With a view to characterising activated carbons with respect to their ability to adsorb gold from cyanide solutions, an attempt was made to establish correlations between the equilibrium capacity constant of the activated carbon for gold (k value) and five other parameters. These parameters were percentage ash content, iodine number, methylene blue value, surface area, and pH respectively. Twenty four different proprietary brand activated carbon products were examined, the correlations being established by means of linear regression analysis. It was shown that a significant correlation only existed between k and pH value. This was interpreted in terms of the presence of oxide complexes on the activated carbon surface. Further test specifications as developed at the Anglo American Research Laboratories are also outlined with a view to the selection of activated carbons suitable for use in' a carbon-in-pulp operation. Methods for assessing both the capacity and the kinetic response of carbons for gold adsorption are presented, while the measurement of attrition resistance, particle size distribution and moisture and solubles content is also outlined. The measurement of the capacity constant for gold adsorption together with attrition resistance are considered to be necessary in the initial selection of a suitable carbon.

Alternative processes for converting coal to liquid products and their stage of development are outlined. The merits of hydrogenationprocesses in general, and the solvent refined coal process in particular, are stressed. Bench scale experimental hydrogenation procedures used by the Australian Coal Industry Research Laboratories Ltd. (ACIRL) to study the liquefaction of Australian coals and correlations between properties of such coals and their conversion to liquid products are described. Factors involved in assessing investment and operating costs for modern hydrogenation based coal refineries of different capacities are described with reference to a recent study undertaken in N.S.W. The significance of coal properties such as yield and yield structure of total liquid products and how they and other factors can influence the economics of the coal refining operations are discussed.

Froth flotation is one of the most widely used beneficiation processes for fine and ultrafine coals and minerals. Maintaining optimal metallurgical performance in industrial flotation operation is still a challenging task owing to the lack of an effective tool to diagnose the flotation performance in realtime. For this purpose, a number of flotation performance monitoring systems with different working principles have been developed to provide instant feedback for process control and optimisation. In this paper, for the first time, five different flotation performance monitoring systems were systematically compared through an on-site trial in a coking coal flotation plant in Queensland, Australia. The monitoring systems were used to measure (i) gas holdup, (ii) overflowing froth velocity, (iii) overflowing froth height, (iv) air recovery and (v) drag force exerted by overflowing froth, in an industrial flotation column and the outputs of these systems were collected simultaneously at a wide range of operating conditions. For each monitoring system, the best regression model describing the correlation between the system output and the flotation performance was selected from various regression models (eg linear, quadratic, power-law and logarithmic) using the Akaike information criterion (AIC). A comparison of the coefficient of determination (R2 ), residual sum of squares (RSS) and measuring accuracy at 95 per cent confidence level of the best regression models of these monitoring systems suggested that the drag sensor outperformed the other systems at a wide range of flotation operating conditions. The superior performance of the drag sensor was attributed to its distinctive design that enabled intimate sensing of variation of the overflowing froth properties. Furthermore, the drag sensor had the ability to monitor feed ash content variation when the other operation variables were set almost constant.

Effective exploration, testing and analysis is essential for good process design and optimisation of coal preparation plants. Coal processing relies on the sizing and washability characteristics of the particular coal to define the most cost effective design to meet the market requirements. Flowsheet development and equipment selection is dependent on the natural quality characteristics of the coal, its physical properties and the value of the final product in its market. The methodology of process selection and the key elements in design are discussed. Coal is consumed in two general markets: ò steaming coal - both domestic and export, and ò metallurgical coal. This paper discusses the typical economic analysis required to evaluate the potential for, and cost benefit of, providing the flexibility to switch coals between markets. A case study illustrates the methodology of process selection in a typical high value metallurgical coal.

A geostatistical study was made of diamond drill hole intersections within 18CC stope block at the C.S.A. Mine, Cobar, N.S.W. The stope block is located in 18CC orebody which is a massive sulphide - multiple vein, Copper-Zinc type, lacking clear definition on gangue mineralogy, base-metal assays and total sulphide considerations. Of the variograms constructed for inter- section width and copper, lead and zinc grades and accumulations, only zinc displayed behaviour amenable to model fitting and kriging procedures. Zinc grades were calcu- lated for sub-blocks comprising the total stope block and comparison with equivalent grades determined by traditional methods showed them to be generally less extreme in the highest and lowest grade sub-blocks. The total-block grades derived by the two methods were almost the same. It is suggested that the failure of copper to show variogram continuity might reflect the difficulty in defining the actual 18CC orebody, a proposition which is supported by the poor continuity in the variogram of horizontal width. In the case of lead the poor continuity may be due to the frequent manner of occurrence of galena as coarse grained patches of limited extent. The results of the study, did not provide a convincing reason to depart from the traditi- onal methods of grade estimation at the C.S.A. Mine.

Gold-quartz and antimony-gold-quartz veins in the Hodgkinson Province are hosted by subgreenschist to greenschist facies metasediments and show no spatial association with granitic rocks. They commonly parallel axial plane foliations or occur in brittle to brittle-ductile shear zones. Detailed mapping in the Hodgkinson goldfield indicates that vein systems are isolated in distinct structural and lithologic domains by post-mineralization faulting. Gold-quartz and antimony-gold-quartz veins have distinctive mesoscopic textures characteristic of the mesothermal vein environment. Some of the antimony-gold-quartz veins are located on domain boundaries which truncate the gold mineralization. In. some areas, tin and tungsten-tin mineralization which are spatially related to Late Palaeozoic granitoids appear to postdate the gold-quartz and antimony-gold-quartz mineralization.Oxygen and hydrogen isotopic studies of vein and alteration assemblages associated with these diverse ores provide constraints on fluid sources and have implications for the origin of mesothermal gold mineralization. The available isotopic data are consistent with a dominantly magmatic source for tin and tungsten-tin mineralization although there is evidence of a late-stage meteoric component in some tin-mineralizing systems. Alcoa of Australia's Del Park mining op eration is centred 9 km. east of the Pinjarra alumina refinery, and is centrally locatedwith- in the 10, 000 sq. km. lease which the Company holds for bauxite in the Darling Ranges. An- other mining operation is situated near the township of Jarrahdale, and supplies bauxite to the Kwinana refinery. Definition of the bauxite ore, development works and mining to the ore haulage stage, are identical for both mining operations. Exper- ience, and production cost figures, obtained from the Jarrahdale mine, where 100 tonne trucks are used to haul ore to a fixed crushing plant, led to the development of the Del Park mining concept with increased mobility of op- erations. The crushing-conveying-stockpiling arrangement at Del Park consists of a 1200 t. p. h. mobile crusher feeding bauxite to an overland conveyor system which transports the ore approximately 6. 66 km. to the stockpile area in the refinery. In the refinery raw mat- erials area the bauxite is distributed into 200, 000 tonne stockpiles by means of a travel- ling boom stacker.

Geological. engineering is a field of engineering practice concerned with design and construction of excavations and structures in soil and rock masses. The role of geological engineering in mining practice is defined in this paper, and the scope of the various disciplines in engineering science and geoscience which support geo-engineering research is discussed. The current national research capacity in geo-engineering is considered, and current and future needs for geo-engineering research for mining practice are proposed. Education programmes to sustain the proposed level of research and its industrial implementation are Suggested.

The influence of strongly chemisorbed solutes such as oxygen and sulphur on the rates of reactions at the gas-liquid iron interface is briefly reviewed. Deductions from recent studies of the rates of decarbur- ization of carbon-saturated liquid iron indicate ideal adsorption behaviour for sulphur over a wide temperature and composition range. This is in fair accord with available infor- mation on surface tensions in the Fe-C-S system. Previously unpublished results for the kinetics of the 14C02-CO exchange reaction are in accord with ideal absorption of oxygen on liquid iron. The derived value for the ideal adsorption coefficient of oxygen at 1550¦C is in quantitative agreement with measurements of the depression of surface tension in the Fe-0 system. Consideration is given to the applicability of such results to the violently agitated systems of steelmaking.

Geological structures are irregular and intricate, so creating a 31) solid geology model is a complicated process. A software system can only partially automate this process, since geological knowledge and experience are required. Therefore, the interaction of a geologist is critical for such a system. This paper discusses some useful advanced functions for enhancing the visualisation and manipulation of 3D solid geology models: flexible attribute display, multiple views, auxiliary display objects, and geologically sensitive operations. It also describes some experiments to explore the effectiveness of these functions and presents sample output. Most existing 3D solid geology modelling systems are implemented in an ad hoc way, which greatly reduces their reusability and extensibility. This paper presents a generic framework for 3D solid geology modelling systems, which is based on object-oriented technology. The deficiencies of current systems may be improved by using this generic framework. A modelling process based on drillhole data is discusses as a case study.

Western Australia (WA) is currently the world’s largest iron ore producer, and mining of its huge reserves and resources of iron ore has become a critical part of the state’s economy and regional development. Iron ore exports from WA have reached 760 Mt/a, corresponding to shipping more than one Mt per turn-of-the-tide from the state’s ports. The iron ore sector dominates all commodities produced in WA, and in 2016 accounted for 77 per cent of the state’s royalty receipts, 56 per cent of mineral and petroleum exports (by value) and 50 per cent of mining industry employment. Expenditure on exploration for iron ore (including that for resource estimation and conversion to ore reserves) has declined markedly, from its record peak of $1100 M in 2012 to $280 M in 2016, placing it second after gold. The Lake Superior Region has been a producer of iron ore for over 150 years. Early mining operations concentrated on direct shipping ores, which are the result of post-depositional upgrading principally by deep weathering. As direct shipping ore reserves became depleted, the focus changed to the production of iron ore pellets from taconite. The post-depositional processes responsible for upgrading taconite are regional metamorphism, contact metamorphism and hydrothermal processes (Clout and Simonson, 2005). While these processes are important in iron ore genesis they can also contribute to liberation problems and in some instances reduced pellet quality (Han, 2004). Low-grade metamorphic mineral assemblages can negatively impact liberation and pellet quality. Low-grade iron formation may contain a suite of carbonate minerals including ankerite, dolomite, kutnohorite, siderite and magnesiosiderite. Variation in the distribution and composition of siderite and magnesiosiderite makes controlling the MgO content of pellets difficult. Carbonate minerals also require calcination in the pellet induration process, which requires additional heat to be added to the system, slowing down the induration process and reducing throughput. Prediction of carbonate mineralogy and carbonate mineral chemistry is an important goal of ore characterisation for pelletising properties. Contact metamorphism causes changes in mineralogy and grain size (Klein, 1973; Gunderson and Schwartz, 1962). Increasing the grain size of magnetite should improve its liberation characteristics. However, plant grinding targets may not allow the coarse-grained, more easily liberating magnetite ores to increase throughput and can actually result in decreased throughput due to recirculation. While magnetite and martite ores are well understood (Lukey, Johnson and Scott, 2007) late open-space filling microplaty haematite ores are not. These ores, while composed of similar minerals, have a unique genesis that results in fine grain size and complex textures that present liberation challenges and often make interpreting laboratory metallurgical test results more difficult.

Although the terms "pipe" and "tube" are normally considered synonymous, a distinction is often drawn, the former term being applied to the hot finished product and the latter to cold finished material. It is, considered that the title of this paper includes hot finished seamless, and continuous-weld pipe, cold drawn seamless tubing, and electrically welded tubing.The continuous-weld process will be reviewed first, passing to the various methods of seamless manufacturing, which, in addition to meeting the demand for hot finished seamless pipe, also supply the raw material for cold drawn tubing, the manufacture of which will then be described. An on-stream iron ore analyser has been developed in collaborationwith Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited for determining the iron content ofboth lump (- 30+ 6 mm particle size) and fines ( - 6 mm particle size)on conveyor belts. The analyser, which is called IRONSCAN, is basedon pair production, and is now commercially available from Mineral ControllnstrumentationLimited (MC!) in Adelaide. It can be mounted underexisting conveyor belts with minimal modifications to the conveyor structure,and the presence of steel cables in the belt does not interfere oncethe analyser has been correctly calibrated. The analyser has been extensivelytested on both lump and fines on the shiploading conveyor at Dampier,and typically the root mean square (Lm.s.) deviation between singleIRONSCAN measurements and conventional chemical analyses is betterthan 0.5070 Fe. It is currently being evaluated on - 150 mm ore from theprimary crusher at Mount Tom Price, and initial result are encouraging.The principal advantage of IRONSCAN is that it provides rapid informationon ore grades. But perhaps its greatest potential is at the primarycrusher where conventional sampling and analysis is very expensive toimplement.

Driven by an increasing need for water conservation, coal mine operators in the upper Isaac River catchment have placed significant emphasis upon the reuse of water. This initiative led to an overall increase in the salinity of mine waters. The ionic composition of this water differs from local stream water in that concentrations of sulfate are higher than average stream concentrations by ten per cent, while concentrations of bicarbonate and calcium are lower. When this water is discharged into ephemeral streams in semi-arid environments there is potential for this increased salinity and altered ionic composition to impact upon the ecosystem processes mediated by micro-organisms in river sediments.We have measured nitrification, denitrification and methanogenesis rates in a series of lab experiments using sediments from Isaac River catchment streams and found that salinity affects these processes in different ways and to different degrees. Process rates were shown to differ seasonally between samples taken from the same location and habitat type and also between different habitat types at the same time and location. Both aerobic and anaerobic process rates were higher in surface sediments and it is likely that this activity is associated with surface biofilms. Furthermore, we have shown that the ecosystem processes we have measured are limited by the availability of carbon in the sediments.The management implications of these findings for mine releases into ephemeral streams will be discussed.CITATION:Kerr, J L, Vink, S and Beyer-Robson, J, 2013. The Great Artesian Basin (GAB) contains one of the largest reserves of fresh water in the world. The volume in storage is enormous, being estimated at nearly 65 000 million megalitres (ML). Development of this resource, dominantly for the pastoral industry, began in the late-1800s and quickly accelerated. With exploitation of the resource, artesian pressures declined almost as rapidly. This loss of head is a result of the total discharge from the basin and much of this discharge is waste of water. The waste through uncontrolled bores and inefficient distribution systems still amounts to about 75 per cent of all discharge. However, the volume in storage has hardly been depleted. The major concern is the effect of withdrawal on artesian pressures. Due to the size of the Basin, the relatively flat gradients and low permeability, the movement of water through the aquifers is extremely slow and independent of recharge. Hence, the normal concepts of sustainable yield (ie discharge should equal recharge) cannot be applied to the Basin as a whole as travel times do not allow for the effect of recharge to be seen away from the outcrop areas within management timeframes. The large volume in storage, though, can provide an extensive buffer to the impacts of temporary water needs. This effect should be considered when assessing the acceptability of fixed life projects such as mines and the extracted volumes from their operations. Identifying a sustainable yield involves balancing the acceptability of the economic, environmental and social costs with the associated discharge and fall in head, to arrive at an acceptable balance.

A low-cost methodology that allows the determination of in situ stresses using oriented core specimens has been investigated. The technique can be used to determine the stresses during the early stages of a project, even in undeveloped areas of a mine. The research aim was to compare the experimental results estimated by the Acoustic Emission and Deformation Rate Analysis methods with those estimated by conventional Hollow Inclusion cell measurements. The studies have been focused on full stress tensor determination from a single oriented rock core. In all cases the rock core specimens recollected the in situ stresses reasonably well compared with the standard overcoring method.

An ongoing challenge in the coal industry is pyrite removal using the flotation method for fine particles. The use of a æseparation in frothÆ (SIF) technique to recover coarse particles of up to a few millimetres in size has presented a potential solution. However the commercial success of SIF is still limited due to the poor understanding of the separation mechanism. The particle floatability in SIF is determined by the constructive or destructive stresses resulting from the forces exerted by the particle on the bubble films. Hence, the surfactant properties and the mineral characteristics (eg hydrophobicity, shape, etc) are the key factors that control the interaction between the particle and froth. In the present work, the interaction forces between different particles (ie crushed glass, pyrite and coal) and a single air bubble are measured in a non-ionic surfactant solution (pentaethylene glycol mono n-dodecyl ether, C12E5) using an atomic force microscope (AFM). Experimental results show that the interaction is primarily dependent on the contact angle (ie the degree of hydrophobicity of the minerals). For crushed glass, the transition from repulsion to attraction was observed as the contact angle increased. As the concentration of C12E5 increased, the adhesion force was suppressed due to wrapping effect. For coal and pyrite with much higher hydrophobicity, long-range attraction was observed. The effect of shape factor was only visible at high surfactant coverage where sign of destabilisation became noticeable on the retracting force curve. These results provide a fundamental understanding of the direct interaction forces of a complex real system between an irregular particle of either crushed glass, pyrite or coal and a single air bubble. Theories developed for interpretation and modelling are thus far based upon the study of ideal systems of glass or polystyrene spheres and an air bubble and were incapable of explaining the interactions in complex real systems. The presented measurements were a first approach to the problem of real mineral-bubble interaction in flotation systems. Thus, the results can only best be interpreted semi-quantitatively.

In the fields of geotechnical engineering and slope management, various software packages are used to assess the behaviour or propensity for a slope to fail. Traditional kinematic analysis calculates the probability of failure of design sectors with respect to dominant structural set orientations. A novel methodology is provided here to view potential hazardous slope behaviour in 3D, allowing engineers to make informed decisions regarding various pit slope geometries. Apparent dips are calculated for every point in space with respect to every slope orientation of the entire pit surface/design, specifically in reference to bench and inter-ramp planar failure mechanisms. Implementing a proactive approach to slope design will not only lead to early mitigation of risk but can also add direct value by enhancing or improving upon slope angles for earlier access to ore. From a safety perspective, identification of unfavourably oriented slope geometries can be dealt with before failure occurs. This methodology relies on a strong understanding of the existing rock mass anisotropy, particularly behind the face, thereby removing some of the uncertainty surrounding pit design as well as presenting engineers with an additional means to manage risk.

Golden Pig mine is in the central part of the Southern Cross greenstone belt within the Archaean Yilgarn craton. The mine has produced approximately 2.5 Mt of ore at 5.7 g/t Au to yield approximately 450 000 oz. The majority of gold mineralisation is hosted within extensively deformed and quartz-veined BIFÆs. In addition to the BIF-hosted mineralisation, an increasingly important part of the resource lies in the Taurus Lode, which is a N-NNW-trending amphibolite facies shear zone. The Taurus Lode lies within a continuous shear-zone that has a moderate to steeply WSW dipping foliation, and a mineral lineation of biotite, amphibole and pyrrhotite plunging consistently 10¦ S. Drive faces, subperpendicular to the foliation and lineation, consistently show evidence for syn-mineralisation reverse shear. Exposures parallel to the mineral lineation and perpendicular to the foliation reveal both sinistral and dextral asymmetries. These characteristics suggest that the vorticity axis of the Taurus Shear Zone is parallel to the mineral lineation, and that the simple shear sense is reverse. This geometry can arise when there is a major component of flattening across the shear zone, which may be due to interference between two adjacent granite domes. The BIF-hosted lodes plunge consistently 15¦ NNW coincident with the intersection of the axial planar cleavage of the regional folds and the Taurus Shear Zone. However, where the penetrative shear characteristics control the orientation and geometry of the mineralisation, oreshoots plunge SSW, parallel to the stretching and mineral lineations within the shear. The SSW plunge of strike extensive and laterally confined high-grade, economic ore shoots within the Taurus shear is fundamental to defining the economic mineralisation within this lode. Identifying the zones of maximum continuity and establishing the optimal position for future development will maximise ore extraction.
