[In an endeavor to promote greater efficiency in the lime industry, the United States Bureau of Mines is preparing a series of preliminary reports dealing with particular problems of the industry. Through the circulation of these reports, it is hoped that sufficient interest may develop among lime-plant operators to prompt them to discuss with the bureau their our experiences with these problems. By such an interchange of ideas, it is believed that conclusion may be reached which will be of practical benefit to try entire industry. The first report, "Stripping problems it Limestone quarries of the Shenondoah Valley", Serial No. 2401, was issued during October, 1922. This report t is the second of the series. It is hoped that may operators will contribute additions to the information now at hand.]

"Holographic interferometry is a non-destructive technique to detect small deformations1 of an object. It is a whole-field technique· with an accuracy of a few microns. An adaptation of holographic interferometry is time-averaged holographic interferometry which is particularly useful in detecting small vibration amplitudes of an object under investigation. Its application to biological tissue is especially difficult due to the combination of (a) the high sensitivity of the technique, and (b) the tendency of these objects to deform excessively, or move during the testing period. (This is also compounded by the changing moisture content of the tissue surface.)Ideally, a pulsed laser and fast-acting thermoplastic film camera could be chosen to overcome these difficulties, but the total equipment cost could exceed $75,000. In this paper we describe our relatively economical method to apply time· averaged holographic interferometry to an excised animal lung, utilizing holographic plates and a mechanically-shuttered continuous-wave Argon laser.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe schematic of the experimental setup is shown in Fig. 1. The holographic equipment, including the laser, is fixed on a 3 ft x 6 ft x 4 in. honeycomb holographic table. This table is functionally similar to one described by Mark and Horsch2 which can be constructed for about one thousand dollars. The holographic table itself rests on six inner tubes to absorb floor vibrations. All unnecessary vibrations must be reduced to preserve the quality of the holograms. A laser beam from a 0.5-watt continuous-wave Argon laser is split by a circular variable beamsplitter (Newport Corporation Model 50GOOAV.1) into two beams, i.e., an object beam and a reference beam. The object beam is again split into two beams of equal intensity by a 50150 beamsplitter (Newport ·Corporation Model BS.1). These beams are optically filtered and expanded by spatial filters (Newport Corporation Model 910) to cover as much area of the object as possible. Soft biological tissues exhibit low reflectives, resulting in a relatively high reference to object beam ratio of roughly 5 : 1 at the holographic plate."

The thermal reactions of l-methylindole were studied in the temperature range of 525° to 627° C in a flow reactor. The major products consisted of 2-methylindole, 3-methylindole, indole, quinoline, hydrogen, and methane. 2-Methylindole is formed from 1-methylindole by an irreversible isomerization reaction. The 2-methylindole isomerizes in a reversible manner to 3-methyl-indole, the equilibrium favoring the 3-methyl isomer. Indole is formed directly from 1-methylindole. Quinoline is formed from l-methylindole, 2-methylindole, and 3-methylindole.

The experimental work reported upon herein was performed at the laboratory of the United States fuel-testing plant on the grounds of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition at St. Louis, Mo., between Janu- ary 1, 1905, and July 31, 1906, and was undertaken for the purpose of checking the results obtained in the routine work of the laboratory, improving the methods of working, and investigating the chemical and physical properties of coal. The laboratory having been designed primarily for the analysis of the coal samples sent to the fuel-testing plant, as well as those taken in connection with the regular testing operations of the boiler, gas-producer, and other divisions of the plant, only a very small proportion of the time of the force was available for experimental work outside of the regular routine. From the nature of such work it was not possible to separate the results obtained in 1905 from those obtained in 1906, especially as many of the experiments, such as those on the alteration of coal, involved a long time and were started in 1905 and continued to the middle of 1906. This report therefore covers all such work up to its completion in July, 1906. The complete history of the coals used in these experiments is not given, the samples being usually referred to by their laboratory num- bers only, as such information is generally not necessary and does not affect the interpretation of the results obtained in the experiments. Fuller information as to any particular sample may be found in the published reports of the fuel-testing plant for 1905 and 1906. In the following pages the results of each line of experimental work are given under a special heading indicating the object of the investigation.

Figure 1 is a reproduction of a chart recently prepared by the Bureau of Mines at its Pittsburgh Laboratory to show the Bureau's approval work in connection with electrically operated mining equipment. Nearly 27 years of approval work, covering 346 approved units, are shown on this chart. These approvals are arranged according to year of approval and the manufacturer to whom approval was granted. Forty-five manufacturers are represented, and a scheme of using various colored tabs permits the following subdivision of the equipment: Cutting machines, loading machines, conveyors, battery-operated locomotives, battery-operated power trucks, drills and drilling machines, rock-lusting machines, pumps, room hoists, air compressors,, and miscellaneous, The greatest number of approvals granted to a single manufacturer is 80; the next highest is 65, and the third is 49. Several manufacturers have been granted only a single approval. The chart shows all approvals granted for, motored equipment. Some of these units have since become obsolete, and a few are used to a very limited, extent if at all.

"INTRODUCTION The Cline mine has been worked intermittently for copper and gold since 1895. Scheelite has recently been detected with the aid of a ""Mineralite"" on the old waste dumps of the mine. Four diamond-drill holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines from August 13 to September 25, 1946. Results of this drilling showed the vein to pinch at depth and to carry no mineralization of economic importance.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. This interpretation of the laws of Haiti has been prepared from the best available information in Washington, but is released subject to correction and amplification , if necessary , by the proper American diplomatic and consular officers to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State .

SUMMARY The objective of this program was to develop a system to extinguish coal mine fires by remote sealing of the underground passageways. The system developed had to be versatile enough to function under a wide range of operating conditions, including large variations in passageway geometry, depth of mine, water conditions, both in the mine and at the surface, and rubble in the mine passage. The system developed had to include instrumentation for the remote probing of the passageway prior to sealing, a system for sealing the mine passages, and instrumentation for remote monitoring of the quality of the seal during and after construction. These objectives were successfully achieved during this program. The remote mine sealing capability of the system was satisfactc rely demonstrated in a field test conducted at the Eastern Associated Coal Corporation Federal No. 1 Mine in Grant Town, West Virginia. The remote sealing consists of: (1) A sonar initial probing system which can operate satisfactorily even in the presence of dense smoke. The system is capable of determining both the local passageway geometry, identifying the presence of cribs and other obstructions, and the position of the borehole in the mine passage. (2) A mine sealing material system which utilizes fly ash for making the complete seal or as a bulk filler in conjunction with a urethane, froth foam, seal topping system. The choice of using fly ash alone or fly ash with foam topping depends on a number of factors, such as quality of seal desired, time available per seal, depth of borehole, passageway geometry, and water holding require¬ment. Bulk carriers, freighters, and tankers are the three classes of seagoing vessels engaged in transporting mineral commodities. However, vessels in these classes are not exclusively devoted to mineral commodity transport. Bulk carriers move considerable tonnages of agricultural products as well as crude minerals, their concentrates, mineral fertilizers, and the like. Freighters, owing to their great variety, can be devoted wholly to hauling mineral products or wholly to nonmineral goods, as well as carrying mixed mineral commodities and nonmineral commodities. They include general cargo ships, full container ships, partial container ships, roll-on/roll-offships, and barge carriers. Tankers, although largely engaged in moving crude oil and refinery products, also transport liquid chemicals, molasses, wine, liquefied natural gas, and other fluids. Although physical characteristics of vessels such as size, draft, crew requirements, type of propulsion system, ratio of gross tonnage to cargo tonnage, and fuel costs have undeniable influences on shipping industry performance, problems of and changes in the quantity and types of materials moved also significantly affect the shipping sector of the world economy, and thus have a bearing on the minerals sector of that aggregate. Unfortunately, comprehensive global data reflecting changes in these critical variables are not published.

Sponge iron is the metallic product resulting from the reduction (removal of combined oxygen) of iron ore or other iron oxides at a temperature below the fusion point of iron. It has been used for many years in the production of certain grades of high-quality steel, such as tool and cutlery steels. The sponge iron available commercially in limited quantities for such use was produced from high-grade ores that were almost free from the contaminating elements that are generally considered detrimental to the production of certain grades of carbon tool steel. Interest in sponge iron as a scrap substitute was revived when World War II began, when the serious shortage of scrap metals for use in the production of armament caused great concern as to whether steel production could be maintained at the rate necessary for vigorous prosecution of the war effort. Smoky River Coal Ltd. mines low-volatile metallurgical coal by surface and underground methods in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada. Current underground operations are confined to the 5B-4 Mine. Development of 5B-4 began in January 1998; production from depillaring sections commenced in July 1998. This paper describes the history of underground mining on the Smoky River property in terms of extraction methods and pillar design. The development of the present pillar design guidelines is discussed in this context. Recent work to prepare a number of case histories for back-analysis using the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) method is described, along with the modifications developed for calculating the ARMPS stability factor for retreat extraction of thick seams. The design criteria are described, as well as the geotechnical program implemented in order to verify its applicability.

Of all the war work by the Bureau of Mines none ultimately covered such a variety of processes and equipment, employed as many men, or called for as large an outlay as that started in con- nection with the solution of problems relating to the use of noxious gases in warfare. Beginning with an investigation to develop the best type of gas mask, the scope of the work extended until it included researches relating to a wide range of devices, such as different types of poisonous and irritating gases and smokes, smoke screens, gas shells and gas bombs, flame throwers, trench projectors for firing gas bombs, signal lights, and incendiary bombs. The Bureau of Mines in starting this work selected the necessary personnel, pro- cured the early equipment, and for some months, from the begin- ning to June 30, 1917, paid the cost of the work from its own funds. The Bureau of Mines built up a research staff of more than 700 chemists, including many of the most prominent chemists in the country, and obtained the cooperation of many of the universities and chemical companies. When the results obtained through this research were to be applied by the War Department, the Director of the Bureau of Mines cooperated in the selection of men to have charge of manufacture or further development, recommending chemiste who subsequently received commissions in the Army. The personal cooperation with the War Department was thus very close. The bureau can fairly claim that because it started this work on gas warfare and received the hearty support of the Department of War, the Navy Department, the National Research Council, and State, educational, and private institutions, the country was in July, 1918, months ahead of where it would otherwise have been in the production of gas masks and other devices. The production of toxic gases then far exceeded the supply of shells. In addition the later work in gas-mask manufacture by the Surgeon General's Office of the Army, which resulted in the development of the best mask produced anywhere; in gas manufacture and gas proving-ground tests by the Bureau of Ordnance, and in the chemical warfare pro- gram of the Navy, including the use of smoke screens, shells and toxic gases, were the direct results of the bureau's experimental work. The American charcoal and soda lime, developed through the research work, are the best used by any nation. The Bureau of Mines was instrumental in developing satisfactory methods of manu- facturing chlorpicrin, phosgene, mustard gas, brombenzylcyanide, cyanogen chloride, and other noxious substances on a large scale. The bureau also developed a smoke funnel for the Navy which no doubt saved many ships from submarine attacks, and devised smoke barrages, signal lights, incendiary darts, etc., for the Army. The Ordnance Department of the Army asked for incendiary bombs and were furnished with bombs better than any made previously. Perhaps the greatest single result of the research work has been the demonstration of the value of the services that the chemist and chemical engineer can render in time of need and the recogni- tion of chemical investigations as a necessary function of the Gov- ernment.

 The Bureau of Mines, in conducting investigations of atmospheres in mines and tunnels for the purposes of determining and combating hazards to the health and safety of workers, has from time to time closely cooperated with municipal, State and Federal agencies in safety work in engineering and ventilating probleme. Recently the writers have conducted experiments with animals and men breathing helium-oxygen mixtures under pressure. The object of this work was to determine whether helium-oxygen atmospheres can be utilized to advantage in place of normal air for caisson and diving work. In such work the permissible pressures and times of compression and decompression are limited by the physiological effects on man. The major effect is that the nitrogen, (which is the inert con- stituent of normal air and is absorbed by the body tissues and fluids in abnormal amounts when under pressure,) tends to form bubbles in the tissues on too rapid discompression from high pressures. The Bureau of Mines is interested in this problem on account of the pos- sibilities of mitigating caisson illness in tunnel construction and other engine eering operations requiring men to work in compressed air. In addition, the Navy Department is interested on account of the possibilities for extending the range of salvaging and marine engineering operations. The results of the experiments conducted by the writers lead to the following conclusions: Helium is without odor or taste and has physical properties which promise to be of interest physiologically and which have been found to have possibilities of creat practical use, especially in making a synthetic atmosphere that will re- duce the hazard of caisson disease. The substitution of helium for the nitrogen ordinarily present in the air we breathe has been found to result in an atmosphere which it as respirable as that provided by nature. The Location Group conversed in the Petroleum Room of the Green Center with the purpose of addressing the following list of topics in light of the Bureau of Mines' requirements for detecting and locating trapped miners by electromagnetic methods. These topics include: Noise, Sources, Antennas (transmit and receive), the Propagation Medium, Signal Processing, Optimum Frequency, Receivers, Pulse vs. CW Techniques, Passive Location Techniques, and Obstacles. Practical constraints such as equipment size, weight and power requirements, cost and intrinsic safety were kept in mind during these discussions. It was emphasized that in-mine equipment must be inexpensive, rugged, simple and lightweight. Otherwise, the mine operators probably would not buy it nor would the miners be able to effectively use it. Present techniques for experimentally detecting and locating trapped miners were discussed, along with techniques to improve their location accuracy. Analytical, numerical, and scale modelling methods were considered as a means of giving further insight into measurement, anomalies caused by terrain variations, conductivity contrasts, and obstacles. After discussion of these topics, conclusions were drawn and existing problem areas were identified. These problem areas were addressed in developing guidelines for future efforts. Following the discussion period, the Chairman gave a summary of the Location Group report and comments were solicited from the entire group. 2.0 GROUP DISCUSSION HIGHLIGHTS 2.1 Noise W. Bensema asked the group whether the noise data provided by NBS was adequate. It was determined that for location systems analysis, the most important form of noise data was the frequency spectra of vertical and horizontal magnetic fields on the surface, and the answer to his question was affirmative. Drs. Wait and Frischknecht pointed out the difficulty in accurately measuring the true vertical magnetic field since these measurements are heavily influenced by the loop setting and the local geology. "Explosive gas mixtures are characterized by their ability to undergo a self-accelerating reaction that may culminate in ignition. In the case of methane and air there are two interdependent causes of this acceleration. First, if a sufficiently fast reaction is induced, heat may be evolved faster than it is lost to the surroundings; consequently, the temperature rises and the reaction rate increases. Second, the reaction rate is determined not only by temperature but by the concentration of reactive intermediate products if the latter increases during the course of the reaction the rate will increase. To understand the role of these active intermediates, it should be realized that molecules of methane and oxygen, per se, show little tendency to react with each other even at high temperatures.(1) If, however, free radicals like OH and CH3, are present in the mixture, the methane and oxygen are attacked in the reactions(2):In these reactions the radicals are regenerated, and thus a chain of reactions is set up by an individual radical or chain carrier which is broken only if the latter is destroyed in some process. Not all collisions of a chain carrier with CH4 or 02 result in reaction, since one requirement for a successful collision is that the colliding particles have a certain minimum energy. The percentage of collisions in which this energy condition is fulfilled increases with temperature, so that for equal chain-breaking probabilities the length of the reaction chain increases with increasing temperature. Thus, there exists an interplay of temperature and concentration of chain carriers that determines the reaction rate. To carry the rate to the stage of self-acceleration, higher temperatures are required for lower than for higher chain-carrier concentrations, other conditions being equal."

THIS CHAPTER concerns such minor nonmetals as greensand, meerschaum, mineral wool, staurolite, and wollastonite. GREENSAND Output of greensand (glauconite) was slightly higher than in 1958. Open pits of The Kaylorite Corp. (Calvert County, Md.), National Soil Conservation, Inc. (Burlington County, N.J.), and Inversand Co." (Gloucester County, N.J.) accounted for the entire production. Soil conditioning used about 72 percent of the greensand sold. The remainder was used as a water-softening agent. Prices for greensand, f.o.b. mine, ranged from $13 to $70 per short ton.

"HISTORYThe origin of roof bolting as a means of roof support is obscure. During the past 23 years a method was developed by the. St. Joseph Lead Co: at its mines in southeastern Missouri, ranging from occasional use of single bolts with small bearing plates to systematic networks of bolts utilizing continuous bearing plates. Officials of this company are not certain which of its employees suggested their use. Many instances of occasional use of roof bolts have come to light during the past few years in widely separated mining districts, such as in West Virginia, Alabama, Illinois, Colorado, and Wyoming bituminous coal mines, and in Pennsylvania anthracite, Lake Superior iron, and Colorado lead-zinc mines. A few of the known installations have boon in place as long as 40 years.These installations usually were made to supplement wooden timbering in mine openings whore space was constricted, although it had been reported that roof bolting was started as a systematic moans of roof support in at least three instances but was abandoned because the cost of installation was excessive. The extra expense above that of conventional timbering could not be recaptured through economies resulting from increased efficiency, such as would be gained through mechanized mining.Roof bolting was first mentioned in mining literature in an article by W. W. Weige 3/ in Engineering and Mining Journal of May 1943, in which he described the use of bolts with 4-inch channel bearing plates in mines of the St. Joseph Load Co."

The Bureau of Mines has been carrying on an extensive diamond- drilling program during the past 7 years on deposits of strategic and critical minerals . Often the project reports and the drill-hole logs describe the findings only in terms of the mineral being sought at the time . Then , too , results may not always be interpreted alike by several mining engineers , and the cores therefore provide a permanent tangible record to complement the project reports . The cores from projects in the eastern divisions are being stored at the Mount Weather Testing Adit . Core from a representative hole ( or skeletonized sections from several holes , if these are more representative ) is selected at each project and shipped to Mount Weather for permanent storage . At the Testing Adit an underground room was prepared and storage racks were installed . Wooden core trays designed to accommodate cores of various sizes were purchased .

"During recovery operations following a recent coal-mine explosion, 12 small fires were encountered near the break line of pillar extraction in a large panel. All of the fires except one were quickly extinguished by the rescue and recovery parties. This fire had found its way into a large quantity of loose material at a corner of the cut-through between two rooms, about 100 to 150 feet from the break line of an extensive goaf; had it been necessary to seal the fire, the inclusion of this break line not only would have made the work difficult but would have made the section hazardous as it probably would have given off gas. The fire covered a floor space of about 100 square feet and when discovered was burning briskly, with the flame extending to the roof at a height of 3 or 4 feet; it was the cause of much apprehension on the part of those in charge of the recovery operations and resulted in delaying the work considerablyThe object of this article is to describe in detail the method by which the fire was brought under control and finally extinguished, so that other persons encountering similar conditions may have the benefit of the experience.When the fire was discovered a request for rock-dust, fire extinguishers, and other fire fighting equipment was telephoned to headquarters on the surface. The promptness with which fire fighting equipment and material was provided was a big factor in finally extinguishing the fire and illustrates one of the many advantages of a good organization for fire-fighting. Material was transported in mine cars to a point on the main hauling road about 1,200 feet from the fire. It was then carried to the scene of activity by workmen. The first material to be delivered at the fire was a number of fire extinguishers of various types. The contents of 30 to 35 of these were discharged on the fire and with the aid of a small quantity of rock-dust were sufficient to smother the flame temporarily. It was the opinion of several persons who were present when the fire extinguishers were used that the acid-soda type of extinguisher gave more effective results than the two or three other types used.When the contents of all of the fire extinguishers had been exhausted the fire was temporarily smothered, but as there appeared to be danger that the flame would burst forth again, means for completely extinguishing the fire were"
