The legislation for the disposal of heavy metals contaminated substances is still going to be tightened up in the future. The main criteria for the utilization or deposition of these residues are the content and the water solubility of these metals. Through this, the use of slags from the lead-and zinc-industry in road building may become limited or even not possible at all. From an economic point of view this would lead to Pb/Zn losses and costs for safe dumping. This paper investigates the feeding of the reducing agent via hollow electrode DC smelting and the yield of metal reduction. After carrying out thermodynamic calculations, the process window conditions for electric-arc furnace tests were determined. Doing this, the zinc could be reduced, evaporated and recovered as an oxidic intermediate product flue dust, while the lead was present either in flue dust or in metallic form. The zinc content in the final slag could be reduced by up to 90%. The slag product has undergone an eluation test which allows it to be used as building materials. This system is simple, inexpensive, and provides the major economic benefits available from contemporary automatic control technology.Value Analysis of Grinding OperationsValue analysis (or engineering, or management), originally developed by Lawrence D. Miles of the General Electric Company (1), focuses on the identification of value (product or process worth versus cost) and provides a systematic procedure for its improvement. A recent research and development project involving the application of the principles of value engineering to grinding operations has provided a basic technoeconomic model of grinding processes (2). The functional objectives of the ball milling process and the means to achieve value based grinding circuit control originate from this study.The Need for Grinding Circuit ControlThe economic effectiveness of a process is determined by the quality or value of the product and the related processing costs. If the inputs (both the raw feed and the applied processing work) are absolutely constant, the product characteristics and the process efficiency will be determined only by the engineering design. The need for and degree of process control is therefore determined by the nature of variations or upsets in the process inputs, and the extent to which these effect product value and operating costs."

The paper describes the construction of 5 plugs to resist high water heads at depth within the South Deep Gold Mine, Randfontein, South Africa. A total of 20 segments were involved to create these plugs, which were 7.5 m long at the 58 Level and 6.25 m long at the50 Level. Emphasis is placed on the QA/QC and verification methods, which were developed and governed all phases of the work, from initial rock preparation and pregrouting through to the final grout tightening of the rock/plug interface and the surrounding rock. This paper is one in a series of papers detailing other aspects of the project, which was constructed largely between May 2001 and August 2003.

Benchmarking is a business management process that seeks improvement through the study and reapplication of practices conducted by industry leaders. This discussion presents objectives and organization of benchmarking applied to mining geomechanics. Similar procedures have been successfully applied to mining companies, laboratories, and research organizations involved in mining geomechanics throughout the world. Benchmarking is a structured process that allows an organization to learn from the "best" in the field. The objectives of benchmarking vary depending on the company's targeted areas for improvements. Typical goals include ground control cost reduction, enhanced safety, optimization of geotechnical staffing, development of state-of-the-art design procedures, or the adoption of the "best in the field" geotechnical data management. Once the objective of the study is established and the practices and procedures to be benchmarked are identified, a benchmarking team is formed from internal and outside specialists. Benchmarking in geomechanics is fundamentally different than in most other fields because of the effects of local geologic conditions and regulations, both of which must be understood by all on the benchmarking team, before a comparative analysis can be made.

Determination of optimal blast parameters have been the priority act for blasters on the field due to financial and technical properties of the operation. Therefore many researchs were done to establish a general formula for many years. These intends could reach some empirical and numerical design frames consisting the rock, geology and explosives properties. Blasting parameters have to be adjusted according to the desired fragmentation rate especially on the mines where particle size distrubition after blasting has a great importance. Therefore the blast designs have to be evaluated considering the particle size distribution after the blasts. The Kuz-Ram model which was modified by Cunningham is one of the tools for estimating the particle size. Although it doesn’t give an accurate result, it can be very succesful on modifying the blasting design parameters by establishing a back correlation between the blasting parameters and the exact particle size distribution results which can be easily achieved by digital image processing system. Within the scope of this study, the particle size distribution after blasting was assessed by Split-Desktop digital image processing system and bench blasting parameters were studied considering the desired particle size distribution at Espey colemanite mine using Kuz-Ram and digital image processing system combination to determine the specific blasting parameters for this site.

Roof support technology for longwall tailgates has changed dramatically during the past decade. Filling tailgates with conventional wood cribs is becoming the exception rather than the rule. Modern engineered timber support systems and a host of other alternative support products provide far greater capacity as well as stiffer response, thereby allowing the supports to resist roof movement with much less displacement than the soft wood cribbing used in the past. For these reasons, these products can provide superior roof control. In addition, the material handling requirements for support installation have now become a major consideration in the support design and selection process. Products such as conventional wood cribbing that require piece-meal construction of bulky, heavy components have diminished, while prop-type supports and products that can be installed with machinery and pumpable support technologies have grown in use resulting in fewer injuries to mine workers. Now, the opportunity exists to provide the safest, most cost effective support system, through engineering design rather than by trial and error and to optimize the use of the support system chosen. Yet this is rarely done. The key to accomplishing this task is to understand the interaction of the support system with the ground conditions at the installation site. A major focus of the paper is to conceptualize the support and interaction through the use of a ground reaction curve which relates the support resistance to the convergence of the longwall tailgate. The goal of any roof support design is to control the ground deformations and maintain the structural integrity of damaged or broken ground to the extent possible to provide a stable mine opening. In general, deformations will be a function of the stress environment and inherent strength of the surrounding rock mass. However, if the deformations are intimately linked to the stress changes such that the deformation can be controlled by the load resistance or reinforcement provided by a roof support system, then the loading behavior can be described as load-controlled. Conversely, if the deformation occurs irrespective of the installed support (assuming practical limitations), then the loading behavior is described as displacement-controlled. In this case, the deformation can be considered irresistible from a practical standpoint. In this context, the nature of the loading has significant consequences on the support design requirements. Finally, examples using the NIOSH Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP) to develop design criteria using ground reaction data from underground studies and ways to include uncontrolled convergence as part of the design criteria for standing roof supports will also be discussed.

Four hydraulic top hammers, one pneumatic top hammer, and three down-the-hole drills were observed in several rock types at quarries and highway construction sites to measure the performance data. At the same time, drill cuttings from each drill hole were collected for the determination of the coarseness index (CI), which is the sum of cumulative weight percentages of a particular size-graded sample of debris, and for the determination of median particle size (MPS), which is defined as the particle for which the quantity of particles equals 50% of the total of the cumulative distribution. After the sieve analysis was carried out on the drill cuttings in the laboratory, CI values were calculated and MPS values were obtained from the plots of cumulative undersize vs particle size. The performance data of the drills, CI values, and MPS values were analyzed using the least square regression method. It was seen that strong linear relationships usually exist between penetration rates and CI values, and penetration rates and MPS values for both top hammer drills and down-the-hole drills. Penetration rates increase linearly when increasing the CI and MPS values.

"The Linear Wear Theory provides a reliable framework for the assessment of grinding media performance at full scale. This theory can be applied for analyzing grinding media consumption rates in any given grinding operation as well as the evaluation of alternative grinding media products, based on actual operational data, correcting for conditions like ore hardness, feed and product sizes, mill power and circuit throughput; all of them unrelated to the grinding media intrinsic quality attributes. A series of Moly-Cop Tools 3.0 applications have been developed to facilitate the calculations involved. Moly-Cop Tools 3.0 is available, free of charge, to all interested parties through the corresponding author.INTRODUCTION Mineral grinding circuit operators recognize the significance of grinding media (balls) consumption on the cost structure of any full scale grinding facility. The effective cost associated with this essential consumable depends on two factors: delivered price and durability (quality) of the grinding media. When evaluating alternative grinding media varieties, there is a well accepted evaluation criterion by which a given media type is considered to be “cost-effective” when its unit application cost – normally expressed in $/ton of ore ground – is shown to be lower than that of a nominal reference condition: Grinding Media Cost = Ball Price x Ball Consumption (1) ($ /ton ground) ($/ton balls) (ton balls/ton ground) Under this criterion, an alternative, higher-price grinding media product could be “cost-effective” if its associated consumption rate is sufficiently lower than the reference media, enough to yield a lower grinding cost, as dictated by Equation 1. For the proper application of the above criterion, evaluators must rely on representative indicators of grinding media quality, ideally independent of most mill operating conditions. In each particular case, ball price is always a known component; however, it is not so evident how media performance (quality) differences amongst alternative product types could be assessed with a reasonable degree of accuracy and precision."

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Eng) (Chemical) degree This paper details the formulation of a mathematical model for the simulation of a primary bioleach reactor, with specific reference to the leaching of pyrite. The model is based on the direct reaction mechanism, where the leaching of pyrite is said to occur via a two-step process. The process involves the formation of ferrous?iron through the chemical leaching of pyrite and subsequent bacterial oxidation of ferrous-iron back into ferric-iron. At steady state the rate of chemical leaching and bacterial oxidation are linked by the ratio of ferrous-iron to ferric-iron in solution. The extent of conversion of pyrite in the reactor system is described using the segregated flow model, with the exit age distribution of the solid phase being described by the Tanks-in-Series model. The final phase in model formulation involves the inclusion of steady state material balances on the bacteria and fluid phase components. The model is compared to pilot plant data and laboratory data for two different types of pyrite concentrates, with simulation results showing that the model is in good agreement with the data. The Rogan-Mallery tin property is in the foothills on the south slope of the Tehachapi Mountains, Kern County, Calif. It was first visited by the senior author in August 1942, and exploration by means of trenching and diamond drilling began in May 1944 and was concluded in August of the same year. Cassiterite, associated with iron-rich gossan, occurs in a limestone roof pendant at places near or at its contact with the underlying granitic rocks. The cassiterite grain sizes range from 20 mesh to 150 mesh. Surface and diamond-drill samples showed tin ranging from traces up to 122.6 pounds per ton. Exploration by the Bureau of Mines included 2,100 cubic yards of trenching and the drilling of 11 diamond drill holes totaling 1,000 feet. Dana Hogan, president of the Rogan Petroleum Co. of Los Angeles, Calif.) brought these projects to the attention of the Bureau of Mines in July 1942, and the following month a Bureau engineer made a preliminary examination in company with Hillard Mallery, of 408 Ruby Street, Redondo Beach, Calif., the man who discovered them.

The Xietongmen deposit is located 350 km west of Lhasa, Tibet. It is a new, high-grade porphyry copper-gold discovery and the first deposit to be systematically explored by a western company in southern Tibet. In 2005, Continental Minerals Corporation drilled 21,332 m of core in 63 holes and demonstrated excellent lateral and vertical continuity of high-grade copper-gold mineralization over an area 750 m by up to 350 m in size which remains open in all lateral directions. Drill intersections repeatedly yield grades >1% Cu equivalent (based on gold and copper prices) and include 308.5 m at 0.87% Cu and 1.25 g/T Au (1.60 CuEQ%), and 315.6 metres at 0.61% Cu and 1.11 g/T Au (1.26 CuEQ%). Extensive drilling in 2006 will expand and delineate the deposit, and metallurgical, engineering, environmental and socio-economic evaluations will begin. Xietongmen is hosted by volcanic and intrusive rocks of the Gangdese belt, a magmatic arc active between 120 and 30 Ma along the southern margin of Eurasia. Pervasive alteration is dominated by a well-mineralized K-feldspar and biotite assemblage, and by a more peripheral sericitic assemblage also with strong chalcopyrite. Major vein stages include chalcopyrite-bearing quartz, biotite, magnetite and pyrite-pyrrhotite types.

An important consideration in any mining operation is waste disposal management. Tailings management at Macraes gold mine allows for the disposal of tailings into fully engineered embankment dams and overburden material to be incorporated as construction material into those embankment dams. This paper outlines the current tailings management practices.

As mine haulage vehicles become larger, the danger to a driver during a fire emergency is increased by the greater height of the cab above ground. Also, property damage due to fires on bigger trucks can be substantial. To solve this problem, the Department of Interior&apos;s Bureau of Mines, through two research and development contracts with FMC Corporation, San Jose, California, has developed two reasonably priced, reliable automatic fire sensing and suppression prototype systems for large haulage vehicles. At the onset of the large mobile equipment fire protection contract effort, it was learned that fires were frequently experienced in open-pit mine haulage equipment, especially large trucks. As the size of equipment has grown, so has the hazard presented to an operator forced to leave his truck in a hurry when fire breaks out and his normal path to the ground is blocked by flames. His only recourse is to jump from the cab platform to the ground, and the one-story drop of 10 feet or more can severely injure him. It is with these factors in mind that a program was undertaken to provide a fire detection and extinguishing capability tor the large mobile equipment, especially trucks, used in open pit mines.

An Automated People Mover (APM) transit system is planned for the growing Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The APM will improve passenger movements between the terminals, and provide a link to parking facilities, a new rental car facility, and the planned metro Light Rail. The underground works will include shallow twin bored tunnels, taxiway crossings, and underground stations constructed beneath critical airport facilities. Challenging soft ground conditions will require extensive underpinning and ground improvements. Design is underway, and construction is scheduled to begin in 2007 with project completion in 2015. The owner’s planned delivery method for the APM Project will be Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) with a Guaranteed Maximum Price.
