Process mineralogy provides the mineralogical information required by geometallurgists to address the inherent variation of geological data. The successful beneficiation of ores mostly depends on the ability of mineral processing to be efficiently adapted to the ore characteristics, liberation being one of the most relevant mineralogical parameters. The liberation characteristics of ores are intimately related to mineral texture. Therefore, the characterisation of liberation necessarily requires the identification and quantification of those textural features with a major bearing on mineral liberation. From this point of view, grain size, bonding between mineral grains and intergrowth types are considered the most influential textural attributes. While the quantification of grain size is a usual output of automated current technologies, information about grain boundaries and intergrowth types is usually descriptive and difficult to quantify to be included in the geometallurgical model.Aiming at the systematic and quantitative analysis of the intergrowth type within mineral particles, a new methodology based on digital image analysis has been developed. In this work, the ability of this methodology to achieve a more complete characterisation of liberation is explored by the analysis of chalcopyrite in the rougher concentrate of the Kansanshi copper-gold mine (Zambia). Results obtained show that the method provides valuable textural information to achieve a better understanding of mineral behaviour during concentration processes. The potential of this method is enhanced by the fact that it provides data unavailable using current technologies. An alternative process for desorbing and recovering metals from activated carbon has been developed, and is the subject of several patent applications by Micron Research (W.A.) The system uses the principle of conditioning the carbon in a strong alkaline cyanide solution followed by distillation desorption in a fractionating column, using the carbon as the column packing and methanol as the desorbing agent. The system offers the following advantages : (a) The processes of desorption, methanol recovery and reactivation are all carried out in a single column with the carbon itself acting as the column packing. No other desorption plant items or fractional distillation equipment are required. (b) The metal values are concentrated into the water content of the carbon and no other water is used except as condenser coolant. This produces very high grade gold silver solutions which give high current efficiencies in the electrowinning step. These high gold concentrations allow almost complete separation of gold and silver from copper in the electrolytic cell. (c) The process is completed to a tailing assay of less than 200g Au/tonne carbon in 15 - 20 hours allowing turn around of carbon batches on a daily Basis.

Golden Crown Mine is a narrow vein gold mine producing 75000 tpa. Production has been predominantly by shrink stoping using hand held machine and airleg. Bogging from these stopes is done with Toro 150 LHD units.Previously the standard development method consisted of developing a sill drive, a footwall drive and millholes every 7 m. This meant that for every metre of ore development, 2 m of waste development was required.

The typical management systems used to address the issue of operating risk centre around technologies that identify, analyse and evaluate the risk factors. These logical systems such as HAZOPs, Fault Tree Analyses, etc rely heavily on technical considerations and process flow analysis. However, several research projects, across industries and countries have clearly shown that up to 80 per cent `operating risk' is determined by the actions of workers, supervisors and managers. Yet, most of the focus of risk management is on technical and procedural issues. This suggests that a significant imbalance exists in our management systems and that industries are unlikely to show significant improvement on current levels of safety performance. Effective risk management must include the intangible element of the organisation psychology towards risk. A practical and theoretically sound approach had been researched and developed in and for the mining industry. This paper describes the approach and methodologies applied at the Cosmo Howley Gold Mine in the Northern Territory, where an inclusive approach to managing financial and operating risk was followed. The Cosmo Howley Mine showed a dramatic reduction in lost time injuries and improvements in financial indices - providing conclusive evidence of the link between management effectiveness, safety and productivity. This `triangle' has often been the subject of speculation and theory. It is demonstrated in this paper how the management team of Cosmo Howley focused their practices and systems on the improvement of organisational dynamics, ensured tangible and clear focus on parameters of costs and safety and how the improvement process was managed. It is concluded that the improvement process did not require a `major re-engineering' of the organisation. The organisation culture changes that occurred were incremental, planned and effective. It entailed the implementation of sound risk management methodologies, and ensured that a significant emphasis was placed on an aspect that is defined as `organisational dynamics'.

A fully instrumented and bench-mounted diamond drilling machine, purpose designed and built, has been used for investigating the effect of aqueous solutions of various chemical compounds when used as drilling fluids. The rocks investigated were andesite, basalt and granite, the chemical compounds were alkylamines, with various hydrocarbon chain lengths, aluminium chloride and dioxane. Rotation speed seems to be one of the major factors affecting the emergence of mechanochemical effects as the results obtained with aluminium chloride clearly indicate. Penetration rate is either unaf- fected or enhanced by the presence of certain compounds, such as aluminium chloride. On the other hand, penetration rate diminishes when the drilling fluid contains dioxane and exhibits an apparently unpredictable behaviour with alkylamine solutions, although it appears that an increase in hydrocarbon chain length usually equates to an increase in penetration 1. Rock texture seems to have a pronounced effect on test repeatability. With hexadecy- lamine acetate solutions in concentrations ranging from 10-5 to 5 .10-4 molò dm 3 and 41.88 radòs-1 rotation speed, 46 % increments in penetration rate of andesite were observed, with respect to water, whereas penetration rate decreased in basalt by as much as 60¦%o when a dioxane solution was used as drilling fluid. An interpretation of the observed effects is proposed in the light of current knowledge of solid state physics and physical Chemistry.

During the past 18 months a rock mechanics project has been in operation at Renison Limited. The project was established to identify and investigate key problem areas that would affect future production at the Renison mine. An in-house approach was adopted, using shall compact equignent, to investigate ground behaviour. Information on the rock stress field was considered to be particularly important for an understanding of ground behaviour. A high horizontal stress component exists, which enables large flat dipping spans of hanging wall to be opened up, with support being provided by post pillars. The amount of support provided by these post pillars has been found to be low.

Over the past decade, the mining industry has come to recognise the importance of water both to itself and to others. Water accounting is a formalisation of this importance that quantifies and communicates how water is used by individual sites and the industry as a whole. While there are a number of different accounting frameworks that could be used within the industry, the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs (MCA) water accounting framework (WAF) is an industry-led approach that provides a consistent representation of mine site water interactions regardless of their operational, social or environmental context that allows for valid comparisons between sites and companies.The WAF contains definitions of off-site water sources and destinations and on-site water use, a methodology for applying the definitions, and a set of metrics to measure site performance. The WAF is comprised of two models: the input-output model, which represents the interactions between sites and their surrounding community, and the operational model, which represents on-site water interactions.Members of the MCA have recently adopted the WAFÆs input-output model to report on their external water interactions in their Australian operations, with some adopting it on a global basis. To support this adoption, there is a need for companies to better understand how to implement the WAF in their own operations. Developing a water account is non-trivial, particularly for sites unfamiliar with the WAF or for sites with the need to represent unusual features. Pbo activities have been measured in conventional blast furnace and direct smelting type slags at 1200¦C. Much higher activity coefficients than previously measured have been obtained and attributed to interactions between iron and lead oxides. The behaviour of PbO in the two types of slag reflects their relative silica contents. Simple equations derived from mathematical modelling work are presented for the prediction of Pbo activities in complex industrial slags.

The discovery since 1990 of four major orebodies in the Mt Isa Inlier - Century Zn-Pb, Osborne Cu-Au, Cannington Pb-Zn and Ernest Henry Cu-Au - only serves to enhance the already high stature of the Inlier in world mining importance. Currently the known mineral resources of the Inlier represent about 11 per cent of the world's Pb-Zn resources, five per cent of the world's Ag resources, and one per cent of the world's Cu resources. More can be expected to be added to these impressive figures given that two-thirds of the Inlier remains obscured by younger cover. Individually, projects such as Century and Cannington may ultimately achieve `world's best' status; Century's proposed production of 450 000 tpa of Zn metal would rank it close to number one with Cominco's expanded Red Dog project in Alaska. Cannington, with projected production of 660 tpa Ag, could become the world's biggest producer of silver. For comparison, Mt Isa produced 170 000 t of zinc metal and 335 t of silver in 1995. The apparent physical diversity of deposits in the Mt Isa Inlier is matched by a great diversity of opinion as to their origins. Because Ernest Henry is hosted by `porphyries', it is described by some as a porphyry copper deposit, despite mineralisation age possibly post-dating volcanic age by 200 Ma. Cannington Pb-Zn could be a Broken Hill-type (BHT) exhalitive deposit, or a late epigenetic replacement `regional skarn'. Mt Isa - Hilton Pb-Zn deposits appear to have experienced all deformational events and he syn-diagenetic in origin, or may have experienced little of the above and be epigenetic replacement deposits formed late in the major Isan orogeny, some 150 Ma after deposition.

Since pyrite is a semiconductor, the relationship between the leaching rate and the semiconducting properties is of interest. In order to investigate this relationship, a pyrite concentrate (95% FeS2) was oxidized at 90¦C (363 K) in an acid solution containing 100 g/dm3 H2SO4 and 1.0 to 25.1 g/dm3 total Fe. The suspension potential (Pt vs. SCE) was maintained at the desired values, within the range 0.40 to 0.70 V, by controlled additions of a KMn04 solution during leaching. The results were analyzed using a simplified kinetic expression. The rate constant was independent of the Fe concentration, while it increased with suspension potential. Partly oxidized samples were then prepared at varying fractions of reaction. After removing the elemental sulphur formed, they underwent thermoelectric power measurements using a packed bed lying in a temperature gradient. The value of thermo- electric power increased from about 0 to 30 pV/K in the early stages of oxidation. The results obtained are compared with those for chalco- pyrite reported in a previous paper.

Geological information plays a significant, cost effective role, in the Mt Whaleback iron ore mining operations. The geology and structure are complex. Good communication between the Mine Planning Production Scheduling and Quality Control Sections is the key to utilisation of geological information to its full potential.Drilling and pit face mapping are the two basic sources of detailed data sets which are processed to prepare up to date geological cross sections and benchwise geological plans. This information is used directly for the blast pattern design and production scheduling. Physical ore type estimation is also undertaken. Orebody models are generated from the geological information.

Gunpowder Copper Limited processes 1,000 tonne/day of Mammoth ore in a conventional flot- ation concentrator. Run of mine ore is prepared for flotation by three stages of crushing and two stages of ball milling. The concentrate, in which the primary copper mineral is chalcocite, is solar dried and exported to Japan. The history of operation is summarised, and plant practice and metallurgical problems are discussed.

The Porgera Joint Venture and Dyno Nobel have commissioned a joint project to optimise the drill and blast operations to increase the overall profitability of the mine. One of the aims of this project is to increase the throughput of semi autogenous (SAG) mills by optimising the blast fragmentation. A number of test blasts were conducted during the period May 2000 to January 2002 and the ore from these blasts was campaigned through the mill. The data from these trials suggested up to 15 per cent increase in the SAG mill throughput with high energy blast designs. However, changes in ore geology (shape, structure and hardness) and potential ore dilution/loss and wall damage have raised concerns about the economic benefits of these designs over the entire orebody. The lack of a system to track the economic benefits of these modified designs has also compounded these concerns. PJV and DynoConsult, the consulting arm of Dyno Nobel have initiated steps to minimise the potential for ore dilution and wall damage resulting from these modified designs. DynoConsult worked with Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) to develop and implement a blast management system to track the quality of blast implementation and down stream process benefits. This paper discusses the implementation of the system and the results achieved to date.

This study presents the procedure of mine modelling and reserve evaluation by means of statistics, computer interpolation methods and aerophotography interpretation. All data are from Carbonifera Treviso, Laura Muller City, Santa Catarina State, southernmost Brazil. From 22 bore holes and nine trenches opened in the coal seam outcrops, a data base including level references and thickness of all rock formations was created.Using this information, basic statistic analysis was carried out, showing that there are three different populations (three modal distribution). These populations defined three geological blocks with different characteristics of overburden removal and mining methodology. This mathematical approach for analysing geological data is very important for correct mine planning and complementary prospection.

A program of microseismic noise monitor ing for gas outbursts, in conjunction with other mining engineering measurements and observations, is being undertaken at Leichhardt colliery in Queensland. Headings are developed at present by shotfiring. The equipment being used in this study includes piezoelectric accelerometer assemblies to detect microseismic noise which is then transmitted to a surface base station by cable. Data are recorded on an analogue magnetic tape recorder and are also analysed on-line using a commercially-available acoustic emission pulse analyser. It is proposed to re-interpret recorded data using various modes of analysis and to interface a desktop computer to the existing system to permit continuous monitoring on the mine site. No outbursts have been recorded or analysed and only a limited number of develop- ment shots, and the resultant microseismic activity, have been recorded to date.

Tectonic subsidence plots have been calculated for well, extrapolated-well and significant off-well (seismically-based) locations in the Vulcan Sub-basin and adjacent highs (western Timor Sea). The subsidence curves have been normalized to a common datum, the distinctive "near top Permian" marker, and corrected for sediment compaction, palaeobathymetry, eustatic sea-level change and loading effects.Four principal phases of post-Permian basin development are recognised and quantitatively described by integrating the results of the sub-sidence analysis into the regional (e.g. recent Ocean Drilling Program-derived) framework of the tectonic evolution of the North West Shelf. They are1. the Triassic-mid Jurassic Westralian Superbasin intracratonic phase,2. the late Jurassic-early Cretaceous North West Shelf rift phase,3. the mid Cretaceous-Palaeogene North West Shelf subsidence phase, and4. the Neogene-present Timor collision phase. Rapid Triassic tectonic subsidence occurred in an intracratonic setting, possibly subsequent to aborted late Palaeozoic rifting. Intracratonic sub-sidence mechanisms such as deep crustal metamorphism and/or intrustion and regional tectonic compression are invoked in addition to any post-rift thermal subsidence which may have occurred.

A two year program of research into the feasibility of long-hole drilling for improved gas emission control has been undertaken at Appin Colliery. State of the art equipment was employed involving cableless electronic surveying and down-hole motor drilling. The project involved the drilling of 1000 m long, in-seam boreholes in the Bulli seam and boreholes of similar length drilled cross measure and then in-seam along the underlying Balgownie seam. A new concept for gas drainage was defined, employing long-holes for both predrainage and post drainage.

The Blackwater Coal Mine is a modern open cut operation using large draglines for over- :)urden removal and shovels, loaders and trucks to mine and haul coal to the crushing and coal ?reparation plant. Operations at the mine are described in sequence following through overburden removal to the railing of product coal from the mine site. The close operating connection between the mine and washery, which results from the blending of raw coal into clean product via the qashplant bypass system, is stressed. Some features of special interest at Blackwater Mine, such as land reclamation and slope stability,are outlined.

Carbonate-hosted massive sulfide ores of the American cordillera compose a distinctive genetic class. Discordant fea-tures of occurrence together with measured high-temperatures of formation indicate their essential epigenetic character and close spatial association with centers of thermal activity during evolution of the cordillera. Their metallogenic character is complex from region to region: Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag, Pb-Zn-Ag, and Cu-Zn-Ag-Au represent extremes of composition and each may be identified with specific terranes of occurrence, notwithstand-ing an inferred common process of formation. Beyond the presence of a thermal center, other controls that may be identi-fied include apparent but obscure properties of primary perme-ability or chemistry of hosting strata, and secondary controls are imposed by stratigraphic differences in which permeability is strongly contrasted. Structures that act as channelways may be identified in some instances. Notwithstanding their intrinsic value, search for these ores is difficult and requires the solution of complex geochemical and three-dimensional geometric problems.

At the Highway gold deposit, 37 kilometres south of Charters Towers, gold mineralisation occurs in several stratiform layers and is enriched near the surface by lateritic weathering. The host rocks of the mineralisation are ferruginous and baritic, intensely sericitised, kaolinised and silicified rhyolitic tuffs and pyroclastics of the Cambrian-Ordovician Mount Windsor Volcanics. The geology of the deposit is illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.Forty-six reverse circulation percussion drill holes were completed by North-Queensland Resources N.L. for a total of 2,093 metres of drilling to further outline and test the open pit resource. The drilling indicated a resource of 171,000 tonnes averaging 4.4 grams per tonne gold and 5.0 grams per tonne silver.A shallow initial pit, approximately 30 metres deep, has been designed to mine the high grade upper portion of the western stratiform layer and part of the eastern layer. This initial pit is designed to mine 45,400 tonnes of western mineralisation at an average grade of 7.84 grams per tonne gold and 22,200 tonnes of eastern mineralisation at an average grade of 1.42 grams per tonne gold. Waste is estimated at 110,900 tonnes.
