MIM Holdings Limited has acquired a reputation for the successful application of R&D to develop break-through technologies for the mining industry. The Isa Process tank-house technology has been licensed to copper refineries throughout the world, and almost 40 per cent of the worldÆs copper is refined using this technology. Isasmelt copper and lead smelting technology is either in use, or is currently being installed, by eight companies in eight countries around the world. Jameson Cell technology is widely used in the coal mining industry and increasingly in the base-metal industry. The IsaMills developed at Mount Isa and McArthur River made it possible to develop the McArthur River and George Fisher orebodies. This paper will address the need for innovation and then discuss the development of the IsaMill and Isasmelt technologies. It will conclude with some comments about why MIM has been so successful in developing such technologies.

Properly designed evapotranspirative (ET) cover systems can greatly reduce the amount of infiltration and groundwater recharge (deep percolation) into potential acid generating mine waste. In arid and semi-arid environments, infrequent precipitation, low measurable subsurface fluxes, spatial variability within mine waste and cover material, and evapotranspiration from below the cover system create challenges to monitoring moisture flux in these systems. Sloped ET single-layer (monolayer) cover depths and a variety of reclamation treatments are being studied at a copper tailing impoundment in Arizona, USA. To monitor the performance of different ET cover systems in response to precipitation patterns, four different test plots consisting of two different cover depths and two different vegetation densities were instrumented with heat dissipation sensor nests. The sensors measure the soil water pressure potential and allow hydraulic gradients to be determined within and below the cover systems to depths of 180 cm. Three replicate sensor nests were installed in each test plot to account for variability in materials and test plot treatments. Data collection occurs twice daily and is ongoing. Weather during the 26-month monitoring period was characterised by two months of greater than normal precipitation followed by nine months of normal precipitation and 15 months of abnormally dry conditions. Monitoring data indicate that deep percolation occurs in response to periods of extended precipitation, however, drying was observed to depths of six feet below the surface in all test plots. Using conservative assumptions regarding tailing hydraulic properties, one-dimensional downward flux predictions based on the monitoring data indicate very low (Additional long-term monitoring and installation of deeper and replicate monitoring sensors into tailings without cover systems are recommended to evaluate the long-term ET cover system performance and develop a better understanding of deep percolation rates at the sites.

Average annual growth in consumption of primary energy in Australia over the past ten years has been 5.5% compared to a world average of 4.1%. Over the next ten years growth rate is expected to increase to 6% per annum due largely to the rapid development in the mineral processing industry. By the end of the 1970's natural gas is expected to supply more than 9% of Australia's, primary energy market. Coal will supply 40% and petroleum products 47%. Nuclear energy will make its appearance but-will only make a small contribution in the period. Australia has adequate reserves of natural gas and coal to supply its needs in the 1970's and beyond. However the newly developed reserves of crude, while supplying 60-70% of requirements-in the initial years; will need regular and sizable additions if they are to .keep pace with the expanding consumption. For Australia to become self sufficient in the period 1970-1990 it is estimated *that new discoveries-will need to approximate. ten times the volume of recoverable reserves found in Australia to date. .

"The paper introduces the structure and work processes of outside auger hollow claw tipped mechanical sampler for coal. Twenty sets of claw tipped sampler performance tests show that: The design of inner hollow cylinder-type (?180 mm) can ensure to take a coal sample with nominal top size of 60 mm. Built-in self-cleaning piston pusher ensures no adherence and blocking of the sample. The operation practices show that the mechanical sampler can operate in order for taking coal sample with up to 16 per cent of total moisture. Claw closing design can avoid sample leaking or spilling during the claw lifting and ensure the integrity of primary increment. Ultrasonic positioning device makes the sampler capture the materials no less than 10 cm from the bottom of the wagons, basically meeting the requirement taking full depth of the sample. The precision and bias test indicates that the moisture and ash have no relative bias under the sampling process; the sampling precision is in accordance with the requirement in IS013909.At present, the spiral mechanical sampler is widely used for coal sampling but there are many limitations during application, for example: It is difficult to capture a large size sample, so the size range of a coal sample taken is limited. There is easy adhering or blocking for high moisture coal, which will result in the mixture of different increments, wear of sampler and the difficulties for cleaning and maintenance of sampler. It is difficult to capture the coal sample at lower than 30 cm from the bottom of the wagons, in order to avoid damage of the vehicle. It is possible for coal sample loss and spilling during the sampler lifting, due to the unsealed sampler.For the outside auger hollow claw tipped mechanical sampler designed for solving the above problems, the opening distance of the claw is the opening size of the sampler and makes the size range of the coal sample to be taken wide. During sampling, the two pieces of claws open and the sampler rotates vertically downward to capture an adequate coal sample after reaching the specific point. Then the two pieces of claws close tight automatically to ensure there is no coal leaking or spilling. This study data has been collected on a three-month period from November 2020 to January 2021 and based on three different pits: Vindaloo Main, Vindaloo Central and Bouere. Both pits having specific geotechnical and geological properties. Vindaloo Main, VIM, and Central, VIC, have the same mineral composition as volcanic tuff with felsic intrusion or monzodiorite, both rock mass is fractured with small joint. Geotechnically the uniaxial compressive strength UCS between 200 to 300 Mpa, Young’s Modulus 110 Gpa and Poisson’s ratio between 0.1 to 0.2. Bouere pit is basically made of volcanic tuff stock works as intrusive, UCS between 200 to 300 Mpa, Young’s Modulus 103 Gpa and Poisson’s ratio between 0.2 to 0.3. The first step of this study was to collect various data from mining operations around the drilling and blasting inputs. This was based around the different scenario of drilling parameters and the outcomes on the blasting, and how they impact load and haul operations and productivities of excavators from the heave to the last flitch. In most cases surface photos of the blast do not represent the overall fragmentation in the blast volume. Photos of the different flitches will not show only the effect of blast, as the loading operation generating more fragmentation by applying weight on the muck pile. Then the record of the different material uses for feeding. The last part of the analysis is the physical data from process plant such as particle size, throughput rate, both for the crusher and the mill, per pit and material and the specific Bond Work index (BWI). Fine particle quantity production is also a key point as is one direct indicator of milling performance. In overall, making link to BWI can influence at each stage of the mining to the processing operation. Drill and blast constitute a high cost in hard rock mining and trying to reduce these costs without an overview of all the integrated processes and context could end up by cost relocating to other activities in the process. However, the cost associated to size reduction builds exponentially as the particle size becomes smaller.

The Big Wainihinihi River and tunnel are located on the western side of the Southern Alps of New Zealand within the active Alpine Fault zone, which marks the boundary between the Pacific and Australian Tectonic Plates. The tunnel was built over 100 years ago to supply water for gold mining, but it now conveys water from a high-energy intake to a canal that supplies three of TrustPower’s hydro-electric power stations with a combined installed generating capacity of 10 MW. Part of the tunnel passes through an unstable 50° schist slope, which fi rst suffered a wedge failure in the 1929 Arthur’s Pass Earthquake and was reinstated in the mid-1970s for hydro generation. In 2008, TrustPower’s monitoring system showed that the wedge failure had remobilised and that urgent remediation was required.Harker Underground Construction (Harker) was awarded a design-build contract to restore the tunnel to service by tunnelling a new central section. Their geotechnical engineers, Peters and Cheung, reviewed the tunnel’s stability and proposed a new, safer tunnel alignment, deep behind the failure wedges. This work was based on their failure model, cost-benefit studies, and engineering geology completion mapping at the time of re-opening.Construction innovation was an important factor in ensuring the project’s success, as were detailed geological and geotechnical information, a robust methodology, strong client relationship and planning. To suit the varying rock conditions and restricted space, Harker combined a traditional drill-and-blast method with light-weight modular steel sets and timber supports to reduce construction costs and mitigate support risk. To make material handing easier in the tight conditions, a special electric locomotive was designed and built and blasting confi gurations were adapted to suit varying rock conditions in the highly fractured schist.The isolated site meant interesting and unexpected challenges, particularly communications and resources (both human and material). Despite that, the project was completed within budget, on schedule, and with no lost-time injuries.

The Dizon open pit mine of Benguet Corporation in western Central Luzon, Philippines has yielded some 182 000 t copper, and about 26 000 kg gold and 48 000 kg silver as by products since it started operation in November 1979. The 140 million tonne orebody is associated with a small quartz diorite porphyry stock emplaced in volcanic rocks on the basal slope of a stratovolcano complex as stockworks, fracture fillings and disseminated sulphide mineralization averaging 0.43% Cu, 0.93 g/t Au and 2.5 g/t Ag. Intense hydrothermal alteration accompanied the mineralization that developed fairly distinct mineral assemblages within and around the intrusive. Post-ore volcanic activity later gave birth to an upward-flaring diatreme which broke out south of and adjacent to the orebody and partially destroying it. Subsequent volcanic activity buried the mineralized area along with the rest of the stratovolcano's surrounding slopes under a thick deposit of pyroclastic and laharic debris. Erosion eventually removed the volcanic cappings over Dizon and also exposed the quartz diorite porphyry stock which might have resulted in the truncation of a sizeable section of the Dizon deposit. The chain of stratovolcanoes that comprise southeastern Zambales range hugging the southeastern edge of the Zambales ophiolite is part of a west-facing volcanic arc that extends for some 300 km along the western margin of central and southern Luzon whose development has been correlated to the subduction in the Manila Trench located off the west coast of Luzon. Prominent WNW-trending lineaments that cut across the ophiolite appear to be splays of the Philippine Fault whose intersection with the Mt. Pinatubo stratovolcano complex might have localized the emplacement of a number of intermediate stocks along with the gold-rich porphyry copper mineralizations associated with some of them.

Australia has seen unprecedented demand for coal exports in the last ten years and this demand is set to expand further still according to many analysts. This rapid increase in demand has placed pressure on multi-user coal chains to guarantee the capability to meet the required demand, in terms of both current operations and capacity expansion.The projects required to deliver these forecast tonnages take place in an increasingly complex commercial and technical environment. These challenges include brownfield and greenfield projects, multiple rail and terminal service providers as well as a myriad of mine operators, all needing to operate in an increasingly integrated manner to get the most out of expensive shared assets.Increasing complexity and integration drives the need for more holistic and sophisticated analysis tools. The capacity of coal chain subsystems, such as mine, rail and port, can no longer be determined effectively in isolation. Understanding the nature of the interactions between these subsystems and the resultant capacity of the integrated system is the key to maximising value. TSG advocates the use of a total integrated system approach to understand the behaviour and performance of complex coal chains.Recently, TSG has worked in conjunction with the Integrated Logistics Company and a number of stakeholders in the Dalrymple Bay Coal Chain to deliver the first independent system master plan. This master plan has provided a quantitative and rational assessment of coal chain capacity in its current state and a prediction of its capacity once a pipeline of committed capacity improvements is in place. It is underpinned by a highly detailed discrete-event simulation model of the complete coal chain as an integrated system, including mine load-outs, rail, terminal and port operations.This paper provides an overview of the study and describes the differences between subsystem and total integrated system model performance.

Australian mining and engineering companies have increasingly been investing in the mining industry in Brazil. It is a country of enormous mineral and agricultural wealth, with a well-established mining sector. Some Brazilian mining companies and personnel have been journeying in the opposite direction. There are significant differences in the approaches to engineering between the Australian and Brazilian industries that can cause confusion for companies operating in the other country. These range from differing expectations during the various stages of feasibility studies to style of plant and contracting strategies during the construction phase of projects. Some of the differences are driven by tax regimes, labour costs, or different settlement patterns. Others are the result of different histories and pressures on the industries in the two nations.This paper describes some of the differences in approach found in the two countries and some of the reasons for them.

The unpredictability of the location, grade and width of narrow-vein deposits presents difficulties for mine geologists and engineers attempting to estimate, schedule, forecast and mine their deposit profitably. This unpredictability stems not only from the grade distribution within a vein, but also the irregularity of vein geometry in three-dimensional (3D) space. Traditional deterministic methods of modelling vein geometry do not account for the inherent variability of the veins, resulting in significant errors when using limited drill hole information. This paper presents a probabilistic method of modelling narrow-vein deposits using sequential gaussian simulation (SGS), which can quantify this variability and improve production forecasts. Vein geometry, thickness and grade are simulated to provide a number of different equi-probable realisations that each honour the drill hole and face sample input statistics. An example is presented from the Augusta narrow-vein Au-Sb mine in central Victoria, where the simulation results are validated against the input data and survey pick-ups of the veins along ore drives.

With their commitment to sustainable development in an increasingly carbon-constrained world, many resources companies are focused on reducing the energy required to create their final products. In particular, the comminution and smelting of metal-bearing ores are both highly energy-intensive processes. If resource companies can optimise the energy efficiency across these two processing stages, they can directly reduce their overall energy consumption per unit mass of metal produced and thus reduce their greenhouse gas footprint. Traditional grinding and flotation models seek to improve the efficiency of mineral processing, but they do not consider the energy used by downstream metal production, eg smelting and refining. Concentrators and smelters individually may be running efficiently, but are they optimising energy consumption of the overall system? A key step towards answering this question is to understand whether it takes less energy to remove an impurity in the concentrator or the smelter. Analysis of the complete concentrator û smelter process chain may show that there are times when the concentrator should use more energy to reduce the overall energy requirements across the mill and smelter. The new methodology discussed here will integrate downstream processing energy with mineral processing energy, to find the overall most energy efficient circuit design and operating strategy. The proposed methodology includes: determining what grade and recovery positions can be achieved in the concentrator by using different combinations and amounts of grinding and regrinding, thermodynamic calculations of the energy used to process the different concentrate grades to metal, and integrating the concentrating and smelting models to find the lowest total energy for the system. A case study which investigates the effect of increasing regrinding energy on the overall mineral processing û smelting energy consumption is presented. For the copper-nickel sulfide ore investigated the addition of regrinding results in 11 per cent less energy being used in the overall concentrator û smelter process chain per tonne of metal produced. Although regrinding is often seen as an energy-intensive process, in this case study the use of 1 kWh of energy for regrinding reduces the overall energy consumption by 12 kWh. The new mill to melt methodology will allow companies to model energy consumption from mill to smelter with a view to reducing the energy-intensity and greenhouse gas footprint of their processing and smelting operations.

A new lead refinery with a. capacity of 230,000 tons per year com-menced operation at*Port'Plsie in October, 1959. This plant' superseded the refinery which had operated from 1933 with the advent of thecontinuous lead refining process. The incorporation of new equipment following local metallurgical developments, together with the overseas demand for lead of extremely low antimony content, created difficulties in operating the original plant. The new refinery project was under-taken to cover this disability and to gain the full advantage of the new processes.Desilverising and softening are carried out in units identical in size to those used previously. Metallic'zinc is now recovered from the entire output of desilverised bullion by vacuum distillation. Final refining is then carried out by batch'treatinent with caustic soda yield-ing lead of purity previously unattainable at Port Pirie.These two processes have replaced continuous dezincing by oxidation, a high temperature process which caused large quantities of lead and antimony to be recirculated. As the final stage is a .batch process the product composition can be.checked before casting. Individual batches can be adjusted to produce special alloys to,consumer's specification.Improved casting equipment has allowed the quantity production of pigs of good physical characteristics either as 56 lb bars or 2000 lb pigs. This, together with the high purity of the lead, has assured the B.H.A.S. position in world markets.Automatic control systems have been extensively employed particularly on the vacuum dezincing unit.The anticipated financial benefits have been achieved mainly by a reduction in the tonnage of recirculated materials, a smaller labour force, and reduced maintenance requirements.

As mines get deeper, the critical underground temperature limits will be exceeded, and an increasing number of mines will need to implement, expand or modify cooling systems. Surface cooling plants have many advantages over underground cooling such as efficient heat rejection, and lower relative capital cost; however the delivery of cooling through long underground distances can result in lost refrigeration capacity before the chilled air reaches the areas it is needed most. Refrigeration plants are therefore often overdesigned in size and capacity to compensate for underground losses.More mines are now utilising real-time monitoring and automated control of ventilation airflow and fan systems to ensure the conditions underground are safe and productive, and power consumption is efficiently managed. There may be significant opportunities to extend ventilation monitoring and control into the refrigeration delivery and control system.Energy reduction is an effective way to reduce costs and CO2 emissions, which is an increasingly important part of corporate governance. More efficient refrigeration control is a further step toward reducing energy consumption. This paper looks at an added step in how real-time monitoring can assist in controlling the output and chilled air delivery of a cooling plant. The requirements, implementation, benefits and challenges will be discussed.

In most instances, the application of high-chrome grinding media results in an increase in the recovery of the valuable mineral(s). The authors have published data from a number of plant-based case studies, which indicate that it is not unreasonable to expect a recovery increase in the vicinity of 1.5 to 2.0 per cent for a copper ore. It is of interest to understand where the increase in recovery is coming from. That is, is the additional copper recovery the result of improved fine particle flotation or is it due to an improvement across all size fractions?This paper aims to answer this question. Laboratory flotation tests were completed using forged steel and a high-chrome alloy on a volcanogenic massive sulfide copper ore. The unsized data indicated that the application of high-chrome grinding media to this ore resulted in an improvement in both copper recovery and copper concentrate grade. A detailed kinetic analysis of both the copper sulfide and gangue minerals was completed that clearly shows that the change to a more inert grinding media produced significant increases in the flotation rate constants (both fast and slow) across all size fractions. It is also possible to observe that the change in pulp chemistry has resulted in a decrease in the flotation kinetics of the -20 micron pyrite, while the coarse pyrite recoveries have increased, presumably because of an increase in the flotation of the chalcopyrite/pyrite composite particles.CITATION:Greet, C J, Jacques, S and Kinal, J, 2014. Metal production have long been using carbon sources as both reducing agents and energy sources. Consequently, the global extractive metal sector contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for approximately 9.5 per cent. Hydrogen gas offers as a promising ecofriendly alternative to carbon in metallurgical processes, serving as both a reductant and energy supplier with a by-product being only water vapour. However, the implementation of molecular hydrogen faces certain challenges related to the thermodynamics and kinetics of metal oxide reduction. In addressing these challenges, researchers have explored the application of hydrogen plasma, generated by subjecting molecular hydrogen to high energy to produce atomic, ionic and excited hydrogen species. Hydrogen plasma offers thermodynamic and kinetic advantages over molecular hydrogen and carbon-based reductants, exhibiting lower standard Gibbs free energy of reaction and activation energy. Therefore, hydrogen plasma can produce metal in fewer steps, process any oxide feed and feed size and even be used to refine metals. Despite these advantages, challenges exist in utilising hydrogen plasma in extractive metallurgy, including electricity costs, potential reverse reactions and industrial-scale implementation. This study provides a mini review of prior research on hydrogen plasma for metal oxides reduction, particularly iron oxide, as well as state-of-the-art techniques for its use in extractive metallurgy applications by mentioning several reactor types. Future prospects and scale-up possibilities of the hydrogen plasma in extractive metallurgy will also be presented.

The growth in production of beneficiated ilmenite products has been one of the most significant trends in the titanium feedstock industry over the past 30 years. In this period, the production of titanium slag and synthetic rutile has grown five-fold to the point where these products represented 56 per cent of total feedstock production in 2000. Additional production capacity is being proposed as the core component of new feedstock supply projects presently under consideration. A high proportion of these products is based on technologies for which the inherent quality of the is an essential factor. Location specific factors also play a large part in determining the cost of production. As the demand for such products grows, and the availability of favourably located sources of ilmenite of suitable quality declines, it can be expected that existing beneficiation technologies will become increasingly constrained. Existing beneficiation technologies, and those which have been developed, but are not yet commercially applied, are reviewed. Future issues which are likely to impact on the cost effectiveness of these technologies, or the quality of final products, are identified. These factors suggest directions for development of ilmenite beneficiation technologies to achieve economic production of the quality of feedstocks which will be demanded by the TiO2 pigment industry in the future.

Tomago sandbeds is an unconfined coastal aquifer located 20km. north of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. These sandbeds extend over an area of about 130km. The average aquifer depth is about 20m. with a mean transmissivity of about 400sq.m/day and a specific yield of about 0.2. The city of Newcastle and surrounding areas derive water from Tomago for potable purposes. The average extraction being about 50 ML/day. The iron value of the ground water varies between 5 and 15mg/1. This iron is removed by a conventional water treatment plant using Alum. The aquifer whilst principally quartzose also contains deposits of heavy minerals like rutile, zircon, ilmenite, etc., The mineral sand mining has been in progress at Tomago since 1972. Mining is carried out in a con- structed pond with a water depth of about 5m. on which is floated a suction cutter dredge that moves across the front of the pond using a water jet to entrain the soil from the ground surface to the bottom of the mineralised zone. Effect of mineral sand mining on ground water quality, particularly iron, was the subject of intensive investigations undertaken at Tomago since 1970. The effect on water quality was studied by collecting and analysing water samples from network of observation wells established during the period of mining. Water samples were collected about 4-5 years prior to mining and analysed for iron, sulphate, chloride, pH, etc., After mining the observation wells were re-established at the same locations and water samples were collected and analysed for at least 5 years after mining. Haul truck drivers are at a high risk of developing fatigue due to the monotonous nature of the work and demanding shift rosters. In the mining industry, fatigue is identified as a major contributing factor in several fatal accidents a year. A number of fatigue detection devices are now available, that can contribute to improved fatigue risk management in the mining industry. This paper describes the technology and algorithms behind one particular product which is both predictive and un-obtrusive to the operator. The Advisory System for Tired Drivers (ASTiD), was developed by Fatigue Management International (FMI) in collaboration with the Loughborough Sleep Research Centre (LSRC), both in the United Kingdom. While this system includes a model of the human circadian rhythm as a bias for predicting expected fatigue risk by time of day, it also uses yaw data generated by a solid-state gyroscope in the horizontal plane. Algorithms analyse this data to determine the level of monotony of actual driving conditions and to detect changes in steering control caused by driver fatigue. During normal levels of attention, a haul truck driver applies continuous, small adjustments to the steering wheel. As the level of fatigue increases, steering adjustments become less frequent and more erratic. Differentiating between these modes of control in the highly variable mining environment is accomplished by chromatic processing of the gyroscope data. This paper will go into some detail explaining the principles behind chromatic processing and the specific application of these in detecting fatigue in haul truck operators.Technology in itself is not the solution to addressing operator fatigue, but it plays an important role in ongoing monitoring and maintaining awareness with mining personnel. Furthermore, the specific principles behind ASTiD technology support a risk-based approach to fatigue management, allowing optimisation of the mining operation for productivity as well as safety.

Open access to forecasts of mine geotechnical performance in the form of open databases of model results has been considered risky in the past, with a concern that the results will not be understood or will be misused. However, some modelling techniques allow very high similitude modelling of mine deformation and the results can be presented as deformation, damage and other parameters which are unambiguous and which all engineers can be more easily trained to understand. With some effort, sufficient reliability and quantifications of error are possible to overcome many of the issues.Allowing more members of the planning team to have direct access to forecasts of mine deformation will promote awareness of geotechnical issues and will act as a mechanism for improving mine designs. The models will also be more easily integrated into quality assurance programs, by providing a framework for understanding measurement results.The sufficiency requirements for undertaking simulation aided mining engineering will be presented, included some conclusions about requirements for training, quality standards and software development.

The Thiess John Holland Group is undertaking the design and construction of Brisbane’s Airport Link Project, the largest single investment in transportation infrastructure in Australian history. Twin Herrenknecht TBMs are being used to bore parallel road tunnels from Kalinga Part in Toombul through to Lutwyche, a distance of 2.45 km. At 12.48 m, these tunnel boring machines (TBM) are the largest diameter machines, outside of Japan, to incorporate annular two-component type grouting through the tailskins.Grout design, preparation and injection have been given particular attention in this project in order to push the boundaries of achievement. Laboratory testing was conducted on various mix designs to ensure the contract specifi cations for grout strength could be met. To study the mechanics of the grout injection process, Herrenknecht supplied a test rig which duplicates the grout injection systems on the TBMs. Multiple recipes were tested, carefully selected to balance the requirements of rapid strength development with high mobility (to completely fill the void between the segmental lining and the ground) and minimal bleed.Team Mixing Technologies, Canada, was selected as the grout plant provider based on the technical performance of their high shear colloidal mill mixers. Field results have shown that the colloidal mixer prepared grout gives almost double the strength of an identical grout prepared by a paddle mixer.
