Block caving has been the favoured mining method for large underground hard rock mines for the last few decades. The orebody must be of a size large enough to cave and generally amenable to a caving method. Typically, these mines ranged from 15 000 to 50 000 tonnes per day (50 kt/d) and have been some of the largest and most productive underground mines in the world.Now mining companies, in the quest for improved shareholder return, are looking for higher production rates from new underground mines. Whether a ‘Greenfields’ development, or a replacement for ageing large open pit mines, minimising capital and maximising production has been a focus of project teams. These new block cave mines are what have become known as ‘super caves’. These caves range from 80 kt/d to over 150 kt/d and are being planned or constructed by several major mining companies including Codelco, Freeport-McMoRan, Newcrest and Rio Tinto.Issues facing these super caves include high initial capital costs, very long development periods and significant technical challenges. These issues tend to make it difficult to present an attractive business case for such a project.This paper will discuss some of the potential benefits as well as the technical challenges and risks of operating a mine with the block or panel caving method at these very high tonnage rates. Considerations including geotechnical conditions, development rates, panel widths and ore column heights are discussed. New ZealandÆs share of global greenhouse gas emissions, at about one fifth of one per cent, is very small. But the profile of those emissions is unique among OECD countries; more than half come from methane and nitrous oxide associated with livestock agriculture. Consequently, fulfilling its obligations under the Kyoto Protocol is potentially quite onerous for New Zealand.In this paper we use a single region, static general equilibrium model to assess the implications for New Zealand of various climate change policy options. The energy and agriculture sectors are modeled in a detailed manner to enable realistic simulations to be carried out.Choosing an optimal set of policies is made more difficult by the fact that New Zealand relies heavily on emission intensive sectors for much of its export earnings. For example, one emission intensive sector alone, dairy, accounts for over 20 per cent of all merchandise exports. Avoiding carbon leakage is therefore an important consideration in selecting appropriate greenhouse policies.Our analysis shows the degree of sectoral adjustment required is substantial. In addition, the total costs depend on the uncertain level of variables such as the global carbon price and the level of afforestation activities in New Zealand, ie the rate of new forest planting.

The central Nanling region in South China experienced multistage granite intrusive events and corresponding metallogenic processes during the Early Yanshanian period (190–140 Ma). In this study, a wide variety of published data on age determination, petrological characteristics, major and trace elements compositions, whole rock Sr–Nd contents and zircon Hf isotopic composition of the representative granite composites were systematically collected to estimate their cooling-uplift rates, granite evolution processes and mineral deposit formation. These granites have been classified into two groups based on their age and geochemical variations: Group 1 (180–165 Ma) and Group 2 (165–150 Ma). Major and trace element geochemistry suggests that Group 2 experienced more intense magmatic evolution and differentiation than Group 1. In addition, Group 1 granitoids are classified as A1-type alkaline rocks with faster cooling and uplift rates, whereas Group 2 granites are considered as A2-type aluminous rocks with slower cooling and ascent rates. Furthermore, the Group 1 granitoids have younger Nd and Hf two-stage model ages but higher eNd(t) and eHf(t) values, indicating influence from crust–mantle interaction. In contrast, the Group 2 granites show different values, suggesting stronger upper crustal contamination or assimilation. The slowly cooled and ascended Group 2 granites experienced much heavier crustal contamination (or assimilation) and crystal fractionation, contributing to the large W–Sn mineralisation in the central Nanling region. Chatree Gold Mine is currently the only modern day gold mine operating in Thailand, and is situated approximately equidistant from Chiang Mai in the north and Bangkok in the south. Environmental guidelines set by the Thai authorities require Chatree Gold Mine to achieve a Total Cyanide level of 20 ppm or less in the process plant discharge slurry stream prior to release into the tailings storage facility. This paper describes both the initial difficulties faced in achieving compliance on this limit utilising the conventional INCO SO2/Air cyanide destruction system and the subsequent process improvements initiated to both the leaching process and the standard INCO process to achieve the current compliance levels of approximately 99/100 shifts. Improvements were focussed on the dual aspects of reducing the formation of WAD cyanide and ferrocyanide species in the leaching circuit coupled with process changes to improve removal of the ferrocyanide species from solution during the cyanide reduction stage.

Consents Required for Overseas Persons Overseas Investment Regulations 1974 Foreign investment proposals must be reviewed by the Overseas Investment Commission to ensure that these are in accord with national interests. Consent must be obtained from the Commission for: 1. New investment proposals which include: a. An overseas person acquiring 25 per cent or more of any class of share in a company. b. A New Zealand company issuing shares to an overseas person where this will result in that person owning 25 per cent or more of the company. c. An overseas person acquiring business assets for consideration in excess of $100 000. d. An overseas person commencing business in New Zealand. 2. Borrowing in New Zealand: An overseas person must obtain consent to raise funds in excess of $300 000 in New Zealand. 3. Borrowing Overseas: New Zealand incorporated companies must obtain consent to borrow overseas. Current policy is borrowing will be approved where the loan is for a specified fixed term of one year or more.

Future metal prices play a direct role in both the economic evaluation and short to medium planning of a mine scheduling sequence. It is difficult to predict with accuracy the future price of volatile metal commodities, however, it is possible to fix some future metal price, outside of long term contracts by the selling of futures contracts through a commodities exchange. The futures contract represents a fixed amount of a specified quality of a commodity for future delivery at a predetermined price. Several different types of hedging are possible, one in particular which is best suited for mining companies. There are relative advantages and disadvantages when trading in futures contracts and particular reference is made to gold contracts on the Sydney Futures Exchange.

A detailed analysis of faulting indicatcs that blocks of "greenstone" have been thrust beneath the southern end of the Mt. Isa orebodies.This "greenstone" basement is considered to be a major structural control in the localization of these orebodies.INTRODUCTIONThis paper is based on exploration carried out by Mining Corporation (Aust.) N.L. from 1956 to 1960 in the area immediately south of Mt. Isa, Queensland. During this period over 20,000 ft of diamond drilling was completed together with costeaning and geochemical exploration.Early in 1959, it became apparent that diamond drill information could not be correlated with the current geological concepts of this area and a detailed geological appraisal became necessary. In all, sixty square miles were mapped at a scale of 1 in. to 500 ft, using enlarged aerial photographs. All drill core was logged and sections re-interpreted.Professor K. C. Dunham of the University of Durham consulted on this project and contributed through valuable discussion. Dr. A. Day of the University of Sydney carried out a gravity survey in February 1960 and Dr. H. Wilshire of the same University undertook microscopic examination of rocks from the area. Certain sections of the area were investigated geochemically by Mr. K. K. Hughes of New Consolidated Gold Fields (Asia) Pty. China’s mineral deposits are the result of metallogenic processes associated with the geodynamic evolution of tectonic plates and eventual amalgamation into their modern configuration. The principal tectonic provinces of China comprise the North China Craton, Yangtze Craton, Cathaysia Craton, Tarim block, Altay-Tianshan-Hinggan orogens (part of the Central Asian Orogenic Bel), Central China orogens, Songpan-Ganze orogen and Alpine-Himalayan fold belts, which are part of the huge Tethysides. These tectonic elements are testimony to a complex geological history spanning more than 3000 million years. This contribution will focus on selected areas of the Altay-Tianshan, the fold belts surrounding the North China Craton and Yangtze Craton and the mineral systems along the Ailaoshan-Red River fault zone. Multi-episodic mineralisation is often characterised by different spatial trends exhibited by different generations of the mineralisation. The structural complexity of mineralisation together with the heterogeneous nature of the mineralised zones prevents unambiguous application of the conventional deterministic methodology for 3D constraining of the mineralised domains (ie conventional wireframing is ambiguous).A different approach, discussed in the present paper, includes a probabilistic definition of the domains encompassing one statistical population of the data. The domains are defined geostatistically using the indicator probability model. An indicator threshold is chosen for the definition of the high and low-grade domains. The spatial distribution of this indicator is then modelled by a variogram. The probability of exceeding the given grade threshold is than estimated by ordinary kriging for each modelled block. Blocks are then grouped according to their probability of exceeding the threshold and a continuous closed volume (domain) created from this likely patchy grouping using an appropriate structural model to fill the gaps). Methodology for the geostatistically assisted domaining is discussed in the paper. It is suggested that this technique represents an additional tool facilitating a structural interpretation of the mineralised zones.After the geostatistical domaining of the lode has been completed the grade within each of the domains is modelled using Uniform Conditioning method. Application of Uniform Conditioning for modeling the grade distribution has a significant advantage over linear methods (such as inverse distance or kriging) because Uniform conditioning enables estimation of local recoverable resources at different selective mining unit sizes that can be substantially smaller than the drilling density and are unable to be estimated directly.

The ACARP Landmark initiative has created the opportunity to advance the level of automation in the coal industry by first focusing on the core production area of longwall mining. A Landmark Longwall Automation project was commenced in July 2001. The major outcome of automation using on-face observation has been divided into ten outcome areas that have been fully scoped for a three-year initial project life. A major facilitating technology has been the implementation inertial navigation system (INS) technology that can map the shearer position in 3D. A focus of the project is to deliver a system that is at least as productive as the current most productive manually controlled longwall face.

Following the Coalbrook Colliery disaster in 1960, Salamon and Munro (1967) established the well known empirical coal pillar strength formula in South Africa. This formula has prevented further violent multiple pillar failures. In 1996, a back analysis of the collapsed and uncollapsed cases in Australia led to the development of the Australian empirical coal pillar strength formulae. The original collapsed and uncollapsed coal pillar database of Salamon and Munro (1967) was updated in 2006. This study introduced various strength formulae for different coalfields and seams in South Africa through back analyses of collapsed and uncollapsed cases. Today, the resultant pillar strength formulae from these previous studies and the behaviour of coal pillars are mostly well understood and applied with confidence. However, it was assumed in the previous studies that the behaviour of pillars is not time dependent; therefore, the formulae established do not provide an associated time to failure of coal pillars. This paper attempts to evaluate the so called 'Geometrical Limits' concept to provide the Australian coal mining industry with a tool to assess the long-term behaviour of bord and pillar workings where the pillars are prone to failure due to spalling of ribs. In order to achieve this outcome, the principles of the safety factor concept and the probability of failure calculated using the coal pillar strength formulae have also been evaluated and practical design examples are presented in this paper.

Natural Gas has been available in New Zealand for twenty years. During that time the gas share of the energy market has grown and now natural gas forms a significant part of New Zealand's energy scene, helping consumers to achieve a higher standard of living, and reducing dependence upon imported oil. Natural gas is now used for petrochemical manufacture and power generation in addition to direct supply to consumers. As concern for the environment continues to build, natural gas will have an increasingly important role to fill in these markets. This paper sets out the background to the development of natural gas in New Zealand and identifies the current markets. It then looks at those matters which are likely to influence the role of natural gas in the 1990s.

Much of the coal and gold mining industry of New Zealand is small scale. Funding is tight and mechanisation limited. The country has many well documented small coalfields (some with significant outcropping) and alluvial gold deposits. These are generally remote, difficult to access (physically and otherwise) and of submarginal value (largely a consequence of size when viewed for extraction by traditional techniques). The industry is also burdened by environmental and bureaucratic constraints. The above over simplified setting suggests to the Author, a newcomer to New Zealand, the opportunity to consider some novel concepts based on technology and techniques developed overseas or borrowed from other industry sectors. The objective being to make viable in economic and environmental terms projects that might otherwise be stillborn if considered for exploitation by conventional means. The paper mainly discusses 2 concepts focusing on the application of augers for exposed high wall or outcrop coal and micro-tunnelling augers for alluvial gold extraction. These may be considered high mobility 'container' (as in shipping container) packaged, or 'non invasive' mining systems. It is stressed that these are but concepts and have yet to be subjected to rigorous financial or engineering scrutiny. This could only follow their acceptance by, and input from, New Zealand miners. There will also be brief mention of a new modular conveyor system which might have application within the concepts or existing small scale mineral extraction operations and mention of a project currently in progress to apply tangible 'sustainability' to underground coal mining.

As the prices of metals slide, financial control of mineral processing operations becomes more and more important. Control of a mineral processing operation implies measurement of grades, recoveries and losses, with every effort being made to recover more product from the same feed. Shareholders become more concerned with the transparency of the operations and the corporate governance.There is only one way to achieve this and this is by sampling and making good use of the results of that sampling. Sampling systems that provide only 'rough' figures are not good enough. Similarly, a competitive position in the marketplace demands close control of product quality. Maximisation of product output demands that the product just meet the specification so that product yield is maximised. Decisions based on precise sampling results carry less risk that those based on imprecise results.This paper reports some recent advances in sampling theory that permit full quantification of sampling distributions, not just the sampling variance as has been possible in the past. These advances can be used together with simulation methods to tie down sampling precisions and develop calculations that quantify decision making risk when using the sampling results. A number of examples illustrate the use of the new advances and a final example indicates the development of risk analysis curves in the coupling of sampling precision to sale of a commodity.CITATION:Lyman, G J and Bourgeois, F S, 2015.  The Hellyer and Mt. Chalmers deposits are mound-style volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) deposits in Australia. Textural, petrographic and microthennometric investigations of fluid inclusions in the Hellyer stringer system indicate that Type I, primary, liquid-vapour inclusions are 10 - 15 J.UIl in size, and yield homogenisation temperatures of 170 - 220¦C in early 2A veins, 165 - 322¦C in main-stage 2B veins and 190 - 256¦C in late-stage 2C veins. These data suggest a waxing and waning thermal history. However, the average salinity remained between 8 - 11 NaCl equiv. wt % in all Stage 2 veins. At Mt Chalmers, Type I inclusions up to 20 urn are found in quartz from the mineralised zone, and these inclusions yielded homogenisation temperatures of 160 - 268¦C and salinities of 5 - 8 NaCl equiv. wt %. Laser Raman spectroscopic (LRS) analysis indicates the presence of CO2 (<1 mole %) in the Hellyer and Mt. Chalmers VHMS systems. Semi-quantitative SEM/WDS microprobe analyses of fluid inclusion decrepitates indicate that the Hellyer and Mt Chalmers ore fluids were enriched in potassium and calcium but depleted in magnesium relative to seawater. PIXE microanalysis of fluid inclusions in quartz also indicates a significant base metal concentration in these fluids. Cation composition and higher salinities relative to seawater suggest that recycled seawater alone cannot be the sole source of the ore fluids. High base metal content and the presence of CO2 in the fluid inclusions imply that magmatic input of ore metals during seawater leaching of the footwall volcanic pile is a distinct possibility.

investigations have been undertaken into the flow characteristics of mineral slurries from a number of Australian metallurgical plants including Mount Isa Mines Ltd., North Broken Hill Ltd., and Broken Hill South Ltd. Experimental equipment installed for this work included facilities for continuous recording of flow rate and pressure drop and detection of sedimentation.Although the method has subsequently been described in published literature, it is believed that the investigations included the original application of a method for correlation of the flow rate and pressure drop data. This method depends on solving by graphical methods the values of the constants k, and c in the relationship EQUATION 1 where D is pipe diameter; ?P, pressure drop; L, length; and V, mean linear velocity. Discussion of this correlation also reveals why sedimentation velocity does not necessarily vary greatly with pipe diameter.INTRODUCTIONIn order to design pumps and pipeline installations for a Newtonian fluid, measurements of the fluid's density and viscosity in any of a number of instruments are sufficient. Substitution of these values in well known equations to calculate Reynolds numbers and subsequent correlation to determine friction factors are all that is required for engineering specification.As a result of work during the last decade, particularly that of Metzner and Reed (1955) and Dodge and Metzner (1959), it is now possible to design for homogeneous non-Newtonian fluids using relatively simple instrumental measurements.These methods can sometimes be applied to thick slurries which behave as if homogeneous. Thermodynamic properties of the solutions of hydrogen in metals and carbon in austenite were investigated and it is possible to predict the interstitial solubility in these systems over relatively wide ranges of temperature and solute activity. Monte Carlo methods were used to compute the arrangements of interstitial atoms on the tetrahedral sites in body centred cubic metals and the octahedral sites in face centred cubic metals. It was shown that the non-configurational entropies of solution of hydrogen in metals can be interpreted as being principally vibrational and on this basis the potential value of the isotopic solubility ratio theory in indicating the compositional variation of these non-configurational entropies was discussed. The need for future work along these lines is pointed out.

In August 2001 the Minister for Conservation declined an application by GRD Macraes for an access arrangement to enable work at the Globe Progress Mine near Reefton. In her decision, Ms Lee said:æI have considered whether potential compensation and the proposed safeguards against some of the adverse effects are sufficient to outweigh my concerns as to the loss of conservation values, consistency with the objectives of the Conservation Act, the purposes for which the land is held by the Crown and, to a lesser extent, the North Westland Regional Management Plan. I do not think they are sufficient. To my mind, my concerns as to the consistency with the objectives of the Conservation Act, the purposes for which the land is held and the loss of some conservation values in particular, outweigh any potential compensation and possible mitigation of adverse effects.Æ Commenting on the MinisterÆs decision Guy Salmon of the Ecological Foundation stated that the Minister should have invited the applicant to provide a 10 000 hectare pest-free wildlife sanctuary as part of the æpriceÆ for obtaining that access. However,æfor many people of green persuasion, it has become fashionable to say no every timeàthose who really have the well-being of the environment at heart, will want to look carefully at the bigger picture of environmental restoration needsàThe deciding criterion: the mining company should show that its involvement on conservation land would produce a net conservation gain. That is a criterion that creates the right incentives for win-win-win solutions on conservation land.ÆThis paper considers whether the concept of off site mitigation is one which fits within the current legal regime. Two questions arise:Can such mitigation/compensation be legally considered in access arrangements or required as a condition of resource consents? Is this a realistic option for industry to be pursuing?

Deposits of the metalloids arsenic and antimony occur in quartz veins of mesothermal hydrothermalsystems in the South Island as arsenopyrite (AsFeS) and stibnite (Sb2S3). Arsenopyrite and stibnite occur in natural exposures in gold-mining areas, and additional arsenopyrite and stibnite have been exposed to the atmosphere by mining activity. At present the drinking water limits for dissolved As and Sb are 10 ppb and 3 ppb respectively. Sampling and analysis techniques are critical to determination of metalloid concentrations at these low levels. Endeavour Inlet in the Marlborough Sounds is an historic mining area (late 19th Century) with elevated As and Sb in waters emanating from mineralised rocks. Waters running out of abandoned adits have concentrations of As and/or Sb up to ppm levels. Natural waters have high Sb and low As, and the As levels increase markedly where anthropogenic activity has exposed rock. Changes in Sb/As ratio could potentially be used to quantify the anthropogenic component of metalloid mobility on mine sites on the 100-year time scale.
