The theme of this Conference is 'The Future of Mining in New Zealand' to be addressed at a time of deepening economic concern. To ensure the assessment and development of our mineral resources in a competitive, safe and environmentally acceptable way a modest supply of a rare commodity û the professional mining engineer û must be assured. This paper briefly' reviews the history of mining education in New Zealand, discusses relevant overseas academic concerns and actions and discusses recent local trends which have led to a most serious recruitment position in the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Auckland. Conclusions are drawn and proposals made which may remedy this situation which could have serious economic and sociological consequences for New Zealand.

The Haile mine has been the outstanding gold-mining operation and the largest single producer of gold in the Appalachian region. Gold was discovered at the Haile in 1827, previous to the present operation, production has been nearly $4,500,000 (gold at $20.67 per ounce.) from somewhat over a million tons of ore, with an average extraction of about 70 percent. The Haile property, now operated by Haile Gold Mines, Inc., is in the southern part of Lancaster County, South Carolina, 3-1/2 miles northeast of the town of Kershaw and 55 miles north of Columbia, the State capital. (See fig. 1.) The corporation has a lease and purchase contract on 1,805 acres, covering the present productive area. In addition, it holds lease contracts on 1,500 acres additional adjacent to this area.

The Bond grindability testing procedure has been standardized to measure the same grindability values, i.e. Bond work index (BWi), for the same ore when tests are performed in different laboratories or by different operators. This is accomplished by the standardization of mill dimensions, tumbling speed, grinding ball charge weight and distribution, sample ore charge weight in the mill and operating practice. The results of this investigation reveal that the Bond work index grindability values may differ substantially with different standard Bond ball mills. This paper will review the results.

According to Lindgren , the economic importance of pegmatites stems from the fact that they represent the principal natural storehouse of two classes of mineral products : (1 ) common minerals in exceptional size and purity and ( 2 ) several of the rarest minerals , which are not commercially available from other types of deposits . Most pegmatites can be described simply as coarse- to very coarsegrained granites . Pegmatite includes coarse -textured igneous rocks of any composition , such as syenitic , alkali syenitic , dioritic , or gabbroitic ; but basic pegmatites are far less common than those that are associated with acid rocks and correspond approximately to the mineral composition of ordinary granite . Moreover , only a very few basic pegmatites can be considered as economic sources of useful minerals . Whereas , in ordinary granitic rocks the individual minerals usually measure 1/8 to 1/4 inch across , in pegmatites they are characteristically over 1 inch and often more than 12 inches in diameter . Although some of the constituents of the pegmatite may be only a fraction of an inch in length , single crystals more than 10 feet long are by no means unusual , and some crystals are enormous . A whole quarry was operated in the Urals within a single crystal of feldspar . Huge quartz crystals are quite common although usually imperfect . Muscovite plates 10 feet in diameter have been mined in India , and the Purdy mica mine in Canada contained a mica crystal measuring 6.5 by 9.5 feet and weighing nearly 7 tons , which supplied more than $20,000 worth of trimmed mica sheet . A loglike crystal of spodumene in the Etta mine in the Black Hills of South Dakota was 42 feet long . Giant crystals of beryl weighing several tons apiece have been mined from several properties . Because so many rare minerals are found in substantial concentration only in pegmatites , it is a common fallacy to suppose that pegmatites are always enriched in rare elements . Traces of most of these elements , of course , are found in almost all igneous rocks , and they reappear in the sediments derived from igneous rocks . It does not follow , however , that all or even most pegmatites contain higher percentages of rare elements than other granitic rocks . Geological evidence points to the probability that notable concentrations of rarer minerals or elements in pegmatites are more or less fortuituous , such additions often being ascribed to events subsequent to the original emplacement of the main body of the pegmatite . The long-term supply of nickel to society was assessed with theWORLD7 model for the global nickel cycle, using new estimates of nickel reserves and resources, indicating that the best estimate of the ultimately recoverable resources for nickel is in the range of 650–720 million ton. This is significantly larger than earlier estimates. The extractable amounts were stratified by extraction cost and ore grade in the model, making them extractable only after price increases and cost reductions. The model simulated extraction, supply, ore grades, and market prices. The assessment predicts future scarcity and supply problems after 2100 for nickel. The model reconstructs observed extraction, supply and market prices for the period 1850–2020, and is used to simulate development for the period 2020–2200. The quality of nickel ore has decreased significantly from 1850 to 2020 and will continue to do so in the future according to the simulated predictions from the WORLD7 model. For nickel, extraction rates are suggested to reach their maximum value in 2050, and that most primary nickel resources will have been exhausted by 2130. After 2100, the supply per capita for nickel will decline towards exhaustion if business-as-usual is continuing. This will be manifested as reduced supply and increased prices. The peak year can be delayed by a maximum of 100 years if recycling rates are improved significantly and long before scarcity is visible.

Flame cutting and welding is one of the major causes of fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines. On May 20, 2006, a flame cutting operation at the Darby Mine No. 1 led to an explosion that resulted in five fatalities. On January 22, 2003, another explosion caused by flame cutting at the McElroy Mine resulted in three fatalities and three serious injuries. On June 22, 1999, a flame cutting and welding operation at the Loveridge Mine caused a fire that resulted in sealing of the mine for an extended period. Finally, on March 19, 1992, an explosion at the Blacksville No. 1 Mine that was caused by welding resulted in four fatalities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study on fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines that were caused by flame cutting and welding operations to determine the root causes of these types of fires and explosions. The methodology included interviewing mining personnel who perform flame cutting or welding operations in underground U.S. coal mines and visiting mines to observe these operations, and MSHA reports of investigations and accidents statistics were analyzed. The results were used to identify and compare differences between flame cutting and welding practices and techniques in small and large mines, Eastern and Western mines, low seam and high seam mines, room and pillar and longwall mines, and between experienced miners and new miners. As a result of this study, best practices and interventions were developed to reduce the number of fires and explosions caused by flame cutting and welding. This paper provides a summary of this work. Research personnel from the Bureau of Mines, representatives of the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA), and members of the mining industry met with other Government and Industry representatives at three seminars held in Pittsburgh, Pa., November 4, 1975; St. Louis, Mo., November 6, 1975; and Denver, Colo., November L1, 1975, to discuss the results of Bureau-sponsored research on coal mine illumination. The program, aimed at developing suitable illumination systems fur the working; places of underground coal mines, covered hardware development and field evaluation and the status of proposed MESA standards and proposed MESA enforcement procedures. These proceedings contain the opening remarks to the seminars and eight technical presentations an various aspects of coal mine illumination.

"SynopsisAccording to the overlying rock strength and thickness of 10 shallow coal seams in China, the strata are classified into four types: weak and laminated strata (hereinafter referred to as WL), weak and massive strata (WM), strong and laminated strata (SL), and strong and massive strata (SM). The four types of strata, together with longwall panel height (M), panel length (L), and seam depth (H) are factors that influence the loads on hydraulic power supports. Principal component analysis was used to study the seven influencing factors. It turns out that seam depth (H) is multicollinear with WL, WM, SL, and SM. Thus the enumerated seven factors are divided into two models. In Model 1, six factors; panel height, panel length, and layer thickness of the four type strata are involved. In Model 2, three factors; panel height, panel length, and seam depth are included. Using multivariate regression analysis, two equations to calculate loads on supports are obtained for each model. The equations were applied to shallow coal seams. The equation of Model 1 is more accurate than that of Model 2, but Model 2 could be further used in deep coal seams. The equations were coded through VB programming to simplify the calculation.IntroductionTo ensure coal production in the long term, the focus of coal mining has been gradually shifted to the western areas of China in recent years due to rich coal resources in this region. Most of the coal seams in this area are shallow but the support loads are abnormally high. In these circumstances, the chock loads estimating methods used in the past do not work. If the rated working resistance of a support is larger than needed, the shield is unable to fully perform, while a lower working resistance would lead to accidents like shield crushing or even casualties. This problem is frequently found in shallow coal seams such as Shenfu-Dongsheng, Yulin, Tuha, Lingwu etc. (Zhang, 2011). Thus, to ensure safety and efficiency during mining, the estimation of support loads and selection of supports are of great significance."

Introduction The recent uranium discovery at Theano point, lake Superior, is probably a rediscovery of the first reported Canadian uranium occurrence. A description of material from the original discovery was published in 1847 by J. L. LeConte, and many attempts have been made to relocate the deposit. Such attempts have in the past been unsuccessful because of vagueness in the original description of the locality. Besides being a prospect that seems to merit development work, the Camray discovery is important because it reaffirms the occurrence of pitchblende in the eastern part of the Precambrian shield. Much staking followed the announcement of the discovery, and some additional finds have been reported. Location The Camray discovery is at the shore of Theano point, lake Superior, about seventy miles north of Sault Ste. Marie (see Figure 1). It is in township 29, range XIV, district of Algoma. The showing is two miles from Highway No. 17, and is reached by a rough trail that leaves the highway at mileage 72.9 from Sault Ste. Marie. There are no towns of any size nearer than Sault Ste. Marie.

THE metallurgical industry has purchased more than sixty per cent of the industrial gas cleaning equipment installed in Canada. This includes cyclonic collectors, scrubbers, cloth filters and Cottrell Precipitators. These are the principal types of equipment which are used commercially for the cleaning of gases which result from the processing of iron, nickel, copper, lead, zinc, gold, gypsum and aluminum ores. The recovered dust, which usually contains metal values, is returned to the process. The cost of the equipment is thus economically justified. This is in contrast to other industries, such as those involving steam power generation, asbestos, cement and lime production, where, though dust collection equipment is extensively used, it is installed primarily for nuisance abatement. Communities are becoming more and more conscious of air pollution, new and more stringent legislation is being enacted, and, for other than economic reasons the smelting industry will eventually be required to install more efficient gas cleaning equipment. The DEEPMINE Research Programme sought to develop the technology and competence to mine gold safely and profitably at depths of 3 to 5 km. Among the many issues addressed was the stability and support of rockpasses at ultra-depth. It was found that high virgin and mining-induced stresses could cause the walls of rockpasses to spall, leading to the deterioration and failure. A comprehensive programme of numerical modelling was conducted to investigate alternative mining layouts and sequences to ameliorate the problem.

(New York Meeting, February, 1912.) By the old method of determining platinum in ores and bullion, the silver-alloy first obtained in the regular course of assay is parted in strong sulphuric acid and the residual metal weighed. This is re-alloyed with silver by a second cupellation and parted in nitric acid, the residual metal being again weighed. Any difference shown between the two weighings is assumed to be, and is called; platinum. Sometimes it is so, and if any considerable amount of platinum be present, there will be a decided difference between the two weighings; but a slight difference is no real evidence whatever of the presence of platinum. On the other hand, the second weight may equal or possibly exceed the first, even when traces of platinum are present. Again, other members of the platinum group may go into solution in nitric acid more or less. If present, these would be called platinum and escape detection. The method does not provide any direct tests whatever as to the presence or absence of platinum. It is often indecisive, and sometimes jives erroneous results. It is, therefore, quite unsatisfactory. Being called upon many times to determine platinum in a wide variety of materials, particularly when present in very small amounts, I have realized the disadvantages and defects of this old method. This study explores how different geometries affect the shock tunnel’s performance and is broken down into three phases. Phase 1: Open arena testing in which theoretical energies produced by the detonation of small (<1.0 kg) charges are compared to actual experimental values. Phase 2: Shock Tunnel testing in which realized energies are experimentally recorded for the UK and S&T shock tunnels. Phase 3: Analysis of the data to begin building a pressure-forecasting tool for the UK shock tunnel given the explosive characteristics, sample size and desired pressure and impulse.

About 15 per cent of total electricity (400 MkW) was generated by nuclear power plants in the world (2009) and about 36 000 tons of uranium has been mined in uranium mines annually. Radioactive waste material is produced from uranium mines and nuclear power plants. The wastes must be disposed or stored safely for long-term. If they leak and/or move from disposal or storage sites due to air/groundwater flow, then a serious environmental pollution can occur. Hence, multi-layer system has been proposed and employed in order to seal off these radioactive waste materials from biosphere. Basically, bentonite is now used for establishing absorbing and sealing layers in this system. However, the amount of high quality betonite is very limited and in some cases it is hard to be obtained.On the other hand, a great deal of refuse from coal burning plants is produced every year and the amount of it is expected to be higher each year, especially in developing countries. More than half of flyash is utilised and the remaining is disposed at the disposal sites. However, the life of the disposal site is limited and it is diff cult to find a new disposal site. It is requested that the percentage of the utilisation of the flyash be increased in every field.From the above two points of view, a flyash-based barrier layer/cover system is considered in this research and this paper discusses the applicability of flyash as a content of barrier layer/cover material based on the results of a series of laboratory tests.

In two decades Turkey has emerged from the debacle of the Ottoman Empire to become one of the most modern nations in the Middle East. The numerous achievements of this period were remarkable in that they affected human and social, as well as economic, fields. Most of this progress was achieved by Turkey&apos;s unaided efforts and the utilization of domestic resources; however, since 1948 various United States aid programs3/ have made significant contributions to increased agricultural and industrial output. Turkey&apos;s singleness of purpose in favor of a strong, independent, and prosperous republic has evoked universal admiration and encouraged the hope of stability in the Middle East. Much of the development of the Turkish economy to date has been fostered by the State; however, with growing strength the leaders in 1950 considered the time appro¬priate to relax the nationalistic economic policy and permit private enterprise to play a larger role in increasing domestic output and raising the tempo of industrialization. In pursuance! Of this policy, laws encouraging investment of foreign capital in Turkey and others stimulating development of mining and petroleum enterprises were enacted in 1954. This new legislation, plus the cooperative attitude of the Turkish Government, have encouraged wide interest in the mineral resources of the country.

These papers summarize the most recent developments in ATRS technology and can serve as a guide to potential designers, developers, and users of ATRS systems.
