Over the last six years Mandalay Resources has increased production rates and improved safety outcomes at its Costerfield mine in Victoria, Australia. This mine is an underground operation utilising narrow mining techniques to extract vertical veins, and produces up to 80 000 equivalent ounces of gold per annum, in both gold and antimony value.The operational challenges of narrow vein mining include controlling overbreak when veins being mined are only 300 mm wide. The mine has developed methods and modified equipment to suit extraction of these veins. Productivity improvements over the period have involved development of a stoping method and equipment to suit 1.8 m wide development drives. Over the last five years and during a skills shortage, recruitment, training and retention of personnel has been key to keeping corporate knowledge and skills to execute a careful efficient mining technique to minimise overbreak.Managing an underground operation close to nearby residents has unique challenges. Historically Victorian residents had family members work as underground miners; however, in the current day with few underground operations in this jurisdiction, community knowledge of mining has decreased. The Costerfield Operations are only 100 m from the nearest residence and the company values community engagement, partnership and investment with local Heathcote organisations.The mine has invested substantially in executive coaching of its leadership team early, which has paid dividends in problem solving potential of that team and ensuring the operation delivers on its promises to all stakeholders. The operation has become safer and employees are now more aware of their individual contribution in producing safe, efficient gold and antimony that benefit the whole operation, community and the region.CITATION:McCarthy, M, 2016. The appropriate design of liners continues to be an issue on many mills worldwide. Loss of milling capacity especially at liner change, uneven wear lives along the mill, substantial scrap on worn liners, excess mill down-time, undesirably short and unreliable wear lives are all common issues. This paper presents a designed approach to liner optimisation that follows a logical path of initial design and step-wise improvements based on liner wear monitoring. The target is to have a good liner design from start-up, then tune the profiles, heights and thicknesses based on wear monitoring. This is conducted as a team of liner specialist, site personnel and liner supplier. The application to the Pustynnoye SAG mill of JSC Altynalmas in Kazakhstan is presented. The paper outlines the adoption and evolution of ‘sustainable development’ as a concept in tailings management practices in the mining industry over the last 30 years. Over 500 lives have been lost in tailings facility accidents since World War 2. The paper outlines commonalities in many of these accidents, particularly the role of excess water. It considers the role effective tailings management can play in enhancing the social acceptability of mining in the future.Tailings management is a major operating cost at many mines while the cost of successfully closing tailings facilities is also very high. Current tailings management practices in the industry are outlined. The technical and engineering challenges of reducing potential risks associated with tailings by reducing water entrainment are described. The successful development of practical techniques to better manage tailings and reduce water consumption and wastage are described. For example, water removal in the alumina industry to produce a paste for dry stacking is now a reality.The future adoption of these new risk reducing techniques by the industry is discussed and the implications of the adoption or non-adoption of these techniques on the industry’s future ‘social licence’ is considered.

The Ban Houayxai Gold-Silver Operation is a producing asset for Australian-based copper and gold producer, PanAust Limited. The Operation lies within PanAust’s 2600 square-kilometre Phu Bia Contract Area in northern Laos. Commencing production in 2012, Ban Houayxai is operated by PanAust’s Lao-registered company, Phu Bia Mining. PanAust owns a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining. The Government of Laos owns the remaining 10 per cent. The Operation mines an intermediate sulphidation epithermal gold-silver deposit and comprises an open-pit feeding ore to a conventional carbon-in-leach process plant. Metallurgical recoveries for gold and silver are approximately 75-85 per cent and 55 per cent respectively. To year-end 2017, the Operation had poured 0.65 million ounces (oz) of gold and 4.7 million oz of silver. The Ban Houayxai Ore Reserve supports a mine life of approximately four years from the end of 2017. The Ban Houayxai deposit is in an early Permian volcano-sedimentary unit which is part of a late Carboniferous to early Permian (310–270 million years ago) volcanic-plutonic sequence of the Truong Son Fold Belt. The deposit formed when hot saline (240–415°C, 2.7–13.0 weight per cent NaCl equivalent) fluids ascended from a geologically fertile island arc porphyry into overlying volcanics along a fault or faults in the early Permian (290–256 million years ago) (Manaka et al, 2014). Crandallite and millisite in Christmas Island 'B' and 'C' phosphate ores are rapidly decomposed by sodium hydroxide solutions at about 80QC. As these phosphates generally contain less than 1% silica, an alkaline extraction process can be designed, in which up to 95% of the sodium hydroxide used, may be recycled. The insoluble residue consists of an impure, highly reactive apatite, which in pot trials, has given good responses as a direct application fertiliser; alternatively this residue can be underacidulated to give a granular product with fertiliser potential. The hot leaching solution contains up to 95% of the alumina and approx- imately half of the phosphate from the original ore. Simple crystallising techniques have been developed on a laboratory-scale to use this leaching solution for producing smelter-grade alumina and detergent-quality trisodium phosphate. As the demand for detergents is limited, an investigation was made of the reaction between trisodium phosphate and slaked lime, derived from a high-grade New Zealand limestone occurring near Oamaru. The product is calcium phosphate, containing up to 40% P205, and less than 0.2% each of iron, aluminium and fluorine, and it should be a useful raw material for phosphoric acid manufacture. A preliminary economic evaluation of the whole process looks promising, And warrants further investigations, including pilot-plant work.

The mining of high-grade narrow vein deposits is a predominant field of activity in the precious metal sector. These types of deposits are located throughout the globe and have a significant presence in mining operations. The principle factor that has undermined the profitability and effectiveness of mining such ore zones is the substantial dilution that occurs when blasting with explosives during extraction. In order to minimise ore dilution, the thermal fragmentation mining method enables the operator to extract a narrow mineralised corridor, 30 cm to 1 m wide (according to the true width of the ore vein). By inserting a strong burner powered by diesel fuel and air into a pilot hole previously drilled directly into the vein, a thermal reaction occurs spalling the rock and enlarging the hole to 30 - 100 cm in diameter. This patented method produces highly concentrated ore, resulting in 400 - 500 per cent less dilution when compared to conventional mining methods. The mining method was conceived with the aim of mining ounces, not tonnes. This method of extraction, reduces the environmental impact of mining operations since much smaller quantities of rock are displaced, stockpiled, and treated using chemical agents. The fully mechanised equipment operated by a two-person team, maximises the effectiveness of skilled personnel, increases productivity, and reduces risks of injuries. Important economic benefits are generated for large- and small-scale mining operations alike. For large-scale operations, the mining method increases mining reserves, lowers the cost per ounce, and increases the total profitability of existing mine operations. The method also significantly lowers costs and risks of developing and mining small-scale deposits, requiring less investment capital, shortening the payback period, thus reducing the lending risk.  Combined with a small modular processing unit able to process between 100 - 300 tons per day, the method substantially lowers the financial break-even point for small-scale mining operations in a narrow vein environment. The company has been working with the technology at its Rocmec 1 mining site; results achieved and future developments are discussed.

The subject of my paper is one which, I am certain, has exercised the mind of every man on whom depends the safe and economical conduct of mining operations; particularly in this district where the enormous size of the ore body has necessitated the mine workings assuming a scale that was hitherto unknown in the history of Australian mining. I, therefore, approach the subject with the feeling that I am displaying considerable t.emerity, knowing as I do that the subject has engaged the earnest attention and thought of everybody immediately concerned in the extraction of the ore of this district, and particularly of the Broken Hill lode.I think I shall not be contradicted in asserting that a very large proportion of eur accidents are distinctly traiceable to inexperience on the part of the miner, and records at the mines and verdicts of coroners' juries in many instances uphold this assertion by showing that the accident under notice was the direct result of lack of knowledge of the conditions of the work, or, at any rate, of an error of judgment hardly conceivable in the experienced miner. That this assertion is correct may also be proved by visiting any of the mines of the district.To the experienced eye it will be evident at once that a very large number are not in way skilful in the use of their tools and, therefore, lack the experience which of necessity must be coincident with the acquirement of skill. The in-pipe treatment of slurries with polymer addition shortly prior to deposition is a noteworthy emerging technology of increasing popularity. Although polymer treatment has been shown to substantially modify and improve depositional and dewatering behaviour in a significant number of cases, the impacts of polymer treatment on geotechnical performance of tailings are less well understood. For example, certain combinations of polymer and slurry type have been shown to result in lower final densities at a given vertical effective stress. Despite these lower densities, polymer-treated tailings often exhibit peak undrained shear strengths consistent with untreated material. However, the sensitivity and/or brittleness of the material may be negatively influenced by the looser state created. Although these changes have been studied, most testing available in the literature was undertaken on relatively ‘fresh’ samples of polymer-treated material. However, significant shear may occur following treatment and prior to the commencement of settling and self-weight consolidation as the material moves down the beach.To study the effects of shearing on the subsequent performance of polymer-treated tailings, a test program consisting of consolidation, triaxial and direct simple shear tests was undertaken on presheared polymer-treated material. Materials used were identical to those used in previously published studies on the impacts of polymer treatment in a ‘fresh’ condition. Shearing of the polymer-treated material generally appeared to lessen the impacts of the polymer treatment process. However, the behaviour of the material when sheared indicated that the polymer was still impacting the behaviour of the material in some respects. The results indicate the importance of the consideration of shearing on material behaviour when planning and designing a tailings deposit where polymer treatment is to be implemented.CITATION:Reid, D and Fourie, A, 2015. The offshore Maui gas/condensate field was discovered by Shell BP and Todd on Services Limited in 1969. Subsequent appraisal drilling and negotiations with the Government led to a development agreement, æThe Maui White Paper' being concluded in 1973. Part of this agreement provided for the Government to take a 50 per cent shareholding in the field. The field is comprised of a double domed anticlinal structure containing two gas reservoirs at depths ranging from 2700 - 3000 m. Water depth is 110 m. The development plan called for two standalone steel platforms to be installed sequentially over a period of some years depending on gas demand. The first platform (MPA) was put in place in 1976 but difficulties were experienced with piling and drilling of the 12 (later increased to 14) wells did not start until 1978. First gas was piped ashore late in 1979.

In 2013 the Mopani Copper Mine Mufulira plant in Zambia embarked on a project that was aimed at improving concentrator recoveries. The project commenced with the automation of the milling and flotation circuits. This involved the installation of new instrumentation, namely measurement devices and actuators, and the connection of these to new programmable logic controllers (PLCs).The infrastructure changes were followed by the implementation of basic proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers on the PLCs. Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) interfaces were also implemented to allow for switching between controller modes, inputting of setpoint variables and to provide a visual display for process monitoring. The final phase of the project involved the installation and commissioning of advanced process control (APC) solutions on the milling and flotation circuits. This work was carried out by Mintek over 21 on-site days. The APC solutions included the MillStar and FloatStar suites of advanced controllers.The MillStar control suite focused on stabilising the mill feed and mill discharge on the two primary mills as well as the flotation circuit feed. Mintek’s CyLas instruments, which provide a measurement of the hydrocyclone underflow angle, were also installed. The measurements were incorporated into the discharge stabilisation control on both milling circuits. The FloatStar level stabiliser controller provided flotation cell pulp level control on fourteen cells, including two columns.Performance tests showed that the Mintek APC system stabilised the mill feed and mill discharge while ensuring the process remained within operational constraints. The MillStar control system utilised the CyLas instrument to prevent roping on the hydrocyclone underflow. This was not always achieved under normal operation. Additionally, the flotation section was stabilised as a result of improved level control by the FloatStar control system.Performance comparisons showed that the Mintek control system improved the operation of the milling and flotation circuits resulting in a greater copper recovery.CITATION:Naidoo, A, De Gee, B E and Viviers, N, 2014. THE de-silverizing of base bullion at the Port Pirie works is carried out in accordance with the principles of the well-known Parkes process. The base bullion produced by the blast furnace department carries (apart from silver values) impurities, the chief of which are copper, antimony, and arsenic. In order to more clearly indicate the grade of the base bullion, the following analysis, representative of a half-year's production of base bullion, is submitted...Before proceeding with the actual operation of de-silverizing, it is necessary that the impurities, copper, antimony, and arsenic, should be eliminated. This is accomplished in the following steps :- (1) Removal of Coppel - Copper is largely present in the base bullion as dissolved sulphide, and this is removed by liquation in a reverberatory type furnace, of which the following are the essential details :-Working temperature 7500 to 8500 C.Coal consumption per 24 hours 2 tons.The hearth of the furnace is encased in a steel tank 22 ft. 4 in. long by 13 ft. 4 in. wide by 2 ft. 10 in. deep; the bottom of the tank is covered by a depth of composition conforming to the invert :-Cement 39 cwt.Brick dust 8.4 tons.Fireclay 0.6 tons.Sand 0.6 tons...

In arid and semi-arid areas evapotranspiration (ET) cover systems are often used to mitigate contaminated seepage from hazardous mine waste into the adjacent environment. The theory of ET covers is based on the water balance equation with the aim of minimising seepage. While cover systems are commonly trialled, the influences of variability in climate and cover structure on water balance equation parameters are seldom investigated.Water balance equation parameters and their variability were analysed for two ET cover trials constructed from benign waste rock in semi-arid Australia. Seasonal and inter-annual variations in rainfall critically influence cover performance. For successful cover system operation, the average return periods for higher than average rainfall should be taken into account. In addition, failure of ET covers has a higher probability in areas with marked rainfall seasonality. Water holding capacity and plant available water content are low in covers constructed from waste rock. Changes in water holding capacity due to variation in particle size distribution are likely and critically influence cover performance. The application of topsoil can be beneficial for water ingress control through run-off, but a balance has to be struck between run-off, erosion and plant available water. Changes in vegetation composition only influence evapotranspiration water losses at plant coverage exceeding 50 per cent, which is unrealistic in semi-arid areas. This study showed that the capacity of ET cover systems to hold and dispose of received rainfall is often lower than assumed by industry practitioners. Permeability and fluid pathways in fracture-controlled hydrothermal systems are governed by a dynamic competition between permeability-creation processes and permeability-destruction processes. Permeability evolution is coupled with the evolution of fluid pressure and stress states. Key permeability-creation processes are micro-scale to macroscopic fracture growth, and the generation of damage zones during co-seismic slip on faults or aseismic creep on faults and shear zones. The competing permeability-destruction processes include crack-healing and sealing, compaction and pore cementation. High rates of permeability destruction in hydrothermal systems require ongoing permeability enhancement to sustain high fluid fluxes and ore genesis.   In aseismic regimes, competition between permeability-creation processes and permeability-destruction processes can lead to continuous flow in deep level hydrothermal systems. However, in seismogenic regimes, rapid co-seismic permeability-enhancement is followed by progressive permeability-destruction in the intervening interseismic periods, and leads to episodic flow. The results of high pressure experiments are used to illustrate how pore fluid factors and stress states are dynamically coupled with permeability evolution in hydrothermal regimes. Particularly in the seismogenic mid- to upper crust, large changes in permeability during the seismic cycle govern relative rates of change of fluid pressure around active faults and shear zones. Rapid, post-seismic recovery of pore fluid pressures, relative to rates of shear stress recovery, leads to growth of hydrofracture networks prior to successive fault rupture events.   Pre-rupture hydrofracture networks do not develop where post-rupture fluid pressure recovery is modest relative shear stress recovery. At elevated temperatures, low rates of pore fluid pressure recovery relative to shear stress recovery promote ductile shear failure and grain-scale permeability enhancement within shear zones prior to rupture events.   The influence of pore fluid pressure cycling, shear stress cycling, and deformation processes in controlling the evolution of permeability, flow localisation, and flow anisotropy at the deposit scale are illustrated for mesothermal and epithermal lode gold systems.

Bacteria can play a key role in the processing of 'difficult' ores. Bioleaching opens the way to potentially extract copper from vast amounts of otherwise hard to process refractory low-grade chalcopyrite. In my talk I will outline our research philosophy to develop bioleaching as a Precision Processing unit process step. In our view, Precision Processing is a sophisticated approach to mineral processing where the ultimate goal is to measure and characterise the ore body in-ground and in real time during mining, allowing the down-stream unit processes (bioleaching, in this case) to be continuously tailored and tuned via feedback and feed-forward controls to obtain the highest possible recoveries at the lowest possible cost and environmental impact. I will describe some of the work that we are undertaking to better understand the interfacial phenomena underlying the fundamental bioleaching process with the aim of coming to a Precision Processing approach. We use techniques such as interfacial electrochemistry (scanning electrochemical microscopy, SECM), AFM, zeta potential measurement, and synchrotron science to elucidate the parameters that drive bacterial selectivity and adhesion, bacterial metabolism, and dissolution and precipitation processes for model systems and real chalcopyrite ores. As examples of our research, I will discuss in some detail our method to produce and characterise micro-patterned CuxS - silica thin films as model substrates for electrochemical and bacterial adhesion work and our approach to the interfacial chemical characterisation of extracellular polymeric substances of bio-active bacterial cells. I will also cover some of our recent findings relating to measurement and interpretation of bacterial adhesion on sulfidic substrates and its implications for bacterial adhesion and substrate selectivity. After having identified and discussed crucial leaching parameters, such as pH, Eh, T, [Cu2+], and [O2], the talk will go on addressing some of the early achievements and challenges encountered in our work to design and prepare low-cost, rugged sensing devices that allow the in-situ (in this case, in-dump or in-heap) localised measurement of these parameters. I will conclude my talk by painting the picture of how the work of our group might contribute to realising the dream of transforming bioleaching into genuine high-tech Precision Processing of minerals. Within the past decade, incidents of mining–community conflicts have grown dramatically and represent one aspect of a phenomenon known as social risk. Research published in 2014 indicates that a lack of social acceptance is now a leading and costly cause of delays for mining projects.The rise of social risk, complemented by the need to earn the trust of an increasing number of stakeholders so that mining projects can be developed effectively, is problematic for the industry. Conflicts are occurring in situations where companies are fully compliant with regulatory and legal requirements, despite initiatives by mining companies to earn social acceptance and despite the proliferation of tools to support corporate social responsibility. Intensifying the impact of social risk is the fact that it has increased during a time in the global mining sector when companies have had to grapple with declining commodity prices, increasing capital costs and debt levels and the challenges of mining lower-grade deposits.This paper will explore a hypothesis that in today’s interconnected society, social risk in the mining sector constitutes a legitimate business risk that must be managed strategically. The reality facing mining companies is that information, once considered confidential, now travels quickly on social networks and via a growing number of groups and individuals that have earned a legitimate right to be classified as stakeholders in projects that affect their communities. To be successful, it is suggested that companies will benefit from increasing internal collaboration and providing training to equip teams to mitigate social risk to mining projects and protect reputation capital. Following the successful completion of a marked ball test defining the potential wear benefits the high chrome alloys may offer against forged steel, as well as laboratory test work investigating changes in pulp chemistry and improvements to metallurgical performance, a plant trial was commissioned at NewcrestÆs Ridgeway concentrator. The paper briefly describes these results.Newcrest decided to convert their media charge by the top-up method. To monitor the trial a sampling protocol was put in place whereby the pulp chemistry was monitored before, during and after the purge. The metallurgical shift data was analysed using various statistical methods to determine if the metallurgical performance had improved with the change in grinding media. While the analysis indicated that the metallurgy had improved, not all of the benefits could be assigned to the change in grinding media alone. However, the combination of reduction in media wear and the increases in copper and gold recoveries suggested that it was economically viable to operate with high chrome grinding media.As with many trials of this nature the prevailing economic conditions are fluid and a decision was made to revert back to forged steel grinding media in an effort to reduce operating costs. Rockfalls or significant deterioration of mine openings can have significant safety and financial impacts for mining operations. The failure of drives in underground mines sometimes highlight deficiencies in the mine risk management systems in detecting geotechnical hazards and to prevent events that can have significant impact. Consequences from these failures includes fatalities, injuries, loss of revenue, additional cost, and potentially a loss in Ore Reserves. Where the impacts are severe, it also affects families and communities linked to the operation. The assessment of underground excavations requires consideration of the full range and spectrum of geotechnical hazards, design aspects, ground support, layouts and sequences. Where the assessment of these are insufficient or incorrect, it can result in drive failures. Care must be taken that meeting production targets and personnel pressures do not result in a situation where production take preference over a proper risk-based assessment of the drives to be mined. The risk management approach is now widely accepted in the mining industry for the control and management of risks in underground mines. Codes of Practices (COP’s), Ground Control Management Plans (GCMP), Principal Hazard Management Plans (PHMP’s) and technical guidance documents has become the norm for describing the mines main hazards, risk levels and intimating controls for safe passage of vehicles and mine personnel. However, where there is a disconnect between these documents and what is actually being done at the mine site, the COP’s and/or Management Plans become ineffective (or vice versa). This disconnect may occur due to the actual content of these documents, a lack of resources, or a lack of understanding about the implementation. There is therefore a need for sites to have a documented and implemented risk-based approach for assessing underground mine development. This approach or system needs to identify all hazards and other factors affecting mine development stability early on in the design process, and outline the risk classification and controls required. An enhanced gravity concentrator was installed in conjunction with an intensive leach reactor at the Sadiola plant in Mali last year and commissioned in December 2007. There has been much debate over the years as to the effect of gravity concentration on overall plant performance. The late Dr Laplante suggested that for every ten per cent of gold recovered by gravity, there was a corresponding 0.1 per cent to one per cent additional overall plant recovery. The results at Sadiola are consistent with this hypothesis with an overall four per cent gain in plant recovery. With total gold recovery of 12 per cent in the gravity section, grades are increased from 3.54 g/t in the gravity feed to an average of 2 600 g/t in the concentrator feed to the inline reactor. The recovery of gold in the inline reactor is in excess of 98.5 per cent. This paper discusses the background to the project, the laboratory test work prior to the equipment selection, the operational results of the system, as well as the benefi ts of the future application of high mass yield centrifugal concentrators in base metals, sulfides and industrial minerals. Bench scale, pilot scale and plant practice examples are also presented.
