My instructions are to introduce the Speakers and to provide a general introduction.I do the latter with humility not only because of a lack of personal experience or because tailings revegation is not well established technology, but because any general statement on a country or industry as diverse as the Canadian Mining Industry is bound to be wrong somewhere.Laying aside normal standards of accuracy I proceed as follows:In considering the question of tailings revegetation, one asks two basic questions:1. Aesthetics is the philosphy of taste. It is concerned with the appreciation of things rather than what they really are. It is much easier to get into an argument on aesthetics than to get out of it feeling you have said something of consequence.Technical criteria can be divided into the following sub-objectives: 1. To isolate the tailings basin so surrounding land is not degraded. The first step here is stabilization of the surface to prevent wind and water erosion."

Several new hydrometallurgical plants have been built in the past years, new processes and equipment as well as advanced process control systems are being used to deal with the increasing requirements of safety, quality and production. Plant Information Management Systems are now being recognized as a key infrastructure component of the plant, giving the management, the operators, process engineers, finance, maintenance, and regulatory agencies an integrated view of the operation and providing the links for the (increasingly) multidisciplinary organization. This paper reviews several implementations of Plant Information Systems; real time performance management infrastructure examples are reviewed as a key component of business strategies, such as Mine to Port Planning and Supervision, Metallurgical Mass Balances, Solvent Extraction Composition Statistical Process Control, methods to minimize organic losses, reduce variable costs and to improve metal extraction. Several examples are provided to illustrate how companies are using the real time and historical information from assets and metallurgical processes to enable and empower people to improve the operations quality, safety and throughput, as well as continuous improvement and innovation initiatives.

Pipelines are subject to multiple threats often requiring quantification of pipeline risk and engineering evaluation of in-line inspection and other data to effect discovery of conditions defined by the regulation. Public concern and pressure from regulatory bodies are accelerating the need for pipeline operators to formalize and intensify their approach to integrity management. Most operators need a phased approach to progressively adopt the most relevant and needed assessments. The organized and relevant assessment steps need to be introduced according to data available and maturity of the integrity management program. Each refinement to the quantification offers distinct advantages to the user. In this paper, the progressive integrity assessment solutions using quantitative methods are presented. Methodologies for engineering evaluation of integrity in-line inspection data for immediate and future integrity are summarized. Corrosion is used as an example, but the approach is applicable to any time-dependent defect based hazard. Strategies for pipeline integrity management are discussed.

ONE of the morning sessions at the recent Annual Meeting was devoted to a Symposium on ways and means to expedite geological investigation, and also to promote greater prospecting activity, in Canada. It will be recalled that at the 1940 Annual Meeting, held in Winnipeg, a paper(l) prepared by Dr. G. A. Young, Chief Geologist of the Geological Survey, was presented, and was followed by a Symposium on Geological Investigations in Canada(2). On that occasion, the participants were in the main geologists, and they included the directors or other officials of each of the Provincial departments or bureaus of mines. At the Montreal meeting, the subject was discussed mainly from the point of view of the mining industry. The following pages present, in somewhat summarized form, the several contributions to that discussion.-ED. DR. J. J. O'NEILL(3), who was to have opened the Symposium, was unfortunately prevented through illness from attending the meeting. He had intended outlining the main features of his paper on The Exploitation and Conservation of Mineral Resources in a Balanced Development of Canada, presented at the last annual meeting of the Royal Society of Canada( 4). In his absence, DR.J. A. DRESSER presented a summary of the paper.

"Mineral exploration in Canada traditionally has gone from boom to bust in cyclical pat-terns following market and discovery cycles, but other endemic factors related to exploration financing and performance have contributed to the amplitude and recurrence of these fluctuations. In view of these problems, junior exploration is reviewed here in a marketing perspective, looking at the 4 Ps: Product, Price, Placement and Promotion.In the 1980s, MEDA incentives gave the shares of junior and mining companies significant price and promotion advantages, and contributed to excessive exploration funding. Many were thus led to minimize the basic values needed for continued investor interest: appropriate levels of product quality, sustained share value and customer satisfaction. Basic changes are needed to improve the marketing of junior mineral exploration in the future, with or without improved fiscal incentives. To be successful, the required improvements must come from the technical participants, but the financial partners also need to be involved.Exploration in Canada must be marketed with vigour, both in Canada and internationally. Exploration, mine development and mine production are essential to our economy. They are environmentally acceptable and they are welcome in Quebec and in most Canadian provinces and territories. Canadian exploration and mining are entrepreneurial industries that must take better advantage of their strengths and achievements and remove the shortcomings that hinder them: nobody can do it for them!"

This paper provides an overview of the patenting process as it pertains to the fields of metallurgy and mining, and summarizes some general patenting strategies. A review of new "green technology" initiatives recently adopted by Patent Offices around the world is also provided.

AS THE LOCAL electric generating plants increased in size and capacity and costs of producing electricity came down, it became apparent that it was no longer good economy to operate individual boiler plants at the Company's various collieries to power steam hoists and compressors. Great economies could be made by burning the Coal at central power plants and using electric power at the collieries. During the period after the end of the war, a steady and continuing programme of replacing first the smaller steam-driven units, and later the steam-driven compressors, was undertaken, and finally the larger hoists, those at No. 12 Colliery in New Waterford and No. 20 Colliery in Glace Bay, were the last units operated by steam.

"The VALMIN Code was developed and formally adopted by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) in 1995 and a revision was issued in 1998. The VALMIN Code applies to all relevant reports under the Australian Corporations Law, including submissions to the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).The VALMIN Code and Guidelines sets standards for the preparation and commissioning of independent assessment and/or valuation reports on mineral and petroleum assets or mineral and petroleum securities.It is mandatory for AusllvI:M's members to follow this Code in these relevant circumstances and failure to do so will result in serious sanction of the member by the Ausllvllvfs Ethics Committee. Public support for the use of this Code has been given by regulators (ASX/ASIC) and market participants ( eg major accountancy firms). It is also endorsed as a guide to general best practice in project assessment and valuation.This paper will discuss how the VALMIN Code has worked in practice over the past few years. It will also examine areas where the Code could be improved and how it could form the basis of a new Canadian Code for mineral property valuation."

Introduction The Sullivan mine, at Kimberley, B.C., is the principal source of ore for the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. Current production amounts to about 2,500,000 tons of lead-zinc ore a year. With approximately 1,600,000 feet of percussion drilling and 700,000 feet of diamond drilling being carried on each year, any improvements in drilling practice are important. Testing of new equipment and drill bits is a major function of the Testing Department at the mine. Tungsten carbide bits have been the subject of many tests since 1947 and have been used in operations since 1948. This paper details with the methods of testing and gives comparative data on performance and costs for tungsten carbide bits as compared to steel bits. Operational use of tungsten carbide bits started in April, 1948, and the extent of application has increased considerably since that time. The scale of employment is illustrated in Table I, which also shows other statistics on the use of carbide bits. Up to the present time eighteen types of carbide bits or tipped steel, as made by six different manufacturers, have been tested. In general, one supplier's bits have been used in operations, but some large-scale operational tests have been carried out with other types. The types tried are shown in Table II. To date they have been, the subject of 33 tests, covering the destruction of 804 bits over an observed footage of 42,586 feet.

A new rhcoforming processing of Al alloys with component shaping systems apart from slurry preparation systems is experimentally exploited, using the reversible multilevel-speed electromagnetic stirrer, the slurry transfer tool and its coating, the thin plate sample with five steps and rheocasting mould, all of which are independently developed. The results show that semi-solid A356 alloy slurry with shape factor of about 0.85 and particle size of 70~80 µm (under air-cooling condition) could be prepared in 20~25 s, fully meeting the production rate of high pressure die casting. The slurry could be smoothly transferred from the slurry preparation equipment to the rheocasting shot chamber while the slurry temperature of slurry decreases by no more than 3 . The tensile strength and elongation of the semi-solid rheocasting samples could be respectively increased by 11.6~18.2 % and 42.5~50 % compared with the traditional liquid die casting ones, and the rheoforming processing has close affinity with the traditional hot working processes.

Introduction Extensive undersea coal-mining has developed on both the east and west coasts of Canada, and at this time some four million tons, or 25 per cent of the total output of Canadian coal, representing a pit-mouth value of $14,000,000 per annum, is coming from coal seams lying under the sea. Of the coal now being mined in Nova Scotia, 55 per cent comes from under the sea, and this proportion is likely to increase. The Province of Nova Scotia is at this date receiving in royalties paid upon coal ?removed from undersea areas a sum exceeding $400,000 per annum. The subject is, therefore, one of special interest to the Mining Society of Nova Scotia and the Canadian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy, and while this paper will deal chiefly with undersea coal-mining in Nova Scotia, an attempt has been made to summarize the development of mining practice in the winning of undersea coal in other parts of the world, with the hope that such a recital may assist in the assessment of local problems. The connection between the mining of coal under the sea and an insular or maritime geography is obvious in regard to Great Britain, Japan, Vancouver Island, Australia, and Cape Breton Island, and also in regard to the curious conformation of Chile; the tendency towards growth of a mercantile marine and naval eminence is equally obvious where coal is mined at tidewater. But, there is the further and less favourable significance that the mining of coal under the sea is associated with poverty rather than with abundance of coal reserves.

Canadian steel foundry practice has made marked progress during the past decade. Equipment suppliers, development engineers, and foundry personnel have focussed their attention on every phase of the foundry operation, with a resulting lower demand on manpower and materials. Also, more rigid specification requirements as to dimensional tolerances and quality have necessitated improvement and increased control at every stage from the pattern shop to the cleaning room. The growing trend toward mechanization is clearly evident. Equipment such as sand mixers, sand reclamation systems, material handling devices, moulding machines, core blowers, etc., is being increasingly employed by the steel foundryman. This equipment not only increases production but also tends to lessen the human variable so prevalent and disconcerting in the early days of steel founding. The result has been an improved and more reliable steel casting, which is gradually obtaining wider acceptance by design engineers. The purpose of this paper is to discuss briefly some of the practices being used, and also the direction of development that is being pursued by Canadian steel foundrymen.

"This paper examines the economic advantages of adapting the production grade and recovery targets of a flotation circuit as a function of metal prices. The study is periormed using a steady state simulator for a Cu-Zn differential flotation circuit operating under the following strategies of 1) Maintaining constant operating targets, 2) Maximizing individual circuit Net Smelter Return and 3) Maximizing the global Cu-Zn circuit efficiency. Results are compared to assess whether or not one of the strategies produces benefits significantly higher than the others. "Rare earth elements (REE) are essential and unique components of many high-technology products without which functioning of modern society would be greatly impaired. Commercial deposits of REE are limited to a few geographical locations. Largely untapped sources of REE are available in endof- life (EOL) magnets, rechargeable batteries, and electronics. Presently, < 1% of REE in EOL wastes is recycled. Conversion of EOL wastes to liquid streams allows use of IBC’s Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) process to selectively recover, separate, and purify target REE and associated metals at g/L to mg/L or lower concentration levels. The MRT process together with its applications to separations of REE and associated metals in recycling as well as in mining are described. Economic and environmental advantages of MRT are presented. INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REE) include the lanthanide series (La-Lu), Y, and Sc. These elements are not rare, but concentrated minable deposits are scarce (Cordier 2012; Haxel, Hedrick, & Orris, 2002). Over 95 % of the world’s supply of REE is controlled by China (Hanson, 2011a) where they are mined, processed, and the pure elements incorporated into a growing number of consumer and military products. The consumer products are marketed worldwide. Since REE are vitally important in consumer and military products, this situation has caused other nations to scramble to develop the capability to produce their own supply (Cordier, 2012).In the U. S., Molycorp has reopened the Mountain Pass REE mine in California and production has begun (Goldenberg, 2010). Development of a reliable internal source of REE is of high national priority in the U.S. (Hanson, 2011b; Hess, 2012: “Obama Announces”, 2012). These elements have in recent decades been incorporated into new consumer and military products that are essential to our economy and defense. These products range from wind turbines, high performance magnets, hybrid car rechargeable batteries, energy efficient lighting electronics, flat screen televisions, and smart phones to advanced weapons systems (Haxel et al., 2002; Levkowitz & Beauchamp-Mustafaga, 2010)."

"Traditional geostatistical modelling methods are difficult to apply to heavy-tailed deposits because the extreme positive skew of the grade distribution leads to bias. The focus here is on an innovative method of modelling the high-grade population by conditionally simulating discrete volumes (nuggets) of gold with marked Poisson and Cox processes. Capping and other ad-hoc manipulation of the assay data is not required; however, an intensity map for the point processes is required. The method is demonstrated on a dataset from an epithermal deposit and demonstrates an improvement in reducing smearing and controlling the skew of the grade distribution.RÉSUMÉ Les méthodes traditionnelles de modélisation géostatistique sont difficiles à appliquer dans des gisements dont la distribution de la teneur est à queue lourde car l’extrême asymétrie positive de la distribution de la teneur génère des biais. Dans le présent article, l’accent est mis sur une méthode novatrice de modélisation de la population à haute teneur par la simulation conditionnelle des volumes discrets d’or (pépites) au moyen de procédés marqués de Poisson et de Cox. La limite d’utilisation et d’autres manipulations ad hoc des données ne sont pas requises; toutefois, il faut une carte des intensités pour le processus ponctuel. Since the 14th CMMI conference, held in Edinburgh in 1990, at which a paper was presented by the author (Willis, 1990) reviewing the role of integrating new technology as a survival strategy for South African gold mines, considerable change has occurred in the South African mining industry. This paper reviews the current state of the industry and provides an update on the technologies discussed ten years ago. It reviews available technology and provides a broad economic assessment of these technologies if they were to be introduced in an integrated mining system with a focus on deep level mining below 3000 m. It also reviews possible future technologies currently being researched and developed by CSIR: Division of Mining Technology (Miningtek).

A pressure acid leaching process has been developed for the extraction of metal values, nickel, copper, cobalt and zinc, from base metal smelter slags. The basic concept contemplates cooling the smelter slags through solidification sufficiently slowly to induce a good measure of crystallization; and subsequently, after fine grinding, to pressure leach such slags at around 250°C while applying oxygen overpressure, utilizing smelter byproduct sulphuric acid. High levels of extraction of the slags&apos; metal values are thereby achieved. It has been shown that if the same slags are quenched thereby producing an amorphous structure, the resulting metal extractions are very low. The process is applicable to smelting furnace throwaway/discard/dump slags, as well as to in-process converter slags. By extracting the bulk of the residual base metal values in the throwaway/discard/dump slags, the resulting leached residues are rendered virtually benign vis-à-vis the external environment.

The goal of this work was to select an appropriate electrode for dummy load of diesel engine in fully salt-water in the DESA factory. The electrochemical corrosion rate of general structural steel, commercial pure aluminum and cathode copper calculated as weighting, volumetric and commercial in fully salt-water by city power. After several tests and then applying the fuzzy logic method, it was determined that general structural steel is the best selection for this purpose.
