After 1990, a great process of re-organisation and economic reform has occurred in the Romanian mining sector and especially in the pitcoal mining in the Jiu Valley. This process has included both legislation and the main aspects for getting an economic efficiency in the environment issues and for dealing the problems with social impact. Accordingly, starting with the year 1993 a new mining method has been introduced to turn efficient the pitcoal mining, and we speak about mining with caved in bed. This method has two variants: - with transverse strips and caved in bed; - with long face and caved in bed. Each of the above-mentioned variants has in turn several subdivisions, depending on how the longwall is prepared and on other characteristics. By using this method, the output has increased compared to other mining methods. The main safety aspects concerning caved in mining refer to: - great emissions of methane; - technical aspects (a mining method system, supports, discharging process); - pressure driving (analysed for the case of mining with long face, with transverse strips as well for the case of transverse strips when mining a subsequent sublevel).

Many large caverns are being constructed in great depths in Korea mainly for the storage of oil and LPG. These caverns are mostly located near the port where rock conditions are reasonably good. In some instances, the horizontal stress is very high and endangers the stability of the cavern. The purpose of this study is to assess the stability of large caverns excavated in a rock mass with high horizontal stress where Ko value is close to 3. Result shows that stress exerted in the shotcrete at crown exceeds allowable value when the 3rd bench is excavated. Also found is the tensile failure of shotcrete near the boundaries between benches. In Korea werden viele grosse Kaverne fuer Aufbewahrung vom Oel und Fluessiggas in grosser Tiefe gebaut. Am Meisten befinden sich diese Kaverne in der Naehe von Haefen, wo der Fels gute Verhaeltnisse zum Bauen einer Kaverne besitzt. In einigen Faellen ist die Horizontalspannung sehr gross und dadurch wird die Stabilitaet vom Kaverne gefaerdet. Der Zweck dieser Arbeit ist die Stabilitaet des im Fels gebauten grossen Kavernes mit hoher Horiaontalspannung zu schuetzen, wo Ko-Wert sich auf 3 naehrt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Spannung im Spritzbeton an der Krone den zulaessigen Wert ueberschreitet, wenn das dritte Bank ausgegraben wird. Im Bereich des Spritzbetons zwischen Baenke wurde das Zugversagen festgestellt. Des larges cavités nombreuses sont en train d’être construites en grand profondeur en Corée prin-cipalement pour le stocage du pétrole et LPG. Ces cavités sont pour la plupart situées près de la porte oú les conditions des roches sont résonablement bons. En quelques cas, la contrainte hori-zontale est trés haute et met en danger la stabilité de la cavité. L’objet de cet étude est d’estimer la stabilité des large cavités excavées dans une masse de roche ayant une haute contrainte horizontale oú la valeur de Ko est proche à 3. Le résultat montre que la contrainte exercée dans le shotcrete à la couronne dépasse la valeur admissible quand le troisième banc est excavé. En plus une faillite en tension du shotcrete près de la frontière entre des bancs est trouvée.

High density slurry and paste tailings systems offer significant environmental benefits primarily related to reduced water consumption. However, these potential advantages need to be evaluated on a project-by-project basis. The successful design of a thickened or paste tailings system requires that the system is designed to accommodate the effect of the high density slurry on pumps, pipelines and the overall system operation. The transport system must be designed as an integrated unit and the interaction of all the components need to be considered. The transport system includes the slurry preparation plant, the pump station and the pipeline. This paper assesses the impact of increasing the slurry density in a platinum tailings system from conventional densities to thickened and paste tailings densities. As slurry density and rheology increase, there is a sharp increase in energy consumption for the additional water savings and this additional cost needs to be considered. A case study shows that there is a considerable benefit in increasing densities to the point at which tailings can be still be deposited in the standard manner. For existing systems, increasing density can result in an increased capacity at a marginal power cost, provided that the slurry is not too viscous. For a new system, a smaller pump and pipeline can result in lower capital costs and a marginally higher energy cost, if the optimum density is selected. Keywords: tailings, paste, pumping, slurry

Metal mining operations, in particular gold mining operations, use intensive ore control procedures in order to manage the extraction of ore zones from benches containing both ore and waste material. Typical grade control procedures rely on blast hole samples to indicate ore grade. Statistical techniques and geological controls are then used to create two-dimensional polygons, which indicate zones of material designated as ore. These ore-polygons are calculated using pre-blast material locations and are generally not corrected for rock movement caused by blasting. This lack of correction appears to exacerbate the material mischaracterization problem of sending ore to the waste dump and/or waste to the mill. One Nevada gold mining company has estimated that this could be a $10 million per year problem for their operations. Using a simplified vector field algorithm, a method of taking point movement data and interpolating post-blast positions for all nodes in a polygon has been developed. Currently working in 2-dimentions (X-Y), this algorithm utilizes the movement vectors calculated from pre-and post-blast positions of targets placed in a blast, to generate a spatial transformation function for any point on the bench. This transformation is then applied to the nodes of the ore-polygons to produce modified dig lines ore polygons reflecting distortion and movement resulting from the blast. The method as implemented uses common mine planning routines and is performed using the Surpac software suite. The method may be adapted to use any pre-and post-blast point movement data available, and most mine planning suites include the simple interpolation algorithms used. The present paper provides a brief overview of the thermodynamics of titania rich slags, an outline of the Multi-Phase Equilibrium (MPE) package and its application to ilmenite smelting. Through assessment of published experimental data on various systems containing TiOx, it was found that despite considerable scatter in measured phase equilibria data for the binary Ti2O3-TiO2system,the behaviour of binary and higher order titania rich slags and oxide solid solutions phases could be represented by solution models in the MPE package. Results from the applications of the MPE model on the stability of solid phases and slag-refractory interactions will be presented and discussed. Parallels will be drawn between the predictions by the model and observations made during pilot plant tests. The high-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) seismic reflection data acquired for Impala Platinum between 1998 and 2002 in the western Bushveld Igneous Complex form an integral part of Impala?s mine planning and development programme. These data are of sufficiently high quality to provide unprecedented 3-D models of the geological structure of the Merensky Reef and UG2Chromitite Reef, from which the mine deduces the size, geometry and distribution of mineable blocks. Conversely, the seismic data details zones of un-mineable ground caused by structural disturbances in the form of potholes, fault zones and pegmatoid intrusions. Furthermore, variations in dip and strike are well imaged, allowing the mine planners to optimize the mine design and layout. Current interpretation work is focused on enhancing the accuracy of these geological model seven further through the analysis of ?seismic trace attributes.? Preliminary testing on the Impala Platinum 3-D seismic volume has shown that attribute analysis has the potential to illuminate a number of geological reef disturbances that are otherwise ?invisible? in the original seismic time volume. Potential areas of improvement include inter alia: ?Improved definition of major fault zones ?Improved definition of zones of reef depression (?slumping?) ?Identification of reef terracing and/or reverse dip.. The effect of flotation operational parameters on froth stability and froth recovery was studied. Froth stability was measured using a special column. To determine the froth recovery, the froth height change model and froth height exponential model were used. It was found that since the interactions between the pulp and froth zones affect the time of froth formation, the exponential model is more suitable than the froth height change method for determining the froth recovery. The results showed that superficial air velocity and collector dosage have, respectively, the highest and lowest effect on the froth recovery, while froth recovery decreases sharply with increasing froth height.

A computer program was developed to simulate transient strains and stresses during an overcoring in the situ stress measurement. The solution is based on superpositioning of elastic stresses. The measured strains can be compared with the calculated ones to check if the measured transient behaviour is accordant with the interpreted in situ state of stress. If not, the in situ state of stress can be calculated based on any transient or final strain values. The transient stresses can be compared with the strength envelope of intact rock and thereby estimate the core damage potential. Technically, the developed code fulfilled all the objectives, and the numerical error was found to be less than 5%. The basic idea can be applied also for different overcoring probes with minor modifications and recalculation of stress tensors. The analysed case studies showed clearly the advance of having an objective and practical quality control method to study the reliability of the in situ stress measurement data. The study was set up and funded by the nuclear waste management companies Posiva Oy ( Finland ) and Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB ( Sweden ). Un programme informatique a été développé pour simuler des tensions et des contraintes passagères pendant la mesure in situ de contrainte de surcarottage. La solution se fonde sur une superposition de contraintes élastiques. Les contraintes mesurées peuvent être comparées avec celles calculées pour vérifier si le comportement passager mesuré correspond à l'état de contrainte in situ interprété. Sinon, l'état de contrainte in situ peut être calculé à partir de n'importe quelle valeur de contrainte passagère ou finale. Les contraintes passagères peuvent être comparées avec l'enveloppe de force de roche intacte et ainsi il est possible d'évaluer le potentiel de dégâts au noyau. Techniquement le code développé a rempli tous les objectifs, et le taux d'erreur s'est révélé être inférieur à 5 %. L'idée de base peut être appliquée aussi pour différentes expériences de surcarottage avec des modifications mineures et le recalcul de tenseurs de contrainte. Les études de cas analysées ont montré clairement l'avantage d'avoir une méthode de contrôle de qualité objective et pratique pour étudier la fiabilité de données de mesure de contrainte in situ. L'étude a été fondée et financée par les sociétés de gestion de déchets nucléaires Posiva Oy (Finlande) et Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB (Suède). Es wurde ein Computerprogramm entwickelt, um Transient-Beanspruchungen und Spannungen während eines Überentkernens in situ-Spannung-Messung zu simulieren. Die Lösung beruht auf Superpositionierung von elastischen Spannungen. Die gemessenen Beanspruchungen können mit den berechneten Daten verglichen werden, um nachzuprüfen, ob das abgemessene Transient-Verhalten mit dem interpretierten in situ-Zustand der Spannung übereinstimmt. Wenn nicht, kann der situ-Zustand der Spannung auf irgendwelchen Transient- oder endgültigen Beanspruchungswerten berechnet werden. Die Transiet-Spannungen können mit dem Stärke-Umschlag des intakten Felsens verglichen werden und dadurch ein Kernbeschädigungspotential kalkulieren. Technisch erkannte der entwickelte Code alle Ziele und hat gefunden, dass die numerische Fehler weniger als 5 % waren. Grundsätzlich können auch verschiedene Überentkernen-Untersuchungen mit kleineren Modifizierungen und Wiederberechnung des Spannung-Tensors angewandt werden. Die analysierten Fallstudien zeigten deutlich den Fortschritt, objektive und praktische Qualitätskontrollmethode zu haben, die Zuverlässigkeit in Situ-Spannung-Messung-Daten zu studieren. Die Studie wurde aufgestellt und durch Atommüll-Management-Firmen Posiva Oy (Finnland) und Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB (Schweden) finanziert.

Solvent extraction of Cu from acidic leach, using an oxime extractant, e.g. LIX 984 or Acorga is a well known and established process. As the process advances, Cu is extracted to the solvent and is replaced by H+ in the aqueous phase. At high acidity the distribution coefficient of Cu between the solvent and the aqueous phase decreases, and eventually relatively high concentration of Cu remains in the raffinate, regardless of the number of equilibrium stages. In many processes this phenomenon is immaterial, as the raffinate returns to the leaching and no copper is lost. But when the copper raffinate is used for processing of additional metals, minimal concentration of Cu in the raffinate is essential for an effective process. The recommended process includes three steps: 1. SX-1: Standard extraction of Cu with oxime. The resulting raffinate contains about 6-8 g/L Cu and 50 g/L H2SO4. 2. SX-N: Extraction of most of the acid into an amine-based solvent, and stripping it with a base, e.g. aqueous ammonia, caustic, Na2CO3 etc. The extraction removes no metals, but decreases the concentration of acid from 50 to 10 g/L. 3. SX-2: Extraction of the neutralized solution once more with oxime, to remove the residual copper. Such a process enables one to get down to 100-150 ppm Cu in the final raffinate. This process was developed and tested in the R&D facility in Chambishi Metals plc, by a joint team of Chambishi & Bateman, using Cognis LIX 984N and real solutions from the plant. In the laboratory scale, the equilibrium isotherms for SX-1, SX-2 and the neutralization were developed. Computer simulation of the results showed that the optimal configuration is two stages for both extraction and stripping for SX-1. For SX-2 2-3 stages of extraction and two stages of stripping are needed. The stripping stages may be common to both SX-1 and SX-2. The neutralization of SX1 raffinate was tested both by conventional precipitation with lime and by extraction with Alamine based solvent extraction and stripping with a solution of 10% NaOH. For the SX-N only one stage was needed for both the extraction and stripping. The bench scale pilot plant was run for both SX-1 & SX-2. The results were very similar to the simulated ones, and the configuration of 2E2S for SX-1 and 3E=2S for SX-2 delivered the required raffinate with less than 150 ppm Cu.

The REP experiment is part of the research programme conducted by Andra to investigate the possibility of reversible radwaste disposal in a Jurassic (Callovo-Oxfordian) argillite formation at the Meuse/Haute-Marne underground laboratory site in northeastern France. The experiment focuses on the hydromechanical response of the formation to sinking the laboratory access shaft. Modelling of boreholes and shaft sinking operations has helped to optimise measurement point locations based on initial stress tensor anisotropy, while minimising interaction between instrument boreholes. Analyses were made of model sensitivity to intrinsic rock characteristics, hydromechanical coupling properties and sensor installation procedures. L’expérimentation REP fait partie du programme de recherche pluridisciplinaire engagé par l’Andra pour étudier la possibilité d’un stockage réversible des déchets radioactifs dans la formation Callovo-Oxfordienne des argilites du site de Meuse/Haute-Marne (Commune de Bure - France). Cette expérimentation permettra d’étudier la REponse hydromécanique de la formation aux sollicitations engendrées par le fonçage du Puits d’accès du laboratoire souterrain de recherche. Afin d’optimiser le positionnement des points de mesures, compte tenu de l’anisotropie du tenseur des contraintes initiales, et de minimiser les interactions entre les forages d’instrumentation, des modélisations des forages et du creusement du puits ont été conduites. Des analyses de sensibilité aux caractéristiques intrinsèques de la roche, aux propriétés de couplage HM et aux protocoles d’installation des capteurs ont été faites. Die REP-Untersuchung ist Teil des multidisziplinären Forschungsprogramms, das die ANDRA im Callovo-Oxfordian-Tonstein in situ am Standort Meuse/Haute Marne (Gemeinde Bure – Frankreich) im Hinblick auf eine Eignung zur reversiblen Lagerung radioaktiver Abfälle durchführt. Dabei soll das hydro-mechanische Verhalten der Formation auf die Beanspruchungen, die durch das Abteufen des Zugangsschachts zum Untertage-Forschungslabor erzeugt werden, untersucht werden. Zur optimalen Positionierung der Messpunkte unter Berücksichtigung der Anisotropie des Tensors der Ausgangsspannungen und zur Minimierung der gegenseitigen Beeinflussung der Instrumentierbohrungen wurden ein Schachtabteuf- und Bohrmodelle entwickelt. Zur Untersuchung der inhärenten Eigenschaften des Gesteins, des gekoppelten HM-Verhaltens und der Installationsprotokolle der Messsonden wurden Sensibilitätsanalysen durchgeführt.

In an underground mine the ingress of heat can generally be attributed to two sources (Rock exposure and artificial mechanisms). The heat load relating rock exposure is subdivided into stoping [~40%] and haulages [~20%]. Rock is exposed to the ambient air and as a mine increases in depth the VRT (Virgin Rock Temperature) increases which leads to more heat ingress underground. To counter the heat ingress, especially in low-seam stoping areas of a deep level mine, air is, a) cooled artificially, b) the amount of rock exposed is reduced in the back areas of a stope by backfill applications, and c) ventilation air is used more efficiently. The heat reduction within a stope due to placed backfill could amount to ~50% for operations mining at a mean rock breaking depth of about 4500 mbc (metres below collar). Unfortunately, due to backfill transport methods, the physical fluid properties and application methods adopted, additional heat is induced into the air. The heat ingress due to backfill application could amount to as much as 25% of the overall in-stope heat load. This heat influx, seen as a negative aspect of backfill operations, is nevertheless overshadowed by the overall in-mine heat load reduction capability of about 20% attainable. The in-stope benefit [~50%] attainable from backfill operations could be increased with the incorporation of a heat exchange (cooling) methodology to offset the additional heat ingress into the surrounding air of a deep underground mine.

ABSTRACT: The paper describes the characterisation studies of Tectonised Clay Shales at laboratory and in situ scale. The interest relates to tunnelling under squeezing and swelling conditions, in Italy, along the Apennines. The results of monitoring during full face excavation are presented in conjunction with numerical modelling. RESUME: Cet article présente la caractérisation, à l'échelle du laboratoire et in situ, des Argiles Chaotiques. L'attention est portée sur le creusement, dans ces milieux gonflants, des tunnels, dans les zones montagneuses des Appennini, en Italie. Enfin, on présentera les résultats de la modélisation numérique et la comparaison de ces derniers avec les mesures effectuées in situ. KURZFASSUNG: Die Arbeit beschreibt die Charakterisierungsstudien von tektonisierten Schiefertonen, sowohl im Labor als auch vor Ort. Das Interesse gilt dem Tunnelbau unter Quetsch- und Schwellbedingungen in Italien entlang der Apenninen. Die Überwachungsergebnisse des ganzflächigen Ausbruchs werden mit numerischen Modellen präsentiert.

Empirical equations established for estimating the rock strength of the working face based on the cutting forces of a tunnel boring machines (TBM) are further examined and discussed with respect to the dominant factors affecting TBM performance. Constants in the equations are related to TBM-specific parameters such as excavation (tunnel) diameter, cutter diameter, and cutter distance. The relationship between the constants and the TBM specifications is examined in this study on the basis of data collected at ten tunnels, and it is found that the constants are most strongly influenced by the cutter diameter and tunnel diameter. Zur Schätzung der Gesteinsfestigkeit an der Arbeitsfläche ermittelte empirische Gleichungen, die auf den Schneidekräften von Tunnelbohrmaschinen (TBM) beruhen, wurden weiter im Hinblick auf die vorherrschenden, die Leistung der TBM beeinflussenden Faktoren hin untersucht und diskutiert. In der Gleichung enthaltene Konstanten werden zu den TBM-spezifischen Parametern wie Auschachtungs- (Tunnel) Durchmesser, Schneidendurchmesser und Schachtlänge in Beziehung gesetzt. Die Beziehung zwischen diesen Konstanten und den technischen Daten der TBM wird in dieser Studie auf der Basis der bei 10 Tunnelbauten gesammelten Daten untersucht. Dabei wurde gefunden, dass diese Konstanten am stärksten von den Durchmessern der Schneiden und der Tunnel beeinflusst werden. Cette étude examine et discute les équations empiriques permettant d'estimer la résistance de la roche attaquée aux forces de coupe des tunneliers dans le cadre de l'étude des facteurs dominants affectant les performances des tunneliers. Les constantes de ces équations concernent les paramètres spécifiques des tunneliers comme le diamètre d'excavation (du tunnel), le diamètre du couteau et la distance de coupe. Cette étude examine le rapport entre ces constantes et les caractéristiques techniques des tunneliers d'après des données collectées dans dix tunnels et elle conclut que ces constantes sont principalement influencées par le diamètre du couteau et le diamètre du tunnel.

Abstract: The aim of the research presented is to study the effect of complex loading schemes on the fracturing process during loading and/or unloading. A first set of experiments was done using a poly-axial cell. These experiments in combination with numerical simulations showed a difference in micro-fracturing (shear and tensile cracks), but not in macro-failure between various loading/ unloading schemes. The second set of experiments was based on the three-point bending test and several cycles with or without rotation between cycles were applied. If the specimen was rotated by 90° or 180° about its long axis between the first and second cycle, no Kaiser effect was observed. Résumé: Le but de la recherche présentée est d’étudier l’effet de schémas de charge complexe sur le processus de fracturation durant la phase de charge et de décharge. Une première série d’expériences était réalisée utilisant une cellule polyaxiale. Ces expériences combinées avec des simulations numériques ont montré une différence de micro-fracturation (fissures de cisaillements et de traction) pour les différents schémas de charge et décharge, mais en ce qui concerne la macro-fracturation ce n’est pas le cas. La deuxième série d’expériences était basée sur des essais de flexion trois points avec plusieurs cycles, avec ou sans rotation entre les cycles. Si l’échantillon est tourné de 90° ou 180° selon le grand axe entre le premier et le second cycle, l’effet Kaiser n’est pas observé. Zusammenfassung: Der Zweck der vorliegenden Forschung bestand darin, den Einfluß von komplizierten Beanspruchungsschemen auf den Bruchprozess im Laufe von Belastung und/oder Entlastung von Gesteinen zu untersuchen. Der erste hier beschriebene Satz von Experimenten wurde mit einer dreiaxialen Belastungsmaschine angestellt. Diese Experimenten zusammen mit dazugehörigen numerischen Simulationen zeigten Unterschiede zwischen Be- und Entlastungsbeanspruchungen in Bezug auf mikrobruchmechanische Mechanismen (d.h. Scher- oder Zugrisse) an, aber nicht in Bezug auf den Makrobruchprozess. Der zweite Satz von Experimenten umfasste Gesteinsbeanspruchung in mehreren Zyklen von Drei-Punkt-Biegung, indem die Gesteinsproben zwischen den Zyklen um einen angegebenen Winkel (0°, 90° oder 180°) gedreht wurden. Falls die Probe um 90° oder 180° gedreht wurde, wurde kein Kaiser-Effekt im zweiten Zyklus beobachtet.

Arising from the sea floor in a span of 55 million years, the enchanting Himalayas had remained one of the most potent factors influencing the Asian region. The challenges of the mighty Himalayas notwithstanding, it continues to provide opportunities for the humankind in optimum usage of the natural resources and sustainable development. Optimal management of natural resources in mountain areas through decision support tools offered by remote sensing will go a long way in realization of the Ganesh Himal Zinc-Lead Project. The authors have a real life endeavor spanning over 37 years in developing a mining industry in a mountainous region of Nepal and an attempt to integrate with the development of other natural attributes of the region. With rapid acceleration of science and technology, humankind has acquired power to transform his environment countless ways and on an unprecedented scale. While mineral resources are the pillars on which we have built industry and infrastructure, industrial countries in the North have been in the forefront of technological advancements, the developed countries of the South have been at the receiving end of exploitation of mineral resources worldwide. A relationship with natural environment, re-crafted by the civilizing impulse, to meet human demands are upcoming challenges for management of natural resource in sustainable manner for a livable world.

Matthews matriculated at Roosevelt High School and joined the No. 1 Parachute Battalion in 1968. He worked in Zimbabwe for 31 years in geological prospecting, civil engineering, and open-pit mining.

The stability of slopes is a crucial problem not only in open pit mines, but also in civil engineering situations. The deformational behaviour of slopes is in general monitored during/after the excavation by carrying out field measurements where displacement measurements are commonly adopted. In monitoring the slope stability it should be emphasized that the measurement results must be properly interpreted so as to assess whether the slopes are stable or become unstable in the future. In order to interpret the data, back analysis is extremely useful. In this paper a slope stability monitoring system is described. It consists of displacement measurements by GPS, and a back analysis of measured data. The use of GPS has a great advantage, because of the fact that continuous displacement measurements with high accuracy for a large extent of concerned area can be easily achieved. On the other hand, the back analysis can reveal the mechanical characteristics of the ground, which make it possible to assess the stability of slopes quantitatively.

The Konkola Mine, a subsidiary of the Konkola Copper Mines Plc (KCM) which is owned by the Vedanta group of companies of India and Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Holding limited, is located at Chililabombwe in the northern extension of Zambia's Copperbelt province. In its operations, the mine has been experiencing problems in ascertaining the optimum degree of fineness and the operating density of the hydrocyclone overflow in order to achieve high flotation performance. It was believed that recovery of sulphide copper minerals from Konkola ore is a function of the fineness of the grind so that it might be an economical justification to modify the grinding plant in order to run at lower cyclone overflow densities than the case is now. In an effort to improve these operations, it was decided to carry out test work on various hydrocyclones of sizes 0.381 m, 0.4575 m and on 0.508 m. The later was found to give satisfactory results and was installed on the plant. Despite giving satisfactory results there was need to investigate further to establish the working densities and size. Increasing the density of cyclone overflow decreases the per cent passing 75 pm at least in the range 1080-1 150 g/l. Furthermore, hydrocyclones give better separation at low densities of feed and hence the efficiency is high at low feed densities. Circulating load increases with an increase in feed densities and an decrease in the grind. The flotation performance in both sulphide and oxide copper minerals rougher stages is enhanced with an increase in the degree of fineness of the grind, with an optimum being obtained at a density of 1 150 g/l and 81.4% passing 75 µm. The visit which took place on the 18th February, 1972 was a departure in that the places visited had no direct connection with the work in which members of the Institute are normally engaged. It was refreshing and stimulating to see important and involved operations normally outside ones own trend of life and to have experts to speak about technical, financial and matters of general interest concerning their work, not forgetting their troubles and problems and how they overcame them. Carlton Centre The members of the Institute were received by Mr D. Appleton, Public Relations Officer of the Carlton Centre Limited, who introduced Mr L. R. M. Fee of W. Rhodes Harrison, Architect in charge of the project; Mr W. C. E. Skilton of Murray and Roberts, the Engineer in charge of the construction of the complex and Mr A. Home the Senior Operating Engineer of Carlton Centre Limited. Each of these gentlemen addressed the members giving short rundowns on the project with special reference to their particular sphere of the undertaking. A variety of particularly interesting statistics relating to the planning construction and the ultimate operation and maintenance of the complex was given. Mining engineers present had an opportunity to compare the problems encountered by them associated with depth to problems encountered by the civil engineer in the construction of a building rising to such an enormous height. To some of the members a sense of similarity of the labour problems encountered must have been recognised. After tea the visitors were divided into groups, each under the guidance of an official, and then visited the highest floor accessible and thereafter the 19th floor where the internal arrangements for airconditioning, lighting, plumbing, power supply and communication arrangements were explained. Thereafter a visit to one of the seven basements which houses all machinery required to serve this enormous complex enabled the visitors to see the standby power arrangements as well as the refrigeration plant. The visit finished in time to proceed to the Crest Hotel in Hillbrow for lunch. To our hosts for the visit to the Carlton Complex a special vote of thanks is recorded. Strydom Tower In the afternoon the party proceeded to the Strydom Tower where Mr Knight from the Public Works Department who was the Engineer in charge of the construction of the tower gave details on the construction and the extraordinary methods which had to be adopted to achieve the desired objectives and to overcome known as well as unforeseen difficulties. The comparatively short time taken to complete the project and the good safety record appeared to impress the visitors. The final phase of the visit was taken care of by Mr Bothma of Telecommunications Department of the Post Office, who gave an extremely interesting explanation of the telecommunication organization of the Post Office with particular reference to the part the Hillbrow Tower plays in the South African telecommunication system. Both gentlemen answered many questions willingly and interestingly. Following the explanatory talks the visitors were shown the technical equipment housed in the two top levels of the tower. Short explanatory talks gave members an insight into the workings of one of the most important aspects of modern life. Even to the amateur photographer opportunities existed to view and photograph the city from the highest available observation point. We are indebted to Mr Gouws, the Regional Director of the Post Office for granting permission to visit sections of the tower normally not accessible to the general public and to our hosts for the manner in which we were received and entertained on the explanation of the many interesting features of this important installation. In conclusion, the programme for the day can be classified as interesting, of exceptional educational value, and an opportunity to see something of the engineering skills put into two vast and ambitious undertakings and the results achieved.
