With the passing of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, many utilities are opting to switch to lower sulfur coal to meet new SO2 emissions requirements. This lower sulfur coal may be from new suppliers or it may be from current suppliers that modify existing cleaning plants or build new plants to produce this higher quality coal. New, sophisticated coal cleaning simulators are useful tools for optimizing cod cleaning circuit operating parameters to maximize the production of clean coal that meets more stringent specifications for SO2 emissions potential. The examples in this paper were developed using the Coal Cleaning Simulator (CCS), running under ASPEN PLUS™, that was developed under a Department of Energy project cosponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute. With advanced sensitivity analysis and optimization features, CCS allows a quick, efficient, cost-effective review of coal cleaning plant performance to meet current production goals and to plan future changes in plant operating parameters or circuitry configurations.

Due to declining iron ore grades, low-grade ores with complex mineralogy — namely, banded iron formation (BIF) — are being explored to maximize iron ore resources and increase the life of mine. Flotation is the standard global process used for the beneficiation of BIF ores, as it is a complex ore reserve, and liberation is typically achieved below 1 mm. This study focuses on the flotation of a South African BIF, evaluating its response to different collectors, as well as effect of grind. As flotation is an expensive process and South Africa ranks high on the production cost curve, preconcentration by gravity or magnetic separation is performed prior to flotation. Thus, flotation was also performed on a gravity concentrate to determine if a grade suitable for steelmaking (approximately 63 percent) is achievable. The results indicate that the use of an alkyl ether amine-based collector partially neutralized with acetic acid is suitable for separation of hematite from illite and quartz at high pH values. Further optimization tests are being pursued to improve overall recovery and grade.

Bromide stabilizes the auric or aurous ion by forming a stable complex in acidic aqueous solution. The oxidizing agent normally used for the process is bromine, which is a corrosive liquid with high vapour pressure. This is, in fact, the main reason why it has not found acceptance yet as an industrial oxidant for gold. Ferric ion with hydrogen peroxide and/or sodium hypochlorite have already proved to be effective oxidants for the dissolution of gold from a rotating disc in a bromide-containing aqueous solution. In the present work, preliminary tests with four selected ore samples were tested to evaluate the dissolution of gold with the same system already tested with the rotating disc (Br-/Fe3+/H2o2/NaCIO). Compared to the conventional cyanidation, results were superior in one instance only. The major obstacle seems to be the maintenance of a suitable potential to allow the complex formation. However, the studied system may be interesting, is in some situations it may yield better results than conventional cyanidation; therefore, further investigation seems to be worth doing.

Biooxidation processes for treating arsenical and other types of refractory gold ores are touted by many as being simple, inexpensive and environmentally friendly. One of the advantages claimed by proponents of biooxidation is that arsenic is disposed of as insoluble ferric arsenate which is suitable for long term disposal in tailings ponds. However, there is considerable controversy as to the stability of ferric arsenate with respect to re-dissolution of arsenic. In particular, there is concern that the amorphous ferric arsenate produced at low temperature is not stable, especially at the alkaline pH's required for cyanidation. There is a general lack of published information on the stability of arsenical bioleach tailings. Past work on ferric arsenate stability has usually involved purely chemical systems and the use of synthetically prepared precipitates. Upon completing the Salmita bioleach pilot plant campaign (Hackl and Wright, 1989) the author had the opportunity to test the stability of the arsenical bioleach/cyanide tailings which were produced. This paper summarizes the results of that work.

The two calcium sulfate minerals, gypsum and anhydrite, occur in many parts of the world, and gypsum has long been of economic importance in the family of industrial minerals. Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate (CaSO, . 2H20) and anhydrite, the anhydrous form (CaSO,) are frequently found in close association, and it is seldom that a calcium sulfate deposit will consist exclusively of one mineral or the other. Although known gypsum deposits are extensive, anhydrite makes up the larger part of total calcium sulfate resources. Although it has very minor economic use, it is important to the understanding of gypsum deposits and is referred to frequently in the following discussion. Calcium sulfate is one of the principal constituents of evaporite deposits, and when pure, has the following composition: [ ] Deposits of pure gypsum or of pure anhydrite which are large enough to be considered commercial have not yet been found because of both the metastable relationship between the two minerals, and the presence of impurities such as calcium or magnesium carbonates, chlorides, other sulfate minerals, clay minerals, or silica. Most gypsum produced ranges from 80 to 95% pure and beneficiation is normally limited to selective mining or quarrying or upgrading by crushing and screening during mill processing. END USES The largest use for gypsum is based upon the unique property which calcium sulfate has of readily giving up, or taking on, water of crystallization. With the application of a moderate amount of heat in a process known as calcining, gypsum is converted to plaster of paris, the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate (CaSO4 ½ H2O), which when mixed with water will set or harden as the calcium sulfate returns to the stable dihydrate form. This semifinished product, usually called stucco, is then manufactured into a large variety of plasters, wallboard, and block for construction use, or into plasters for industrial applications. About 75% of the gypsum used in the United States is calcined for these purposes. Uses of uncalcined gypsum are principally as a retarder for portland cement, as a soil conditioner, as a mineral filler, and other minor industrial applications. About 25% of the gypsum mined in the United States goes into these markets; however, in other countries with building practices different from those in the United States and Canada, relative usage varies widely. Calcium sulfate deposits are the world's largest sulfur resources; minor quantities of gypsum and anhydrite have been used to produce sulfur or sulfur compounds. This use is accompanied by a unique site-specific set of economics because sulfur is generally available from non-gypsum sources at lower cost.

Prompt neutron activation probe (PNAP) was evaluated to determine chemical composition of phosphate rock slurry in-situ. The technique was able to precisely analyze Ca, Si and H using a 252Cf source. Direct measurement of P and Mg was not accurate due to interference by the rare earth elements associated with the Florida Phosphate Rock. The solids loading, particle size distribution and flotation reagents present in the slurry had no significant effect on the accuracy of the measurements. The technique was found to be reliable also under industrial conditions.

Zinc cementation of high-temperature carbon eluates is now used extensively in gold processing to replace electrowinning. Under these conditions, zinc consumption is high. In this paper, zinc solubility is press rated us functions of temperature, cyanide concentration and pH in the presence of gold, silver and mercury cyanides (both individually and in combined solutions). Based on the experimental results, cementation of these metals is characterized and discussed. The importance of cyanide concentration in cementation efficiency and the effect of mercury and its co-precipitation onto zinc are also discussed.

This paper summarizes the status of a series of new chemical reagents developed with the explicit goal of expanding the capabilities of existing froth flotation processes as well as allowing for new solid/solid separations to be undertaken that are not now feasible with flotation. The first portion of the paper briefly outlines the theory and motivation behind the development of each new reagent family. 'The second portion of the paper deals with specific laboratory examples of some separation systems studied to date.

This paper studied the flotation separation of feldspar, zircon and kyanite from quartz with a mixture of cationic and anionic collectors. Tests show that collector mixture has specially good effect, using it, the separation of these three silicate minerals from quartz can be successfully achieved at the natural pH value of tap water in the absence of any acid, fluoride and other inorganic reagents. The properties and characteristics of collector mixture were analysed. By means of IR-spectra, ESCA and AES, the action mechanism between collector mixture and minerals was throughoutly studied.

This paper presents the results of a column flotation study on a fine feed sample of Florida phosphate. A central composite design was used to study the main and interaction effects of parameters affecting column efficiency. The statistical design is also used to determine the optimum conditions. The results indicate that, depending on the experimental conditions, it is possible to produce a high-grade concentrate with a high recovery. A 15ppm concentration of nonionic frother was found sufficient to maximize the recovery at pH of 9.5.

HINDERED SETTLING CONCENTRATION In the free settling of mineral particles in a liquid, the falling particles are at a distance from each other so that no particle is affected by its neighbor. In hindered settling, the concentration of particles is sufficiently high so that each particle is affected by its proximity to other particles in the suspension. Richards and Locke86 have described the hindered settling phenomenon as the condition “.. where particles of mixed sizes, shapes and densities in a crowded mass, yet free to move along themselves, are sorted in a rising current of water, the velocity of which is much less than the free-falling velocity of the particles but yet fast enough so the particles are in motion." This is the condition normally encountered in mineral con¬centration processes. The well known Newton equation for free settling of coarse (ap proximately +10-mesh, 1/16-in. or -- 2000-µm) spherical particles is:87 where v," is free settling velocity, cm/sec; p' is density of the fluid; p is density of the particle, g/cm3; d is particle diameter, cm; g is acceleration due to gravity, cm/sec2; and Q is coefficient of resistance, dimensionless, ~0.4. For the settling of fine spheres in water (approximately 150 mesh or 100 µm) the equation of Stokes pertains:87 where µ is viscosity of the fluid in poises and the other symbols have the same meaning as those in Eq. 1. For particles whose size lies between about 10 mesh (--2000 µm) and 150 mesh (100 µm), their settling velocity can be determined from experimental data. These data are available in convenient form in the text by Taggart88 based on the original work of Richards. Alternatively, a Reynolds number-coefficient of resistance plot may be used to determine the settling rate of such particles.87 The settling rate of spherical particles under hindered settling conditions can also be calculated from Eqs. I and 2 by replacing p', the density of the fluid, by p" the apparent density of the suspen¬sion. The concentration of particles in the fluid thus imparts an appar¬ent density to the composite fluid or suspension greater than that of the liquid alone, resulting in a buoyant effect on the larger particles. Particle shape affects the settling rate of both coarse and fine particles. The general effect is to reduce their settling velocities and the effect is greater for coarse particles and for those settling under hindered settling conditions than for fine particles or free settling ones. For two particles of differing densities but settling at the same velocity under Newtonian conditions, the ratio of their diameters from Eq. 1, called the free settling ratio is: where L signifies the lighter particle and H, the heavier particle. Under Stokesian conditions the exponent would be 0.5. For hindered settling conditions the fluid density p' is replaced by the apparent density of the suspension, p", to obtain a generalized equation for the hindered settling ratio: assuming both particles settle in approximately the same regime. The free settling ratio as given by Eq. 3 has been called by Taggart88 the "concentration criterion" and is used to predict the effectiveness of any gravity concentration process (see Introduction to this section). Based on Eqs. 3 and 4, if two particles of densities pH and p,, settle at the same velocity, the diameter of the lighter particle will be larger than that of the heavier particle. For example, in the case of galena (pH = 7.5) and quartz (pL = 2.65) settling in water (p =1.0) under free settling, Newtonian conditions 3.9. Thus, a quartz particle nearly four times as large as a galena particle will settle at the same velocity. Any quartz particle just slightly less than four times the diameter of the largest galena particle may be separated from it. Under hindered settling, Newtonian condi¬tions in a suspension where p" = 1.65, dL/dH = 5.85 or any quartz particle just slightly less than about six times the largest galena particle may be separated from it. Reference to Eq. 4 indicates that a superior separation between two minerals of differing densities is favored by: (1) coarse particles settling under Newtonian conditions, (2) a large difference in (pa - PL), and (3) separation under hindered settling conditions where p" is high. Of course, there are practical limits to increasing p" excessively because at very high percent solids suspen¬sion fluidity would be lost and the hindered settling separation process defeated. Examples of hindered settling separators are the Dorrco-Fahren¬wald sizer,89 the Rheolaveur box 90 the Spitzkasten,89 and the Willoughby washer.91 These devices make a mineral separation on the basis of both specific gravity and size and all of them are essentially obsolete except for the Dorrco-Fahrenwald sizer and similar devices which still find application for the removal of coarse particles from a much finer particle assemblage and for preconcentration ahead of shaking tables. However, nearly all gravity concentration processes (jigs, tables, flowing film concentrators, heavy media separators) and many sizing devices (sizing classifiers, clarifiers, thickeners, hydrosepa¬rators) make use of the hindered settling phenomenon during the separation of particles. Poor plant start-up performance is usually blamed on poor design and unsatisfactory equipment. But, in most cases, the real cause of poor performance is inadequate preparation for operations and maintenance. Inadequate maintenance preparation, unlike inadequate operations preparation, will not immediately manifest itself in a new plant. However, not taking advantage of the window of opportunity afforded a new plant to organize the maintenance operation ensures that the new equipment honeymoon is unexpectedly short. Also, once a plant has entered a “breakdown mode,” it is extremely difficult to turn around.

The purpose of this paper is to present a design procedure for the quantitative estimation of support load requirements in underground mines. Emphasis is upon the basic features of support behavior common to a large variety of support systems-bolts, timber sets, stope fill, steel arches, concrete liners and so forth. A strong reliance is placed upon fundamental principles and modern computing techniques for their quantitative implementation. Example problems illustrate the approach. Where artificial support is required, the ground in the vicinity of the face usually stands unsupported long enough for the support to be installed. At the time of installation, the load transferred to the support from the adjacent rock is essentially zero, although in some cases there may be an initial set load, for example, from timber blocking. With the passage of time and advance of the face, ground motion loads the supports. If the support system is properly designed, then the additional loading poses no threat to the safety and productivity of operations. If not, then difficulties may arise including high maintenance costs, hazardous work conditions and reduced productivity. Of course, over-design can be equally wasteful. Quantitative estimation of support loads is therefore essential to overall efficiency in mining.

Following on from the successful completion of three exploration programs and the discovery of two new inactive Seafloor Massive Sulphide (SMS) deposits within New Zealand?s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), Neptune is now poised to take the next step from explorer to developer. Neptune considers that commercialization of SMS deposits represents the future of the mining industry, providing a new source of metals to the world economy, and enabling host countries to benefit from this new industry. Neptune recognizes that marine biodiversity is among the greatest treasures of New Zealand. The geological isolation, range and complexity of habitats, and a number of major ocean currents that influence New Zealand have created diverse marine communities. Neptune, recognizing both the environmental importance of marine biodiversity and the value it provides to all New Zealanders has made commitments to ensure sustainable development. There are many unanswered questions regarding how the marine environment may be affected by SMS development, however best practice environmental management is a key aspect of the Company?s approach to our activities and the code for ?Environmental Management of Marine Mining? prepared by the IMMS has played a part in this approach. Neptune has close relationships with the scientific community to ensure that appropriate environmental strategies and plans are developed in order to minimize the effects of our activities on the environment.

Laterite ores, rich in essential metals like nickel, iron and cobalt, are a crucial resource for modern technology. However, the extraction of nickel from laterite ores is a complex process due to their intricate mineral compositions and low nickel concentrations. This paper presents the results of a study to understand the leaching behavior of preroasted laterite ore and the impact of roasting on leaching kinetics. The ore was subjected to roasting at 280 and 610 °C for a duration of three hours, followed by leaching in sulfuric acid (H2SO4) under atmospheric conditions. The results show that preroasting the ore at 610 °C significantly improved the recovery of nickel during leaching, with recovery rate of up to 93 percent, and the leaching process of the preroasted ore was primarily controlled by diffusion through the ash layer. The activation energy values were found to be 20.97 kJ/mol for the ore roasted at 280 °C, and 18.97 kJ/mol for the ore roasted at 610°C. These findings suggest that preroasting can enhance the leaching performance of laterite ore, potentially paving the way for more efficient and sustainable nickel extraction processes.

Recent work by Haas has made available information on densities and vapor pressures of solutions of differing salinities at temperatures up to 330°C. From these data it is possible to predict the behavior of volcanic exhalations of various degrees of salinity as they approach the sea floor. Particular attention is devoted to solutions of 5.0 weight per cent NaCl and 20 weight per cent NaCl, two fluids that approximate quite closely the salinities of what Roedder termed: (1) normal hydrothermal fluids and (2) fluids typical of stratiform deposits of low-temperature conditions of origin. It is apparent that solutions above 220-230°C. cannot reach a sea floor on which the depth of water is 600 feet or less in the liquid state but will boil at some appreciable depth beneath the sea floor. Such boiling would result in the precipitation of all constituents of the ore fluids of significantly lower vapor pressure than water. The principal such constituent would be salt, and no sulfide deposits, the major constituent of which is salt are known. It follows, therefore, that ore fluids probably never get close to the sea floor of shallow seas at temperatures high enough to permit boiling. Ore fluids significantly above 230°C. can reach the sea floor in the fluid state only if the depth of the sea in the area. in question is well above 600 feet, for example, solutions at temperatures of ±300°C. reach the sea floor in the liquid state only if the depth of sea water is slightly over 3000 feet. Ore fluids reaching the sea floor at such depths may be the parents of such fluids as the Red and Salton Sea brines. On the basis of these data, the Cyprus and Kuroko deposits are discussed.

Bauxite is derived by surficial weathering of aluminosilicate rock forming minerals under warm and humid climatic conditions. Variations in climate combined with base level changes promote cyclical, evolutionary weathering/concentration patterns, the residual products of which are closely controlled by biological activity. Rock decomposition results mainly from hydrolysis, chelation and solution, the effects being (a) removal of bases and silica in dilute solution, (b) depletion of iron in areas where low pH-Eh prevail and, (c) concentration through direct precipitation, or more generally via intermediate amorphous phases, of aluminium hydrates in variable associations with iron hydrates and clay minerals. Bauxites can be regarded as aluminous soils, and as such they result from cyclic or polygenetic pedogenesis. The ferralitic pedological evolution is essential for bauxite formation. Under some specific conditions, related to local climate and parent rock composition, the podsolic- or andosolic-type of pedogenesis is an effective precursor to bauxitization.

Toxic substances in On solutions can retard biological leaching of sulfide dump ores. On solutions were ana1yzed for metals, organics and chloride and showed inhibitory concentrations of aluminum, manganese and chloride. Inhibition of bacterial activity by the solid fraction of On solution with and without the organic constituents, was evaluated. Bacterial toxicity was evaluated by monitoring bacterial numbers, pH, Eh, and rates of iron oxidation. The On solution solids were toxic at 50% to 60% of their field concentration. Most of the toxicity of the On solution was due to the organic fraction. Different solvent extraction (SX) reagents show varying degrees of inhibition of T. ferrooxidans. Bacterial inhibitory effects of carriers and lixiviants used in the SX plant should be determined so that entrained SX reagents do not retard biological dump leach systems. The reagents used should be the most cost-effective and the least toxic.

Acid mine drainage is still a common problem in the northern Appalachian high sulfur coal region despite mining and reclamation practices applied to control it. Mining companies must treat water with alkali to raise pH and precipitate metals in order to discharge the water into receiving streams. Common chemicals used to treat drainage are limestone, hydrated lime, soda ash briquettes, caustic soda, and ammonia. Each chemical has advantages or disadvantages under specific conditions. A simple spreadsheet program was developed to evaluate costs of treating acid mine drainage across several specified water quality parameters and time horizons. Caustic soda and soda ash were shown to be cost effective for treating low flows and low acidity over short time periods. However, as quantity of water increased, quality decreased, and time horizon increased, the ammonia and hydrated lime systems were found to be much cheaper than caustic soda.

In 1996, O&K Orenstein and Koppel Inc. announced big plans to increase its presence in the US mining market. Even though the company, a part of Ger- man-based O&K Mining GmbH, has been in the United States for about 100 years, it has lived in relative anonymity. That despite being one of the largest makers of hydraulic mining shovels and excavators in the world. The plan must be working. In the 14 months through December 1996,O&K increased its sales to surface mines and quarries in the United States by 250'70, according Rolf Weber, company president. "In the next five years, we anticipate total revenue from our US operations will grow from the current $50 million to $200 million," he said. "Toward that end, we have concentrated our efforts on the supply of reliable, high-output machinery and responsive service after the sale."
