Mineral resources, or a potential for their discovery, occur at 34 localities in the Glacier Peak Wilderness and adjacent areas of the north Cascade Range of Washington (see plate). Eighteen of the mineral deposits are in the established Wilderness, four are in or partly in contiguous RARE II (Roadless Area Review and Evaluation) lands recommended by the Forest Service for addition to the Wilderness (A, D and G6031.), three are in adjacent RARE II lands excluded from wilderness consideration, and nine are in nearby roaded areas excluded from the RARE II inventory. Mineral commodities that might be produced from the Wilderness and recommended additions are gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, arsenic, cadmium, tungsten, cobalt, limestone (marble), pumice, and volcanic cinders. Mineral production from adjacent lands might include most of these commodities, plus antimony, decorative stone, pyrite, silica, and garnet.

The strength characteristics of hydraulic sandfill modified by varying quantities of type III portland cement and two flocculants were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Three different sand-cement ratios were examined using different percentages of flocculant. Two other experimental variables were curing time and weight-percent solids for hydraulic mixture. Results of unconfined compression tests with strain are discussed. Maximum strength was achieved with 0.5 weight-percent of ferric sulfate per ton of solids when the slurry mixture was 75 weight-percent solids. The bearing capacity of hydraulic sandfill is reduced by increasing the water content and decreasing the amount of cement mixed with sandfill.

This study was conducted using field interview methods to determine the data and information requirements of the underground coal mining industry for improving mine ground control procedures in existing and future mines. The establishment of a central geologic and engineering information resource center with computer searchable abstract files that can locate and supply descriptive and case-study literature addressing specific mining problems is recommended. Research done under Bureau of Mines Contract J0395010, includes a Bibliography of Underground Coal Mine Ground Control Literature.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been conducting a series of rock mechanics investigations at the Lucky Friday Mime in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho. In the present study, the energy release rate (ERR) index was used to evaluate three underhand stope backfill parameters--cement content, density, and placement gap-to determine their influence on rock bursts. This index provides a relative measure of the likelihood of rock bursting for a given rock mass. It is known that the elastic idealization of the rock mass inherent in this method causes underestimation of stope closure and hence underestimation of the influence of backfill on rock bursting. However, this evaluation still showed that (1) changing from present practice to one in which backfill was omitted altogether would increase the ERR by 42 pct and (2) perfect placement of backfill would reduce the ERR below present practice levels by 28 pct. The easiest step toward perfect placement would be elimination of the placement gap, which accounted for half of the difference in ERR between present practice and ideal placement conditions. There was no indication that increasing initial fill strength through increased cement content would affect the ERR.

This report summarizes a study conducted by The Service Bureau Corporation for the Bureau of Mines. Evaluations reflected herein are the result of an independent investigation by The Service Bureau Corporation of methane considerations during coal mining. The study is oriented toward a systematic analysis of methane control problems during coal mining. Throughout this study an attempt has been made to ensure considerations consistent with the recently enacted Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. References to reports by The Bureau of Mines and others are made for the purposes of establishing identification between the evaluations contained in this report and on-going research efforts.

One of a series published by the Bureau of Mines covering research investigations in rock drillability, this report of field drilling results extends earlier laboratory findings and provides a relatively simple procedure for predicting percussive drilling rates with reasonable accuracy. Two percussive drills mounted on a truck were used to drill a total of 25 rock types, and the results were used to develop a prediction equation. The equation was tested on a set of unrelated laboratory percussive drilling data, and the comparison between predicted and actual rates is shown in tabular form.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines report is to describe the methods and establish the basic economics for dragline, shovel-truck, and scraper mining systems. An overall view of the techniques of preliminary design and the cost involved is presented. Considerations of equipment selection, emphasizing short-range evaluation of required equipment, and a long-range evaluation are considered at a constant production rate over the life of a hypothetical mine. Separate cost analyses for each system were based on 1977 equipment prices, prevailing wage rates, and associated mining costs. Specific engineering and cost breakdown for such items as access roads, transmission line installation, rail spurs, etc., are beyond the scope of this report.

This report identifies all the possible activities, variables and factors that contribute to the surface subsidence process over room and pillar workings. These factors are responsible for mine instability and collapse that ultimately transforms into surface subsidence. Such a failure mechanism is initiated by the failure of the mine floor bed and or the failure of the pillars or the failure of the roof after second mining, which eventually brings down the roof. The individual responses of the pillar, floor and roof rocks to the mining induced stresses and the complex interaction between these components can't be attributable to any single factor. Also, no attempt has been made to quantify the significance of each of these factors and relate to the ground subsidence due to the lack of field data. The discussion here is centered primarily on the first mining though second mining is mentioned very briefly,

A Bureau of Mines investigation was conducted to determine the effect of specimen volume on the apparent tensile strength of disks of St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite, Lithonia granite, and Rockville granite. The investigation used a technique developed by the Bureau to determine apparent tensile strength. Because the test specimens were selected without macroscopic defects, that is, cracks, joints, and planes of weakness, the strength variations are solely due to microscopic features. Several replications of each test were performed. Data for each set of specimens were fitted to a power law of the form y = axb, where y = apparent tensile strength, x = specimen volume, and a and b are constants. This power law is essentially a form of Weibull's theory. The average coefficients of correlation for St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite, Lithonia granite, and Rockville granite were 0.85, 0.53, and 0.78, respecitvely. In all cases a decrease in strength with increasing volume was noted; in the extreme case, a decrease of 40 pct was noted with an elevenfold increase in volume. The decrease in strength with increasing specimen volume is explained in terms of Weibull's theory.

Annoyance, fatigue, and musculoskeletal pain have been reported during prolonged exposures to propulsion-generated vibration in military propeller aircraft1. The objective of this study was to determine the vibration mitigation properties of selected seat cushions and the effects of occupant seating posture during exposure to higher frequency multi-axis vibration associated with military propeller aircraft. Methods A Navy E-2C Hawkeye crew seat was mounted onto the Six Degree-of-Freedom Motion Simulator (SIXMODE). Six seat pan cushion configurations were tested during exposure to an E-2C vibration signal collected in the field1. Seat pan cushions 1 – 5 were used with the original E-2C seat back cushion. Cushion configuration 6 included seat pan cushion 5 with a prototype seat back cushion. Triaxial accelerometer pads were mounted onto the seat pan and seat back cushions to measure the vibration entering the human. Data were collected for seven subjects seated upright with their backs in contact with the seat (back-on) and not in contact with the seat (back-off). Spectral analysis techniques were used to analyze data at the two dominant frequencies associated with the propulsion system (propeller rotation frequency (PRF) ~18.5 Hz, and blade passage frequency (BPF) ~73.5 Hz). Overall accelerations were also calculated between 1 and 80 Hz. Vibration Total Values (VTVs) were calculated using the weighted seat pan and seat back (back-on only) accelerations and compared to the comfort reactions given in ISO 2631-1: 19972. Results In general, the highest accelerations observed at the seat pan occurred in the fore-and-aft (X) direction at both the PRF and the BPF for all cushions and both postures. The most pronounced effect was at the BPF in the X direction, where all configurations showed significantly lower seat pan accelerations than configuration 1 (original E-2C cushion) with the back-on posture. Configuration 5 was the exception with the back-off posture (Fig. 1A, Repeated Measures ANOVA, P<0.05). The most pronounced effect of posture occurred at the PRF in the X direction, where all cushion configurations showed significantly lower seat pan accelerations with the back-off posture (Fig. 1B). All configurations except configuration 2 showed similar VTVs as compared to Configuration 1 (Fig. 2, P<0.05). Configuration 2 tended to show the lowest weighted acceleration levels. To those concerned in attaining greater safety to life and incidentally to property in coal mining, the meeting of representatives of the national mine safety research organiza¬ tions of the principal coal-producing countries, which was called by the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain at its experimental station near Buxton, should have deep significance. It is notable, first, because it meant the friendly cooperation of countries not many years ago engaged on either side in the great World War; and second, because of the remarkable degree of agreement in the essential fundamental factors and methods of attaining greater safety in coal mines when it is considered that the questions were approached by different paths and that the applications dealt with widely differing natural conditions and national points of view. Varying views, of course, were held as to the relative importance of certain factors, but the differences were of detail rather than of principle. When the meeting adjourned it was unanimously agreed that such meetings should be continued annually and that the greatest benefit was to be derived by close cooperation in the exchange of data. Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, and the United States were represented by one or several members of the respective national research organization. It is of interest to note that this research work in Belgium, France, and Germany is supported directly by na¬ tional organizations of mine operators or owners but placed under a scientist appointed by the respective Government, thus giving the work official standing. In Great Britain the work is carried on by a Government board, consisting of persons connected with the coal¬ mining industry or in mining research, appointed by the Secretary for Mines, to direct the work of research of the Mines Department. It does not, however, come under its inspection service. Its work is supported by a penny-a-ton tax on output of coal. In the United States the mine-safety research work is directly supported by the Federal Government.

This report presents production and delivered costs for coal exports from the five major Western coal-exporting countries: Australia, Canada. Colombia, South Africa, and the United States. Cost data were compiled from visits to 43 mines by U.S. Bureau of Mines engineers between 1985 and 1990. All report costs are in January 1989 U.S. dollars per short ton. Production costs for raw coal are divided into mining and regulatory categories. Costs are broken down by type of cost, type of mine. and country. Scheduled operating and capital costs for raw coal were processed by the Bureau&apos;s MINSIM discounted cash flow program to determine total production costs calculated at 0% and 15% discounted cash flow rates of return (DCFROR). Delivered costs are for salable coal delivered to various markets. Costs are broken down by supply country, market, and type of cost. Scheduled operating and capital costs for salable coal were processed by the Bureau&apos;s MINSIM discounted cash-flow program to determine total salable coal costs at 0% DCFROR. Added to total salable coal costs were transportation and port costs to get delivered costs. Comparative overview information on the coal industries of the five study countries are appended. This appendix includes information on industry economics and exports, production and reserves, and coal industry issues.

The value of Alabama&apos;s nonfuel mineral production in 1986 was $405.2 million, a slight decrease from that of 1985. Alabama was second in the Nation in production of bauxite, crushed marble, and ferroalloys; third b fire clay; fifth in masonry cement and lime; sixth in total clays; and seventh in recovered sulfur. Alabama ranked 19th nationally in value of nonfuel minerals produced. Cement, clays, lime, sand and gravel, and stone were the major commodities produced.

The Bureau of Mines, under Congressional mandate, conducted a mineral survey on the Park Range WSA (Wilderness Study Area) in 1984 and 1985. The WSA, located about midway between Tonopah and Ely, encompasses 47,268 acres. No mineral resources were delineated, nor were workings found, during the investigation. There has been, however, exploration in and near the north end of the study area. ASARCO is actively exploring a block of 41 claims for hot-spring type, low-grade, large-tonnage gold deposits. Their claim block is almost entirely in the study area. The Morey mining district, 7 miles southwest of the study area, produced silver and lesser amounts of gold and lead sporadically from the mid-1860&apos;s through the mid-1960&apos;s. The WSA is underlain by Tertiary rhyolitic and latitic volcanic rocks and by Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The Paleozoic rocks have been faulted, silicified, brecciated, and hydrothermally altered, and have anomalous concentrations of precious metals and pathfinder elements. Additional exploration in the north part of the Park Range WSA may lead to delineation of gold resources.

An analysis of coal slurry pipelines was presented in our May 1976 study, Route Specific Cost Comparisons: Unit Trains, Coal Slurry Pipelines and Extra High Voltage Transmission (4]. The present study extends that analysis. The earlier work included technical and economic cost descriptions of the black Mesa and ETSI pipelines as well as some hypothetical pipeline routes. Water problems, safety and environment, required resources, and labor impacts were discussed at some length. Additionally, pipeline impacts on competing railroads, slurry-rail comparisons, and cost escalation. were analyzed. The difference in pipeline profitability to an owner-operator versus a promoter-builder was suggested. These aspects are not redone in this study. Here, we present a synopsis of the previous results and a general statement of coal slurry pipelines. Extensions of the arguments are presented where they appear warranted. New material is developed in the area of pipeline branching and tapping. This would appear necessary if slurry pipelines are to function as more than private lines; if they are, for example, to be responsive to common carrier requirements.

Assessment of workplace exposures is an important tool for helping to minimize dust-related occupational illness and diseases. Real-time particulate monitoring can effectively locate areas where dust controls are needed and determine how well they are working. An affordable, person-wearable, real-time dust monitor is needed. The SKC Inc. Dust Detective (SKCDD) fulfills those requirements (Disclaimer: Mention of any company or product does not imply endorsement by NIOSH). The SKCDD consists of a disposable sampling tube (DST) connected to a small hand-held sampling pump. The SKCDD was developed through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and SKC Inc. The relationship of dust concentrations measured by personal gravimetric samplers to those measured by the SKCDD was determined in a laboratory aerosol chamber. A comparison of the means and the relative standard deviation of triplicate measurements of each type of sampling device demonstrated the SKCDD to be a viable alternative means for measuring dust. While it provides accurate measurements for specific coal types, it requires correction factors (those correction factors still need to be calculated) for other coal types.

This study concerns itself with the effects of diesel exhaust on mine ventilation systems. The approach here consisted of the development of mathematical models for emissions, dilution, and dispersion of gaseous pollutants from diesels. The general scheme was to use partial differential equations to predict concentration growths. Specifically, the following situations were modeled: 1. A single stationary diesel engine working in a single roadway. 2. A single diesel engine moving with uniform velocity in a single roadway. 3. Multiple diesel engines moving continuously in a cycle in a roadway with appreciable leakage. 4 Multiple diesel engines moving continuously in a cycle in a roadway with little or no leakage. 5. Multiple diesel engines moving randomly in a roadway with uniform air velocity.

The Bureau of Mines Contract No. H0101706 with Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University was a part of a broad-scale investigation directed toward applied problems in mine safety and particularly toward preventing accidents and fatalities resulting from falls of roof and ribs in coal mines. Under the auspices of the Chemical Stabilization Program, Bureau of Mines, Spokane Mining Research Center, Spokane, Washington, the broad objective of the Contract was to conduct research for the purpose of studying the behavior of large engineering structures. Contract No. H0101706 consisted of two related but distinct tasks. TASK I was to make "Barodynamic Analysis of Large Mine Models," and TASK II was "Preparation of Undisturbed Rock Specimens.?

This paper describes the methods of mining and washing brown iron are in 1957 at the Sawyer mine, leased by Wayne County Mining Co., and the Fore mine, leased by Four Mining Co., both in southern Missouri; it is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on mining and milling methods and costs in various districts of the United States. The Sawyer mine is in Wayne County, about 10 miles north-northeast of Williamsville (fig. 1); the Fore mine is in Howell County, about 20 miles southwest of West Plains (fig. 2). Both are open-pit mines from which the crude are was upgraded by washing and hand-sorting to produce are of grade and quality suitable for sale to operators of iron and steel furnaces. The operations described are typical of many others that produce or have produced marketable brown iron are from small sedimentary deposits, several hundred of which outcrop on the crests or hill sides of southern Missouri (fig. 3). The 1957 production of marketable brown iron are by 40 separate operations in the southern part of the State was 281,427 wet long tons, valued at $1,637,243. Production from the Sawyer mine that year was 17,000 dry long tons of washed are, and from the Fore mine, 20,816 dry long tons.
