"Deep Mixing Method (DMM) for the Rio Puerto Nuevo Project (Project) in San Juan was chosen by the Corps of Engineers to improve the soils adjacent to a 92 inch ID forced sewer main relocation and to improve the soils for the base of a new drainage channel. The soils to be improved consisted of sandy fill, soft clays, organics and stiff, plastic clays. A pre-construction soil investigation campaign, followed by a Bench Scale Mixing Programme and a Full Scale Field Test were performed during the pre-construction stage to assess soil properties, select binder type and dosage, and disclose the most suitable combination of injection parameters to improve the different soil layers. Production started at the end of August 2012 and was completed in October 2013; over 3,000 DMM elements were installed to a maximum depth of 57 ft below ground for a total gross volume of approximately 125,000 cubic yard. Each element consisted of two 5.5 ft diameter overlapping columns installed simultaneously, and their layout was such to meet the 100% Area Replacement Ratio required by the design. The ground improvement was successfully completed despite some difficulties due to a considerable amount of obstructions. Wet grab sampling and UCS testing of the retrieved specimens were designed as the main QC/QA method for the verification of the quality of the ground improvement. Upon completion of production, approximately 3,000 specimens were cast. The contract also required continuous coring of at least 12 randomly selected DMM elements and the testing of 8 cored specimens per bore for strength assessment. This paper will illustrate means and methods used in the field to construct the designed ground improvement and the results of the QC/QA program, with a focus on the differences between wet grab and coring sampling methods.INTRODUCTIONThe Rio Puerto Nuevo project involved the stabilization of a major drainage channel using the Deep Mixing Method (DMM), and the relocation of a 92 inch ID forced main sanitary sewer outfall. Previously, in 2004, a 40 x 16 x 2,000 ft. box culvert was installed under a different contract to convey runoff waters to the ocean.However, the connection between this culvert and the upstream network of channels was not constructed due to the presence of the forced main sewer pipe. In order for the drainage system to be completed and function properly, the 92 inch ID forced main needed to be lowered about 20 ft to allow for proper drainage.DMM was chosen by the US Army Corps of Engineers to stabilize the drainage channel as well as improve the soil under the relocated sewer main. The DMM was arranged in different zones (A through E) with variable top and bottom design elevations as can be seen in the typical cross section for Zone A (deeper and with a higher strength requirement) and Zone B as an example (Figure 1)."

"Pile response under combined uplift and lateral load is very important and it is imperative to evaluate the effect of combined loading and only few studies were reported on pile behavior under combined uplift and lateral loads. Model pile made-up of aluminum having an outer and inner diameter of 25.4 mm and 19.4 mm respectively is used. Dimensions of the model steel tank are fixed as 1.0 m x1.0 m x 1.2 m (depth) to avoid the boundary effects under combined lateral and uplift loads. Experiments were carried out on single piles at isolated uplift, isolated lateral loading and combined lateral and uplift loading, embedded in sandy soil. Results indicate that load–deflection behavior is nonlinear for isolated uplift and lateral load tests as well as in case of combined loadings. It is also observed that the behavior of piles under isolated loadings is substantially different when compared to combined loading.INTRODUCTIONPile foundations are generally used to support compressive loads from superstructures. Some structures, like transmission towers, mooring systems for ocean surface or submerged platforms, tall chimneys, jetty structures, etc. are constructed on pile foundations, which have to resist large lateral and uplift loads and moments. The various loads (compressive, lateral and uplift) and moments act on the piles simultaneously rather than isolated manner. There are well-established theoretical methods present to evaluate the pile behaviour under different isolated loadings namely, verticalcompressive, vertical-uplift and lateral (Poulos and Davis, 1980), but there are very limited studies focused on pile behaviour under combined loadings. Though there is good number of studies reported on pile behaviour under combined compressive-lateral and compressive-uplift loadings (Ramasamy, 1974; Jain et al. 1987; Zhang and Small, 1999; Dash and Pise, 2003; Karthigeyan et al. 2006 & 2007; , there are only very few studies reported on pile behaviour under combined uplift and lateral loads. Darr et al. (1990) described an approach to a rational solution of the interaction of pile to combined uplift and lateral loads based on analytical and experimental studies. Influence of cyclic loading was also considered. Narasimha Rao and Prasad (1993) investigated the uplift behaviour of pile anchors subjected to lateral cyclic loading. There were many onshore and offshore situations where lateral cyclic loading may affect both the pullout and lateral loading capacity of pile anchors. Jetty and wharf structures are usually subjected to lateral forces from wave and wind action. If these cyclic lateral loads are acting on the supporting piles, the resulting movement of the upper part of the embedded length of pile may reduce the skin friction. This progressive deterioration in pullout resistance may not be reflected by a pullout test made soon after the installation. Hence, Tomlinson and Woodward (2008) pointed out that a generous safety factor on the ultimate pullout load should be adopted for piles in such situations. Mroueh and Shahrour (2007, 2008) presented a threedimensional finite element analysis of the response of battered piles to the combined lateral and vertical pullout loads. Nevertheless, the model is not validated well due to lack of good experimental data based on rigorous experiments. Thus there is a scope for investigating the effect of lateral load on pile behaviour under uplift load and vice versa based on carefully designed experiments, which is main focus of the present investigation."

This paper presents the performance of nineteen open-ended steel pipe piles driven through highly variable overburden soils into glacial till and schist bedrock. The piles were 16 inches in diameter and 0.656 inches thick, with yield strength of 50 ksi. The piles were designed for a service capacity of 250 kips and were driven to achieve an ultimate geotechnical capacity of at least 500 kips. Due to the large variation in the ground conditions, installed pile lengths ranged from 25 to 66 feet. Some piles were driven to refusal on the bedrock while others were terminated at final driving resistance of 2 to 7 blows/in. Two piles were suspected to be plugged during driving while others did not. Each pile was instrumented with strain gages and accelerometers near the pile top, and observed using a Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) to provide preliminary guidance on pile capacity achieved at end of initial drive (EOID). The influence of plugged and unplugged pile toe conditions on the interpretation of pile capacity was investigated using Case Pile Wave Analysis Program (CAPWAP). Characteristics of driving energy, compressive and tensile stresses developed in the steel pipe piles, and the resulting pile deformation behavior are discussed. INTRODUCTION The Hunters Point South redevelopment in Long Island City, Queens is one of New York City’s major efforts to transform former manufacturing zones into mixed developments for the middle-income community. The site is located along the eastern shoreline of the East River and Newtown Creek. The development included low to high-rise residential buildings, a public school and retail structures. Open spaces were created along the East River and Newtown Creek waterfronts in the form of a continuous park providing for recreational and community related activities. Waterfront structures included small park buildings, walkways and viewing platforms with the shoreline protected by revetments as part of the City’s flood mitigation strategy. The project was implemented in two phases, with completion of construction for Phase 1 in 2013 and Phase 2 in 2019. Based on available historical information, extensive reclamation took place between 1855 and 1898. After 1951, changes to the shoreline were made along the East River, including the removal of reclaimed land along the northern portion of the project site to allow for docking facilities. By 1977, these facilities had been demolished and backfilled to form the current shoreline configuration. The present site was temporarily used as a parking lot with stockpiles of fill mixed with construction demolition rubble, rip-rap and boulders of varying heights across the site. The existing ground surface varied significantly up to approximately 25 feet difference in elevation. The stockpiles were removed and the site was re-graded during final development of the project. This paper discusses the foundation design challenges due to the loose overburden soils and potential obstructions within the fill material, in particular, the issues relating to installation of open-ended steel pipe piles through the ground conditions encountered on site.

Soil setup analysis provides opportunities for efficiencies in pile foundation design and installation. Soil setup gain with time was evaluated as part of the foundation design and installation for twelve bridges along the Interstate 64 corridor between York County and Newport News in Virginia. The substructure elements of the bridges consist of driven precast prestressed concrete piles or H-piles. This case study describes lessons learned to understand the soil setup phenomenon during the installation of the piles in coastal plain. We were able to make expedited decisions during construction by analyzing previously performed pile dynamic analyzer (PDA) test results within the project alignment. Data evaluation included analyses of PDA data obtained from initial driving and restrike after a few hours to 5 weeks. The test data showed pile resistance increase up to twice in most cases and as high as four times in some cases. Foundation design and acceptance based on soil setup can provide opportunities for cost savings and advanced scheduling during construction.

Bangalore Metro Rail Project- phase II is one of the technological challenging project, particularly construction of underground metro rail system. The Bengaluru city is very congested area and connecting metro rail system with existing transportation networks is equally challenging. In this phase-II, the Underground metro is being constructed by blasting hard rock formation and supporting the shear zone. Most of the subsurface rock formations comprise of granitic Gneissic formations are of Precambrian age and shear zones that includes friable a thin weathered rock formation. With such subsurface geological conditions, , the anticipated construction challenges include : A) deep excavation of hard rock mass under old and sensitive structures and buildings, by controlled blasting; B) variation in the rock grade from grade I to grade V; C) weak rock mass at shear zone resulted in planar failure beneath the retaining wall; D) water seepage along shear planes; E) selection of a suitable method to conducted blasting near high voltage electrical machinery or power cables. This paper describes the methods adopted to mitigate these technological challenges and to meet stringent environmental compliances. These includes study and application of various geological, geotechnical parameters to develop a proper line drilling and controlled blasting techniques to minimize the ground vibrations and controlling the rock fragmentation and to optimize the equipment performance in terms of productivity and time schedules. The “Phase 2” software of “Rocscience” has been used and Regression analysis has been carried out by using MCD (Maximum Charge per Delay) and PPV (Peak Particle Velocity) to estimate with FOS (Factor of safety) for sensitive places such as nearby high rise buildings and electrical transformers.re.

"The ongoing expansion of the Oak Creek Power Plant in Oak Creek, Wisc., includes a tunnel bored in rock that connects to four vertical intake shafts approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) offshore in Lake Michigan. In 2004, Case Foundation Company was awarded a lump sum contract to install these intake shafts. In spite of delays that shortened the May to September construction season by up to 50%, four shafts and liner assemblies were drilled in 2005 and 2006. The shafts were connected to the tunnel in 2007 by mining upward to reach the lower portion of each liner and then removing its internal bulkheads so that lake water fl owed into the tunnel. The project is one of the largest private construction projects ever undertaken in Wisconsin. The expansion adds 1,230 megawatts of generation. In addition to the tunnel and offshore work, there will be 16 miles (26 km) of railroad track and 6 million cubic yards (4,600,000 m3) of earth work. The 27 ft (8.2 m) diameter tunnel, drilled some 150 ft (46 m) below the surface of Lake Michigan, originates onshore at a pump house. A structural slurry wall was constructed as the foundation for the pump house. The tunnel passes to the south near the current water intake before bearing east toward the new offshore intake shafts, which are 12 ft (3.6 m) diameter by 108 ft (33 m) long steel liner assemblies. These were grouted in place from approximately 3 ft (1 m) above the crown of the intake tunnel and then to 20 ft (6 m) below the lake bottom.Site GeologyOffshore. The plant site is north of the Racine-Milwaukee county line in an area affected by glacial activity. The soil conditions encountered at each shaft location were consistent, with noticeable variations occurring in the top of rock elevations that sloped downward from the innermost to the outermost shaft."

Marine environments present a range of challenges for pile construction. This paper contains a discussion on the design and construction of marine piles for a recent Toll Shipping wharf upgrade in Burnie, Tasmania. The project involved several new structures including mooring, berthing and ramp dolphins supported by driven tubular piles with rock sockets, and an onshore mooring dolphin and ramp abutment supported by bored piles. Through the project, a range of construction challenges were experienced, including availability of tubular piles, the different penetration depths of driven piles into rock, the ability to drill out sockets when the piles were raked, the difficulty in verifying the design intent, latent conditions and ship impacts. The paper will present a summary of the different factors that influenced design concepts for the structures involved in the upgrade, and the challenges involved in the design of the structures. Following this, the paper will describe the methodology used to verify the design (including a pullout test), observations made during pile construction and lessons learned on how to limit risk throughout construction.

"Coal transported by rail for Thermal Power Plant in Haldia, West Bengal, India, was to be received and stored in Coal Complex comprising of Wagon Tippler, Track Hopper, Junction Houses and network of horizontal and inclined tunnels. The site was very soft with high ground water level. Deep excavation and dewatering posed great difficulty. Original plan was to drive about 1000 m of steel sheet pile and well sinking which had major impact on cost and time. High ground water was identified as the main problem. Controlling water level and maintaining it would allow open excavation over major areas. Scheme for lowering aquifer with one and two-stage well-point dewatering system was developed following basic principles of groundwater and seepage. Arrangements of wells, installation and pumping were worked out in detail. Water levels could be lowered below bottom levels of excavation. Design of sheet pile was modified under lowered ground water condition. Overall length and depth of sheet pile were reduced drastically. Open excavation was possible in segments over major areas. The scheme was highly successful in smooth and fast progress of underground works. The works were completed safely months ahead of schedule time and with significant saving in cost.INTRODUCTIONThe Coal Receiving Complex of thermal power plant comprised of 250 m long 8 m deep Track Hopper (TH), 12 m deep Wagon Tippler (WT) with provision for addition of another Wagon Tippler. Track center lines of TH and WT were very close. Coal unloading facilities were connected with a network of underground tunnels and Transfer Points (TP) upto Pent House (PH). The facilities were optimized in a compact layout within about 400 m x 120 m area. Initially excavation for TH was started adopting side slope of (1 V : 1.5 H) with 2 m wide berm and dewatering by in-pit sump and pump. When depth of excavation reached about 5-6 m, failure occurred over a long stretch as shown in Figs. 1a - 1b photos. Further work was stopped to develop scheme for carrying out deep excavation and civil works safely."

"The Oxford Hydroelectric Station was a unique project that incorporated a variety of dam strengthening methods to stabilize the facility in order to meet the standards required by Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The dam stability and Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) remediation work consisted of (1) construction of a new emergency spillway; (2) installation of 75 high capacity rock anchors; (3) construction of an anchored concrete powerhouse buttress; (4) construction of cast-in-place and sheetpile flood walls; and (5) design and construction of a permanent soil nail wall. INTRODUCTIONThe Oxford Hydroelectric Station is one of 11 hydroelectric facilities owned and operated by Duke Power along the Catawba/Wateree River. The Catawba River originates in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains just west of Morganton, North Carolina. The river flows east out of the mountains and, at a point just below the Oxford Dam, the Catawba River turns and heads southeast. The Catawba River continues to flow southeast past Charlotte and into South Carolina where it eventually becomes the Wateree River. The Wateree River eventually flows in to the Atlantic Ocean.Located a few miles east of Hickory, North Carolina, the Oxford Dam and Hydroelectric facility is in the upper reach of the Catawba River. Oxford Dam creates the third impoundment along the river known as Lake Hickory. Lake Hickory is well known locally for providing many outdoor activities such as boating, jet skiing, canoeing and fishing. The dam and powerhouse were put into operation in the spring of 1928.Key features of the dam include a short embankment section on the south end of the structure, a 391-foot (119m) long south bulkhead and powerhouse, 540-foot (165m) long gated spillway section and a 235-foot (71.6m) long north bulkhead. The maximum height of the dam is approximately 100-feet (30m) from the crest to the dam/rock interface. (See Figure 1).The work associated with this project is the result of licensing requirements of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) which mandates that all hydroelectric facilities have the capacity to safely discharge runoff created by a critical rainfall event defined as the probable maximum flood (PMF). Duke Power, a division of Duke Energy (DUKE) submitted an initial PMF report in 1992 which indicated that at the Oxford Dam would be overtopped by approximately 10-feet of water during the modeled PMF event. Given the duration and depth of the overtopping, significant damage to the facility and a possible breach could result. Therefore, modifications to the existing facility were necessary to satisfy the report of the PMF model."

Urban and industrial construction projects commonly involve interior work within buildings, warehouses and manufacturing facilities. Renovations of these existing structures must address both structural and geotechnical engineering challenges while also balancing the practicality of implementing solutions within site constraints including limited site access, overhead clearance restrictions, vibration tolerances and uninterrupted facility operations. This paper highlights two projects for an international shipping company where mezzanine level additions within active shipping facilities required construction of new foundations. Construction requirements included low vibration levels, as well as rapid and clean installation to limit impacts on the active shipping operations. The selected system also needed to adjust to both variable ground conditions and differing overhead clearances. This paper describes the installation, design and performance of Ductile Iron Piles used to meet the project challenges. The low vibration, driven pile system offered the ability to work within restricted overhead environments while successfully delivering working compression capacities ranging from 45 to 75 tons (41 to 68 tonnes) as well as lateral and tension resistance. The paper also presents the results of site-specific load testing (and pile capacity) for various termination criteria. "In November 2004, the residents of the City of Nanaimo, B.C., Canada voted to approve a new conference centre as the centrepiece of a proposed revitalization project for the city’s historic downtown core. The proposal goal was to replace a cluster of derelict buildings with a dynamic and modern complex that would connect existing city facilities to a new conference facility, the Vancouver Island Conference Centre (VICC). The conference centre is expected to create 150 full-time jobs, attract visitors/ delegates from across North America and generate new economic opportunities for local businesses.However, the proposed site posed a number of geotechnical and geoenvironmental challenges. As is often the case with coastal cities, historic growth of the Nanaimo downtown and harbour area was achieved through reclamation of former waterfront areas and inlets. These areas were often infilled with random fills and even wastes, leaving a legacy of variable density heterogeneous fills contaminated with a variety of pollutants. Preliminary assessment of the site indicated a high likelihood of a requirement for deep foundations, a high risk of liquefaction in the event of an earthquake and the presence of both soil and groundwater contamination. Construction would be further complicated by the requirement for two levels of basement parking and the proximity of adjacent buildings and major roadways to the work area.With a limited budget (fixed by the referendum) and timeframe, the city needed a cost-effective solution to proceed with construction. A number of options were considered, but an innovative design using leading-edge Cutter Soil Mixer (CSM) technology best met the geotechnical and budgetary requirements of the site. The CSM approach also addressed the environmental concerns of contaminated soils and groundwater. Golder Associates Innovative Applications (GAIA) Inc., in association with the designers of their parent company Golder Associates Ltd. (Golder), proposed the CSM technology — at the time the first North American application."

"Construction of a new tailings dam was required to increase tailings storage capacity at a trona mine near Green River, Wyoming. The new dam was founded on overburden soils underlain by both fractured and competent bedrock. The stored tailings and water had high salt content, resulting in salty seepage water. To reduce the impact of the salty water on groundwater and the Green River, the design of the new tailings dam included a 257,260 SF (23,900 m2) seepage cutoff extending into competent rock.An extensive subsurface characterization was performed prior to completing the design and suitable seepage cutoff methods were evaluated. The approach selected was a full replacement panel using hydromill and clamshell for construction and self-hardening slurry (SHS) for the wall material. Laboratory testing was performed and ongoing monitoring has continued to evaluate the hydraulic conductivity and seepage cutoff performance in the briny environment.The paper includes project background, the collaborative approach and outcomes of the QA/QC program, and the monitoring results for the seepage cutoff wall.PROJECT BACKGROUNDCiner Wyoming, LLC (formerly OCI Wyoming, LLC) owns and operates the Big Island Mine facility near Green River, Wyoming. This underground trona mine has produced soda ash since 1962. The Greater Green River Basin covers much of southwestern Wyoming and extends into northeastern Utah and northwestern Colorado. The Ciner facility is located in the Green River Basin, which is part of the Wyoming Basin physiographic province. The Green River runs to the west and the south of the Ciner facility.Beginning in the early 1990s, Ciner primarily disposed tailings underground in mined-out panels. However, in recent years, underground storage has become limited and some disposal has transitioned to the ground surface. Long-term planning revealed a need to expand Ciner’s surface tailings disposal capabilities. Pond 2, a previously permitted disposal area, was identified as the most viable location for a storage facility. The Pond 2 site is directly north of the Ciner plant facilities, northwest of the active Upper Delta tailings storage facility, and northeast of the Green River (Fig 1)."

"Rhode Island’s new $163.7 million, 2,265 ft (690 m) long, four-lane Sakonnet River Bridge sits just south of the existing bridge in Portsmouth/Tiverton. The bridge, a critical transportation system link between Massachusetts and Rhode Island, has a steel I-girder main span and concrete New England Bulb Tee approach spans. The foundation work was done between October 2009 and July 2010, and the bridge was completed in February 2014.Foundation design and construction challenges make the project noteworthy. There were thick layers of silty glacial soils with bedrock as deep as 400 ft (122 m) below the waterline, coupled with high foundation capacity demands at the river piers in 50 ft (15 m) of water. The Sakonnet was one of the first major bridge projects in the country to incorporate AASHTO Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) guidelines for foundation design and construction. Because of these and other challenges, the engineers conducted two design-phase load test programs on several foundation elements. These programs were successful and allowed the engineers to adjust the final foundation design prior to the start of construction. During construction, the contractors drove thirty 6 ft (1.8 m) diameter steel pipe piles, each with a novel recessed steel plate insert, to depths of 130 to 200 ft (40 to 61 m) at the three river piers. The insert provided increased resistance of the steel pipe piles and saved about $9 million. Also, 457 14x117 en bearing or friction H-section piles were driven to between 50 and 190 ft (15 to 58 m) at five land piers. All piles were driven relatively close to the existing bridge, which remained in service during construction, due to the project team’s precautionary use of instrumentation and the installation of a jacking system.Area GeologyThe Sakonnet River is up to 60 ft (18 m) deep along the bridge alignment and is underlain by a deep bedrock valley. The bedrock valley is buried by at least 350 ft (107 m) of soil, which includes a complex sequence of interbedded glacial soils (glacial till, glaciolacustrine deposits and glaciofluvial deposits), overlain by geologically recent estuarine deposits. The soils having the greatest impact on the foundation resistance are the glaciolacustrine (fine sandy silt or silt) and glaciofluvial (silty sand with gravel, cobbles, and occasional boulders less than about 2.5 ft [0.8 m] in size). The soil overburden decreases toward the east and west banks of the river, as the bedrock surface rises."

The Middle East consists of vast deserts that reach temperatures up to 50 degrees Celsius, with some areas characterized by endless sand dunes. When the project team selected the location for a large new transportation project, little did they know that the site would be characterized by soft, nearly normally consolidated silt and clay extending below a thin sand crust. Searching for solutions, the design team elected to reinforce the subsurface with Rammed Aggregate Pier® (RAP) ground improvement elements and desired verification that the novel method would stand the test of prolonged static loads. Because the concrete pavements would serve to spread the load, a “zone load test” was performed, consisting of applying a uniform bearing pressure of 150 kPa over a 7.5m square concrete footing. Unlike individual pier load tests, the zone test allowed the project engineers the opportunity to confirm design parameter values under large-loading area conditions, a situation not often available to most designers. This paper presents the results of the zone load test whose results may be interpreted to better understand design parameter values. This paper is of particular significance because it adds a value contribution to the relatively few numbers of “group load tests” available in the literature for ground improvement applications.

"The remotely located Cockatoo Island iron ore mine off the Kimberly coast in Western Australia, which has been in operation since 1951, was recently expanded up to 50m below sea-level using staged construction of a rock-filled seawall around the open cut mining operation. The most recent stage of the seawall expansion required a seepage reducing cut-off barrier to be installed through the seawall into underlying seabed sediments. A line of grout holes at 1m centres was proposed to form the seepage barrier, with grouting extending 17m below the top of the seawall. Top hammer drilling techniques were used to penetrate the 12m deep rockfill to seabed level, and permeation grouting carried out within the rockfill to fill voids and stabilise material around grout holes. The local 10m tides meant that tidal washout of fines and grout would be a major risk, and so a combination of cementitious and chemical grout was used to create rapid gel times. Following permeation grouting, holes were re-opened to allow jet grouting to hydraulically mix and grout permeable seabed sediments below the seawall. Using the duplex jet grout system in a single pass to 17m below platform level, the jet grouting was extended upwards into the seawall fill itself to overlap with the earlier permeation grouting. Finally a soil/cement mixed capping trench was installed using slurry trenching techniques with soil/cement/bentonite mixed backfill in order to complete the grout treatment. The approach taken allowed considerable onsite flexibility in technique. An automated slurry batching plant allowed adjustment of mixes to suit the varying subsurface conditions which were encountered during the works.IntroductionLate in 2013 Wagstaff Piling was engaged to install a seepage barrier through a rockfilled seawall built to allow expansion of sub-sea iron ore mining operations on Cockatoo Island off the remote Kimberley coast in the North West of Western Australia. Earlier stages of seawall construction had used a variety of different construction techniques with varied success, and the history of sub-sea mining on the island had been plagued with failures, including failures in the slope of the seawall itself, hanging wall failure underneath and inside the seawall, and footwall failures as the ore was mined leaving the rock face inclined at 55 degrees, parallel to the bedding. The current expansion, known as the Stage 4 expansion, was more tightly constrained by the pit geometry and available materials than previous seawall expansion stages that adopted clay core and sheet pile seepage barrier solutions. In Stage 4, an innovative grout curtain seepage barrier solution was selected to ultimately provide the necessary cut-off to allow access to high grade ore, while protecting the mine from inundation by the sea."

The revitalization of Pittsburgh’s historic Strip District has led to the redevelopment of existing properties and the development of new properties. At one time, the Strip was home to wholesale market products. Now, the historical warehouse buildings are being converted to multi-use residential and commercial properties. One such property, 1600 Smallman Street, consisted of 1 to 6-story connected buildings that housed night clubs, retail shops, and office space. The lower story portion of the building, on the southwest side of the property, was torn down to make room for a new 5-story- parking garage with street level retail space. The remaining 6-story-building, on the northeast, was gutted to be renovated into high-end condominiums, keeping the exterior historical building facade.

"The United States Tennis Association (USTA) Billie Jean King National Tennis Center (BJKNTC) site is located in the northeastern portion of the Flushing Meadows Corona Park area of Queens, N.Y. The site occupies some of the most difficult subsurface conditions for construction in the New York City (NYC) metropolitan area, with unique challenges from geotechnical, seismic and foundation design perspectives.At the USTA site, Paleozoic crystalline bedrock is found at a depth of roughly 300 to 400 ft (90 to 120 m) below grade. The geologic history of the site is complicated, starting from the early Pleistocene, when the ancient Hudson River temporarily changed course, flowing across Queens enroute to the Atlantic. It eventually carved a deep valley through the Cretaceous soils, in some places all the way down to bedrock. A series of glaciers advanced and retreated across the region during the Pleistocene times, filling the deep valley with layers of assorted glacial soils. At its southern edge, the last major glacier to flow across the region built up a ridge at the southern tip of Flushing Meadows known as the Harbor Hill terminal moraine. This ridge blocked the valley forming a dam, so as ice started melting away the valley filled up with a lake fed by glacial meltwater. Layers of clean outwash sand and varved silt and clay filled the glacial lake. The ice did not retreat in a steady manner, instead periodically readvancing over the previously deposited soil in the lake, then retreating far enough to let the lake drain temporarily into Long Island Sound, before readvancing again.As a result of this repeated sequence of retreat, advance, retreat, etc., there are places where a “crust” of desiccated soil formed when the lake drained, and areas with interlayers of outwash sand where ice readvanced into the lake. When the ice melted north of Long Island Sound, the glacial lake filling Flushing Meadows drained forming Flushing Creek. During the Holocene (roughly the last 11,000 years), as ice melted further away and sea-level rose, low lying areas filled with river sands and marine clays, along with coastal marsh deposits. Table 1 lists the soil design properties on site and Figure 1 exhibits the geologic section across the site."

"A refinery expansion project for Marathon Petroleum Company in Southern Louisiana required existing medium to large pipe racks to be expanded for additional capacity. Foundation modifications were necessary in order to add levels to the existing pipe racks. New piles were added and existing pile cap foundations were expanded. Several different pile types were considered. Custom designed large diameter helical piles were chosen, because they can be installed quickly with low overhead restrictions, produce minimal soil spoils, and are cost effective. The load capacity required for piles was higher than typical, off-the-shelf helical piles. In particular, the lateral load capacity demand was high due to wind loads of a hurricane prone region. Methods used to design and size helical piles are summarized including capacity to torque ratio estimation for composite helical piles. Pile load testing was performed in order to confirm design capacities of the helical piles under axial and lateral loading. Measured axial and lateral deflections compared well with predicted values. This case history evaluates the effectiveness of modern helical pile design methods within the context of a real and practical example.INTRODUCTIONAs the capacity of modern installation equipment increases, large-diameter helical piles are being used to support higher loads in more diverse applications. Currently, large-diameter high-capacity helical piles are used for electrical power transmission, power generation, high-rise buildings, bridges, and industrial applications. This case study regards a 2.5-mile pipe rack modification project within an existing refinery. One of the many challenges for engineering and construction of refinery revamp projects is determining how to effectively expand the capacity of existing foundations for additional equipment, piping, and other facilities. Custom designed large-diameter helical piles provided an effective solution to the challenges faced when expanding the capacity of existing pipe racks."

"During 2016, foundation piling works were completed to allow for the construction of a production and storage/handling terminal in Rotterdam. It is there that steel foundations will be produced for offshore wind farms and the oil and gas industry. Several Dutch contracting companies were involved in constructing: foundations for an assembly hall, a barge quay and a deep-sea quay wall. For the hall foundations, cast in situ concrete vibro piles were created. Open ended steel casing piles were also installed due to very high cone resistances which made it impossible to perform cast in situ piles in certain areas. The quay wall was constructed with open ended steel casing piles in combination with sheet piles. A deep-sea quay wall was also constructed to provide enough storage area for the offshore mono piles. This project was unique and challenging due to the use of different foundation technologies in challenging circumstances and soil conditions. This paper will give an insight into the Dutch use of varying foundation piling techniques for deep-sea quay wall constructions. It can be concluded that even experienced local contractors can be surprised by variations in soil conditions. It will also show how the contractors adapted to the difficult circumstances.PROJECT OUTLINEThe project consisted of a barge quay near the assembly hall with a length of 500 metres, width of 42 metres and a height of 35 metres, and a deep-sea quay wall 480 metres in length. This paper concentrates on the foundation works for the construction of the deep-sea quay wall. The construction of the deep-sea quay wall consisted of a combination of open ended steel casing piles with a diameter of Ø 1420 mm and a wall thickness varying between 21 and 23 mm. The lengths of the steel casing piles varied between 32 and 37 metres. Between the steel casing piles triple PU 28 sheet piles were installed with lengths varying between 26 and 29 metres. In the Netherlands, a combination of open ended steel piles and sheet piles is known as a “combi wall”. For the deep-sea quay wall a steel combi wall was shored with steel H- section profiles that were driven in a raked position whilst being injected with grout, so called MV-piles. The MV piles for this project consisted of steel HEB 600 sections with lengths from 52 up to 59 metres and were installed with angles varying between 42.5 and 47.5 degrees. "Engineers and developers have witnessed the growing popularity of deep basement structures as components of urban commercial and residential developments. This is often attributed to inadequate surface parking facilities in urban centres and a somewhat popular belief that underground parking facilities improve both commercial and aesthetic values of urban structures. For many years, diaphragm walls and sheet pile walls have been widely accepted as effective deep excavation support systems for basement construction in urbanised zones. However, these are now being replaced by bored pile retaining walls as preferred earth retention systems of choice on many projects for several reasons, which may include economy, faster installation process, reduced space requirement for machinery and ancillary equipment, flexural rigidity and axial capacities.However, there are complexities associated with the use of bored pile retaining walls on urban developments. These include; limitations due to vertical and horizontal installation tolerances, which is a major issue when wall is required to provide groundwater cut-off for multi-level basements as tolerances are difficult to achieve for deep piles, uncertainty associated with the prediction of wall axial capacity as piles are rarely tested, difficulties in using temporary props as wall restraint due to restricted working spaces in urbanised zones and difficulties in adopting ground anchors as restraint due to the existence of adjacent sensitive structures in built-up areas. Such complexities have resulted in cases of failure, non-serviceability and abandonment of basement construction schemes. Therefore, overcoming the intricacies associated with the application of bored pile walls is becoming a priority to the present day basement engineer.This paper is centred on the numerical modelling, design, construction and monitoring aspects of four recent case histories of multi-level basement and marine engineering construction schemes in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, which involved the use of bored pile retaining walls. The paper highlights the various customised approaches and innovative novel solutions adopted on the sites, to mitigate risks and ultimately overcome the intricacies associated with the earth retention techniques. Simple empirical equations for developing the geometry of secant pile walls for effective groundwater cut-off are presented and validated. An alternative approach for predicting axial capacities of bored pile walls is also presented; this is shown to be considerably less conservative than a common routine design approach, while also in good agreement with observations made in a recent series of laboratory-based scale model tests."
