Mineral production in Fiji, a group of 322 volcanic islands and atolls of Melanesia in the southern Pacific Ocean, continued to be dominated by gold. However, the Fijian mineral sector remained a minor factor as a source of export earnings, Government revenues, and employment, generating only 1% of the gross domestic product (GDP), estimated as $1.2 billion.2 The largest and most important mining operation was the Vatukoula gold mine on the north side of Viti Levu, the main island. The Vatukoula Mine has been in prduction since 1932, producing about 3.8 million troy ounces of gold and 1.3 million troy ounces of silver to date. In April 1983, the large Australian mining firm, Western Mining Corp. (WMC), assumed operation of the mine in a joint venture with Emperor Gold Mining Co. Ltd., which operated the mine previously. The WMC takeover of the mine management was expected to bring in additional capital and technological expertise in order to modernize operations, increasing both efficiency and output. During the year, rate of recovery was only about 75% of the gold contained in the ore and only 40% of the contained silver. Mining at the Vatukoula Mine was done using bath opencut and underground methods, with about 60% of the ore mined attributed to the underground operations.

Detailed mineralogical investigation of a tailing sample from the Juno plant circuit at Tennant Creek was carried out to determine the nature of the unrecovered bismuth and whether any possibility existed for improving bismuth recovery. The investigation showed that the Ibismuth was present in a complex mixture of Bi-Pb-Ou-Se-S minerals (termed "bismuthinite"), of which about 74 per cent was locked (mainly with magnetite) and 26 per cent was liberated (18 per cent in the minus 7 µm slime). The results suggested that attention should be directed to both finer grinding and improved flotation of slime "bismuthinite", and testwork carried out by Peko Mines N.L. on the basis of these recommendations led to a significant improvement in bismuth recovery.Detailed mineralogical investigation of two Juno concentrates was carried out to determine the nature of the selenium present and whether any possibility existed for improving the selenium grade. The investigation indicated that virtqally all the bismuth, selenium, and lead was present in "bismuthinite", which showed a composition range of 32-82 per cent Bi, 0-42 per cent Pb, 0-24 per cent Se, and 5-18 per cent S. Differences in the Bi/Se ratios of the two concentrates could be attributed to different average Bi/Se ratios of the constituent "bismuthinite", and the relatively low selenium grade of the "bismuthinite" precluded the possibility of obtaining a high grade selenium concentrate with high selenium recovery.However, differential flotation and/or low intensity magnetic separation to remove chakopyrite, and magnetite, the main diluents of the concentrate, could be expected to upgrade the selenium content byup to 80 per cent (relative) and .festwork carried out by Peko Mines N.L. on the basis of the recommendations of the mineralogical investigation confirmed that depression of chalcopyrite in the flotation circuit could produce significantly improved selenium grades.These investigations illustrate the application of mineralogy to the practical problems of improving plant performance. Mineralogy has an important role to play in providing quantitative data on which the metallurgist can evaluate plant performance and base a programme of metallurgical testwork, and early mineralogical investigation of feeds, concentrates, middlings, and tailings can lead to the avoidance of much abortive and expensive metallurgical testwork.

"This paper suggests that with the settlement of long-term contracts of fifteen years' duration, with prospects of extension, the coal mining industry has, for the first time, a complete commercial justification for large-scale planning.The labour costs of coal production over past years are analyzed and, with the acceptance of the premise that the basic shift rates are certain to rise in the years to come, the paper suggests that forward planning should provide &r capital investment to make a traditionally labour-dense industry into a capital-dense industry.Automated methods of manpower deployment and timekeeping and the monitoring of all equipment back to a central control point are discussed as ail-important means of obtaining maximum utilization of high-cost capital investment.Principles of payment of the work-force, and the utilization of equipment 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the maximum number of days a year, are dealt with as means of achieving maximum capital utilization. Some of the new technical underground and coal preparation problems which will undoubtedly result from the concentration of workings and maximum machine utilization are discussed, and the author makes suggestions as to how these might be solved.In short, the author predicts that if the coal mining industry is prepared to recognize the problems and invest in modern equipment backed by highly trained staff. then the outcome will justify the high capital investment involved. He stresses the importance of human communications in achieving this end."

Facts obtained by the Bureau of Mines on the dust-explosion hazard in air of materials used in the plastics industry are presented for 313 samples studied in the laboratory. Information is given on ignition temperature of dust clouds and layers, minimum explosive concentration, minimum energy required for ignition, explosion pressure and rates of pressure rise, amount of inert dust required to prevent ignition and flame propagation, and, in some instances, on the limiting oxygen concentration in an atmosphere to prevent ignition by spark and by heated surface. The effects of particle shape, additives, and resin structure on explosibility are discussed. Relative explosibility of the materials is related to the ignition sensitivity and explosion severity and is denoted by an empirical index. Recognition of the degree of hazard will facilitate adoption of adequate measures for preventing ignition and explosion during manufacturing or processing.

Bulk materials handling systems are extensively used in the mining and minerals industry, where a fairly high incidence of structural failure is experienced, notwithstanding design compliance with appropriate standards. A number of case studies are explored to demonstrate how insufficient controls or protection systems have contributed to structural failures on mobile bulk handling equipment. The importance of design integration across engineering disciplines is highlighted. The revision of ISO 5049-1 (1994) is proposed to provide specific rules and guidelines pertaining to machine protection systems. It is further recommended that the structural design engineer of the original equipment manufacturer(OEM) fulfils a more prominent role during the final acceptance and handover of mobile bulk handling equipment, with specific reference to protection systems.

The McArthur lead-zinc-silver deposit is of the stratiform type. It consists of a mineralised bituminous shale sequence containing some tuffites, numerous graded beds and isolated slump breccia horizons. The principal sulfides; pyrite, sphalerite and galena, are essentially restricted to the shales and the genetically unrelated turbidites contain only minor mineralisation. The geochemistry of the deposit has been investigated with respect to the stratigraphic column and mineralogy of the sediments. A sedimentary origin is advocated for the deposit. Volcanism, thermal spring activity and high salinities, perhaps related to the Emu Fault, are considered as contributing factors to ore genesis. The metallurgy of this deposit is discussed in relation to its geologic history.

There is now a new generation of mobile crushing and screening plant systems available which have been developed based on the motivation of reducing truck haulage. Newly designed mobile crushing and screening plant systems have the advantages of mobility, flexibility, economy and reliable performance, making this system very appealing for small- to medium-sized projects or projects where a number of resources are separated by distance.A brief review of the past history and experience with transportable crushing plants provides an insight into some of the issues with transportable plants in mineral processing. A closer look at a simple model based on exploiting small but high-grade orebodies suggests the concept has merit, however there are many more engineering, logistics, legal, technical and management aspects which have limited the application of such a concept in the resource sector. This paper explores the concept in detail and endeavours to analyse the preferred commodities and scenarios under which the concept could be used and the economic and logistical limitations for iron ore. The paper also looks at the risk assessment criteria to be applied in selecting the type of resource projects where the model could be applied successfully. Other aspects considered in this paper are the project planning requirements, technical and economic feasibility, bankability and operability. Reference is made to the operating experience of contractors at a number of sites and feedback from the resource companies as managers of the projects.CITATION:Connelly, D, 2013. The approximately 2800 Ma old Ventersdorp Contact Reef is a unique Witwatersrand orebody, from which about 6% of the world?s gold production is derived. A major portion of this production is mined at depths exceeding 2500 m and deepest levels of mining are at about 3600 m. The orebody?s hangingwall consists of volcanic rocks. This differs from the older Witwatersrand orebodies, which have quartzitic hangingwalls. The thickness of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef is generally about 1.20 m, but is highly variable, at an average dip of about 18°. A pronounced unconformity beneath this orebody is also expressed by varying footwall rock type characteristics and frequent rolling of the reef plane. These rolls follow topographic variations of the palaeo-surface. More geological than rock mechanics studies were performed on the Ventersdorp Contact Reef prior to 1992. Recently, however, a multidisciplinary team comprising various rock engineering and geological disciplines has delineated geotechnical areas by a novel technique. Geotechnical areas are defined by distinct footwall/hangingwall rock assemblages. The presence of three footwall and two hangingwall rock types results in the definition of six geotechnical areas across a distance exceeding 60 km, including about 10 gold mines. Distinct rock mass behaviour has been documented in three of the six geotechnically defined areas. Different rock mass behaviour is expressed by features such as mining-induced fracturing, closure rates, fall of ground characteristics and seismic character. Some geological features override the rock mass behaviour as defined for the individual geotechnical areas. These are undulations of the orebody or the frequency, characteristics and attitude of major discontinuities. It is concluded that the concept of geotechnically subdividing orebodies is not only important for facies delineation and the associated grade, but also needs to be considered for safety aspects, in determining factors such as the appropriate support to be employed.

An integrated palynological and sedimentological investigation of four wells from the eastern margin of the Gippsland Basin has resulted in a scheme for classification of palynofacies in this area. Thirteen different palynofacies assemblages are recognised and assigned to particular environments based on the enclosing sediments, which range from alluvial, through coastal barrier to continental shelf environments. Close correlation is observed between the interpreted energy regime of the palynofacies assemblage, and that of the enclosing sediments. Assemblages characterised as reworking surfaces can be correlated with unconformity producing events (ie tectonic activity associated with the opening of the Tasman Sea), and some of the minor eustatic sea level Changes.

"Gowest Gold Ltd. is in the process of developing the Frankfield East gold deposit located along the largely undeveloped Pipestone fault northeast of Timmins, Ontario. In addition to resource development and environmental permitting work the company has had an ongoing program of metallurgical and engineering studies aimed at evaluating options for processing the Frankfield East ore. Mineralization at the Frankfield project contains arsenopyrite and pyrite as the major sulphide minerals. Bulk flotation of all sulphides results in extremely high gold recovery. However, the gold is almost entirely associated with the arsenopyrite fraction of the ore and is refractory in nature requiring preoxidation treatment. Selective flotation was investigated to recover a gold-arsenopyrite concentrate thereby reducing the mass which would be subjected to further gold processing. As part of this work, a pyrite concentrate low in arsenic content was also recovered that would be suitable as a source of sulphur for a smelter (or other pyrometallurgical facility). Production of separate arsenopyrite and pyrite concentrates is frequently examined but rarely adopted due to the distribution of gold between the two products or the inability to achieve adequate separation. Several flowsheet options were investigated in the study. The best results were achieved following a sequential flotation flowsheet. The flowsheet configuration was key to meeting the targets for the two products. In this paper, the various options investigated are reviewed and the results of the final flowsheet are presented. The overall plan by Gowest was to evaluate all process options to bring the Frankfield East deposit into production. The ability to effectively separate the arsenopyrite and pyrite components in the ore provides Gowest with added opportunities to pursue both short and long term production scenarios."

Legislation and Government Programs.-The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) accepted written comments until July 23, 1976, and held an informal hearing on August 24, 1976, to receive oral testimony regarding an economic and inflation impact statement prepared by OSHA on the proposed standard for occupational exposure to inorganic arsenic. These written and oral submissions were to be used in conjunction with information supplied at 1975 hearings to promulgate emission standards. An in-depth study for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) assembled and interpreted comprehensive information on arsenic and its compounds and the effects of these substances on people, animals, and plants.2 Another study for EPA assessed the role of arsenic and its compounds in the environment and in the economy of the United States and evaluated the need for and the projected effect of controlling its production, use, dissipation, and emission.3

"The Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited, a government of India enterprise, has constructed iron ore mining, crushing, handling and concentrator facilities at Kudremukh, in southwest India. Concentrate produced is pumped 65 km to dewatering, storage and ship-loading facilities which were built at the same time at the sea port of Mangalore.A computer-based distributed process control system was implemented for all operations at Kudremukh and to interface with and monitor the Mangalore plant.The control system is examined from various standpoints, beginning with a description of its architecture, method of process input/output connection, and major hardware items.Software considerations and process applications are then looked at, with a review of the integration of the computer vendor's system software with user-developed applications programming. A control example of crusher operations is provided.Following the descriptive segment is a discussion of the design considerations and decision factors involved in the implementation of such a system considering the type of process and the remote nature of the installation site. It ends with a review of actual operating experience and conclusions regarding both this system and future similar applications.ScopeThe following is a discussion of the computer-based process control system applied for the Kudremukh Iron are Company Limited's ore handling, concentrating and shipping facilities located in South India.A general description of the process and plant equipment will be followed by an examination of the control system from the points of view of hardware and signal flow, software requirements, design considerations, implementation logistics and operating experience. The South East Transit Project is a $520 million project in Brisbane, Australia which includes the construction of a 32 km Busway to access the south-eastern suburbs. Close to the centre of Brisbane, tunneling techniques have been used to minimise surface disruption. This paper describes some of the features of the longest driven tunnel on the project, the Vulture Street Tunnel. The Busway is a two lane expressway for buses which requires a 10.2 m finished width and a 12.6 m excavated span of driven tunnel. The Vulture Street Tunnel carries the Busway at minimal cover beneath the operating Vulture Street Railway Station, beneath a three storey office building and beneath the roadway to the Mater Hill Busway station. Halfway along the route, a Y-junction has been constructed to enable future connection with a light rail route. Key features in the design and construction of the Vulture Street Tunnel include: Use of canopy tubes to drive a 12 m wide tunnel beneath operating railway tracks with less than two metres of cover in highly weathered rock. Underpinning the office building in the route of the tunnel construction from within the building carpark. Construction of a 24 m span Y-junction with 7 metres cover of weathered and faulted rock. Use of predictive analysis as an adjunct to traditional back analysis to estimate the tunnel settlements from pressuremeter test results. This paper describes the design methodology with particular reference to settlement prediction, as well as construction innovations used to complete the tunnel. This paper will be of interest to all designers who have to create large spans in minimal cover in weak rock in urban areas and who have to predict the settlement

"IntroductionSteel Core Piles are used extensively in Scandinavian countries, where hard rock is found within reasonable depths. A steel core is cast into a drilled steel tube casing and a rock hole is extended below the casing. This pile type is considered a very reliable type of pile, and for urban environment it has several advantages compared to other types of piles. One critical phase of the installation is the drilling of the casing. Usually a DTH (Down The Hole) hammer is used. Drilling in fine grained soils, e g silt, below the ground water level, may give rise to an excessive volume of soil material flushed up from the point of the casing, resulting in unacceptable settlements around the pile installation area.Using a new method for drilling of the casings, the ELEMEX-method has proven to significantly reduce the risk for such problems. In the paper a case record from a ground improvement project in central Stockholm is described. Ground settlements around the drilling area were carefully monitored over a longer period. Both the new drilling method and the conventional DTH casing drilling method where used, so that the corresponding ground settlements could be compared. Settlement records and comments are included in the paper.The paper also gives a description of the project. The installation of new piles and foundation constructions cover a whole city block in Stockholm downtown. The reason for the replacement of the old, damaged wooden piles were due to their destruction caused by a long time lowering of the ground water table. Development of the Batu Hijau copper project was completed in the fourth quarter of 1999 with the formal handover and start-up of ore processing facilities. The project began in August 1996 when the owner, PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT), awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC)contract to Fluor Daniel (FD) for the development of the project. This included a copper concentrator, port, power plant, town site and infrastructure. PTNNT managed the development of the mine and the procurement of the mine equipment. In 1996, Batu Hijau was the largest mining project ever undertaken. Developing the Batu Hijau Mine was complex. It involved the work of thousands of people in all parts of the world to plan, engineer, procure, fabricate and manufacture equipment, supply and deliver materials and equipment, and build the plant.

The City of Atlanta Water Department required the construction of a two sludge tanks and a wet well at the existing Chattahoochee Water Treatment Plant. Western Summit won a design build contract to build the project and proceeded to evaluate the wet well size options, and construction procedures. The final design required the construction of a 1 million gallon tank. The proximity of the underground tank to adjacent roads and existing plant structures ruled out laying back the excavation. As a result a tied back sheet pile retaining wall was initially proposed.

This Bureau of Mines report reviews the information presented at the Sixth Mineral Waste Utilization Symposium cosponsored by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, and the IIT Research Institute. Environmental scientists and engineers from nine countries participated in the symposium, which was held May 2-3, 1978, at the Chicago campus of IIT Research Institute. The 56 papers presented on the reclamation and recycling of mining and mineral wastes, municipal solid waste, industrial wastes, and scrap metal are summarized herein.

Control of the particle size distribution of a muckpile after blasting is always an important subject for mining industry. Blasting has a significant impact on downstream processes such as loading, crushing and grinding. Improvement of blasting results provides increase in loader and excavator productivity due to increased diggability capacity, and increased bucket and truck fill factors. Suitable and uniform particle size distribution results increase in crusher and mill throughput and decrease in energy consumption in size reduction process. Digital image analysis technique has been used for many years in mining industry in order to determine blast fragmentation. The images of muckpile surface can be used to determine the mean fragment size (x50). The source of digital images can also be haul truck, leach pile, waste dump, stockpile, and conveyor belt. The screening that is conventional method to measure blast fragmentation is time consuming and expensive. Digital image analysis is a cost effective and faster method (1).

In a previous paper the writer dealt -with the jasper bar formations and their relationship to the structural geology of older pre-Cambrian rocks in the goldfields districts of Western Australia (24). He has pointed out in this ahd other papers that jasper bars, or banded iron formations, banded hematite or ,magnetite quartzites, jaspilites and related banded ferruginous or non-ferruginous cherts, occur in abundan'ce in the Older Greenstone Series of Western Australia (22), (24), (26). They are considered to represent special forms of banded ferruginous sediments, and are usually fpund in the field interbedded with more or less metamorphosed pasaltic 01' andesitic lavas and tuffs, now amphibolites, together with occasional thin bands of normal pelitic sediments, which go to make up a large proportion of the Older Greenstones in thfs State (26).Great thicknesses of fiat-bedded ]:landed ferruginous cherts are also found associated with cherty' carbonate rocks; quartzites, shales and thin-bedded dolomite whicIi constit'ute the Nullagine (Pl'oterozoic) system in the northwest of Western Australia. In the Hamersley Range district these banded ferruginous chert beds are the hosts of important deposits of blue amphibole asbestos.In the paper mentioned above brief reference was> made to the importance, of geological structure in relation to economic geology, particularly in the goldfields regions of Western Australia, and it was shown that jasper bars may have an important role in the study of 'the structural geology of many of these regions. Of possibly more immediate economic importance is the part that these rocks play, both directly and indirectly, as host rocks for mineral deposits-the chief of Which are gold, iron ores, blue asbestos, and manganese ores. The blue asbestos bearing banded iron formations mentioned above are confined to the younger pre-Cambrian Nullagine formations. They have been described in detail elsewhere (23). In this paper it is proposed to discuss the economic geology of the jasper bars found in the older pre-Cambrian series.The jasper 'bars have in themselves little or no intrinsic value except perhaps some of the more highly coloured and banded varieties which may be utilised for ornamental and decorative purposes. Probably the best known of such varieties is the so-called "marble bar;" a belt of, strikingly coloured banded chert occurring just south and west of the famous town of that name (see Fig. 1t). This consists of a hard, very fine, even-grained rock with alternate individual stripes varying from the thickness of a sheet of paper up to an inch or more in width, and ranging in colour from clear white to yellow, from various shades of pink to brilliant...
