As a part of the work which the Bureau of Mines carried out in 1916 and 1917 pertaining to the compressibility of natural gas , it became necessary to de termine the pressure -volume relations of several of the paraffin hydrocarbons of which natural gas is composed . Results of the work on natural gas were published in Technical papers 131 (Burrell , G.A. , and Robertson , I.W. , The compressibility of natural gas to high pressure , Bureau of Mines Tech . Paper 131 , 1916 , 12 pp. ) and 158 (Burrell , G.A. , and Robertson , I.W. , Compressibility of natural gas and its constituents with analyses of natural gas from 31 cities in the United States , Bureau of Mines Tech . Paper 158 , 1917 , 12 pp . ) , and curves were given of pressure volume deviations of the gases , methane , ethane , propane , and carbon dioxide at high pressures . original experimental data on these gases , however , were not published . The In view of many inquiries which the Bureau has received with reference to the original data on the se gases , and the importance of the pressure -volume relations from which it is possible to calculate the deviation of any natural gas who se composition is known , the original data as determined by Burrell and Robertson are pre sented below .

"The size of off-highway trucks has increased substantially over the last decade, bringing about a radical change in truck maintenance practices and procedures. As a result, surface mine maintenance mechanics today are faced with the increased hazards of working with larger and heavier tools and components and doing repairs at greater heights, thereby exposing them to a high potential for serious injury or death. Not surprisingly, the number of accidents involving truck maintenance mechanics is significantly increasing.The Bureau of Mines has assessed the haulage truck maintenance safety problem, analyzing maintenance-accident data over the 7-yr period, 1978- 84, in terms of personnel, job activities, truck components and systems, tools involved, and truck design. This assessment, based on the review and interpretation of 1,225 haulage truck maintenance accident reports, identified major factors contributing to these accidents. Overall, young, inexperienced workers are involved in most accidents. A typical maintenance accident involves a male mechanic under 33 yr old, with less than 5 yr job experience. INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, surface mine maintenance and repair operations have changed radically. The number of maintenance personnel has grown along with the hazards of working with larger and heavier components at greater heights and with larger and heavier tools. Furthermore, transfer of skills from over-the-road vehicle mechanics is not as feasible as it once was, because of the ever increasing size of mining equipment and the complexity of its design. In short, surf ace mine equipment maintenance and repair has become increasingly sophisticated as well as labor intensive, necessitating further research and evaluation in terms of both safety and efficiency (1, 7-8) 2"

Workers exposed to certain inhaled dusts may show increased levels of nonspecific airways responsiveness (AR). In some studies, cigarette smokers have also been reported to have increased levels of AR. As part of an ongoing study, we compared the results of preshift methacholine inhalation challenge, spirometry, and smoking and occupational histories, in 191 under-ground bituminous coal miners (M) and 215 non-mining control workers· (C) . All M and c were selected to have normal baseline% predicted FEVI (PPFEV). Mining tenure was recorded as years worked underground (YRUG) and at the coal face (YRFC). AR was assessed as the% decrease in FEVI from baseline divided by the dose of methacholine delivered. M reported similar years smoked (YRSM) but fewer pack-years* (PY) than c~ Overall, both increasing YRSM and PY were associated with more AR*. Smoking C* but not M showed increased AR with increasing PY. In smoking and nonsmoking M, baseline AR and PPFEV showed no association with YRUG. The level of AR was inversely related to YRFC*, possibly representing selection away from dustier jobs. AR was inversely correlated with PPFEV*. Hematite-to-magnetite reduction kinetics were investigated mainly in CO-CO2 atmospheres at temperatures ranging from 500° to 1,000° C. Reduction rates were measured with a thermobalance, which recorded the weight loss as the specimen was reduced. Reduction data on both synthetic and natural hematite spheres showed good linearity of ro [1-(1-R)1/3] with time, t, up to over 85 pct conversion to magnetite; the rate coefficient (k[L], cm/min) obtained from the linear portion of the plot was used to characterize the penetration rate of the hematite-magnetite interface. Gas composition, porosity, and silica content were major factors affecting the rate. Temperature dependency of the reaction rate was small, yielding a mean activation energy of about 3 kcal/mole. Silica additions increased the reaction rate, probably through an increase in the effective surface area and diffusion; however, above 900° C, silica can react to form fayalite. Experimental data showed that the linear thickening rate of the magnetite layer, normally evidence of a chemically controlled reaction, can also be indicative of a reaction controlled by both mass transfer and diffusion. Evidence from this study indicates that the dominant rate-controlling factor in the reduction of hematite to magnetite at high temperatures is transport in the gas phase.

The Bureau of Mines developed laboratory-scale processes to recover sodium phosphates and metal values from waste sludges generated by the phosphate treatment of automobile and appliance components. After treatment of the sludge with NaOH, followed by coke or hydrogen reduction and sintering, zinc and lead were recovered as fume; the sinter was separated by leaching into a metallic product, chiefly iron and nickel, and high-purity disodium or trisodium phosphate.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the main reactions of coal gasification by steam. Coal (minus 70 mesh)-water slurry was fed into a laboratory-scale tube-coil gasifier to show the effects of residence time (0.6 to 1.1 sec), steam-coal ratio (2 to 11 lb/lb), and temperature (1,600° to 1,900° F), at about 1-1/2 atm. Devolatilization was very rapid: about 70 pet of the coal&apos;s volatile matter evolved within 0.6 sec at about 1,600° F; temperature increase released more volatile matter until about 95 pct was driven off at 1,900° F. Devolatilization was not increased by raising steam concentrations and was only slightly increased by extending residence time. Below 1,600° F, there was no evidence of the steam-carbon reaction, but at 1,900° F more than 80 pct of the coal&apos;s fixed carbon was converted to gas; the conversion was increased Significantly by increased residence time and steam concentration. The water-gas shift reaction occurred simultaneously with devolatilization, and the steam-carbon reaction, approaching equilibrium with increased residence time and temperature and decreased steam concentration.

Assist in controlling or extinguishing fires that occur in abandoned mine lands (AML) by providing a compilation of information on past fire control projects, the estimated extent of the current problem, and factors affecting the occurrence, propagation, and extinguishment of AML tires. Conventional fire control methods and their probable effectiveness are evaluated. Background Fires that occur in abandoned coal mines, waste banks, and coal outcrops constitute a serious health, safety, and environmental hazard from toxic fumes, deterioration of air quality, and subsidence. Although fires on AML occur in every coal-producing State, the severity of the problem varies, with most underground fires occurring in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Wyoming. Surface fires are prevalent in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Methods to extinguish or control AML fires, including excavation, fire barriers, and scaling, are generally expensive and have a relatively low probability of success (see figures 1 and 2). Bureau of Mines Study The Bureau compiled information from a variety of sources and found that the problem of AML fires is a serious one. Such fires can involve a high degree of hazard and can be difficult and costly to control. AML fires usually involve smoldering combustion in outcrops, waste banks, or abandoned mines. Given the nature of these fires, it is unlikely that the extent of the problem or the cost of solutions will decrease in the near future.

The effect of the temperature of SmF3-LiF electrolyte on the electrolytic preparation of samarium-cobalt alloy by the consumable cathode technique was investigated. The temperatures of the cathode zone, alloy collection zone, and samarium oxide (Sm203) feed zone had to be controlled carefully to obtain a satisfactory samarium-cobalt alloy product. Any appreciable deviation from certain temperature values adversely affected yield and product quality.

The Bureau of Mines conducted re-search to determine the resistance of basic refractories to corrosion by ash slags that would result from the burning of coal and lignite in metallurgical operations. Basic refractories are of economic interest because they are from one-third to one-half as expensive as 90-to 99-pct-alumina refractories. Static tests were performed at 1,300° C and dynamic tests at 1,400° to 1,650° C to investigate the stability of refractory specimens in a slag environment. In alkali-containing lignite ash slags, in order of decreasing resistance, magnesite, magnesite-chrome, and chrome-magnesite refractories all had corrosion resistances equal to or better than 90-to 99-pct-alumina refractories. These basic refractories formed slag penetration layers in dynamic tests, which helped protect them from further attack. Chemically bonded basic refractories in general did not have as good a resistance to slag attack as did burned refractories of the same composition. In very acidic coal ash slag, a chrome-magnesite refractory containing 30 pct MgO plus a slag inhibitor and direct-bonded magnesite-chrome refractories with 60 pct MgO had good resistance to attack. Chrome-magnesite refractories (30 to 40 pct MgO) were moderately to severely attacked, and refractories with greater than 70 pct MgO were severely attacked by this same slag.

Variations between laboratories on the silica and alumina content of calcined kyanite led to this Bureau of Mines study of the extent and nature of the differences. In particular, Bureau scientists hoped the study would lead to correction of the causes of the dissimilarities. A sample of calcined Kenya kyanite was analyzed by seven different laboratories familiar with silicate analysis. The compiled data indicated differences originating from lack of recovery of silica after two acidic dehydrations, from high alumina caused by several factors, from loss or gain of iron during sample fusion, and from indifference regarding the accurate determination of minor constituents.

It is estimated that 6,202,235,000 gallons .of- gasoline was produced during the year 1922. The crude light oil- output Burin- the same year is estimated at 111,000,000 gallons, or 1.8 per cent of the gasoline production. In fact, if all the coal mined were coked in by-product ovens, and the light oil recovered therefrom, this product would amount to only 15 to 20 per cent of the quantity of the petroleum gasoline now produced annually. It is obvious therefore, from these figures that the light oils by present coking processes can not assume great importance as a gasoline substitute in a national sense. However, the use of light oil as a motor fuel is of real importance in districts adjacent to by-product coking operations from which a reasonable proportion of the local motor fuel supply may be derived. The certainty of diminution of petroleum resources in the relatively near future demands the utmost utilization of gasoline substitutes from the distillation of coal as well as other sources. Motor benzol is a by-product from the destructive distillation of coal. From 11/2 to 3 gallons of refined motor benzol is obtained per ton of coal carbonized. The light oil vapors are extracted from the by-product coke-oven gas by passing it upward through a series of towers in which these vapors are absorbed in a descending current of "wash" oil (petroleum distillate). The light, oil is recovered from this wash oil by distillation with live steam, the resulting crude light oil consisting of a mixture of benzol, toluol, xylol, solvent naphtha, and a small amount of other substances (unsaturated hydro-carbons, carbon disulphide, and other sulphur compounds, phenols and pyridines) is then transferred to an intermittent still and fractionated into crude motor benzol, which includes the toluol and a part of the xylol or light solvent naphtha. The crude, motor benzol is yellow in color, contains sulphur compounds which corrode copper and brass, and also contains unsaturated bodies which oxidize and polymerize on standing, producing sediment and forming gummy deposits highly objectionable when the benzol is used in motors. A study was made during 1959-60 of reported nelsonite occurrences in Nelson and Amherst Counties, Va. The investigation was limited to core drill- ing on one deposit and beneficiation studies on three deposits. Three diamond-drill holes totaling 562 feet were drilled on the E. M. Hughes property to determine subsurface continuity. Although outcrops as much as 30 feet wide were present on this property, the only nelsonite intersected in the holes ranged from 4 to 18 inches thick. The ilmenite content of the core ranged from 50 to 75 percent. These nelsonite deposits are of secondary importance as a source of titanium, being small, rarely exceeding 1,500 feet in length and 30 feet in width, but they are high grade. Due to the proximity of some of the bodies it might be possible to mine several of them as one operation feeding one mill. Electromagnetic separation on composited samples recovered 83.0 percent of the Tio as an ilmenite concentrate in 68.5 percent of the weight. Two flotation procedures were developed. The first method, using oleic acid as a collector and fluo silicic acid as an apatite depressant on deslimed feed, produced an overall recovery of 59.3 percent in batch tests. The second procedure eliminated desliming. Laurylamine hydrochloride removed silicates in an acid pulp followed by an alkaline apatite flotation with oleic acid as the collector and dextrine as the ilmenite depressant. The ilmenite-rich tailing represented a 66.2-percent recovery of Tio in the batch tests.

An equilibrium study of the system potassium carbonate, potassium bicarbonate, carbon dioxide, and water has been conducted with solutions of 20-, 30-, and 40-percent equivalent potassium carboaate concentrations. These equilibrium data cover the operating range of the hot carbonate scrubbing system for removing carbon dioxide from gas mixtures. Such data are necessary to establish the limits of purification and are used to design absorption and regeneration towers. Values of K in the relationship K = (KHCO3)2/(K2CO3)PCO2 were determined for higher temperatures of 70" to 140° C. and greater concentrations, I 20 to 40 percent, than employed by previous investigators. For the 20- and 30-percent concentrations, K is constant at a given temperature; thus, once K has been determined the equilibrium pressure of carbon dioxide can be calculated for any conversion. Variation of & values with changing conversion was observed with the 40-percent solutions, so that equilibrium calculated pressures are less reliable from average K values.

The heat content above 25.0° C up to 1,000° C was measured for six rock types: St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite, Holston Limestone, Sioux Quartzite, Rockville Quartz Monzonite, Salem Limestone, and the basalt at Dresser, Wis. The calorimetric data were obtained with an isothermal jacket-copper block calorimeter. The experimental heat content data for each rock type are presented, along with specific heat data obtained from the temperature derivative of the heat content. For the six rock types the maximum deviations of the specific heats at a given temperature were within 10 percent below 575° C and within 34 percent above 5750°C. The increase in the values of specific heat range from a minimum of 13 percent for the basalt at Dresser, Wis. (temperature range, 100° to 1,000° C) to a maximum of 46 percent for Holston Limestone (temperature range, 100° to 870° C).

Stimulated vertical boreholes are an effective means of removing gas from coalbeds in advance of mining. This Bureau of Mines report examines the coal mine roof damage potential of stimulation treatments. Twenty-two Government-sponsored stimulation treatments have been mined through to determine the effects on the coalbed and roof strata. Vertical fractures in the coalbed were discernible for most treatments and horizontal fractures were present for about half of the stimulations. Sand-propped vertical fractures were usually short in lateral extent. Evidence of stimulation fluid movement could generally be traced beyond the maximum extent of sand-filled fractures when fluorescent paint was added to the treatment fluids. The maximum lateral extent for a sand-filled vertical fracture was 416 ft and a paint-coated vertical fracture extended 630 ft. Horizontal fractures were generally found within bedding planes, most commonly on top of the coalbed. The maximum lateral extent for a horizontal fracture was 265 ft at a coalbed depth of 630 ft. Horizontal fractures have been found to occur as deep as 1,145 ft. Penetration of strata overlying coalbeds was observed in nearly half of the treatments intercepted. Most of these occurrences have been interpreted to be penetrations into preexisting joints. No roof falls or adverse mining conditions were encountered that could be attributed to the stimulations.

Combustion aerosols consist mainly of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC). Since EC strongly absorbs light and thus affects atmospheric visibility and radiation balance, there is great interest in its measurement. To this end, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) published a standard method to determine the mass of EC and OC on filter samples. Another common method of measuring carbon in aerosols is the aethalometer, which uses light extinction to measure "black carbon" or BC, which is considered to approximate EC. A third method sometimes used for estimating carbon in submicron combustion aerosols, is to measure particle size distributions using a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) and calculate mass using the assumptions that the particles are spherical, carbonaceous and of known density. With an eye toward evaluating the use of these methods for measuring carbon in freshly emitted diesel aerosols, the objective of this paper is to compare the results among these methods and to investigate the role of OC when measuring the mass concentration of elemental carbon (or black carbon) in aerosols emitted by a medium-duty Diesel engine. Results indicate that the aethalometer response correlates well with the data from filter samples (R2 = 0.99), with a very slight positive interference at high levels of OC.

Stability constants, that is, equilibrium constants for complex-formation reactions, have been determined by a titrimetric method for complexes formed by the transition metal ions Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, and Cd2+ with the structurally analogous bidentate ligands N-ethylethylenediamine and 2-(ethylthio)-ethylamine. The sulfur containing ligand was found to be the weaker of the two chelating agents for each of the four metals. Absorption spectra of the individual complexes have been determined in order to calculate their crystal field stabilization energies. The combined results suggest a linear relation between free energy of chelation and ionic radius of the metal ion.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation into the occurrence of outbursts of salt known to be responsible for explosions, fatalities, and damage in domal salt mines. The purpose of the investigation was to develop a basis for predicting these outbursts based on geologic and associated physical properties of salt. The investigation was conducted at the Cote Blanche salt mine in southern Louisiana. Because outbursts are the primary mode of methane emission into the mine, more than 80 outbursts, ranging in size from 1 to 50 ft in diameter have been mapped. These outbursts generally are aligned and elongate parallel to the direction of salt layering. More than 200 salt samples, both random and selected, were tested for methane content. It was found that outburst zones are well correlated with high methane content. Detailed mapping also revealed that the zones are well defined, with salt crystal size abruptly increasing upon entry into the zone. The intensity of folding and kinking of the salt layering within the outburst zone also appears to increase. An interbedded sand layer occurring throughout the mine does not appear to be a significant source of methane. However, fine-grained salt may be related to outburst occurrence.

Coal mining is more widely distributed throughout the United States than is generally known, as 30 States are credited with having coal mines. In 1919 twenty-three of these States each produced at least a million tons of bituminous coal, and all the States produced about 560,000,000 tons. In addition, Pennsylvania produced about 85,000,000 tons of anthracite. Twenty-eight States have regulations prepared by commissions or have enacted laws governing the operation of coal mines. Pennsyl¬vania has separate codes for the anthracite and bituminous fields. The codes may be classified as follows: Twelve distinctly coal¬mining codes; eight codes that are essentially coal mining, but also apply to other mines; five codes that are subdivided, referring partly to coal mines and partly to other mines; and four codes that are essentially metal mining, but apply in part or in whole to coal mining. The first State to have a coal-mining law was Pennsylvania, which enacted a law, for Schuylkill County only, in 1869. The first State to enact a coal-mining law governing all the coal mines in the State was Illinois in 1872, followed by Ohio in 1873. Pennsylvania in 1879 enacted a law for anthracite mines only, but did not enact similar laws for bituminous mines until 1577. At least 10 other States enacted coal-mining laws between the years 1870 and 1890. Before 1890 electricity was little used in coal-ruining operations and therefore practically no provisions governing the installation, inspection, or maintenance of electrical equipment were made in any of the laws enacted up to 1890. In the law of Colorado, approved April 8, 1885, there is a reference to the use of telephones, probably the first reference to electrical equipment of any kind in a State-mining code. Most of the mining codes have been changed from their original form by amendment or by complete revision. In some of the early changes a casual reference is made to the use of electricity or to the handling of electrical equipment. In 1911 Pennsylvania added
