Native asphalt was produced in 1980 by six companies in four States. Leading States were Texas and Utah. Output decreased 22% in 1980 to 1.25 million tons while value decreased 2% to $25.0 million. Bituminous limestone was produced by Whites Uvalde Mines and by Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co. in Uvalde County, Tex.; by Southern Stone Co. in Colbert, Ala.; and by Barton County Rock Asphalt Co. in Barton County, Mo. The product was used mainly in street and road repair. Gilsonite was produced by American Gilsonite Co. in Uinta County, Utah, and by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. in Weber County, Utah. This material was used for purposes other than road repair.

The papers contained herein summarize results of various recent Bureau of Mines investigations in the area of mine power distribution systems. They are based on information from Bureau personnel, contractors and grantees, and Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration. Conclusions drawn from a series of parameter measurements on mine power systems, taken over a 3-year span, are presented. Personnel and equipment hazards due to faults on isolated, solidly grounded, and resistance grounded three-phase systems are discussed. Two papers cover dc applications of circuit breakers, including a novel protection scheme for trolley lines. The methods of suppressing induced arcing currents and voltages in a-c machines are evaluated. An evaluation program for ground monitors is described. Acceptance test procedures and the importance of various paparameters for trailing cable splice are covered. A number of techniques for locating faults in trailing cables are described.

This is the second of a series of reports on a survey of petroleum products manufactured on the Pacific Coast from California crude oils. California crudes differ in many characteristics from the petroleum produced in other parts of the United States, and the claim has been made that some of the present federal Specifications for petroleum products tend to discriminate against California products. The purposes of the present survey are to determine what particular specification requirements California petroleum products characteristically fail to meet, how widely the products deviate from these requirements, and if possible to show whether the fault lies with the specifications or the products, or along what 'lines investigation to determine the question should proceed. The first report* of the series gave the physical and chemical properties of gasoline and mineral spirits made from California crudes. The present report deals with lubricating oils. Sixty-one samples of lubricating stocks and finished commercial products were generously donated by four of the large refining companies of California. Fifteen samples of automobile lubricating oils, made in California from California crudes, were purchased in the open market. Nine samples of lubricating oils mode from Gulf Coast crude were contributed for comparison by a company in Texas. The refining companies have continued the helpful and cordial cooperation shown by them in connection with the earlier work of the survey.

An environment monitoring and communication system has been installed in the Bruceton Mine, and research is under way to improve mine safety. Standard day-to-day mine communications are available, along with additional systems installed to permit experimentation with wireless radio, through-the-earth phones, along-the-roof paging, and mine face machinery communications. Research is continuing and the essential concepts for a dependable whole mine communication system, providing simple environment monitoring, improved day-to-day communications and post-disaster communications, will be demonstrated in a larger mine with about 900 feet of overburden.

A dilute sulfuric-acid leach was developed for extracting lead and copper from lead blast furnace mattes and the chemistry was defined. The possible application of Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans to the problem of salvaging lead and copper from blast furnace mattes was also investigated. Operating conditions were varied to determine their effect on the oxidation and hence extraction of lead and copper from the matte. Conditions varied were temperature, pH, reaction time, aeration in the slurry, and particle size of the matte. A set of optimum conditions were developed that resulted in maximum lead and copper sulfide oxidation. Tests employing these optimum conditions resulted in 82.3 percent of the lead and 98.7 percent of the copper being extracted by a dilute acid leach, while maximum lead and copper extracted using F. ferrooxidans was 69.8 percent of the lead and 78.4 percent of the copper. Tests conducted with a different sample of blast furnace matte indicated that the dilute acid leach might have wide application in extracting lead and copper from other such blast furnace mattes.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of field tests to improve the understanding of the support interaction mechanics between fully grouted bolts and coal mine roofs and to help lay the foundation for improved design and evaluation techniques. Strain gauges were installed on 14 fully grouted bolts placed in shale roof rock at four mines in Colorado, Illinois, and Pennsylvania to determine how load was transferred between the bolts and the rock. The results of field tests on elastic bolt behavior compared well with previous laboratory work and numerical models. The field tests showed that the anchorage length of grouted bolts installed in shale was slightly longer than the anchorage length determined in laboratory tests conducted in concrete blocks. The field results produced more variability because of geological variations. Tests run past the yield point of the steel bolt indicate that the yield zone varies significantly and translates down the length of the bolt anywhere from 4 to 22 in.

That a close analogy exists between the flow of air in mines and the flow of current in electrical networks- has been known for a long time. The laws that have been used to solve series and parallel electrical circuits have been used to solve for the equivalent resistance in mine ventilation problems. Kirchhoff's current and voltage laws have also been adopted in solving mine ventilation network problems. It will be best to define a few terms here regarding networks, and with reference to Figure 1, these definitions can be elucidated. Figure 1 can be represented by the network in Figure 2 without losing any essential details. 1. A junction is a point where two or more airways meet. 2. The segment of a roadway connecting any two junctions is known as a branch. 3. A mesh is a closed path through the network. In the above network, B, C, D and F are the junctions, CF and CD are two of the branches and CFDC is a mesh. Kirchhoff's current law states that the sum of currents entering a junction. Applying this law to the junctions in the ventilation network, one obtains for junctions C and F, the following relationships: JUNCTION C: Q1 = Q4 + Q3 (1) JUNCTION F: Q2 + Q3 = Q5 (2) Similar relationships can be drawn for other junctions. Reduce dust at the auger mine face by modifying airflow patterns, around the minim machine. Approach Limited clearance between an auger miner and the mine root restricts airflow across the face and causes dust rollback. Directional sprays arc used to direct air across the face, thereby reducing dust rollback and increasing dust dilution (fig. 1). Laboratory and underground studies were used to test and optimize effectiveness of the directional sprays. Results of Laboratory Study Laboratory experiments were conducted in a simulated auger gallery equipped with a full-scale mock auger miner and bridge conveyor. A dual curtain configuration was used to direct the, ventilation, which averaged 2,700 cfm throughout the experiment. Testing variables included spray location, pressure, spacing, orientation, and number. Figure 2 shows the optimized directional spray system, also called the auger clearer spray system. The system consists of three sprays mounted alone the intake side of the miner. Sprays arc spaced 16 to 24 inches apart, and angled 30° toward the return side of the miner. The 24-inch spacing moved about 7% more air across the face than the 16-inch spacing; however, it resulted in some additional misting on the return side of the miner. A 30° orientation was more effective than a 60° orientation for moving air across the face and minimizing misting on the return side of the miner. Flat fan sprays arc used because their spray paths arc not obstructed by the top of the miner and mine roof, A 50° fan angle is used to minimize misting on the intake side of the miner.

Most stone mines are limestone mines, but a substantial minority are marble, sandstone, and granite mines. These mines differ from most others in that entry widths are 30 ft or more and entry heights are 25 ft or more. Such mines, developed with room-and-pillar methods, have large open areas that can make ventilation and dust control more difficult. Because of the difficulty of ventilating stone mines, improved ventilation is a major focal point of this chapter. However, the chapter also covers the control of dust from drills, blasting, and crushers. Another part of the chapter covers enclosed cabs, an effective dust control technique for some workers. BACKGROUND The major dust compliance problem in stone mines is caused by silica (quartz) in the rock. Mines in high-silica rock, 8% or more, are far more likely to have a dust problem than those where there is less silica. Geographically, the limestone in the Northeastern and South Central United States has higher silica than the rest of the country. Chekan and Colinet [2002] have analyzed Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) dust sampling results [MSHA 2001] from the stone industry. They have concluded that, on average across the United States, the workers exposed to the highest dust concentrations are rotary drill operators, front-end loader operators, truck drivers, and crusher operators. However, there are many regional differences. Also, occupations that work outside of cabs, such as blasters, roof bolters, and laborers, can be exposed to high dust levels.

"Cooperation was arranged between the mine operators, the Michigan College of Mines and Technology, and the Bureau of Mines for a study of present milling practice in the copper district of Michigan. Work was actively commenced in January, 1928.In Michigan copper occurs almost wholly as native copper. An insignificant amount of copper sulphide is present. The native copper occurs in two general classes of formations--namely, amygdalaid and conglomerate.In respect to ore dressing, the outstanding peculiarities of the two types of copper are: (1) In the amygdaloid, the relative coarseness of the metallic copper, which is almost completely liberated at approximately 48-mesh comminution; (2) the sprangly and flakey physical character of much of the liberated copper after crushing; (3) in the conglomerate, the extremely fine dissemination of the metallic copper, which is not completely liberated by crushing to -200 mesh.Because the study to date has been confined almost wholly to amygdaloid ores, the conglomerate class is not considered herein. The conglomerate ore is being efficiently treated, and the loss of copper is small.The amygdaloid ore contains a silicious gangue of which 80 per cent has a specific gravity of less than 2.84, 92 per cent of less than 2.94, and 98 per cent of less than 3.17. Epidote of 3.25 specific gravity is noticeably present, and accumulates on the table concentrators, from which it is hard to make clean con¬centrate and middling recovery.The general nature of the amygdaloid ores varies a little from mine to mine, but the general characteristics are the same, as is shown later by flotation tests."

Longwall production levels are high, and there are several different sources of dust to contend with. If dust levels are high, the initial effort should be devoted to finding which source is the cause. Then, efforts to reduce dust can be concentrated where they will have the most impact. To control dust at longwalls, a large amount of ventilation air and spray water must be used. The water must be sprayed correctly so as not to blow dust into the walkway. Techniques to change local airflow patterns can be helpful. The shearer-clearer, as well as gob and wing curtains, are examples of such techniques. To provide a means for mechanically separating and recovering nonferrous metals continuously from non-magnetic reject material produced at scrap automobile shredding facilities. Approach The Bureau of Mines developed a water elutriator system that separates metals from shredded scrap auto-mobiles based on differences in specific gravities. A premium-quality product, containing aluminum, magnesium, lead, zinc die cast, copper, copper alloys, and stainless steels, is obtained. How It Works Mixed nonmagnetic reject material currently being separated at automobile shred-ding facilities is introduced onto the top of an upwardly flowing vertical column of water. The water, overflowing a weir in the top of the vertical column, carries with it the floating, lightweight waste materials, mostly combustibles, while the heavier pieces sink through the rising water. Medium-density substances such as glass, rubber, and heavy plastics are carried off through a side port, located in the upper third of the column. The cleaned, mixed metal product sinks to the bottom and is continuously removed from the base of the column with a bucket elevator having perforated buckets. All three categories of material are removed from the system on separate wire mesh belt conveyors. Most of the water drains through the belts into a holding tank and, after settling, is recirculated back through the elutriator column. The purity and recovery of the metal product are influenced by two elutriator operating variables: the flow rate of water through the vertical column, and the height of the overflow weir at the top of the column.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and small-scale continuous tests of kyanite ore from Georgia to determine the technical feasibility of recovering commercial-grade kyanite concentrates by flotation. The research indicated that combinations of sulfuric acid and petroleum sulfonate may be used effectively for flotation of kyanite from quartzite-kyanite ore. Over 87 percent of the kyanite was recovered in a concentrate analyzing 55.8 percent A1203 and 5.3 percent acid-soluble Fe203. Subsequent treatment of the flotation concentrate by high-intensity wet magnetic separation reduced the acid-soluble Fe203 to 0.8 percent and increased the alumina content to 57.6 percent, with a recovery of 82.7 percent of the total alumina in the ore.

Improve underground long-hole drilling efficiency and safety by developing a lightweight, easily transportable drilling pust that can be adjusted to fit a range of mine opening heights. Background Standard one-piece commercially available steel posts weigh approximately 10 pounds per foot. Transporting these posts underground and carrying them over obstacles and through small mine doors is very difficult. Because the length of a one-piece post cannot be adjusted, variations in mine opening height at the drilling site must be accommodated. This is accomplished by stacking several wooden blocks to form a base for the post, resulting in a dangerously unstable drilling setup. The only alternative to this unstable setup is to obtain a longer post. There problems can be reduced by the use of a two-piece telescoping aluminum post having a 3-foot adjustment range in 6-inch increments. The two-piece extendable post will be easy to transport and carry underground. It will fit any opening height within its adjustment range. One large wooden block is used as a base and one cap block is used at the top to bear against the mine roof. This arrangement results in a stable, rigid setup.

The Bureau of Mines, in a continuing effort to improve processes and methods of helium purification, has developed a differential distillation method for removing helium-3 from helium-4. Differential distillation at 4.2 to 1.6 K was used to reduce the helium-3 in helium-4 from about 200 to less than 1 part per billion. The results from four stills ranging in size from 1 to 25 liters are reported. The method has the potential to be adapted to commercial-scale separations.

A series of alloys was laboratory prepared by adding up to 4 weight-percent cobalt to the basic composition of type AM 350 (AISI 633) stainless steel. Aging curves were established for each alloy at 750° F, 850° F, and 950° F for lengths of time up to 100 hours. A series of annealed steels containing as much as 1 weight-percent cobalt was cold-rolled 50 percent and aged for 3 hours at 850° F. No improvement in hardness due to cobalt was observed in the steels transformed by heat treatment. Slight improvements in hardness were observed in the steels transformed by cold working.

This investigation by the Bureau of Mines demonstrated that building bricks can be produced by the steam-curing process from various types of industrial mineral wastes. Wastes, utilized to produce bricks, consisted of copper mill tailings, roofing granule fines, asbestos fines, and zinc mill tailings. Bonding of the wastes with either Ca(OH)2 or portland cement resulted in building bricks that met ASTM specification C73-67 for grade SW and MW bricks when evaluated in accordance with ASTM designation C67-66 on sampling and testing of brick. An economic evaluation of the process indicates the total operating cost per 1,000 bricks is about $36.
