Environmental problem is the major concern for any industry and there is a great need to that along green lines. Sangam Dairy being one of the most famous and wide spread Dairies in India, produces wide spectrum of milk products. The BOD levels of effluent water of this industry with MIF treatment were found to be around 100 ppm. Lot of research has been expended in the past to bring down the BOD levels to bare minimum. The main objective of the present study is to minimize the BOD level to the required level stipulated by environmental standards by employing various seeding materials. For this purpose microbes like Bacillus Subtiles, Pseudomonas, Aspergillas, Staphylococcus, and Pencilium have been employed and BOD levels were analyzed. Various Reagents, solutions with different dilution levels have been successfully prepared. Initial and final Dissolved Oxygen levels were determined before and after incubation. From the DO data, BOD was evaluated for all samples and comparison analysis of various seeding material was carried to suggest the efficient seeding material for the ETP plant. In the process, solutions of different dilutions have been prepared using difficult reagents. These samples are treated with above mentioned microbes and BOD levels are estimated. It has been observed that staphylococcus and Pseudomonas proved to be the best seeding materials. When there microbes have employed BOD levels fall to less than 10 and 20 ppm respectively

"Kaolin clays are widely used in various industry segments. Its main properties are fine granulometry, chemical inertness and whiteness. In general, kaolins are not easily organophiilized as a result of its 1: 1 structure. The aim of this paper is to describe the modification of a Brazilian kaolin sample, in order to obtain an organophilic kaolin of high performance. The clay as received was identified by X-ray diffraction and characterized by optical microscopy, cation exchange capacity and swelling tests for observation of their performance in water and organic solvents. Then, the sample was treated with a 10% sodium carbonate solution and with ammonium quaternary, washed several times with distilled water, dried at 60°C, and characterized by XRD and swelling assays. Our results show that the clay was organophiilized and its ability to swell in organic solvents has increased.IntroductionThe kaolin clay, also known as ""china clay"" is chemically a hydrated aluminum silicate characterized as a very fine powder and lamellar structure (1:1), being constituted mainly by kaolinite [l]. Kaolin is a mineral extremely used as raw material. Its properties such as color, softness, small particle size and chemical inertness make it a suitable material for several industrial applications. The desired properties of kaolin varies widely for each application, beginning with its largest use in the paper industry until minor uses in the sectors of cosmetics and pharmaceutics. These two last applications require purified kaolin with defined functionality [2]. To find improvements in the functionality of kaolin for specific applications is important for many industrial uses. Sometimes the way to find these improvements might be modification of the kaolin clay by treatment with a chemical substance as ammonium quaternary, causing surface modifications [3,4]. In this work is described the modification of a Brazilian kaolin sample by treatment with cetyl trimethylammonium chloride (CTAC). The properties of the modified kaolin are being assessed by characterization and essays to understand its functionality and industrial application."

"There is an expanding interest in synthesizing high quality magnetic nanoparticles, most notably for biomedical applications. Different processing routes have been reported for the synthesis of magnetite and maghemite. However, some ambiguity remains on their precise chemistry, intermediates, and final products, due to the structural similarity of maghemite and magnetite, and the relative ease of redox transitions during synthesis. Here we present the results of TEM, x-ray and electron diffraction, and SQUID studies aimed at characterizing the products from two different reaction systems, thereby clarifying the reaction chemistry. The first system hydrolyzed aqueous FeCh and FeCb chlorides with ammonia in a micro fluidic reactor at ambient temperature; although the reaction product displayed a uniform distribution, it included non-magnetic goethite and lepidocrocite. If the aqueous solutions contained dissolved oxygen, there appeared to be extensive oxidation of Fe(II). The second system thermally decomposed iron (III) acetylacetonate in ether. In prior studies, oleylamine has been reported to serve as both a reducing agent and capping ligand to control particle characteristics; however, our studies revealed little reduction, with maghemite dominating the reaction products.IntroductionMagnetite and maghemite nanoparticles are co=only used in ferrofluids, in medical applications, and in drug delivery. Superparamagnetic properties, along with low cytotoxicity, colloid stability and bioactive molecule conjugation capability, make these nanomagnets ideal for both in-vitro and in-vivo biomedical applications [1]. One of the major constraints on widespread adoption of nanoparticles for these applications is the amount needed. Typical batch synthesis methods produce polydispersed nanoparticles, which require further size selection procedures to isolate the mono disperse nanoparticle population needed for many applications. In order to maximize the yield of usable particles from a synthesis operation, the reaction conditions must be closely controlled. This requires full knowledge of how the reaction conditions control the various aspects of nanoparticle growth. Many methods have been used to synthesize iron oxides, including sonochemical reactions, mechanochemical synthesis, hydrolysis and thermal decomposition. This work examines the latter two methods, focusing on oxidation and reduction of iron."

Ultrasonic stimulation of constituent suspension (metakaolinite/NaOH) can improve the rate of synthesizing reaction for zeolite Na-A. Zeolite Na-A can be synthesized from the suspension by sonicating treatment at comparatively shorter exposing time than conventional heating treatment. The main effect of ultrasound for the production of zeolite Na-A in the present heterogeneous solid/liquid reaction is intense stirring the solid and liquid substances to produce relatively narrow-sized zeolite Na-A particles with higher CEC value.

Newmont has investigated potential treatment options for low-grade refractory gold ores since 1988. After extensive R&D at Newmont?s laboratories, biooxidation pretreatment followed by ammonium thiosulfate leaching was selected for application to sulfidic preg robbing ores. A heap biooxidation and ammonium thiosulfate leaching demonstration facility was constructed in 1995 to conduct large-scale pilot tests at Newmont?s Carlin Operations. This paper presents Newmont?s experience with the recovery of gold from preg robbing ores using ammonium thiosulfate.

This paper describes the characteristics of electric arc furnace slag (EAF slag) as an aggregate of concrete along with the chemical composition, leaching concentration of heavy metals, the soundness of EAF slag and compressive strength of mortar with 20% and 50% replacements of sand. The results showed that leaching of heavy metals and soundness of EAF slag satisfied Korean environmental limit and Korean Industrial Standard for aggregates. The compressive strength of mortar increased as the replacement ratio of EAF slag for sand increased.

"The characterization of the surface roughness of the mineral particles is of vital importance for the studies of the mineral processing. In this study, an evaluation of the roughness of the iron ore particles, with the measurements of size distribution and the measurements of specific surface area with the liquid nitrogen absorption, was developed. The main theory of this method is the fact that the roughness of the particle influences the specific surface area apparently. The specific surface area of the particles can be measured with the laser diffraction method and the liquid nitrogen absorption method. The influence of the surface roughness of the particle can be measured with the nitrogen absorption and cannot be measured with the laser diffraction. Therefore, the roughness can be got by comparing the specific surface area with two measurement methods.IntroductionThe characterization of the surface roughness of the mineral particles is of vital importance for the studies of the mineral processing. There are three main methods for measuring the size distribution of mineral particles: sieving, laser diffraction, and sedimentationl). Many techniques involve sedimentation such as the Horiba2, 3) and the Cyclo-sizer1). In the mineral industry, size distribution is usually determined by sieving because it can be carried out accurately for all particle sizes larger than 45 . The preferred method to obtain the size distribution of finer particles is laser diffractometry. The technique has several advantages: it produces measurements in a few minutes with considerably less labor compared with the cyclo-sizer and for a range of sizes considerably wider in comparison with the sedigraph4). The equivalent-sphere size distribution reported by laser diffractometry is valid for metallurgical calculations and can be routinely used in mineral processing plants. The surface area of the particles can be measured by the BET method of nitrogen adsorption, or it can be calculated from the size distribution. However, the latter calculation requires the size distribution to be accurately known across the whole size range, and assumptions have to be made about the shapes and surface roughness of the particles and presence or absence of pores (see below). The BET method is based on the physical adsorption of gas over the whole exposed surface area and measures the surface area stemming from the roughness and open pores on the surface of the particle5). The calculation of the surface area from the size distribution is usually based on the assumption that all the particles are smooth spheres, without considering the shape and/or roughness of the particles. Determining the surface roughness of the particle with these methods, is the objective of this study."

In this study the effects of interstitial ratios on k-feldspar samples were investigated. The k-feldspar samples were taken from Egypt using dry batch grinding conditions and a kinetic model. Three different mono size fractions (-3350+2360, -850+600 and -300+212 µm) were ground separately for 0.5, 1, 4, and 8 minutes and at four different interstitial ratios (125%, 100%, 75% and 50%) using a Bond mill with a mixture of five ball sizes. The mill used was at a size of 30.5 cm diameters, with 30.5 cm length, providing a total mill volume of 22272 cm3. The mill has a total mass consisting of 22648 g. steel ball mixtures of 38.10, 31.75, 25.40, 19.05 and 12.70mm diameters, occupying 22% of mill volume. The mill rotates at a speed of 70 rpm. The weights of the feed charges were 3000, 2000, 1000, and 500 g for 125%, 100%, 75% and 50% filling of the interstices of the balls respectively. The specific rate of breakage (Si) was determined from the top size fractions at different grinding times that were mentioned above and the model parameters were compared for the four different powder filling ratios (U). In many investigations, it has been found that an interstitial filling ratio of U = 0.6-1.1 is a good powder ball loading ratio to give an efficient breakage in a ball mill. In this study, it was found that U=1.25 is a good ratio for K-Feldspar.

In the world, as well as in Republic of Serbia, conventional ore reserves are almost exhausted, so the problem of their shortage is more and more expressed. On the other side, there are many locations with significant reserves of polymetallic ores which present huge potential but cannot be classically processed. Each of these classes of materials has particular mineralogical characteristics which affect their processing. Because of that it is necessary to develop particular technology for each unconventional ore in order to extract valuable elements. The aim of investigation was to define technology for complex processing of the Blagojev Kamen sulfide concentrate by pyrometallurgical procedure in order to valorize valuable non-ferrous and precious metals present, and profit with absolute respect of environmental protection laws. The complex composition of the Blagojev Kamen sulfide concentrate with high content of non-ferrous (15.59% Pb, 9.05% Zn, 2.37% Cu) and precious (697 g/t Au and 744 g/t Ag) metals was the main factor for technological procedure and collector selection. Laboratory investigations are done in four series according to technological scheme: oxidizing roasting, charge preparation (flux addition and agglomeration), smelting under reducing conditions, lead bullion refining, Dore metal refining to final products. It is concluded that precious metals are concentrated in lead bullion (up to 97.95% of gold and 93.37% of silver), which has similar composition to lead bullion produced in lead metallurgy. In this case, simplified technology is used for lead bullion processing because of low content of arsenic, bismuth, etc.

"During friction stir welding, the tool geometries affect the weld together with the process parameters like welding speed, vertical pressure and tool rotational speed. The present investigation deals with the three dimensional computational fluid dynamics modeling of friction stir welding process considering material flow around the tool, welding speed with respect to tool geometries. Friction stir welding tools with different tool geometries were used for the experiments to achieve acceptable aluminum welds. The temperatures near the welds for each tool were experimentally observed. A 3-D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed. Temperature-dependent material properties of the aluminum alloy were used in the CFD model. Thermal analysis was carried out considering rotational speed, vertical pressure and traverse speed for the tool geometries. The numerically predicted stirring patterns and temperature profiles closely matched with the experimental ones. IntroductionThe friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid state welding process where generally the metallic materials are joined by the combined action of frictional heating and weld zone stirring by a rotating tool [1]. The heat generated in the process is much below the requirement of melting the plates; hence the FSW process is devoid of harmful effects those are observed during arc welding. The FSW process utilizes a tool which has a shoulder and a protruding pin known as the probe. The shoulder is responsible for frictional heating while the pin probe facilitates stirring of the joint material. A schematic of FSW process is shown in Fig. 1."

Although secondary aluminum industry is well established in the world, the recycling process still requires further development to adequately control the process for a higher aluminum yield and a better product quality. In the present paper, recyclabilities of different aluminum scraps have been experimentally studied. Four types of commercial scraps were characterized and melted at 800 - 900 °C to recover 'aluminum metal with the protection salt flux of NaCl-KCl-Na3AlF6 under nitrogen atmosphere. According to the results, the difficulty of recycling aluminum scrap depends on the cleanness and the ratio of surface area to body volume. More non-metallic contaminates and higher ratio of surface area to body volume usually led to a lower metal yield. Usually cast ingots gave better results than rolling mill cuttings under similar conditions. Bottle caps can be recycled more easily than the margarine foil. The effect of temperature was not as significant as the composition of salt flux.
