"This circular is part III of a series of papers reviewing the literature on air conditioning in mines, with particular reference to the health, safety, and efficiency of miners.4/ It deals with theoretical and practical methods of conditioning air in mines to correct or alleviate the health hazards described in parts I and II and discusses the results attained by some of the systems now in use in various-parts of the world.The principal conditions to be corrected or alleviated are the chemical qualities of mine air (especially when contaminated with toxic and noxious gases and dusts) and the physical qualities (abnormal mine temperatures and humidities) that emanate from various sources in underground workings. Air motion and barometric pressure are physical qualities also to be considered.From the standpoint of health, knowledge of the composition of the air, or atmosphere, in mines and other underground operations is of prime importance. Suitable control measures or plans of procedure to combat or eliminate the hazards from contaminants must be based upon accurate information obtained by the selection and use of proper methods of sampling and analyzing mine atmospheres (1).5/Conditioning air is one of the most essential factors to be considered in any underground workings, not only from the standpoint of health and safety but also with regard to efficiency and productivity. Without modern air-conditioning, the war's great demand upon the copper mines could hardly have been met, as the mechanical refrigeration cooled off sweltering holes in less than a month, whereas in the past it was standard practice to blow air through the tunnels for 3 years or so until they were cooled.This paper discusses methods of determining the chemical and physical qualities of mine air and their control. "INTRODUCTION Numerous deposits of iron ore are found in Cherokee, Bartow, Floyd, and Polk Counties in northwest Georgia. The deposits are generally small and irregular in shape. The ore is usually referred to as ""brown ore"" and is predominately limonite. The crude or ""bank ore"" has to be washed and concentrated before being shipped.The proximity of the deposits to the Birmingham furnaces and a favorable freight differential permit the operation of many deposits that otherwise would be uneconomical. The district produced 413,468 long tons of brown-ore concentrates, averaging 45.53 percent iron in 1943.The necessity of developing additional iron-ore reserves for the war energeucy to supplement the production of the Birmingham district, prompted the Bureau of Mines to initiate exploration of the more promising northwest Georgia deposits. Thirteen properties in the four counties were explored during the program (fig. 1).HISTORY AND PRODUCTIONSeveral furnaces were operated in the district until the early 1900's, ranging from charcoal furnaces to more modern plants with capacities up to 50 tons of pig iron. No furnaces have operated for about 40 years, the product being shipped to Alabama and Tennessee.Bartow County iron mining is declining, although formerly it was the principal producer of the district. Most of the known merchantable ore deposits have been exhausted. For the past 3 years the Mitchell-Hodge mine has annually produced about 225,000 long tons of concentrates containing 46 to 43 percent iron and at present is the only large producer in Bartow County."

"Introduction**The progress of the ""Safety First"" movement in the oil fields of California during the past few years has been remarkably rapid. It has been generally concede by those who have learned to value the life and limbs of their employees, that safety is essential to efficiency and no company that has a high accident rate can be considered an efficient organization. Accidents have a destructive effect on the morale of any body of workers and cause disorganization and delays.The increasing danger to life and limb involved in the drilling for and the production of oil and gas, has become so great that it is clearly evident that everything possible must be done to keep it within the narrowest possible limits.There is a tendency toward carelessness, especially by men who are employed in hazardous occupations. This is brought about by the familiarity of the risk under which they are working and in no industry is this more forcibly exemplified than in the oil fields. Men have performed the same or similar duties for many years and have worked around similar hazards and unprotected machinery until many have can entire disregard for the dangers surrounding then. Very often familiarity with a hazard occasions a contempt for that hazard which only too often results disastrously."

The West Lynn Canal subarea of the Juneau Mining District (JMD) is defined by Lynn Canal on the east, Davidson Glacier to the north, Icy Strait to the south and the Glacier Bay National Park Boundary to the west (figs. C-l and C-2). This area extends along the main-land west of Juneau (across Lynn Canal) northerly, to approximately 20 miles south of the city of Haines. The only roads in the area are relatively new logging roads at the southern end constructed to support a U.S. Forest Service timber sale. There is also local road access near the community of Excursion Inlet. Access to the remainder of the region is either by boat, aircraft, or 'foot. Helicopters provide the only time effective access to all but the coastal parts of the West Lynn Canal subarea. Coastal areas may be reached by small boat or float aircraft. There is an unimproved dirt airstrip just north of the mouth of the Endicott River. This airstrip is suitable for use by light aircraft. The subarea lies within the Tongass National Forest and is managed by the Department of Agriculture, U.S. Forest Service. Approximately two-thirds of the forest lands are open to mineral entry under the current Tongass Land Management plan. The remaining forest lands comprise the Endicott River Wilderness area, which is closed to mineral entry. Private lands within the study area are sparse, with scattered homestead tracts along the coastal regions and in the Excursion Inlet area. Sealaska (Southeast Alaska Regional Native Corporation) also has land selections in the southern Chilkat Range. Tidal and submerged lands are owned by the State of Alaska.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the geology and physical properties of core samples at the Sunnyside coal mine No. 1, Sunnyside, Utah, and was written in conjunction with the Single-Entry Program conducted at the mine. The objective of this program was to test the hypothesis that the single-entry system in the Sunnyside mine, supported in the center by open cribs and divided by a fire-resistant partition, is equivalent to or better than a two-entry sys-tem. Drill cores, taken underground at 15 sites in the single-entry study area, facilitated the construction of geologic cross sections of the entries. Physical property data obtained from the drill cores was used in a three-dimensional finite element analysis program to evaluate the stability of the openings, the support requirements, and the de formation characteristics of the roof and floor material. Data on 10 physical property parameters for 5 rock types plus coal are also tabulated and discussed.

The mining law of British North Borneo is entitled " The Mining Ordinance , 1927. 113 The only mining regulation or rule available is " Rules 313 , 114 passed in accordance with article 26 of the ordinance of 1927. Before the passage of this legislation , the country had no specific law governing the granting of mineral rights , although the land law contained provisions relating to mining lands . The land ordinance of 19135 still controls in a few details . All references in this paper , unless otherwise specifically designated , are to the mining ordinance .

During calendar year 1972, the Bureau of Mines was engaged in some 20 major areas of research for the development of new and improved efficient methods of conservation and utilization for petroleum and natural gas, oil shale, and coal. Made up of numerous projects described in this report, the program was carried out through research performed at research centers and laboratories in the field supervised and supported by administrative personnel of this Bureau of the Department of the Interior. Based un this research, 186 technical reports were published by the Bureau or others, and numerous other reports were prepared for Federal agencies, State agencies, and organizations engaged in cooperative research programs with the Bureau.

During fiscal year 1969, the Bureau of Mines was engaged in 66 projects to improve methods for producing and utilizing petroleum. Programs directed toward the continued conservation of this natural resource, including crude oil, natural gas, and oil shale, were carried out through research performed at four laboratories supervised and supported by administrative personnel of this Bureau of the Department of the Interior. Over 100 technical papers and reports were published by the Bureau or others based on this research, and numerous other reports were prepared for U.S. Government agencies, State agencies, and organizations of the petroleum and natural gas industry engaged in cooperative research programs with the Bureau.

"INTRODUCTION The metallurgical-research program of the Bureau of Mines .for the past 15 years has emphasized the production of high-purity nonferreus metals through the utilization of our available resources, ores, reducing agents, fuel, and power.Ore dressing or concentration, has always been a vitally important part of nonferrous metallurgy, and the Bureau continues to give most of its attention to it. In the field of the traditional nonferrous metals, the Bureau staff has developed natural-gas reduction of zinc, the application of glomerule technique to preparing high-grade lead concentrates for Scotch-hearth smelting, the production of electrolytic antimony from precious metal-bearing ores, and the recovery of nickel from nickel-chrome-iron ores.In the field of light metals, the Bureau staff has developed several improvements in both magnesium and aluminum production and in alloys of these metals. In the so-called ""rare-metal"" field, Bureau activities have included the production of pure ductile titanium on a larger scale than heretofore attempted, the electrolytic production of cobalt, chromium, and manganese which may now take their proper places as bases for nonferrous alloys as well -as ingredients of special steels. The Bureau staff has investigated many of these new alloys. Investigations of methods of recovering vanadium from its low-grade domestic ores have given promising results. Methods for the preparation of metallic zirconium have been improved."

[Methods s of preparing the manganese metal that has been used in chemical and metallurgical investigations have passed through a cycle. Most of the investigations made e before the turn of the century, used Moissan's pyrophoric man manganese.3/ This material was made b; electrolysis into a mercury cathode and distillation in vacuo. The Canyon Diggings zinc-lead deposit is in an area of structural deformation of sedimentary rooks in Newton County, Mo., 14 miles southeast of Joplin, within the southern limits of the Tri-State district. Mining and milling on the several tracts covering the area had been carried on sporadically since 1900, and incomplete records show a production of 1,341 tonsof zinc and lead concentrates. On the northern part of the deposit the predominant metal is which occurs as galena, cerrusite, and pyromorphite in broken chert near the surface. On the southern part, lead is subordinate to zinc, which occurs mainly as carbonate and silicate minerals in brecciated chert to a maximum depth of about 150 feet. Analyses of samples from Bureau of Mines drilling indicate that approximately 77 percent of the zinc and 50 percent of trio lead i8 in nonsulfide minerals resulting from the oxidation of sphalerite and galena. Between August 12, 1948, and October 5, 1949, the Bureau of Mines investigated the deposit by churn drilling and sampling 85 holes aggregating 10,571 feet of bore and sampling two mill-tailings dumps and three mine dumps. Factual data on the investigation and the logs of Bureau of Mines drill holes are presented in this report.

"This report presents the results of investigations of ore-testing projects assigned to the Ore-Dressing Section, Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines, at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station, Rolla Mo. During the fiscal year ended June 30, 1941.The manner of approving ore-testing projects has been explained in a previous reports. 4/ The testing procedures likewise have been described. 5/The treatment methods described are based upon laboratory experiments with small amounts of sample and naturally are subject to the inherent, normal, limiting conditions of such procedure. It is not intended to describe treatments in detail, but rather to indicate applicable methods. Local operating conditions, when the laboratory results are applied to plant operations, may require further study. Large-scale pilot-plant tests should be made before commercial operations are begun, so that translation from the experimental stage will yield satisfactory results."

In 1985 the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the mineral resources of tie Bruneau River and Jarbidge River study areas, Owyhee County, ID, for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The study areas, separated by a narrow corridor, include 90,000 acres of the 107,020-acre Bruneau River Wilderness Study Area (ID-111-17) and 47,000 acres of the 75,340-acre Jarbidge River Wilderness Study Area (ID-17-11). They lie 26 miles and 55 miles, respectively, due south of Mountain Home, ID. Approximately 38 placer claims for gold and 182 lode and placer claims for jasper, agate, and limestone were located within and adjacent to the study areas from 1893 to 1981. Currently, there are eight mining claims for jasper at Indian Hot Springs along the corridor between the study areas.

This circular, which is a revision and combination of two previous publications,3 4/ presents information on the different types of equipment that may be used to analyze mine atmospheres, with particular reference to the application and limitations of each type. Such information is frequently requested by mining companies, State mining departments, and other agencies concerned with safety in mining who wish advice regarding methods of analysis of mine atmospheres and the equipment necessary for establishing laboratories for that purpose. Since the Haldane-type apparatus is particularly applicable to the accurate determination of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and combustible gases such as methane in mine atmospheres, that apparatus and the method of operation are described in detail. The circular presents results of a critical study of the accuracy attainable with the Haldane-type apparatus in the determination of methane in concentrations of the order of 0.25 percent, by volume. Analytical procedures involved in the other methods discussed are presented in publications referenced in this circular. Information is given also on the various accessory equipment needed in a laboratory for the analysis of mine atmospheres, and suggestions on laboratory design are included. Methods of chemical analysis of clays for the following constituents are presented: moisture, ignition loss Fe2O3, TiO2, P2O5, CaO, MgO, Na2O, K2O, total. carbon, carbonate carbon total sulfur, soluble salts, and soluble sulfate. In these procedures the attainment of accuracy has been the primary consideration sample was taken to insure accuracy, with ordinary precautions. The procedures may therefore be somewhat somewhat and will not be suited for routine work on samples for which the approximate analysis is already known and in which the need for accuracy is not very exacting. However, the method shod be as a set of detailed directions, that have been tested and shown to yield accurate results with clays and other aluminum silicate minerals. Among these minerals are clays of all types, bentonite bauxite, shale, brick; soil, calcined refractory, and sand. Although some of the methods are Unusual, no particular claim is laid to originality. The material was drawn frail many sources, put together and tested.

This report is volume 1 of an eleven-volume final report for a Grant completed by The Pennsylvania State University for the Bureau of Mines to develop a dynamic general purpose computer simulation model for underground coal mining. The simulator developed under the Grant has a wide range of possible applications in the design and evaluation of underground coal mining systems from the standpoints of health and safety, productivity, and mine environment. The Master Design Simulator consists of nine free-standing function-oriented subsystem models linked together into an integrated, comprehensive model of an entire mining system. The subsystems comprising the Master Design Simulator include geology and reserves, methane generation, roof support, subsidence, production, rail haulage, cost, water generation, and ventilation. This volume of the final report contains a statement of the purpose and scope of work of the Grant, and provides an overview of the Master Design Simulator with a brief description of each subsystem. Also included is a discussion of several areas of application for the simulator.

The Explosives Division of the United States Bureau of Mines makes certain laboratory and field investigations that deal with explosions, explosives, ignition, and combustion, together with many related problems, such as the cause and prevention of fires, and certain fundamental scientific questions bearing upon the determination of the chemical and physical mechanisms underlying some of the important phenomena encountered. Its work on explosives has been particularly directed toward determination of the chemical and physical characteristics of explosives designed for use in coal mines and in a more limited way to those used in metal mines, tunnels, quarries, and other engineering operations. Since its creation in 1910, the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines has pioneered in the development of mineral technology, through research. From the very beginning, research on mine health and safety has been a dominating concern, and a responsibility that expanded markedly as a result of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Until the mid-1970's research on fuel technology and coal production also was an important part of the Bureau's work. But in the four years following the 1973 oil crisis, Congress established a reorganized Federal energy research apparatus in which all fossil fuel research-encompassing extraction, use, and conservation-was centralized. Today, the Department of Energy houses Federal research on coal mine production technology, while research on coal and noncoal mine health and safety and environmental technology, and on noncoal mine production technology, remains in the Interior Department as a continuing responsibility of the Bureau of Mines. This Bureau of Mines report reviews the mineral industry of the Black Hills area, including Butte, Custer, Fall River, Lawrence, Meade, and Penning- ton Counties, S. Dak.; and Crook, Niobrara, and Weston Counties, Wyo. It includes discussion of geological occurrence, processing, and potential of 27 commodities that have been produced from the nine-county area. The value of mineral production exceeds $70 million annually. Gold and petroleum account for two-thirds of the total, followed by clays, cement, sand and gravel, and rock. The combined mineral industries annually consume 268 million kilowatts of electrical energy, 933 million Mcf of gas, and 2 million barrels of fuel oil. Water consumption is about 10,000 gallons per minute. About 2,700 persons are employed on a year-round or significant part-time basis.

IN INDUSTRIAL and domestic daily life carbon monoxide is the most frequently encountered toxic gas. hazardous concentrations of carbon monoxide may be present in the vicinity of many industrial operations, such as metallurgical processes, coke ovens, and fuel- and synthesis-gas producers, and may be encountered in confined spaces, such as dwellings, garages, workshops, vehicular tunnels, and mining operations, in connection with the use of heaters, boilers, internal-combustion engines, after blasting operations, and after fires and explosions. Evaluation and control of the health and safety hazard caused by carbon monoxide depend primarily on the analytical detection of the presence of carbon monoxide and determination of its concentration in air and in various gaseous mixtures. The choice of method of analysis in any particular situation depends on such factors as required accuracy, range of concentration involved, convenience, speed of analysis required, quantity of sample available, qualitative composition of sample or atmosphere to be analyzed, and possible effects of interfering gases. Some of the methods described require only adequate understanding of operational techniques, whereas others require thorough appreciation and skill in applying the principles involved. The instruments and analytical procedures commonly used for detecting and determining carbon monoxide are described in detail, and reference is made to more specialized methods:
