A process for the separation and recovery of cobalt and nickel was optimized for a sulfate leach solution of Indian Ocean sea nodules containing 80 g/m3 cobalt and 730 g/m3 nickel using the sodium salt of Cyanex 272 as the extractant. Extraction of both cobalt and nickel increased with an increase in equilibrium pH and extractant concentration. The extracted species with respect to cobalt appears to be CoA2.3HA. More than 99.6% extraction of cobalt was achieved using 0.04M solvent in a three-stage counter current simulation at the A:O phase ratio of 3:2. The co-extraction of nickel was about 0.6% only. Two-stage countercurrent stripping of cobalt from the loaded organic at an A:O ratio of 1: 7 resulted in a pregnant electrolyte enriched by 0.8 kg/m3, thus enabling a ten times overall enrichment of cobalt. From the cobalt free raffinate, nickel extraction was carried out using 0.25M solvent in two countercurrent stages, and the extraction showed a 99.8% recovery. Stripping of nickel from the loaded solvent was carried out at an equal phase ratio with the advance electrolyte of pH 1.75 in two countercurrent stages. The nickel stripping efficiency was found to be 98.8%. The present studies indicated that complete recovery of cobalt and nickel was possible using nine counter-current stages.

Electromagnetic energy emitted from electronic devices has been known to interfere with other electronic systems, hindering their ability to function properly. Mines have many electronic devices critical to the health and safety of mine workers that could be negatively affected by electromagnetic interference (EMI). To ensure that devices are electromagnetically compatible, tests must first be conducted to measure emissions and check for immunity. Standards are available across multiple industries that prescribe emission limits and test methods for electronic devices. A literature review was conducted in this study, and an overview of EMI standards in other industries is provided. Also, an example of how a standard can be applied to mining equipment is presented.

The important carboxylic acid components of tall oils were tested individually as phosphate flotation reagents. These included C18 unsaturated fatty acids and C10 to C18 saturated fatty acids and resin acids. These experiments were conducted to evaluate such factors as the degree of unsaturation, hydrocarbon chain length, isomeric form, side-group modification, and cyclic structure. The effects of mineralogical characteristics on flotation response also were considered. The results of this systematic evaluation provide guidelines for selecting efficient substitute reagents and also provide fundamental data for further research on improved flotation technology.

The effect of pretreatment potential on the response of a gold electrode for Eh measurements in sulfide solutions was examined in terms of measured Eh values and electrode response time. The electrode response time is defined as the time required for the electrode to reach a steady-state value. The relationship between measured Eh values and the hydrosulfide ion concentration is established. The effect of pH, the reversibility of the gold electrode in the sulfide solutions, and the reproducibility of measurements are also investigated. A mixed potential theory is proposed to explain the observations.

In the course of the grinding experiments conducted at Climax over the past twenty years one interesting phenomenon was discovered. This was that balls made of certain types of steel grind more ore than some others. The most significant variation was found in the results secured with a hard alloyed forged bail compared with the forged carbon ball supplied by most ball manufacturers These findings were confirmed in many repeated controlled tests. The value of these tests depends on the methods used, the facilities available and the care with which the investigations were conducted. These are described in the following. This testing has largely been done in eight 91 x 81 low discharge ball mills in closed circuit with 7811 duplex screw classifiers. The mills run at 20 RPM on a feed approximately minus 3/8 inch. The ore is ground through 28 - 35 mesh in one stage. Each mill and auxiliary classifier is in a separate, parallel grinding and flotation section The, ore to each: section is the same in every particular and is fed to each mill bin from a common conveyor tripper. The ore from the bin to the ball mill is weighed on a conveyor scale. The power input to each mill motor is determined with a watt hour meter which measures the power to the mill motor only. Both the scales and meters are checked periodically by standard methods and have been found to give consistent readings. Automatic samplers are employed on each section to obtain accurate measurement of the size reduction. A size analysis of the classifier overflow is made each shift and a composite size analysis is obtained from a weighted average of the various shift analyses. The mills are driven by 450 horsepower synchronous motors so that there is no speed variation and shell liner age is kept as nearly the same as possible in mills under test. The same set of operators is assigned to a mill under test as to the control mill. In all other particulars such as ball load, mill density, liner design, etc., the mills are operated in precisely the same manner. This is an ideal arrangement for plant testing. From observations of ball mill performance over the past twenty years, it is the opinion of the operating staff that variations of as little as one to two percent in mill capacities may be determined if sufficient operating hours are devoted, to a test. Relations between mill capacities, fineness of grinds and power consumptions have been established with a high degree of accuracy. In Table I are given the figures for one test. These show that while the grind with the hard ball was slightly coarser, the tons ground per hour was 5.4 percent greater with the soft ball, and 6.1 percent greater on the basis of minus 100 mesh produced. The power consumed per ton with the hard ball was 4.4 percent greater on a tons per hour basis. The soft ball was inferior in wearing qualities and steel consumption per ton of ore was 24 percent greater with it. In this test the mills were charged with the two different balls for a period of three months to allow the ball loads to come to equilibrium. In Table II are given the specifications of the two balls. The difference in grinding rates may be accounted for by the nature of the ball surfaces. The surfaces of the soft balls after being worn a while are rougher to the touch. Enlarged photographs of the worn-in surfaces of hard and soft balls are shown in Figure I. These show the presence of scratches or skid marks on the hard ball surface which indicates less nipping effect. The Climax ore pulp has a pH of 6.0 and is in a dispersed state. The viscosity is low compared with most ores especially those that are conditioned with lime. This would lower the tendency of the pulp to adhere to the balls with a lower grinding efficiency as a result. It was also thought that the relative rates of wear from surface to center might affect the make-up of an equilibrium ball charge. This probably has little effect on capacity as shown by the size analyses of the two ball charges in Table III. This hypothesis was subsequently investigated by the use of rationed charges. Natural zeolites are gaining recognition as an important commodity with an increasing number of industrial and consumer applications. This potential has prompted the Anaconda Minerals Company and other firms to investigate occurrences and markets for zeolites. The deposits of mordenite-rich tuff at Rome are of interest for their economic potential and for the excellent opportunity they provide to study a zeolite deposit formed in a hydrologically closed basin. Location The Rome property is located approximately 9 km west of Rome, Oregon, in Townships 31S. and 32S., Range 41E., Malheur County. It lies within the Owyhee Uplands of the northern Basin and Range physiographic province (Figure 1). The area discussed here includes a major portion of the depositional basin in which the zeolitic tuffs occur.

"The proposed Baltimore Red Line light rail system includes a 3.4 mile downtown tunnel (DTT) with five underground stations. The design of the underground stations involved overcoming several challenges, including limited right-of-way, high groundwater and uplift pressures, and metamorphic rock within the station depths. An innovative design was developed to maximize the internal station space while minimizing cost. The station designs use slurry walls for temporary and permanent support and groundwater control. Depths within rock are supported with cast-in-place concrete walls, the thickness of which are minimized through the use of permanent rock anchors for support of the rock mass and slurry wall toes. Permanent tiedown anchors are used for uplift resistance, which minimizes the station depths, volume of rock excavation, and the volume of deadweight concrete. Design considerations regarding individual elements and overall integration of the slurry walls, CIP walls, and multiple anchor types are presented.INTRODUCTION The Baltimore Red Line (BRL) project is a proposed light rail transit line for the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) that runs east to west through Baltimore City and County. The project includes the Downtown Tunnel (DTT) consisting of 3.0 miles of twin running tunnels, two portals, five underground stations, and a pedestrian tunnel, as shown in Figure 1. The tunnels have an outside diameter of 21.8 feet and are designed to be mined using pressurized face tunnel boring machines (TBMs). The stations, portals, and the pedestrian tunnel are designed as cut-and-cover structures using slurry walls (concrete diaphragm walls) for both temporary support of excavation (SOE) and permanent structural walls. The dimensions of the five underground stations are summarized in Table 1. Design challenges included limited right-of-way (ROW), challenging soils conditions, strong metamorphic rock within the station depths, and high groundwater conditions. The final station designs included innovative use of slurry walls, tieback anchors, rock anchors, and tiedown anchors."

Clinoptilolite zeolite may offer attractive, cost-effective alternatives for remedial cleanup of old minesites, smelters and other sites with heavy metal contamination. Previous research demonstrates the relatively strong affinity of clinoptilolite for numerous metals and clinoptilolite displays a particularly strong affinity for lead (Loizidou and Townsend, 1987), one of the most toxic and problematic heavy metals. Since clinoptilolite can also selectively absorb some radionuclides and organic compounds, it may offer practical solutions to a wide variety of environmental problems.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Homestake Mining Co., and the University of Utah, is conducting a field demonstration to evaluate the behavior of rock masses supported with cable bolts. One of two rock masses being studied is supported with both conventional and birdcage cables. This rock mass is located between the 6500 and 6650 levels of the 45-4BN stope. 21 ledge. The second rock mass is the hanging wall of the D-limb stope between the 3500 and 3650 levels near the Ross Shaft and is supported with conventional cables. The primary objectives of the project are to monitor the behavior of the two rock masses during mining using extensometers and cable support strain gauges, after which the rock will be modeled using the finite-element code UTAH III. Field data will be used to verify the modeling. In addition. a comparison between the effectiveness of conventional and birdcage cables will be made.

When the oxidized surface gold deposits are mined out, the underlying refractory gold ores become the challenge of treat­ment systems. The size and value ofrefractory gold ore reserves are a function of recovery efficiency and operating cost. The start-up of LURGI's gold roasters at NEWMONT's Carlin site has established whole ore gold roasters as a key to high gold recoveries. The ores from several deposits of the Carlin trend are roast­ed utilizing LURGI / NEWMONT technology, which has achieved gold recoveries approaching 95%. This is in dramatic contrast to the traditional perception that roasting is limited to gold recoveries in the mid 80's. Extensive investigation in pilot scale is required to achieve stable high gold recoveries for most variables in the ore body. The key question for all pilot tests is the classic question of (ROM) run of mine ore roasting or concentrate roasting. All variables are dominated by the leaching/ recovery char­acteristics of the natural ores. The degree ofrecovery improve­ment by roasting / calcining establishes the frame of the eco­nomical conditions. The full range of flexibility is required for the design of the plant to allow for ore variations in heat values, combustible con­tents, agglomeration behavior and off-gas composition. The variables in the ore body influence, therefore, the price of the plant proportionally to its flexibility. Concentrates are usually fairly stable in composition, com­bustion behavior, heat values and particle size since they are a product of the very selective flotation process. Flotation is not the successful process step when the tailings remain high in refractory gold contents.

It derives an analytical model of slump flow for yield stress, providing a theoretical basis for quantifying the rheological properties of paste with slump flow. The study uses three different tailings-prepared pastes and constructs an empirical yield stress model, showing high accuracy and good generality.

This study applies a machine-learning technique known as multiclass logistic regression on a 10-year injury dataset from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to determine miners’ susceptibility to injury and to help identify significant risk factors associated with different classes of injury. The analysis identifies specific risk factors that influence a mineworker’s susceptibility to a given class of injury: nonfatal with no days lost or restricted activity; nonfatal with days lost and/or days of restricted work activity; and fatal and total permanent or partial permanent disability. These factors include miner’s age, mine type (coal versus noncoal), experience on the current job (years), shift start time, employment type (operator versus contractor), mining district and type of accident. The results of the analysis indicate that a miner’s experience on the job (the number of years worked in a current job) is a significant risk to injury occurrence, even for those with decades of total mining experience.

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the application of thermal fragmentation in Australian hard-rock, underground, narrow-vein mining. Two geologically similar samples from an underground, narrow-vein, hard-rock gold mine were collected to obtain a measure of the technology’s ability to recover ore by the creation of large thermal openings to assess the applicability of the thermal method.

Choosing the right valve for corrosive, abrasive slurry applications requires exacting analysis and a comprehensive understanding of the complete slurry process. Within the realm of flow control in abrasive and corrosive slurry applications, there is no room for a one-size-fits-all approach. To ensure minimal maintenance, maximum uptime and the lowest overall cost of ownership, the slurry processing toolbox must contain countless alloy and elastomeric pairings ? each carefully targeted to the particular process medium and conditions. The transfer of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers of collector molecules to the surface of mineral crystals is an excellent method for the study of collector adsorption phenomena and is of particular significance in the understanding and development of improved flotation separations. The fatty acid/fluorite and amine/sylvite potation systems were investigated by the Fourier transform infrared/internal reflection spectroscopy (FT-IR/IRS) examination of transferred LB monolayers of collector molecules at the surfaces of the mineral crystals. The [ir]-A isotherm study of fatty acid and amine, typical anionic and cationic collectors, showed the different packing trends dependent upon the pH and/or type of subphase. This result clearly reflects the effect of pH on compound formation and dissociation of the collector molecules. Identification of the collector adsorption state and confirmation of the validity of the FT-IR/IRS adsorption density equation were included in this research effort. This allowed for a detailed discussion of collector adsorption phenomena. As a result of these experiments, it is possible to relate the hydrophobic character of a surface to the nature of the adsorbed collector structure and thus describe flotation behavior in greater detail. For example, it appears that in the case of oleate/ fluorite the equivalent of an LB monolayer can form spontaneously during adsorption from solution, and this structure is known as a self-assembled monolayer (SAM). Such a state is significantly more hydrophobic than the oleate structure which forms on the calcite surface at an equivalent adsorption density.

The Australian longwall mining industry spends millions of dollars per year on proactive and reactive ground consolidation applications across most of the operations currently in production. The design and effectiveness of the applications and products vary widely and are based predominantly on-site precedence or what were considered successful applications at other sites in similar situations. In the continual improve the effectiveness of how consolidation products are used and when by enhancing our knowledge of the mechanical properties of products used in underground coal applications and applying this increased understanding to geotechnical design. One of the current challenges to further developing more appropriate and accurate geotechnical design methods for consolidation activities is the lack of standardised materials testing and knowledge of rock mechanics data on in situ performance. The lack of industry standardisadesign of consolidation programs, with a reliance on experience-based guidance for rockmass consolidation design. consolidation products. The program was designed to provide the industry with a set of geomechanical property index tests and a data set that can be utilised by rock mechanics engineers as baseline information for product evaluation and engineering design. The laboratory work undertaken is critical to understanding the exact small-scale mechanical properties of these products and testing was carried out at Monash University for various states of curing of each product. Recognising that the speed at which a mixed product develops its desired properties to act as a support element in underground coal mines is critical to its serviceability. This paper presents the testing rationale proposed, the testing results, and a framework for how the data set can be used to improve the engineering basis for ground consolidation design, in terms of expected rockmass performance under various mining conditions and application parameters.

This paper describes the shaft design and construction for a 72-inch microtunnel under 14 active railroad tracks in Avondale, Louisiana. Initial shaft design for a deeper tunnel alignment considered secant piles with a jet grout plug. Final design for a shallower tunnel alignment included contractor input with support consisting of braced sheet piles with a jet grout plug. The authors further elaborate on jet grout implementation in very soft organic clay soils and the practical limitations of jet grouting. This paper emphasizes how all project participants worked together to utilize value engineering and alternative delivery on a unique tunneling project with a focus on temporary shaft support.

1. TRENDS OF DEVELOPMENT IN THE MECHANICAL DRIVING OF UNDERGROUND EXCAVATIONS IN THE GERMAN COAL MINING INDUSTRY The demand for higher advance in underground excavations led, in the past ten years, to the development and application of various mechanical methods in the coal mining industry of the Federal Republic of Germany. Hence, a modern mine cannot operate anymore without tunneling machines for the driving of horizontal and inclined roads and shaft boring machines for the sinking of shafts. In future, boring operations will assume a high positional value in the mining industry, as the development of cutters has kept pace with the development of machines. In the past ten years, about 40 km of roadways have been bored by tunneling machines in the German coal mining industry, further 140 km will be bored by 1990, part of which are already under contract. The idea was tempting to apply the technology of horizontal tunnel borers also to the sinking of vertical shafts. The underground contractors Deilmann-Haniel GmbH of Dortmund and Thyssen Schachtbau GmbH of Mülheim/Ruhr developed already in 1970, together with Wirth of Erkelenz, a shaft boring machine working without drill pipes, capable of sinking shafts following a pilot borehole, according to the downward reaming method (Fig. 1). In the meantime, two such shaft borers are operating in coal mines with diameters of 4.50 m to 6.50 m. Recently an order was placed for a third Wirth shaft borer for diameters up to 8.50 m. Since 1971 about 3.800 m of open or blind shafts have been sunk by the reaming process (Fig. 2).
