Sodium-aluminum and potassium-aluminum silicates are among the more important rock-forming minerals of the earth's crust. They also appear as constituents of some metallurgical slags and of some refractory materials. Consequently, knowledge of their thermodynamic properties is interesting and valuable from several viewpoints. This paper reports experimental determinations of the low-temperature heat capacities and entropies at 298.16° K. of albite, jadeite, and nephelite it the sodium-aluminum silicate series and of adularia, ferriferous orthoclase, leucite and kaliophilite in the potassium-aluminum silicate series. Also high-temperature heat-content and entropy increments about 298.16° K. are reported for albite, jadeite, nephelite, and carnegieite in the sodium-aluminum silicate series. Except for a few high-temperature heat-content values for albite, all these data are available for the first time.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 390 natural gas samples from 22 States and five foreign countries. Of this total, 385 samples were collected during calendar year 1969. The remaining five analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the results were not received until 1969. All samples were collected as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Eleven previous publications have presented the results of 8,660 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity prior to 1969. The U. S. Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to determine the cause of the deterioration of Portland cement during storage and transportation , and to discover a means of preventing it . All available printed sources of information on this subject have been examined and a bibliography has been compiled . The subject has also been discussed with the leaders in the cement industry ; the present report is the result of their cooperation , and is based principally on information thus obtained . Deterioration of Portland cement during storage over any considerable period of time has long been noted ; closely related to it is deterioration of cement during transportation, which involves not only the time factor of storage but also exposure to varied climatic conditions . Deterioration in both cases is due to hydration of the cement by absorption of moisture from a humid atmosphere , or by exposure to actual rain-fall . After hydration cement possesses no cohesive power ; the degree of deterioration is directly proportional to the degree of hydration . The amount of deterioration of Portland cement during storage has been accurately determined in an investigation by the Structural Materials Research Laboratory , in cooperation with the Portland Cement Association . Cement stored in a shed in cloth sacks retained 80 per cent of its original strength after three months storage ; 71 per cent after six months ; 61 per cent after one year ; and 40 per cent after two years . The deterioration of Portland cement during storage and transportation was noted particularly in France during the World War . Information concerning cement used by the American Expeditionary Forces was furnished by Lt. Col. H. S. Spackman and Major E. C. Eckel , U. S. R. , who had charge of practically all matters concerning cement used by the A. E. F. The cement used by the A. E. F. came from the following sources : 42,000 tons was French , Swiss , and Spanish cements ; 120,000 tons was English cement ; 55,000 tons made in plants operated by the A.E.F .; 500 tons ( Not over) from America . Deterioration was most marked in cement from the first source .

The Federal Bureau of Mines participated with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Martin Marietta Aerospace in developing, building, and testing a portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer for use as an analyzer in mineral-resource investigative work. The prototype battery-powered spectrometer, measuring I1 by 12 by 5 inches and weighing only about 15 pounds, was designed specifically for field use. The spectrometer has two gas-proportional counters and two radioactive sources, 109Cd and 55Fe. Preliminary field and laboratory tests on rock specimens and rock pulps have demonstrated the capability of the spectrometer to detect 33 elements, to date. Characteristics of the system present some limitations, however, and further improvements are recommended.

In the U.S. coal mining industry, a large cohort of miners is at or nearing retirement age. As these miners retire, there will be a need to hire and train thousands of new and most likely younger workers. Moreover, a large portion of safety trainers will also require replacement due to retirement. In a speech before the U.S. House of Representatives (2004), Bruce Watzman, Vice President for Safety, Health and Human Resources for the National Mining Association said, “[W]e will need to replace a major portion, approximately 50%, of the underground coal mining workforce within the next 5–7 years.” The large influx of new mine workers, along with the deficit in safety trainers, creates the challenge to provide consistent and effective safety training. Given the expected high turnover of the mining workforce, it is very likely that incoming workers will have much less experience than those leaving the workforce. Unfortunately, inexperienced miners have been shown to incur the highest rate of injuries. The piece of machinery most associated with these injuries is the roof bolting machine, which accounts for 56% of machinery-related injuries in underground coal mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has released a new report entitled “Roof Bolting Machine Operators Skills Training for a Walk-Thru Roof Bolter: Trainer’s Guide” (IC 9489). It is designed to help safety trainers develop struc-tured training for new operators of walk-thru bolting machines. This resource will help trainees learn, understand, and apply knowledge and skills. Included in the trainer’s guide are the following tools: [ ] a six-part DVD video series, a skills check survey, talking points, and a complete job training analysis. Also included is an exercise to help trainees learn more about their mine’s roof control plan, as well as a list of supplemental training and reading materials. On-site trainers can modify this guide to fit their particular mine conditions, machines and equipment, and work procedures. The goal of every coal mine safety professional is to increase safety awareness and make mines a safer place to work. The Walk-Thru Bolting Machine Trainer’s Guide will help teach new miners skills to create a safer working environment that will ultimately prevent or reduce on-the-job injuries. Safety trainers can also use the ideas and concepts from this guide to develop their own training skills for the safe operation of other pieces of underground coal mining equipment.

This report gives the result of investigations of coals of different rank, coal com¬ponents, chemically and thermally treated and irradiated coals, and sedimented organic matter. In most studies the arbitrary parameters obtained from the usual quantitative profile analyses are not given largely because they lack physical meaning. Instead comp interpretations are offered. X-ray patterns of high-volatile bituminous and lower rank coals are not self¬-sufficient for structural interpretation by the methods of analysis developed to date. The patterns of hydrogenated and dehydrogenated coals indicate that the basic change in the structure of bituminous coals with increase in rank is the conversion of alicyclic structures into aromatic layers. In low-rank anthracites the aromatic layers are about 10 A in size. The increase in rank is the result of coalescence of layers. High-rank anthracites have layer sizes of 25 to 40 A and exhibit the development of three-dimensional (hkl) reflections of graphite, indicating ordering of adjacent layers. In meta-anthracites the layers are > 1000 A and the basic structure is that of defective crystalline graphite. The well-known petrographic components in low-rank coals have different structures; the differences dissappear in low-volatile bituminous and higher rank coals. The patterns of sedimented organic matter, except impsonites, differ from those of coal hydrogen contents are high, and their X-ray patterns are consistent with those of structures. In contrast to normal coals, the patterns of uranium-bearing coals show increased diffuseness with decrease in hydrogen content. The diffuseness is accompanied by increase in the uranium content of the coal. It is very likely that high uranium-bearing coals have predominantly tetrahedral structures.

This is the second of a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels made pursuant to a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data oil motor gasolines sold during the minter of 1935-36.3/ These gasoline surveys report results of inspections, in oil-company laboratories, of samples of gasoline obtained by representatives of oil companies from service-station pumps in marketing areas throughout the country. In the present survey are presented inspection data on 239 samples of regular- price gasoline, 166 samples of premium-price gasoline, and 157 samples of third-grade gasoline, a total of 562 samples collected during the summer of 1936.

A prediction for oil recovery from a pilot waterflood in the Kane oil- field, located in Elk, Forest, and McKean Counties, Pa., was made and compared to actual field performance. Water-injection and production histories, well logs, other field data, and results from laboratory tests of core material were used in this analysis. Performance of the pilot waterflood, initiated in January 1963, was predicted using a modified Craig, Geffen, and Morse calculation technique. Maximum recovery from this low permeable, preferentially oil-wet formation was predicted to be about 22,500 barrels of oil after 300,000 barrels of water had been injected into the pilot waterflood area. After additional field data were collected it became necessary to reevaluate the pilot waterflood area. The gas saturation prior to the waterflood was estimated to have been 20 percent, based on an assumption regarding the required volume of water injected to initiate oil production. In view of the actual field performance, a gas saturation of 13 percent is indicated. When this gas saturation and the method originally proposed by Craig and others are used) the predicted results are more representative. In December 1965, field performance was further analyzed using a hyperbolic-decline curve as presented by Arps. Based upon this evaluation method, the pilot water flood in the Kane sand should produce 37,000 to 42,000 barrels of oil with the injection of 300,000 barrels of water into the pattern. By continuing this secondary-recovery project to a reasonable economic limit, ultimate oil recovery may be as much as 50,000 to 55,000 barrels, or 129 to 142 barrels per acre-foot from 36.5 acres.

A new record in accident prevention was made by the metal-mining a industry of the United States in 1938, as signalized by a lower fatality rate than in any previous year. The rate was less than half as high as in 1911, the earliest year for which figures are available. A good safety record was also established in the prevention of nonfatal injuries, as the injury rate was lower than in any other years except 1931 to 1935, a 5-year period notable for its unusually low injury rates. Employment was more limited in 1938 than in 1937, both in number of men employed and total number of man-hours worked. The number of workdays per man also was smaller than in 1937. Operating companies reported that 7,233 mines were active in 1938 or some part of the year and that the total number of men employed was 103,027. This figure represents the summation of the average number of men employed as reported by the companies, the average for each mine being that for the period during which the mine was active. The number of employees at all mines in 1938 was 15,402 less than in 1937. Reports covering all mines indicated a total of 188 million man-hours worked during the year, or 21 percent less than the nearly 240 million man-hours worked in 1937. In the performance of this work accidents occurred that resulted in the death of 156 employees and the injury of 1.2,722, each injured employee being disabled for more than the remainder of the clay on which he was hurt.. The fatality rate for 1938 was 0.83 per million man-hours worked, which was 9 percent more favorable than the rate of 0.91 for 1937. Nonfatal injuries occurred at the rate of 67.61 per million man-hours worked, an improvement of 10 percent compared with the injury rate of 75.37 for 1937.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Com¬mittee of the Coordinating Research Council (CFC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further re¬ports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of l941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. The present report presents analytical data for 3,011 samples, representing the products of 113 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during July and August 1946. As in previous surveys the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 1,585 samples, 311 items, and 99 -brands; premium-price, 1,422 samples, 280 items, and 94 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. A procedure was developed for the separation of lead and sulfur in industrial concentrates of galena by a combination of chlorination and fused - salt electrolysis . Galena could not be satisfactorily electrolyzed in the various media tried ; however , when it was treated with chlorine the resulting lead chloride could be effectively separated electrically into lead and chlorine . An apparatus was designed and constructed to chlorinate galena and to volatilize simultaneously most of the chloridized impurities . By electrolyzing the chlorinated concentrate , a high percentage of lead was recovered . Anodic chlorine was drawn from the cell and was used to chlorinate new feed . In many runs , the recovered metal analyzed from 99.8 to 99.9 percent lead . Lead was also distributed as a chloride in the bath , and a small portion was in the volatile fraction produced during the chlorination step . During a tinuous operation , only 0.1 percent of the total lead was discarded ; 99.9 percent was accounted for in the metal , electrolytic bath , and washed or leached chlorination condensate which was essentially lead chloride . About 95 percent of the sulfur from the galena was recovered as a byproduct of over 90 - percent grade .

It is with some diffidence that I venture to address the Montreal Section of the Society of Chemical industry on the subject of motor fuel from coal at a time when crude petroleum is produced in greater quantities than at any time in history, and at a time when the known reserves exceed all expectations, even the optimistic estimates of the Committee of Eleven of the American Petroleum Institute. Not only are new fields being discovered in America a -an embarrassing frequency but sources outside of the North American Continent show, unmistakable signs of adding materially to the world's sources of oil. Were it not for the tremendous scientific and technical importance of the work done in the past few years in transforming coal into liquid motor fuels, I should prefer to let this subject rest until a more propitious time, such as prevailed some years ago, when the gasoline consumption curve was rising rapidly and the production curve was slowing in its upward rise. That was the period which stimulated the researches which resulted in tetra ethyl lead and anti-knock gasolines on this side of the Atlantic and in methanol, synthetic gasoline and hydrogenation of coal on the other side. Some of you will recall a symposium on Motor Fuels and Oil Conservation held at the Chemists' Club n New York in September; 1925. Dr. R. L. Brown and I presented a paper at this meeting on "Complete Utilization of Coal and Motor, Fuel, in which we pointed out that coal was the most likely raw material source of gasoline substitutes if and when needed. Two important facts stand out as features of the metal- and nonmetal-mining4 industry of the United States in 1941 as compared with 1940: First, the number of employees and man-days of employment increased; second, accident-frequency rates, both fatal and nonfatal, decreased. Reports from mining companies to the Bureau of Mines covering underground, open-pit, and surface operations for 1941 re¬vealed the largest number of men employed since 1926 and the largest number of man-days worked since 1929. The combined fatal and non¬fatal accident-frequency rate for 1941, calculated on a basis of one mil¬lion man-hours of exposure to hazard, was (except for 1931 and 1932) the lowest since 1911, the earliest year for which figures are available. During this 31-year period, only 1938 and 1939 showed lower fatality rates, and only 1931 and 1932 had lower nonfatal-injury rates. Operating companies reported that 9,620 mines were active during all or some part of the year. These employed 125,290 men, an increase of more than 4 percent over 1940. The total volume of work performed at all mines, measured in terms of man-shifts, increased to nearly 32 million, a gain of 10 percent; man-hours of employment rose to almost 254 million, an increase of 10 percent over the 231 million man-hours worked in the previous year. The year's operations resulted in an average work-year of 255 days per man, an increase of 13 days per employee over the average working time in 1940. Although the 8-hour day prevails generally at most mines, the industry as a whole averaged 7.94 hours per shift, as in 1940.

Sheet mica is an important material in the manufacture of electronic and electrical equipment. Large quantities are consumed each year as an essential component in generators, transformers, radios, television sets, radar, electric lighting equipment, and electrical appliances. The nature, structural imperfections, and impurities determine to a great degree the usefulness of sheet mica. Proper processing and classification add greatly to its market value. This report is designed to assist producers in understanding the complexities of marketing muscovite sheet mica. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Special acknowledgment is due S. A. Owing to the growth of alloy steel production and its influence on tramp element levels when recycled, foundries have expressed concern regarding the quality of scrap used to prepare iron castings. Reliable and current information was unavailable on the amount of tramp elements contained in iron castings over time. Accordingly, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the American Foundrymen's Society (AFS), analyzed cast iron samples from participating foundries throughout the United States on a quarterly basis to ascertain possible trends. Each sample was analyzed for 28 elements to determine if changes had occurred as a function of several input variables. This bulletin describes the research and presents analytical results and evaluations over a 5-3/4-year period from January 1981 to September 1986. Results show that iron casting compositions are changing with respect to a few tramp elements such as arsenic, cobalt, chromium, tin, and zinc over the period. Changes in charge compositions probably are responsible. Significant variations between zones also were observed with aluminum, arsenic, cobalt, chromium, copper, and manganese.

"The velocity of detonation of an explosive is one of its most important properties, because its performance depends markedly on the rate at which it releases its energy. Fortunately, the velocity of detonation is one of the few properties of an explosive that can be measured precisely. However, the velocity of detonation of an explosive may depend on several factors other than its chemical composition, such as density, physical state, degree of confinement, nature of confinement, and magnitude of initiating impulse. Presumably for an explosive of fixed chemical and physical properties there are certain limiting conditions of confinement and initiation under which the explosive will detonate at a maximum constant and uniform velocity. This velocity is its ""ideal"" velocity of detonation. It is obvious, however, that in order to evaluate performance properties of an explosive in all of its applications it may be necessary to measure its velocity of detonation under a number of conditions in which the velocity of detonation is far from the maximum ""ideal"" velocity.. Under certain-conditions the velocity of detonation may even,be,different at different points in the explosive.It is .relatively simple to determine the velocity of detonation of an explosive under a. standard set of conditions if one is free to use large quantities of the explosive and to form it into a convenient shape. Under these circumstances; one can use a thin column of explosive a meter or more in length. The time required for an explosion to travel the length of the column will not be less,of the order a few ten-thousandths of a second and can be readily and accurately measured .by means of the standard spark chronograph or by photographing the explosion with a rotating-drum camera. However in many applications the explosive charge may be of relatively small dimensions arid may not be in a form convenient for making velocity measurements and often may be enclosed in a case or other confining medium. It may be necessary to determine the velocity of detonation over distances of the order of a few centimeters, in which case the time intervals to be measured will be extremely small. For example, the time required for an explosion to traverse 1 centimeter of tetryl is of the order of 1.5 microseconds.Since no satisfactory method of determining time intervals of the order of magnitude of a few microseconds within an explosive charge was available,, at least not for all conditions that might be encountered in practice, it was necessary to develop a special electronic chronoscope which is capable of measuring time intervals as small as a microsecond with a fair degree of accuracy. This report describes the chronoscope and its application to measurements of velocities of detonation in explosives."

Zwolle oil field of Sabine Parish, La., is different from most oil producing areas of the State in that the oil is obtained from marl and chalk-rock formations. The thickness of the reservoir rocks averages 500 feet; but production is not continuous throughout this thickness, as the oil apparently is localized in vertical and nearly vertical solution cavities and channelways or in porous zones of limited horizontal extent. The nature of the oil accumulation has caused two outstanding peculiarities of the field: (1) About 60 percent of the tests drilled were dry holes and (2) there were many instances of well interference. Commercial production was discovered in November 1928, after 17 years of prospecting in and around the present limits of the area now developed which has a length of about 22 miles and a maximum width of 4 miles. The field had produced 10,266,896 barrels of oil to January 1, 1934. The oil ranges in gravity from 400 to 420 A.P.I. Although the field is divided into several districts which are more or less clearly defined and separated by unproved territory the term Zwolle field", as used in this report, includes the entire area from Blue Lake on the west side, through Zwolle proper, and eastward, including the Many or Eastern extension.
