This paper presents only the highlights of previous research on the paleobotany of coal. The accumulated material has become so vast that a comprehensive review of all findings relating to paleobotany would be far too long. The fact that coal is derived from plants is now so well-known that no further comment is required, but knowledge of the mode of transformation of plant substances into coal is not so general. The plant matter goes first through processes of semirottins-, maceration, and elimination of certain material to form peat, which is then further transformed into coal. The first stage has been termed the "biochemical process," because the more important changes take place under the influence of micro-organisms. Near the end of the biochemical action an unconsolidated peat is formed. The second or "dynamochemical process," caused by the addition of superincumbent rock strata such as sandstones and shales and application of additional pressure and possibly heat through mountain-building forces, results in the formation of higher-rank coals ranging from brown coal to anthracite. These stages in trans-formation of plant material to coal have been described in previous reports.4 The main object of this paper is to bring to the notice of paleobotanists the fact that coal contains an enormous amount of material in a remarkably good state of preservation. Although some of the coal-forming matter has lost its identity, much of the original structure is retained. A large proportion of the coal, therefore, particularly of common bright coals, comprises constituents or components that invariably have retained some of the original plant structure, and many of these structures may be assigned to certain plants. The identity of these plants and of the remains forms the subject of this paper.

The separation of enormous quantities of water produced with the oil in some West Texas fields necessitated the use of special equipment other than the regular lease tanks. Several methods were used with varying degrees of success. They include the water-trap, hay tank and gun barrel, gun barrel and settling tank, chemical and electrical-dehydration methods. The water trap which has been used extensively in the Hendricks field, and in some instances has been installed in the Yates field separates the water and. oil under high pressure before tile liquid and gas pass through the flow beam. The first trap was constructed and installed by the Southern Crude Oil Purchasing Co. in July, 1928. By July, 1929, approximately 300 traps were in use. Treating cut oil by running it through a hay tank was done quite extensively in the Roberts-Settles field, Howard and Glasscock Counties, Tex., and later the method was used in the Hendricks field. In July, 1931, there were 37 hay tanks in the Roberts-Settles field, treating the oil from 123 wells. The cut oil frequently was made acceptable to the pipe-line company by running it through the hay tank. In some instances, however, it was necessary to heat the oil, and occasionally both heat and chemicals were used before complete separation of the oil and water was obtained.

The Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with phosphate companies in the Florida land-pebble area, made a comprehensive study of the waste clays, or "phosphate slimes," produced in the mining of phosphate rock in Florida. These slimes represent a significant ecological problem and a major deterrent to effective land recovery in the phosphate-mining areas. Physical, chemical, and mineralogical studies were made of slime samples submitted by 15 of the 16 plants in Florida in an effort to identify factors that prevent successful consolidation of the slimes and subsequent recovery of the mined lands. Results of these studies indicated that the clay mineral attapulgite, a hydrated magnesium silicate, was primarily responsible for the very poor settling characteristics of the slimes, and that the quantity of attapulgite in the slimes effectively controlled the settling rate, pulp density of terminal solids, viscosity, percent solids of filter cake, and flocculant requirements.

(B) Selected injury data: 1. Tables 19 to 45: Contain current data on various selected factors of operating and physical conditions that have contributed to the occurrence of injuries at bituminous-coal mines and at Pennsylvania anthracite mines. These factors include extent of hand and machine loading, size of mine by employment and production groups, thickness of bed or vein, duration and number of work shifts, rating of mine as gassy, or nongassy, types of cap lamps, ventilation, explosives, and combinations of factors that influence mine safety. (C) Injury experience by States: 1. Tables 46 to 52: Contain current data on number of injuries, frequency and severity rates, average severity, major classification of injuries, injury records of all coal-producing States, and the relative standing by States according to injury-frequency rates. Changes in existing airway and fan-installation conditions offer the most common opportunities for effecting economical operation of mine ventilating systems, but the largest possibilities for securing this result lie in the original design of the main airways for efficient service. Formulas, and. charts for their graphical solution, are presented herewith for the determination of the elements of airways design when the conditions of service are known, or may be roughly approximated. Although the analyses are made with particular reference to metal-mine airways, there is no essential difference between metal and coal mine main airways, and the methods presented are equally applicable to both. Little attention is paid to designing airways for maximum economy in the ventilation of metal mines. Most of the openings used as main airways are originally designed and used for transportation and other operating purposes. Even where openings are made primarily for ventilation, the possibility of their future use for other operating purposes, or even custom alone, usually results in the selection of a size and shape similar to those of existing openings. Natural conditions, such as heavy ground, often seriously limit the size of opening that can be maintained without excessive expense; and various operating factors, such as velocity limitations on traveling roads, often dictate size requirements in excess of those required for economy in ventilation only. In metal mines the main airways are, as a rule, too small rather than too large for economic service, with the general result that the quantities in circulation are often less than the mine's proper requirements over long periods, even though excessive amounts of power are applied in an effort to remedy conditions.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a state-of-the-art study of techniques currently employed to close large openings in underground mines. A large opening was considered to be any opening over 10 feet high and having a cross section of at least 200 square feet. Five salt mines and one limestone mine were visited to observe various methods of sealing large openings. Because of the variations in conditions from mine to mine, no definite conclusions could be drawn as to which is the best method. In mines where waste material is available, stoppings built by piling waste material are efficient and economical. Where waste material is not available properly constructed brattice cloth stoppings are superior to those built from wood, concrete block, or urethane foams.

This report describes the design, construction, and operation of a low temperature adiabatic calorimeter for measuring heat capacities of solids or liquids from 60° to 300° K. A brief discussion of the basic theory involved in chemical thermodynamics and the problems involved in obtaining accurate experimental data is presented. The operation of the calorimeter was tested by measuring the heat capacity of a sample of benzoic acid obtained from the National Bureau of Standards over a temperature range of 60° to 300° K. The measured heat capacity values of the benzoic acid compared favorably with similar values obtained by the Bureau of Standards, the maximum deviation being 0.5 percent. THEORY A brief discussion of the basic theory involved in chemical thermodynamics will illustrate the applications of heat capacity data and the problems involved in obtaining accurate experimental data.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and Michigan Technological University (MTU) are collaborating to develop an apparatus for measuring diesel tailpipe emissions in underground mines. A tailpipe emissions measurement apparatus (EMA) is described that dilutes diesel exhaust and measures the concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), CO, CO2, NO, and NO2 at known dilution ratios. The EMA was evaluated by side-by-side comparison of its measurements with those by laboratory-grade instruments. Concentrations of CO and CO2 measured by the EMA were usually within ± 14 pct of concentrations measured by laboratory-grade instruments for CO and ±20 pct for CO2. EMA¬ measured DPM concentrations were, on average, 29 pct lower than those measured by laboratory-grade instruments, with the differences being fairly consistent. The CO and CO2 differences are related to the method of calculating the EMA's dilution ratio, and the difference in DPM concentrations is attributed to thermophoretic and/or condensation losses related to the EMA's unheated sample probe. Preliminary analysis of data obtained with a heated sampling probe and modifications in the sampling procedures have indicated reduced variability in DPM and in the calculated dilution ratios.

A technique was devised for measuring the rate of chemical reactions between reactive metals and molten-salt mixtures at high temperatures. The rate of the heterogeneous reaction between high-purity titanium metal and titanium trichloride in molten sodium chloride was determined. The reaction is surface-controlled, and the heat of activation is 8.29 kilocalories per mole TiC13. An active site or reaction nuclei is created by adsorbing a TiC13 molecule at the metal surface. Reaction of the second TiC13 species forms an activated complex that decomposes into three TiC12 molecules.

"N-acetyl-beta(B)-D-glucosaminidase is a N-acetyl-beta((B)-D-glucosaminidase enzyme se¬creted by alveolar macrophages in response to phagocytosis of particulate material. Alveolar macrophages participate in the degradation and fibrosis of pulmonary tissue that results in pneumoconiosis. Known quantities of four characterized respirable dusts were bronchoscopically placed into the right caudal lung lobe of macaque monkeys. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples were collected from dust-exposed right lung and unexposed left lung of the same individuals at 2-week intervals for 12 weeks after dust instillation. The samples were tested for N-acetyl-B-D-glucosaminidase activity to determine if the enzyme levels could serve as an indicator of pulmonary injury induced by generic coal dusts when compared to known fibrogenic and nuisance dusts. Installation of generic quartz, anthracite, or TiO2 dusts produced significant elevations of enzyme activity and increased numbers of macrophages in the dust-exposed lobes. Elevations in enzymatic activity and macrophage numbers were greatest in response to generic quartz dust. These results suggest that quantitative levels of N-acetyl-B-D-glucosaminidase activity may be a useful indicator of acute and chronic lung injury following exposure to fibrogenic and nonfibrogenic dusts.IntroductionCoal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) is an occupational pulmonary disease associated with the inhalation of coal mine dust. An important external factor in the development of CWP is the composition of the respirable coal mine dust. A cause-and-effect relationship exists between coal mine dust and CWP, but it has not been shown that exposure to generic coal dusts will cause CWP [12]. Numerous immunological, biochemical, and cellular changes occur in CWP; however, in this study, only N-acetyl-beta(B)-D-glucosaminidase (NAGase), protein, and alveolar macrophages (AM) will be examined [7, 32, 33]."

The necessity for measuring radiation dose is encountered in studying both the beneficial and damaging effects of ionizing radiation on materials . It is also necessary to know the radiation dose absorbed by the reactants in order to evaluate the efficiency of reactions or processes that are promoted by radiation . Thus , a significant effort was made at the Albany cobalt 60 facility to investigate techniques by which the exposure radiation dose can be determined . Methods including ferrous sulfate , ceric sulfate , and methyl methacrylate chemical dosimeters , ion chamber dosimetry , and an absolute radiation calorimeter were investigated . Isodose curves were constructed for several standard source configurations using the dosimetry techniques which were investigated .

Mining did not contribute significantly to the economy of Benin, a small country on the coast of West Africa, during 1978-79. During these years, Benin continued to be rated by the United Nations as one of the 25 least developed countries in the world; its gross domestic product was under $200 3 per person per year. Salt from seawater, sand and gravel, bricks, and imported clinker for cement were the only minerals which contributed to the economy. Minerals were not expected to play an important role in the commercial sector of Benin's economy during the next decade. Joint projects included infrastructure development to create a coordinated road and rail system between Niger and Benin that was begun in 1960 as ?Operation Hirondelle." In 1976, an agreement for the construction of a rail link from Niamey, Niger, to Parakou was signed. At Parakou, the rail line would join the existing line to the port at Cotonou. Construction of the rail line was expected to take 6 years, and the cost was estimated at $287 million in 1979. During late 1979, the Federal Republic of Germany granted Benin a loan of $12 million for reconstruction of the port at Porto Novo. Benin and Nigeria were discussing a joint adventure in crude salt exploitation.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the kinetics of reduction of wustite and magnetite with carbon monoxide. A mechanism was postulated wherein the interaction between gaseous and absorbed carbon monoxide appears to be the rate-determining process. This mechanism fully accounts for the experimental rate equation JL.h relates th velocity of reduction to the pressure of the reducing gas at constant temperature. It also explains the variability of the heat of activation of the reduction process with the state of aggregation of the oxide material. The integrated rate equation is in perfect agreement with the experimental reduction-time curves.

The Bureau of Mines examined the wellbore of a vertical gas drainage well in the Mary Lee coalbed to determine the results of specific completion procedures in coal. A jet-slotting tool was used to cut four vertical slots through the casing about 1 ft below the coalbed. Even though stimulation treatment pressure was excessive, hydraulically induced channels were contained entirely within the target coal zone. Sand-filled, induced channels were horizontal, inclined, and vertical, and were propagated in directions similar to bedding planes, rock joint, and coal cleat directions measured in the mine. Variable gas flow rates, recorded during the productive life of the well, were attributed to chronic downhole pump malfunction and the slotted casing below the production zone.

The Bureau of Mines studied the effect of temperature upon the reduction of chromite by carbon and the relative reducibility of chromites as a function of their composition. Ferric oxide was also studied to provide comparative data. Pellets weighing approximately 1 gram and containing 70 percent ferric oxide, chromic oxide, or chromite and 30 percent graphite were subjected to closely controlled temperatures under a flow of argon for 15 minutes. The amount of CO and CO2 evolved was measured, and the reduced sample was analyzed by X-ray diffraction techniques. The reduction of Fe2O3 was studied over a temperature range of 600° to 1,400° C, while the reduction of Cr2O5 and chromite was conducted from 9000 to 1,621° C. The temperature above which appreciable reduction of Cr203 by graphite took place was 1,125° C. The temperature at which significant reduction started for three of the four chromite samples was approximately the same, indicating that there was concurrent reduction of iron and chromium oxides in the chromite mineral rather than selective reduction of iron oxides followed by reduction of chromic oxide. Rhodesian chromite appeared to dissociate at a lower temperature with concurrent reduction of iron. Based on the temperature at Which chromite was 50 percent reduced in 15 minutes, Transvaal chromite reduced most easily, followed by Mouat, then by Kampersian, and finally by Rhodesian DFC material. Statistical analysis of test results indicated that the ferric iron content of chromites affects their reduction behavior more than any other constituent.

Objective Develop a method to warn of hazardous conditions and enhance safety during operation and inspection of vertical mine shafts and hoists. Background Mine hoisting is the most critical and potentially the most dan¬gerous operation in underground mining. Many hazards are related to falls of miners and materials, ground instability, and malfunction or lack of safety devices. All have the potential to cause a cata¬strophic accident. A condition known as "slack rope" is particularly dangerous, expecially if it occurs without the operator's awareness. The most common occurrence of slack rope is in metal or nonmetal mines that have a history of ground control problems near the "haft. Approach Studies of hoist safety features and Mine Safely a and Heath Administration (MSHA) accident statistics suggests a need to measure wire rope tension, conveyance speed and position, and shaft guide misalignment. The most accurate data are obtained directly from the conveyance. Such data could warn of potentially dangerous situations during hoisting operations, as well as during inspections, maintenance, and lowering of large equipment. Figure I shows the concept for monitoring wire rope tension, conveyance position, and guide displacement. Progress to Date A conveyance-mounted system has been developed that monitors rope tension: hoist conveyance position, speed, and load; and shaft guide misalignment. A "flex-beam" load sensor mounted just above the- conveyance protects against slack and tight rope. The measurements are transmitted 60 times a second via wireless equipment from the conveyance to the hoist room. An encoder mounted on the conveyance eliminates the need to correct the position because of rope stretch. Figure 2 shows the encoder wheel and guide displacement sensors being mounted on a cage in¬spection deck. A potentiometer monitors misalignment of the shaft guides during inspections. Information about the cage or skip can be acquired by the shaft inspector using a hand-held indicator. Inspection can also he conducted remotely from a station or hoist room using the wireless link to a laptop computer. Figure 3 shows test results from a simulated slack rope condition. Patent Status NIOSH has a patent pending on this device entitled "Cable-Load¬Sensing Device."
