During the gold cyanidation process, cyanide can be lost from the leachate by various chemical routes. The products of these cyanide losses include base metal cyanide complexes, thio­cyanate and cyanate. These losses are particularly important when treating pyritic or cupriferous ores since the two most sig­nificant cyanic ides, in order of importance, are sulfides and cop­per bearing minerals (I). Cyanidation of pyritic minerals results in the formation of thiocyanate. The problems caused by cyanide soluble copper minerals are well known to the gold processing industry and have been reviewed by several authors (e.g. 2, 3). An important consider­ation, especially with a number of more recent leaching tech­nologies, is the effect of the CN :Cu mole ratio, R, on the gold leaching kinetics. In order to efficiently leach cupriferous ores, it is important that R is maintained at a level that allows suffi­ciently rapid leaching without excessive use of cyanide. The optimum value for R in a fixed leaching system would appear to lie between 3 and 4. This is based on the early observations that the leaching rate is very slow when R is below 3, with a rapid increase in the leaching rate above 3 (2, 3,4). The leaching rate increases gradually when R is greater than 4 (4). The major Cu(I)-cyanide complex in this range of R values is the [Cu(CN)J]2· species. It has been postulated that leaching occurs due to either uncomplexed cyanide or the fourth ligand in [Cu(CN)4]3·, since the stepwise formation constant for this complex is very small (2, 3). An additional consideration when leaching cupriferous ores is the oxidation of cyanide by Cu(II) minerals, resulting in the formation of cyanate. It has also been reported that both sulfide minerals (5) and activated carbon (6, 7) catalyse the oxidation of cyanide to cyanate. From the above discussion, it is important for the leaching con­ditions to be carefully controlled when treating pyritic and cuprifer­ous ores in order to achieve efficient and economically viable leach­ing. For example, large concentrations of thiocyanate in the leachate would reveal large cyanide losses and thus indicate the need for a pretreatment step to oxidize the sulfides. Alternatively, a low R value would indicate slow leaching kinetics and consequent low gold recoveries, indicating the need for increased cyanide dosage.

The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) has become a routine requirement for mining operations on federal lands. A similar document is being required in developing countries. Baseline studies are needed prior to writing an EIS and these studies involve surface water, groundwater, air quality, and wildlife/ native plant evaluations. The required baseline hydrology and geochemical studies are often the most expensive and lengthy evaluations. This paper summarizes the hydrology and geochemical baseline studies required for .An EIS and presents suggested methods to expedite these studies and to shorten the time and the cost to complete the studies and the EIS.

The compressive strength of coal, and its variation within and between seams, was determined for four Pennsylvania coal seams (Pittsburgh, Sewickley, Upper Kittanning and Lower Kittanning). Large coal blocks were obtained from 12 coal mines (three mines per seam) and cut into 50-mm (2-in.) cubes using a low-speed saw. The cubes were tested for compressive strength, with the results used to compute actual pillar strength. Using the tributary area approach, the pillar stress was determined. The pillar stress and strength data were used to calculate the factor of safety against pillar crushing for each mine. The cube strength was also correlated with various physical and chemical coal properties (density, percent absorption, percent ash, percent sulfur and percent carbon) to see if any strong relationships exist. The coal's mean compressive strength varies from 9.1 MPa (1326 psi) in the Lower Kittanning seam to 37.8 MPa (5480 psi) in the Pittsburgh seam. Between different seams the pillar strength varies from 29.5 MPa to 48.1 MPa (4282 psi - 6981 psi). Although coal strength appears to be weakly related to carbon content, no relationship was found between compressive strength and other physical or chemical properties. Since the values for the safety factor against pillar crushing generally exceed the recommended value of two, the existing pillars are mostly overdesigned. This implies that an accurate assessment of coal compressive strength could result in the use of smaller pillars and, thus, increased coal production.

An oversupply of copper on world markets in the early 90' s, coupled with a decrease in demand, resulted in a "tight" market for the sale of copper concentrate. In these conditions small producers of low grade copper concentrates found it difficult to sell their products. The situation was exacerbated for those producers also having reasonable quantities of penalty elements (e.g. As, Bi). The Telfer Gold Mine bulk copper gold concentrate, produced from treating underground sulphide ore, fell into this category (i.e. 16% to 20% copper, 30% to 35% sulphur and 3500ppm to 4500ppm arsenic). The concentrate sulphide minerals are predominately chalcocite and pyrite. Although a higher grade copper concentrate was attainable a substantial decrease in gold recovery ensued. Under the prevailing market conditions a decision was made to stockpile concentrates pending either an easing of market conditions or alternatively finding an on site method for treating the concentrate to recover both the contained gold and copper.

Installation of equipment and structures at mines often requires mine planners to evaluate unique loading and operating conditions. Consideration of these unusual features is required throughout design and construction and into operation. Most planners understand the necessity of employing sound civil, structural and mechanical engineering techniques to design these structures and equipment. However, the influence of geotechnical factors on the overall progress of construction and operation is less appreciated. Mine operators routinely perform exploratory drilling to define ore deposits. These exploration activities can be extensive and often include provisions for assessment of subsurface conditions as they relate to the mining operation - requirements for ground support. All of these factors are important to the economics of the mine and are well justified. Surface facilities are provided to access and service the mine, and they play an important role in the successful development and operation of a project. Headframes, hoist foundations and shaft collars, in particular, are examples of unique installations encountered at underground mine sites. The design and above-surface behavior of these facilities can be analyzed with the usual fundamental engineering practices employed throughout the engineering professions. However, near surface exploration for the purposes of assessing soil and rock conditions for foundations is often given a reduced priority and less consideration. This article provides an outline of the benefits and importance of performing such exploration. References here relate particularly to shaft headframes, hoists and shaft collars. But the issues raised apply equally to other installations of a similar nature, including milling equipment.

The Research Council of SME, at its Annual Meeting in Reno, NR, in February 1993, held a Research Forum on Technology for the Future. The Forum's purpose was to find out from the members, particularly those from industry, their opinions on research needed in the mineral industries. Panelists were selected for their breadth of knowledge and connections. Many panelists, in turn, solicited opinions from additional contacts. A similar effort is underway with mineral-oriented schools. A parallel mission has been undertaken by the American Mining Congress (AMC) through its Committee on Technology. In particular, AMC is concerned that the needs of industry be transmitted in a timely way to federal agencies, especially the US Bureau of Mines. This article reports to the SME membership the principal findings of the Research Forum. The article is derived from a full report that is available from SME. Many of the calls for research made during the Forum can be clustered into five broad categories. These categories are discussed in the following sections of this article. However, since the time of the Forum, many reviewers of the full report have noticed that fundamental research was not given much emphasis. The Research Council points out that the Forum was organized around industrial needs. There is a call to the academic and research community to organize a similar Forum. The Council emphasizes that this is not the last word on research needs and that the membership is urged to continue to give ideas and opinions to the SME Research Council. There will be an opportunity at its next meeting during the SME Annual Meeting in Albuquerque, NM, Feb. 22, 1994, for open discussion of this report. Because the opinions were intentionally confined to representatives from industry, the problems portrayed and the solutions sought are from the vantage of an operator. It comes as no surprise that many of the espoused research desiderata seek more efficient or cost-effective outcomes for the various mining activities discussed. The order of the Forum was a straightforward set of mining activities: exploration, evaluation, mining and processing.

The Buckskin Mountains Tunnel is a key link in the Bureau of Reclamation's Central Arizona Project. The 22-foot (6.7-m) diameter tunnel is being bored in a north-northwesterly direction through volcanic rock near Lake Havasu in western Arizona. The 6.9-mile (11-km) conveyance tunnel will carry up to 3,000 cfs (85 cu m per sec) of water through the Buckskin Mountains as part of the Granite Reef Aqueduct. The water for the project will be drawn from Lake Havasu behind Parker Dam on the Colorado River and pumped some 800 feet (244 m) above the lake to the inlet portal of the free flow tunnel where it begins its 190-mile (300-km) journey to Phoenix, Arizona, and beyond into Orme Reservoir (figure 1). Precast concrete segments are being used as a single system initial support and final lining in the tunnel being excavated by a tunnel boring machine specially designed and built for the job by The Robbins Company. J. F. Shea Company, Inc., of Walnut, California, is constructing the tunnel for the Bureau of Reclamation.

Several mineral process modeling and simulation packages are currently available for use in evaluating the performance of alternative process flow schemes. A critical link that has been missing from these packages is the ability to quantitatively model the effect of size reduction on the liberation of the valuable and waste minerals in the ore being processed. Although there have been several approaches taken to this problem over the past 25 years, none of them has led to a satisfactory conclusion. A technique was developed for measuring the effective liberation characteristics of magnetic taconite ores, and a program was constructed that makes use of these liberation characteristics in simultaneously simulating both size reduction and mineral liberation as it occurs in tumbling mills. This is an especially important step in the modeling of magnetic taconite processes, where magnetic rejection of low-grade wastes between grinding stages mandates that a predictive capability be available. The current application is specific to magnetic taconite, but it is possible that a similar approach could be used for other types of mineral systems. This work presents a study of characterization of activated carbons for the adsorption of Au(CN)2- complex. A comparative study of six samples of activated carbons, three Brazilian and three produced out of Brazil was made in order to determine their qualification for a performance in adsorption circuits in the extractive metallurgy of gold. The adsorptive capacity and the kinetics of adsorption were compared to the physical and chemical properties of each one. The influence of poluant ions on the kinetics and loading capacity of aurocianyde anion was also determined.

In conjunction with its 1993 Annual Meeting, held Feb. 15-18 in Reno, NV, SME sponsored a symposium, "Conveyor Belt Engineering for the Coal and Mineral Mining Industries." Eighteen papers were presented, grouped into four sessions: Low Tension Drives, High Tension Drives. Novel Techniques and Specifications. Three of the papers have been republished in this issue of MINING ENGINEERING. Brief summaries of the other 15 papers are presented here. (The 193-page symposium Proceedings, edited by Mike Evans of Consol, includes all of these 18 papers and is available from SME. From the waste material of the production of aluminium foil aluminium pigment is produced for the paint industry by grinding it in white spirit. During grinding 1-2 % iron impurity gets into the product, weakening its quality, from the wear of the mill armour and the grinding bodies and from the contamination of the raw material. For deironing the product, a stage-operated electrically induced magnetic filter separator was developed and put into operation. The separator was sited in an explosive environment and therefore required a special design and safety system. The paper describes the results of the development work. the device that was developed, the safety system as well as the results of and experiences with the operation of the separator.

Because of the "energy crisis" emphasis has been placed on bringing coal mines into full production faster. To accomplish this, more is involved than a rapid excavation system. Mine design should have the freedom within the law to customize as mining conditions dictate as long as the maximum safety of the miner is insured. A year ago, safety was the most prominent "social-human factor"--now, safety and energy self-sufficiency are primary to our national policy. The Single Entry research program as designed satisfies both. It investigates the hypothesis that a single-entry system, for longwall development, supported in the center by open cribs and divided by a fire-resistant partition, can be regarded as being equivalent to or better than a multi-entry system. This paper provides an explanation for the use and advantages of a single entry system in development for longwall mining, explains the problems anticipated with single entries and presents the research approach needed to evaluate and solve the problems. Under study are ground control, ventilation, fire and explosions, emergency procedures, and industrial hazards. Described are measurements data on crib and roof bolt loads as entry heading advances and longwall abutment load is superimposed, stress field determinations and preliminary structural analysis of the double and single entry, and methane liberation and ventilation records as entry advances. Some of the mine operation problems and waivers of mining laws will be discussed. This project is a complete system study having progressed approximately two years in a five-year program.

Part one of this two-part series covers conceptualizing and developing a maintenance information system. It explains what information is necessary to manage such a system. Next month, part two will discuss using this type of system with administrative information, including error and absentee reports as well as open work files. Introduction There is no doubt that quality, timely, and accurate information can make a solid contribution to maintenance cost reduction objectives. Yet, despite obvious benefits, methods being used to acquire information systems are proving costly, frustrating, and often unsuccessful. Those needing the information are disappointed. Mine managers, hoping to reduce costs with quality information, are instead seeing no system, no savings, and massive spending on information endeavors of questionable benefit. Options Any software vendor will happily sell you his program. Numerous mining organizations, having "gone to the cleaners" themselves, will gladly make their programs available to help cover huge trial and error development costs. Any package can only be a generalization. Any program bought from some other organization must undergo numerous modifications to make it work properly. In the process the initial cost is doubled. Many mining maintenance organizations do not know how to go about the task of conceptualizing, developing, installing, and effectively using a maintenance management information system. Consequently, many have hedged their primary responsibility of specifying what information they want, how they will get it, and how they will use it effectively. Into this void have jumped many who claim they can help. But some may not understand the special information needs of maintenance in the mining industry. By default, the whole scene of maintenance information systems has become confused and in need of clarification. A Starting Point Four broad phases are used to organize the steps by which maintenance acquires an effective maintenance management information system and initiates its use. Conceptualization is an identification of needs, factors that influence development, and an assessment of support for the system. Development is a plan of action for bringing the conceptualized information system to life. Consideration is given to the practical aspects of collecting field data, processing it, and converting it into useful information. Implementation consists of those actions by which the newly developed system is integrated into the organization and put in the hands of its personnel so that its value can be derived. Use addresses the means by which personnel use the information to accomplish maintenance improvement objectives. These phases are preceded by establishing the need for the information system. They are followed by a requirement to measure its success (Fig. 1). Conceptualizing the Information System Responsibilities - The information system user must acquire the system best suited for its use. A step-by-step process is essential to avoid many serious problems than can easily occur. The most important step is to clearly identify its objectives and lay out a course of action to achieve those objectives. The major reason for the failure to achieve information objectives is not carrying out this responsibility. Maintenance cannot delegate the task to data processing. It can obtain technical assistance but it must retain responsibility. Nor can maintenance purchase

The high-pressure grinding roll was introduced about 10 years ago and has established itself in many applications. Most of these machines are used in grinding circuits in the cement industry. A few operate in conventional mineral-processing plants. Polysius has sold more than 350 Polycoms worldwide. An exception is diamond-ore processing in South Africa and Australia. This type of grinding system increases diamond liberation and reduces the capital costs for the downstream processing plant. There are several reasons why high-pressure grinding rolls have not been used more extensively in the mining industry: - The mining industry adheres to conventional grinding technology and regional preference for certain comminution circuits. - Design, scale-up and flowsheet assessment procedures are viewed as being immature and reduce confidence in the potential application of the technology. - Downstream process benefits are unproven on a plant scale.

In considering the use of underground space for civil works functions, there are several criteria that must be met if transfer of any of them is to occur. It is important to recognize that these criteria involve social and political as well as conventional engineering and economic considerations. It is the purpose of this report to identify certain of these criteria and develop a set of measures that will permit the evaluation of the potential benefit of transferring civil works functions underground. The work reported here was completed for the ASCE and is contained in the report, Undergound Space, 1973. If one examines the total direct and indirect economic return from the location of civil works in subsurface rather than surface space, sizeable benefits accrue. This occurs largely because design, construction, operating and maintenance costs of these systems are highly dependent upon the forces exerted on these systems by the surface enviroment itself. Transferring of these facilities to underground space would eliminate a large segment of those costs. It is equally true that civil works functions compete with other uses for surface space and generate significant conflicts with these competing uses. Highway construction takes land from other productive uses. Electrical transmission lines conflict in terms of safety and aesthetics with adjacent social activities. Assuming that construction costs can be made equivalent, the analyses in the previous report indicate that the locating of all civil works functions underground would yield an annual net savings to the society of the order of 60 billion dollars. Tunnel contracts often include provisions for pre-excavation probing and grouting for areas ahead of the tunnel heading. If grouting triggers are met, tunneling stops, and grouting is performed. There is substantial variation within the underground industry on what criteria are applied to the grout verification hole that is drilled post-grouting and before excavation resumes. The criteria for determination of the effectiveness should be dependent on the geology and local hydrogeologic conditions. The purpose of this paper is to present specific criteria that can be used by a practitioner to determine whether tunneling can resume or if additional grouting is required.

Low world gold prices stimulate development and introduction of economically efficient ( cost saving) technology for operating gold mills. This report covers the results of testing and introduction of CIL technology to recover gold from flotation concentrate of Samarta gold concentration plant located in Buryatia (Russia). This plant is treated the ore of Zun Kholba gold deposit using gravity and flotation of gravity tails as preconcentration processes. Till recently high grade gold gravity concentrate was smelted to gold bullion and shipped to gold refinery, gravity middlings were leached by cyanidation in cone type equipment developed by Irgiredmet and flotation concentrate shipped to copper smelter. The disadvantages of flotation concentrate shipping to copper smelter are following: high concentrate transport cost; problem with gold shipped balance; high cost of flotation concentrate treatment; comparatively low gold recovery. In this connection IRGIREDMET developed the hydrometalurgical technology for gold recovery from flotation concentrate. The flowsheet was developed on the base of laboratory, pilot plant and industrial scale tests conducted by IRGIREDMET in 1987-1997 and lrgiredmet experience on CIP process testing and industrial scale introduction in Yakutia [1-6]. The US Bureau of Mines investigated technologies for determining the integrity of in situ leach mining wells. A self-contained trailer-mounted well integrity testing system (WITS) was designed and built to enable rapid testing of well casings for leaks as required by environmental regulations. The WITS utilizes two inflatable packers to seal off the entire casing length or any portion thereof. Water pressure is built between the packers to the desired test pressure, and the presence or absence of casing leaks is determined by monitoring the pressure drop between the packers. A winch and steel cable are used to run the packers in and out of the well. The WITS underwent an industry field test at the Irigaray in situ uranium leaching mine near Buffalo, WY. A total of 37 wells with an average depth of 69 m (225 ft) were tested at an average rate of four wells per eight-hour shift with a two-person operating crew. This represents a 75% time savings and an 83% labor savings compared to the rigid-pipe method previously used at the mine, with which a three-person crew tested an average of one well per shift.

INTRODUCTION Selective Reduction of Nickel in Oxidized Ores Oxidized nickel ores, either garnieritic or lateritic, contain much more iron than nickel. The regular carbon reduction in an electric furnace is operated in such a manner that the greater part of iron oxides is reduced simultaneously with nickel oxide, resulting in a low nickel content ferronickel. In order that the nickel content of residual slag may be suitably low, -excess carbon must be fed so that the carbon content of the ferronickel thus obtained is that of casting iron. The metal also contains other impurities such as silicon, chrome, etc. In order to convert the casting iron into slightly carburized ferronickel with high nickel content, the greater part of the carbon and more than half the iron contained therein must be oxidized by means of oxygen. Energy is thus consumed as carbon, and power to reduce iron oxides, and more energy is consumed as oxygen to re-oxidize the iron contained. This method can be economically adopted for nickel ores with grades ranging around 2. 5 to 370, but it gets excessively costly when nickel grade falls below these values. This is why, for nickel ores with low nickel grades and high iron content, studies were conducted to develop a selective reduction process which, while reducing only a small part of the iron oxide, would provide efficient reduction of nickel oxide.
