Uranium Refining is the process in which undesirable neutron absorbing elements such as Boron (B), Gadolinium (Gd), Cadmium (Cd), Europium (Eu), Samarium (Sm) and other heavy metals (Fe, Ni, Co, Ca, Mg etc.) are removed to make it nuclear pure. At present, Uranium refining is carried out by solvent extraction process by using organic based solvent e, g. TBP diluted with Kerosene. The above process generates lot of nitrate bearing liquid waste and degraded organic. In order to eliminate use of hazardous organic and ammonia for Uranium refining altogether, a new process has been developed. In the new process, Yellow Cake is dissolved in nitric acid and uranium peroxide hydrate is precipitated selectively from the solution leaving all the impurities in the solution by using commercial grade hydrogen peroxide at a pre-defined pH, U conc., temperature and stoichiometric quantity of hydrogen peroxide under mild agitation. The precipitate is filtered and washed with DM water to obtain nuclear pure product meeting purity standard as per ASTM C ? 753-99.The product is spray dried and calcined to obtain uranium oxide. The process eliminates use of organic, flammable, toxic chemicals, consumes less quantity of nitric acid and uses environfriendly chemical hydrogen peroxide. The process is simple and can be integrated in the mill. A patent application is entering national phase in several countries including CANADA and abstract/full paper is available in WIPO publication no: WO/2009/013759.

Elle se poursuit actuellement sous Ie niveau de la vallée dans une fosse dont Ie diamètre est de I'ordre de 800 m (2,600 pi), et la profondeur de 150 m (500 pi) sou s Ie fond de la vallee. Elle doit atteindre une profondeur de 360 m (l, 180 pi) sous Ie fond de la vallee , avec des murs hauts de 360 à 490 m et des pentes moyenne de 44°. Le rythrne d'extraction est actuellement de 85,000 tonnes par jour.Dans Ie cadre des etudes entreprises par les Services Techniques de la Division Mines Gaspé, la compagnie Géomines Ltée a été consultée pour étudier les conditions hydrogéologiques et hydrologiques locales et participer a la conception d'un système de drainage superficiel et souterr ain. Un tel systerne de drainage visait: a éviter les importantes venues d'eau qu i affectent I'exploitation en periode de crue; amaintenir les pressions hydrostatiques au sein des parois de la fosse dans les limites imposees par les etudes de stabilite des pentes réalisees par la Mine.Les principales étapes de cette etude ont porté sur: la collecte et la compilation des données sur la géologie, l'hydrologie et l'hydrogeologie du site; . la détermination des caractéristiques hydrauliques du milieu rocheux à partir d'études structurales et de test s de perméabilité;"

The mining of high-grade, narrow vein deposits is an important field of activity in the precious metal mining sector. The principle factor that has undermined the profitability and effectiveness of mining such ore zones is the substantial dilution that occurs when blasting with explosives during extraction. In order to minimise dilution, the Thermal Fragmentation Mining Method enables the operator to extract a narrow mineralised corridor, 50 cm to 1 metre wide (according to the width of the vein), between two sub-level drifts. By inserting a strong burner powered by diesel fuel and compressed air into a pilot hole previously drilled directly into the vein, a thermal reaction is created, spalling the rock and enlarging the hole to 80 cm in diameter. The remaining ore between the thermal holes is broken loose using low powered explosives, leaving the waste walls intact. This patented method produces highly concentrated ore, resulting in 400% - 500% less dilution when compared to conventional mining methods. The mining method reduces the environmental affects of mining operations since much smaller quantities of rock are displaced, stockpiled, and treated using chemical agents. The fully mechanised equipment operated by a 2-person team (1 thermal fragmentation operator, 1 drilling operator) maximises the effectiveness of skilled personnel, and increases productivity and safety. The Thermal Fragmentation is currently employed in 3 mining operations in North America.

The Garford bulb anchor is a modified cable geometry developed and patented by Garford Ply Ltd. of Australia, and which has recently become widely available in Canada. It is produced by deforming the seven wires (including the central kingwire) of a standard cable into a bulb" (Fig. 1). Laboratory cable pull tests indicate that the bond capacity of the 25 mm Garford bulb anchor is comparable to the nutcase cable, in excess of the birdcage cable, and significantly higher than standard 7-wire strand. Its comparative advantage over the latter is most significant for tests at low radial confinement and high water:cement ratio grout, which corresponds to operational conditions of low quality rock (i.e. weak, highly fractured rock masses, foliated hanging walls, failed ground, etc.) and poor installation quality control (perhaps the most common explanation for cable bolt failures). It is under such conditions that cable bolting is often ineffective. The most impressive result is that for a reduction of the effective rock mass modulus by a factor of five, the Garford bulb cable capacity remains virtually unchanged.

"By now, most geologists and engineers in the Canadian mining industry are familiar with National Instrument 43101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101) and the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Definition Standards for Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves, which are incorporated by reference in NI 43-101. In recent years, significant progress has also been made in establishing standard reporting practices internationally that recognize the globalization of the industry and enable investors to compare projects anywhere in the world and make informed investment decisions. This article is part of a series that will summarize the background and development of international resource and reserve reporting standards by the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO), highlight its current activities and provide insight into international mineral reserve and resource reporting issues. CRIRSCO was formerly the Mineral Definitions Working Group of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions (CMMI), an organization representing professional bodies in all of the major mining and mining investment countries. In 2002, CMMI disbanded and CRIRSCO continued as a volunteer committee with limited funding from those professional bodies and increasingly from other sources, such as mining companies and regulatory bodies. CRIRSCO was adopted as a Task Force of the International Council of Mining and Metals (ICMM) in 2007. The ICMM is an influential industry body representing all of the major mining companies and many junior companies through its associated members, such as the Minerals Council of Australia, the Chamber of Mines of South Africa and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada. CRIRSCO now has funding to pursue its objectives."

THE most useful guide to the role of lime in flotation is the view that the chemistry of any flotation operation is primarily a pattern in relative solubilities. We have the coming together of a number of minerals, reagents, fortuitous salts, water, and oxygen, many of which have not been previously in contact with each other, and every one of which is free, at least to some extent, to abandon old alliances and to form new ones. Of one thing the operator may be sure, and that is that, when equilibrium has been reached, those new chemical combinations will have formed which are the least soluble combinations possible to the environment. The laws of solution govern the operation, which means that relative concentrations are always a factor, and temperature frequently is. What the operator is really doing when he chooses his reagents .in the first place (empirically or otherwise) and works out their? optimum amounts, is to provide an environment in which (1) the least soluble possible compound of the mineral he desires to float is one which is also non-wettable, while at the same time (2) the least soluble compounds possible to the minerals he desires to depress are wettable. Since all metathesis is reversible, perfection is impossible to achieve, and the operator is constantly striving to establish that combination of concentrations which will drive each and every particular reaction as far as possible in the direction he desires it to go, in accordance with the law of molar concentration.

Dans les rejets de flottation, cela justifie par contre de 15 à 25% des pertes totales en cuivre, Ie reste se retrouvant sous forme de tres petits globules de sulfures de cuivre ou de cuivre métallique, en moyenne de 2 à 3 micromètres de diamètre et bien emprisonnes dans Ie verre.SUMMARYThe slag produced by the Noranda continuous smelting process usually contains about 5% copper. It is processed as a conventional copper ore at the concentrator of Noranda Mines. The flotation tailings still often contain more than 0.3% Cu. The slag is mainly constituted by magnetite, fayalite and a siliceous glass. Evidently, the copper occurs mostly as sulphides and, to a lesser extent, as metallic copper. However the glass contains a small amount of this metal in solution, between 0.14 and 0.33% on an average, depending upon the investigated sample. This represents scarcely 1% of the total copper in the crude slag, but as much as 15 to 25% of this metal in the flotation tailings, in which the major part of the copper occurs as very small globules of copper sulphides or metallic copper with an average diameter of about 2 to 3 um and well-locked in the glass."

"Selected methods of pressure loss predictions in horizontal slurry flow in pipelines are presented. For a given combination of flow velocity, solids concentration and particle size, the slurry and its flow conditions are described, and an appropriate method of pressure loss prediction is outlined. The wide range of conditions treated in this paper may be found in practice in areas varying from the hydraulic transport of low concentration slurries to dense-phase conveying of paste backfill in underground mines.IntroductionThe hydraulic conveying of solid particles in pipelines is a major component of the mining and mineral processing industry. Whether the objective is to transport ore to the processing plant or to make use of mill tailing as backfill material; the need for well designed, economical hydraulic conveying systems is recognized.The contribution of this paper is part of an on-going research program at McGill University involved in optimizing and developing techniques for total mine waste disposal. One of the main concerns in the conveying of solid-liquid mixtures is the prior knowledge of the pumping power input required. This energy requirement is directly proportional to the pressure losses incurred in the pipeline system. Understanding the sources of such pressure losses and predicting their magnitudes should enable the system designer to make informed decisions regarding the optimum mode of hydraulic transportation commensurate with the over-all requirements of the operation.This paper is an attempt to classify pressure loss prediction methods encountered in the literature for solid-liquid mixtures. In spite of the large number of publications spanning thirty years of research in the field of slurry transportation, it is sometimes difficult to correctly identify the appropriate methods applicable to a given situation. This is partly due to the inherent complexity of the mechanics of slurry flow and the ensuing uncertainty about the nature of the flow regime under investigation.Our approach is to use three fundamental parameters, namely: flow velocity, solids concentration and particle size (for solid particles with a given density) to characterize the slurry and the flow conditions, and to match them with an adequate pressure loss prediction method. For each combination of flow velocity, solids concentration and particle size, a description of the most likely prevalent flow conditions and some known methods of dealing with them will be presented. Qualitative definitions of ""high"" and ""low"" magnitudes of the aforementioned parameters will be given as a general guide to the classification scheme presented in this paper."

"Large-diameter flotation columns are subject to severe axial mixing which has reduced column recovery and has generally limited it to cleaner applications. It has been assumed that columns with diameter greater than 1 m should be baffled to reduce axial mixing, but little work has been reported quantifying the effectiveness of baffling. Tests were done on a 0.2 m by 2 m column fitted with baffles of different geometry. It was generally found that the inclusion of baffles in the column worsened rather than improved mixing conditions in the column. This is explained in terms of a model for the effect of poor gas distribution on the behaviour of the column; this showed that under typical conditions a 16% excess of gas flux in the one compartment of a two-compartment column could result in one of the compartments being ""dead"" (i.e. with no net flow of slurry through it), resulting in a substantial loss of performance. The quality of mixing in the laboratory column was only reliably improved when the baffle was raised so that its top was positioned above the froth-slurry interface level. It should be possible to increase column recovery substantially with this configuration. The improved residence time distribution also means that columns can be used more effectively in roughing and scavenging applications. IntroductionFlotation columns have generally been used in cleaner applications, starting with their dramatic success at Mines Gaspe(1). Their lack of applications as roughers and scavengers is probably due to their poor residence time distribution (RID) when compared to the conventional cells they would replace. Espinosa-Gomez et al,(2) recently used them in rougher applications but installed three columns in series, presumably to cope with this disadvantage.Dobby and Finch in their seminal papersl(3,4) on the scale-up of flotation columns were the first to quantify the impact of axial mixing on the performance of industrial flotation columns. Laplante et al.(5) collected further data from the literature for column diameter D, ranging between 5 cm and 183 cm, gas superficial velocity Jg ranging between 0.7 cm/s and 2.8 cm/s and per cent solids in the feed S ranging between 3% and 52%. These data were analyzed with reference to the axial mixing model using the boundary conditions for closed vessels (the latter are more appropriate for flotation columns but the model is more difficult to use because analytical solutions for the RID are not available). WHEN I first received the kind invitation extended to me by the Mining Society of Nova Scotia, I read over very carefully the suggested title-"The importance of long-distance planning and budgetting in modern methods of mining, and the advisability of working to some definite plan". I came to the conclusion that I might as well confess my inability to handle properly such a vast and intricate subject within the scope of any one paper. More properly, I think a round-table discussion should be indulged in-a sort' of symposium carried on in similar fashion to the World Power and Coal Conferences- you know, a committee for this, a committee for that, and, finally, a committee to see what the committees are doing. Weil, your Secretary's suggestion is just like that- much too comprehensive for any half-hour's presentation. As a paper, also, it either becomes too general and therefore uninteresting, or i.t descends into detail and describes means and methods to the end desired, which have little attraction because they were designed to meet quite different conditions than those my audience would mentally be considering. Of the two evils facing me, I have chosen the one that sticks to the generalities. Your Secretary's query almost automatically divides itself into two distinct phases: First, the importance, and second, the advisability, of planning. Let us dwell for the moment on the second, because, if we can prove advisability, that leads to desirability and, finally, to doing. Proving is the difficult part of the little problem. Here was something I, personally and as a mining engineer, had been battling for all my corporate life without being able to prove it to anybody. Then I saw the way out of that. I perceived I could put that little question of advisability on another basis altogether-:put it in the class of "coming- some day- soon" whether you or l or anybody else liked it or not; call it, if you please, mandatory, certain, necessary, enforceable planning. All of which means that the problem of advisability has rather suddenly become the very practical one of "how to do it". Why?

In 1984 and 1985, two 7.6m diameter TBM tunnels were driven from the Donkin-Morien peninsula in Nova Scotia to access the Harbour coal seam. The design of the ground support was based on identifying zones of rock failure through the application of the Hoek Brown failure criterion and the early use of finite element analyses. In 1992, the mining project was abandoned and the tunnels allowed to flood. Monitoring data from the tunnel was subsequently used as a case study in the development of the concepts of brittle rock behaviour. In 2007, the tunnels were pumped out as part of a feasibility study into the reintroduction of longwall mining into the coalfield. There is a good match between observations of the collapse zones in the roof and sides of the tunnel and a simple elastic analysis using brittle parameters, a spalling limit of 5, and a low independent shear modulus. The brittle analyses form the basis of the design for the resupport of the tunnels.

"Geophysical data are often presented on maps, sections or profiles with minimal data processing. A common example is magnetic data, in which the diurnal-free raw readings are merely contoured on a map. Other examples include profile presentation of VLF-EM data, IP pseudo-sections and airborne EM anomalies which may be shown on a map with only the measured amplitudes indicated.In recent years, efforts have been directed to the portraying of data in more useful forms. A number of algorithms (i.e., manipulative procedures and equations) have proven to contribute significantly to the usefulness of geophysical data. Some can be applied manually; others are sufficiently complicated to require a computer. Some merely alter the data to a more useful geometric form without altering the units. Others yield quantitative estimates of source body parameters such as conductivity and shape. Several examples follow:1. A simple algorithm is in common use which transforms noisy non-contourable VLF-EM data into less noisy contourable data. The input is the dip angle in degrees or per cent and the output is also in these same units.2. A simple algorithm has recently been developed which allows multi-level dipole-dipole IP data to be contoured on a map. Again, the units are not altered.3. A relatively complicated algorithm is in common use which transforms non-contourable height-sensitive helicopter EM data into contourable resistivity data,4. An algorithm has been recently developed which transforms non-contourable height-sensitive EM data into contourable weight per cent magnetite.The purpose of all the above techniques is to present the data in a simplified form. This, in turn, allows an easier assimilation by the user of much of the information content of the data."

"The object of this paper is to review electrolytic copper refining as it was in 1954(1), as it is now in 1984, and to comment on the many improvements which have been made in the last thirty years.In 1954, and even in 1984, the ASTM specification B 115 for cathode copper was 99.90% minimum copper plus silver content and 100% minimum electrical conductivity, IACS standard. However, to meet competition and to satisfy the requirements of the fabricators and the electrical industry, the electrolytic refinery must supply a product of 99.95% to 99.96% minimum copper content, and 101fJlo minimum electrical conductivity.The range of cathode impurities reported by 20 major copper refineries in 1954 are given in Table I.The much more rigid British Specification, DD 78, for high-purity cathode copper, specifies individual elements, as well as groups of elements, as shown in Table 2.The Svenska test has been replaced by a similar procedure which uses 2.r mm diameter wire. The ISO test is the one listed in the DD 78 specification. In Table 3, corresponding values for the Svenska and ISO test s are given for various wire bar coppers."

The Mount Wright iron are mine and upgrading plant were brought on line in the fall of 1975. The mine is located near the Quebec - Labrador border some six hundred miles northeast of Montreal. This paper describes the crushing, grinding and concentrating facilities at Mount Wright, and some design: criteria used in equipment selection and flow sheet design. Also mentioned are some "asbuilt" modifications. A brief description of the over-all flowsheet is also included. Introduction IN SEPTEMBER 1970, the Quebec Cartier Mining Company started development of the Mount Wright iron ore mine. The estimated are reserve is in excess of 1,000,000 ,000 long tons of concentrates, with an average crude are grade of 31.5% Fe. The run-of-mine ore is crushed, ground and concentrated to a product having 66% Fe and 5% silica at an annual concentrate production r ate of 18.4 million long tons. The daily production rate of over 50,000 long tons of concentrate necessitates a daily mine output of approximately 250,000 long tons of material, of which 50% is waste.

"The consolidation of mine backfill by free zing is a concept which has been under study in the mining engineering laboratories at Laurentian University during the past three years. The proposed underground application of freezing involves the artificial freezing of in-situ backfill by means of a refrigerated brine solution which would be circulated through a circuit off freeze pipes. The most interesting findings to date are: (I) The uniaxial compressive strength off frozen fill is considerably higher than that of cemented fill in a ratio of 20:1 (aggregate to cement), and (2) load deformation characteristics of the frozen fill suggest that a higher ice content results in more brittle failure and that samples which have initially failed can still support up 10 one-half the ultimate load without additional failure.Although at this early stage a derailed economic analysis of the procedure has not been possible, a general evaluation of the costs involved suggests that the method could be competitive with the hydraulic placement of cemented backfill. Results obtained from laboratory investigations indicate that the freezing of backfill is a structurally feasible option .IntroductionGround consolidation by freezing is based on the principle of transformation o f water contained in an aggregate-slurry into ice, which act s as a binding agent between the bulk particles, and which results in the transformation of a granular soil into a ""rock -type"" material. The abrasive nature of the particles enhance s the strength o f the ice by providing internal friction. As a result of this internal friction, the chances of plastic flow of the frozen mass when in a loaded condition are reduced(1). T he strength of a frozen aggregate is al so dependent on the grain shape of the aggregate particles which may or may not promote particle interlocking(2) and on the temperature since, below the freezing point of the water/aggregate mixture, the strength of the frozen mass increase s with decreasing temperatures.In the shaft sinking industry, artificial freezing of loose , unconsolidated soils has been in practice for several decades. Shafts for Saskatchewan 's potash industry have been sun k to depths of 3000 feet by employing artificial freezing to stabilize the Blairmore Formation(3). The common procedure for freezing ground for shaft sinking is summarized as follows(4,5): I) 150 mm diameter bore holes spaced on 1.5 m centres are drilled in a circular pattern with a radius of 1.5 m outside the periphery of the proposed shaft."

"Hat Creek coal was treated by the liquid solvent extraction process in a continuous plant at the U.K. National Coal Board Coal Research Establishment.Extraction levels of over 80 per cent dry-mineral-matter-free (dmmf) coal were achieved.Total light oil yield was around 47 per cent of the dmmf coal. The light oil was shown to be a good feedstock for secondary refining into gasoline, jet fuel and diesel fuel.In spite of the high mineral matter content of the coal the solid residue was successfully removed from the coal extract by filtration.IntroductionBritish Columbia Hydro (BCH) and the National Coal Board of Great Britain (NCB) undertook a joint project to test the Hat Creek coal from British Columbia in the NCB's coal liquefaction process designed to produce transport fuels and feedstocks for the chemical industry by the liquid solvent extraction of coal(1), In this process most of the coal is dissolved in an aromatic solvent and the residual solids consisting of mineral matter and undissolved coal are removed by filtration. The resultant coal extract solution is fed to a hydrocracker for conversion to light liquid products and a fraction suitable for recycling as solvent. The light liquid products can be converted to gasoline and diesel fuel in a secondary refining stage.The dissolution of the coal is effected by heat-treating a slurry at a temperature in the region of 400°C which causes some bonds in the coal to rupture with the formation of radicals(2,3). These radicals are stabilized by hydrogen transfer from the hydroaromatic groups in the solvent, resulting in a reduction in the molecular weight of the coal. In the absence of donor groups the radicals combine to form an insoluble high molecular weight product(4). From studies of the kinetics of these reactions it has been shown that the formation and stabilization of the radicals is rapid at temperatures around 400°C(2,3). The dissolution of the depolymerizing coal is, however, relatively slow and the need to ensure complete dissolution in order to achieve a high extraction restricts the selection of digestion time(5). Further, it is important that digests do not contain depolymerizing coal as it may re-form under the applied stress in the filter cake inhibiting flow through the bed and resulting in low filtration rates(6).Thus, in practice relatively long digestion times are generally required in order to ensure complete dissolution of the depolymerizing coal, while it is also important to avoid depletion of the hydrogen donor groups in the solvent which would lower the rate of hydrogen donation to the coal and thus reduce the extraction yield and adversely affect the filtration(7). Clearly it is desirable to optimize the digestion time and temperature with regard to the extraction yield and filtration properties.The precise control of the distribution of products from the hydro-cracker is important for the composition of the recycle process solvent. The principal functions of the solvent are to provide a source of donatable hydrogen and a vehicle for the dissolution of the depolymerizing coal. Hydrogen transfer from the solvent, achieved by the conversion of hydroaromatic to aromatic groups, stabilizes the radicals formed by thermal cleavage of some of the bonds in the coal resulting in a progressive reduction in the size of the coal molecules(8,9) and dissolution in the solvent. The combination of radicals would result in the formation of insoluble material and a reduced extraction yield of the coal(4). Thus to achieve a high extraction yield the solvent should contain sufficient hydrogen donor groups to prevent extensive radical combination. The composition of the solvent should also be controlled to allow dissolution of the depolymerizing coal and to prevent precipitation of this material during the subsequent processing of the coal digest and extract solution. "Syncrude has entered a new era involving the use of pipeline slurries to convey oil sand to the extraction plant. Hydrotransport operations and base plant operations encounter vast performance differences when processing different types of oil sand. This paper describes the hydrotransport process, its history at Syncrude, methods of describing the source ore characteristic and plant performance. The use of this information within Syncrude and how it will be managed on an ongoing basis will also be described. IntroductionThe Syncrude Canada Ltd. site is located 43 km north of Fort McMurray, Alberta, on the Athabasca oil sand deposit. The Syncrude operation consists of mining, extraction, upgrading, utilities and other support facilities. The mined ore is sent to the extraction plant where water and solids are removed from the bitumen. The bitumen is then sent to the upgrading plants to be further processed into Syncrude Sweet Blend (a light sweet crude oil). Syncrude produced 73.5 Mbbls of Syncrude Sweet Blend in 1996 and produced 75.7 Mbbls in 1997. Prior to 1993, Syncrude moved ore from the pit to the extraction plant via four dragline / bucketwheel/ conveyor systems. These systems, supplemented by auxiliary ore crushers, satisfied the feed requirements of the extraction plant. Ore was conveyed to the control tower area and placed in the dump pocket via four radial stackers. Various blending scenarios occurred at this point, using feed from the four mining quadrants and from auxiliary feed crushers. Upon entering the extraction plant from the base mine, the oil sand passed through a series of tumblers where it was mixed with hot water and caustic. It then proceeded to one of four primary separation vessels where bitumen froth was floated off and the middlings and coarse fractions were recombined and sent to the tail oil recovery vessels, or TORs, for further processing."

"A study of the techniques to integrally cast copper tubes in copper tuyeres for use in blast furnaces has been carried out. The work has been performed in support of current efforts to produce two-compartment tuyeres having improved water-cooling capacity. A test pattern corresponding to a vertical section of a two-compartment tuyere, and including a cast-in-place copper tube, was used to investigate such variables as tube preparation, tube coolant, pouring temperature, pouring rate and gating design. Successful castings, either with a good metalfurgical bond or good intimate contact between the tube and the casting, were produced, with all combinations of gating system and position of the tube tried. However, the pouring temperature, the pouring rate and the effectiveness of the coolant are interrelated and must be controlled to produce a good metallurgical bond.IntroductionAs part of its contribution to, and in collaboration with, the Copper Casting for the Steel Industry Committee, CANMET has undertaken research into the methods and techniques needed for the integral casting of copper tubes into high-conductivity copper castings.The objective was to produce two-compartment copper blast furnace tuyeres in which the water-cooled nose compartment consists of a copper tube metallurgically bonded to the wall of the high-conductivity copper casting. This design, developed in the UK, has demonstrated a much extended service life with attendant economies; unscheduled shutdown of blast furnaces due to tuyere failure is a significant problem in the steel industry. The Canadian steel industry believes that this design will replace the currently used single-compartment tuyere in blast furnaces within a few years.The technology to produce these tuyeres does not exist in Canada. One of the main features is the inclusion of a smooth-walled cooling channel in the nose, which permits high velocity cooling water to be employed. A second compartment acts as a reservoir backup, should failure in the nose occur. This would allow continued use of the tuyere for a period of time, permitting a scheduled shutdown for repair s. To assist the Canadian producers of tuyeres to maintain their market, and the Canadian steel industry to have a reliable domestic supply, it is important that the necessary technology for the production of two-compartment tuyeres be developed and transferred to industry."

In the fall of 1961, Cominco dis-carded its long-established system of feeding the lead blast furnaces by narrow-gauge tram and V-cars, and installed an elevated monorail bucket system. This system automatically loads buckets of sinter, along with the correct proportion of coke, and delivers them to any of several designated furnaces. Direct labour usage has been reduced by nine men per day; improved coke proportioning has been achieved; and a major safety hazard has been eliminated. Introduction I N THE fall months of l 961. the system of feeding the lead blast furnaces at the Trail, B.C., smelter of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited was altered from the tradition-al narrow-gauge railway and V-car method to one employing mono-rail carriers. "This paper will discuss the application of tools and the evolution of computer-assisted procedures in the production planning process at Quintett e Coal Limited (QCL). In 1986, QCL produced 5.3 Mt of clean coal from their surface mining operation located in north eastern British Columbia. The structural complexity of the sedimentary deposit and high rate of mining necessitate the consideration of large amounts of geological information which continually updates the interpretation. There are multiple unit operations required during the process of mining through a given multi-seam sequence, which results in many interdependent faces, and multiple iterations of scheduling sequences in order to satisfy a given set of objectives. In order to facilitate these activities in a timely fashion, it was recognized that a computer systems' capability needed to be developed which could increase the efficiency of information input, manipulation and output. IntroductionQuintette Coal Limited (QCL) has been operating a large metallurgical open pit coal mine in northeastern British Columbia, since 1982. The mine produced 5.3 Mt of clean coal in 1986 for export to Japan. Throughout the start-up period and the subsequent build -up of production levels, it became evident that the primary producing area was comprised of extremely complex faulted structures. This has resulted in development and modification of specialized mining methods employed to effectively recover the resource. Similarly, the planning and engineering techniques employed have been evolved over the same period of time. The implementation of computerized methods has been one of the major developments in this process, including geology interpretation, modelling, reserve definition, quantification, production planning and scheduling, and graphical plan presentation. These capabilities have been employed, in various forms, for project scale feasibility work and long range planning for some time, however, the use of computer tools for short-term, detailed production planning of a complex mining environment presents a different set of problems. It is hoped that a presentation of the current state of evolution and future plan s for development will be of interest to organizations considering implementation of a similar system."
