Les substrats organiques sont à la base des biofiltres utilisant la réduction des sulfates pour générer de l&apos;alcalinité et diminuer la concentration des métaux dans des effluents contaminés. Afin de tester l&apos;efficacité de résidus forestiers utilisés dans de tels contextes, cinq types d&apos;écorce de nature et d&apos;âge variables ont été placés dans des contenants hermétiques et mis en présence d&apos;une solution synthétique de drainage minier acide. Le pH, l&apos;alcalinité et les concentrations de Fe2+ et SO4 2- ont été mesurés à intervalles réguliers pendant 70 jours. L&apos;importance d&apos;un éventuel neutralisant minéral et du type de souches de bactéries sulfato-réductrices pour l&apos;initiation et l&apos;évolution des réactions d&apos;oxydo-réduction ont été évalués en utilisant de la dolomite ainsi que des inocula de sédiments portuaires réducteurs et de boues d&apos;usine d&apos;épuration. Une augmentation de pH et des diminutions de Fe2+ et SO4 2- ont été notées dans tous les réacteurs. En l&apos;absence de dolomite, le pH augmentait de 1.6 à 5-6, Fe2+ diminuait de 400 à moins de 5-100 mg/L, et SO4 2- diminuait de 2500 à 750-1250 mg/L. Les échantillons inoculés avec des sédiments s&apos;avéraient légèrement plus performants que ceux avec boues. En présence de dolomite, le pH atteignait 6.5-7.0, et Fe2+ et SO4 2- tombaient à <5 et 20-40 mg/L, respectivement. Le degré de réactivité des résidus forestiers n&apos;était pas une simple fonction inverse de leur âge. Les échantillons ayant le mieux réagi, bien que parmi les plus vieux testés (années 1980), étaient ceux contenant une proportion significative d&apos;écorces de feuillus et peu de bran de scie. Les échantillons avec des proportions élevées d&apos;écorce de conifères ou de bran de scie étaient associés à des taux de réduction moindre. Nonobstant l&apos;amélioration rapide des conditions obtenue avec la dolomite, grâce à une neutralisation initiale plus prompte, il s&apos;avère que le type de résidus forestiers éventuellement utilisé dans une barrière réactive est de première importance pour l&apos;efficacité des mécanismes de réduction. Un système basé sur l&apos;utilisation de résidus forestiers devrait utiliser des écorces (plutôt que du bois) provenant de feuillus (plutôt que de conifères).

Current production of vanadium will be quantified and examined in terms of production by country, sources of raw materials for production and cost implications of the production processes. Current consumption of vanadium by country and by application will be reviewed. Vanadium supply/demand balance in recent years and the resulting impact on global inventory levels will be discussed. Projections for changes in global production, consumption and resulting inventory changes for the vanadium market in the coming years will be made.

"Abstract - We present a new approach for the evaluation of the potential of emerald reserves in gem projects using beryllium (Be) mobility. The distribution of Be in the different phases of hydrothermally altered (albitized) black shale hosting Colombian emerald deposits indicates that Be mobility is associated with the breakdown of Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide phases. The amount of Be that can be mobilized (~0.7 x 10-6 g/g; i.e., 0.7 ppm) may represent up to 18 wt% of the total Be contained in the black shale. A mass balance calculation applied to a well-constrained alteration zone of the Chivor mines, and based on the quantification of Be that can be mobilized under hydrothermal conditions, gives an estimate of the total gem reserves of these mines. Resumé - Une nouvelle approche, basée sur la mobilité du béryllium (Be) pour l’évaluation des réserves d’émeraude dans des projets d’exploitation de gemmes est présentée. La distribution du Be dans les différentes phases minérales de schistes noirs hydrothermalisés (albitisés) qui contiennent les gisements d’émeraude colombiens, indique que le Be mobilisable se trouve dans les oxyhydroxydes de fer et de manganèse. La quantité de Be potentiellement mobilisable (~0,7 x 10-6 g/g; soit 0,7 ppm) constitue jusqu’à 18% poids du Be global contenu dans le schiste noir. Even though many approaches have been proposed for automated fault detection and diagnosis of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, and advanced maintenance programs, such as preventive and predictive maintenance have been applied for the systems, issuing work orders for corrective maintenance is still a reality. Currently corrective maintenance still accounts for more than 55% of all maintenance programs in average facilities in the US (DoE, 2010). Indoor air related problems are especially important among corrective maintenance work orders. This paper provides details of a case study conducted to capture the workflow that HVAC mechanics follow, their rationale in diagnosis process and the information they typically refer to while responding to indoor air related corrective maintenance work orders. The general workflow for HVAC mechanics to complete such types of work orders was summarized into 5 stages, and generic information requirements recorded from the case study were synthesized. Initial findings show two main challenges in the industry for HVAC mechanics to get access to required information, which highlights the need for a systematic approach that would enable identification of such information applicable to a given context under which a work order has been generated and provide values of required information for HVAC mechanics to do sound diagnosis through integrated data repositories.

"As explosives become more widely used in urban and other congested areas, governmental regulations pertaining to their use are becoming more pervasive and stringent. This is forcing the blasting industry to review its entire spectrum of operations. Greater attention is now being paid not only to the design and layout of blasts, but also to the monitoring and recording of their after-effects for both legal and business reasons.Current PracticesThe major users of explosives in urban areas are quarry operators and construction companies. A characteristic of both of these industries, at least in recent years, is a relatively low margin of profit. This, coupled with the fact that their use of explosives is relatively intermittent, prevents them from having the kind of professional consulting services that blasting operations really warrant in today&apos;s regulatory environment. When such services are obtained, they tend to be directed more at the design and execution of the blast than at the recordkeeping function. The records that are kept tend to be more in the form of a summary of the consultant&apos;s design data as opposed to the kind of after-effect detail that is necessary.The more experienced consultants and operators now realize that at least as much attention must be paid to the record-keeping as to the design work. Regulatory bodies at all levels of government are insisting on the availability of such records.Unfortunately, the instrumentation in use today for taking such measurements does not lend itself to the practice of intermittent consulting. Current monitoring and recording instruments are based on so-called analog technology of the type that has traditionally been applied to the monitoring of earthquakes. They require set-up and calibration procedures which must be repeated each time the instrument is moved, or the blasting parameters are changed, as well as complex total analysis of the recorded data. This can lend to confusion and a dilution of responsibility for anything other than the design work and possibly some summary reporting."

Introduction Classified equipment originally installed in 1923 in the Britannia mill consisted of eighteen Model C Dorr Simplex classifiers, each in closed circuit with a pebble-mill. These machines were only three feet wide and of light construction, so that their raking capacities were necessarily limited, the maximum being about 20 tons per hour for each classifier. On conversion from pebble-mills to ball-mills, in 1924, attempts to increase circulating loads with higher rake speeds resulted only in overflowing a coarser product to the flotation cells. The elevator type of classifier was developed locally in 1935 and during that year two units, each having a sand carrying capacity of from 30 to 40 tons per hour, were installed. With such loads, a material increase in the grinding capacities of the ball-mills was noticed, and, after further development work on the elevator classifier, fifteen of the small Dorr classifiers were replaced by units of this type, capable of handling approximately 75 tons of sand per hour, with later alterations increasing this capacity to well over 100 tons per hour. In the meantime, the three remaining ball-mills had been placed in circuit with Dorr FX classifiers, one of which was six feet wide and the others five feet wide. Impartial and exhaustive tests conducted on the Dorr FX versus the elevator classifier showed the average results on these machines at Britannia to be substantially the same. A large amount of testing was carried on to determine the effect of circulating load on the output of the grinding units. This work indicated a rapid increase in the grinding rate as the ball-mill feed increased up to about 60 tons per hour, after which a relatively slow increase took place up to 100 tons per hour. No benefits were derived from higher circulating loads. A 300 to 500 per cent circulating load, depending on the nature of the ore treated, is considered to be within the economical range for the grinding of Britannia ores.

Les critères de qualité de l?eau pour les métaux visant à protéger la vie aquatique sont présentement basés sur les concentrations totales. Cependant, la complexation (association de ces métaux avec des ligands en solution) peut diminuer de façon importante la toxicité des métaux sur les organismes aquatiques. Pour évaluer l?importance de la complexation pour diminuer la toxicité des métaux dans les effluents miniers et métallurgiques, nous avons étudié la spéciation des métaux et la toxicité chronique de différents effluents miniers et métallurgiques. La phase dissoute des effluents a été échantillonnée à l?aide de la dialyse in situ et la spéciation du cuivre, du zinc et du cadmium a été calculée à l?aide du modèle d?équilibre chimique WHAM. Les concentrations de métaux libres ont également été mesurées à l?aide d?une technique d?échange ionique. Les concentrations de métaux libres calculés et mesurés indiquent que la complexation est importante dans les effluents miniers, particulièrement pour le Cu. Pour relier la spéciation des métaux et la toxicité chronique, nous avons mesuré en parallèle l?inhibition de croissance de l?algue Selenastrum capricornutum et des larves du poisson Pimephales promelas de même que l?inhibition de la reproduction du cladocère Ceriodaphnia dubia. (tests de toxicité chronique inclus dans le programme de suivi des effets environnementaux du règlement fédéral sur les effluents de mines de métaux). En absence de thiosels, aucune mortalité a été observée pour l?ensemble de ces tests et il n?y a pas eu également d?inhibition la croissance de la larve de poisson P. promelas. L?inhibition de la croissance de l?algue S. capricornutum, n?est pas reliée aux concentrations de métaux traces mais plutôt par aux concentrations de calcium. Les inhibitions de la reproduction du cladocère C. dubia sont reliées aux concentrations de métaux dissoutes et libres et non pas aux concentrations totales de métaux, démontrant l?importance des effets de la spéciation chimique sur la toxicité des métaux. Nos résultats indiquent que l?inhibition de la croissance de l?algue l?algue S. capricornutum est due aux concentrations élevées de calcium retrouvées dans les effluents miniers et que les concentrations totales de métaux ne peuvent être utilisées pour prédire la toxicité chronique vis à vis le cladocère C. dubia.

In his report on the Coal Resources of Southern Vancouver Island, Mr. J. D. MacKenzie stated that: "For various reasons it has been imagined that the coal deposits of Vancouver Island are extremely large and readily available." "Unfortunately," he added, "neither of these assumptions is correct." The chief disability under which the Island mines now labor does not concern the extent of the deposits. There is ample coal for the present demand. It does, however, concern the availability of the coal. If it were readily available the fuel-oil competition would not be serious and there would be no competition with Alberta, American, Welsh, or Australian coal along the Pacific Coast, for Vancouver Island coal could be produced at a price that would cut out all competition. The outstanding operating difficulty common to all Island mines is the extreme irregularity of the coal seams. To most people a coal seam is synonymous with uniformity, and in most coal seams a condition found at one point will be repeated at other points in the same seam throughout the basin. The accompanying drawings show how very far this is from being true in the Cassidy mine, which, in many respects, is typical of Vancouver Island mines. Figure I is a plan covering about 160 acres of the Douglas seam, the only workable seam in this part of the district. The area shown represents what has been the best producing part of the mine and indicates the very large percentage of the seam where the coal is either entirely lacking or so small in amount that it cannot be profitably recovered.

Elevations of stations 100 feet apart can be obtained at a rate of 1/2 mile per hour and to an accuracy better than 1/3 foot. This can be done along traverses which have not been cut and chained. In the metallurgical industry, furnace cooling is often employed to enhance furnace lifetime. Hence, the pyrometallurgical phase comes in close contact with a non-air coolant. The proximity of the pyrometallurgical phases to the coolants may lead to dangerous situations. In case of a breach of the cooling circuit, the contact between a hot and a cold liquid may cause a vapour explosion. The outcome of this vapour explosion includes a pressure wave which could result in damage to the furnace, bodily injuries or even casualties. To prevent such dramatic events, the origin of vapour explosions is currently being studied in more detail. For this purpose, OpenFOAM was used to perform Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. In a first step, simulations were run to get a better idea of the influence of the compressibility on the simulations. The obtained results help in getting a better insight on the need of computational power, and possible numerical errors using compressible or incompressible solvers in future simulations. In a second step, systems without vapour explosions were simulated and compared to experimental results with mercury and aluminum. INTRODUCTION Humanity started using metals for tools around the Chalcolitic (~7400 cal BC), when copper was melted in small furnaces (Radivojevic, Rehren, Farid, Pernicka, & Camurcouglu, 2017). Nowadays, metallurgy has grown into a major industry and it has become impossible to imagine society without metals. In the pyrometallurgical industry, coolants (low temperature liquids, for example water) and pyrometallurgical phases (high temperature liquids, such as slags, mattes and alloys) are typically present in close proximity of each other. The interaction between these two phases can have catastrophic consequences (Tveit et al., 2008; Ferguson & Zsamboky, 2017). A vapour explosion may occur as the consequence of the rapid evaporation and expansion of the coolant. Whereas the volume of a gas increases linearly with the temperature (approximately a factor four by heating from 100°C to 1300°C), a simple calculation of the ratio of the two specific volumes shows that evaporation causes the volume of water to increase by a factor of 1700 at 100°C and ambient pressure (Table 1 and equation (1)), a number that was also found in literature (George, Nexhip, George-Kennedy, Foster, & Walton, 2006). The volume change occurs so fast that it resembles an explosion, hence the name vapour explosion. Such an explosion at industrial scale can cause economical losses, bodily injuries or even fatalities.

"The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the convergence measurements in a drift excavated in the Callovo-Oxfordian claystone. The drift axis is in the direction of the major principal horizontal stress whereas the stress state is quasi-isotropic in the drift’s section. The initial geometry of the drift being circular, the anisotropic character of the deformation is taken into account by assuming that the drift shape evolves in an elliptical shape. The convergence measurement data on six different points around the drift are analyzed to identify the main axes of the deformation ellipse, following the methodology proposed by Vu et al. (2013, Rock Mech Rock Eng, 46, 231-246). Then, using the semi-empirical law proposed by Sulem et al. (1987, Int J Rock Mech Min Sci, 24, 145–154), the convergence evolution is fitted independently for each axis of the ellipse. This method permits to distinguish two effects: the face advance effect and the time-dependent behavior of the ground. The results for the two directions of the ellipse axes show very close values for the parameters describing the time-dependent properties of the ground, the distance of influence of the face, and the extension of the decompressed zone around the gallery. Such model can provide valuable insights for predictions of the convergence evolution in the long-term. INTRODUCTIONDeep disposal of radioactive waste has been studied in France for more than two decades. The French National Radioactive Waste Management Agency (Andra) began in 2000 the construction of an Underground Research Laboratory (URL) with the main goal of demonstrating the feasibility of a geological repository in Callovo-Oxfordian claystone. Several research programs have taken place to improve the knowledge of the rock properties and its response to the excavation progress. The optimization of supports design for long-term behavior is an important point to develop. A network of experimental drifts has been constructed with variations on: excavation method, structure geometry, supports system and orientations with respect to in-situ principal stresses’ directions. In each drift different sections have been instrumented to monitor the convergence evolution and the rock deformation. Continuous monitoring of the excavated zone around the drifts revealed the development of a fractured zone (extensional and shear fractures) induced by the excavation. The extent of this fractured zone depends on both the drift orientation and the in-situ stress field (Armand et al., 2014). Indeed, the fractures distribution has an important influence on the convergence of the drifts."

A RAPID glance over the history of The Mining Society of Nova Scotia shows that in its fifty years of service, which it is now rounding out, the Society has had an honourable career, rendered signal service to the mining industry of the Province, and helped to shape and improve legislation bearing on our mines and minerals, besicles publishing very many excellent papers and subsequent discussions thereon dealing with all subjects in its field of activity. THE GOLD MINERS? CLUB OF NOVA SCOTIA: The Society has the distinction of being generally regarded as the oldest mining fraternity in Canada ( 1). Iris the direct outgrowth or reorganization of The Gold Miners&apos; Club of Nova Scotia, which was organized in March, 1887, at a period when the gold mining industry was very prominent in the Province. Mr. Geo. W. Stuart, who, in 1934, was the only living member of the parent association, informed me that the seventeen Charter Members of The Gold Miners&apos; Club were John H. Anderson, Charles F. Andrews, A. B. Cox, Clarence H. Dimock, George E. Francklyn, L. W. Getchell, John E. Hardman, Alonzo A. Hayward, Major R. G. Leckie, W. L. Libbey, Edward M. McDonald, G. F. McNaughton, George A. Pyke, H. A. Sanders, C. E. Willis, Benjamin C. Wilson, and George W. Stuart. Others joined later in the same year.

The Tartan Lake deposit 12 km northeast of Flin Flon, Manitoba, was discovered in March of 1984 during the investigation of a VLF anomaly. The discovery hole intersected 16.83 metres averaging 21 gm Au/tonne. Since then, 99 holes, over 21,000 metres, have been drilled outlining 419,491 tonnes grading 11.79 gm Au/tonne in a di stinct group of mineralized lenses referred to as the Main Zone. Three other mineralized zones are known on the property but no reserves have been allowed for these, the South , East and Base Line zones. The Main Zone consists of seven parallel, east-west striking, quartz lenses. The lenses dip steeply to the north and plunge steeply west to northwest. Lens number l strikes for 160m and extends vertically to the 90m level. Within th is lens there is a 60m interval of low grade materi al. Lens number 2 is located about 5-l0m within the foo twall of Lens number I. Near surface this lens stri kes for 40m, at 200m level the strike length increases to 200 m. To date the deepest mineralization on Lens 2 has been intersected at a vert ical depth of 527m. Five smaller lenses are located in the foo twall of Lens 2 , containing gold va lues similar to the two main lenses but erratically distributed. The South Zone, located 100m south of the Main Zone, strikes east-west fo r l00m above the 100m level. The East Zone, found 230m east of the Main Zone, strikes fo r 80m and may possibly be an ex tension of the South Zone. The Base Line Zone is located 275m south of the Main Zone. Sporadic, but very significant gold intersections have been obta ined1n all three zones. Gold-bearing quartz-ca rbonate tourmaline veins are generally confined to a silicous crystal tu ff hori zon. The crystal tuff exhi bits fi ve distinct types of alteration: silicification, sericitization, ca rbonati zation, chlorit ization and pyritization. Silicification has resulted in a perasive addition of silica and the generation of multiple quartz veins. Sericiti zation is restricted to the crystal tuff. All rock units are pervasively carbonatized . Ankerite is abundant in the quartz veins and within the shear zones, particul arly those located along the chilled margin of a nearby gabbro-diorite intrusion. Chloritization is widely spread th roughout the rock units, while pyritization fo rms a broad alteration halo associated with the orebody. Sulphide accesso ry minerals associated with the gold , whi ch fo r the most part appears to be free, are chalcopyrite and pyrite. Generally, the higher grade gold values are related to an increased content of sulphides in the qua rtz veins. The average sulphide content in the deposit is less than 5 %.

(Whatever ""applied humanities"" might mean!)- Should courses covering pollution control, ecology, economics, technical writing, professional conduct and ethics be offered as compulsory subjects, as electives, or not at all?- Is it a better scheme to have students complete an Arts or Science degree before entering engineering?- Do we place too much emphasis on pure mathematics and sciences with the result that insufficient time is available for instruction in the engineering applications of these subjects?- Should English expression and/ or literature be included in the engineering programs and, if so, should these subjects be presented by the English department or by English lecturers captive to the engineering school? - Is the present program directed primarily at research activities rather than preparing engineers for their future roles in industry? - Should we teach our own versions of mathematics and physics? - Do we have sufficient engineers on the faculty strength or are we overloaded with Ph.D.'s from the pure sciences? - How flexible should the program be, what should the compulsory vs elective course content be, and what freedom of choice, if any, should be given with respect to elective courses? - To what extent should students contribute to faculty decisions?- How far should we pursue computer science subjects and do we need to make our students proficient in computer programming? - How far should operations research and mathematical models be carried in the undergraduate program when the students have limited experience in the real engineering world? - Realizing that an engineer never completes his education, should the undergraduate program cover ""bare bones"" engineering and should instruction in particular disciplines be left to graduate schools and / or industry?"
