The Montgary pegmatite is located at Bernic Lake in the southeastern Manitoba pegmatite district. 'It has a complex internal structure with several contrasting mineral assemblages. The pegmatite contains a number of potentially valuable miners including spodumene, amblygonite,. lepidolite, zinnwaidite, pollucite and beryl.. The distribution of each of these within the pegmatite is related to the internal structure and controlled by a specific mineral assemblage. Parts of the pegmatite contain a high concentration of spodumene. The pollucite occurrence is of unique character and is one of the largest known deposits of this mineral. The pegmatite is still-like in attitude with a maximum dip of about 15 degrees. Its contents with the amphibolitic wall rocks are sharp and tourmalinized. Mineral assemblages present include perthite-plagioclase-quartz-muscovite, spodumene-microcline perthite-plagioclase-quartz-muscovite, cleavelandite-lithia micas-quartz, quartz-amblygonite, albite, lepidolite, pollucite, and quartz assemblages. The occurrence and relationships of these are described and possible relationships between attitude and internal structure are discussed. Many features of the pegmatite suggest that the deposit formed by crystallization and differentiation of a pegmatitic fluid in a restricted system. These features are discussed. The nature and occurrence of the pollucite, lepidolite and albite assemblages are such, however that it is difficult to visualize them resulting from such a system. These assemblages may be of later replacement origin. The source of the, late, alkali-rich replacing solutions may be unmixing of soda and the rarer alkalis (lithium, rubidium, caesium) from earlier-formed silicates in a manner analogous to the unmixing of soda feldspar in perthites. Various aspects of this hypothesis are examined.

This paper discusses the process utilized by the City of Portland Oregon’s Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) to procure and compensate Impregilo-SA Healy (I/H)for the West Side Willamette River Combined Sewer Over?ow (CSO) Project. The contract method is a three-phase process consisting of qualifications based contractor procurement, pre-construction phase design assistance/construction planning, and facility construction where the contractor is compensated on a cost reimbursable-fixed fee basis. The paper focuses on pre-construction phase lessons learned from the development of the contract general conditions, establishment of a construction budget and cost control program, incorporation of contractor recommended design changes, and development of a subcontractor procurement program for construction.

It is generally accepted that sulfur exists in coal in three forms: (1) pyritic, (2) organic, and (3) sulfate sulfur. Sulfate sulfur usually makes up less than 1% of the total sulfur content. Pyritic and organic sulfur, make up almost all of the total sulfur and occur in varying amounts in different coals and can vary greatly in coal of the same seam Pyritic sulfurs of 20% to 80% of the total sulfur have been reported Other authors have shown that it is not possible to remove the organic sulfur without chemically altering the coal. Chapman and Jones (1) state: "Organic sulfur, unlike pyritic sulfur does not exist as discrete particles, but is intimately associated with the coal structure, and as such it is not possible to remove it or reduce its concentration by physical means." Any success in removing sulfur has come about by removing pyritic sulfur by physical means; therefore, removal of sulfur in the pyritic form is the subject of this investigation. The extent to which any impurities can be removed from a particular coal can be determined by a washability study. Outside of crushing coal, to finer sizes or chemically altering the coal, there are no known methods of changing this inherent washability characteristic. The efficiency of various methods used to remove impurities can be determined by comparison of results produced at a yield to the results as shown by a washability study. In recent years heavy media processes have proven their ability to wash plus 28 mesh coal and nearly produce results shown to be theoretically possible by the washability study. Therefore, it is the objective of this paper to show various methods of treating the finer fractions of the coal, in the hope of developing a process, which can effectively produce in the fine fractions the efficiency of heavy media devices in the coarse.

Introduction The feeding to zero concept involves feeding 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) size raw coal to heavy media (magnetite) cyclones along with the +600 µm (+28 mesh) size coal. Traditional circuits employ desliming or removing the 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) size fraction and feeding the cyclones +600 µm (+28 mesh) size coal. The feeding to zero concept recirculates 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) fines in the circuit. At the same time, a portion of the fine material is continuously withdrawn and recovered. This, in turn, prevents a fines buildup. This concept eliminates desliming screens and secondary fines circuitry for recovery of 600 x 150 µm (28 mesh x 100 mesh) coal. The result is a very simple circuit. Feeding to zero at Island Creek Island Creek Corp. was the first involved with the new concept in 1976. The company needed a temporary plant for the 9.5 mm x 0 (0.4 in. x 0) raw coal at its Pond Fork mine, near Madison, WV, while a full-scale plant was being designed and built. At that time, the Childress Corp., of Beckley, WV, became interested in the feeding to zero concept. Island Creek awarded a contract to Childress to build a single cyclone modular plant, incorporating this feeding to zero concept. The plant was erected in three months. The Pond Fork modular plant proved successful in attaining the desired feed rate of about 63.5 t/h (70 stph), while maintaining good separating efficiencies and low magnetite consumption rates. The 9.5 mm x 150 µm (0.4 in. x 100 mesh) clean coal was recovered and the 150 µm x 0 (100 mesh x 0) size was disposed of to waste. The full-scale plant was completed about two years later and the Pond Fork modular plant was moved to Holden, WV. There, it was incorporated into the Holden 29 preparation plant as a separate circuit for cleaning -25 mm (-1 in.) coal. In 1976, a similar plant was installed in Virginia by another company. These two plants are believed to be the first two operational plants in the United States incorporating the feeding to zero concept. Island Creek subsequently contracted with Childress for an identical plant at the Coal Mountain operation in West Virginia. The plant operated for three years before the mine was closed. The unit was then moved to the Spurlock mine near Martin, KY where it continues to operate. The successful operation of the Pond Fork and Coal Mountain plants before and after relocation proved both the performance and moveability of this type of circuit when constructed in a modular fashion. Since the first two plants were built, Island Creek has incorporated the feeding to zero circuit in nine additional plants. A grand total of 33 cyclones have been installed using this concept. One is the Providence mine, near Providence. Providence preparation plant Island Creek contracted with J.O. Lively Corp. of Glen White, WV in July 1978 for the construction of the Providence preparation plant. The plant began operation in February 1979. The construction period was about halved by building the plant with modular design concepts. Prefabricated sections, floors, and sides were brought in as units and then bolted in place. The Providence plant has a good track record of processing coal at a feed rate of 454 kt/h (500 stph). Feed coal to the plant has an average ash content of about 18% and sulfur content of about 4.5%. It contains about 22% refuse. The coal product has an average ash content of about 8% and sulfur content is about 3%. Raw West Kentucky No. 9 seam coal is conveyed from a box cut in the Providence mine to a rotary breaker. The breaker is fitted with 74 mm-diam (3 in.-diam) opening breaker plates. Today's increasing needs for rapid excavation have stimulated efforts to break rocks without explosives. The application of electric energy for this purpose has been studied by a number of investigators. Following principles have been used in electrical rock breaking: 1. induction heating5 2. high frequency heating4, 14 3. microwave heating6 4. contact resistance heating9,12 5. resistance heating11,13 6. electron beam heating1, 3 7. plasma jet heating2, 8 8. arc heating7 9. condensor discharge energy14 In this paper the presentation of the principles of electrical fragmentation is limited to a process called "electrofracing". This technique uses electrical heating of rock by electrode contact resistance9 and resistance heating" phenomena. The electrically induced stresses inside of rock generate forces which break up the material. The fracturing of ore takes place by tensile stresses instead of compressive forces. The electric energy merely creates fractures in the rock and the separation of fractured material takes place by subsequent mechanical handling. Energy requirements in secondary breaking of iron ores have been about one to two kilowatt-hours per ton of ore. Power requirement is a function of the degree of fragmentation.

Current approaches to reclaiming acid generating tailings include permanent water cover or encapsulation with various synthetic liners and/or clay. Although these methods can be effective, some ongoing maintenance will be required in perpetuity to ensure that water levels are adequately maintained or that the integrity of any capping system is protected. The successful creation of wetlands in tailings basins offers the possibility of creating a stable environment for the tailings with minimal maintenance. Acid-generating tailings from a massive zinc sulfide deposit in Winston Lake, Ontario, were placed in small cylindrical tanks to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of creating wetlands and mitigating acid and metal release. Two uncovered controls were established in addition to the five treatments, which were done in duplicate. Each wetland tank was 117 cm in diameter and contained 6 1 cm of tailings. Treatments included 61 cm cover of wetland soil, 61 cm of glacial till, 61 cm of tailings, and two tanks with 71 cm of water. One of the water covers included the aquatic macrophytes: Elodea canadensis, Potamegeton sp., and Ceratophyllum demersum. Cattails (Typha latifolia) were planted in the plots with substrate cover, and the initial water level was set at ten centimeters. The pH within the tailings in the treated tanks generally ranged between 6.0 and 6.5 and zinc concentration ranged from 0.02 to 0.1 mg/L. The drainage from the controls had an average pH of 3.3, and 7,700 mg/L of zinc.

Chemical and radioisotope stratification studies were carried out in an abandoned uranium tailings pile at Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada. The tailings, with an average thickness of 7 m over an area of 16 hectares, were deposited approximately 20 years ago on a layer of black peaty material which overlays deposits of permeable glaciofluvial sands. Geohydro-chemical investigations of this tailings area have been ongoing since 1978. The radioisotope profile study was conducted on three adjacent sites. Solid core samples, collected with a split spoon sampler at various depths, were analyzed for various chemical and radioisotope constituents. The results indicated by 2 distinct zones of stratification; an upper zone, where the constituents were uniformly distributed, and a lower zone, near the peat-tailing interface, which showed increasing concentration with depth. Within the peat layer, the concentration decreased rapidly with no significant levels of contaminant penetration below the peat layers observed, though the samples were limited. The pH profile showed that the top 5 m of the tailings have been oxidized, the average soil pH in this zone was 3.4 compared to 5 .8 underneath it. The groundwater hydrology of the system was observed to be complex showing downward and lateral flow in the dry season and lateral and upward flow during the spring and periods of heavy rainfall. The results are discussed in terms of a model based on the combined segregation and settling process of the tailings fine fraction, and the geohydro-chemical interaction of the solid and liquid phases.

The solution of the dynamic population balance model (PBM) of a closed grinding network consisting of a mill, sump, and cyclone is problematic. The fact that the dynamic PBM model equation solution to the Inverse Problem for grinding systems is degenerate or underspecified is demonstrated. Two numerical solution approaches to the Inverse Problem are used. These are: 1) providing additional constraints on breakage selection functions or 2) performing the Arbiter-Bhrany (or other) normalization of the selection functions. Actual experimental anthracite batch grinding data is used to demonstrate the non-unique functionality of the batch dynamic mill selection and breakage functions for a real physical system. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained non-linear equations is used to solve the batch dynamic PBM grinding equations to obtain the grinding selection and breakage rate functions. Different solutions to the same PBM transport equations are provided. The mill, sump and hydrocyclone were modeled as a CSTR operating at various retention times. Batch dynamic PBM data was used to provide the mill kinetic and breakage selection function data. Two different solutions were obtained depending on the numerical solution approach. The severity of the non-uniqueness problem for dynamic grinding is demonstrated. Each solution approach to a dynamic PBM with transport, while giving the same prediction for a single batch grinding time, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition for other grinding times. This fact makes dynamic nodal analysis and control problematic. The fact that the constraint solution approach gives a solution may suggest that normalization for closed networks is not necessary. Differences in solutions to the PBM cannot be excused away by inaccuracies in the data used to model the grinding phenomenon.

Introduction In April 1998, AIS Sommer GmbH of Germany delivered the first laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) analyzer to the mining industry. LKAB's Kiruna iron ore mine in Sweden shared the costs and the risk of building the prototype. This marks the beginning of LIF analysis as a technique for quality control in mining and mineral processing. Photoluminescence analysis is well established. In most laboratories, fluorescence spectrometers are standard equipment for quality or pollution control. LIF is being used in several applications, including combustion studies and particle image velocimetry. However, it has mostly been used in laboratory environments. The availability of rugged lasers for industrial use brings this powerful tool to the forefront of production, even in the rough conditions found in mining and minerals processing. Laser-induced fluorescence Basics. Fluorescence of naturally occurring minerals has fascinated man since scientific investigation of this phenomenon commenced about 200 years ago. However, importance in industrial application and peripheral activities. Hand sorting of ore under ultraviolet (UV) lamps is seen as an archaic method. Long gone are the days when geologists set out at night with UV hand lamps to find valuable ore deposits, especially those of tungsten. Today, fluorescent minerals are considered collectors' items and museum exhibits. In the late 1960s (Hemphill, 1968) and during the 1970s, attempts to use lasers for excitation of fluorescence in minerals led to the development of an airborne fluorosensor (Seigel and Robbins, 1980). However, this prospecting technology did not gain industry acceptance and vanished from the market. During the past seven years, ongoing research of the LIF of minerals resulted in new findings that give good reason to revive the interest in fluorescence and its use in the mineral industries (Broicher and Zydek, 1995; Broicher, 1998). Fluorescence is defined as the short-lived form of photoluminescence, in which matter emits visible radiation during and after irradiation with light – the fluorescence generally being of a longer wavelength than the irradiation. Fluorescence of matter is described by: • the absorption spectrum, • the emission spectrum, • the decay curve and • the quantum efficiency. The absorption spectrum shows the fluorescence intensity in a fixed spectral band as a function of the excitation wavelength, while the emission spectrum shows the fluorescence intensity at varying emission wave- lengths for a fixed excitation wavelength (Fig. 1). The decay curves describe the exponential decrease of the fluorescence intensity with time. The quantum efficiency is the ratio of irradiating energy to emitted energy. Reduction bleaching is used to improve the brightness and color of the kaolin pigments sold to the paper and speciality industries. The bleach re¬duces the iron oxide associated with kaolin deposits to a colorless form by the following reaction: Na2S2O42+ 6Fe+3 + 4 H2O -> 2 NaHSO4 + 6Fe+2 + 6H+ (Conley et al., 1964). At present, sodium hydrosulfite is used by the kaolin industry as the reductive bleach. It is often purchased commercially as a liquid solution and added into an acidified slurry. Before the use of commercial sodium hydrosulfite, kaolin plants manufactured zinc hydrosulfite on site by adding zinc dust to sulfurous acid made by passing SO2 gas into water. This process was abandoned in the 1970s due to environmental concerns about zinc in waste waters. In the 1970s, Engelhard patented a process that made sodium hydrosulfate from an iron hydrosulfate (Tiethof, 1978). Difficulties with separating the iron hydroxide byproduct from the bleach and a decrease in the cost of commercial bleach caused the project to be abandoned.

The reaction mechanism for the cathodic decomposition of pyrrhotite in deoxygenated solutions at natural, near neutral pH levels was studied using potential and cyclic voltammetric measurements. Reaction products on the pyrrhotite surfaces were examined by Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES), by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and by analyzing the voltammograms for the electron balance of the reactions. Surface properties of the pyrrhotite/solution interface were characterized using an ac impedance technique. The parameters of an equivalent circuit were determined by the nonlinear least-squares fit (NLLSF) technique. The effect of cathodic polarization on floatability was investigated by performing microflotation tests. Possible implications to the flotation separation of chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite ores are discussed.

The adhesion (and de-adhesion) of Bacillus subtilis to dolomite was determined under a number of conditions of initial concentration of the organism, agitation, mineral particle size and temperature. Rate equations curves for both adhesion and de-adhesion were constructed, with the rates of de-adhesion being about half that of adhesion. From the temperature data the energy of adhesion was determined to be about 1.02 kcal/mol. Adhesion of dolomite to B. subtilis follows a Langmuir isotherm. Equilibrium constants, adhesion capacity and Gibbs free energy of adhesion of B. subtilis to dolomite (at pH 6.6) were determined. These values were compared to similar data for adhesion of B. subtilis to apatite and dolomite.

This paper documents empirical evaluations of geochemical data that was recorded during a seven year pilot scale experiment. The experiment was aimed at assessing the effectiveness of natural soil covers for rehabilitation of coal discard facilities. Ten test cells were constructed using different natural soil cover materials and configurations. Results of the evaluation indicate that, although a pH breakthrough was not recorded for the single layer soil cover cells as was the case with the uncovered cells, single soil covers were not effective in preventing ARD oxidation processes. Multi layered soil covers were found to be able to create anaerobic conditions leading to a reduction in ARD oxidation processes and an improvement in leachate quality.

Fluid flow phenomena and therefore the flotation efficiency of air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) flotation are strongly dependent on the operating and design variables such as air flow rate, slurry flow rate, underflow and overflow opening areas, percent solids in the feed, reagent levels, particle size, ASH length, etc. Time-averaged multiphase flow characteristics, as deter-mined by x-ray CT and described in a previous publication, are used to understand and explain the steady-state ASH flotation of quartz. A detailed parametric study of quartz flotation by a nominal 2-inch diameter air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH-2C) revealed the influence of these variables on the flotation response which is discussed in terms of the multiphase flow characteristics. Thus, a phenomenological description of quartz flotation has been established to assist in the further development and utilization of the ASH technology.

The responses of calcite, feldspar, and quartz minerals In a laboratory free fall electrostatic separator, before and after tribocharging with stainless steel, PVC, and copper plates, have been investigated. The effect of H3BO3 and BaCl2 chemicals pre-treatment on the electrical properties of the minerals is examined. The changes in the electrical properties are discussed with the determined charge, dielectric constant, and electrical conductivity of the mineral samples. Electrical properties of the minerals and their responses to the electrical field during separation, after tribocharging and chemical pre-treatment, are explored for the need to characterize the electrical behaviour of the minerals.

This paper will focus on the original intent of the models and explore the additional, unforeseen value they provided throughout the design and construction process.

Outokumpu introduced Flash Flotation in the early l 980's for the recovery of floatable material from grinding circuits. The devel­opment came as a result of surveys made in the company's own concentrators, initiated to find ways of improving recoveries with increasingly complex and lower grade feeds. Hydrocyclones make a separation on the basis of particle size and mass, resulting in the "over collection" of fine grained, high S.G. particles. Minerals such as pentlandite, galena and gold are easily caught in the circulating load around the mill until they are overground and rendered more difficult to collect. In the case of downstream flotation this may simply involve a reduction in the rate coefficient due to the finer sizes or, as is commonly experienced in gold operations, the mate­rial is slimed and coated onto non-floating gangue and is eventual­ly lost to tails. At the time of Outokumpu's plant surveys, it was a relatively common practice, particularly in Pb operations, to have a flotation section fed directly from the secondaiy mill discharge. This is called unit flotation and certainly provided an improvement but very high wear rates and frequent sanding out of the cells was com­mon. The development of the SkimAir® Flash Flotation cell by Outokumpu provided a subtle but quite dramatic departure from the unit cell approach. Now it was possible to feed cyclone under­flow into a special purpose-built flotation machine and recover a final grade concentrate from the grinding circuit (see Figure I). The cell was designed to handle the coarse circulating load, per­mitting the coarsest fractions to be short-circuited back to the mill and retain the floatable sizes for a nominal time of 30 seconds to several minutes. The short retention time was possible largely due to the relatively clean content of the cyclone underflow stream. This means that the fine gangue is not present except in small quan­tities and most of the fine to mid-size paiiicles are higher S.G. and more likely represent valuable mineral. This condition provides for very high rate coefficients. Typical operations would recover 40-60% of the valuable mineral in this fashion and improvements in recovery were typically from 2-5% for sulphide minerals to the 5-20% range for gold and silver.

Almost 100 sedimentation ponds were conceptually designed for a large surface mining study area in northeast Texas. An approximate procedure was developed to economically estimate construction quantities in order to predict surface water control costs. This procedure utilized site-specific empirical relationships developed from detailed analyses on a representative number of proposed sedimentation ponds. Use of these equations provided earthwork volumes, and spillway pipe lengths. The procedure developed for this study is presented along with the results of a verification analysis.

Flotation data indicate that sulfonate and dodecylamine adsorb physically on Mn02 at ambient temperature. Oleate also adsorbs physically if the zero-point-of-charge of the Mn02 is sufficiently high. Chemisorption of oleate apparently occurs between pH 8 and 9, and this phenomenon is enhanced considerably at elevated temperature.

What is the most economical way of tunneling in mixed ground that may experience high pressures? Non-continuously pressurized, mixed ground Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are being utilized to deal with a wide range of geology. Continuous improvements in these mixed ground machines allow for ever-increasing efficiency and reduction of project risk due to unexpected conditions. We will explore the performance of recent mixed ground machines throughout the world and then look at how new improvements to mixed ground machines will enable excavation of an expanded range of ground conditions. These conditions include mixed ground with low fines, mixed face rock, and fracture/fault zones with high pressures where in the past a Slurry TBM may have been utilized.
