A study was made of the United States Bureau of Mines' chlorine-oxygen leaching process for complex sulfide concentrates. The investigation sought to determine the kinetic order and IT mechanisms involved in the reactions betweens sphalerite, and galena with chlorine. The influence of copper on the extraction rates was also studied. It has been shown the rates of reaction of chlorine in aqueous solutions with sphalerite and galena are both zero order at 373K with the rate limiting step being the chemical reaction. Addition of cupric chloride increased the extractions of both lead and zinc.

The Bureau of Mines has developed several techniques for draining methane from coalbeds in advance of mining. Drilling long horizontal holes from an underground location is one such technique, which was successfully demonstrated in the Pittsburgh and Sunnyside Coalbeds. The same technique has now been applied in the Mary Lee Coal bed at Jim Walter Resources, Inc.'s No. 4 Mine, Brookwood, Ala., where two holes were drilled horizontally--one to a depth of 1,010 feet (308 m) and the other to 540 feet (165 m). The 1,010-foot (308-m) hole proved successful in degasifying a portion of the Mary Lee Coalbed. The hole drained methane for 1 year, during which time the initial gas flow of 200,000 ft3/d (5,663 m3/d) declined to 65,000 ft3/d (1,840 m3/d). Total gas production was 40 x 106 ft3 (1.1 x 106 m3). The gas was of commercial quality, with 98 pct methane and a heat rating of 990 Btu/ft3 (36.89 Mj/m3). The methane emissions from the faces of the mine section advancing into the degasified zone were reduced by 60 pet. The 540-foot (165-m) hole was terminated prematurely when it became impossible to maintain an open hole. Because of caving, very little gas was drained through this hole.

"Carbon dioxide has been used for extinguishing electrical fires of many kinds (1, 3, 4) 3/ and more recently has been applied to some extent in fighting coal-mine fires (5). This report is concerned with the possibility of an electric current being conducted from a live power source, such as a trolley wire, across the impinging spray of carbon dioxide gas, to a metallic discharge nozzle, and then being grounded through the body of the person holding or touching the container. Rose and. Skinner (5) have described a case in which a fall of roof coal had brought down the trolley without creating a dead shot. The current was conducted in part through the loose coal to the rail, causing ignition of the coal. The fire was successfully extinguished with carbon dioxide.Dielectric data on pure carbon dioxide gas and liquid have been reported by Quinn and Jones (2). For the gas, the dielectric constants range from 1.00971 (35°C., 10 atmospheres) to 1.3072 (70°C., 151 atmospheres); for the liquid, 1.6016 (0°C., 50 atmospheres). Compared with the dielectric constant of air (1.0006, 1 atmosphere), these data, indicate that carbon dioxide in both gaseous and liquid forms is a very poor conductor of electricity, of the same order as air. 4/"

"The Generic Mineral Technology Center on Respirable Dust was established in August 1983, at the request of the Bureau of Mines, to conduct research that affords ""...each miner the opportunity to work underground during the period of (his/her) adult working life without incurring any disability from pneumoconiosis or any other occupational disease"". The Center consists of the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institutes (MRI) of The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and West Virginia University (WVU) in association with the MRIs of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Minnesota (UMN). (FIGURE 34) Michigan Technological University (MTU) is also affiliated with the Center in the area of diesel particulates.The Center brings together experts concerned with particles causing potentially disabling or fatal diseases including pneumoconiosis (""black-lung""), silicosis, and asbestosis. The latter is of deep concern not just to workers in the mineral sector of the economy but also to the general populace. The primary goal of the Center is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through advancing fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling, and the interaction of dust and lungs. The research program of the Generic Mineral Technology Center explores these scientific, engineering or medical concerns with the objective of refining existing strategies and developing new respirable dust control techniquesand technology that are consistent with the fundamental dust-lung interaction processes that lead to mine worker disability. The U.S. Bureau of Mines tangentially impacted potential coal-cutter bit shank materials against sandstone to investigate the potential of the materials to ignite natural gas by a friction-generated hot streak. The shank material samples were mounted in a 24-in, 550-lb flywheel, which was rotated at surface speeds of 400 to 900 sfpm. The sandstone was advanced toward the rotating flywheel at feed rates of 1 mil per impact. The atmosphere mixture was 7 vol pet natural gas in air. Three grades of polycarbonate resin, an ultra-high-molecular weight polyethylene, and a zinc alloy (ZA27) were among the potential materials. None of these materials caused ignition of the methane at any of the three test speeds (400, 600, and 900 sfpm), but the above materials do not have sufficient strength to hold a carbide tip during coal cutting. Of the materials having sufficient strength to hold a carbide tip, three nickel-based alloys proved less likely to cause a natural gas ignition than did iron-based alloys such as 4340 (a commonly used shank material for coal cutters).

In 1985, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied a portion of the 110,000 acre Massacre Rim Wilderness Study Area (CA-020-1013). The area studied, containing 23,260 acres, is located in northwest Washoe County, Nevada, about 25 miles west of Vya adjoining the Charles Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge. Basalt caps older tuffaceous sedimentary rocks in an area that contains no claims or prospects. No mineral resources were identified during this investigation.

An accurate knowledge of the water content of oil-bearing sands4/ now is recognized as an important factor in calculations of the flow of oil through the sands to producing wells and in the estimation of oil reserves, To this end the Bureau of Mines laboratories are using a method that is an adaptation of the A. S. T. M. method of determining the water content of petroleum products (1).5/ However, the apparatus and technique have been altered slightly, as described in this report, to increase the precision of the method without affecting the simplicity of procedure or speed with which determinations may be made. Until recently petroleum engineers, when estimating reserves assumed that the entire pore volume of the oil-saturated parts of producing sands was filled with oil, as it was generally thought that the oil, water, and gas in any formation had separated completely during geologic time into distinct layers because of their difference in density. In 1929 Lindthrop and Nickolaeff (12) reported experimental results from which they concluded that 22 to 30 percent of the pore volume of producing sands in the Grozay district, Russia, was filled with water when the fields were discovered. Since that time numerous investigators (5, 7, 8, 10) have found evidence of water in the sands of now oil-producing fields and old fields that never produced water with the oil.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes a viewing transformation algorithm that generates a perspective view of a three-dimensional scene. This tool may be used by researchers to improve mine safety by assessing the visual capabilities of a mobile equipment operator. Three-dimensional transformations used to build the viewing transformation and techniques used to project the image onto a two-dimensional display screen are defined. The algorithm is written in the C-programming language and designed to stress portability, allowing it to work without significant modifications on numerous computers. A listing of the computer routines along with sample output is included in the report.

"INTRODUCTIONThis paper summarizes our recent investigations of the potential role of silicon-oxygen based free radical species in the biochemical mechanism of the lung injury caused by the inhalation of freshly fractured silica. The impetus for this study came from the following observations. Inhalation of crystalline silica is associated with the development of acute and chronic silicosis. Chronic silicosis is characterized by the development of sharply marked concentric fibrotic nodules in the lung. This occurs over a period of several decades with the development of progressive respiratory impairment. In contrast, acute silicosis is manifested by the filling of the alveoli with an amorphous lipoproteinaceous exudate within a short period after exposure, and rapid development of respiratory disability often leading to fatality. Most studies on the pathogenesis of silicosis have focused on the elucidation of cellular mechanisms of cell injury and the development of chronic silicosis. Because pulmonary responses to crystalline silica are distinctly different for · the acute and chronic silicosis, we hypothesized that the acute response is associated with some unique properties of ·freshly formed silica particle surfaces, due to the formation of some reactive chemical species caused by the rupturing or the silicon-oxygen bonds. In occupations involving drilling, tunneling and sandblasting operations acute silicosis can be correlated with this unique surface reactivity of silica. The formation or reactive species was demonstrated, using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy (Dalal et al., 1986; Fuibini et al., 1987; Hochstrasser and Antononi, 1972). Grinding of quartz crystals under ultra high vacuum (10-10 torr) leads to the formation of Si- and SiO• radicals and these radicals are quenched by exposure to air and other gases (Hochstrasser and Antonini, 1972). ESR signals have also been reported from micronized quartz samples that were evacuated at 413 K (Bolls et al., 1983). In order to find a more direct relationship of such radicals to acute silicosis, we made ESR measurements on quartz dusts freshly ground in ambient air and found- that indeed grinding under ambient environment leads to the formation of the Si• and SiO• type of radicals which decay on storing the dusts in air or in biological buffers (Dalai et al., 1986; Vallyathan et al., 1988). The Si• and SiO radical formation on grinding has also been reported by Fubini et al. (1987). In addition, we recently found that •OH radicals are generated in aqueous suspensions of freshly ground quartz (Dalai et al., 1988; Shi et al., 1988; Vallyathan et al., 1988). We have subsequently carried out detailed cytotoxicity and biological assays on freshly made as well as aged quartz dusts. As summarized below, the results provide new insight into the biochemical mechanism of acute silicosis."

In December's marketing of 99.5 percent aluminum ingot, domestic producer pricing remained at 53$ per pound, while dealer quoting rose from 47.5¢ to 48.5¢. BORON Domestic production of boron minerals and chemicals reached an all-time high in 1977--1.4 million short tons valued at $236 million. Combined sales of the three California producers topped the 1976 level by 15 percent in quantity and 28 percent in value, a consequence of healthy demand in the glass and insulation industries. Unprecedented demand for boric acid as a flame retardant for cellulosic insulation stimulated producers to utilize fully all available capacity, thereby achieving a record output of 158,000 tons. One company increased output from its existing boric acid facilities and initiated production at another plant that historically had produced only sodium borates. A second company achieved a previously planned 25 percent plant expansion.

The Bureau of Mines, in its investigations of respiratory apparatus for use in mines and allied industries; tests equipment that is voluntarily submitted by manufacturers in accordance with published schedules of tests. These tests are designed to insure that the equipment has the minimum requirements for safety in use. Approval certificates are issued for apperatus that meets the bureau's specifications, and the manufacturer is permitted to mark his equiment with a seal showing that it has been approved as "Permissible." A complete list of per- missible self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus, gas masks, and hose masks tested prior to January 1, 1930, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 62309. The present list includes all equipment tested and approved prior to July 1, 1930.

Improve the reliability and accuracy of subsurface images using constrained tomography with enhanced ray-tracing capabilities. Background Geophysical tomography is a technique for imaging the structure of a rock mass using seismic or radio waves, in the same way that medical CAT scans image human tissue using X-rays. Tomography has found numerous practical applications related to mining, including lithologic and structural characterization, fracture detection and fluid monitoring, void detection, and evaluation of stress state and integrity of mine structures. Problems Two fundamental problems have largely prevented geophysical tomography from enjoying the tremendous success achieved by medical tomography. The first is a consequence of practical limitations on the placement of sources and receivers of wave energy: ideal resolution can be attained only when the region being imaged is entirely surrounded by sources and receivers, so that it is crossed by rays traveling in all possible directions. When such coverage is impossible or impractical, the inversion becomes underdetermined: there id not enough information in the measured data to provide a mathematically unique solution. The second major problem in geophysical tomography is the necessity for detailed ray tracing. Commercial software, as well as previous U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) software, employs a ray-shooting algorithm that may be unable to model some ray paths when velocity contrasts are larger than about 100%. These ?shadow zones" result in loss of data and degradation of reconstructed images.

Three -dimensional boundary value problems are difficult to solve. Indeed, while the separation of the scalar wave equation can be effected in 11 different coordinate systems, an analytic solution requires that the boundaries, both external and internal, possess the same symmetry as the coordinate system. Numerical methods are thus of great importance for the solution of such problems; however, despite the availability of high-speed, large memory digital computers , the solution to a significant three -dimensional problem is by no means trivial. It is unfortunate that the results reported here by Jones are invalid. Jones discusses a model in which a three-dimensional island lies off a linear coastline where all the interfaces lie in the coordinate planes in a Cartesian system. A downward plane em wave polarized with the electric field parallel to the linear coastline, and two of the islands coast, is incident downward. This, of course, requires that the incident electric field is perpendicular to the other faces of the idealized Cartesian island. The significant equation used by Jones for his finite difference calculations is [ ] where n2 = sµ? . is the conductivity, µ=µo is the permeability of the appropriate medium, and w is the angular frequency of a Fourier component of the incident field. We see that the displacement current term is omitted, which is an excellent approximation for the parameters of interest in this model. In the similar equation for the y- component of the diffusion equation, the same considerations which we are about to discuss are equally valid. It can be seen from the equation that the field components are related and thus any errors introduced will be propagated into all three components. Health surveillance efforts indicate that the development of lung disease and overexposure to respirable dust in underground coal mires continues to afflict mine worker. Results from the most recent round (1992 - 1996) of the Coal Worker's X-ray Surveillance Programs indicate that approximately 8% of the examined miners who had at least 25 years of mining experience were diagnosed with Coal Worker Pneumoconiosis (CWP) (category 1/0+). During the period between 1995-1999, mine operators and MSHA inspectors collected 9968 and 1365 dust samples respectively, from longwall designated occupation (DO) personnel. Analysis of these samples showed that 1970 (20%) of the mine operator samples and 25.8 (19%) of the MSHA samples5 exceeded the 2 mg/m3 dust standard. The continued development of CWP in coal mine workers and the magnitude of respirable dust over-exposures in longwall mining occupations illustrate the need for improved dust control technology on longwalls. Figure 1 illustrates the major longwall dust sources as determined in the early 1990's.4 This article describes the ongoing research to find ways to minimise shearer dust levels as a function of changes in dust control parameters, and research to determine the impact of high air velocities on shield dust entrainment.

In 1986, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 7,940-acre Southern Otay Mountain Wilderness Study Area (CA-060-029), and the 5,750-acre Western Otay Mountain Wilderness Study Area (CA-060-028) in order to evaluate their mineral resources. The wilderness study areas are located in San Diego County, CA, about 20 miles southeast of San Diego. No mineral resources were identified in the Southern or Western Otay Mountain Wilderness Study Areas, based on literature, field observations, and sample results. The wilderness study areas are underlain by a complex blend of Late Jurassic, moderately metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Evidence of mineralization is not obvious.

As part of its objective to expand the body of mineral information as a basis for new technology, the Bureau of Mines conducted research on the fundamental behavior exhibited by phosphate clay waste in settling ponds. A semiempirical equation used to describe the compaction of ceramic powders in a single-acting die was applied to aqueous phosphatic clay waste and attapulgite slurries. This equation, [*V = a1 e ?k1/P + a2e ? k2/P] was found to describe the compaction of an attapulgite gel and a phosphate slime gel by a moving screen. [*V] is the ratio of the compaction achieved at a given pressure, P, to the compaction achieved at a pres-sure sufficient to remove all space between particles. The constant al represents the fraction of compaction achieved at low pressure by rearrangement of floes to higher packing density, and a2 represents the fraction of compaction achieved at higher pressure resulting from removal of voids within floes. K1 and K2 are constants determined from the experimental data. Both the low-pressure and high-pressure compaction mechanisms were observed in the compaction of the clays. These two compaction mechanisms offer an explanation for the observation that impounded slimes initially dewater rapidly and then dewater at a much slower rate.

All bituminous-coal mines, by the nature of their product and inherent gassy tendencies, are subject to explosions or mine fires. The evolution from large, hand-loading sections employing numerous men and containing open-type equipment, lights, and nonpermissible explosives to small, concentrated mechanical sections with but few well-supervised men utilizing modern preventive equipment has not altered this premise. Mine catastrophes such as Centralia and New Orient No. 2, as well as recent disasters of less magnitude, have refuted the trend of thinking that modern equipment, will prevent or localize explosions and prevent widespread or loss of life.

"INTRODUCTION A soluble mediator has been described which is released from activated rabbit leukocytes and induces histamine secretion from rabbit platelets (Barbaro and Zvaifler, 1966; Siraganian and Osler, 1971). This factor has been isolated, characterized and named platelet activating factor, PAF (Bcnveniste et. al., 1972). PAF has since been chemically identified as l-0-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glyceryl-3-phosphocholine (Benveniste et. al., 1979; Demopoulous et. al., 1979).PAF is a lipid mediator of broad biological activity. It causes smooth muscle contraction, contraction of lung tissue and decreased FEV 1; while enhancing capillary permeability thus causing edema (Pinkard, 1983). In addition, PAF is a chemoattractant and can lead to inflammation.PAF has been reported to stimulate the release of lysosomal enzymes, leukotriene B,, and lipid metabolites from neutrophils (Smith et. al., 1983; Shaw et. al., 1981; Lin et. al., 1982; O'Flaherty et. al., 1984). The objective of the present investigation was to further characterize PAP-induced stimulation of granulocytes and to develop a bioassay, i.e. chemiluminescence, for screening PAF receptor antagonists and inhibitors of PAP-induced activation of granulocytes. The possible use of the chemiluminescence assay to monitor PAF synthesis by human granulocytes is also described.METHODSBlood was drawn from healthy volunteers into a blood storage bag containing CPD anticoagulant. Granulocytes were partially purified by dextran sedimentation and further purified by centrifugal elutriation as described previously (Jones et. al., 1980). Granulocytes obtained by this procedure were approximately 95 percent pure. The number of granulocytes in this preparation was determined using an electronic cell counter (Coulter Model Z1, Coulter Instrument Co., Hialeah, FL). Isolated granulocytes were used to monitor membrane potential, hydrogen peroxide and superoxide release, oxygen consumption, calcium uptake and, in some cases, chemiluminescence. Studies of PAF receptor antagonists were conducted using neutrophils isolated by density centrifugation. Briefly, blood was layered onto Mono-Poly-Resolving Medium (Flow Laboratories, McLean, VA) and centrifuged at 22 °C and 300 g for 30 min. Neutrophils collected from the second band of this gradient were at least 90 percent pure."

In this Bureau of Mines investigation, the electrochemical polarization behavior of Fe and Fe-1BCr has been characterized in rigorously controlled 1[N] H2S04 solutions stirred with oxygen or an inert gas. Samples that under-went various levels of corrosion or passivation were examined using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and ion sputtering. Passivation of iron occurred at a potential of approximately 0.6 volt (1) in poorly stirred, oxygen-saturated solutions for forward polarization (scanning from cathodic to anodic potentials); (2) in pH-adjusted (increased), well-stirred, oxygen-saturated solutions for forward polarization; and (3) in well~ and poorly stirred, oxygen-and helium-saturated solutions for reverse polarization. Passivation of Fe-18Cr occurred at a potential of approximately -0.1 volt in helium-, nitrogen-, and oxygen-saturated solutions for all cases of forward polarization and most cases of reverse polarization. Elemental depth profiles obtained from AES sputtering measurements indicated that films or adsorbed species were present on iron samples in solution subjected to open-circuit, active, and transpassive corrosion, cathodic reduction, and passivation. This conclusion was reached by considering the distribution of the solution species, primarily sulfur, in the films, which were composed primarily of iron and oxygen. Sulfur was present throughout the films on actively corroding samples, in the outer regions of films of passive and transpassive samples, and on the film surfaces of open-circuit and cathodically reduced samples. For Fe-18Cr, sulfur was found on the surfaces of films on passive samples only, indicating that only the passive samples had films on their surfaces in solution. The films on electropolished and passive Fe-1BCr samples had the largest chromium concentrations, estimated to be approximately 45 at. pct, with less chromium in films of cathodically reduced, active, and open-circuit samples, in that order.
