (Shandong), China. Based on the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence, four strains were identified as Aeromonas hydrophila strain C1, Bacillus mojavensis strain C3, Shewanella oneidensis strain C2, and Aeromonas media strain C4. Based on the cyanide detoxification efficiencies results of the four strains, Bacillus mojavensis C3 had the highest detoxification rate and was selected to assess its efficiency to detoxify cyanide in gold mine tailings at different pH (9.5, 10.5, and 11.6) using cyanide as the sole carbon and nitrogen sources. Strain C3 was capable of detoxifying 46.5mg/L of cyanide-containing gold mine tailings at all tested pH ranges at 30oC, 196 rpm after 15 d. The amounts of cyanide detoxified were 87.5%, 84.1%, and 73.5% at initial pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. The highest cyanide detoxification was observed at pH 9.5. The viable cells growths in the samples were 5.7E+09CFU/mL, 4.9E+09CFU/mL, and 2.7E+09CFU/mL at pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. Free ammonia concentrations were observed as a byproduct of the biodetoxification process. The residual ammonia concentration in the sample was observed at 0.35 mg/L, 0.33 mg/L, and 0.62 mg/L at pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. The highest residual ammonia concentration was noticed at pH 11.6. The amount of cyanide removed by mixed culture strains C3 and C4 was 94.6% and showed a residual free ammonia concentration of 2.6mg/L, as biodetoxification byproduct after 120 h. The pure culture Bacillus mojavensis strain C3 and its mixed culture strains exhibited higher potential to detoxify cyanide-containing gold mine tailings at alkaline pH values and could be cultivated to detoxify gold mine effluents at large-scale. In this paper we develop a physics-based model for lining erosion in steel ladles. The model predicts the temperature evolution in the liquid slag, steel, refractory bricks, and outer steel shell of the ladle. The flow of slag and steel is due to forced convection induced by inert gas injection, vacuum treatment (extreme bubble expansion), natural convection, and waves caused by the gas stirring. The lining erosion takes place by dissolution of refractory elements into the steel or slag. The mass and heat transfer coefficients inside the ladle during gas stirring are modelled based on wall functions which take the distribution of wall shear velocities as a critical input. The wall shear velocities are obtained from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for a sample of scenarios, spanning out the operational space, and a model is developed using curve fitting. The model is capable of reproducing both thermal and erosion evolution well. Deviations between model predictions and industrial data are discussed. The model is fast and has been tested successfully in a ‘semi-online’ application. The model source code is available to the public at [https://github.com/SINTEF/refractorywear].

High pressure grinding technology has gained further interest in various industries. So far in the mining industry, machines are in operation in diamond mines and iron ore applications. In gold and copper ore processing, test work has been conducted showing considerable operational and process benefits. Similar benefits can be expected from HPGR applications in the platinum industry due to the preferred ore breakage along grain boundaries, thus liberating the PGE particles. This paper will provide an update on the state of high pressure grinding roll technology. Developments in the design of high pressure grinding rolls, for minimized maintenance requirements and availability just as high as conventional mills, will be presented. Plant flow sheets and concepts will be discussed, which allow for a reduction of capital and operating cost in comparison to existing two-stage milling circuits.

Fluid-bed technology is a key pyrometallurgical step for processing a vast number of ores and concentrates. Over the past 50 years, considerable research and development efforts have been made by Metso Outotec to expand the application window of this technology. This paper illustrates different processing routes where fluid-bed technology plays an important role in the production of the copper. The fluid-bed processes utilized are partial, sulfate-producing, and dead roasting. The focus of this paper considers the advantages of the dead-roasting process. This “zero waste” process can provide copper oxides, steam, electrical power, and sulfuric acid for new and existing solvent extraction–electrowinning plants. In a case where an operation is running out of oxidic ores and concentrates, fluid-bed roasting can be applied to close this gap and provide the required copper oxides in a sustainable way.
