In the search for significant new economic base-metal resources within Australia during the early 1970s BHP's Exploration Department had observed that the majority of lead and zinc con- centrate production in Europe and the USA came from carbonate- hosted Mississippi-Valley-type (MVT) zinc-lead deposits, but Aus- tralia had no history of production from this class of deposit despite several very favourable geological environments, par- ticularly in the large Palaeozoic sedimentary basins. An exploration-research team was established in 1975 and the Lennard Shelf region, near Fitzroy Crossing, was selected as a most promising geological environment. Previous exploration for this class of deposit by other companies in Australia had largely used conventional exploration philosophies (geological mapping, geophysics and geochemistry to identify specific drill targets) but BHP sought specialist advice from a North American expert and adopted a grid-drilling philosophy, which involved wide spaced relatively deep diamond drill holes on a regular grid pattern, and statistical evaluation of the results. This technique resulted in the discovery of the Blendevale Deposit in 1978 in an area which had previously been explored by other companies using conventional methodologies. The deposit was delineated and a pre-feasibility study carried out in 1985 indicated that the resource of 20 Mt @ 8.3% Zn, 2.5% Pb was a marginal proposition.

The purpose of the paper is to discuss socially sustainable development in the mining industry and the communities surrounding the mines. The discussions are based on results from a prestudy and literature review on mining and sustainable development conducted during 2013–2014 at Luleå University of Technology in Sweden. ‘A social licence to mine’ is important for the mining industry, but the social dimension is a relatively underdeveloped dimension when it comes to sustainable development in general and the mining industry in particular, one reason probably being the lack of effective methods for capturing social impacts. The mining industry and the surrounding communities face many challenges that provide both possibilities and obstacles to socially sustainable development; eg aspects such as gender, work conditions and cultural aspects. For example, a strong mining workplace culture and community identity can create strong cohesion but also lead to excluding certain groups, rejecting new ideas and reinforcing obsolete values. Other challenges include recruitment, as well as health and safety in relation to an increased use of fly-in-fly-out, contractors and automation of mining. Some challenges relate to the effects of fluctuations in the mining market. There is a lack of research that links attitudes, policies and activities within companies to their impact on the wider community, and vice versa. Base metal ores contain low levels of toxic/hazardous elements such as arsenic, antimony, bismuth, cadmium, lead and mercury. Given the large tonnage of base metal ores mined and processed each year globally, the accumulated mass of minor elements introduced into the biosphere is large and could be expected to have a significant environmental impact. Life cycle analysis (LCA) is a methodology that has been developed to assess the environmental impacts of material supply chains over their entire life cycle. Assessing the toxicity impacts of metallic wastes and incorporating these impacts into LCA methodology is not a simple task given the complexity of the issue. However, research and methodology development is in progress internationally to address this. Despite limitations concerning the lack of a coherent framework for characterising the toxicity impacts of metals, including issues such as bioavailability, a study was carried out to give first estimates of the relative toxicity impacts of various waste streams from metal production processes. The wastes considered were: red mud; sulfide tailings (copper, nickel, lead/zinc); lead/zinc slags; synthetic rutile residue; iron oxide residue; and copper slags and anode slimes. These toxicity estimates can be considered the æworst caseÆ scenario for these wastes, where all the metals present are bioavailable. Combining estimates of the amounts of the various waste streams produced in Australia each year with the toxicity results showed that despite their relatively low human toxicity impact per unit mass compared to some other waste streams, red mud and the various sulphide tailings had the highest annual human toxicity load on the environment, along with copper smelting slag and dust. Data from the pH dependent leaching test reported in the literature were assumed to represent first approximations of metal bioavailability and used to compare the two approaches to estimating the toxicity impacts of red mud.

India is the world’s third-largest producer of coal and is endowed with the fifth-largest coal reserves in the world. Surface mining straddles the entire domain of the Indian coal mining industry, yielding over 88 per cent of production. With continually rising domestic demands, it has to shoulder the responsibility of sustaining the requisite increase in coal production and chasing commensurate stripping targets. Such an ambitious task calls for the deployment of smart technologies. In such a demanding situation, cast blasting of overburden has emerged as a promising alternative for enhancing production and productivity of dragline pits.The cast blasting technique reduces stripping costs significantly as it utilises the chemical energy of explosives in place of mechanical energy to move large volumes of overburden quickly. Proper application of cast blasting not only reduces overall mining costs but also increases coal production. This paper investigates and evaluates the potential of the cast blasting technique, with special reference to dragline pits employing the rehandle method of extended bench. The economic feasibility of the technique is also ensured under different scenarios so that considerable benefits would accrue to the individual surface coalmines. To underline the efficacy of the technique, different cast blasting models have been formulated under a range of operational and economic scenarios that resemble present day practices in India. Pike River Coal Limited is in the process of developing the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine will be developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km north-east of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners and hydraulic extraction. The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park.   As such, the major restriction to planned extraction is protection of: +        the western escarpment, +        vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, +        permanent water courses, +        significant vegetation, and +        steep slopes.   The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumps down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.

Ok Tedi Mining Limited has recently completed the first phase of a trial to compare the performance of D26B Krebs cyclones in different configurations to the new Warman 650 mm CAVEX cyclones. From 1992, rougher flotation feed size has increased from the target d80 grind size of 150 ¦m with increasing SAG mill throughput. At high SAG mill throughput, operators have difficulty maintaining the target cyclone feed pressure and must increase the cyclone feed density, thus resulting in a coarsening of the cyclone split. Warman International have developed the CAVEX high capacity cyclone. The new CAVEX cyclones, when compared to the Krebs units appear to:produce a measurable increase in volumetric flow for the same pressure drop; maintain or decrease the proportion of coarse particles reporting to overflow; and lower the overflow density. In all plant trials to-date, the CAVEX cyclones appear to be superior to the standard Ok Tedi Krebs cyclones. Further testwork is planned to evaluate modified Krebs cyclones (with recent design improvements) against the CAVEX cyclones.

Solid Energy New Zealand Limited owns and operates the Ohai coal field (Wairaki Coal Mining Licence, CML) in western Southland. The Morley Stream passes directly through the middle of the CML and has required diversion in the past to enable open cast mining to proceed. Solid Energy is evaluating two new open cast pits at Ohai. Commissioning these new pits would necessitate further diversion of the Morley Stream. One of these potential new mines is adjacent to an abandoned State Coal Mines (State Coal) pit and there is an opportunity to substantially rehabilitate this old pit as a corollary to the new mine and the stream diversion project.   Past Morley Stream diversions were undertaken by State Coal and so they predated the Resource Management Act 1991 and the degree of community environmental awareness and involvement that has become the norm these days. Not surprisingly the design and construction of the historic stream diversions was based purely upon mining (operational) and engineering considerations. This led to the stream being diverted in a manner that achieved the clinical conveyance of design volumes of water from points A and B.   Solid Energy realised that the proposed new diversions need to adopt more holistic and environmentally sustainable design principles while also including appropriate mining and engineering constraints. This project involved the design of a 1.7 km diversion of the Morley Stream (median flow of about 1000 litres/second) that would enable progressive prestripping and development of the new mines and would also address final rehabilitation (of the stream), geotechnical risks, hydrological and ecological issues. To address all of these factors the project required a multidisciplinary approach. Moreover, it required a clear understanding of how the mining operational constraints could be integrated with the environmental considerations. A significant aspect of the project was how to take account of fishery instream habitat needs, the resource consent requirements and most of all, the involvement of key stakeholders such as the Fish & Game Council, Department of Conservation, the Iwi and local community in the design process. This was achieved through coordinated consultation and stakeholder involvement in a technical design workshop.

The main direction in the mechanisation in the mines of the Donbas and the USSR is long-face technology with complexes on the base of hydraulic supports. On the base of the 30 year old experience of exploitation of the coal clearing systems the serious data about the behaviour of the contained rock, display of underground pressure 'on longwalls and preparatory workings have been accumulated. Exploitation works in mines of the USSR are carried out at different depths: from 1000m to 1200m. There are 26 mines in Donbas, which exceed the depth of 1000m. It is the mines of Donbas, where is a rich experience of the exploitation of coal seams in various conditions. Besides, there are wide variations on the factors of the extraction thickness, depth of seam, angle of dip, occurrence of gas dynamics and others. In many scientific establishments, and in Donetsk Polytechnical Institute also, there are scientific research/results, which can be of interest for the coal mining countries.The volume of coal mining from longwall system-mechanised walls in Donbas became stable at the end of the 70s at level of 70 percent. All the efforts to increase this level have not given any notable results, not saying about the technical-economical data, which gradually deteriorate. It shows that positive progress in using the technology for the long walls is over and it is necessary to find new ways of mechanisation of coal winning.

The Northern Sewerage Project (NSP) is a $650 M infrastructure project that will increase the capacity of the sewerage system for Melbourne’s growing northern suburbs while also helping to protect the Merri and Moonee Ponds creeks by significantly reducing the number of sewage overflows that can occur after heavy rainfall. The NSP consists of two stages: Stage 1 (NSP1) will be owned and operated by Melbourne Water Corporation, and Stage 2 (NSP2) will be owned by Yarra Valley Water and operated by Melbourne Water Corporation.Glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) was used on both NSP stages, however, since Stage 1’s schedule for installation of GRP was slightly ahead of Stage 2’s, this paper will only focus on Stage 1’s use of GRP.NSP1 involves the construction of 7.9 km of new sewer tunnel ranging in diameter from 1.6 to 2.5 m, five main access shafts at depths of up to 65 m, and connections to the existing sewerage system including several access manholes. Construction began in 2007, and project completion is expected in 2012.The original design for NSP1 specified the use of high-density polyethylene (HDPE-) line precast concrete pipes as the final tunnel lining and HDPE-lined reinforced concrete for the access shafts and manholes. During construction, the rising cost of precast concrete pipes and the introduction of an additional GRP pipe supplier in the market justified a review of the tunnel final lining material. The contractor-proposed GRP pipe alternative was accepted for the final tunnel lining based on time and cost savings that were possible without compromising the design intent. After gaining experience with GRP through this design change, Melbourne Water Corporation reviewed and accepted GRP as the final lining for five smaller connection manholes. The use of GRP for the manholes was particularly inventive as the redesign made use of the approved tunnel GRP pipes as both a structural and corrosion-resistant lining.This paper discusses the use of GRP on NSP1; how the change in material, from concrete to GRP, affected the design philosophies assumed during detailed design; and how construction methods were modified to handle the less rigid GRP material. Details on the structural, hydraulic and durability considerations for the design are included, as are details about the time and cost savings and the quality and safety improvements that were achieved during construction.

A desulfurised tailings cover was installed at the Detour Lake Mine in Ontario, Canada, to reduce oxygen penetration into the underlying sulfidic tailings. The cover ranges from one to 1.5 m in thickness and was intended to maintain high water saturation to reduce oxygen diffusion and consume oxygen by oxidation of the residual sulfide minerals. The tailings impoundment was instrumented to measure climatic parameters, water levels and water content profiles within the tailings and single-layer cover. One year of monitoring data was collected. Additional tailings samples were obtained for geotechnical and geochemical characterisation. The average grain size of the cover material was found to be coarser than the underlying tailings. Monitoring also indicated that air entry values of the cover material were lower than the tailings. Numerical modelling was conducted on the cover to predict water content profiles under varying climate conditions together with the depth of oxygen penetration and diffusive oxygen fluxes. Estimates of the diffusion coefficient and kinetic oxidation rates from field data compared well with values obtained by laboratory measurements. Numerical simulations indicate water saturations of less than 85 per cent can be expected under varying climate conditions. Predicted oxygen flux rates through the desulfurised cover over tailings with high acid potential indicate low flux rates reaching these tailings due to either consumption of oxygen by residual sulfur within the cover or saturation of the underlying tailings.

When used in suitable ground conditions, rock bolts can have advantages over other permanent tunnel lining solutions. Permanent rock bolts offer flexibility in tunnelling profile and rapid rock bolt installation can enable time and cost savings. There are also disadvantages when considering the suitability of rock bolts for permanent support installations. These generally concern achieving the specified durability requirement over the specified design life. By investigating alternate approaches to rock bolt installation, quality assurance (QA), monitoring and design life it may be possible to alleviate some of these concerns.The design and construction benefits that can be realised through the use of rock bolts are primarily related to reducing project program time. This time reduction could be realised if rock bolts are considered as a permanent solution, with the installation being completed as a part of the primary excavation cycle. Any reduction of the program could allow direct and indirect cost savings and in the case of a major project, allow the revenue stream to be realised earlier.Currently ambiguity exists where the treatment of rock bolts as permanent support components is inconsistent with that of (often identical) ground anchors, as utilised in stabilising cut and cover structures. The ground support design process, implementation and testing are generally similar, though the acceptance of rock bolts as long-term support elements is treated differently to ground anchors in technical specifications.This paper discusses some of the benefits available through the use of rock bolts. It offers different solutions to the concerns surrounding durability, including alternate approaches to installation, Quality Assurance practices and monitoring solutions. The selection of an alternate design life is also investigated as another means of alleviating concerns around long-term durability. The paper will also provide an indication of savings that could be expected through the use of rock bolts as part of a long-term support system.

Recent updates on tailings dam design guidelines require analysis of undrained (short-term) stability with the application of the SHANSEP model. The SHANSEP model, which was originally developed for alluvial soils, predicates that the Undrained Shear Strength (Su) increases with increasing effective stress. Residual soils by their nature do not necessarily follow this relationship. This paper examines an alternate method to define Su over a range of effective stress conditions for residual soils. Residual soils, formed by weathering of their parent rocks, are generally micro-structured in nature. The microstructural features, such as interparticle bonding, play a fundamental role in stress-strain behaviour of the residual soils. As interparticle bonding is independent of effective stress and void ratio, the undrained shear strength of residual soils is expected to be less dependent on effective stress than alluvial soils, especially at low stress levels. A series of triaxial tests conducted on residual soils, however, indicated that the undrained shear strength and the undrained shear strength ratio (Su/σv’) are to a degree dependant on effective stress. It was found that the undrained shear strength ratio is significantly higher under low stress levels and progressively reduces with increasing effective stress. Based on the laboratory testing data, a strength function with varying undrained shear strength ratios can be developed for the residual soils under the stress range anticipated for a design of a tailings dam. This includes capping the input undrained strength at lower effective stresses based on the drained (effective) and minimum undrained strength. The Factor of Safety (FOS) calculated for the embankment utilising the traditional limit equilibrium (LE) method indicated the application of undrained strength function for the residual soils can provide a significant optimisation for the embankment design compared to adopting a constant undrained shear strength ratio or constant undrained shear strength in the design.

In this study, the authors compiled some case history data and present some typical examples of rock slope stability issues in Afghanistan with a special emphasis on Kandahar region and categorise rock slope failures according to the principles of modern rock slope engineering. The slopes considered involve rock-cut, natural rock slopes mainly. The effect of structural geology and discontinuous nature of rock mass on both slope-cuts and natural rock slopes is taken into account and some preliminary assessments on the stable and unstable rock slopes are presented. Furthermore, the seismic effect on their stability is also considered. It is also pointed out that similar issues could be observed in open pit mines, which may be exploited in years to come.

Froth flotation process requires the use of frothers. These important flotation agents are commonly characterised as either æselectiveÆ or æpowerfulÆ and are chosen following general guidelines and verification by laboratory and/or pilot plant tests. Fundamental properties of the flotation frothers have been extensively studied over the last few years. These studies have led to the development of standardised procedures to characterise frothers in terms of their ability to reduce bubble size and to increase foam stability. In this research project, the performance of five frothers in flotation of coal is evaluated and related to the fundamental properties of these agents. Since the recovery of water in the concentrate is closely related to the non-selective transport of solid particles by entrainment, the tested frothers are also assessed in terms of their ability to promote the transport of water towards the froth collection zone, both in absence and in presence of solids.

The Rosedale Outfall Project utilised an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) for only the second time in Auckland. Although the tunnel was excavated fully through East Coast Bays Formation (ECBF), the downhill gradient along with some unexpected areas of extreme water posed some significant challenges during construction.The Rosedale Waste Water Treatment Plant Outfall Tunnel project was commissioned in response to the growing needs of North Shore City, New Zealand. The outfall tunnel comprises a 3 km long segmentally lined tunnel and a 2.1 km buried marine pipeline, and discharges 2.7 km offshore. The capacity of the new outfall is 6 m3/s compared to the existing outfall capacity of 1 m3/s.Following previous project experience, and with the tunnel located along its full length in the bedrock weak sandstone/siltstone bedrock of the East Coast Bays Formation, tunnelling conditions were expected to be benign. However during construction six high inflow events were encountered, including a full face (3.4 m diameter) of Albany Conglomerate over a 48 m length of tunnel. This material comprised cobbles in an uncemented sand matrix, and inflows were recorded at over 25 L/s.This paper describes the design challenges on the project including the design of a steel fibre reinforced segmental lining for internal pressures. The specification of the machine is discussed including the modifications required to enhance the risk mitigation measures already in place. The ground conditions encountered are discussed and have improved the knowledge of the range of conditions that can be expected in Auckland.Despite the challenges presented during construction, excellent progress rates were achieved and the tunnelling was successfully completed ahead of program.

The green energy transition is expected to require a range of valuable minerals, which could be supplied through deep-sea polymetallic nodule mining. Deep-sea polymetallic nodules are mineral deposits with a composition well suited to produce lithium batteries, which are expected to be a necessary energy storage solution (Diouf and Pode, 2015; Paulikas et al, 2020) for the energy transition. By 2050 the annual demand for both cobalt and lithium is estimated to increase by around 450 per cent from 2018 levels (Hund et al, 2023), with the annual demand for nickel being greater than 2 million tons, and copper greater than 1 million tons. Polymetallic nodule mining is well positioned to provide these minerals in the near future. An intricate and comparatively unexplored ecosystem thrives within and surrounding the nodule fields (Smith et al, 2008). Deep-sea mining operations have the potential to disrupt and permanently damage this ecosystem through introduced pollution, artificial noise and light, and habitat destruction. Hence, there is a pressing need for new engineering and scientific endeavours to focus on developing new technologies to reduce any environmental impact from mining.

Rope guides, consisting of ropes spanning between anchor points at the top and bottom of shafts, have frequently been considered as a viable alternative to fixed guides, comprising buntons and guides. However, their design has generally been based on empirically derived rules, arising from European hoisting practice of 50 to 100 years ago. This paper describes a recent technology development project aimed at defining and quantifying the important forces acting on rope guided conveyances, calculating the resulting displacement of the conveyances and assessing whether the displacements are acceptable or not. The paper describes the derivation of aerodynamic force coefficients based on CFD analyses and other significant forces acting on the conveyance and rope system. The conveyance displacements may be calculated using computer simulation of the mechanical system, or approximately using simplified equations given in the paper. Measurements taken to confirm the suitability of the proposed formulation are described. The combination of displacements and assessment of the rope guide system design are proposed, based on the ratio of design clearances and the predicted displacements.

How often does one hear that a recent feasibility study was not a success? Alternatively, when scope of the feasibility study was sent out to tender there was a large discrepancy in tendered prices. If the tendered prices were to be compared to the consumer market, for instance the purchase of a car, where the concept is transport in a controlled and safe manner, prices vary by large factors, but then so do the specifications. In the case of a feasibility study, prices should be within a tighter margin as the tenderers are all quoting against the same concept and specification. Why do these discrepancies occur? Price discrepancies will in every likelihood be attributed to two main factors; one, the perceived amount of work and two, the ability of the bidder to carry the risk associated with the feasibility study. It is, therefore, important that the scoping of the feasibility study covers the detailed requirements as clearly as possible stating what level of accuracy is required. The feasibility study is one of the first activities in the life of a project. The study, like the project it is investigating, is subject to the constraints of time, cost and quality. Its primary objectives are to demonstrate the viability of a project within the outlined scope and constraints.

A great deal of technical and research effort has been applied to the development of models to predict fragmentation from rock blasting. A number of quite useful empirical or engineering models are currently available to blasting engineers and consultants, while more sophisticated approaches using mechanistic and numerical descriptions of rock breakage continue to be developed and applied by researchers and explosives companies.The fragmentation resulting from any blast will be heavily dependent on the properties of the rock mass being blasted; however, most empirical models rely on ‘rock factors’ generated from simple rock mass properties to describe the influence of the rock on the blasting outcome. In contrast, mechanistic models need explicit rock mass properties that require sophisticated laboratory measurements and detailed structural data if realistic outcomes are to be generated. The fragmentation modeller is caught between excessively simple rock mass descriptions for the empirical models and excessively complex data requirements for the mechanistic models.This paper briefly reviews the basis of a range of fragmentation models and the rock mass properties on which they rely. Shortcomings in the way that the mining industry tends to characterise the blasting properties of rock are discussed and some practical approaches are described to quantify these properties in both operating and greenfield mining environments. The environmental and economic impacts of a significant dependence on fossil fuels are affecting the future of sectors such as of mining. These impacts are prompting the Australian Government to seek solutions for reducing its dependence on fossil fuels more generally, such developing clean energy and improving energy efficiency. However, limited research has been undertaken to assess the potential synergies between clean energy and mining in an uncertain global future. This paper analyses current energy use by mining in Australia and reviews the drivers and opportunities for energy efficiency and cleaner energy technologies to be coupled to mining under three future scenarios. Linkages between mining and clean energy are investigated for three global scenarios for mining and metals to 2030, developed by the World Economic Forum (WEF), namely Green Trade Alliance, Rebased Globalism and Resource Security. These scenarios are applied to assess how they could change the barriers, opportunities and trade-offs required for the development of a more sustainable energy sources by the minerals industry in Australia.
