Both safety and productivity in underground gassy coal mines can be improved substantially if an appropriate gas management system is introduced. A strong direct relationship exists between the gas emission rate, roof and floor strata relaxation zones characteristic, mining activities and gas drainage practices. Detailed knowledge of geological factors, gas and coal-rock properties, as well as mining systems are necessary for the methodology used in predicting overall underground gassiness, and planning gas capture and ventilation systems. Early gas emission calculations for various mining activities, particularly for the longwall mining system are essential. A reasonably accurate prediction of gas make as well as the design of ventilation, gas recovery (drainage holes) techniques can be made using 'Floorgas' and 'Roofgas' computer simulations, provided sufficient geological, mining, and gas data are made available.

SIROFRAG is a computer-based imaging system that quantifies the post-blast rock fragment size distribution in a muckpile in a mine environment. Improvements in blast performance and blast modelling are being hampered by a lack of a quick and objective method to evaluate the major result of the blast: the fragment size distribution. This is usually done by hand digitising muckpile photographs: a labour intensive and tedious process. SIROFRAG is being developed to quickly, cheaply and objectively provide this information. SIROFRAG is based on active stereo image analysis. It uses a light stripe to illuminate a muckpile and a pair of video cameras to determine the 3D nature of the scanned objects. The imaging system is based on a novel prototype scanning projector that allows images to he captured in full daylight. The Microsoft Windows based software controls the projector and interprets the captured images to provide a size distribution of exposed rock fragments.

This study relates to the spongillite deposits from the region of Jopo Pinheiro, in the north-west of the State of Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brazil. The deposits occur in shallow ponds (with a maximum depth of 3.5 m) on a karstic planation surface developed on rocks of the Spo Francisco Neoproterozoic Supergroup. Cenozoic detritic covers are associated with this surface. The field study of spongillite deposits from the Preguita and Avipo deposits revealed sedimentological and pedological similarities between the different deposits. They have a lenticular shape and contain different layers of sedimentary spicules intercalated with layers of quartz sand and clay minerals. Representative samples from the different layers investigated by X-ray diffraction, differential and gravimetric thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy showed a range from three to 80 per cent of amorphous silica (opal) corresponding mostly to the sponge spicules in the sediments. Optical microscopic investigation determined that the spicules predominantly belong to the sponge Metania spinata. This species is represented by smooth megascleres (alpha type), prickly megascleres (beta type) measuring 240 to 450 mm in length, as well as the spiny microscleres; whereby the smooth megascleres are larger and thinner. The morphological variation of the spicules as well as the presence of more fragmented spicules towards the base of the deposits, portray a variation in texture and in the state of their preservation along the profile, suggesting environmental variations at the time of their formation and deposition.

Copper and Gold mineralisation at the Ernest Henry deposit is bound by two controlling shears along the hanging wall and footwall margins. The shear zone geometries have been influenced by a large diorite intrusion, dated at ca. 1660 Ma, which lies to the north-east and south-west of the main orebody. The shear zones, which partitioned strain prior to the main mineralising event ca. 1514–1504 Ma, and in conjunction with adjacent regional structures, have been a critical factor in the deposit location and geometry. Conventional exploration techniques have been utilised proximal to the current deposit since the initial discovery in order to expand upon known resources, with limited success. However, new geomechanical modelling techniques have now been employed to target structurally controlled mineralised zones in three dimensions. The main aim of the geomechanical modelling was to simulate the effects of regional deformation events to highlight areas of anomalous strain, which indicate areas with a higher likelihood of fluid focusing and mineralisation potential. This project was focused on testing the latter stages of a D3 event (NE-SW compression) to examine preconditioning of the system, and a D4 event (SE-NW compression) which have ultimately been responsible for the current location of the mineralisation.CITATION:McLellan, J G and Miller, B, 2017. The oolitic iron ore reserves in Lisakovsky, North Kazakhstan represent quite a challenging deposit both from a technological and from a resource point of view. The difficulties in processing such types of ore are connected with the extremely fine dissemination of phosphorus and gangue minerals inside the oolitic formations. The goethite crystals are cemented in their structure by aluminosilicates with quartz and other gangue minerals and dissemination is so fine that they are not separable by physical methods. The laboratory tests performed for dephosphorisation show that the combination of alkaline roasting followed by low intensity magnetic separation and acid leaching enables the obtaining of high grade iron concentrate. The magnetic separation performed ahead of leaching is effi cient as a means of buffering the high pH by washing out the soluble salts and the excess of base and after leaching facilitates the removal of secondary liberated gangue minerals in the non-magnetic fraction. As a consequence, phosphorous content is dropped to a more acceptable level for the ferrous metallurgy and iron grade and recovery reach 61.6 and 80.8 per cent respectively.

The extinction of zinc from steelmaking dusts has been studied with a laboratory scale reduction-vapour deposition (RVD) process in the absolute pressure and temperature ranges of 13 - 1300 Pa and 1333 - 1513 K respectively. This process consists of pre-reduction of iron oxide by carbonaceous agent, carbothermic reduction of zinc oxide under reduced pressure to produce zinc deposits and subsequent re-evaporation of the deposits to liquedify the zinc. In the RVD, the gas mixture of Zn and CO quenched from the hot zone is separated into Zn deposit and CO which is transferred to the pumping system. The Zn are a layer of fine metallic zinc powders accumulated on the cold wall and removed to the vacuum distillation chamber. The experimental works have been carried out according to the following items: carbothennic reduction of zinc oxide under vacuum, carbothermic reduction o zinc ferrite under vacuum, and 3. distillation of the Zn deposits. It has been concluded from these experimental results that the recovery of metallic zinc from the EAF dusts is successful by this process, and a new concept for a practical zinc winning process has been proposed.

"Quebrada Blanca is a porphyry copper deposit located in the Eocene-Oligocene belt of Chilean Andes. Operation started in 1994 and original reserves for supergene mineralisation gave a life-of-mine (LOM) of 20 years; however, further exploration extended the LOM until 2020.In order to optimise the remaining five years of supergene resource, geometallurgical variables were added to the geological model including copper recovery and acid consumption. LOM plan encompasses finishing the phase number eight and the future development of phases 11 and 13.LOM lithologies include diorites, quartz monzonites, porphyries, igneous and tourmaline breccias. Main alterations are: potassic, phyllic and argillic. Litho-alterations or geometallurgical units were formed by combining five types of rocks with three types of alteration. According to statistical information, the deposit can be represented with 12 litho-alteration units, which cover 98 per cent of the LOM volume.For copper recovery information, there were 40 mini-columns tests made in order to obtain kinetics curves and copper recovery values after comparing the difference between head and tails grades. Acid consumption was obtained using an automatic neutraliser device-based test.Historical data said that copper recovery in pads after 450 days of irrigation is around 75 per cent of recoverable copper while acid consumption is around 5.5 kg/t.According to this study, lower recoveries are related with potassic-altered diorites and argillic-altered quartz monzonites with values around 60 per cent. On the other hand, best recoveries could be found in potassic-altered quartz monzonites and argillic-altered diorites with values closer to 80 per cent.It was also revealed that the most reactive rock is the potassic-altered diorite with 12 kg/t of acid consumption. This rock covers approximately 40 per cent from phases 11 and 13.The final geomet model was calculated using a program that relates each geometallurgical unit with a specific copper recovery and acid consumption value. Decarbonising explosives manufacturing and catalysing low-carbon mining supply is a significant global challenge. Low-carbon manufacturing precincts – clusters of geographically close businesses across multiple industries that share a goal of adopting firmed renewable energy and decarbonising process emissions – offer one potential solution. In an Australian first, Orica commissioned tertiary catalyst abatement technology in 2023 to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at its Kooragang Island (KI) facility in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. The EnviNOx® technology (ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions AG, Dortmund, Germany) used reduces nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas arising as a by-product of nitric acid manufacture. As a result, mining customers in NSW are now benefitting from ammonium nitrate (AN) products that are almost 50 per cent less emissions-intensive than those Orica previously offered. The $37 million project is a private-public partnership that has involved partners across Federal and State government, global engineering and technology vendors, local community groups and local carbon advisors to overcome financial barriers.

  This paper describes the design and construction of the upper section of the Pike River Mine Access Road. The road extends 11 km from Logburn Road alongside Big River on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand up Pike Stream to the new mine portal on White Knight Stream (Figure 1). This new road starts on alluvial terraces, then partially follows an old logging road before entering virgin bush and traversing the true left bank of a steep sided gorge on Pike Stream some 50 - 100 m above the stream before dropping down to the mine entrance. Its development has been an extended process from route selection, consenting through to design and construction.   The paper focuses on the 1 km section of road between the Amenities Area (Figure 1) and the portal. This section of road is a steep section through the gorge, principally on Conservation estate, and has presented the most challenges and required the greatest effort to obtain the regulatory approvals, prepare the design and to construct. This paper outlines the history of the challenges faced and how the road was successfully developed.

Re-opening of the old Proprietary mine has provided new exposures of the system of uralite dolerite dykes observed in 19110 by the Geological Sub-Committee of the Scientific Society of Broken Hill. The newly exposed dykes have been invaded and replaced by the massive ore, with development of manganese garnet and biotite adjacent to the sulphides. A similarly altered dyke in massive ore has been encountered in the North Broken Hill mine.The textures of the unaltered portions of these dykes indicate that they have not been affected by the intense regional metamorphism that has recrystallized the other rocks of the area. Moreover, in mineral composition and textures, in chemical composition, and in cross-cutting relations, they are so similar to the uralite dolerites of the district which post-date the folding and metamorphism of the Broken Hill area, that they must be regarded as typical members of this suite of post-metamorphic dykes.The invasion and replacement of the dykes by the massive sulphide ore, and their metasomatic alteration adjacent to the invading sulphides, establishes that the lode was formed after the dykes were intruded, so that the high temperature features of the ore cannot be attributed to metamorphism and recrystallization, but are primary features of high temperature hydrothermal deposition.INTRODUCTIONTwo cross dykes are recorded on the plan of the 300-ft. level of the Broken Hill lode accompanying the report on the geology of the Broken Hill lode published by the Geological Sub-Committee of the former Scientific Society of Broken Hill (1910). AT Broken Hill, N.S.W., where flotation is tbe final stage in concentration, the gangue minerals are discharged as an aqueous pulp, and water recovery from the pulp being essential, provision must be made for the clisposal of the solids and for the return of the clear water to the cemcentrating mill circuit. On the southern flank of Lihir Island, a group of three volcanic cones were discovered at water depths from 1000-1500 m. The volcanoes are located in a narrow zone of recent seismic activity and elevated heat flow (up to 100 mW/m2). The recovered rocks consist of fresh alkali-olivine basalts, clinopyroxene-rich basalts, and porphyritic phlogopite basalts. One of the volcanoes has a recently erupted ejecta blanket (recovery of warm ash!), containing a suite of abundant mafic to ultramafic xenoliths. These xenoliths appear to represent a unique cross-section of subduction- modified mantle material sampled by volatile-rich primary fore-arc magma during its ascent to the seafloor. The most spectacular finding was the discovery of an active hydrothermal system with associated vent fauna and mineralization at Edison Seamount, and the recovery of unusually gold-rich (up to 43 ppm Au) hydrothermal precipitates in 1050 m water depth at the top of Conical Seamount, only 25 km south of the world-class epithermal Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir. The discovery of submarine hydrothermal vents associated with highly alkaline, quartz-undersaturated fore-arc volcanics represents a significant departure from similar hydrothermal systems on the mid-ocean ridges and in back-arc basins. The high gold grades in hydrothermal precipitates at Conical Seamount may indicate the first documented example of a shallow-marine epithermal system analogous to those known on land, and has important implications for the gold potential of submarine arc environments.

Although efforts towards producing a `total quality rockfill product' have allowed cemented rockfill costs to be reduced considerably, there is still tremendous potential for further cost reductions. Cemented rockfill costs range from approximately $7 to $12 (US) per tonne of fill placed. Approximately 50 per cent of the rockfill costs are associated with cement costs. A large portion of the remaining 50 per cent is associated with labour and materials handling costs. Several Canadian underground mines utilise haulage trucks and/or conventional belt conveyors to distribute the rockfill. However, due to the restrictive nature of the underground environment, these current materials handling systems have limitations (ie spillage from trucks, dust from conveyors). The Sicon conveyor system (developed in Sweden) has considerable potential for replacing these current methods. The Sicon conveyor utilises a revolutionary approach - the conveyor belt is folded over upon itself (forming a tear drop shape) so that the transported material is completely encased within the belt. The Sicon conveyor's ability to negotiate very tight comers (without transfer points) makes the conveyor very appealing for underground mining applications. An analysis comparing the pros and cons associated with the Sicon conveyor system versus conventional materials handling systems will be presented in this paper.

The Northwest Territories (NWT) of Canada has emerged as a major new province for diamond mineralisation in less than three years. This is primarily the product of a diligent search in the form of a scientifically based exploration effort. However other factors, including positive aspects of the business and the legal environment have also been identified as assisting the exploration process. In my view these have increased the likelihood of diamond mining becoming a major new industry for Canada. The supportive role of various government agencies has been important. In addition, the character of many of the joint venture deals that have been done has provided an attractive setting for the capital intensive evaluation and development work that is now required to bring the diamond discoveries into production. Perhaps of equal importance is that with the recognition that is being given to the success of the NWT diamond ventures, Canadian explorers are continuing to attract new risk capital for further exploration. This paper attempts to model and quantify the probability of exploration success translating into successful mine development.

The paper describes a new process for filtration which combines the continuous operation of conventional vacuum filters with the low final moisture contents hitherto only achievable with plate and frame presses. The increasingly high portion of fine particles causes several problems in the filtration of copper concentrates. One drawback is that remarkable quantities of liquid are attached to the very fine particles because of their specific surface area. Furthermore, fine particles also reduce the size of the capillaries in the filter cake, thus increasing the critical pressure which any filtration system has to exceed to achieve the desired final cake moisture. The maximum filtration pressure of conventional vacuum filters is limited by nature itself and by practical aspects to approximately 0.75 bar. The hyperbaric filter combines the continuous operating principle with an increase in filtration pressure of up to 6 bar simply by placing the entire disc or drum filter inside a pressure vessel. The major machine components and process features are explained in the details of the paper. After extensive research and field testing, 23 ANDRITZ hyperbaric filters, with a total filtration area of 1968 m2 have now been sold. Seventeen of these units (1440 m2) are in commercial use and more units are, on order. Performance data on copper concentrates from plants in Australia, South America, Poland, Africa and North America are outlined in detail. Global methods used to explore for minerals have progressed relatively slowly since the development of the first diamond core drill in 1863. Since then, key developments such as wireline geophysics (1920s), the tricone drill bit (1930s) and aeromagnetic surveys (1940s) all occurred in response to global events. In this project, BHP’s WAIO Geoscience operations team hypothesise that a global movement towards a greener future as well as an increasing intolerance for safety events will drive another step change in exploration methods. We have leveraged our relationships with exploration contractor partners and industry leaders to develop a realistic vision for 2033 and beyond, where drill rigs, earthworks and geophysical units are operated and maintained remotely; emissions of dust and waste are eliminated; hazardous energy sources are controlled; procurement is based on sustainability rather than cost and carbon emissions are tracked with the same rigour as production metrics. We have combined these visions into a series of graphical illustrations with the aim of inspiring ourselves, our vendors and our peers to collaborate further on producing a step change in our industry.

In a company's quest for financing the development of a new mine, it will make calls on stockbroking houses and banks. The choice of the best-fit broker or banker is of great importance, and in the case of the miner, this is a house that has an intimate understanding of the mining industry, particularly one that has a solid staff complement of personnel with operating mine experience at a senior level. The most important document that the company will present to support its financing request will be the Feasibility Study. It cannot be too strongly emphasised that this document must be absolutely comprehensive and cover items including: (a) Geological review; (b) Resources and reserves; (c) Mineability; (d) Mining schedule; (e) Metallurgy; (f) Process plant description; (g) Infrastructure and services; (h) Management and operations; (i) Environmental and social impact; (j) Capital costs; (k) Operating costs; and (1) Financial analysis. The elements listed above represent major topics and require a great deal of expansion in the body of the document. Rothschild Australia Limited assists its client companies by supplying a detailed framework so that they will be in a position give the bank the information it needs to complete its technical `due diligence' study within a mutually agreed time. Process engineering principles are used to analyse the features of leaching processes for large masses of low grade, unprocessed ore. Different performance characteristics are related to the numerous variants of these processes. The variant for which reagent enters a heap only via the input solution is further subdivided into three modes of operation. The three modes may occur in testwork and full-scale operations; the effects of process variables on the rate of the process are completely different in each mode. The mode can be identified by the time at which reagent first appears in the pregnant solution. It is related to the ratio of the height of the heap and the thickness of a band of ore in which the reactions are localised. Synthesis of the phenomena occurring within a heap via a computer program has produced a quantitative relation for the reaction band thickness. The program has been validated for several different systems. The overall achievement is that the mode of operation and the rate of the process can be forecast before column testwork is commenced. Some applications of the outcomes to testwork, process design and operational tactics are described.

"This paper was primarily put together in order to demonstrate what are believed to be acceptablestandards, in relation to ventilation surveys and the subsequent model assembly process. Thiswas brought about by the fact that in many parts of the world it is regarded as acceptable to carryout ventilation surveys and then build and supply the client with a æstick fi gureÆ type ventilationmodel. Such stick models have arguably litt le use and a very short life span in the real world and isalmost impossible for site staff to maintain. Thankfully most underground coal mines in Australia strive to maintain a true replica model of their ventilation circuits and to keep them in a relatively good state. Given that these mines own and maintain the models, it is often seen as necessary to update or rebuild them. The level of survey detail required to do so is totally dependent on the end use of the data and the criticality of the accuracy of the data set, to the ongoing safety and viability of the business. Mine technical personnel should think clearly about the use and importance of the ventilation survey and subsequent report outputs required that will help them bett er understand their mines and bett er prepare them to manage their ventilation circuits, on an ongoing basis. This paper provides some guidance for Australian ventilation engineers so they may plan and execute this work æin houseÆ, should they rightly choose to do so. To this end, methods of data collection and circuit analysis required for surveys of a high order of accuracy are detailed. Also, some of the issues which are important when formulating a strategy to carry out the appropriate ventilation survey for the required purpose are summarised. As well, the major details that should be furnished within any survey and some survey/report outputs and/or omissions, which are clearly not acceptable, are highlighted."

The continued exploration of the major brown coal deposits of the Latrobe Valley has resulted not only in the discovery of huge additional reserves, but also in new concepts of the stratigraphy and structure of the coal seams in that area. The author sets out his interpretation of the new information which has become available over the last six years.A section of the paper is devoted to the quality of the coal. As the chemical composition of these brown coals has been discussed in some detail by previous authors, only the major constituents and the heat value of the coal are dealt with in this paper. Some of the variations in quality are related to the geological structure.The occurrence of underground water and its relation to open cuts is dealt with briefly.INTRODUCTIONThe Latrobe Valley Tertiary Basin is almost entirely covered by a layer of Post Tertiary sediments which mask the underlying rocks and their structures. As a result, the geological understanding of this area has had to await the comprehensive drilling campaign in search of brown coal, initiated by the Victorian Mines Department in 1917, and subsequently carried on by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. The first detailed geology was published by Herman (1922), and this was followed some 25 years later by papers by Edwards, and later Thomas and Baragwanath, to which reference will be made later in this paper. Herman included a section on the geology of the Latrobe Valley in his book Brown Coal, which was published in 1952.Since that time a considerable amount of new information has become available from the continued drilling carried out by the Commission. In addition, geophysical work carried out by the Commonwealth Bureau of Mineral Resources has assisted in the defining of geological structures in the area.
