Semi-arid regions suffer from two afflictions; evaporation may exceed precipitation by multiples of two or more and variations in precipitation can be both extreme and difficult to predict. Many Australian mines are situated in semi-arid areas where communities are reliant upon locally sourced water or special purpose infrastructure is built as part of the mine construction. As the question of climate change looms, issues related to future water supply and sustainable water management become increasingly important. Across Australia several mining operations co-exist in a single surface water and/or groundwater catchment area. The management of water on a mine by mine or a community by community basis is illogical and must be reconsidered based on a single water catchment and a whole-of-community basis. Mine water should be considered on a full life cycle basis where the quality is assessed for specific mine site applications. This paper addresses technical challenges that include surface water and groundwater supply in semi-arid regions, operational water in the mining industry, beneficial uses of water, water economics and demand management. In much the same way as emissions trading evolved into a multi-stakeholder forum, mining regions offer scope for innovative thinking in water supply and reuse. In addition, this paper considers a number of initiatives taken by Australian mining companies that are entering a prefeasibility stage and contrasts these initiatives against the established success within a South African mining region. The challenges and potential solutions to this initiative are presented for future consideration.

Metallurgists operating Knelson Concentrators (KC) often rely on manufacturerÆs recommendations for selecting operating parameters, such as fluidising water flow rate and cycle time. Recent studies have shown that these parameters are not only dependent on the machine parameters but also on the feed characteristics, such as size distribution of the gold and gangue particles and the composition of its constituent minerals. It is known that a particle entering a KC initially traverses a circular path within the bowl. For a particle to maintain a given orbit, the required centripetal force must be supplied by external means. It has been argued that this centripetal force, which is dependent on the mass of the particle, its radial position and the rotational speed of the bowl, is provided by the fluid drag force created by inwardly moving fluidising water and the BagnoldÆs force created by the particle/particle collisions. Depending on the fluidising water flow rate, one of two situations can occur where the porosity of the bed increases or decreases, which influences the amount of material retained within the bowl. The amount of material of a given size and density retained in the bowl is thus dependent on the extent of the centripetal force provided. Based on the above concept, a criterion that can be used to predict the amount of material recovered in the bowl has been derived and validated by experimental data. It may also be construed that this criterion demarcates the transition of the bed from a packed-bed state to a fluidised state. By identifying the transition values for the different constituent mineral particles in the feed, it is possible to estimate the optimal fluidising water flow rate that would maximise gold recovery while minimising gangue recovery. In addition, the kinetics of gangue displacement by incoming heavy mineral particles were also studied using synthetic mineral mixtures. The experimental data suggests that this process follows first order kinetics and that the build-up of heavy mineral reaches a maximum. A model has been proposed to predict the optimal batch cycle time for a KC in terms of the feed characteristics and machine operating parameters.

In 1975 the Commonwealth Government established import parity pricing for all liquid hydrocarbons discovered after the 16th September, 1975. These discoveries were termed "new oil" to differentiate them from existing discoveries and production. Overnight the price of the product being sought trebled, resulting in greatly enhanced economics by increasing the potential returns on existing prospects and by making smaller plays economically viable. After 18 years of drilling, the offshore Gippsland Basin has attained a moderate level of exploration for a basin of its size. Fifty seven prospects have been drilled within the basin but only a few of these were drilled along the southern and northern margins, while the deep water areas along the eastern margin have remained virtually undrilled following the Hapuku-1 oil discovery. The major hydrocarbon accumulations within the basin are trapped beneath the Latrobe Unconformity surface and exploration has largely concentrated on this single play in areas immediately adjacent to the major producing fields.

An innovative separator known as the HydroFloat cell has been developed specifically for the upgrading of coarse particles that are difficult to recover using conventional flotation cells. The novel characteristic of this separator is the formation of a hindered teeter-bed of fluidised solids into which small air bubbles are injected. The air bubbles selectively attach to hydrophobic particles and form particle/bubble agglomerates that segregate atop the teeter-bed due to their lower apparent specific gravity. The low-density agglomerates are eventually carried into the product overflow launder by the rising current of teeter water. Hydrophilic particles remain in the teeter-bed and are discharged to underflow as a high solids content tailing. Benefits of this hybrid flotation-density separator include enhanced bubble-particle contacting, increased particle residence time, and very low air demand. Test data indicate that significant improvements in the recovery of coarse particles can be achieved using this innovative technology. This article describes the theoretical basis for the development of the HydroFloat cell and provides an overview of recent pilot-scale tests conducted for the phosphate industry.

This paper examines the interrelationship of conducting full risk assessments in the context of the coal mining industry and under the framework of the Health's Safety in Employment Act 1992. In the context of Occupational Health's Safety, Risk Management is a holistic management process that can be used by individuals working in all organisations and from all industries. The Australian New Zealand Standard 4360: 2004 defines a Risk as being; The chance of something happening that will have an impact on objectives. This definition is followed by several notes that include: a risk is often specified in terms of an event or circumstance and the consequences that may flow from it, risk is measured in terms of a combination of the consequences of an event and their likelihood, and risk may have a positive or negative impact. For the purposes of this paper, the above definition will be adopted. This paper examines the newly expanded approach of the fully documented risk management process in the New Zealand coal mining industry. This is done in the context of the coal mining regulations but more importantly by using the framework of the Health & Safety in Employment Act 1992. This legislation under Section 6 requires all employers to, Take all Practicable Steps to prevent harm coming to employees while at work and to others who might be at or in the vicinity of a workplace. When the term 'all practicable steps' is studied, one can clearly see that such steps should be the same steps taken that a prudent and reasonable person would have taken given the same type of circumstance. Due to the fact that in New Zealand parliament made statutes is administered by a Government Department, means that their breaches will be heard before a judge in the District Court. Under the Westminster System of Justice, a basic dictum of that court in matters relating the occupational health and safety is that a breach needs to be satisfied to a specific standard. That standard is, 'Beyond a reasonable Doubt'. One of the primary benefits of adopting a proactive approach to risk management is that if the industry were to adopt similar approaches, then this mythology could be seen as an industry standard. As such, the approach carries the same status in a court of law, as that of an Approved Code of Practice.

The sinking of the new No. 3 Shaft being mainly concerned with providing for the continuation of mining operations north of the existing workings, requirements for the shaft and haulage equipment were assessed, having in mind the anticipated needs of the Company in future years, the .available knowledge and probable future trends of the orebody, and also that the shaft would be required to act as a downcast airway for the ventilation system associated with the northern underground workings.

A tunnel operations analyser is a new high technol- ogy instrument for use in underground work. By remotely sensing the acoustic emissions from operating machines and processes in a tunnel or shaft and by applying sophis- ticated computer processing to them individual process cycles and other detailed information about the operating processes can be collected. Detailed analyses and dissec- tions of the work in progress can be made and a variety of action oriented management reports produced. The pro- cess is fully automatic. Results of applying this device to two full scale tunnel projects are presented. The hardware and software that comprise the instrument are discussed in detail. Processes by which this device can be used to sub- stantially reduce tunnel costs are presented. It is concluded that this type of technology has great potential.

Geometallurgical parameters are descriptions of the mineralogy and microstructure of the ore determining its mineralogical and microstructural characteristics. From a conditional geostatistical simulation of such properties, a processing model can compute recovery, equipment usage, processing costs, and thus the monetary value for mining and processing a block with certain processing parameters. The output can be used for optimising mining sequences or finding optimal processing parameters by solving the corresponding stochastic optimisation problem.The approach requires two properties of the simulation not provided by established geostatistical techniques:Many relevant geometallurgical parameters are from non-Euclidean statistical scales such as (mineral) compositions, (grain size) distribution, (grain) geometry, and (stratigraphic type) categorical, which might produce nonsensical values (for example, negative proportions, negative facies probablities, planar grains) when simulated with standard geostatistical techniques.Due to the nonlinearity of processing, the entire conditional distribution of the geometallurgical parameters is relevant, not only its mean and variance. The geostatistical simulation needs to reproduce the joint conditional distributions of all the geometallurgical parameters.The multipoint conditional geostatistical simulation technique discussed here allows for jointly simulating dependent spatial variables from various sample spaces. The technique combines an infill simulation, similar to the one used in multipoint geostatistics, with a new form of distributional regression to estimate conditional distributions of arbitrary scales from different information sources, including training images, training models and observed data. The distributional regression is based on a generalisation of logistic regression and is related to both Bayesian Maximum Entropy geostatistics and high order cumulants.The method ensures that simulated data reside in the set of possible values and honour the characteristics of the joint distribution to be reproduced. Hillgrove Resources (HGO) commenced open pit mining in 2011 and from 2011 to 2016 the geology team experienced a consistent negative reconciliation between grade control estimated copper (Cu) grade and the mill received grade. For the first four years, despite trialling various grade control strategies, the monthly variance between geology and mill copper grades fluctuated between -5 per cent to -17 per cent Cu metal depending on the style of mineralisation.In 2015, HGO embarked on various measures which resulted in changes to grade control practices under the advice of consultants. These changes to grade control sampling, estimation and block out practices resulted in six to seven months of consistently poor Mine to Mill reconciliations from -25 per cent to -28 per cent Cu.In an effort to mitigate these poor reconciliations the geology team reintroduced the preconsultant block out and geology driven grade control methods. Blockout reconciliations from this point emulated those seen originally from -8 per cent to -12 per cent (Cu per cent). Early in 2016 the geology team introduced conditional simulation for grade control as opposed to ordinary kriging to better characterise the grade distribution, introduced separate estimation parameters appropriate for every zone of mineralisation, implemented a maximum profit function to optimise the selection of ore and waste, and retained the geology driven block out processes. Since March 2016 the mine has experienced consecutive months of positive Mine to Mill reconciliations, the first seen in six years. Year to date the expected copper metal is within 1 per cent of mill reconciled copper metal.This paper will compare the various sampling methods, estimation algorithms and block out procedures from the past six years to arrive at a robust open pit operating procedure applicable for mineralisation with high short scale variability.CITATION:Reid, M and Arbon, H, 2017. The current suite of bulk mining explosives has been available to the industry for over 20 years. The flexibility and performance of ammonium nitrate based emulsion blend explosives were accepted by the mining industry in the early 1980s. These water resistant explosives rapidly displaced the water gels and slurries developed during the previous two decades. However, since the 1980s there has been no equivalent step change to the basic formulation or application of bulk explosives, although there has been a continuous process of refinement with respect to stability, handling characteristics and most significantly, cost. In the 1980s explosives supply contracts were awarded based on technical evaluations, usually accompanied by field trials. Technical personnel from both mining companies and explosives suppliers dominated the negotiations and there was a strong focus on explosive energy and blasting requirements. Today, explosives from alternative suppliers are difficult to differentiate on the basis of energy so the focus has shifted to aspects of service and price û bulk mining explosives are now largely treated as a commodity and the negotiations are dominated by commercial personnel. Commercial pressures from large mining companies have seen a substantial reduction in the real price of explosives. However, this has come at a cost. In order to reduce manufacturing costs, emulsion formulations have changed. In general they are not only cheaper, but also less energetic. Powder factors have had to increase to achieve the same blasting results, especially in hard ground. It is debatable whether the mining companies have achieved all of the economies they were seeking. This paper discusses these issues and argues that the mining industry would benefit from taking a more technically driven approach to meeting their blasting requirements. Recent trends towards more open contracts between the mining companies and their suppliers can be extended to explosives. To achieve this, mining companies will need to acquire sufficient technical knowledge to take a more pro-active approach to specify the characteristics of the explosives required to maximise the economic performance of their operations.

As a result of cheap Maui gas and plentiful hydro-electricity, over the past few decades New Zealand has enjoyed some of the cheapest energy of any OECD country. The situation is changing; at best we are facing some radical changes in energy use, at worst we are facing a crisis resulting from the following:   Cause 1: Maui gas will be exhausted by 2012. Distorted pricing and supply contracts; resulted in Huntly Power Station, a coal mine mouth generator running on 70 per cent Maui gas until very recently!   Cause 2: Investment in new generating capacity (and transmission) is woefully inadequate; as a result hydro lake levels are being continually pushed to the limits.   Cause 3: Distorted thinking is everywhere, for example; æWe will find more cheap gasÆ. æGas is clean û coal is dirtyÆ. Hot air  û ægreen alternatives such as wind generation will save usÆ. æNo NuclearÆ. The outcomes of the distorted thinking will be price increases, then shortages (there is nothing like "black-outs" to focus national thinking) and finally recession.   But what can NZ do? - Mine Coal. Coal jump-started the industrial revolution, it can provide the transition to post-gas and oil. NZ has the second highest reserves of coal per capita in the world, yet we use less that any other country with significant coal reserves. Our exports of our best coal have increased threefold, yet out own consumption has remained static at about 1-1.5 Mtpa for the last 30 years. Our coal is NZ owned and inexpensive relative to other energy sources, even allowing for infrastructure and environmental costs.   What can we do? We as mining professionals can promote informed responsible development and investment in the country's mining and energy business. We can galvanise public opinion on issues such as æunbundlingÆ our entire energy chain from mine-to generator-through transmission, even if the nuclear issue has to wait! With oil above US$70/bbl substitution is feasible. For individuals, there is always solar!

Firedamp drainage has become an essential part of many mine environmental systems, and new applications are arising. Installations are evolving further to satisfy ever changing basic requirements, standards, and iniilny needs. In this paper, water seal, vacuum based installations are considered, as well as moni- toring, protective and control systems which have been developed for continuous, manless, and trouble free operation. Some factors affecting plant capacity and extractor per- formance are identified and assessed. INTRODUCTION Firedamp drainage applications are incr- easing world wide as mining engineers strive for improved safety and security, and further concentration of coal output. Fewer and fewer mines are able nowadays to satisfy coal prod- uction and firedamp control requirements solely by air dilution or by air dilution and underground firedamp extraction plants. As a result, dependence on surface extraction plants is increasing. This paper deals with som requirements and applications of such installations. I. The Ravensworth-Liddell area is part of the Muswellbrook- Singleton Coal District of the Northern Coalfield. It lies in the Parishes of Liddell, Ravensworth, Vane and Howick, in the County of Durham, midway between Singleton and Muswellbrook, and is traversed by the Great Northern Railway, and the New England Highway.Ravensworth and Liddell railway stations are 57 miles arid 61 miles, respectively, north from Newcastle (Fig. 1).The area has been the centre of an intensive search for open cut coal during the past few years. More than 1,200 bores, of which about 10% were cored diamond drill holes, were drilled to depths of about 200ft. Portions with thicker cover have been explored by 10 diamond drill holes to depths of over 400ft. but core recovery from these deeper holes was poor, and the lack of detail in the recorded logs limits geological interpretation. The drilling has proved about 34,000,000 tons of open cut coal, and about 246,000,000 tons under deeper cover.GEOLOGYThe Ravensworth-Liddell area lies on the eastern flank and southern extremity of the Muswellbrook Dome, extending from Hebden in the north, to Jerry's Plains in the south, and the rocks under consideration belong to the Tomago Stage of the Upper Coal Measures. On the north they are truncated by the Hebden Thrust fault, which has a throw of about 4,500ft. (Raggatt, 1929). The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) is a professional society for all those associated with the activities of the mineral industry. Differences of opinion exist within the membership of the AusIMM on the role it should play in the future as a professional society in a changing industry and world environment. This same dilemma is concerning other professional societies of which the author is a member. Some of the activities and priorities of the AusIMM are reviewed in order to clarify a frequently expressed opinion that it identifies with and supports industry at the expense of representing the interests of its individual members. By definition and by action this is certainly not the case and it is concluded that all activities whether seen to be industry or member orientated serve to benefit both. The AusIMM plays a most important role in integrating and promoting the interests of all sections of the mineral industry whether corporate or individual and the Presidential activities in education this year provide an excellent example of this.

The massive 1100 Orebody in Mount IsaÆs X41 Copper Mine has been extracted over the last 40 years form north to south utilising sublevel open stoping methods.De velopment has continually stepped ahead of production to provide access to new primary stoping blocks. The remaining secondary pillars contain stopes with one, two or three fill mass exposures and were constrained by access requirements and stope extraction turnaround time.The remaining southern mining areas consist of large 40 m wide by 300 to 400 m long east-west transverse pillars that have been left to provide access for ventilation and service requirements. Three large transverse cross-cuts or transverse pillars û 4180 x/c, 4010 x/c and the Panel pillar now remain. The 4180 x/c was the last major transverse pillar to be successfully broken.This transverse pillar is being extracted in a retreating sequence, creating 3SLOS stopes due to the surrounding backfilled stopes.In recent years the extraction of the first, and most critical, stopes in the transverse pillars have resulted in large changes to the induced stress field. This paper describes the extraction of the 1.1 million tonne stope P418 in the 4180 x/c pillar.T echnical challenges that were faced and how they were overcome to allow for the successful extraction of the stope are described.Critical to the success of the P418 stope extraction were the rehabilitation methodology used; extraction strategy modifications to address deteriorating ground; mass firings with multiple directional changes; managing the exposure of backfill of variable strengths; and geotechnical monitoring prior to, during and after extraction.

Grade Engineering®, integrated across the mine value chain, has a pivotal role to play in achieving step change reductions in energy and water usage in mine operations. High levels of gangue rejection in the mine can significantly improve mineral head grades and overall productivity. A highly successful example is described at the Minera San Cristóbal (MSC) operation. The nature of the mineralisation in their “intrusive” ore domains in particular has facilitated high rejection rates (75 % of the mass), with significant upgrading of metal to the “accepts” streams (equating to a 2.6 times upgrade in the intrinsic Nett Smelter Return). Results from a series of production trials have confirmed these strong upgrades, resulting in the transformation of mineralised “marginal wastes” to high grade ore feedstocks. If new approaches to more energy and water efficient comminution and separation technologies can also realise gangue rejection at finer sizes in the concentrator, then preconcentration strategies across the value chain also offer the promise of no wet tailings treatment facilities and greatly reduced volumes of waste streams. This “No Tails” strategy is discussed, along with the integrated technologies needed to realise its effect. The work suggests a pathway and insights of a sustainable future for the Minerals Industry, unconstrained by Energy and Water, along with no requirement to produce problematic disposal streams. This strategy has the potential to significantly reposition the social, environmental, financial, and regulatory context of existing and new mining opportunities.

Factual data about the sedimentation in the Newcastle Coal. Measures are presented. Data concerning the total coal measure sequence (isopachs, sand /shale ratio and total coal thickness variation), data about three coal seams (Borehole, Dudley and Victoria Tunnel) and data about interseam con- glomerate units are discussed. From this data conclusions are drawn about the coal measure environment. The western edge of the coal basin, the Lochinvar Dome, although a high feature was apparently stable during coal measure time. Despite its height it apparently supplied little sediment to the basin. The northern and north-eastern edge, which was unstable, suppl- ied most of the coarse detritus including the conglomerates to the basin. The conglomerates show patterns of fluvial origin but after a period of "normal" variations in pattern they become restricted to two parallel zones evidently tectonically controlled. Deposition of conglomerates is episodic and separated by periods of coal formation when deformation was apparently slight. Formation of each of the three seams considered followed a rather similar pattern - each shows development of thick coal around the basin edge and poor thin coal in the "axial" region of the present synclinal structure. Evidence of in-situ formation of some areas of the seams is discussed and periodic deformation of the basin during coal measure time is postulated.

The Henty Gold Mine, located in Western lasiuania use, uuiusatise solutions to effectively manage a mining operation in an environmentally sensitive setting and has been presented with several environmental awards. Fill is required as part of the mining method to provide passive ground support, minimise rock exposure and ensure maximum recovery of the small but high-grade orebody. The use of the whole portion of leach residue in the backfill reduces the surface tailing disposal requirements. Therefore, High Density Paste Fill (HDPF) has been selected as the most appropriate fill method to meet these objectives. Additional benefits include the minimisation of excess water from fill and the subsequent need for the collection and treatment of water and slimes. There are minimal equipment requirements during placement, thereby optimising mine resources for production. The initial paste fill design was based on the Bad Grund and Ranunelsberg Mines paste fill systems of Preussag in Germany and comprised pumping filtered tailings paste some 1.2 kin uphill from the mill to the mine portal, where cement was to be added before being distributed underground. The system was designed following initial testwork that was undertaken on a bulk sample of ore mined from the scar surface Sill Zone. Subsequently, during the mining of the Zone 96 orehody, it was found that there were significant mineralogical variations in the composition of the ore mined. Following processing, the resultant Icach residue caused significant changes in the paste rheology and therefore the pump and flow characteristics. An alternative solution was implemented that involved the use of agitator trucks to transport the cemented paste to the portal. This required modifications to the fill preparation system and also the underground distribution system. Laboratory strength tests of the HDPF using actual gold plant leach residue showed low early strengths were attained with HDPF containing only filtered leach residue. Therefore, high binder addition rates or an increase in the fill cycle time would be required to allow the fill to gain sufficient strength. A considerable amount of potentially acid generating waste rock also requires underground disposal. By blending the waste rock with the HDPF, the strengths were improved and the required cement addition rate reduced by about one-half. The potentially acid funning waste rock is encapsulated in the highly alkaline cemented paste, minimising the potential for acid generation.

Over a century ago the first ship designed solely for carrying a bulk cargo was launched. This vessel, the "John Bowes", with a deadweight of 660 tonnes was a single decked ship with machinery and accommodation aft. As such she was undoubtedly the fore- runner of the bulk carrier of today only some two hundred and fifty times smaller. Whilst the "John Bowes" pioneered the present accepted mode of transporting the bulk com- modities of the world, it is unlikely that her cargo was either loaded or discharged as quickly as that of a 150, 000 tonner of today. Two decades ago the bulk carrier was beginning to feature in the bulk handling ports of the world. Cargoes of iron ore previously carried in the 'tween deck vessels of the Empire type and Second World War Liberty ships began to be poured into the unrestricted open holds of bulk or ore carriers. The size of vessels catering for this relatively new innovation has rapidly grown to pass the 150, 000 deadweight tonne mark, but only in the last few years. The growth from now into the future is not simply one of ship size evolution. Neither is it a function of the depth of water available at ports. It is in fact a function of a number of features such as ports, loading and unloading facilities, ship trading characteristics, length of voyage and total economies of the transport task from supplier to destination.
