In three recent publications, Klimpel et al (1988) and Klimpel and Hansen (1988, 89), the theory and invention process behind the identification of two new classes of sulfide mineral collectors were summarized. These two new families can be represented by the 111 generalized formulate: R1-S-R1 -NRI III (denoted as the F-series chelation family) and R-S-R or R -CHSCH-R (denoted as the S-series redox family). The influence of systematic changes in the various R groupings on laboratory batch flotation cell tests has been covered in the above references and will not be repeated in this paper. In particular, the recent article by Klimpel and Hansen (1989) should be studied as a research introduction to this paper.

"The Riyadh Metro Project forms part of a complete new public transport system integrated in the urban planning and development of the fast growing capital city of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Design & Build project consists of 176 km of a new metro network with 57 km of double track single tunnel infrastructures, spread over six metro lines. During the design phase, geological, hydrogeological, geotechnical and geophysical site investigations were undertaken to chart the, previously uncharted, underground construction space. Different TBM solutions were selected for implementation taking due consideration of the ground conditions of each metro line. The results obtained from deep excavations for underground stations and analysis of the TBM tunneling data will be used as key input for future tunneling projects in the Riyadh and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The present paper details the design conditions and presents the solutions for large diameter tunnels in karstic limestone. INTRODUCTION The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh was established in 1974 as the organizational, planning, executive and coordinating body responsible for the development of Riyadh. Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA), established in 1983, is the High Commission’s executive, technical and administrative arm. The ADA is responsible for implementing the High Commission's organizational, planning, executive and coordinating decisions and missions (ADA 2015). One of the remits of the ADA is the preparation and execution of a transport plan for the city. The metro network is planned to be the backbone of the public transport system developed as part of the King Abdulaziz Project for Riyadh Public Transport in Riyadh. With six lines and a total length of 176.5 km (Table 1) and 85 metro stations, the metro network will cover most of the densely populated areas, public facilities, and the educational, commercial and medical institutions. The network will connect the King Khalid International Airport, the King Abdullah Financial District, main universities, Riyadh downtown and the public transport center. The public transport plan includes a future bus network with 22 lines on 1200 km and 6765 stops that will be the main feeder for the Riyadh metro network; it will also be the main mode of transportation within and around Riyadh districts (ADA 2015)."

Many aerodynamic and thermodynamic properties, such as temperature, pressure, velocity and density vary widely, and in random spatial and temporal manner for a given underground mine environment. Such variabilities are seldom evaluated statistically, even though the relevant theories and principles for such an approach are both available and feasible. The main purpose of this paper was to introduce the new methodology of applying aerostatistics to the analysis of multiple fan system in mine aerology and/or ventilation. Pertinent data were obtained from a small multilevel coal mine. Results proved and confirmed that aerostatistical methodologies are computationally more efficient, grounded in solid engineering statistical theories, and can be used to analyze networked parameters in mine environmental engineering.

To date VMD have designed, built and supplied nine autoclaves to various mining companies in Canada, the US, and Papua New Guinea. Initially, completely fabricated and lead lined units were shipped. The logistics of Placer Dome's Porgera PNG Project necessitated fabricating and lead lining each autoclave in five sections for transportation to site, each piece weighing approximately 30.5 tonnes. Support equipment such as turning rolls, automatic and manual welding machines had to be set up on site to facilitate assembly of these units which was a challenge in planning. This on site erection programme was completed in three months.

Environmental pressures on waste disposal are forcing pigment producers to use higher content TiO2 feedstocks with lower levels of trace elements. Despite this, 50% of the worlds TiO2 comes from ilmenite concentrates with only 37 -54 % TiO2 An industry growth rate of 25 % in the next ten years combined with trends to diminishing resources and lower grades for rutile (95 % TiO2) and leucoxenized ilmenite (55 to 90% TiO2) mean that unless new discoveries are made soon, the industry will become even more reliant on ilmenite. A hypothetical ideal feedstock is presented and strategies to obtain it are suggested. Reasons for some of the mineral specifications are given.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW), located in Tucson, AZ, will hold its 16th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet Saturday, Dec. 5,1998. The Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding contributions to the mining industry by selected individuals and industry partners. Each year, one living award recipient and up to two mining history honorees are chosen by the , Hall of Fame Committee and the Board of Governors of the Mining Foundation. In 1989, the Mining Foundation initiated a Medal of Merit to recognize outstanding individual, technical and professional contributions to the mineral industry. In 1995, an award was created to recognize contributions made by companies and organizations in partnership with the mining industry. This year's inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker will be Charles G. Preble, president and chief executive officer of Southern Peru Copper Corp. He is being recognized for outstanding performance as an executive of an American company operating under difficult circumstances in a foreign country. The Hall of Fame will induct H. Myles Jacob, former chairman and CEO of Inspiration Copper Co., for innovation and farsightedness in matters pivotal to the cop- per industry of his time. In addition, John Cromwell Lincoln, former president and chairman of Bagdad Mining Co., will be inducted for his outstanding contributions to the American mining industry. These contributions include metallurgical research and development of the Bagdad Mine as well as pioneering innovation in the electrical industry. Medals of Merit will be awarded to David N. Skillings, editor and publisher of Skillings Mining Re- view, for his dedication and support of mining interests. J. Ruben Velasco Rodriguez will also receive a Medal of Merit. He is economic geologist, professor and former secretary of the board of directors and secretary general of Compania Minera de Cananea. His medal is for fostering excellent relations between Mexico and the , United States in mining geology and management and for advancing the professional development of others in the field of earth science. An Industry Partnership Award will be presented to Stephen Bechtel and the Bechtel Corp. in recognition of Bechtel's 100th anniversary and the company's outstanding service to the mining industry. The demand for mineral raw materials, especially in the major industrialized nations, has grown rapidly during the past three decades. One consequence of this growth has been an increasing reliance by the large industrialized countries upon nondomestic mineral supplies. These mineral supplies, to a large extent, have been developed by capital from the major industrialized countries. Until recently, most foreign mining ventures were either wholly-owned subsidiaries or joint ventures between two or more mining companies. The recent rise of economic nationalism has substantially changed the business climate and parameters under which foreign investors operate. This paper describes some of the underlying reasons for this change and notes how investors have adapted to the new business conditions.

The existing Central City Tunnel was built primarily in the 1930s with a small portion as old as the 1880s. It conveys stormwater in downtown Minneapolis. It is a 4,400-ft long tunnel located 80 feet underground. The Central City Tunnel has experienced surcharging and surface overflows during heavy rainfall events. This paper presents the details of tunnel and shaft design for the new Central City Parallel Tunnel to mitigate the overflows. The design considered hydraulics and geotechnical engineering for the structural geologic conditions including the weak Saint Peter Sandstone and overlying strong Platteville Limestone. Ground conditions resulted in tunnel designs including large flat-back box tunnels and unique cathedral-shaped tunnel sections.

Introduction This chapter addresses the need for operation manuals, presents an outline as a guide for writing the manual, discusses who should write the manual, suggests how it is implemented and gives tips to potential manual writers. Theory & Purpose of Operating Manuals The primary objective of the operating manual is to provide every operator the benefit of a uniform minimum level of training. This training is not only critical to the safety and efficiency of every employee, but also provides a basis for incorporating future operational improvements into standard and emergency procedures. The manual promotes safety through- out and additionally has a special section devoted to safety. The operator should be able to find information on chemical and physical hazards as well as be exposed to safety procedures for such items as motor lockouts and tank entries. The operating manual will usually reference a separate safety manual or incorporate parts of the safety manual. Safety is also promoted through standardized procedures for operation of equipment. Standardized operation is the second most important reason for the writing of manuals. If equipment is started, operated, and shut down in a consistent manner, then operational efficiency should be maximized. If it is not, then the procedure is adjusted until it is. The experience of many can be condensed into set responses for start up, shutdown, steady state operations, and upsets. Implicit with the standardized operation objective is a minimum level of training the operator will receive by thorough familiarization with the manual. The ability to know the contents of the manual is a basic requirement for operator status. The operating manual serves as a basis for a training program both at the start of the new plant and as new operators are hired or promoted into the job. The operating manual is a collection of at least part of the knowledge that "key people" own and will cushion the loss of key personnel for whatever reason. The manual can only fulfill these lofty goals by being a dynamic document. Manuals must change as equipment is modified and superior techniques evolve. Geological remote sensing is, "....the study of the Earth utilizing electro-magnetic radiation (EMR) which is either reflected or emitted from the land surface in wavelengths ranging from ultra-violet (0.3 micrometre) to microwave (3 metre)."1 Selected examples which illustrate a variety of successful geologic applications include lithologic mapping, 2 engineering soils mapping,3 tectonic interpretation,4 and mineral and petroleum exploration.5 This report examines the applicability of remote sensing for bauxite exploration in northeastern Mississippi. Specific objectives were to map lithologies of northeastern Mississippi from LANDSAT imagery, to determine the utility of LANDSAT imagery for delineating and mapping known deposits of bauxite, and to discover and map new bauxite deposits.

An analysis of the demand for copper shows a widely varying pattern of end use. For example, copper tube is the most popular material for hot water supply in the US and northern Europe, but galvanized steel is used in Japan and plastics are used in developing countries. In addition to such peculiarities of end use, the demand for copper varies among countries depending on the stage of industrialization and the extent that the copper processing industries are developed. Brazil, with its abundant supplies of bauxite and hydroelectric power, uses aluminun in place of copper wherever possible. South Korea, with its export oriented economy and its advanced custom smelting and fabricating industries, favors copper. Understanding the details of demand in different countries enhances statistical derived forecasts and illustrates potential new markets.

In southwest Wyoming lies buried the world's largest source of natural sodium carbonate, or soda ash. Perhaps a hundred billion tons of trona (sodium sesquicarbonate) are contained in ancient lake beds in the Green River basin'). There the Green River Formation encloses more than 40 extensive beds of trona. At least 25 of these exceed 3 feet (1 meter) in thickness and most of them are more than 300 square miles in extent. Five have been exposed in mines and lie between 800 and 1500 feet below the surface. Others lie at depths of from 400 to 3500 feet. Three companies have underground mines that supply trona to adjacent soda ash plants. These are the FMC Corporation, Allied Chemical Corporation, and Stauffer Chemical Company. A fourth, Texasgulf Corporation, has a mine under development. In 1974, annual soda ash capacity in the Green River area was approximately 4,300,000 tons, which requires the mining of about 7,500,000 tons of trona.

We are proud that one of our predecessor companies originated the phrase "Safety First". That phrase remains today as the guiding principle that governs our total approach to safety and well being in U. S. Steel. U. S. Safety is a state of mind but like most things it must have a physical side - both intertwined and inseparable. You might say each promotes the other; and this gives us confidence that with hard work, cooperation from all individuals, and proper application of knowledge and experience, our ultimate objective of frequency "0" will be attained. It is in this vein of thought we present a paper today which gives you briefly our progress, mainly in the physical, or mechanical, protection of miners at work in the Southern District mining operations of U. S. Steel. The Southern District not only includes the underground mining of coal but the underground mining of zinc ore in Jefferson City, Tennessee, and the quarrying of dolomitic limestone near Bessemer, Alabama.

Aeration curing, over- a long duration in wet- red stockpiles, shows promise as an affordable pretreatment method for oxidizing gold encapsulating sulfide minerals, and possibly organic matter, in low grade refractory ores. Following aeration pretreatment, the ore is reclaimed, neutralized, and cyanide leached by conventional practices. Large tonnages of subeconomic material, including mine stripping waste, may he converted into ore by this new technology. The results presented show that a successful application of this technology will likely require crushing to about -2 cm (-3/4 in.), followed by aeration in a wet stockpile for long periods, up m three years. Natural convection may he inadequate, hut forced air ventilation, at modest pressures and power consumption, is affordable.

Restoration of abandoned mine sites is still one of the weak points of mining practice. The latter stands especially for the case of the surface coal and lignite exploitations, where the extended size of the disturbed land and the drastic changes to the geomorphologic features do not facilitate the implementation of a cost effective and environmentally sound reclamation plan. The paper examines the parameters involved towards the legal requirements for the reclamation of the first lignite exploitation in Greece, namely the ?Plakes? mine, located at Euboea, due to the particularities of the site. Then an integrated redesign procedure is presented, aiming at minimizing aesthetic degradation, confronting technical difficulties and preparing the site to accept new uses.

Whole ore or other process streams are being transported from mines to remote processing facilities for multiple reasons, such as improved project economics, maximum utilization of capital, and minimization of environmental risk. Case studies will be presented from a variety of operations. Glenbrook Nickel processes ore from their deposit and receives ore from New Caledonia, crushes and dries the ore, and transports it inland to the smelter. The Mule Canyon and Rosebud ore bodies truck-haul their ores to the Lone Tree and Twin Creeks processing plants. Pegasus Gold hauls their Diamond Hill ore to their Montana Tunnels facilities, and Sierrita pumps solution to an existing tank house 8 miles away for electrolytic recovery.

Object oriented programming has been developed to model the way we think about the world. It allows higher levels of abstraction, generalization and classification than many other programming techniques. Some tools of object oriented design and programming are encapsulation, classes, inheritance, modularity and reusability. Expert systems have been used for years to implement process control strategies in the minerals industry. Expert systems allow process control knowledge to be expressed in linguistic rules that are processed by an inference engine. Expert systems which employ object oriented design and programming provide new opportunities for real- time process control. The concepts of object oriented programming and an example object oriented expert system are discussed in this paper.

Research and experience have demonstrated that the operating conditions of the flotation process are reflected in the froth?s appearance. Despite recent advances in image analysis and several algorithms developed for froth flotation, there still is not a comprehensive algorithm to accurately determine bubble features from actual froth images. Being able to accurately and automatically measure bubble size distribution is an important requirement for optimization and control of the flotation process. Segmentation is one of the most effective approaches for accurately determining the bubble size distribution. In the present study, a new bubble segmentation algorithm, which utilizes an adaptive marker-based watershed transform, is proposed to measure the bubble size distribution from froth images. The developed algorithm is validated using some industrial scale froth images from flotation cells at different duties.

Mines in the Lake Macquarie region of New South Wales, Australia, are faced with the dilemma of having to introduce longwall mining techniques at a time when increasingly large areas of the surface are being used for urban development. Increasing pressures on safety, costs and productivity performance dictate that longwall mining is the method for the future. Construction of surface structures is controlled by a statutory body known as the Mine Subsidence Board (MSB). All surface structures have to be designed to MSB criteria. All mining plans involving secondary excavation also have to be submitted to the MSB for approval. The Board acts as risk assessor in evaluating acceptable levels of surface subsidence vs. the value of the coal resource. Surface repairs are paid for by a levy on all coal producers.
