IN isothermal sections of several ternary systems, the a-phase was found1 to extend in the form of a relatively narrow elongated field, connecting the U-phases that are present in the adjoining binary systems. This was interpreted in accordance with the conception that the U-phase is an electron compound and the ternary U-phase fields were shown in several systems' to extend approximately in the direction of constant average d-shell electron vacancy number per atom. Hundred-octane aviation gasoiine, toluene for T.N.T. production, high-quality lubricating oils for the needs of aviation and the armed forces, and synthetic chemicals for rubber manufacture again commanded the top priorities of the petroleum refining industry in 1944, the third year of America's active participation in the war. The objective continued to be to produce more and more of these materials—to keep up with increasingly greater requirements. By the end of the year all of the new installations projected before 1944, with the exception of possibly two or three that will tail over into January or February of 1945, had been completed and put into operation. And with the completion and putting into operation of these various units and the consequent lessening of construction responsibilities and problems, the industry was put into position to concentrate on the new operations and devote much more of its time and effort looking toward maximum output, both as to quantity and quality from the new facilities. Aviation Gasoline Making high-octane aviation gasoline continued to be the prime requisite of refining activities during 1944 as it was in the two previous war years, with the sights at the end of the year set to still higher figures than those which had been previously projected. About July I the daily output had been raised to 400,000 bbl., with some few large plant installations still to be completed and put into operation. Indications were that by December production would be up to all requirements, with good inventories. However, although by the end of the year the industry was turning out something over 500,000 bbl. a day, the estimated requirements of the armed services had been raised by a considerable figure, owing to the greatly increased aerial activities both in the European and Far Eastern combat areas. By the end of the year, therefore, the picture had changed, with the prospect for a much longer continuation of the European war, so that even with the completion and putting into operation in the United States by January 1945 of the last two or three 100-octane units authorized prior to 1944, it was evident it would be necessary to make still greater efforts to increase output of existing facilities to keep safely ahead of the game. Efforts of the industry and the Petroleum Administration for War as well as the Technical Advisory Committee and other research and development groups are concentrated therefore on methods and means of further augmenting the produc. tion of all existing refinery facilities engaged in making 100-octane aviation gasoline and components entering into it. The goal will be reached.

Onoda Cement Co., Tsukumi is one of the largest limestone producer in Japan. From mines called Suisho and Ganji, it supplies limestone for cement plant, lime manufacture, iron and steel industries and for many purposes. The Suisho mine is highly productive, though it's operations are governed by the utmost regard for its impact on the surrounding environment. However, it became difficult to meet additional expanding demand and to assure continuity of high rate production. Present production rate 1s 6 million tons per year. The Ganji mine, some 2 km south west of the Suisho mine, began first-stage development In mid- 1973 and in january I976 started production. The capacity of major facilities is 9 million tons per year. Full production is predicted in 1979. Mining and milling methods of these mines under strict environmental considerations are discussed.

I. Summary of General Features. Location.—The Clealum iron-ore deposits occur on Clealum river, a tributary of the Yakima river; in the eastern spurs of the Cascade range, Washington.† Mount Stuart, 9470 feet in altitude, is a dominant peak of the district, which will therefore be referred to as the Mount Stuart district. By way of the valley and cañon of the Clealum, the ores are 18 miles from Roslyn, the colliery-town, which is reached by a short branch from the Northern Pacific Railroad. Where they occur the valley has an elevation of 2900 to 8000 feet above sea; that of the end of the branch railroad at Ronald is 2345 feet. The grade of the valley from near Ronald to the junction of the Clealum and Salmon Lasac rivers, 144 miles, is 20 feet per mile; thence to the iron-ores it is 130 feet per mile, through a cañon 241/2 miles long. Abreast of the deposits the western wall of the valley is formed by precipices of sandstone; the eastern slope is comparatively gentle, being cut in easily eroded

If recent trends in the rotary drill market are indicative of future surface mining operating practice, then the move to scaled-up mining equipment by manufacturers may soon be over. Of the 48 different rotary drills currently produced by 12 manufacturers, over 60% were introduced within the past five years. By far, the new drills have been in the "small" class, capable of producing up to a 229-mm-diam (9-in.) blasthole with 222 kN (50,000 lb) or less of down pressure. New rotary drills in the "large" class, capable of producing a 311-mm-diam (12 1/4-in.) blasthole with up to 423 kN (95,000 lb) down pressure, have also been prominent. In the super-size category, new drills producing blasthole sizes to 444-mm-diam (17 1/2-in.) with up to 578 kN (130,000 lb) have been minimal.

The effect of added alloying elements on the solubility of nitrogen in a liquid alloy of 74 wt pct Fe. 18 wt pct Cr, and 8 wt pct Ni has been studied. At 1600°C and 1 atm nitrogen pressure, aluminum, chromium, columbium, manganese, molybdenum, tantalum, and vanadium increase the solubility of nitrogen in the liquid 18 Cr-8 Ni alloy, whereas additions of cobalt, copper, nickel, silicon, tin, and tungsten decrease the solubility. Interaction parameters based on a constant ratio of iron, chromium , and nickel have been used to quantitatively define the changes in nitrogen solubility. INVESTIGATIONS on the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron have usually treated the pure metal, and often the influence of a single added element. Pehlke and Elliott1 carried out a comprehensive study on the influence of alloying elements on nitrogen solubility in liquid iron, and compared their results with previous studies. Turnock and pehlke2 have recently reported a study on the solubility of nitrogen in multicomponent liquid iron alloys. The original interaction parameter proposed by wagner3 was successfully employed in these studies. The need for obtaining information on the gas solubility in more complex alloys is indicated by the increasingly significant role played by dissolved gases in the processing of iron-based materials. The commercial stainless steels, for example, represent an area where data on nitrogen solubilities are required as a function of composition, temperature, and gas pressure. The nitrogen solubility in liquid Fe-Cr-Ni alloys has been studied by Humbert and Elliott.4 Their investigation covered the entire ternary system, and attempted to use data from binary alloys to predict nitrogen contents in liquid ternary alloys. Langenberg,5 using a method developed by Morris and buehl,6 calculated the nitrogen solubilities in multicomponent iron alloys from data available on binary iron alloys at 1600°C. Nelson,7 using a regular-solution model, extended this prediction to include the effect of temperature. Chipman and corrigan8 and Turnock and pehlke2 also employed empirical methods to calculate nitrogen solubilities in liquid multicomponent iron alloys. In order to provide a basis for predicting nitrogen solubility in liquid stainless steels, and to extend the data available for thermochemically modeling systems of this type, the following investigation was carried out. The study involved measupements of nitrogen solubility in a nondilute alloy and examination of the influence of a small addition of an alloying element on the nitrogen solubility. The study was focused on a very narrow range Of composition in the vicinity of 18 wt pct Cr-8 wt pct Ni (herein referred to as 18-8) with special emphasis on the change of.nitrogen solubility with the addition of a fourth metallic element. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A Sieverts' apparatus, described previously,1,2 was used in this investigation. The charge materials were contained in a recrystallized alumina crucible and inductively melted. Additions were dropped from a glass side-arm. All materials were hydrogen-refined and vacuum-treated to eliminate or minimize the oxygen content. The source and purity of materials is given in Table I. The initial metallic charge was heated to approximately 1000°C and held under vacuum for 30 to 45 min as a means for removing hydrogen and adsorbed gases. Argon was used as the calibrating gas to determine the "hot volume". The average hot volume of the system was approximately 50 cu cm STP and a few experimental runs were made using a reaction bulb with a hot volume of 80 cu cm. The temperature range studied was from 1550° to 1700°C and the temperature was measured optically. THEORETICAL PRINCIPLES General Discussion. DURING The Two Years In Which The New Reduction-Works Of The Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co. Have Been In Operation At Douglas, Ariz., There Has Developed A Remarkable Condition In Regard To The Corrosive Action Of The Water Used To Cool The Jackets Of The Blast-Furnaces. Were It Not For The Many Contradictory Features, It Might Pass As One Of The Unavoidable Troubles Due To The Composition Of The Water. This Water, Obtained From Wells 600 Ft. Deep, Is Also Used In The Steam-Boilers, And Its Composition, As Shown By The Following Analysis, Does Not Indicate The Presence Of Any Ingredient Which Would Explain The Corrosion Grains Per U. S. Gal. Silica, 0.861 Iron Oxide And Alumina, 0.223 Calcium Carbonate, 0.2111 Calcium Sulphate, Magnesium Carbonate, Sodium And Potassium Sulphates, . 14.850 Sodium And Potassium Chlorides, 9.732 Sodium And Potassium Carbonate, 6.452 32.409 The Jackets Are Made Of Inner Plates 0.5 In. Thick And An Outer Plate I In. Thick, With 3-In. Stiffeners Between The Inner And Outer Plates. In From 10 To 12 Months The Inner Plates Have Been Reduced By Corrosion To A Thickness Of From 1/8 To 1/16 In., While The Outer Plate In The Same Time Is Reduced By Less Than 1/16 In., And The Stiffeners Show Very Little Corrosion. The Plates Are Pitted And Eaten Away In Some Places More Than In Others. There Is Practically No Scale Found On The Jackets, But When Cleaned Considerable Iron Oxide Is Found In The Bottoms. With An Action So Marked, Serious Trouble Would Be Expected In The Boilers, But, On The Contrary, A Recent Inspection By a

QUENCHED, bcc p brass, P1, transforms to a mar-tensitic phase, when it is cooled below room temperature.' This transformation can be followed using resistance measurements since the resistivity of the martensitic phase is considerably larger than that of the parent phase, Fig. 1.' phillips3 first reported that, when Cu-Zn alloys containing between 37.0 and 39.0 wt pct Zn were quenched from the 0 region to room temperature, variable amounts of a phase could be observed depending on the mode of quenching. If the quench occurs very rapidly, the a phase forms by a "massive transformation". The resultant phase has the same composition as the high-temperature P phase from which it was formed. If the quench is less severe, the alloy is retained largely in the p form; however, some a is formed by precipitation. In this case, a contains more copper than the high-temperature 0 phase from which it has formed. The a phase most probably does not undergo a transformation in the temperature range where p transforms to low-temperature martensite. This can be deduced from the Eesistivity-temperature relation which is linear in this temperature range, Fig. 2. The stable a phase which is present along with R. E.
