This paper presents the concepts which are presently being utilized in the design of coal export terminals. Criteria for selecting a viable site and establishing the terminal plan are presented. Factors affecting the design of the terminal as well as the present techniques and procedures in use today to determine the optimum use of equipment will be discussed along with the current trends in export terminal control systems. Finally capital and operating costs for a typical export terminal are reviewed.

Horizontal stresses are caused by global plate tectonic forces. During 1995 alone, they were largely responsible for closing two U.S. longwall mines. This paper presents six case histories from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Alabama. In each case history, a mine encountered roof falls or difficult ground conditions in the headgate, caused by horizontal stress concentrations. The problems are detailed, and the control measures adopted are described. In most cases, nearby longwall panels without stress concentrations were trouble-free. The paper also discusses detailed measurements made at two adjacent Pennsylvania longwalls. One headgate was oriented to avoid a horizontal stress concentration, and the other was not. Eliminating the stress concentration dramatically reduced roof support loads and roof deformation. The paper concludes that proper panel orientation and sequence is the key to maintaining headgate ground control. The optimum orientation is not parallel with the maximum horizontal stress, as previously thought, but rather 20° in the stress shadow of the gob. Other stress control techniques, including artificial support, are briefly discussed.

Oleic acid has been almost invariably used in the flotation of siliceous fluorite ores. The performance of oleic acid, however, deteriorates with carbonaceous fluorite ores. Oleoyl sarcosine developed recently has been found to produce results superior over oleic acid with ores containing high calcite contents. While the mechanism of oleate adsorption is usually considered as chemisorption involving calcium oleate formation on both calcite and fluorite, no mechanism has been so far proposed to explain the adsorption mechanism of oleoyl sarcosine. In this study, the selectivity of oleoyl sarcosine, as inferred from flotation, zeta potential and infrared measurements, is ascribed to the interaction of fluorine ion to the nitrogen via hydrogen bonding.

Further discussion includes: critical examination of the recently completed EPA Areawide EIS; potential effects of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976; the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977; current local and state laws; and summary of studies on radiochemical effects of mining, seepage from gypsum ponds, and dewatering of waste clays.

Erie Mining Company, a pioneer in the iron ore pelletizing industry, has continued to develop methods and equipment to improve cost and quality. Under the management of Pickands Mather & Co., this property, owned by Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, Steel Company of Canada, Ltd., and Interlake, Inc., has initiated a number of operating improvements for the taconite industry. One of the most noteworthy of these, which is applicable to the entire mineral industry, is the principle of fine screening with rappers (FSR). Erie's original efforts in the field of fine screening, which date back to 1961, were described in the April 1967 issue of the MINING ENGINEERING magazine. In that same month, Erie placed into operation a full scale PSR and regrind plant addition, capable of processing 10.3 million long tons of iron ore concentrates, produced by conventional taconite grinding, classification, and magnetic separation methods. Since this first successful commercial operation of the PSR principle et Erie, it has been applied in eight other iron ore beneficiation plants end is being tested by other U.S. and foreign companies. In addition to the use of PSR units at Erie Mining Company, Pickands Mather has applied PSR to other of its managed properties end to projects under development. This paper covers these applications as well as a now application at Erie Mining Company.

Mines are constantly trying to improve production processes by optimizing work cycles, reducing operational delays, minimizing costs, controlling equipment utilization, and preventing occupational hazards. Currently, advances in digital mining technologies within the concepts of 5G and Industrial Touch Internet are allowing better control and monitoring of underground mining equipment, with centralized control systems that unify data analysis for proper decision making. A wireless 5G-based platform for controlling and monitoring systems for underground mine operations can be designed over a comprehensive layout in where bandwidth selection, sensor location, Wi-Fi repeaters and power distribution are put together to build a successful supervisory system. In order to confirm the validation of these concepts, a case study is proposed for a medium-sized underground mine with a multi-level network which includes tablets managed by production supervisors, along with other data collection devices installed in semi-autonomous mining equipment, collecting, and distributing data in near-real time, with interconnection to support and services areas on the surface.

The critical surface tension of wetting values (Ye) of realgar (AsS), talc [Mg3si401o (OH) 2]' stibnite (Sb2S3), and sulfur (S) were determined by flotation in the absence of conventional flotation collectors as 38.7, 38.0, 35.5, and 30.0 dyne/cm, respectively. The surface tensions of flotation media were arranged by methanol. Separation of binary mixtures of these minerals was performed exploiting their Ye differences-which form the basis of the "ganuna flotation process". One step flotation test showed that sulfur floats preferentially from its mixtures with realgar and stibnite at recoveries of 73.6 and 70.7 % and grades of 81.7 and 91.2 %, respectively. The separation of stibnite from realgar gave a recovery of 4.1 % and a grade of 41.2 % for stibnite, indicate that a minimal Ye difference of 3.6±0.2 dyne/cm is essential for such separation when conventional flotation reagents are not used. This paper presents data and describes the approach employed in these separations.

A new sense of urgency permeates the mining industry concerning maintenance. Mining's continuous process environment demands around-the-clock maintenance support. And profitability conscious mining operations require that production targets be met on time - and economically. These goals require nothing less than an effective maintenance program. In turn, the effectiveness of the maintenance program depends on quality information: easily procured, complete, timely, accurate, and properly used. Information picture is changing Some of the fully integrated, mainframe maintenance information pro¬grams of better days remain. Their upkeep and cost of operation, though, is becoming more difficult to justify. Some operations, faced with production cutbacks a few years ago, downscaled and found they liked it. Now, during an upswing, these operations question the need for the more elaborate, administrative-heavy programs they used to operate. Package programs are not taking their place. Too often, the packages are vague and generic. Some vendors claim that if their offerings work in a hospital complex, they must work in an underground mine. That is not so. Maintenance information in the mining industry is different. The situation has changed There are now smaller, self-contained maintenance groups whose information needs are different. These include an electrical crew in a smelter, an underground mobile equipment shop, or a remote service shop between several distant operating pits. These working environments have changed the character of the information needed as well as the methods for obtaining and using it. Operations-maintenance link In coming back from a downturn, operations people realize that their ability to meet production targets hinges on reliable equipment and avoidance of downtime. They have become familiar with the need to use maintenance services effectively. They also want quality maintenance information. When coupled with the sense of urgency about maintenance, a business-like working environment emerges that has significant new differences in both work control and information. Work control impact Work control has been streamlined to improve communications. Supporting information has been streamlined as well. • Verbal orders are the rule rather than the exception to quickly bring a multi-craft crew to the flotation section or a pit crew to a disabled haulage truck. • Written work requests and work order forms are seldom used, or even needed. Rather, electronic work control logs permit operations to request work, maintenance to acknowledge it, get ready, and do it - quickly, without delay. • Routine servicing is triggered by operating hour accumulation (mobile equipment) or tons of throughput (fixed equipment). Operations is now taking the initiative in delivering mobile equip¬ment to the "bad order line," or switching to a bypass conveyor. It's indeed a pleasure for me to speak to you today about the development and operation of large-scale surface coal mining projects in the western United States. It is an exciting story about American business working to solve a critical national problem -- the energy shortage -- through research, new technologies, financial innovation, and imaginative management. The North American Coal Corporation -- the second largest independent mining company and ninth largest United States coal producer -- is proud to be a part of this story. Our operations in North Dakota reflect the coal industry's Western activities. So, today, I would like to focus on our planned involvement in that state. I'll briefly survey why North American is developing large- scale surface mining in North Dakota, and I will outline the many problems associated with this coal development and how we are working to solve them. Finally, I will look at the financial and management techniques we are using to make it all work. In short, I'm going to present a case study of Western coal mining. Let's begin by looking at the reasons we are in North Dakota. The United States Bureau of Mines estimates that 44 per cent of the nation's total recoverable coal deposits underlie the three Northern Great Plains States of North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. We estimate that North Dakota alone has about 25 billion economically surface-mineable tons of coal with today's technology. North Dakota has the energy that could keep our factories running and our homes lighted In the years ahead.

The so-called "construction aggregates," sand and gravel, crushed stone, and several kinds of metallurgical slags, are used principally in the construction and maintenance of all kinds of roads, engineering structures, buildings, homes, airports, etc. Production of these aggregates is approaching two billion tons annually. In terms of tonnage produced, sand and gravel has been the leading mineral since 1954, with crushed stone gradually approaching an equal tonnage. Sand and gravel is of widespread occurrence and of wide variation in suitable gradation and quality. It is a low-value, heavy-loading, short-haul commodity. These characteristics account for the historic concentration of production tonnage in and near urban areas where construction activities are concentrated. The combination of improved urban and near-urban highway systems and the steadily rising rail rates for short-haul traffic has fostered a consistent change since World War II from rail to truck transport, with trucks now accounting for more than 807 of the tonnage moving away from the production sites. While there are increasing numbers of exceptions, truck transport of sand and gravel is generally limited to about 30 miles. The expansion of the urban and near-urban areas of even moderate density, which became so pronounced after World War II, has been the source of most of the sand and gravel industry's environmental difficulties. Dust, noise and truck traffic associated with the operations -- particularly truck traffic -- have, of course, generated public complaint. This has been particularly true in those many cases where housing developments have approached and even surrounded sand and gravel operations which were in operation before the development started.

INTRODUCTION, CONCEPTS, AND MEASUREMENT Introduction Periods in the history of man, from his earliest appearance to the present, are often characterized by the principal materials used. In nearly all cases, the material or fuel is of mineral origin-stone, copper, bronze, iron, coal, and so forth-indicating the principal ingredient of the tools or source of power of the period. Each of these periods represented great improvement over the preceding one in terms of human well-being, as measured by population growth and other indicators (Cipolla, 1978). A major reason for the improvements in production and well-being was the nature of the material or fuel, each successively superior to the preceding, which made it possible to produce more food, fuel, shelter, and clothing with a given amount of labor. If we accept this well-documented description of economic progress as accurate, we may then turn to the consideration of two related questions concerning this development. The first, easily answered,-is why man spent long periods of time (millenia, in many cases) making tools from inferior materials, such as copper, instead of passing directly to superior materials, such as iron and steel. The second, closely related question, concerns the relation between the rate of economic growth and the quantity of mineral reserves available at any time. For the first question, the answer is that the technology required to discover, extract, and process each successive material had to be discovered and developed before the material could be used. Once the technology was available, the new material could be and was exploited widely, raising productivity-output per unit of labor- and consequent consumption per person. This familiar idea underlies a fundamental principle of the economics of resources, namely, at any time, available resources depend upon available technology. No mineral or other raw material is a resource unless the technology has been developed to utilize it. But once the technology is at hand, the new resources associated with it provide the means for economic growth and rising levels of living. This principle is subject to certain conditions. For example, governments or other institutions may prevent a mineral from being used, even though the technology is available. And, if a mineral is located in a remote place, transportation charges may make it uneconomic to exploit. Such minor qualifications do not, however, change the thrust of the argument that technology is the overriding determinant. With respect to the second question, it might seem apparent that the greater the quantity of reserves available, up to some point, the more economic growth will be facilitated. This line of reasoning leads to the conclusion that as re- serves are consumed the quantity available will be reduced and economic growth will eventually be restrained. Reasoning of this sort underlies much popular (and scholarly) thought, in which depletion of mineral and other resources is assumed to lead to constraints on economic growth, through higher materials costs and absolute limitations on materials use. Variations in ore grade, mineralogy, and copper pricing structures over the life of the Inspiration mine have mandated many modifications to the treatment methods to maximize process economics. In the 1970's, copper prices generally declined, while inflation, wages, and interest rates increased. A metallurgical treatment route had to be developed for this continuing economic climate which would be capable of minimizing labor, energy, and capital cost requirements. After many years of development, the patented "Ferric Cure" process was introduced to satisfy these requirements. This dump leach process for treatment of mixed oxide/sulfide ore includes: strict mineralogical control of ore placed for leaching, controlled leach pad construction, solution saturation and curing of the pads with higher acid concentrations, and, finally, rinsing of the cured pads for removal of dissolved copper. Leach solutions, high in sulfuric acid during the cure application and low in sulfuric acid during the rinse, contain sufficient ferric iron to enhance the leaching of chalcocitic sulfide minerals.

This paper presents an analytical technique for prediction of the damaged rock zone (DRZ) around a circular drift subjected to an anisotropic stress field (analytical solution exists only for the case of hydrostatic stress field). The method can readily be adapted to micro or personal computers. Stress concentrations around the drift are calculated at the centers of small rock elements, using the analytical solutions for a hole in an infinite plate. Potential failure of a rock element is assumed to be governed by the Coulomb failure criterion. When the failure condition is exceeded for an element, the excess shear stress is transferred to the neighboring elements. Progressive failure is allowed to occur until convergence is obtained. The final configuration of the damaged rock zone so obtained can be used to assess rock support requirements, as well as modified modulus and permeability of the DRZ.

A Google search on talc asbestos yields more than 500,000 hits due to the growing number of civil lawsuits in this area. Historically, the litigation was centered on amphibole-containing industrial talc. There was no debate these talcs contained amphiboles, but the issue was the definition of asbestos and whether the amphiboles had an asbestiform habit. Ultramafic-hosted talcs, however, are formed in such a way as to not favor the formation of amphiboles in the talc, but they can occur in the surrounding black-wall. In these deposits, the serpentinite host rock is in direct contact with the talc, therefore, allegations can be made that non-asbestiform amphiboles or non-regulated serpentine group minerals can occur in the final products. We analyzed talcs from both metamorphosed carbonate- and ultramafic-hosted talc deposits using polarized light microscopy (PLM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), electron microprobe (EPMA) with wavelengthdispersive spectroscopy (WDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with EDS, and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Compositions of minerals determined by EDS alone are not sufficient to confidently identify asbestos, despite common practices by some researchers. We emphasize, using both historical samples, and analyses of currently contested minerals, the importance of determining both the structure and composition of a mineral, as well as defining its morphology, before concluding whether it is asbestos.

The first step in energy conservation in any industrial plant involves implementing many of the day-to-day "house-keeping" items such as fixing leaks, turning out lights, etc. When this step has been accomplished, additional opportunities require a detailed analysis of the energy systems, evaluation of risks and costs, and assignment of priorities. Examples of conservation schemes drawn from the experience of Du pont's Energy Management Consulting Services will be discussed. The utility of heat balances for kilns and dryers in minerals processing will be outlined. The inputs needed from Management for the success of conservation efforts will be discussed.

Roofbolts with expansion anchors have been used at White Pine for more than twelve years, but always with an understanding that their performance was not entirely satisfactory. Some bolts fell out, some were obviously loose, and, when roof failures did occur, very few bolts actually broke. Obviously, there was an anchorage problem. A program was started in May, 1967, to define the problem and to solve it. This paper describes briefly those parts of the program which led to the development of a roofbolt assembly which performs much better in the medium-hard rocks at White Pine. As a result of the changes, significant improvements were found in the torque:tension, tension loss, and pull tests.

Potassium, together with nitrogen and phosphorous, is one of the essential nutrients required for growth. All living things need potash and so the major demand for potash (approximately 95% of, total demand) is as a fertilizer. Traditional agricultural techniques relied on the return of organic materials to the soil to provide nutrient requirements and maintain soil fertility, and the prevailing low crop yields required little in the way of added fertilizers. But agricultural productivity has increased dramatically in recent times, and this increase in crop yields requires substantial amounts of added nutrients to keep the soil fertile. It follows that there will always be a demand for potash. There is no substitute. Other fertilizers that contain N and P are complementary and not competing products.

Industrial minerals or non-metallic minerals are loosely used terms applied to a diverse assortment of materials which, in many cases, have nothing more in common other than the fact that they are neither metals nor fuel minerals. To help bring order to this otherwise random assortment of minerals, we have grouped these materials into two main categories; chemical and physical minerals, and nine sub-categories based on end-use applications as shown in Table 1. Chemical minerals are products which are principally used for the specific chemical elements they contain, whereas physical minerals are products which are used to meet specific performance specifications. The latter part of the 1970?s, in particular 1978, were considered peak years in terms of production and sales for many industries, By using 1978 as a base year, we can evaluate wherethese markets stand today after the recession of the early 1980's and the recovery which began several years ago. From this historical overview and appraisal of the current situation, various assumptions can be drawn as to which markets are expected to perform well into the 1990's.

In 1873 Barton tines Corporation mining Garnets for Abrasives. From providing bulk Garnet Concentrate the technology has advanced to the sizing and classification of micron sized particles utilizing a Barton process. Processing of Garnet involves extensive quality control at all steps, first to insure product purity and secondly to insure the correct size range. Barton Mines produces about 30 different sizes of Garnet products to lead the world in the manufacture of technical abrasive Garnet. This paper will examine the present technology of Garnet Abrasive Manufacture and the specification to which the sizes are produced as well as some of the markets served.
