The slags produced in copper smelting are largely composed of silica and ferrous oxide and may therefore be regarded as essentially ferrous silicates. A fair amount of information is available on the constitutions of the liquid slags used in copper smelting and, in this connection, the large volume of work being carried out on steelmaking slags should be helpful. Constitutional diagrams are available for most of the principal systems involved (SiO2-FeO; SiO2-FeO-Al2O 3; SiO2-FeO-CaO; SiO2-FeO- MgO; and SiO2-FeO-CaO-Al2O3) and these show that additions of Al2O3 and CaO reduce the freezing points of SiO2-FeO slags but that additions of MgO increase the freezing point. A certain amount of information is available on the thermodynamics of slags, but much further work on this subject is required. Modern theories of the constitution of liquid slags deny the existence of molecular compounds but consider that liquid slags are mixtures of various ions such as, Fe2+. O2- and SiO4(4-). The economic growth of Hong Kong and adjacent territories in Southern China is, to a considerable extent, dependant on air transportation, but the present Kai Tak Airport is incapable of expansion to meet future needs. After years of study, agreement was reached to build a new airport on the island of Chek Lap Kok, some 34 km remote from Hong Kong, with an ultimate capacity of 87M passengers and 8.9 Ml of cargo per annum. Apart from the building of the airport and its associated infrastructure (including a new town), other similar massive construction works have been necessary in the form of land reclamation from the sea and existing outer lying islands. The construction of bridges, tunnels, railways and highways are also an integral part of the project. The paper provides a broad overview of the concepts of the scheme (called The Airport Core Programme) and highlights some of the major operations and equipment being used in the projects, whose cost at 1992 prices was reckoned to he Hong Kong (HR)$l63hn.

A study of the thermodynamic properties of magnesium chloride ammines was carried out with the ultimate objective that the thermal decomposition of the hexammine MgCl2.6NH3 may prove successful on a commercial scale for the manufacture of anhydrous magnesium chloride, which is required for the efficient electrolytic production of magnesium. The experimental data are presented in the form of an equilibrium diagram that aids the understanding of the conditions associated with the thermal decomposition of ammines

Equations for calculating the parameters of controlled blasting (burden and spacing of boreholes and weight of the bottom charge) are derived and analysed on the basis of empirical values and made more precise through incorporation of the properties of the rock being blasted and explosive applied. For the success of controlled blasting the correct choice of the blasthole diameter/charge diameter ratio is critical. This relation is defined as the coefficient of radial decoupling of the charge; it is recommended that it is chosen to be between 3 and 3.5. Analysis of smooth blasting, cushion blasting and presplitting indicates that cushion blasting is a less destructive alternative to smooth blasting, but it has a slightly higher blasthole consumption and limited possibilities of use. There are definite economic advantages to controlled blasting, especially in rock masses of low and medium strength

Spessartine-quartz rocks are manganiferous sedimentary rocks rich in spessartine and quartz which occur in north-central New Brunswick. They represent a recrystallised manganiferous siltstone/chert that is contained in or associated with red manganiferous siltstone (RMS) units. The spessartine-quartz rocks and RMS form part of an Ordovician volcanic and sedimentary succession within the Appalachian-Caledonian orogen which hosts numerous massive sulphides and polymetallic vein deposits. The New Brunswick spessartine-quartz rocks are spatially and temporally associated with stratiform base-metal, precious metal and hydrothermal tin-tungsten deposits. This suggests that spessartine-bearing lithologies and zones can be useful in predictive metallogeny and for the understanding of the stratigraphy and palaeographic setting of the early Palaeozoic rocks of the Appalachian-Caledonian orogen.

Botswana's mining industry value is forecast to average 5.2% growth from 2014-2018 with solid growth for the diamond sector and acceleration of coal production. Respect for the country's mining regime is maintained in the Fraser Institute 2014 annual survey where Botswana occupies the 26th position of 122 administrations. The following procedure was used to determine cut-off grades: define the orebody profile; plan the stope layout and quantify the work involved; formulate equipment-performance norms; calculate unit costs; input process recoveries and metal prices; and calculate the cut-off grade. Use of the method is illustrated using data from a copper mining complex in India. Results from the study led to the following conclusions for underground mines in general. Cut-off dependent costs vary significantly with the stoping method employed, orebody thickness, the degree of mechanisation and the working efficiencies of the workforce and equipment. This applies even within the same deposit. Sub-level stoping and its variants can be operated at a lower cut-off grade than cut-and-fill and its variants. Thinner orebodies affect cut-off grades adversely, but with thinner orebodies very little further reduction in cut-off grade can be achieved once a certain minimum width has been exceeded. For the same stoping method and in the same mine the cut-off grade varies with the degree of mechanisation. Labour-intensive methods require higher cut-off grades. An allowance for working efficiency should be made when calculating cut-off grades. Higher process recoveries allow a significant lowering of cut-off grades

A description is given of a method of analysing modern mining systems in terms of reliability and their effects on productivity. Non-exponential distributions, such as the Weibull and lognormal distributions, for failure and equipment repair times are also considered. The resulting non-homogeneous Markov process is solved by the method of stages. A longwall mining system is analysed as an example.

After a brief description of the causes of spontaneous heating and of general preventative methods, a detailed account is given of occurrences of spontaneous heating in the Main Seam (locally known as the 5/4 Seam) at Westoe Colliery. This seam is about 12 feet thick consisting of hands of coal and shale, but only 4 feet 6 inches is worked because of the thickness os strata in water-bearing rocks and the worked section is selected on quality considerations. An advancing longwall face in this seam (2nd South) began to heat after working for six months and ultimately had to be abandoned. By adopting retreating methods and mining narrow panels it has been possible to extract this coal at an excellent rate of productivity. The system of goaf ventilation is important, because the use of a bleed road would have given rise to dangerous conditions in a goaf which of necessity would have contained fallen coal. Preparatory seals were prepared at selected sites so that, if necessary, a panel could be sealed off quickly; these seals are completed as soon as possible (within three weeks) of finishing a panel. A gas sampling system has been instituted which includes daily sampling on the face and in the goaf, and weekly sampling at the stoppings of all completed panels. The coal has now been extracted from this seam for three years without any further difficulties from spontaneous heating.

Physical modelling of liquid-phase oxygen mass transfer in a water model of part of a proposed new polymetallic smelter has been achieved. A study of solute mass transfer caused by multiple, subsonic air jets contacting superoxygenated water flowing in a channel model of the smelter converting hearth has been carried out. For a wide range of channel flow rates the rate of mass transfer was found to be independent of water velocity. The water model has been used to compare mass transfer for both open-packed and close-packed multiple-lance arrays with circular nozzles of diameters 2.26, 4.95, 10.95 and 24.40 mm. It was found that with fewer of the larger-diameter nozzles a reduction of up to 58% in liquid-phase mass transfer occurred, especially for the close-packed lance configurations. This restriction of liquid-phase mass transfer would result in reduced metal losses in the analogous smelting situation. The larger nozzles, however, exhibited more jet-jet and jet-channel wall interference effects than their smaller counterparts, resulting in an effective reduction in the momentum fluxes of the impinging jets

Australia has large reserves of pisolitic limonite. Mining recently commenced on the Yandicoogina deposit to produce a high-grade sintering ore. The ore contains about 10 wt% combined water and simulated sintering temperature profiles indicate that progressive dehydration of ore particles occurs in the temperature range 300-700 degrees C. Studies by optical microscopy show that although the dehyrdrated ore particles contain numerous cracks, there is no change in the microstructure of the ore because topotactic transformation to haematite results in the formation of compact masses of very fine-grained haematite microcrysts. When the ore is held at around 1 200 degrees C for 1 min significant recrystallisation of these microcrysts occurs, resulting in the formation of optically visible, micrometre sized haematite crystallites. Studies to simulate the behaviour of ore particles during sintering (as nuclear particles surrounded by a standard adhering fines mixture) show that the recrystallisation process occurs much earlier at temperatures of about 900 degrees C. Further studies indicate that CaO in the adhering fines mixture enhances the recrystallisation of the ore nuclei. The results of the investigation indicate that the pseudo-relict haematite in sinters produced from ore blends that contain significant levels of pisolitic limonite consists of dehydrated goethite that has undergone significant recrystallisation and grain growth, a phenomenon that is facilitated by the presence of lime derived from the sintering melt.

The paper traces the pattern of spontaneous combustion in the workings of what was originally Hemsworth Colliery, but since July 1967 is now part of South Kirby Colliery. Examination is made of the Barnsley Seam sections and the part played by the top section of the seam as it comes in close proximity to the main seam. In this area of the colliery nine mechanised faces were set away between the years 1953 and 1968, every one "fired" at the pillar edge and six "fired" at the face line when production had ceased. The paper deals with the different preventative measures used, from sandbag walls, cement injections, spraying with polyurethane, until finally using Mandoseal as a sealant. Since the latter method was first used, the last three faces worked in this particular area were all salvaged completely, without any sign of a heating developing.

Smelter-grade alumina is usually produced by the calcination of gibbsite. The ideal energy requirements for the calcination of gibbsite have been analysed and compared with the actual energy consumption of some industrial calcination processes. The consumption of most of these is considerably in excess of the ideal. Methods suggested for calcining dry gibbsite feeds which claim energy savings of 10-14% consume 26-34% more than the ideal energy requirement for dry feeds. This study indicates that it should be possible to recover appreciably more energy, giving further improvements in fuel efficiency, both in existing gibbsite calcination processes and in methods that have been proposed for the stagewise calcination of dry gibbsite

For conventional aerospace aluminium alloys of the 2000 (copper) and 7000 (zinc, magnesium) series the recycling of process scrap from both metal suppliers and aircraft manufacturers is a well-established, worldwide industry. The recent introduction of a new family of alloys that incorporates lithium has posed a new challenge to the recycling industry owing to the high cost of lithium, its high reactivity to the atmosphere and to refractories and its absence from the specifications of all other registered alloys. Various process options for recycling have been identified, but vacuum distillation has been selected as the most cost-effective and technically feasible solution. Experimental work established that the separation of Li from AI-Li scrap is feasible and an industrial process has been designed. The economics of Li recovery are very sensitive to the AI-Li content of the feed material. Owing to the design of aerospace vehicle manufacturing plants it is expected that the swarf will be mixed with other alloys. A method of enriching this feed has been developed that is based on the control of swarf morphology by thermal and mechanical treatments as a precursor to eddy-current separation. After eddy-current separation and vacuum distillation small proportions of Li are retained in the AI residue. The effects of this on the properties of conventional AI-Si shape-casting alloys were investigated and safe threshold levels have been established.
