This paper discusses the major infrastructure elements required to support a typical Australian mining development. Infrastructure elements are grouped into four major types, urban planning, transportation, power and communications and water supply. The design criteria applying to individual elements within these groups are briefly discussed as well as order of magnitude cost estimates. The use of simulation models to test the capacity of existing rail networks, as well as novel sources of energy generation, are also described.

The transition from low stress to high stress conditions is a challenge eventually faced by most mines in Australia that extend to depths greater than (generally) about 1000 m. In areas with strongly adverse 'stress versus depth' gradients, such as some parts of Western Australia, significant stress-related problems have occurred at depths as shallow as 300 m below surface. The actual depth at which the 'transition' occurs is a function of the local pre-mining stress field, the strengths of the various rock types hosting the deposit and the layout and sequencing adopted in the mine. Stress-related damage can result in increased support costs, and delays associated with rehabilitation and disruption to production. In the worst case, where strong seismicity and associated damage occurs in active mining areas, 'exclusion' zones and 're-entry' protocols may be required. These can severely disrupt production. A key aspect of managing the transition is the recognition of the onset of stress-related ground behaviour. Damage mapping can be used to develop understanding of the relationships between mining activities and the local and regional response to them. Carefully documented case histories provide a basis for calibrating numerical models. This paper discusses some of the typical styles of ground behaviour observed in higher stress conditions in underground mines. A simple damage classification scheme is described to assist in 'damage mapping' of mine tunnels. An example of damage mapping is presented to illustrate an approach commonly used for recording stress-related damage.

"Several mine scheduling tools exist for use in optimising and scheduling the reserve according to in situ value. These tools generally value the ore on a per block basis according to regressed recovery models based on ore grade and type. It is then the task of the plant metallurgist to ensure that these ore blocks are fed to the plant in a manner that satisfies the prevailing plant constraints. This task is often completed in complex Excel® spreadsheets that are modified over time with factors applied to account for plant modifications or limitations.It is the authors’ experience that this approach is difficult to audit and replicate in a consistent manner. Furthermore, operational decisions, such as primary grind size or autoclave oxidation are made on the metallurgist or managements’ perceived optimum value and does not necessarily represent a cash flow based optimum.Many processing plants contain multiple internal constraints. As ore feed grades and properties change over the life-of-mine (LOM), processing-bottlenecks shift from one unit process to another and different operating strategies need to be adopted to maximise cash generation from the process.This paper presents a unified optimisation approach to scheduling ore based on a circuit mass balance to describe the process plant with individual models for each significant unit operation. The approach allows for optimisation over multiple input variables and the inclusion of linear and non-linear constraints.This optimisation process has been applied to different complex gold operations. The end result is an automated scheduler that selects the optimum blend of ores as well as plant operating conditions that satisfy all internal plant and shutdown constraints while maximising the objective of choice (metal production or cash flow). The models are also valuable for evaluating expansion or debottlenecking opportunities of individual processing units. Electronic detonators bring a fundamental and radical change to the potential of rockbreaking operations. The immense technical challenge of safely merging electronic systems with explosives has been largely overcome, but a surprisingly difficult obstacle has been to convert users to the much more capable electronic systems, in routine as opposed to exotic applications. Unit cost is probably the main point of resistance. For years papers have confirmed significant improvements in blasting results, feeding through to enhanced bottom line value for the whole operation: much reduced environmental impact, and improved control over fragmentation, muckpile shape and overbreak. In Africa, a number of operations have been employing the technology for sufficient time to see enduring improvements in throughput, control and cost structure, and these improvements have fed through to the planning process: both the cost and the benefits are part of the plan. This has essentially rendered very unattractive the option of reverting to pyrotechnic systems and incurring the penalties previously unseen but now understood to be avoidable. Examples given are of improved throughput at opencast and underground mines, and greatly extended life at an urban quarry. The general experience of management in implementing the technology is that it over-delivers: adopted to solve one particular problem, significant other issues are also addressed. These extra benefits were quite logical, but not at all obvious prior to implementation. Exploring this reality is essential for harvesting the benefits of the technology sooner rather than later.

Mt. Newman Mining Company Pty. Ltd.3 oper ates the Mt. Whaleback iron ore mine in the Ham- ersley Iron Ore Province of Western Australia. The present rate of production of high grade hematite iron ore is 33 million tonnes per year. Mining is by open cut quarrying,with 15m high benches. The present quarry operations will be extended to a large oval pit to win over 1400 million tonnes of iron ore. The pit slopes will extend up to 500m in depth and the perimet- er of the slopes will exceed 15km. Sixty per- cent of the ore is below the water table, which presently lies 45m below the general plain level Dames & Moore, rock mechanics consultants designed the pit slopes during early mine devel- opment to ensure an economic and safe operation.

The study of air-core dynamics in hydrocyclone operation is essential for predicting separation efficiency in mineral processing. Electrical resistance tomography (ERT) allows non-invasive measurements of hydrocyclone internal flow dynamics. Existing regularisation methods such as Gauss-Newton and TV norms rely on optimisation techniques which have very high computational cost for very fine meshes. In contrast, the monotonicity method has much lower computational cost as it does not solve such minimisation problems. In this paper, results from the monotonicity method, Gauss-Newton (GN) (Tikhonov) and Total-Variation (TV) norm-based minimisation methods for estimating the air-core diameter in hydrocyclones are compared. We study these methods on the laboratory hydrocyclone experimental two-phase flow data. The results obtained are validated against High-speed video (HSV) imaging and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) results. The results on different mesh sizes, in particular for very fine meshes with the number of cells ranging from 30 000 to above 100 000 are also investigated. The data used in this study is obtained from ITS Z8000 ERT system. This system does not measure the voltages on the current carrying electrodes. Since these voltage values are required for the monotonicity method, we implement an interpolation method to compute them. The results show that the monotonicity method provides a closer approximation of the interface between air and the water phases.

With the rapid development of the Chinese steel industry, the strong demand for iron ores has led to huge imports of various iron ores from all over the world. As a relatively new force in the iron ore world and an important raw material supplier, Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) has achieved an annualised production rate of 100 Mt of iron ore fines. Typical blends were designed to simulate sinter blends employed in Chinese steel mills, and to determine sintering properties and metallurgical performance of blends comprising FMG Rocket fines in pilot sinter pot. It is shown that the sinter of typical blends comprising 15 - 20 per cent rocket fines possesses excellent sintering properties and metallurgical performance. With Rocket fines substitution for competitor ores in a typical customer mill blend comprising fully imported fines, the sinter productivity and tumble index increased from 1.45 t/m2h and 62.0 per cent to 1.54 t/m2h and 64.0 per cent, respectively, while attaining similar reducibility index and reduction degradation index at lower solid fuel consumption.CITATION:Zhu, D, Guo, Z, Ooi, T C, Chun, T, Pan, J and Young, J M, 2013. Producers of primary resources such as iron ore face the challenge of processing crude materials with increasing levels of impurities, which may result in the requirement for wet processing. This results in a significant increase in water usage, power consumption and operating costs. Removing sulfur and phosphorus from molten iron can be expressed by the following reactions, respectively. [S]Fe + (O2-)slag = (S2-)slag + [O]Fe [P]Fe + (3/2) (O2-)slag + (5/2) (FeO)slag = (PO43-)slag + (5/2) Fe(liquid) These equations indicate that desulfurisation and dephosphorisation have opposite oxygen potential conditions. If a small amount of desulfurisation slag not removed is carried over to dephosphorisation process, the reaction of sulfur mentioned above proceeds toward left hand resulting in increasing sulfur content in molten iron. For better understanding of such re-sulfurisation reaction in hot metal pre-treatments, the present study aimed at evaluating the effect of iron oxide on the sulfur distribution ratio between slag and hot metal. To measure sulfide capacities and FeO activities simultaneously at temperatures below the melting point of pure iron, CaO-SiO2-FeO and CaO-Al2O3-FeO ternary molten slags were brought into equilibria with copper-iron-sulfur liquid alloys, and the equilibrium oxygen partial pressures were determined with an electrochemical technique involving the stabilised zirconia solid electrolyte. The experimental results showed that the sulfide capacity increased with an increase in FeO content, and this trend was consistent with the fact that FeO was basic. Although the addition of FeO raised the FeO activity and oxygen potential, the calculated value for sulfur distribution ratio between slag and hot metal increased with increasing FeO content.

Northern Star Resources (NSR) operates several operations utilising narrow vein stoping operations in the Kundana area. Stope dilution performance is variable across these operations, with unplanned dilution reducing individual stope economic viability, increasing risk to personnel and machinery operating in and around the stope and delaying the overall stoping sequence. Technical investigations were undertaken to objectively understand the variables which had the largest impact on stope performance and then use the findings to help develop mining strategies to reduce dilution. A stope reconciliation process was developed to compile key stope performance information such as stope design parameters, geotechnical and drill and blast factors. These were compared against the measured dilution. Production targets necessitated a high turnover of stopes in the operations, and hence a requirement for an expeditious process and mine design software with automated tools. The output of these results, together with numerical variables from geological, geotechnical and drill and blast data were analysed via multivariate regression. The analysis identified the factors with the greatest influence over stope dilution, and a forecast model was consequently created. Confidence was gained in the model when the subsequent stopes performed in line with prediction. Different drill and blast designs were subsequently trialled and found to reduce dilution. The model was then updated with the new practices, facilitating further regression analysis to identify revised key controlling factors. The subsequent production results however, displayed a poor correlation with the prediction from the revised model. Inconsistencies in drill and blast designs and execution were identified as key factors in the dilution performance. This was an important finding as the correct implementation of the design is critical and this has become a key focus for future stoping. Overall the technique presents an objective process to identify causal factors of stope dilution resulting in improved economic metrics for stope production. The process will be applied to other similar Northern Star operations.

Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill control is complex and depends on many dynamic process variables. Good control strategies ensure that a mill is operating as close to optimal as possible, resulting in significant economic benefits to an operation. Pueblo Viejo, a gold mine in the Dominican Republic, has been actively improving their control strategies since start-up in 2012, and one of these initiatives was to install an acoustic monitoring system on the SAG mill. The data from the system is used to optimise the mill’s performance by limiting the time the mill is either running too quiet or too loud. The lower limit is an indication that the charge in the mill is too high for efficient breakage or that the mill speed is too low and grinding media are not striking the toe of the charge. Conversely, when the acoustic emissions from the mill are too high, this can indicate that the balls are striking above the toe of the charge, resulting in inefficient grinding and excessive liner and lifter wear. Adjusting mill operating conditions to keep acoustic emissions in the ‘sweet spot’ between these limits results in more efficient grinding.Pueblo Viejo installed a Metso SmartEar™ to monitor the acoustic emissions of their SAG mill in January 2013. This system has been installed on many mills around the world and is specifically designed for optimising SAG mill control. One system output is the impact counter which measures steel-on-steel impacts on the mill shell. The impact counter uses both frequency and time domain analysis to approximate the number of ball impacts per minute. This method of analysis excludes parts of the sound signal not associated with steel-on-steel impacts and gives an accurate measure of this critical control parameter. After the acoustic system was installed, Pueblo Viejo collected data to determine the upper and lower limits for the impact count variable. The live data is available to the mill operators and it is used as one of the key operating variables to control the mill.Through continuous improvement and the use of advanced technologies like SmartEar™, Pueblo Viejo are improving the control and operation of their SAG mill, resulting in reduced liner wear, more efficient mill performance and optimised energy consumption. In the present work, the microstructure and mechanical properties of structural mortar from glass insulators were studied by X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, microhardness and compression testings. The investigated glass insulators were manufactured between the 1960 and 1990 years and had been used in 230 kV transmission lines. The results evidenced that the structural mortar of glass insulator was replaced from Portland to aluminous cement along the years. The crystalline phases of the mortar were identified and mechanical properties were correlated.

Codelco Chile is currently developing the El Teniente û New Mine Level Project (NMLP) in order to increase ore production by seeking to mine the ore deposit located under the current operational orebody. Reserves of 2000 million tonnes (Mt) have been quantified, which will be extracted as from the year 2017 by using the panel caving and progressive sinking method. Codelco and SKM Minmetal (SKM) jointly developed the project prefeasibility stage (PFS), closing these studies in March 2008. The first part of the project approach is to replace mine production currently feeding the Colon concentrator facilities with 137 000 tonnes per day (t/d), focusing attention on a production increase from the year 2026 up to 180 000 t/d. Project efforts have also been centred on maximising the contribution of new technologies for both construction and operational phases of the New Mine Level, together with selecting the best mine infrastructure to keep El Teniente operations going on for the next 50 years. Implicit in this is the inherent improvement of a variety of current Mina El Teniente process and management practices. The plan is to reduce actual mine operational risks and take advantage of new opportunities afforded by the project, which is in effect a greenfield project with respect to the implementation of fundamental changes in the labour and business environment. In addition, issues related to human resources, maintenance and management, materials handling, establishing centralised operations and accesses, automation and remote operations control and power efficiency could also be addressed. The project, beyond the New Mine Level exploitation, considers the mineÆs future potential, with a second deeper exploration in prospect named Deep Level. Finally, the project identifies features that would add value to the mine operations, in an initiative named æSpace for Future TechnologiesÆ. This will allow the eventual implementation of new electrical equipment and the application of mechanised technologies and other process improvements for the mine development.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore is one of the world’s premier suppliers of iron ore. It currently has operations in Western Australia and Brazil and also has some iron ore interests in West Africa.BHP Billiton’s Optimisation R&D team has developed a proprietary mine planning optimisation tool that uses a mixed integer linear programming (MILP). This tool is called Blasor and it is used to rapidly evaluate the resource development potential (RDP) scenarios for the company’s business development strategy. In addition it generates life of asset (LOA) mine plans for the company’s operations and growth projects. The Blasor optimiser maximises the discounted operating cash fl ow (DCF) as the objective function, subject to mining, processing and transportation capacity constraints and blended product quality constraints. The paper will outline how Blasor has been applied to the resource development potential (RDP) strategy scenario studies, growth project evaluations and LOA mine planning within BHP Billiton Iron Ore.The practical application of Blasor to resource planning optimisation within BHP Billiton Iron Ore has demonstrated the value of such a tool for optimising strategic directions through the evaluation of a number of carefully proposed scenarios and maximisation of operational decisions, such as cut-off grade, open pit development sequence, etc. Particularly for the company’s business development direction studies, Blasor plays the role of a fair valuation tool in that it discovers the most valuable resource development scenario, thus establishing a sound basis for comparing the economic merits of each scenario.

It is not often that mines have as much warning of the approach of bad ground conditions as was the case at the Western Mining Corporation, Kambalda Nickel Operations Lafranchi/Schmitz Decline. Most aspects of this operation are in fact quite unique and like the best solutions, the answer to the problem of weak and foliated ground conditions was relatively simple; requiring the use of readily available explosives although the idea of using it in this manner may not be the most obvious.The use of high shock energy POWERGEL 2131 cartridges proved to be the correct answer, in conjunction with small changes in drill pattern design. The resulting lack of overbreak bears testimony to the success of the concept and the commitment of the miners to achieving a safe working environment.

Other features are an aging and retiring ‘Baby Boomer’ generation, coupled with a low uptake of new graduates and the uncertainty in predicting future capital expenditure programs and requirements. Combine this with a reluctance of cash-poor operations to modernise and adapt in an environment of low metal prices, and there is a real uncertainty in how service providers will meet industry needs as they evolve.The industry that supports operations and new projects is suffering a rapid decline in the currently severely curtailed capital investment environment. These embrace a whole gamut of agile alternatives in the areas of partnering, alliances, commercial and shared risk models and mutual innovations. These will be discussed with some case studies and suggested approaches.Particular emphasis will be upon brownfield expansions and upgrades which have emerged recently as a preferred lower capital and focused way to achieve best practical outcome at lowest cost. There are a number of specific features of such brownfields projects including the requirement for very close cooperation between the execution team, operators, maintenance and suppliers and a maximum usage of site resources and ingenuity. Often, required investment hurdle rates are high, downtime allowed is minimal and site resources usage is maximised. This requires mutual trust, good planning and high health, safety, environment and community (HSEC) standards and practice. In many ways the practices and skills needed are the exact opposite of the historical ‘big greenfields’ project with which the industry has been geared for more recently.Another developing area has been with innovative commercial models and practices. These have been as a direct result of the more challenging investment criteria being adopted and the relative hunger of service providers. It has become more common to look at these commercial/costing alternatives very early in the project cycle as an essential project tool and not just as a possible option. These commercial solutions cover such alternatives as leasing and rental, deferred payments, build–own–operate–transfer (BOOT) and build–own–operate (BOO), whole-of-mine preferred spares and maintenance terms, and aggressive performance targets with real assurance penalties. In response to concerns over greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and an imposed cost in some jurisdictions, many mining houses have committed to reductions in their GHG emissions. However, mining faces particular challenges in this regard, notably from increasing strip ratios. Furthermore, mining activity around the globe is not expected to decrease in the foreseeable future as mineral demand is driven up by the aspirations of rapidly-developing nations. Novel approaches will thus be needed if any reductions in energy consumption and GHG emissions of mining are to be achieved.This paper presents some directions for the mining industry to pursue in reducing their GHG impact, focusing on the difference that blasting methods can make. Importantly, large productivity and revenue gains can also be realised from these methods.Key directions considered here include optimising resource recovery and quality through:reducing coal damage and loss from throw blastingrecovering thin coal seamsproducing cleaner coal with less dilution.Blast design can also significantly improve the productivity of surface mining by:improving muck pile shapingimproving mine equipment productivityimproving scheduling.We show how a particular blasting method can eliminate coal loss in overburden throw blasting and can lead to large increases in coalmine profitability. Thin seams that were previously wasted can also be recovered with this method. Furthermore, the method has been implemented to combine several separate drill and blast cycles into a single cycle, leading to productivity gains.An illustrative example is given to show how increased coal recovery can increase revenues and more than offset any potential GHG emissions liabilities. The perceived and actual impact of government mineral policy upon the government share from gold mining revenues is assessed for ten key countries in which the gold sector is of relevance in advancing economic growth. Five African and five South American jurisdictions are considered, namely Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, South Africa and Tanzania from Africa; and Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guyana and Peru in South America.Both the headline corporate income tax rate and royalty level are identified as poor indicators for the total government share. In addition, significant differences between industry perception and actual government tax levels are identified by this study. The quantitative financial analysis shows that there is no clear relationship between individual taxation rates, taken in isolation, and the overall average effective tax rate (AETR) paid by the project over its life. Neither companies nor governments should use individual taxation rates, or industry perceptions, in isolation to assess the overall competitiveness or equity of a country’s minerals taxation regime – such analysis can be very misleading.In this study, the perceived impact is determined from the well-established Fraser Institute survey published each year, and in 2014 compared 122 minerals jurisdictions globally. The actual impact is determined from quantitative modelling of the financial performance of a hypothetical gold mining project in each country. The technical parameters of the project are held constant; instead the differing mineral policies in each jurisdiction are applied to determine the resultant impact upon the relative share of the economic rents delivered to both private and public sectors.
