The sustainable management of surface water associated with coal mining and coal seam gas projects is a considerable factor affecting the global competitiveness of these resource companies operating in Australia. Management of surface water can be costly, but effective water management and hence environmental stewardship enhances corporate social responsibility and the social license to operate. The surface water issues for the two industries are comparable, yet there is currently a lack of alignment between how Queensland, where the majority of AustraliaÆs coal seam gas projects are located, manages and regulates water on coal mine projects and coal seam gas projects.This paper provides a high level comparison of Queensland legislation and highlights the lack of alignment of this legislation regarding surface water management in these two industries. Through a case study, it looks at the surface water management process at a coal mine site based on the current legislation and principals of surface water management. QueenslandÆs lack of alignment in legislation regarding surface water management in these industries is understandable given the different development paths and time scales of the two industries. The coal mining industry has developed over a long period of time and the legislation has progressed in parallel, whereas, the coal seam gas industry is relatively new in Australia and the legislation has had to advance quickly. The challenges of increasingly scarce water resources and the risk of dam failures has seen the mining industry turn to sustainable tailings management solutions such as dewatering and dry stacking. Filtering tailings has been seen in the past as a cost-prohibitive process for larger throughput mines. However, as larger pressure filters are developed, the economic case for filtered tailings has gained traction.Focus has largely been placed on the correct design and operation of the filters. It is critical, however, that the material handling portion of the disposal system is also properly designed and operated. Thorough testing at laboratory and pilot scale to determine the conveying properties of the filtered material needs to be conducted. This testing will insure the material handling system meets the important availability needs of the mine even during periods of variability in the upstream processes and mine plan.The control system must also be robust and flexible in design to compensate for this upstream process variability. The paper provides an overview of the various analytical and microanalytical techniques currently in use to characterise the outcomes of pyrometallurgical processes, examining the advantages and limitations of these approaches. Specific focus with be given to quantitative microanalysis techniques including electron probe microanalysis and laser ablation, covering general principles, capabilities and limitations and recent development to address specific challenges associated with analysing molten slag, matte, and alloys, highlighting the necessity of embracing the application of these and other innovative analytical methodologies.

The Mine is an underground zinc (Zn), lead (Pb) and silver (Ag) operation in central New South Wales (NSW). Broadly speaking the Mine has two domains that require rehabilitation, the mine industrial area (MIA) and the tailings storage facility (TSF). The MIA has been used for the handling and processing of ore and contains elevated sulfate, sulfide and metals (Pb, Zn). The TSF receives the by-products of processing, that is, potentially acid forming (PAF) tailings which also contain elevate sulfate, sulfide and metals. Typically, the rehabilitation of a TSF involves two controls. Firstly, controlling the potential for PAF tailings to form acid rock drainage (ARD) by limiting interaction with oxygen. Secondly, once the tailings are unsaturated, limiting interaction with water (usually as rainfall) to reduce the potential for ARD to be transported to the receiving environment. These two controls are often employed in the form of a cover.In semi-arid environments there are many Australian examples of covers that have been built to limit interactions of mine by-products with oxygen and water. Typically, the covers contain one or more layers and are built from soil and rock which may include run-of-mine rock. The Mine however has limited supplies of stockpiled soil; and run-of-mine rock is not generated in large volumes because it is used as backfill underground. A cover design strategy was developed to cater for these limiting factors. The strategy identified soil, ore and rock accretion (the accretion) below the MIA could be a potential source of borrow material for the cover. The purpose of this paper is to describe the cover design process, the method and results of large (2 m tall) column trials that were used as a cost-effective way to trial three cover options and finally, the paper describes the water balance that was developed from the column trial results and subsequent modelling using SVFlux.CITATION:Rohde, T K and Jamson, N, 2018. The effect of accurate detonator delay timing on blast results can now be studied with the development of the ICI Electronic Detonator. This detonator has an accuracy and precision orders of magnitude greater than the current range of pyrotechnic delay detonators. A series of field trials have been conducted to quantify the effect of delay accuracy and timing on blast performance. These trials have demon- strated that delay timing can have a marked influence on blast fragmen- tation, muckpile displacement, blast vibration and airblast.

Many open pit mining operations seek to control blasting-related movement of ore and waste to minimise loss and dilution. Tracking the movement of ore boundaries can result in the maximisation of ore recovery and minimisation of waste sent to the mill, thereby optimising the economic performance of the operation.A novel solution for tracking the ore–waste boundary location before and after a blast uses subsurface markers placed along the boundary with all measurements and scans conducted remotely from the blast block. Upon system activation, user-operated equipment on the surface determines the three-dimensional (3D) location of the subsurface markers.The patented system concept combines two electromagnetic mechanisms, magnetic positioning and radio frequency through-rock communications to enable remote battery-powered markers, buried within the rock to be accurately located in 3D space.Field trials at a quarry have demonstrated the system can comfortably handle over 100 subsurface markers with a complete scan, including set-up, taking less than an hour. Teleseismic travel time residuals measured on 600-1000 km seismic arrays across the Rio Grande and East African rifts provide evidence for upper mantle low velocity zones beneath each rift of velocity contrast 6%-8%. Refraction studies show thinning of the crust below the rift axes. Regional uplift which extends hundreds of km either side of the axes, is isostatically compensated by negative density contrast at depth. Since the refraction argues against compensation by thickened crust, compensation in the upper mantle low velocity zones is suggested. Temperature effects alone can not explain the reduced velocities. Generation of a few percent of partial melt is the most probable source of the reduction. A passive extensional mechanism is investigated for the Rio Grande rift in which hot asthenosphere intrudes the lithosphere raising its temperature and generating moderate melting. It requires less than 1% extension to explain the melting but a prodigious 26% to raise the temperature from a pre-rifting continental geotherm to the solidus. Geological estimates find that extension is less than 10% over the uplift zone. Such a mechanism is possible only if the prerifting lower lithosphere geotherm lies closer to the solidus than that of stable continent. This is supported by the observed high heat flow in the Rio Grande rift uplift region which, given the long time constant for thermal diffusion, reflects elevated temperatures at depth well in advance of the onset of rifting.

About 15 years ago the debate on the reliability of sampling procedures for agricultural food and feed commodities was initiated by a few brave scientists who questioned the representativeness of what, at the time, were routine sampling procedures established exclusively on the basis of tradition and practical feasibility. Over time several national and international organisations contributed to the discussion, developing standards and publishing papers either to underline the fact that sampling is always a source of error, in itself, which cannot be overlooked, or to minimise the relevance of sampling on the basis of argumentations linked to time and money limitations. The latter dominated, but is nevertheless impossible to accept from both a scientific and a responsible management perspective. Here the author presents an historical overview of these past 15 years, illustrating the most controversial issues, reporting major achievements in food/feed sampling, highlighting milestones, as well as unresolved problems that still need the attention and contribution from the sampling community. The need to incorporate Theory of Sampling (TOS) into food/feed safety assessment (pre-market), as well as into food/feed safety monitoring (post-market) has recently been highlighted, and the practical applicability of TOS to base food/feed safety decisions on representative sampling, has been explored and documented via concrete examples of risk analysis in different areas of food/feed industrial production chains. Now it is time to move forward and ensure that TOS is fully integrated into the well-established Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) / World Health Organization (WHO) risk assessment approach, in order to guarantee a transparent and correct universal frame for risk assessment and the subsequent management decision-making process. WCSB8 offers the ideal platform to explore the best way to do so, switching from a theoretical discussion of correct sampling principles for food and feed agricultural commodities to practical recommendations in the interest of consumers, worldwide. These 15 years have also been a personal journey of interesting dimensions, indeed a veritable roller-coaster ride in-and-out of the scientific, technological, industrial and (last but not least) regulatory worlds. The start was WCSB2 in 2004, when I flew to Australia to discover if in other areas sampling had been identified as an unavoidable issue and, if so, what the solution was. There, I found a good travel companion who today is still on my side, to assemble the puzzle and explore how to shape the future, to concretely answer to the 15 years’ quest for proper sampling in the assessment and monitoring of food/feed safety.CITATION:Paoletti, C, 2017. A brief history of the mineral sands industry is given from a radiation protection standpoint, with gamma radiation and inhalation of radioactive dust being identified as the main sources of radiation exposure of persons working in the plants. The principal sources of gamma radiation exposure are identified and the history of early bagging methods is discussed. The concept of ALARA is introduced and the impact of the "bulka bags" (and more effective monazite storage facilities) are detailed as illustrative examples of dose minimization, together with the requirements for the transport of monazite. The dose from radiation received from inhaled dust is dependent on a number of parameters of the dust, some of which are not well known. ICRP 30 (1978) makes recommendations relating to the intake of radionuclides by workers. These recommendations are discussed with respect to the inhalation of dust containing thorium. The possible pathways of radioactive material throughout the body are also described. The effect of having parameters that differ from ICRP 30 is discussed and suggestions are made relating to measurements that can be carried out to more accurately determine these parameters. Since in some instances the exposures to dust yield personal doses which may exceed the annual ICRP 30 based limits, it is necessary to define more accurately parameters of the dust so as to determine more accurately personal Doses.

The Yabulu refinery of Queensland Nickel Pty Lld near Townsville now imports more than three million wet tonnes per year of nickel laterite ore from New Caledonia and Indonesia, making it the largest importer of any commodity in Australia. The project has illustrated that importing untreated bulk ore and re-exporting high value products makes good economic sense for the company and the nation.The economics of this exercise were considerably enhanced in 1994 by changing the project's principal product from nickel-oxide sinter to refined high-purity nickel metal. It is one of the few operations in the world where nickel ore is transformed to nickel metal at a single site.Several novel technological processes were developed at Yabulu and incorporated into the refinery to allow this product transition to occur. By utilising internally developed technology the new processes were installed at a capital cost of less than $10 million. It is unique for a large nickel producer to change completely the quality of its entire product range many years after the plant was constructed and considerable attention to marketing the new products has been required.The changes have meant that the project is no longer limited to selling lower-value oxide sinter to a relatively small number of large stainless steel mills. In the past year sales of the new high purity nickel metal products have expanded to include a broad range of international customers in the special alloy, foundry and chemical industries.

Mine operators use grade control to determine the destination of each block of material in the mine. In polymetallic mines, grades are best expressed in dollars: the Net Smelter Return, NSR, per tonne. To estimate NSRs, geologists working on grade control develop models for each geometallurgical domain in the mine. These models may incorporate observations on the mineralogy and grain sizes of the material being examined. The site’s mill operators contribute to the models by providing geologists with statistical analyses that relate assay results and mineralogical compositions to metallurgical parameters, such as the rates of recovery of each economic metal to each of the concentrates produced, and the compositions of those concentrates. The team responsible for sales and marketing of the site’s products contributes to the NSR models by providing details of the costs of shipping concentrates to smelters and refineries; and by providing figures that are specified in the smelter contracts, such as the payability of the metals in each concentrate and the fees charged by the smelter. The mill operators also provide, for the NSR models, equations to estimate the rates of recovery of deleterious materials to each concentrate. Deleterious materials comprise mostly halogens and amphoteric elements, both of which reduce the efficiency of smelters. Furthermore, deleterious materials such as antimony and arsenic may be poisonous to people and to the environment. The sales and marketing team provide specifics of the penalties that smelters impose upon deleterious materials. These penalties may reduce NSRs by tens of percent, possibly to levels below the cut-off grade. Thus, in the blocks that are subject to grade control, mine geologists monitor not only the concentrations of economic metals, but also the presence and abundance of deleterious materials. The preparation and maintenance of models, to estimate NSRs and to assess changes in the levels of potentially toxic materials to be mined, requires close and continuing consultation between corporate departments. There must be strong communication of mine geologists with the mill operators; with the people who market the mine’s concentrates; and, should there be a risk of encountering toxic levels of deleterious materials, with the mine’s health, safety and environmental officers. This co-operation could require radical changes in the structure of many organisations. However, experience suggests that such changes can significantly improve the profitability of a mine.

The Karara Mine concentrator commenced operation in November 2012 to produce high-grade magnetite concentrate. The circuit consists of three stages of comminution plus magnetic separation at each stage for early gangue rejection. High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) are used for fine crushing, followed by ball mills and TowerMills in secondary and fine grinding duties respectively. In recent times, the plant throughput rate has had to exceed design by 18% to maintain the targeted concentrate productivity. Meanwhile, the ore hardness has increased by 25% to 15 kWh/t, leading to changes in the circuit operation and design. These changes led to coarser and harder feed to the TowerMill circuit that affects the subsequent separation processes. Nippon Eirich (the TowerMill manufacturer) has partnered with Karara Mining Limited (Karara) to optimise the TowerMill circuit operation to achieve a circuit product with an 80% passing (P80) of 35 µm. Several activities, including a TowerMill circuit audit and performance evaluation, multi-component analysis, modelling and simulation, were carried out as part of the optimisation exercise. The circuit audit results revealed that the TowerMill circuit feed size F80 had increased and ranged from 67–75 µm. The circuit product P80 ranged between 42–55 µm. The average circuit specific energy was 3.4 kWh/t. Moreover, the differences in density between magnetite and gangue minerals had affected the hydrocyclone performance where the efficiency curve exhibits coarse end deflection indicating that low-density coarse material was bypassing to the overflow stream. A multi-component analysis was carried out to further investigate the coarse end deflection of the hydrocyclone efficiency curve. The analysis showed that the magnetite and gangue minerals had different cut sizes of 32 and 64 µm respectively. Furthermore, 33% of the magnetite (below 35 µm) was being recycled back to the mill due to the density effect. Based on these findings, several recommendations for process improvement were identified and implemented including:• converting to a bottom feeding configuration to improve the grinding efficiency in the mill• additional grinding power in the fine grinding duty to compensate for the increase in plant throughput and ore hardness• improved classification efficiency by converting to smaller size hydrocyclones. Simulation studies carried out to evaluate the impact of these implementations had indicated that a P80 close to 35 µm with a steeper size distribution could be achieved by using the bottom feed configuration with additional grinding power. The TowerMill circuit was converted to bottom feed configuration and the performance was evaluated. The operating work index, size specific energy and circulating load were 30% lower than the top feed configuration, indicating that the bottom feed configuration had a higher grinding efficiency. It is well known in the industry that good classification system performance is vital to efficient ball mill circuit performance. But what is meant by good classification system performance, and how is it achieved? Unfortunately, the perceived complexity of classification systems, and the day-to-day time demands placed on the practicing metallurgist, all too often put the low-hanging fruit of classification system optimisation in the ‘I’ll do it later’ basket. Additionally, lingering confusion about basics such as the relationship between circulating load ratio and ball mill circuit performance makes the optimisation objective seem nebulous to both plant metallurgist and designer.Some of this confusion can be eliminated by taking a step back from the overwhelming detail of sharpness of separation curves, circulating load ratios, cyclone feed pressures, vortex and apex sizes etc, and focusing on the purpose or function of the classification system – to apply mill power to particles that need further size reduction! The classification system efficiency (CSE) metric captures how well the classification system is performing its function with two quick and easy size distribution analyses.Once CSE is understood and implemented as the optimisation criteria, well-tested methods for improving CSE can be implemented and quickly measured at plant scale to give confidence that the right change was made.This paper will describe CSE and how it is measured in practice. Next, a guide for improving CSE through manipulation of design and operating variables in the classification system will be provided. The Tropicana deposit was discovered in 2005 after AngloGold Ashanti followed up an unexplained gold-in-soil anomaly. Discovered in a remote, barely-explored area of Western Australia not previously thought prospective for gold, Tropicana is the most significant gold find in Australia for more than a decade. The new, large scale open pit gold mining operation will produce an annual production of around 330 000 to 400 000 oz over a ten year mine life mining around 60 Mt/a.Process plant construction started in early 2012 and is due to finish in the December 2013 quarter. The mining contract was awarded to Macmahon Holdings (Macmahon) and mining commenced in July 2012 using conventional drill and blast, truck and excavator open cut methods.As a construction and start-up project in a greenfields location, the establishment of mining activities at Tropicana Gold Mine (TGM) involves the implementation of technical and operational systems, including the mining contract. Some of these systems and likely challenges were identified during earlier studies, while others were not foreseen until they were encountered. Alternatively, the time frames around implementation change depending on the changing knowledge of the project and industry environment. These systems include those common to the industry and those specific to the operation and location.This paper examines the implementation and development of a number of the systems specific to the establishment of mining operations, including the history, process and some outcomes. Although expected to be discrete systems to implement, they become interdependent. One of the main energy efficiency opportunities identified from the majority of mine site energy audits is to optimize the comminution circuit to reduce energy consumption through improved throughput and product size distribution. Typical analysis reviews comminution process efficiency/inefficiency i.e. utilization of grinding mills, process bottlenecks and product vs. target size, to identify instances of overgrinding or undergrinding. From this, it is possible to establish the potential improvement that could be gained through formal plant optimization and what the optimization program would entail. It can also sometimes reveal immediate opportunities for process improvement. This paper presents steps that can be taken to optimize the efficiency of comminution circuits.

Too often in mine planning, maximising revenue-generating material takes precedence over minimising costs. The ability to target both revenue and cost optimisation enables mine plans to fulfil corporate objectives of targeting maximal project net present value (NPV). The state of current mining costs and increasing government regulations in Australia are forcing many mine planners to pay closer attention to cost minimisation. Dumping waste material, which ultimately forms waste landforms, represents a large cost to mining operations. A general mine, with a waste to ore strip ration of 6:1, allocates approximately 32 per cent of total mining costs to waste haulage alone (Gregory, 2003).Most scheduling packages do not dynamically build economic or minimal cost dumps as part of the scheduling process. In most cases, waste dumps are built after a mining schedule has been defined. Automated software is now available which dynamically schedules the pit and waste dumps together. The overall shape of the waste dump is therefore dictated by minimum cost or minimum haulage hours.The purpose of this paper is to compare dynamic pit and waste schedules to traditional methods which apply haulage estimations after defining the mining schedule. This paper includes a case study on the large open pit operation at Tropicana Gold Mine, a joint venture between AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd (70 per cent) and Independence Group NL (30 per cent). The operation will focus on mining three large open pits over a 13-year mining life. A total of 397 Mt of waste is mined and directed to multiple destinations including waste dumps, the run-of-mine (ROM) pad and tailings storage facility (TSF) perimeter.Due to these complexities, management of the haulage fleet, especially during the critical period of operation readiness and start-up, is essential. Most new engineers in the mining industry do not realise the importance of legal obligations. During investigations the first question you are asked is: Do you have any proof or evidence? The smallest detail in an underground notebook or a diary entry is able to be used as your proof and/or evidence. The importance of a paper trail is often undervalued and overlooked when you first enter the industry. As a new engineer, all too often your legal obligations, including your duty of care are not given enough consideration. Whose job is it to inform you of what your legal obligations are and when do they end? Everyone has legal obligations at every level of the industry, from graduate to mine manager. The level of these responsibilities varies depending on the position that you hold. When you first start in the industry you need to understand what your responsibilities are and how you are expected to discharge them, whether they are memos, databases or senior sign-offs, etc. In order to fulfil your obligations you must first discharge your own obligation, which in turn discharges those of your department and ultimately those of the mine. As a graduate engineer in the mining industry what I have learnt about my own legal obligations has come directly from my own experience, which will form the basis of this paper.

Even though most major operating companies in the minerals industry have Board-level endorsed sustainability principles and objectives, design engineers typically have no mechanism that allows them to implement those objectives in their work. In addition, the existing project management systems do not readily deliver the innovative solutions needed to address key sustainability issues, such as those related to significantly reduced carbon emissions, minimal environmental impacts, and maintaining the societal ‘licence to operate’. SUSOP® (SUStainable OPerations) is an approach for the integration of sustainable development principles into the design of mineral processes, which has been developed through the Co-operative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP). Somewhat analogous to the well entrenched HAZOP (Hazard and Operability) studies, SUSOP® is a holistic, systematic and rigorous mechanism for identifying and assessing sustainability opportunities and risks at each stage of project development - from corporate planning, through design and operation, to decommissioning and rehabilitation – without compromising financial rigour. SUSOP® was developed, tested and enhanced through its application to real case studies in the minerals industry. This development path provided significant insights into the process of identifying and evaluating opportunities for improving an operation’s contribution to sustainability and its long-term business case.This paper will discuss the need for a methodical approach for integrating sustainability principles into mineral processing plant design, present the key elements of SUSOP®, and outline its development path through real case studies. In addition, the reasons why such an approach will have growing importance into the future will be raised.

Paste fill has been used successfully at Henty Gold Mine for the past five years. It has allowed 100 per cent extraction of the orebody, stabilised poor ground and enabled wide sections and offsets to be mined safely. However, there are a number of inefficiencies in the current paste fill system. These include the low output from the drum filter, the addition of aggregate to the paste to compensate and the trucking of paste from the plant to the portal. These inefficiencies have increased the operating cost of the paste fill system and caused a number of operational challenges such as blockages and increased pipe wear. These challenges have been partly overcome by taking ownership of the paste fill process, improved quality control and better communication. Henty is currently developing two new orebodies, the Mt Julia and the Darwin and has an opportunity to build an efficient paste fill operation. This is likely to be a high density paste system without aggregate, either located above the new orebodies or located at the plant and pumped to the new site.
