"What would you do if you are an industry leader and disruptive technology threatens to overturn your business model? Although bearings and seals are in little danger of being displaced in the near future, one company is taking no chances in an age of digital disruption.“For SKF, digital transformation and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) make this time right now arguably the most exciting time in our 100-plus years of history,” John Schmidt, president of SKF USA Inc., said during the SKF Technical Press Day in Philadelphia, PA.The company is not merely integrating digital technologies into its products and services but is taking a forward-looking, strategic approach. “To be successful, legacy companies have to undertake a process called digital transformation. It’s not just an IT initiative but is really about upgrading the strategic thinking,” explained Michael D’Argenio, vice president of digital transformation and customer experience at SKF Americas.Learning from those who went beforeD’Argenio cited the examples of two companies that saw entirely different outcomes in the face of digital disruption. The well-known case is that of Kodak, one of the storied brands in history, whose business was disrupted by the advent of digital photography. Although it invented digital photography, Kodak decided to box it up and put it on the shelf because it was scared of disrupting its business in photographic fim. Instead, it was disastrously disrupted from the outside.Less well known is the case of Encyclopedia Brittanica Inc., publisher of the longest-running English-language, general-knowledge encyclopedia in the world. Sales peaked at 120,000 sets in 1990, plunging to 8,000 sets in 2012. In 20 short years, it saw not one but two massive digital disruptions. The first was in 1993, when Microsoft published the first digital interactive encyclopedia on a CD-ROM, called Encarta, priced at just $99. The second was in 2001, when a communitycurated, free website called Wikipedia launched. Taking the opposite approach from Kodak, Encyclopedia Brittanica looked at its industry, its company and its customers through the lens of the new technologies, made a prediction about the future and, based on that prediction, took a bold move. Having identified its core value proposition as the delivery of reliable, high-value, verifiable knowledge, Encyclopedia Brittanica replanned, restructured and rebuilt its company from the ground up to deliver that same value proposition, only in a different way. It stopped producing the only product that it had known for 244 years and began producing digital products that it sold to educational institutions.“There is a lot to learn from the Encyclopedia Brittanica case,” said D’Argenio. “The company embraced its market change, it embraced its customer change, and it rethought what it needed to do to be successful. Because it owned that disruption internally, it was never disrupted from the outside. It continues to operate today and is as profitable as it has ever been.”"

 This research project explored the viability of a new mining technology — thermal fragmentation — in narrow-vein mining. Thermal fragmentation technology uses a flame jet to produce extreme heat that spalls the surrounding rock to a strategically located drill hole, as an alternative to traditional blasting. This paper creates a net present value (NPV) model of a mining method using thermal fragmentation as well as one of an existing method used for narrow-vein mining. Comparisons and evaluations were made regarding the feasibility of the new technology. It was found that while overall costs for thermal fragmentation were relatively high, reductions in wages, haulage and processing costs as well as increased productivity and ore recovery meant that the new method would improve the financial performance of any operation.

"INTRODUCTION Beneficiation of ores and minerals in a concentrator plant requires a significant amount of water [1] for the grinding and particle separation processes; most of it ends up being recirculated for reuse, slurry pumps are used after crushing and grinding feeding the ore to a classifier to separate fine-grained material (less than 5 mm) from coarse-grained material requiring further grinding. The lower ore grades [2] in the past couple of decades have demanded an increase on power size and efficiency of process machines to maintain a competitive plant throughput; Hydro-cyclone feed pumps to control both under and over milling or grinding are not the exception; Fig. 1 shows a conventional drive train [3] comprising an (1) asynchronous motor (also known as squirrel cage induction motor = SCIM), a high speed coupling (2), a gear reducer (3) and a low speed coupling (4) attached to the shaft of the pump (5), to accommodate the motor rated speed (typically 1800 rpm) to the process requirements (in the range of 250 rpm to 350 rpm), requiring additional components related to the gearbox: instrumentation, maintenance, disposable lubricants and filters, spare parts, thus reduces the overall system efficiency ultimately reflected into CAPEX and OPEX.WHY VARIABLE SPEED DRIVES FOR CYCLONE FEED PUMPS Hydrocyclones or commonly referred as “cyclones” are one of the most important devices in the minerals industry [4]; almost universally used in close-circuit grinding because of their high capacity and relative efficiency, the evolution of Power Electronics made affordable the use of Medium Voltage - Variable Frequency Converters (VFC) for Cyclone Feed pumps in combination with induction motors larger than 500hp (373kW) to gain multiple benefits: - Soft start with minimum electrical utility disturbance = inrush current mitigation - Full Torque available at zero speed for overload startup with pulp solidification after long still stand periods, superior to any other reduced voltage starting method. - Optimum and constant pump speed (independent of the electrical network or load condition), compared to across the line SCIM operation - Flexible Motor Voltage and Speed regardless of the power distribution Voltage and Frequency - Improved Power Factor (close to unitary), over the entire operating speed range"

In August, 1977, the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act was signed into law [I]. It stated that: "The Congress finds and declares that because of the diversity in terrain ... and other physical conditions in areas subject to min ing operations, the primary governmental res- ponsibility for developing, authorizing, issuing, and enforcing regulations for-surface mining and reclamation operations subject to the Act should rest with the States." Section 516 of Title V (Control of the Environ mental Impacts of Surface Coal Mining) of the Act deals with the surface effects of underground coal mining operations. "Each permit issued under any approved State or Federal program pursuant to this Act and relating to underground coal mining shall re quire tfieoperator to adopt izeasures consist ent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence, causing material damage, to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and main tain the value and reasonable foreseeable use of such surface lands, except in those instances vhere the mining technology used requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner: Provided, that nothing in this subsection shall be construed to prohibit the standard method of room and pillar mining. "

A program of geological research in support of mineral exploration efforts is outlined. Specific goals are stated, approaches to accomplish their attainment are described, and the type of useful results to be expected are outlined. Because mineral exploration or prospecting has intensely practical goals, research in support of it must be applied research, applied to the problem of maintaining or increasing the discovery rate of the exploration effort. To attain research goals, attention to personnel selection, group structure, and program are critically important, and in about that order. A large percentage of the professional personnel should have had experience in mining geology or mineral exploration, and they all should be prospector-oriented. Structuring in the group should be at a minimum, with wide allowance for the kind of independent research which is essential to the nurturing of on-target creativity. The program should be field-oriented, and it should include a wide representation of those subdisciplines of geology which are applicable to mineral exploration. The types of results to be anticipated include improved or new conceptual models for various types of orebodies and their settings from which new ore guides can be derived, new exploration techniques, and the development of a knowledge bank for various aspects of the exploration effort.

Despite two large projects represented in the keynote docket, the mood of the 2011 SME Arizona Conference was summed up best by Ferol Baker, general manager of New Mexico Copper Corp. (a wholly owned subsidiary of Themac Resources Group), ?In the past, it seemed like you couldn?t go to a conference like this without hearing about one big new greenfield project after another. Now what you see is companies doing internal expansion or small-scale brownfield development.? Overall, the tone of this year?s meeting, held at the J.W. Marriott Resort at Starr Pass in Tucson, AZ, was upbeat, yet practical. From the keynote and luncheon addresses to the six panels of sessions, the projects described were positive about the future, yet focused on the details required to make those projects come to fruition.

Discussion by M.R. Yalamanchili and J.D. Miller The authors, M. S. Celik et al., should be recognized for their efforts to describe the flotation behavior of boron minerals. In the case of borax and other soluble salt minerals, analysis of the flotation chemistry has been difficult because of the high ionic strengths associated with these soluble salt systems. However, considerable progress has been made in this area, and recently a surface charge/collector colloid adsorption model was proposed by Miller and his coworkers to explain the collector adsorption phenomena observed in soluble salt flotation systems (Milleret al, 1992; Yalamanchili et al., 1993; Miller and Yalamanchili, 1994; Yalamanchili and Miller, 1994a: Yalamanchili and Miller, 1994b). In this work, the sign of the surface charge of alkali halides in their saturated brines was established on the basis of nonequilibrium electrophoretic mobility measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis (Miller et al., 1992). Generally, these results are what would be expected from the simplified lattice-ionhydration theory. This electrokinetic information coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in such soluble salt flotation systems indicates that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. Experimental flotation/bubble attachment results for 21 different alkali halides (Yalamanchili et al., 1993; Yalamanchili and Miller, I994b) confirmed that the flotation response of soluble salt minerals with weak electrolyte collectors can best be explained by the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids rather than by the adsorption collector ions and/or neutral molecular dipoles as originally suggested by many researchers (Fuerstenau and Fuerstenau, 1957; Schubert, 1967; Roman et al., 1968). In addition, the flotation of certain alkali oxyanions (Pizarro et al., 1993) and double salts such as schoenite and kainite can be explained by the same collector colloid adsorption mechanism (Miller and Yalamanchili, 1994). The borax flotation results reported by Celik et al. need to be examined in terms of the above mentioned surface charge/ collector colloid adsorption model. Unfortunately, the authors seem to be unaware of this recent work that nicely describes soluble salt flotation with weak electrolyte type collectors such as amines and carboxylates. In view of our past work, the flotation characteristics of borax were of particular interest, and, in this regard, the results of dodecyl amine flotation of borax reported by Celik et al. have been examined in further detail in the light of experimental results from our laboratory. In our research, a vacuum flotation technique was used to study the flotation response of borax (Na2B407.10H20), which has a solubility of 39 g/L at 25 °C) with dodecyl amine hydrochloride as collector. These chemicals were purchased from Eastman Kodak and used as received. Saturated solutions of borax at desired pH values were prepared by continuously stirring the salt solutions over a period of about 10 hrs. It should be mentioned that the conditioning time to achieve equilibrium is an important variable and can significantly change the flotation response of some soluble salts (Yalamanchili et al., 1993). Collector was added to the saturated borax solutions containing about one gram of 100x 150 mesh borax particles, and conditioning was done for about 20 minutes prior to flotation. The borax flotation recoveries from saturated brine are presented in Fig. 1 as a function of collector addition at the natural pH of 9.3, as reported both by Celik et al. and as measured in our laboratory. In addition, the region of precipitation for the dodecyl amine hydroborate is included in Fig. 1. It can be seen in Fig. 1 that the flotation response curves are separated by about one order of magnitude in R12NH3CI collector addition. The flotation results of Celik et al. show that the maximum borax recoveries can be obtained below the solubility limit of the dodecyl amine hydroborate collector. However, in our experiments borax flotation seems to occur only after the precipitation of the dodecyl amine hydroborate collector as might be expected from the collector colloid adsorption model (Yalamanchili et al., 1993) if borax were negatively charged. Further analysis by nonequilibrium and equilibrium electrophoretic mobility measurements for borax indicates that borax is negatively charged at the natural pH of 9.3, as discussed below. The reliability of the nonequilibrium electrophoretic measurements has been demonstrated previously for alkali halides and alkali oxyanions (Miller et al., 1992; Miller and Yalamanchili, 1994). The equilibrium and nonequlibrium electrophoretic measurements for borax were found to be consistent and are presented in Table 1. These results provide clear evidence that borax carries a negative surface charge in its saturated brine (pH 9.3), and the sign of the surface charge of borax reverses and becomes positive if the pH is reduced to 8.6. The role of ZnSO4 in activation of sphalerite (ZnS) and deactivation of lead-activated sphalerite has been investigated. Adsorption of metallic ions at the solid-solution interface, electrokinetic results for sphalerite under different chemical conditions, and thermodynamic calculations were used to elucidate the mechanisms involved. It is shown that flotation response of sphalerite in absence of activators is rather weak and that adsorption of ethyl xanthate on the mineral mainly electrostatic in nature. Zinc sulfate is found to activate the mineral but only in a narrow acidic pH range. This is attributed to the increase of zeta potential as well as the possible increase in amount of negatively charged bulk precipitated zinc xanthate. Lead ions activate sphalerite in a wide pH range and the lead activated mineral assumes a flotation behavior similar to that of galena (PbS). However, addition of ZnSO4 depresses the lead-activated sphalerite by replacing lead ions at the mineral/solution interface.

"The “Reiche Zeche” mine in Freiberg, Germany, a 600-year-old lead-zinc-silver mine with extensive open mine workings, experiences severe ventilation losses due to leakage. Much air leaks into abandoned workings, decreasing the airflow available to active working areas. Usually, this leakage occurs in remote areas that lack transportation infrastructure like roadways or rail, making it difficult to haul construction materials to the sites to erect passive ventilation controls such as stoppings, regulators and seals. Transportation distances make it impractical to hand carry traditional construction materials, such as bricks and concrete. Alternative materials, such as brattice, foaming polymers, concrete canvas, and some innovative ventilation control designs have been investigated for this purpose. The suitability of the materials investigated depends on many factors including the pressure it can withstand, the ease of transportation, and workability. Impacts of mine water must be considered, as the Reiche Zeche is below drainage and experiences significant inflow of water. Researchers must consider the effects water inundation as well as how the stopping construction material reacts to being exposed to acidic mine water. INTRODUCTION Problem Statement Mining in the area around Freiberg, Germany began in the 12th century. The mine is used for research, mining engineering education, tourism and air conditioning for a local hospital. The first records of mining in the Reiche Zeche are from around 1384. Due to the strength and competency of the host rock, many of the oldest workings still stand and remain open today, although they may not be accessible. Reiche Zeche also connects to several other, closed mines in the area that are largely unmapped. This allows air to leak into neighboring mines, reducing the air available to ventilate to the working areas of Reiche Zeche. In order to improve ventilation efficiency, it is necessary to control the ventilation and reduce leakage by constructing seals, stoppings and regulators. A challenge with building traditional seals and stoppings in the Reiche Zeche is that the old workings lack transportation pathways or rails. Also, the lack of compressed air, water or electricity makes it difficult to operate power tools and drills. This means that construction materials must be hand carried – some over distances of several kilometers. Figure 1 shows a typical drift in the Reiche Zeche. Researchers investigated using lighter, more easily transportable materials including concrete canvas, expanding polyurethane and polyurea foams, and brattice. The applicability and utility of these materials depends on a variety of factors including the ventilation air pressure, chemical resistance to acidic and mineral-laden mine waters, ease of transport, and ease of construction. Stoppings and seals must be substantially constructed so that they remain tight and do not require maintenance. It is also important to consider the toxicity of the construction materials in case of a mine fire."

In recent years, considerable advances have taken place worldwide in the design and construction of first tunnel linings. With these advances, there is a tendency to move away from traditional support that includes heavy open profiles of rolled steel arches, to a lighter solution with the use of an optimized tubular steel cross section rib, and shotcrete reinforced with steel mesh and/or steel fibers, providing a continuous support (Lunardi, 1982). The development of tubular ribs has provided greater design options, increasing flexibility to engineers and contractors while providing a efficient and cost effective construction method. In this article, the authors describe numerical and experimental investigation on this problem, suggesting as a new first lining steel arch design approach by using tubular ribs cross section as new technical solution for first lining underground support.

Early history of the district is typical of many, particularly in Southwestern United States. The usual early Spanish influence was felt; Marcos de Niza, Coronado and Father Kino are most notable, but authentic records regarding Spanish mining activities are sparse. About 1769 the Indian village of Tucson became a Spanish settlement. During the next century prospecting attempts were largely interrupted by the Indian, Mexican and Civil Wars. By 1870 Tucson had a population of 3200 and by 1880 the Southern Pacific Railroad extended all the way from Los Angeles. Pyrometasomatic copper ore was first produced with some local direct ore smelting done during the late 1800s. By 1907, a rail line was built from the Twin Buttes mines to Tucson by the Twin Buttes Mining and Smelting Company. World War I was a very active period, with mixed copper, lead, zinc, gold and silver production. This came mainly from underground replacement and contact metamorphic deposits and from practically all portions of the district. Some of these operations continued intermittently until the 1929 depression.

Production tests at Reserve Mining Company's iron ore pelletizing plant established that rubber-lined balling dm produce a green pellet equivalent in quality to those produced in conventional balling drums equipped with reciprocating cutter bars. The flexing action of the rubber liner prevents concentrate buildup in the drums, eliminating the need for a cutter bar. Advantages of the rubber-lined drum includes a reduction in maintenance and operating manpower, reduced bentonite consumption with less drum surging, reduced power consumption, and improved drum on time.

New is a relative term, and, when used with reference to a concept as old as shaft kilns can be applied to a number of designs. In this case the design that is the subject of this paper, is known as the ring or annular shaft kiln as developed by Mr. Karl Beckenbach of West Germany. The first&apos; operating unit was rated 185 tons per day and was installed in 1962. Today, there are approximately 84 units in operation in Western Europe and Japan. Twenty-one additional units are in the process of erection or on order. Developed sizes range from approximately 100 to 330 tons per day. Units of over 500 tons are in the design stage, however, the largest units presently operating are rated 330 tons per day, <the first: of this size having been installed in 1966. "Figure" 1 is an elevation view of the unit. It is a single vertical cylinder to which are attached the required service platforms, combustion chambers, injectors and distribution piping. Auxiliaries such as recuperator, exhaust fan and dust collector are mounted on the appropriate service platform. The charging pan, feed conveyor, etc. are mounted at the kiln top. At the bottom of the kiln is the silo with a vibrator type discharger, and mounted separately is the required blower for injector air and fan for internal cooling.

A drill recorder is a permanent data collecting instrument. In open pit blast hole drilling the application of a drill recorder is that of data collection, drilling control, and drilling education. The various drilling parameters (weight, RPM, penetration, torque, and air) have a drilling correlation which can be demonstrated and documented by a recorder graph. When the correlation is physically put to use during the process of drilling, then the recorder has become a drilling tool and is no longer just a data collecting instrument, per se. By being able to maintain accurate records and drilling control, comprehensive studies of changes both operational and technological can be made. These are based on in-progress facts and not after-the-fact logs. To determine total drilling efficiency, drilling conditions must be documented and controlled. Field operations at American Smelting and Refining Company&apos;s Mission Mine have proved that by increasing drilling control, demonstration of parameter relationships, and drill monitoring, more economic efficiency can be obtained. In comparing results obtained with recorder control and conventional control a decrease of 14 percent to 36 percent of drill footage costs were obtained. The percentage of variance is dependent upon whether drilling is milled-tooth or carbide-insert bit drilling.

Many devices used in mining are not monitored by sensors or do not have their own intelligence. By retrofitting sensors and real-time data processing, machines can be integrated into an existing digital infrastructure. Within the project Mine.io funded by the European Union a Sandvik DE110 exploration drill rig is being digitized using various AI algorithms at research and education Mine “Forschungs- und Lehrbergwerk Reiche Zeche (FLB)” of TU Freiberg. The aim is to increase the productivity of drilling with real-time evaluation of the current rock to be drilled and the current maintenance status of the drill rig. The drill rig is equipped with a speed sensor, pressure sensors in the hydraulics, 3-axis vibration sensor, borehole length measurement and temperature sensor. The sensors are additionally attached to the drilling rig and no structural changes on the drill rig are necessary. All data are processed real-time at a server structure outside of the mine using AI algorithms to analyze which rock (ore or host rock) is being drilled and to perform predictive maintenance. Processed Data are visualized for the operator to optimize the workflow and the productivity.

Truck-shovel dispatch systems based on linear or nonlinear programming algorithms have been in operation since the mid-1980s, with different levels of success depending on the correct arrangement of operational resources and the complexity of the mine. These systems are known for shortcomings related to the logic behind the decision-making of the operational objectives. This makes it necessary to have a human agent (dispatcher) to guide the system when the operational parameters change, creating the possibility of suboptimal decisions due to the human factor. To address this issue, the present work discusses the implementation of a methodology based on artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to assist in the decision-making of the best optimization goals arrangement when operating a fleet management system. The focus of the analysis is on the evaluation of variable goal weights in a nonpreemptive, multigoal optimization model for multiple uncertain scenarios based on regions of optimal feasibility.

The mining industry has used fleet management systems (FMSs) for decades. These systems were developed long ago in large truck-and-shovel mines, where hardware sales were the core business driver for vendors. These traditional models can be overhauled in the era of the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, gamification and low-cost tablet technology. Relatively low-cost tablets are ubiquitous in modern life, and they are packed with communication radios and sensors like Global Positioning System (GPS) and inertial measurement units used widely for games, fitness measures and navigation. These powerful computer devices provide the same, if not more, sensing capability than traditional fleet management hardware, all at a fraction of the cost and without complicated cables or challenging supply lines.

It has been 2-1/2 years since the Congress passed the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (PL95-87) the Office of Surface Mining every deadline specified in the Act. Hopefully the Congress will begin to realize that specifying unrealistic deadlines does not accomplish the end desire of legislation any sooner -- it only adds to the confusion, and actually hinders orderly, efficient progress. OSM has been sued by all categories of involved parties -- environmental activitist organizations, the states, and the coal operators. This situation has resulted for two reasons: (1) insufficient time was allotted by the Congress to properly develop the regulations and program, and (2) OSM?s philosophy that it must dictate every detail of reclamation operations from Washington, even though many of its people are inexperienced with coal mining. These law- suits are now demonstrating their value. OSM is showing signs of "pulling-in-its horns" and, hopefully, will approach the revised regulations in a more realistic fasion.
