The development of present methods of pillar extraction has evolved from the very earliest of hand mining operations which were limited in scope by venti- lation and transport considerations. Conservation and safety considerations also have led to the current shortwall operations with conventional equipment and powered supports. The shortwall methods have had significant effects on safety, costs, con- servation, flexibility, and other aspects of pillar extraction. The present stage falls short of the ideal but is some guide to prediction in what direction may lie the ideal methods for the future.

A research and testing facility has been developed at Simtars to allow the spontaneous combustion testing of coal on a large scale. In this adiabatic reactor, the coal particle sizing is closer to that which could be found in the goaf and therefore the reaction is more likely to simulate the underground situation. This allows aspects of the spontaneous combustion process and methods for detecting a heating to be investigated which cannot be done in an operational mine. Up to 18 tonnes of run of mine or crushed coal is loaded into the reactor and allowed to self-heat while the temperature and gas profiles within the coal pile are monitored. The gases evolved from the coal are analysed using a fixed gas monitor system and gas chromatography to determine which of the common mine fire indicators and ratios can be used to predict the onset and progress of coal heatings. Benchmarking of the inherent propensity of a coal to spontaneously combust at both the large- and laboratory-scale is also possible by comparing the sample against previously tested samples. It has been found that the coal particle size affects both the time it takes for the coal to react and the location of the developing heating. The heatings generate approximately one metre from the inlet but in the crushed coal case do not progress to an advanced heating stage until the æhot spotÆ migrates towards the coal surface where there is an increased oxygen supply. Physical properties such as the compressive strength of the coal also affect the heating size and the time it takes for a heating to develop. Higher strength coals appear to oxidise more slowly and therefore take longer to self-heat as oxidation of the coal is the heat-generating step in the spontaneous combustion process. The best indicators of the state of the heating were found to be CO make and GrahamÆs ratio which are independent of air flow. Investigation of a potential spontaneous combustion should begin as soon as the CO make or GrahamÆs ratio exceed the background levels. The results from the tests undertaken on a number of Queensland and NSW coals are reported here together with the implications for the mining industry.

In 2019 the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued guidelines promoting the implementation of ultra-low emissions in the iron and steelmaking industry. These guidelines aim to drive improvements in air quality through the reduction of particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx). Secondly, it also represents an initial means to commence decarbonisation of the industry. The ultra-low emissions guidelines propose that well over 80 per cent of China’s production capacity will achieve these targets by 2025. In response, many sintering operations have implemented numerous improvements to the process that result in significant efficiency gains. Of note is the adoption of deep bed sintering where, with some modifications to equipment, the sintering bed depth is increased resulting in sizable reductions of SO2 and NOx emissions. This paper will also provide an overview of the requirements to introduce deep-bed sintering into an operation and highlight test work completed which quantifies the resultant reduction in emissions.

In September 1988 the Imperial Smelting zinc - lead blast furnace at Avonmouth England, was uprated from its then 52 week annual rated capacity of 90 000 tonnes/year of furnace zinc to 110 000 tonnes. In order to provide sufficient extra feed the sinter plant was likewise uprated in April 1989 by increasing the blowing rate of the sinter/acid plants from 100 000 to 120 000 Nm3/h, effectively a 20 per cent increase. In the 12 months after the uprate zinc production was only 85 000 tonnes. Two years after the uprate zinc production had increased to 100 000 tonnes, but it was not until January 1992 that a rolling 12-month zinc production of 110 000 tonnes was consistently achieved. This paper describes the problems encountered with the uprate and how they have been or are being overcome. It deals chronologically with events starting with the restart of the ISF at the end of 1988 and covers the following issues and their resolution: 1. Initial shortages of sinter due to an offset in uprate timing. 2. Greater difficulties in operating the larger furnace particularly on start-up, the greater tendency for iron production and serious slagging problems. 3. Coincidental timing of deleterious trends in slag chemistry. 4. Refractory problems in the furnace shaft and condenser. 5. Shortages of sinter due to commissioning problems with the wet gas and sinter tip end fans, and difficulties in obtaining sufficient sinter hardness. 6. Unrealised full benefits of the sinter-acid uprate due to a late change in design to dispense with sinter gas recirculation, but offset by successful use of oxygen. In a planned maintenance stop in September 1992 further improvements to the furnace design were carried out to resolve the refractory problems, and with improvements to the sinter plant the furnace zinc output capacity is planned to rise to a rate of 120 000 tonnes/year within two years.

In the flotation of fine particles, problems arise which do not occur with coarse-ground pulps. For example, the presence of colloidal or near-colloid- al gangue particles gives rise to ex- cessive entrainment in the froth, with reduced grade as a consequence. If the values themselves are finely dissemi- nated, the recovery usually decreases as the particles diminish in size, so a low recovery is combined with poor grade. Sutherland and Wark (1955) referred to the complications arising from the presence of fines, indicating (p.382) that fine grinding "introduces diffi- culties that have not yet been satis- factorily overcome". At the time of writing, very little work has been done on fines flotation specifically, yet the groundwork has been well laid. The availability of better scientific instruments, together with the general advance of understanding in a wide variety of relevant research fields, has taken us a long way toward finding the reasons behind the problems as- sociated with fines, and also toward finding practical solutions. It would be useful to define what is meant by "fine" particles before going further. To some extent, the definition is somewhat elastic as far as flotation is concerned, because the density of the particles has a bearing on whether or not they act as fines. But in general we are dealing with particles less than about 20 pm in Diameter.

Two genetic types of base metal deposits occur in the Wainivesi area of central eastern Viti Levu. The Wainivesi deposit is now considered to be a stratiform volcanogenic type, and the Wailotu and Wainiviti deposits are described as contact metasomatic with some hydrothermal manifestations. The Wainivesi mineralization is correlated with the Tertiary "e" stage, i.e. uppermost Oligocene-Iowermost Miocene. Tertiary "e" stage rocks in Fiji are therefore potential ore producers of stratiform volcanogenic type. On the basis of plate tectonics with Fiji part of the New Hebrides Arc prior to rifting apart in the late Miocene, stratiform volcanogenic deposits of the Wainivesi type may also occur in rocks of comparable type and age in the New Hebrides.

The Mt Todd Gold Project is located 42 km northwest of the township of Katherine within the Northern Territory of Australia. It is situated in the southeastern portion of the Pine Creek Geosyncline. The Batman gold deposit, the largest of several deposits at Mt Todd, hosts an identified mineral resource of 92.9 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.4 grams/tonne (g/t) as at 31 December 1993. Host rocks at Batman are assigned to the Early Proterozoic Burrell Creek Formation, comprising greywacke and siltstone interbedded with shale. Gold mineralisation is associated with a very broad zone of sheeted and stockwork quartz-sulphide veins that occupy a corridor of intense brittle fracture and faulting. A conceptual model of formation involves the dilation of joints and micro-faults within overlying sediments during sinistral movement along a basement shear zone. Synchronous granite intrusion generated convective circulation of crustal fluids through the sedimentary pile resulting in the formation of auriferous quartz veins within favourable structures. The Batman zone of mineralisation is not directly related to fold structures which typify several other major gold deposits within the Pine Creek Geosyncline.

Conventional treatment of oxide and oxidised sulphide minerals by flotation involves the use of sodium sulphide for sulphidisation. Sodium sulphide is generally applied in a "slug" dosing fashion with manual regulation. However, it is recognised that "over addition" or "under addition" of sulphidising reagent can result in poor flotation recoveries. Thus, control of sodium sulphide additions is an important aspect of a sulphidisation circuit, both commercially and metallurgically. In any plant where the flotation feed is "constant" it is possible to operate at a constant rate of addition of sodium sulphide. In actual plant practice, however, it is difficult to maintain a truly constant feed for any reasonable duration because this implies not only a constant feed-rate, but also constant mineral composition and particle size range. These factors can vary significantly and ideally require corresponding variations in the additions of sodium sulphide to maintain optimum recoveries. To cope with variations in the feed, it is essential to have automatic rather than manual regulation of the sulphide reagent addition. The CPS process achieves this control by utilising a sulphide ion-selective electrode as a control instrument in sulphidisation. The CPS process which uses a selective electrode, enables the sulphide ion concentration in the flotation pulp to be monitored and controlled continuously throughout the stage of sulphidisation.

A major breakthrough in extending the life of the wear material of high pressure roll crushers when treating moist, highly abrasive material has removed the last impediment to the widespread acceptance of high pressure comminution in the minerals industry. The system is very energy efficient. It has been demonstrated that in the cement industry energy savings of up to 50 per cent have been achieved compared to conventional hall milling. Besides being energy efficient, the process provides some remarkable and useful effects; ò better liberation of mineral constituents (as proven for diamond liberation). ò preferential comminution where induced micro fissures follow grain boundaries. ò higher reactivity of the product due to micro fissures. All these points will be described here together with a review of current flowsheet design and incentives for the use of this method of Comminution.

In the mining business the cost of grinding media represents up to 40 per cent of the total milling cost and therefore grinding media optimisation has a direct impact on the concentratorsÆ bottom line. In the process of optimising grinding media alloys, Magotteaux developed its own methodology which consists of a series of analyses, tests, calculations and evaluations and assist the concentrator in optimising their processes.This paper presents the Prominent Hill case study where this methodology has been applied on both the secondary ball mill and regrind IsaMill«.The analysis of the wear conditions in the secondary ball mill allows Magotteaux to select a series of grinding media alloys to be tested to reduce grinding media consumption. By marking these different grinding media types with a unique drilling pattern, one can quantify the relative wear performance and cost effectiveness of each grinding media type within the same milling environment. After selecting the most economical grinding media composition a full scale industrial trial, involving topping up the selected grinding media is carried out and the media wear performance closely monitored and analysed.For stirred grinding mills, suppliers propose different grinding media, mainly ceramic beads, with specific properties and cost. Therefore the concentratorsÆ choice is a compromise between grinding efficiency, wear resistance and cost. The selection of the correct grinding media for stirred milling and the assessment procedure will be presented in this paper. The exposed high face of Kerr's Quarry has dominated the township of Ferntree Gully for half a century. The near perpendicular face of bare dacite rock is a crumbling scar in an area of significant natural beauty. Apart from being unsightly, the face is a hazard for any person who approaches too close to its base or to the top edge. The height and the precipitous nature of this man made wall of rock is hazardous indeed. (fig. 1) The rock face is on the municipal boundary between the Shire of Sherbrooke and the City of Knox. This boundary was drawn when partition of the Shire of Ferntree Gully took place. There are many advantages in benching back the wall of the quarry but to do so the operation, located in Knox would need to extend into Sherbrooke. There are planning difficulties involved in such a manoeuvre, but during 1972, at a meeting of Cabinet Ministers, it was agreed that the matter be resolved.

Kalgoorlie Consolidation Gold Mines (KCGM) operates the Kalgoorlie Super Pit open cut, Mt Charlotte underground mine, Fimiston process plant and Gidji Roaster facility for joint venture partners Newmont Mining Corporation and Barrick Gold. In 2004, the Fimiston plant was upgraded by the addition of gravity concentration to the Fimiston and Mt Charlotte grinding circuits, including the installation of a central intensive cyanidation reactor to process the gravity concentrates. The gravity project was justified after detailed analysis demonstrating an expected increase in overall gold recovery of approximately one per cent, in addition to reduced elution costs and reduced gold inventory in flotation concentrate stockpiles. The gravity circuits were commissioned in August 2004, and have since consistently recovered 10 to 20 per cent of the gold present in the KCGM ore, delivering a reduction in coarse gold losses equivalent to 0.45 per cent additional metal recovery and contributing to improved metal accountability.CITATION:Giblett, A, Hillier, D, Parker, K and Ramsell, V, 2012. IGO Ltd’s (IGO’s) Nova Operation (Nova), which is 160 km east-north-east of the town of Norseman in Western Australia (WA), mines and processes nickel-copper-cobalt (Ni-Cu-Co) sulfide ore from the magmatic Nova-Bollinger Deposit (Nova-Bollinger), which is hosted by the Mesoproterozoic age high-grade metamorphic rocks of the Albany Fraser Orogen. Over its 56-month life-of-mine (LOM) operations to 31 December 2020, Nova has processed 5.63 Mt of ore grading 2.04 per cent Ni, 0.86 per cent Cu and 0.07 per cent Co from its underground mine. At the end of 2020, both the Nova-Bollinger JORC Code reportable Mineral Resource estimate (MRE) and Ore Reserve estimate (ORE) were >90 per cent classified in the highest JORC Code confidence categories of Measured Mineral Resource and Proved Ore Reserve respectively. The high JORC Code classification confidences assigned to the Nova-Bollinger MRE and ORE results from the 386 km of surface and underground diamond drill testing of the deposit to a nominal 12.5 by 12.5 m pierce point spacing in mineralisation. The close spaced high-quality drilling and bulk mining method employed at Nova has effectively removed the need for any grade control modelling outside of the MRE process. Importantly, having only the one fully drilled out deposit being mined and only the one process plant, Nova’s reconciliation process is in the fortunate situation of not being confounded by issues such as external ore sources and constant updates as new grade control information becomes available. IGO’s Nova reconciliation processes are focused on reconciliation ratios that quantify operational period differences between the MRE and ORE head grade and tonnage forecasts and the process plant head actuals. These metrics have been used to identify key reconciliation issues and have initiated several studies into the causes for specific reconciliation results, which are discussed in the paper. In late 2020, a period of sustained poor reconciliation results led to the recognition that increasing the understanding of risk between the MRE and ORE should be investigated. To assist with modelling stope level risk within the mine plan and subsequent reconciliation, an attempt was made to develop a formula to quantify ‘stope risk’ from MRE metrics such as sample spacing, kriging efficiency and so on

Backfill is usually considered a necessary evil that contributes little to the principal objective of the operation, ore production. Consequently, it is relegated to an auxiliary role in the operation with minimal equipment and resource allocation in planning and is only superficially considered during feasibility studies. In many mines, the inadequacy of the design and operation of the backfill system ultimately leads to frequent delays, excessive costs and, in the worst cases, major instabilities which result in reduced ore production and lost or unrecoverable ore reserves. The primary objective of backfill is to prevent the progressive deterioration of mined out excavations. With the exception of narrow vein operations, it is too weak to alter the mining induced stress regime and control stress concentrations caused by stope extractions. However, the direct benefits of backfill include the possibility to consider a wider range of mining methods, recovery of 100 per cent of the planned resource and the selection of a stoping sequence that minimises the regional stability problems that cause production shortfalls in the later years of mine production. Indirectly, backfill is a practical means of solving other issues, such as waste disposal, that impact the viability of mining. In Australia, the geotechnical conditions of many mines are becoming more difficult and increased attention to the importance of backfill is warranted. This paper describes realistic aspects of backfilling and the positive impacts a well co-ordinated fill system can have on mining activities as a whole. Examples are presented where an integrated approach to backfill systems have offered significant benefits to the operation.

Opportunities to improve mill operations are often cited by mining companies and recognised in many concentrators spread throughout the world but are not always followed through. Copper-molybdenum concentrator operations are challenged by a continuously increasing list of detrimental factors. They include deteriorating ore characteristics and poor mineralogical information on deeper ores, water quality and availability, steel wear and increasing power costs. Rapidly declining productivity, sustainability and environmental factors, new taxes, mining industry global skill set shortages, to name but a few, must also be considered. The days of maximising value by just increasing production or simple cost cutting are fading and will not be sufficient for the future of more complex mineral processing operations and larger plants. As a result, FLSmidth’s Global Process Technology Group has launched a plant and process optimisation program based on mineralogical and metallurgical surveys.Copper-molybdenum concentrators of the future need a paradigm shift. Modelling and simulation tools alone are not the answer to complex mineralogical associations and larger scale equipment and operations. Detailed area by area review aimed at identifying process constraints in terms of equipment and operating practice in conjunction with robust diagnostic work, ie mineralogical and metallurgical characterisation, are mandatory for process optimisation. The navigational beacon, for all operations who want to remain competitive, will be ‘process efficiency’. Since the use of automated mineral analysers has become more readily available and reliable, mineralogical-metallurgical plant surveys have proven themselves as the most efficient tool for optimising plant performance.The following paper will illustrate how operations can move toward eliminating under-performing flow sheets, fixing run-away flotation conditions, maximising individual process equipment performance, preventing shortcuts in Bond work index testing which may cause the failure of comminution models and minimising costly and time-consuming ‘debottlenecking’. As previous plant surveys have shown, the net project cash flow can be increased by 50 to 200 per cent if a combination of robust ore characterisation and plant process mineralogy is performed. The combined plant survey approach has been demonstrated successfully in a multitude of operations. Following a pre-feasibility study, Mount Isa Mines commenced a feasibility study on the deposit of the George Fisher Mine in May 1997. Board approval was granted in May 1998 to construct a 2.5 million tonne per annum mine and to upgrade existing concentrator and smelter facilities. The world-class George Fisher zinc-lead-silver deposit is located approximately 22 kilometres north of the city of Mount Isa, in north-west Queensland and is 2.6 kilometres north of the existing Hilton Mine. It will be a large-scale underground mine, sustaining a profitable zinc-lead-silver business in Mount Isa for at least ten years. This paper will outline the details of the mine that was developed during the feasibility and design phase. It will include a description of the mining methods, ventilation, fill, ore handling, services and infrastructure. The utilisation of existing assets and the development of innovative ideas were essential to the successful economic development of the George Fisher Mine.

Occupational health and safety is essential in modern mining workplaces and in China it is often not given enough emphasis due to a lack of knowledge and/or appreciation. Although many health and safety regulations have been passed over the years, serious and relevant laws and regulations on mine health and safety are of recent history (since 2002), the level of stringent enforcement is still inconsistent and accurate field data are scant and not readily available. As of year-end 2006 there were 676 562 recorded cases of occupational diseases in China, of which 616 442 or 91 per cent were miners’ pneumoconiosis. Of these, 146 195 (23 per cent) have died, and an average of 10 000 new cases were added every year between 1991 and 2006. Another report shows that 93.18 per cent of miners have never had a contract with their companies, which means their cases were not even part of China’s official statistics. This study attempts to examine the prevalence of occupational diseases in the Chinese mining industry during 2000–2013, compiled from government annual reports and academic studies. The research will review the correlational analysis among occupational diseases, ventilation practices, protection devices and legislation.CITATION:Cao, Y and Tien, J C, 2015. The rapid industrialisation of the world was driven by an improved ability to utilise chemical energy. Unfortunately harnessing explosive energy did not come cheaply given the hundreds of lost lives. However, the modem explosives industry has made significant technological achievements, for explosives are now considered to be both safe and extremely effective. Upon closer inspection, it would appear the key to this achievement has been the development of initiation systems. While the focus may have been originally on safety, modem developments have concentrated upon harnessing the benefits of initiation control. Before attempting to gaze into the future, it is worth reviewing some of the significant advances that have occurred.

Upstream Classifier are well-known in the iron ore industry for at least 15 years. At present, more than 60 units are in operation in Western Australia. The advantage of this technology is their capability to produce three products with one equipment – iron ore concentrate, iron ore middlings for further processing and slimes (tailings). The principal of this beneficiation process – upstream classification and upstream separation – will always remain. However, the optimisation of the classification and separation efficiency of the equipment itself is a continuous process driven by enhanced automation and instrumentation, design changes and the use of upstream and downstream information and requirements. Besides efficiency, the safety, maintenance and replacement conditions are very important subjects for the operation of an iron ore mine. The aim of this paper is to present a new allflux® upstream classifier design, which has been developed together with several iron ore producer from Western Australia. The new design benefits from its sustainability approach by dividing the entire equipment into small reusable parts. As a result, maintenance is minor, replacement much faster, lifetime much longer and costs much lower. Furthermore, it demonstrates new features to prevent hazardous working conditions such as confined space as well as new fixing devices to speed up the replacement of certain items and parts.
