Over the past ten years, the mining industry has witnessed the introduction of a new and innovative mine filling technique known as paste fill, which consists of placing full stream tailings with small amounts of binder and water into underground stopes. Paste fill has benefits over traditional backfill methods, such as higher solids contents than hydraulic fill and easier transportation than rock fill. From a geotechnical perspective, the behaviour of very fine material in a fully saturated state can be complex, particularly when binder is added. Previously, there has been no rigorous solution to understanding the paste fill deposition process, resulting in uncertainty regarding critical aspects such as barricade load calculations. This uncertainty has the obvious consequences of potential barricade failures (including at least 12 over the past four years), and for many operations attempts to deal with this uncertainty has led to excessively conservative filling schedules, restricting production. This paper presents an application of Minefill-2D, the first rigorous model capable of representing the paste fill deposition process. The model couples the processes of material accretion, consolidation and cement hydration to calculate the distribution of stress around a stope (including the total stress applied to barricade structures) during filling. Minefill-2D is a finite element numerical program, which has been verified using laboratory element tests, centrifuge tests and in situ measurements (Helinski, 2008). The authors present a sensitivity analysis, carried out using the model, to demonstrate some of the critical and less critical aspects relating to paste backfill deposition. The results of this sensitivity analysis are used to devise a fill management strategy that can be utilised to minimise the risk of barricade failures and maximise fill rates where appropriate.

The design of entrainment control processes in copper SX plants has been studied by use of models based on achievable plant performance. A number of alternatives have been assessed for their suitability in minimising the transfer of deleterious species from PLS into the electrolyte. The position of the wash (scrub) stage in the circuit, either before or after the loaded organic tank, has been the subject of considerable debate. The modelling shows that at ænormalÆ entrainment levels, the performance of the circuits are very similar. However at high entrainment levels the selection of the wash after the loaded organic storage has significantly lower transfer of contaminants. When considering the inclusion of a loaded organic coalescer the results of the modelling again show that the best circuit has the loaded organic storage/coalescer before the wash stage. The overall control of EW contaminants includes both a wash stage and an EW bleed flow. The total water use for these two flows is shown to go through an absolute minimum. The minimum flow rate is not greatly dependant on the total entrainment from the SX settlers. This can be a useful operating strategy if the quantity of high quality water for make up is limited by the capacity of the water treatment plant (eg RO). However the minimum cost option is to maximise the flow of water to the wash stage and minimise the EW bleed stream. The main driver for this is the cost of the cobalt sulphate contained in the electrolyte. Some results from the latest circuit modifications at the Nifty and Girilambone Copper Projects are presented to confirm the benefits of using both coalescing systems and a wash stage. The EW bleed has been reduced to a level that is less than the loss internally in the SX stage to stage entrainment. There has been an occasional need to add chloride to the EW to maintain sufficient concentration to act as a growth modifier.

Overlying the coal deposits of the Sydney Basin are several lakes and other bodies of water. These include the Pacific Ocean, Lake Macquarie, the Tuggerah Lakes and the stored waters of the dams of the New South Wales Metropolitan Water Sewerage and Drainage Board. The coal beneath these bodies of water amounts to hundreds of millions of tons. Colliery workings have approached these areas of water and in some instances first 1"orkings of bord and pillar have taken place oi_eshh the water. he problem which now faces mine manage- and other interested authorities involves the determination of the maximum ;mount of coal which can be safely extracted from beneath the water. There are many factors to be considered including the depth of cover, seam thickness, geological details and strata movements.

The Telfer Gold Mine, owned and operated by Newcrest Mining and located in Western Australia, is currently being expanded. A new underground sublevel cave development is proposed along with an appreciable expansion of the open pit. The Telfer area is generally subject to low rainfall, however, during the wet season cyclonic events can result in sizable rain events, which have the potential to cause substantial inflow. In addition to this, during the first five years (nominal) of the mineÆs life, there is the potential for drainage paths between the pit and the underground mine via decommissioned underground workings which lie directly under the pit. After this initial five year period the pit floor will be mined out below the old workings and will therefore no longer connect to the underground, however cave breakthrough to the surface may start to occur thus providing another water path into the underground mine. To arrive at an optimum, safe solution for dewatering the mine that successfully addressed the above items, a rigorous risk analysis was included as an integral part of the design process. This involved the determination of the probability of events occurring and the consequences of these occurrences. This was compared against the cost of mitigation for the various events. This paper outlines the process by which a safe concept addressing all the issues relating to dewatering the proposed mine has been arrived at. This process included: Establishing the pit catchment areas. These were based on historical run-off data and took into account practical mitigation works. Establishing an Average Recurrence Interval (ARI) based on reference material and historical rainfall data. Utilising a standard approach based on Australian Rainfall and Run-off (ARR) to calculate pumping and storage requirements for the various catchments. Analysing the 20 years of recorded rainfall in the Telfer area to establish the duration, magnitude and sequence of events. This analysis assisted in determining the surface run-off coefficient. Establishing potential water storage areas and determining the risks associated with using particular storage options. Establishing the percolation rate through the cave zone. A degree of uncertainty regarding the percolation rate in the cave zone required that the consequences of using various percolation rates were considered to aid in establishing the rate which was adopted. Establishing preliminary concepts and determining the most economically viable concept. Conducting a risk assessment based on the principles outlined by Australian Rainfall and Run-off (ARR) to confirm that the appropriate Average Recurrence Interval (ARI) had been selected. A risk assessment was also conducted in accordance with client requirements. Establishing the optimum pump station sizes and storage capacities. Establishing the appropriate numbers of duty and standby equipment. By using the foregoing process, which included a number of stages of risk analyses, an optimum dewatering system concept was produced.

The most critical variable in the successful establishment of the Murrin Murrin Heap Leach plant was the effective agglomeration of the Ni laterite ore. This paper describes the test work undertaken to establish the key agglomeration parameters including state of the art testing and analysis procedures. These parameters were then utilised to establish the key design and operational concepts for the world’s first commercial scale Ni laterite heap leach. Following the technical and economic success of the operation, the actual operational data is compared back to the original test work data.

A strong commitment from the industry to this view has been instrumental in creating an efficient, profitable and productive industry based on modem production processes, sophisticated equipment and a multi skilled workforce. As the industry continues to develop, and the skills and knowledge needed by productive workers continues to expand, the training processes adopted by the industry will need to develop in parallel, not only making use of the latest advances in learning theories, instructional design and technology, but also using these knew ideas in more efficient ways.

Time window analysis that limits the explosive mass fired within a specified time window (commonly eight milliseconds) has been used for many years in blast design by explosives engineers. Despite several warnings in the past that this technique has limited practical or scientific basis and, in many cases, does not effectively control vibration, almost every textbook and blasting manual refers to time window charge mass limits as a primary vibration control technique. It has become entrenched in some blast vibration management plans, despite being inappropriate for the particular situation. With the flexible initiation timing available with electronic detonation almost a practical reality, and the 8 ms constraints in-built into the signal tube initiation system thereby lifted, it is timely to review the significance of the 8 ms time window in controlling blast vibration. This paper re-visits the original research that led to the development of the 8 ms criteria and the non-supportive conclusion of the original researcher. Because airblast was not measured, the 8 ms time window was never intended to be applicable for airblast control. Examples of blast designs are given in this paper that comply with the 8 ms time window limit that result in substantially increased air and ground vibration, together with examples of blast design that does not satisfy time window considerations, which results in reduced air and ground vibration. Techniques that identify wavefront reinforcement, due to the combined effect of drilling pattern and delay sequence, can assist explosives engineers to avoid high blast vibration situations that result from the inappropriate application of time window techniques and other adverse delay combinations.

A cut-off grade is used to distinguish an economically viable block of ore from non-economical ones in mining operations. In order to obtain a high Net Present Value (NPV), a strategic and precise determination of cut-off grades (mill feed/marginal, marginal/waste) is required. In recent years, the significant depletion of feed grades and increasing mining operating costs have affected the viability of new and existing mining operations. Hence, the introduction of a pre-concentration system to process ore before sending it the main processing plant has gained increasing attention for its potential improvements in resource exploitation processes, mineral processing, energy consumption and environmental impacts. The primary potential advantage of implementing a pre-concentration system is the improvement of resource utilisation and increased reserves as a result of a reduction in cut-off grade. The objective of this paper is to present a new cut-off grade method, which can be used in the presence of a pre-concentration system for underground metalliferous mining operations. The results of this study illustrate the potential economic benefits of using a pre-concertation system prior to a mineral processing operation as a result of the reduced cut-off grade and increased NPV.

A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the three types of sample grinders routinely used in the mining industry for the sample preparation of gold ores with particular emphasis placed on testing their capacity to produce a representative assay sample of coarse gold ores. The grinders used in this study are the Labtechnics LM5, the Mixermill 4010 ringmill and the Keegor vertical spindle pulveriser, commonly called a Keegormill. The study was based on the preparation of samples from two sources of known coarse gold ore, the Union Reefs Gold Mine and the Brocks Creek Gold Mine in the Pine Creek region of the Northern Territory of Australia, and a fine gold ore which was from the Macraes Gold Mine in New Zealand. The Union Reefs Mine contains visible coarse gold with 30 per cent to 40 per cent of the gold in the plus 75 μm fraction of milled ore. Discreet particles up to 5 mm have been recorded, Hellsten (1994). Union Reefs Gold Mine recovers 40 per cent of its bullion production through a gravity circuit, Riches (1997). Brocks Creek ore contains visible coarse gold with gravity bullion production fluctuating between 50 per cent and 65 per cent, depending on the mill feed. Average gravity bullion production from the Brocks Creek Mine is 55 per cent, Wilke (1997). The average gold grain size of Macraes Mine ore is 20 μm with 40 per cent of the gold in sub 10 μm particles. No gravity bullion is produced from the Macraes Mine, O'Keefe (1997). The testwork demonstrated conclusively that it is possible to prepare a representative sample for assay, of a coarse gold ore, when a Keegormill is used to pulverise the sample to a nominal 100 μm particle size (90 per cent passing a 100 μm screen by wet sieving). Both the Mixermill and the Labtechnics LM5 failed to prepare a representative sample, even when ground to a nominal 75 μm particle size.

Level measurement of underground orepasses is important. Orepasses are not only utilised to funnel ore to the shaft skip loading station but also as silos for storing of ore in order to smooth out ore flow in a shaft system. Safety and operational efficiency are also improved as proper orepass level measurement could prevent overfilling of tipping areas. A study was therefore commenced to determine alternative technologies available as well as identifying practical installations across the Anglo American plc Group. From an instrumentation perspective an orepass system is an extremely difficult environment to take measurements in. Factors like dust, vapour, interference, bridging, wear and physical installation have to be taken into account. The study discusses time-of-flight (ultrasonics, radar and laser) measurement techniques followed by other possible solutions. These solutions included strain gauge measurement, the æjumping monkeyÆ technique, radiotomography, fibre optics and very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). Finally, various South African suppliers have been approached in order to determine instrumentation that is available for orepass level measurement in the marketplace. These recommendations were verified, where possible, by visiting the claimed installations.

High temperature roasting studies on chrome-spinel contaminated ilmenite concentrates showed that sulfur, introduced through a sulfidising roast treatment, selectively reacted with the chromium in the spinels. The roast treatments were carried out in a laboratory scale rotating drum kiln using a standard Becher-style heating profile (10 h, 1075ºC), char as the reductant, and variable amounts of added elemental sulfur (0 - 3 wt per cent).After roasting, bronze-coloured grains were visible representing chrome-spinels that had undergone selective sulfidisation. SEM imaging of the products showed that sulfur was preferentially concentrated in ~5 - 15 µm thick rims fully enclosing the chrome-spinel grains. The sulfur-rich rims became a sink for manganese (Mn) from the ilmenite resulting in the rims being rich in Cr-Mn-Fe-sulfides. Quantitative electron probe microanalysis of phases present within the rims identified two sulfide phases. The first sulfur-phase (S-phase) was low in Mn (1 - 3 wt per cent) and high in Fe, Cr and S, while the second S-phase was considerably higher in Mn (30 - 35 wt per cent Mn) and lower in Fe and Cr. The dramatic change in the composition of the chrome spinels after sulfidisation is likely to significantly alter their physical properties (eg hydrophobicity, conductivity, etc). This should make their physical separation from the ilmenite potentially easier than roasting/magnetic separation methods.

Digital photogrammetry is revolutionising the task of geotechnical mapping of jointed rock masses and has greatly increased in popularity and sophistication in recent years. Modern commercially available digital photogrammetry software systems can provide geotechnical practitioners with a user friendly tool for rapid data acquisition. The data can be acquired remotely from large exposure areas, some of which may be otherwise out of reach due to restrictions on time, access or safety.Photogrammetry is a complimentary technology to discrete fracture network (DFN) modelling because it can provide the large, statistically significant, spatially located geotechnical data sets required to produce the most robust results. It also provides the flexibility to selectively map structures at a range of scales, depending on the focus of the DFN modelling.Integration of the interpreted rock structure data derived from photogrammetry with modern DFN modelling methods really advances the rock engineering process. The ability to generate 3D fracture models driven by the statistical structural data and conditioned to the features observed by the photogrammetry yields a synthetic rock mass on which improved design methods can be applied. The generation of multiple equi-probable conditioned DFN models allows the use of probabilistic methods for assessing kinematic stability, rock block size distribution as well as a range of other applications.CITATION:Rogers, S F and Booth, P W, 2014. The purpose of this paper is to list by tabulation and flow sheet, the operating equipment and installations in use at Rosebery, and to refer to particular items which may be of interest for purposes of comparison, or because they possess some unusual feature. The general perspective has been taken from the viewpoint of operating and maintenance experience.The sequence begins with ore breaking and transport and proceeds through milling operations. The paper is in two sections, first, mechanical equipment, second, electrical equipment. A brief outline of a scheme for using gravel wash for stope filling, which is in course of installation, has also been given.

The development plan (long-term plan) of El Teniente Mine, Codelco-Chile, includes 100 per cent primary ore, located at increasing depths, which may involve several difficulties related to the application of the current panel caving method, such as a high seismicity level, a coarse fragmentation and ore pass damage. Therefore, it is a strategic priority for the El Teniente mine, to design and to test alternative mining methods, at similar or lower costs to ensure an efficient and safe ore extraction. In this context, the Macrotrench method is developed, as a competitive alternative to the current method. The document describes the panel caving method, the experience achieved in the primary ore exploitation from the geomechanical point of view. It also describes the æmacrotrenchÆ method as an alternative to the current exploitation method. Finally, the comparative advantages of macrotrench in relation to panel caving are presented. The results obtained during the engineering stage include the following aspects:the mining design, the material handling, a geomechanical evaluation of the method, and a comparative analysis.

This paper describes the latest open pit optimisation techniques,which now go beyond merely finding an optimal outline. The paper starts by briefly reviewing pit design techniques before optimsation. It then goes on to describe the pit optimisation procedure and the extensions to it which allow the automatic generation of nested families of pits. Next, the properties of families of nested pits are examined and the paper explains how they can be used to simulate certain mining sequences and schedules. Finally, we describe an actual study which was done using this kind of Software.

Machine learning is creating value in all facets of the mining industry, from exploration to production. The authors provide an accessible, high-level introduction to artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL); the latter being widely recognised as one of the most powerful forms of ML. In particular, the authors will introduce deep learning models known as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), how they are applied, and the economic considerations necessary for determining when DL may be the right solution to de-risking complex block modelling problems. The authors present preliminary results from the mineral resource modelling study of the Jundee orogenic gold deposit, Yandal belt/gold province, Western Australia. The primary goal was to identify the direction and location of the narrow gold veins more accurately and demonstrate how non-linearly correlated elements are used as direct inputs to the resource model to assist with the target element’s grade prediction. This demonstrates that: (1) existing techniques for finding correlations between assayed elements do not adequately reflect the complex geology of the asset, (2) nonlinear correlations that are difficult to model as simple mathematical functions are representative of geological patterns in a deposit, and (3) non-linearly correlated assayed data, fed as inputs, increase the performance of the resource model as reconciled through blind tests. To conclude, the authors hypothesise that the patterns represented by the DL block models may be revealing the results of overprinting geological processes that generated mineral deposits. For example, the primary hydrothermal processes that deposited metals created depositional patterns that become particularly complex as a result of being overprinted, in part or in whole, by secondary physicochemical processes. This may explain why non-linear geochemical relationships have the capacity to generate more accurate block models of mineral deposits.

The Dumont deposit is a large (1179 Mt reserve), low-grade (0.27 per cent nickel) nickel sulfide project located in the Abitibi region 25 km west of Amos, Quebec. Royal Nickel Corporation (RNC) acquired the project in 2007 and has since taken the deposit through to feasibility. The disseminated nickel sulfide and alloy mineralisation is hosted within the serpentinised dunite subzone of the Dumont Sill; a differentiated, pervasively serpentinised, ultramafic sill of komatiitic affinity. Pentlandite ((Ni,Fe)9S8), heazlewoodite (Ni3S2) and awaruite (Ni2.5Fe) are the dominant nickel-bearing metallic phases and can be recovered by conventional methods (flotation, magnetic separation). Non-recoverable nickel is also present within serpentine and olivine of the silicate matrix.A detailed mineralogical program including 1420 QEMSCAN« samples and 4400 electron microprobe points was undertaken to increase the understanding of the nickel deportment in the various recoverable and non-recoverable phases in a spatial context across the deposit. A total of 105 metallurgical tests have been performed under a standard procedure which have linked the mineralogy to metallurgical performance. This has allowed the creation and modelling of geometallurgical domains on a block-by-block basis to understand the recovery variation and metallurgical performance throughout the deposit. Understanding the spatial variability of Ni deportment in recoverable and non-recoverable phases through mineralogy is the key to understanding metallurgical performance, thus unlocking the value of the Dumont deposit and other large tonnage low-grade ultramafic nickel deposits.CITATION:Sciortino, M, Muinonen, J, Korczak, J and St-Jean, A, 2013. Randgold Resources’ Loulo-Gounkoto Complex is one of the largest gold mining operations in Mali, West Africa. The mine, which is situated on the western border with Senegal, treats more than 4 Mt/a of ore through a conventional three-stage crushing and ball milling circuit followed by a carbon-in-leach plant. Ore supply is achieved by a combination of open pit and underground mining, with the majority of the ore supply sourced from the Gara and Yalea underground mines situated approximately 2 km and 6 km respectively from the gold plant.In 2011, Randgold Resources commissioned Golder Associates to perform an evaluation study for providing structural backfill to both the Gara and Yalea underground mines using the current gold plant tailings. The test work performed as part of the evaluation study concluded the need for a tailings cycloning and dewatering facility capable of producing slurry at a solids concentration of 65 per cent with a particle size distribution that had minimum 25 per cent passing 20 µm and less than 5 per cent of -5 µm material. Tailings desliming was required to ensure a consistent feed quality to the paste preparation plants and to ensure that the system would be capable of handling variation in the feed composition from the gold plant.WorleyParsons, previously TWP Projects, was contracted by Randgold Resources to complete the engineering design for the slurry preparation plant, whilst Golder Associates was retained to complete the engineering design of the two paste preparation plants.This paper discusses the test work, design considerations and engineering design of the slurry preparation plant, termed the ‘intermediate plant’, as well as all ancillary facilities required for the delivery of the deslimed slurry to the paste preparation plants located at the two underground mines.CITATION:Swanepoel, M, du Toit, G and Gillot, P L, 2014. Among the problems of the flotation of sulphides by the thiol collectors is the dependence and varieties of the flotation starting with the time and oxygen contents in the slurry. For sulphides, the flotation stage follows after the electrocatalytic oxidation of the collector with oxygen on the surface of the conductor minerals. The necessity of the oxygen for sulphide flotation (Plaksin and Bessonov, 1957) is in accordance with a corrosion model of a collector surface sorption (Salamy and Nixon, 1954). As Golikov and Nagimyak (1961) showed, the sulphides possess catalytic activity which provides the autoxidation of the xanthates in the sluny to the dixanthogen. This stage can be rather protracted, which limits the speed of the total process. Disulphides constitute important collectors for the sulphide flotation and the optimal degree of the xanthate oxidation is about 20 per cent for different ores (Abramov, 1978) or, following Chanturiya and Nazarova (1977) the surface compositions for various sulphide ores are different and an optimal oxidation degree is variable from five to 25 per cent according to the ore nature. The optimisation of the surface composition is possible by application of the dixanthogens, or by a partial chemical, electrochemical, or catalytic oxidation of xanthates (Desains, 1847; Schall, 1896; Vigdergauz, 1989). According to Rand (1977) and Vigdergauz (1991) sulphides possess different catalytic activities for oxygen electroreduction. In neutral solutions, for example, the following decrease in the order: FeS2 (Fe,Ni)9S8 CuFeS2 FeS; Cu5FeS4 Cu2S; PbS (Vigdergauz, 1991). For the cases of low catalytic activities of the sulphides, the preflotation oxidation of xanthate could be useful to optimise the process kinetics.

Banks' focus in using cash flow methods can differ markedly from that of equity investors. This paper attempts to explain and describe bankers' approach by: ò outlining the fundamental difference between banks' and investors' risk / return profiles. ò describing lenders' consequent use of cash flow methods in mineral valuation. areas. explaining lenders' specific treatment of key risk Fundamental to understanding banks' appraisal of mineral projects is the appreciation that lenders have a basically different risk profile and outlook from those familiar to equity investors. Lenders do not normally participate in any project upside. The economics of lending dictate that banks can only accommodate a low probability of loan default and consequently banks' principal focus in mineral ""valuation"" is ensuring an acceptably comfortable probability of debt repayment. A simple conceptual explanation of lenders' risk / return position is outlined.
