In this Bureau of Mines report, appropriate equations correlating the activity of water with the activities of electrolytes in binary and multicomponent solutions have been derived for computer calculation. It was found that the half-integer power series are far superior to the integer power series, for both types of series having the same number of terms. The pro-posed method of calculation is capable of accurately yielding the activities of all components from the measurements of the activity of a single component at various concentrations. This method replaces the cumbersome and objection-able method of graphical integration of the Gibbs-Duhem equation. Two novel methods are proposed for determination of activities of electrolyte solutions important in hydrometallurgy; (1) Water vapor pressure measurement by differential pressure transducers having an accuracy of 0.001 pet, and (2) transpiration method with an inert gas bubbled through concentrated solutions followed by the analysis of the evaporated and redissolved electrolytes with specific ion electrodes having a sensitivity of ±10-10 molal. The first method is suitable for nonvolatile electrolytes, and the second, for volatile electrolytes such as hydrogen halides, HN03, H2S03, etc. The existing methods of estimation of ionic activities have been surveyed, and the best method has been selected, discussed, and summarized.

Mineral raw materials produced in California, other States, and foreign countries were purchased for consumption in quantities valued at over $60 million at 800 of the 1,200 chemical plants operating in California in 1960, according to questionnaires completed by company officials. These and other data received from mineral consumers, producers, dealers, and Government agencies formed the basis for this the first of a series of reports designed to present the intricate features and relationships controlling mineral raw material supply and demand in California industries. The results of this study indicated certain changes in use patterns of minerals in chemica 1 manufacturing; a shift in requirements from metals to nonmeta ls, from inorganics to organics, from natura 1 to synthet ic materia ls , and from distant to local sources of supply.

Mine One General. The first summer field trip for the purpose of collecting data on open-pit metal mine grounding systems was marred by the fact that the group's ground test instrument was damaged in transit and proved to be inoperative. Fortunately, the mine personnel had a similar instrument which was then used for all tests. System Description. Power is purchased from the utility at either 69 or 100 kV. This is transformed to 4160 V at the pit substations and distributed around the periphery of the pit via a "ring bus." The three phase wires and the safety-ground conductor are carried on a conventional wooden pole and cross-arm support structure. At key loca¬tions, overhead feeders carry power from the ring bus down over the benches and into the pit. Each overhead feeder is terminated at a switchhouse, from which an SHD-GC trailing cable supplies power to the electric loading shovels. Each pit substation has a main or system-ground mat, installed by the utility, and a separate safety-ground mat, which is constructed by mine personnel. Three of the safety-ground mats are quite old, and personnel at the mine could not recall what type of construction was used. However, records are available on the fourth mat and construc¬tion details are shown in Figure 64. "The author was a member of a Commission sent by the Secretary of the Interior to France to investigate developments in mining and metallurgy under stress of war conditions, and also to observe the extent and character of the destruction of the collieries and the steel and iron plants, and methods which were being taken to reestablish them. This commission consisted of F. G. Cottrell, Chief Metallurgist of the Bureau of Mines, Frank H. Probert, Dean of the University of California Mining School, and George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau. While conducting this investigation a trip was made to the Saar Basin to observe the conditions there. Following this Mr. Rice acted as advisor on mining matters to the Representative of the Economic Council in an Interallied conference held at Cologne in April 1919, and subsequently visited the mining districts in central and southern France, Belgium, and Great Britain.The Germans, in planning a campaign for world supremacy, had as one of their first objectives the seizing of the important Briey iron ore deposits of France and the coal fields of Belgium and northern France.Large resources of coal and iron have led to the commercial greatness of the countries possessing them, as exemplified by the great development first in England then in the United States, and in Germany when the minette high phosphorus iron ores became useful through the invention of the Thomas and Gilchrist dephosphorizing process in 1878. However, this development was anticipated by the German scientific advisors in 1871, and led to the then known deposit of minette ore in Lorraine being taken from France by Germany.When these ores became available, Germany made such tremendous strides that its minette ore developments were not sufficient and importation of ore was necessary. Meantime France, by drilling, had established the extension of the minette ore field into French Lorraine. Then it was discovered that France had greater resources, while the German resources were being rapidly depleted.Although Germany, in its Westphalian basin, possessed the most important coal field on the Continent, containing the largest resources in coking coal outside of Great Britain, its coal was distant from the sea coast, so it could not be an important factor in the export business. No doubt this fact caused the German Imperialists to look forward: to securing the coal basin of Belgium and northern France for future ocean trade.It was a striking feature in the German conduct of the war that, although the steel and iron plants of Belgium and France and other industrial establishments in the invaded regions of Belgium and France were utterly destroyed, the iron mines in French Lorraine were not destroyed nor materially damaged by the Germans in their retreat, while the destruction in France continued until the day of the Armistice. The other striking fact is that the coal mines Of Belgium were not destroyed. It can only be conjectured whether this was due to President Wilson's threat of retribution, which did not stay their hand in France, or was due to the fact that they did not consider Belgium as a real competitor. It was evident they wished to cripple France industrially when they could not hold these northern provinces."

As part of a program to investigate technology for the extraction of studied HNO3 alumina from abundant domestic ores , the Bureau of Mines leaching of calcined Georgia kaolinitic clay . In this investigation , iron impurities were removed from the aluminum nitrate pregnant leach liquor by solvent extraction , and the purified liquor was evaporated to prepare a suitably concentrated crystallizer feed liquor . Aluminum nitrate nonahydrate was crystallized from the liquor to separate the aluminum from undesirable trace elements and excess water . Continuous crystallization at 40 ° C in a pilot plant vacuum evaporative unit was performed for 5 days to observe the effects of impurity buildup under minimum bleed- stream conditions . Liquor feed rate was 26 lb/h and AAll (( NNOO33 )) 33..99HH22O0 ((AANNNN)) crystal production rate was 17 lb/h . Fe 203 and Cr203 were not effectively separated from the crystals , and P205 , MgO , and K20 impurities must be removed by recrystallization . Other impurities did not excessively contaminate the crystals . Washing the crystals with water or aqueous HNO3 gave an equivalent increase in crystal purity levels by displacing mother liquor . Theoretical equations , applicable to any continuous evaporative crystallization of developed to produce material balances for engineering ANN , were applications .

The Bureau of Mines performed a study of the availability of cobalt from market economy countries. The study entailed the detailed analysis of 97 deposits which contain 3.9 billion lb of cobalt at the demonstrated level; in 94 of the deposits cobalt is recovered as a byproduct, and in 3 it is considered the primary product. Since 97 pet of all recoverable cobalt is derived as a byproduct from copper and nickel deposits, the report focused on these two sources. At an assumed market price of $0.89flb for copper, $3.45/lb for nickel, $475/tr 021 for platinum, and $7/lb for cobalt, 1,330 million lb of cobalt at the demonstrated level are potentially available. This total includes 1,105 million lb of cobalt from copper properties, 190 million lb from nickel, 29 million lb from platinum, and 6 million lb from primary cobalt. This analysis indicates that the production cost for 589 million lb of cobalt can be totally covered by the revenues obtained from the other metals produced. The impacts of increases in capital investment and energy costs are also discussed.

Tax for Toxic Waste Cleanup. - The Superfund Act of 1980 became effective April 1, and provides that producers of certain metals and chemical substances are to be taxed in order to fund toxic waste cleanup. Industry will provide 88% of the 5-year, $1.6 billion fund. The Environmental Protection Agency will administer the Act, but the Internal Revenue Service will be responsible for collection of the industry tax. Under the Act, nickel companies, for example, will be required to pay a tax of 0.225 cents per pound on pure nickel products produced or imported into the United States. Standard for Exposure to Lead. - The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSPA) has announced a stricter standard on the test of a worker's exposure to lead. Effective May 15, in all lead intensive occupations with the exception of those at primary and secondary lead smelters, a worker would have to be removed from his work station if the level of lead in his blood tests out at 60 micrograms of lead per 100 grams of blood, instead of the previous standard of 70 micrograms. In the case of primary and secondary lead smelters, the ruling has been stayed until June 1, 1981, to allow time for further study.

[The legislation in many States against the present method of producing carbon-black by the incomplete combustion of natural gas, and the continually increasing demand for gas for otter purposes, indicates that the supply of carbon-black may Gradually be decreased and that new methods for its production, utilizing a greater parentage of the carbon in the has should be developed. In the course of investigations of the effects on hydrocarbons of high voltage discharges, it was noted that under certain conditions natural gas could be decomposed and that carbon-black could be produced. The effects of several tyres of electrical discharges on natural gas have, accordingly, been studied' in order to find out the fundamental factors underlying the reactions and their possible influence in the recovery of a greater part of the carbon content of natural gas than is now possible. Present commercial plants using natural gas for the manufacture of carbon-black recover from 0.9 to 1.5 pounds of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gala consumed, or less than 5 per cent of the total Gabon in the gas: It should be noted, however, that the, present methods involve heating the gas to incandescense by burning it as a luminous flame, and a considerable part of the gas is thus consumed as a source of hest. If this heat can be supplied from some other source, or if a more efficient method of applying the energy con. tamed in part of the gas, to the decomposition of the rest of it, can be worked out, then a greater yield of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gas care be expected. Determining backfill stress is an important part of evaluating mine safety, whether personnel are working in proximity to backfill or in other areas of the mine where backfill is an integral part of regional support. To assist in determining stress in backfill more accurately, researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Placer Dome, Inc. (Turquoise Ridge Mine), Peabody Energy Co. (Foidel Creek Mine), and Hecla Mining Co. (Lucky Friday Mine) used temperature readings recorded by thermistors to correct for the influence of temperature on stress data. These thermistors were positioned in the stems of earth pressure cells installed in backfill. Corrections were then calculated and compared using four different methods: polynomial equations fit to temperature-versus-stress plots before the pressure cells were loaded by overburden, a factor provided by the manufacturer, a theoretically derived factor, and a linear correction factor based on information collected during periods when no mining was taking place. To evaluate the accuracy of these methods, corrected stresses were calculated using each method and results compared to cumulative stresses caused by blasting at one of the mines. Results indicated that only a small percentage of the temperature effect on stress was corrected using the factor from the manufacturer because that factor accounted for only the pressure transducer and not the entire instrument body. Stresses adjusted with a linear correction factor based on information collected during periods when no mining was taking place were the most accurate. Stresses recorded at two other mines were corrected using the theoretical method and the polynomial equations method; the two methods produced similar results. For some time intervals, the results were identical.

This paper is the second and concluding report of the results of the Bureau of Mines' twenty-second semiannual survey of motor fuel marketed in the United States. The first paper Was published as Report of Investigations 30634 and reported data relating to gravity, vapor pressure, and distillation range of the samples. The present paper deals particularly with results of the determination of copper strip corrosion (method 530.22),5 color (method 10.11),6 sulphur content by the lamp method, 7 copper dish evaporation residue (method 530.1),8 and "gum" content as given by the steam-oven method as developed by the Bureau of Mines. 9 The price at the time the sample was taken and the tax are also stated for each sample. The sample numbers used throughout this report are identical with those used in Report of Investigations 306310; ?for example, No. 225 of this report is the same sample as No. 225 of Report of Investigations 3063.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of lead and zinc from 104 domestic mines and deposits. Fourteen primary lead and fifty-three primary zinc operations with in situ demonstrated resources containing 27.3 million metric tons (t) of lead and 53 million t of zinc were subsequently evaluated. Potentially 17.5 million t of lead and 2.4 million t of byproduct zinc could be recovered from 14 primary lead operations. Economic evaluations performed in constant January 1982 dollars determined a long-run total cost per pound of recoverable commodity. Including a 15-pct discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR), 59 pct of primary lead was potentially available at or below $0.32 per pound of lead. Potentially 40 million t of zinc and 5.6 million t of byproduct lead could be recovered from 53 primary zinc operations. Ninety percent of the recoverable zinc is potentially available from currently nonproducing mines and deposits, and a weighted average of their long-run total costs was determined at $0.98 per pound of zinc. At a breakeven (0-pct) DCFROR, these non producing operations had a weighted average long-run total cost of $0.58 per pound of zinc. Sensitivity analyses illustrated that operations that recover byproducts were most sensitive to fluctuating metal prices, producing operations were more sensitive to increased smelter treatment charges, and nonproducing operations were impacted most by the DCFROR.

Twelve properties in the Riverside Mountains have moderate to high potential, for silver, gold, copper, and molybdenum. Six properties in the Big Maria Mountains have moderate potential for zinc, lead, copper, silver, iron ore, and limestone. The Big Maria Mountains also have occurrences of building stone. Four properties in or near the study area have low-grade gold-silver-copper resources totalling more than 300 thousand tons (270,000 t). An estimated 29 million tons (26 million t) of limestone and dolomite, and 620,000 long tons (630,000 t) of iron ore are in the Big Maria Mountains section of the study area. INTRODUCTION The Big Maria Mountains Wilderness Study Area covers about 50,538 acres (20,453 ha) near the Colorado River in eastern Riverside County, California (fig. 1). The study includes portions of both the Big Maria and Riverside Mountains. It lies north of Blythe, California and south of California Highway 62 in the Mojave Desert province of the California Desert Conservation Area. The study area consists of two mountain ranges surrounded mostly by broad alluvial slopes or bajadas. It extends for 25 mi (40 km) from the Riverside Mountains on the north, to the south end of the elongate Big Maria Mountains.

The final 26 tables of this chapter, tables 25-50, extend and expand the statistical series on production that was started in the 1963 edition of the "Area Reports: International" volume of the "Minerals Yearbook" and that was subsequently updated and expanded in the 1965 and 1967-89 editions. Continuing the practice started in 1989, a column has been included in each of these tables providing a 5-year average for 1986-90, inclusive. This should provide a clearer picture more rapidly of the role of each major producer over the 5-year period. The listing order of major producers, however, continued to be, as in past years, in descending order of rank in the year of review, 1990. With the inclusion of silver and uranium in the 1988 edition of this chapter, this group of tables now includes each of the crude minerals that ranked from 1st to 19th in 1983 terms of value of their output (as well as four others of lesser rank). These 23 crude mineral commodities accounted for 93% of the estimated value of world crude mineral production in 1983. In addition, world output of five key downstream products-aluminum, steel, cement, nitrogen in ammonia, and refined oil-are included because of their significance as products.

The changing demographics of the mining industry make successful passing of knowledge and skills to the next generation critical. Training methods and technologies are being developed to meet this need. Twenty years ago classroom training was largely a one-way transfer of knowledge through instructor lectures. In contrast, instructors today can use virtual reality technologies to guide trainees as they fully participate in learning experiences. Trainees can interact with the virtual work environment, co-workers, and equipment without being exposed to workplace hazards. The speed of advancement in mine safety, health, and production training shows no sign of slowing in the next 20 years. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health have studied and participated in the evolution of miner training. A look at training materials they have created in the past and those they are currently developing reveals changes in methods and technologies over time and also key characteristics which have remained constant. Possibilities for the future can he discussed in the framework of an implementation of virtual reality in new miner training sessions. The example computer-based training package teaches new miners to read mine maps and provides opportunity to practice navigation skills in a virtual mine. With this 'serious game', trainees experience the look and feel of moving through an underground coal mine while in the safety of their classroom. During field-testing in 2007, trainees and instructors responded very favourably to this new way of learning. The software was usable by mine trainers with even limited computer expertise and could be installed on the affordable computers they were using for their more traditional slide presentations. The Underground Coal Mine Map Reading Training's foundation on past successful development strategies and its acceptance by today's instructors and trainees provide valuable lessons for developing training materials, strategies, and technologies for mining's future.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a dewatering technique for treating wastewater that was tested on waste slurry from a commercial tile company in Alabama. Raw wastewater samples were pretreated with 10 Ib calcium chloride and 10 lb Wyoming bentonite per 1,000 gal of slurry. After pretreatment, polyethylene oxide (PEO) at dosages varying from 0.05 to 0.20 lb per 1,000 gal was mixed with the waste slurry, forming strong, tough floes that were separated from the clarified water using a trammel. The flocculated slurry was dewatered to a consistency that could be handled for subsequent disposal in a landfill. The clarified water quality was equivalent to that of the company's present treatment system.

A series of four coal combustion experiments was conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) in the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to evaluate the response of fire sensors to a small 0.61 m square smoldering coal fire which transitions to flaming combustion in the presence of diesel emissions. An optical path smoke sensor alarmed earlier than a point type diffusion mode ionization smoke sensor which alarmed prior to a CO alert value of 5 PPM above ambient. The presence of steady state diesel emissions resulted in a decrease in the optical smoke sensor analog output voltage signal by less than 1.4 pct for the three coal fire experiments in which a diesel engine was operating, whereas the ionization smoke sensor output decreased between 10.8 and 26.7 pct after the initial surge of the diesel engine. A commercial diesel discriminating fire sensor did not alarm for a fire in the one experiment for which it was used. The results of the experiments demonstrated that an optical path smoke sensor might be used to detect a coal fire under the experimental conditions considered of starting a diesel engine followed by a slowly developing coal fire.

The formation of nitrogen oxides, the decay of carbon monoxide, and the concentrations of residual hydrocarbons in the secondary combustion zones of propane-air and methane-air flames were studied in three enclosed burners designed to simulate gas appliances such as space and water heaters. The effect of thermally or chemically perturbing the combustion gases above these flames was determined theoretically and by means of factorial experiments. The concentrations of air pollutants and the flame temperatures were measured, and the effects of ingress of secondary air into the primary and secondary combustion zones, flame stability, burner port surface, and simulated recycling of combustion gases were noted. Based on this study, four principles were derived that, applied to gas appliance design, will insure minimal emissions of these air pollutants: 1. Oxides of nitrogen can best be kept low by depressing peak temperatures to about 3,050° F. 2. If this is not possible, then the secondary combustion zone should be cooled rapidly to this temperature. 3. Carbon monoxide concentrations can be limited by rapid induction of secondary air. 4. Hydrocarbon concentrations can be controlled by designing for well-seated, stable flames. In addition, empirical reaction rates were derived that predict the concentrations of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide in the primary and secondary combustion zones.

An experimental iron blast furnace of 3-foot-diameter hearth, producing about 12 tons of metal per day, was operated for 2 weeks with various proportions of anthracite replacing a corresponding amount of coke. The furnace operated well with anthracite in amounts up to 40 percent of the total fuel and produced metal of uniformly low sulfur and normal silicon contents. An increase to 50 percent anthracite during two attempts resulted in poor operation and the charge hung in the s haft of the furnace. INTRODUCTION Anthracite production in Pennsylvania decreased from 84,400,000 net tons in 1926 to 40,600,000 net tons in 1952, and there was a further decline in 1953 to 30,900,000 net tons. Employment in the anthracite industry dropped from 165,000 men working an average of 244 days per year in 1926 to 57,900 working an average of 163 days per year in 1953,3/ which has naturally resulted in considerable unemployment in the region. The industry is actively engaged in promoting new uses for anthracite to increase the demand and thus improve economic conditions in the region. One possibility is the use of anthracite to replace part of the coke for smelting iron ore in blast furnaces. The tests in this report were made to determine whether this use of anthracite would be feasible.

The Bureau of 'Mines publishes in its ?Minerals Yearbook? a series of indexes on the domestic minerals industry. Among these are the index of physical volume of mineral production, indexes of stocks, and indexes of average unit mine value and implicit unit value, This report describes the material coverage of these indexes and the methods used in their construction. Detailed descriptions are given for several other mineral-oriented indexes regularly published by other government agencies. These descriptions give the index user a better understanding of what each index purports to measure and aids him in selecting the most appropriate index for his purpose.

The use of vertical surface degasification boreholes with bleeder systems and the use of a timbered bleeder system to degasify gob areas were studied by the Bureau of Mines. This report describes three gob degasification studies conducted in the Pittsburgh coalbed. One study was conducted to determine the number of panels degasified with one large borehole. The study showed that the borehole provided degasification for three panels. Another study was conducted during the retreat of a 35-acre panel with a single-entry and a two-entry bleeder system and a large surface borehole. A major portion of methane emitted from the panel was carried away by the bore-hole, leaving the bleeder entries relatively free of methane. The last study was made to determine the effectiveness of a timbered bleeder system. The bleeder entries successfully degasified the gob area when enough entries were available and adequate pressure was available to force the air through roof falls.
