The objective of this paper is to examine the operation of high frequency screens in closed circuit grinding, where the outcomes achieved indicate favourable economic gains at the comminution stage and downstream processes, including flotation, dewatering, and filtration operations. The classification process in grinding circuits has been slowly evolving within the last century. The history of classification devices brings to mind rake classifiers and spiral classifiers, which although having higher efficiencies compared to hydrocyclones, were not able to keep pace with the evolution of concentrator equipment treating higher tonnages. This higher tonnage throughput has tended to drive the concept of utilising hydrocyclones as the classification stage in closed grinding circuits. The comminution process is commonly the most energy intensive stage of mineral processing. Researchers have determined that the classification stage in the comminution process has the greatest potential for improvement. This paper is intended to inform mineral process engineers of the benefits that high frequency screens offer over hydrocyclones. This will be done by reviewing the purpose for the evolution of classification in the comminution process, documenting past and recent studies, and explaining the modern technology that is currently available.

In this era of rising focus on the social and environmental costs and benefits of mining operations, the valuation methodologies used to assess such impacts become increasingly important. Within an industry dominated by an engineering culture that places emphasis on net present value (NPV) calculations using high discount rates, difficulties often arise when attempting to justify projects with longer-term, harder to quantify benefits. This is particularly so when these benefits fall in the social and environmental domains and involve other stakeholders. In this paper, we summarise the results of a recent literature review on this subject, which focused on the valuation of æBeyond ComplianceÆ initiatives in the mining sector. We discuss a range of approaches including the quantification of hidden internal costs, financial methods of incorporating risk into calculations, the integration of quantitative and qualitative information, and also the valuation of æexternalitiesÆ or costs and benefits borne by others. We then use a series of examples relating to the management of water in the minerals industry to illustrate how some of these approaches could be applied. There are high-level commitments from both individual companies and groups such as the ICMM to incorporate sustainable development criteria into decision-making processes within the industry. We conclude the paper by arguing that, to meet these commitments, there is a need for the industry to adopt a broader range of valuation methodologies than appears to be the case at present.

The New Southern Railway (NSR) involves the excavation of approximately 10 km of single bore tunnel from Tempe Reserve, Tempe, to Prince Alfred Park (PAP). PAP is located just south of Central Railway Station in SydneyÆs Central Business District (CBD). From Tempe Reserve the alignment takes the tunnel under Sydney Airport including the main north/south runway. Sydney Airport is approximately 8 km south of the CBD. The NSR is being constructed by a private group, the Transfield Bouygues Joint Venture (TBJV). Transfield is a major Australian contractor and the French contractor, Bouygues, is providing the soft ground tunnel construction expertise and is also responsible for the design of the concrete segmental lining. This paper sets out to present in some detail the issues involved in tunnelling under the airport and in particular under the north apron, the main north/south runway and the new elevated roadway. The paper concentrates on these three areas on the airport with an emphasis on the following. The risks involved and measures taken to minimise the risks in tunnelling under the International Terminal north apron (with Jumbo Jets parked immediately above). Secondly, settlement predictions, settlement and runway operation criteria and the actual settlements that have occurred on the main north/south runway. Finally, the criteria that was developed during the construction of the deep bored piers for the elevated roadway at the Domestic Terminal as the TBM passed through this area of construction activity.

The co-mixing of tailings and waste rock involves the intimate blending of tailings and waste rock to create a new material (Co-Mix) with superior physical and hydraulic properties. The new material has a low hydraulic conductivity, low compressibility, high water retaining capacity and high shear strength. Co-mixed tailings and waste rock restrict oxygen entry and water seepage to minimise acid generation and metal leaching. When compacted, Co-Mix materials have low volume change characteristics with respect to total stress and matric suction together with high shear strength. Co-mixed tailings and waste rock may be used to construct cover systems, internal barriers and seals, confinement structures or a full depth waste repository. The theoretical properties of Co-Mix blends are investigated. The results of a laboratory program to characterise the physical and hydraulic properties of co-mixed tailings and waste rock are presented. Various ratios of tailings were blended with different waste rock materials. Hydraulic conductivity tests were conducted at confining pressures ranging between 0 and 400 kPa. The saturated hydraulic conductivity for the Co-Mix materials was found to vary between 4 + 10-5 m/s and 5 + 10-9 m/s depending on blend ratio, waste rock type and confining pressure. These results together with other physical properties show excellent hydraulic and strength characteristics can be achieved for Co-Mix materials.

In the last 40 years, the froth flotation process widely spread in the paper industry becoming the dominant technology for ink removal from recovered paper slurries and cellulose fibres recovery. Most of current models used to describe the flotation deinking process are based on hydrodynamic and statistical theories of ink particles collision/attachment to air bubbles. The complexity of these theoretical models, together with the variability of the recovered papers composition, does not allow to define a set of æeasy to handleÆ equations to be used for modelling industrial flotation cells. This main limiting aspect makes that, in several deinking process modelling tools, basic parameters used to characterise the flotation unit, ie yield, ink removal efficiency, water loss, are constant parameters. Although in some process simulation tools the flotation yield/efficiency is adapted to process control parameters (air ratio, pulp flow, pulp consistency), physicochemical variables (namely the pulp frothing aptitude, the pulp surface tension and the ink adhesion energy to air bubbles) are not taken into account to adjust the flotation yield/efficiency. Data collected during recent laboratory and pilot plant experiments focusing on the role of surface active substances on the flotation efficiency were therefore interpreted and used to identify general trends that could be described with simple semi-empirical models. A set of model equations using surface tension and froth removal height as main variables was then defined in order to describe the behaviour of a pilot flotation cell. Trends obtained during the dynamic simulation of the deinking pilot plant were in good agreement with experimental data obtained under similar experimental conditions, thus indicating that developed equations can forecast with good approximation the behaviour of a flotation deinking unit.

Supergene processes in banded iron formation (BIF) result in important dissolution, material transport and simultaneous disorder of the residual bands. The rock physical properties such as density, porosity and rheology change during the weathering attack. The itabirite, Paleoproterozoic metamorphic BIF from Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF) û Brazil, shows several weathered facies. Strong linking between topographic surface, rock density and iron grade occurs within the weathered zones. This linking is due to partial dissolution of silica and carbonate from itabirite and gravitational rotation and break of the remaining blades, generating kink-like slump structures. The original itabirite density, 3.7 t/m3, decrease at the first leaching steps, until 2.7 t/m3, and increase at the end of the leaching process until 3.6 t/m3. Iron grade increases from 38 per cent to 68 per cent and depressions (sinkhole), subsequently filled by Cenozoic basinal sediments, are developed over the enrichment zones. The formation of important supergene iron ore deposits of QF is intimately related to such a process. Several iron deposits at QF, such as Pico do Itabirito, Fßbrica Nova, Casa de Pedra, Tamanduß, -gua Claras, Cappo Xavier, etc., reveal the aspects related to the proposed evolution, implying that the formational process of the soft iron ores had a regional character. Granular medium model helped in the understanding of the development of the structure and the formation of the deposits. A numerical model has been developed in order to simulate a leaching system in a two-dimensional matrix, composed of two types of materials: leachable and unleachable. Equal volume proportion and vertical banding were considered. Drilling data was used as multipoint attractors to remove leachable matrix nodes.

The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre has conducted an intensive VertiMill® (VTM) survey program at the Cannington mine concentrator as part of the ‘collaborative research in stirred milling technology’ program funded by Metso Minerals. Since 2003, Cannington has progressively added grinding capacity into the circuit through VTMs operating in secondary and regrinding duties. Cannington was one of the first mines to adopt this technology in secondary duty by installing two VTM-1500-WBs as part of a capacity expansion to produce sub-100 µm rougher feed. Subsequently, an additional VTM-800-WB was installed in the lead regrind circuit to prepare sub-20 µm cleaner stage feed.Several surveys were carried out to evaluate the VTM performance over a range of changed conditions. Among the key changes in operating variables were circuit power draw, feed rate and water addition to the bottom of the mill. The average specific energy for secondary duty was 3.7?kWh/t. The lead and zinc regrind mills consume 8.1 and 15.3 kWh/t respectively. Generally, the VTM installations have successfully prepared feed for rougher and cleaner circuits by reducing the top size into the floatable regime with steeper particle size distribution, which has led to enhanced recovery. The Division of Minerals and Geochemistry in collaboration with three mineral exploration companies, Mawson Pacific Ltd, Ramsgate Resources Ltd and Tectonic Systems Pty Ltd commenced a two year research project to investigate the application of remote sensing techniques to exploration for mineral deposits in access of the Yilgarn Block in Western Australia. The project utilizes satellite data such as day and night imagery from the NOAA-AVHRR (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) satellite. The recent research with the imagery in the Kalgoorlie, Southern Cross and Mt Magnet regions has highlighted the advantages of the mid infra-red and the two thermal response channels of NOAA-AVHRR for geological investigations. These three channels have the spectral resolution to distinguish stratigraphic units and younger intrusive bodies, and to delineate fracture zones and shear zones associated with Proterozoic dykes. But most important is the capacity to distinguish thermal signatures from geological structure, near-surface outcrop and palaeochannels which have been covered by unconsolidated sediments. The research project applies remote sensing methods including enhanced satellite imagery optimised to the Western Australian environment. It encompasses data from both space and airborne monitoring platforms that have obsreved a significant spectral response for the classification of alteration zone lithologies. It includes the collection of multiseasonal data from areas of interest which is essential both for the understanding of thermal characteristics of important lithologies and for the extrapolation from field work investigation to potential exploration areas. No comprehensive investigation of this type has been carried out within the Yilgarn goldfields.

The surface-to-inseam (SIS) directional drilling technique has been utilised at Oaky Creek Coal for more than a decade to predrain both the Oaky No 1 and Oaky North mining areas. The cumulative drilling program constitutes a total of 140 lateral and 200 vertical holes, and 405 km of lateral drilling.The use of SIS gas drainage has been successful with the following site-specific benefits being recognised:ability to drain German Creek seam gas contents to residual gas levels of new mining areas within an 18-month period from commencement of well productionstructural geological verification of the mine design well in advance of development mining occurring in an areaability to conduct successful predrainage of the overlying Aquila seam to reduce subsequent goaf emissions.Appropriate and up-to-date geological knowledge during the design and drilling process is a significant influence to achieving success. Vertical production wells need to be located in a position that is most effective to remove water from hole. The lateral hole should not include intersections with significant geological structure.SIS drilling provides continuous seam roof/floor data to help define seam geometry and locate geological hazards with high accuracy. In faulted ground and with variable seam gradients, SIS data can resolve geological ambiguities from seismic sections and enhance seam correlation that would otherwise be available only from discrete and closely-spaced infill vertical exploration drilling.Here, we review some examples of SIS configurations and practice to highlight key learnings in drilling long inseam holes (up to 1900 m per arm) ahead of development and mining. An 8 ha trial landform was constructed in late 2009 at the Ranger Uranium Mine, located 250 km east of Darwin in the wet-dry monsoonal tropics of northern Australia. The objective of the trial, which comprises two surface cover types on a uniform two per cent slope, is to provide long-term data to guide the development by Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) of its landform closure strategy. The scope of the work program for the landform includes many aspects; however, this paper is focusing on run-off and erosion rates. The run-off and erosion rates are used to assess the long-term geomorphic stability by comparing measured with modelled export rates from a landform evolution model.Monitoring of wet season run-off is undertaken collaboratively by the Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist (ERISS) and ERA, on four purpose-instrumented 30 m by 30 m erosion plots. Continuous measurements are made in rectangular broad crested (RBC) flumes located at the outflow of each plot, of water level, turbidity (a surrogate for fine suspended sediment) and electrical conductivity (EC) (a surrogate for solutes). Each plot has a tipping bucket pluviometer located near the RBC flume. Bed load is collected monthly.This paper reports the findings of rainfall and bed load from the first two wet seasons (2009 - 2010 and 2010 - 2011) following construction. The field measured loads will be compared with the predictions made by the Cellular Automaton Evolutionary Slope and River (CAESAR) landform evolution model. Initial results indicate that predicted rates of sediment export from the CAESAR model are similar to measured export rates. This provides confidence in the capability of the model to predict stability of the future rehabilitated mine area, especially during the critical initial years following construction. Ever since it made its debut in 1962, in the form of a Robbins 31R, the raiseborer has become an accepted tool in the mining and civil construction industries. The first raiseborer to be used in the Witwatersrand goldfields made its appearance in 1968. This was a Robbins 42R which could raisebore 185m deep holes to 1,22m diameter. From 1968 to 1973 capability increased with the introduction of first the 61R, then the 71R and finally the 83R, which could raisebore 610m deep holes to 3,66m diameter. This created a demand for larger holes but the cost of bigger, more powerful machines requiring larger, stronger drill pipe, cutters and other accessories was prohibitive. To avoid replacing existing models such as the 71R, and in order to increase their capability, the concept of reaming in two stages sequentially was developed jointly by a German drilling equipment manufacturer, Wirth, their South African subsidiary, Transbor, and a local contractor, Rocbor Raiseboring and Mining Contractors. The result, the Sequential Reaming Head, proved most successful and existing machines, normally limited to 2,44m diameter holes, could now ream to 3,66m diameter. This created a demand for even larger holes. In order to maximise the use of the sequential reaming head to meet this demand the HG330, and subsequently the HG330SP raiseborer were developed. Using a 4,26m/6,02m cutting head, these machines have raisebored holes 1000m deep in hard rock. The raise- boring of the first major hole to be excavated by this combination, the 484m deep x 6,02m diameter surface shaft at Premier Mine is described. Reference is also made to six other shafts which have been completed or are under construction.

Quebec Iron Ore (QIO), a subsidiary of Champion Iron Limited (Champion), completed the restart of the Bloom Lake iron ore mine located in the heart of the Labrador Trough region of Northern Quebec, Canada in February 2018. Prior to its restart, the concentrator flow sheet underwent major upgrades which brought the iron recovery to the highest of all Labrador Trough operations. After two profitable years of production, QIO, supported by Soutex, started to look at technologies to improve its current performance and integrate into its expansion project flow sheet. From the lessons learned while optimising Phase 1, the addition of a scavenger-cleaner processing stage was identified as an improvement opportunity to increase recovery, produce a higher-grade product, and further improve the stability of concentrate quality. In 2019, the NI-43101 feasibility study for the Phase 2 expansion, aiming to double the production of high-grade iron ore concentrate, was published. Based on the metallurgical test work, the hydraulic classifier was selected to perform the scavenger-cleaning duty for its well-established performance and known behaviour at the cleaning step in the Phase 1 plant. To validate laboratory results, a pilot scavenger-cleaning hydraulic classifier was installed in Phase 1. Although the hydraulic classifier was selected for the feasibility study, metallurgical test work performed with the REFLUX® classifier showed interesting potential. It was thus decided to also install a pilot RC300 Reflux classifier at the scavenger-cleaning stage in Phase 1. Despite their apparent great similarities, the metallurgical performance was significantly different, and many dozens of sampling campaigns highlighted the different performance of both pieces of equipment considering the feed material particle size. This article presents the pilot plant results in terms of recovery, selectivity and stability for both the Reflux classifier and the hydraulic classifier operated in a scavenger-cleaner stage at the Bloom Lake iron ore concentrator.

"Although a resource model is central to the mineral resource value estimation process (Glacken and Snowden, 2001), creating it is a labour intensive task and in the end it is a limited representation of the actual orebody. Creating this resource model is a labour intensive task that requires inputs from geology, mining, metallurgical and commercial disciplines. It requires thousands of samples from hundreds of drill holes to be verified, grouped in geological domain, interpolated and then valued. Even after all this effort, a model is only an estimation; therefore further significant effort has gone into quantifying uncertainty in the model and subsequently risk around any value estimates derived from the model. Further risks to model quality are introduced through poorly conditioned data or incorrect assumptions.This paper proposes the application of machine learning to automate the resource model development. Machine learning is applied to the traditionally manual tasks of geological formation, domain identification and validation of the block model mineralogy. Through automation the resource estimation process can be accelerated, allowing more drill holes or a larger resource body to be processed in a given time frame, or allowing the process to be more agile to changes in input data and assumptions. A case study based on drill hole data from a Western Australian iron ore deposit (Government of Western Australia, Department of Mines and Petroleum, 2015) is used to demonstrate the application of machine learning in this process.CITATION:Oliver, S and Willingham, D, 2016. "The rise of autonomous haul truck fleets may have been initially driven by the rapid escalation of the cost of equipment operators, but the actual improvements reported by the major iron ore miners far exceeds the simple reduction in workforce. Utilising cost models developed for feasibility studies and mining contract modelling, the limits of cost improvements due to simple labour reductions are compared to those achieved by the early autonomous fleet adopters and through traditional process improvement techniques such as fleet class upgrades or hot-seating of equipment. As autonomous fleet implementation matures, it is likely that the gains seen by current adopters will seem minor compared to the limits generally governed by the limit of equipment utilisation. "Most new mining projects require an initial assessment of the locations and volumes of potential acid forming (PAF) waste that is likely to be moved and dumped in surface waste stockpiles. This requires sampling of the waste rock zones and submitting the samples for a series of tests. Key to the outcome of the waste characterisation process is obtaining sufficient samples that are representative of the various rock types both in number and spatial distribution.Various regulatory bodies throughout Australia and the rest of the world are currently struggling with how to define minimum amounts of sampling to achieve realistic estimates without imposing excessive costs and time constraints on a project.This paper addresses two aspects of the process: what constitutes a æsufficientÆ number of samples how to use those samples in determining volumes of likely PAF material.Geostatistical methods of characterising orebodies with large numbers of samples are routinely used in the mining industry by geologists and geostatisticians to estimate and classify Mineral Resources. In theory exactly the same methods can be used to estimate PAF waste locations and volumes.In practice the number and spatial distribution of dedicated PAF waste samples at feasibility stage is typically so small that it is almost impossible to estimate the spatial distribution of PAF material with any degree of confidence at all. Consequently, the common approach is to characterise a few samples from a lithological unit and then assume that they represent the unit as a whole. Organic carbon is a major ore contaminant at MMG’s Century mine. This carbonaceous matter is associated with shale hosted sphalerite mineralisation. It occurs as elongated lamellae and as inclusions in porous sphalerite aggregates which are fine grained and difficult to liberate from sphalerite. The carbon prefloat circuit was designed to remove the liberated organic carbon in order to mitigate excessive reagent consumption, contamination of the lead and zinc concentrates and poor flotation performance in the primary zinc circuit. The consequence of organic carbon removal is that sphalerite and galena minerals are lost to the prefloat concentrate. A Jameson Cell was installed in late 2005 as a prefloat cleaner cell. Operational experience showed that the cell became capacity limited during periods of high amounts of organic carbon in the feed and was subsequently bypassed.Reactive style operating strategies were implemented to manage the effects of insufficient organic carbon removal by the prefloat circuit but due to the relatively large circuit residence time, upstream changes meant hours before the downstream circuits were stabilised following a disturbance from excess carbon.This paper describes the modifications and testwork undertaken to enable the Jameson Cell to be operated during periods of high organic carbon in the float feed and the implementation of process control initiatives to proactively remove the required prefloat mass from the float feed to eliminate the reactive style operating strategy.The process control modifications centred on dynamically targeting a prefloat mass recovery determined by an equation relating the carbon to zinc ratio to the carbon prefloat mass as a percentage of the float feed. The equation was developed by analysing historical data. These improvements served to optimise the prefloat circuit and consequently stabilise the downstream lead and zinc circuits.

The Waihi underground mining operation currently mines epithermal veins ranging from two metres up to ten metres in width using a ‘Modified Avoca’ stoping method. This method consists of longhole bench stope mining at 15m to 18m sublevel spacing. The bulk of production drilling and blasting is top down with the extraction length of a typical stope panel nominally being 18m to 20m along strike. A stope panel is usually taken in two blasting cycles followed by the remote bogging of the stope ore. The panel is backfilled in-cycle using unconsolidated waste rock material which is tipped into the void from the upper level using a Caterpillar R2900 or R1700 sized underground loader. The underground mine first commenced production in 2008 and up until 2016, as was typical of many open stope mining operations at the time, an underground loader was used to place a waste rock bund at the top brow of the open stope. This rock bund was the principal means of protecting people and equipment from this hazard. In 2016 there was a fatality at the mine when a loader that had been tasked with building this rock bund fell into the stope void. Immediately post incident all mining and processing operations were suspended for a week to allow colleagues to grieve, to observe cultural protocols and to begin the investigation into this event. During this period senior operators, supervisory and technical staff developed an innovative system which used steel bollards to protect this open edge. With development over the following months this bollard system has eliminated this hazard from the Waihi underground mine.

"The Chesney deposit, located 4 km south-east of Cobar consists of three copper-gold rich shoots that lie within a larger, copper dominant lode. A fourth gold rich shoot is located adjacent to the main deposit. The deposit exhibits a strong structural control on mineralisation, as brittle deformation during subvertical extension provided the requisite structural traps to precipitate sulfides from solution. It is postulated that the Great Chesney Fault acted as a fluid conduit, conveying fluids to the site of orebody formation. The continual supply of fluids resulted in cyclic brittle deformation when the fluid pressure exceeded the lithostatic pressure and the tensile strength of the Great Cobar Slate.Evidence supports the hypothesis that ore deposit formation was controlled by: a supply of mineralised fluids transported along the Great Chesney Faulta suitable location for the mineralised fluids to accumulate, accommodated by vertical extension and dilation in certain locationsthe creation of suitable structural traps to capture the sulfides. These traps formed as a result of fault-valve behaviour. In flotation cells, especially in large flotation units, froth management is a crucial variable that should be considered during the design phase or optimised to improve the performance of existing flotation circuits. This paper presents a simulation evaluation of the effect of launder design on the metallurgical performance of an industrial flotation circuit consisting of five TankCell® e630 (630 m3 ) cells in a Cu rougher duty. This analysis was carried out using a new industrial simulator, which was built on a wide database collected from many industrial concentrators. This tool is currently incorporated into HSC Chemistry® software and allows evaluation of the effect of launder design on mineral froth recovery, water recovery, entrainment, and other variables to be quantified. The industrial flotation circuit was evaluated under different launder design scenarios, considering an actual flotation circuit that includes TankCell® e630 cells for calibration and as a reference (baseline). Firstly, two different designs were evaluated in the full circuit: a standard launder design and a new launder technology. It was found that the new launder technology enabled improvement of the mineral recovery along the circuit, mainly for coarse particles, due to the improvement in froth mineral recovery. Next, the partial upgrade of the launder design along the circuit was analysed. Thus, the new launder technology was evaluated in the first and the last two cells of the bank. The results showed that upgrading the launders in different cells along the circuit delivered an increase in the final recovery with respect to the baseline, with a partial impact on the concentrate grade. However, these changes are less than those when evaluating the full upgrade scenario. A partial launder upgrade either in the first or last two cells of the bank showed similar final recoveries, but the latter enabled a slightly higher concentrate grade (about 1 per cent higher) to be achieved. Finally, the evaluation of launder design using the industrial simulator made it possible to estimate its effect on variables that are not commonly obtained from plant surveys, including froth recovery per particle size, collection recovery per particle size and liberation, gangue entrainment and bubble loading grade.
