Fine coal particles are difficult to separate effectively from liquids or other solids. Ultrasonic energy may be used to enhance the efficiency of the conventional fine-particle separation processes widely used in the coal and mineral industries. Flotation, settling and dewatering tests were conducted using several fine coal samples to study the effects of ultrasonic treatment on these processes. Process variables such as particle size, ultrasonic treatment time and solids concentration were investigated for their impacts on ultrasonic treatment effectiveness. The results obtained from this study showed that ultrasonic treatment is an effective approach for enhancing solid/solid separation in flotation and solid/liquid separation in sedimentation and dewatering of fine coal. SEM microphotographs demonstrate that ultrasonics cleaned particle surfaces, which is, in part, responsible for the observed improvement in fine coal separation processes.

In this first report, we present a preliminary model based on the simple binary sys¬tem of component B occluded in a matrix of compo¬nent A, for the case where fracture planes can pass with equal ease through A or B. By assuming that the volume fraction of B in AB in the overall matrix is small, which is realistic for many prac¬tical systems, the problem is reduced to a one-¬dimensional treatment which is conceptually easy to understand. The model was programmed for Monte Carlo simulation, and an analytical solution also developed based on the assumption of zero or one mineral fragment per particle. Preliminary ex¬perimental confirmation using a synthetic "mineral¬-host matrix" of known amount and size of B in AB is presented.

Hydrostatic trunnion bearings were recently provided on large Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mills driven by wraparound motors assembled on the head to shell flanges. A conventional SAG mill would have a ring gear driven through one or two pinions. The effects of the magnetic air gap forces from this new SAG mill drive arrangement on the performance of the bearing are discussed. A step-by-step systematic analytical de-sign of the hydrostatic trunnion bearing is presented, followed by a discussion of grinding mill erection requirements to conform with the design. A brief comparison with other bearing types and their response to the effects of magnetic air gap forces are also presented.

Excessive levels of horizontal stresses cause ground fall hazards in underground mines in the Appalachian Basin. At an underground stone mine in Pennsylvania, a modified stress control mine layout is reducing the hazardous conditions associated with excessive horizontal stresses. A microseismic monitoring system is in place to measure levels of rock stability and provide information on the effectiveness of the design technique. The microseismic data is supplemented with frequent and extensive mapping of roof falls and roof rock damage. Findings to date show that the stress control layout provides more stable conditions and thus a safer environment for the mine workers.

INTRODUCTION This method is a variation of cut-and-fill mining where either the wall rock or the vein is too unconsolidated to permit safe mining by conventional cut-and-fill methods. Basic development consists of driving a 2.4 x 2.7-m (8 x 9-ft) haulage heading laterally in the footwall side of the vein. Crosscuts are driven over to the vein at 91-m (300-ft) intervals. Then the vein, at each inter¬section, is mined out to a distance of about 9 m (30 ft ) above the track level. After the installation of an ore chute, scrams or intermediate drifts are driven in both directions along the vein. Mining then starts imme¬diately below the level bounding the upper limit of the stope. A cut varying between 3 and 4.2 m (10 and 14 ft) in depth and mined for a distance of 45.7 m (150 ft )along the strike is taken from the orepass in each direction (Fig. 1). In this mined-out void, the floor of the cut is equipped with 203 x 203-mm (8 x 8-in.) caps hitched into the wall with steel saddle hitches installed on 1.5-m (5-ft) centers. Double wood stringers, 152.4 x 152.4 mm (6 x 6 in.), are then installed on 1.2-m (4-ft) centers longitudinally down the length of the stope. Reinforc¬ing wire mesh is also placed, overlying each mat of timber. Directly above the stringers, stulls are installed from hanging wall to footwall to hold the timber in place during the sand-filling operation. Then a cement¬sand mixture in a ratio of about 1:10 weight is poured to a depth of about 2.4 m (8 ft). The entire cycle is then repeated down to the scram drift. Another variation of timbering is illustrated in Fig. 2. There is a vein width of approximately 5.5 m (18 ft) with the same unconsolidated ground conditions. The primary difference between handling this situation and the previously described undercut-and-fill method is that standard timbered sets are installed in each excavated stoping void rather than stulls. Once again the basic method is to work down the ore block from an upper timbered drift to a lower timbered drift. Cuts are taken from a timbered raise with a chute on the stope side. Each piece of ground excavated is essentially two sets high, 5.5 m (18 ft), by two sets wide, 5.5 m (18 ft), by the length of the cut along the strike of the vein. The timbered sets are 2.4 x 2.4 x 2.4 m (8 x 8 x 8 ft). The net result is, therefore, two sets of timber on a top floor separated by doubled-up 76-mm (3-in.) lagging from

It is the hope of the author that this paper, largely a compilation of observations and opinions built up over 20 years of experience in cold and remote areas may be of some help to others in designing better plants for the future in the north. The north is not as difficult to operate in as the better story tellers make it appear to be. ()n the other hand for 6 months of the year the cold is always there, and it seems to be waiting for someone to make a mistake. The simplest things can shut a multi-million dollar plant down at -4n' F with a 4n M.P.H, wind. It only takes one man door improperly latched to freeze up all the pumps on the bottom floor. Someone can poke a one inch hole in an outside wall in July and six months later while you are having Christmas dinner, a watchman will call up to report that the whole plant is flooded because the main water line just froze up and burst. Basic things to remember in plant design for cold and remote areas are: everything in these areas is more expensive due to long and difficult supply lines. Fuel is expensive and would be a major cost item even if it were not expensive, due to the extended periods of low temperatures. Building volumes should therefore he kept to an acceptable minimum. Service areas on the other hand must he adequate, because maintenance generally has to be conducted inside in a heated area. Supply vehicles for instance have to get completely inside the building to unload. If you try to unload a supply vehicle with the door open at -50° F, you won't be able to find the vehicle for fog and if you take more than 5 minutes half the water lines in the plant will freeze up. People in a remote area are expensive. The capital investment per employee may be as high as $30,000; with fringe benefits per annum costs of an employee will he as high as 812,000 per year regardless of basic wage rate. It

Oxidized coals are difficult to float. Therefore, in this paper, a special flotation procedure was investigated for upgrading this type of coal. The procedure is called direct contact flotation. It relies on mixing dry coal either with pure (anhydrous) flotation reagent(s) or microemulsion. By applying the new direct contact flotation procedure, a coal yield reaching > 95% using anhydrous flotation reagents was achieved, but with relatively high consumption of reagents (up to 30 g/kg). This high reagent consumption may be attributed to the fines included in the flotation feed (100% less than 0.5 mm, with 40% less than 75 µm). On the other hand, the clean coal yield was found to be approximately 88% when mixing dry oxidized coal with microemulsion droplets from dodecane and dodecyl tetra (ethylene glycol) ether (C12E4) in water at a total reagent dosage of 10 g/kg. The direct contact of coal either with unhydrous reagents or microemulsion also provided a high flotation selectivity.

INTRODUCTION This presentation is concerned with the administrative and technical capability of the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) to assure compliance with the individual exposure limit for radon daughters (currently 4 WLM per year). It is not concerned with the epidemiological bases for setting the exposure limit. Moreover, the intent is to show how sophisticated methodologies and advanced technologies, applied to radon daughter concentration measurements in uranium mines, convey the spirit of compliance by providing better estimates than do the historical methods. These better estimates mean that more accurate and more precise estimates of each worker's exposure are determined using these more modern methods and devices. The estimates so derived should provide more convincing evidence to an individual worker that his assigned exposure is a valid indicator of his true exposure. In addition, a perspective on the exposure estimate in relation to the exposure limit is given as further evidence that an exposure limit is not the dividing line between "safe" and "unsafe" exposures. A brief description is given of the compliance aspects of the Atomic Energy Control Regulations and of the limitations of purely statistical non-compliance procedures. Most of the emphasis of the paper will be placed on the uncertainties associated with conventional radon daughter exposure determination and the means being employed (and anticipated) to reduce these uncertainties. NON-COMPLIANCE Under current Atomic Energy Control Regulations (1978), the annual individual exposure limit for radon daughters is given without reference to the possible methods of sampling and calculation of radon daughter exposure and without any reference to possible uncertainties or their magnitudes. This is common in such statutes, the details of sampling, calculation, error analysis, and so on, being left for licence conditions or provided as a specific guideline to the licensee on the matter of compliance with the Regulation. Since the exposure limit is contained in the Regulations, compliance with it is absolute, as with any other law. In Canada, a state of non-compliance with the radon daughter exposure limit exists when an exposure (attributed to an employee) is reported by the licensee to exceed the limit. No uncertainty in the measurements or in the overall determination of exposure is reported nor is any requested. Removal of the worker and the loss of his services are the immediate and direct penalty suffered by the licensee for failure to maintain the exposure at, or below, the limit. A worker may be re-instated to employment for the balance of the reporting period only if the licensee can assure the AECB that further significant exposure to the worker will not ensue. In other jurisdictions, such as the United States, non-compliance is defined on a statistical basis. For example, NIOSH, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health presents procedures for calculating the 95% Lower Confidence Limit (LCL) in order to "compare the results of occupational environmental sampling to an occupational health standard and make a decision with a known chance of making an incorrect decision that a state of non-compliance exists" (Leidel and Busch, 1975). (In the nomenclature of this presentation, exposure limit would be used in place of "standard", in the NIOSH sense). Furthermore, it is emphasized in the NIOSH document that such numerical comparisons "are necessary only if the sample mean is greater than the standard". The NIOSH document points out, quite correctly, that the "statistical procedures presented below will not detect and do not allow for analysis of highly inaccurate results, i.e., systematic (non-random) errors or mistakes ... If a systematic error is known to exist in an instrument or analytical procedure then correct the sample mean of the data before analyzing for non-compliance". It is certainly not the purpose of this paper to criticize the sophisticated statistical approach to non-compliance as given in the NIOSH document or in similar approaches used in other jurisdictions. Rather, the purpose is to approach, with some introspection, the question of the determination of exposure by the employer for his employee and especially the employee's understanding of, and confidence in, the accuracy of the exposure determination and its relation to the exposure limit. North America had an Important role in the early development of sampling theories. Unfortunately many progressive ideas were soon frozen into a series of guidelines based on the philosophy that "honest sampling only requires good judgment and practical experience". Such a philosophy appeared to be good enough In the early age of the mining Industry; however, it became quickly necessary to find new approaches. During the last thirty years, Pierre Gy's sampling theory provided tremendous breakthrough in the comprehension of this new science, nevertheless went unnoticed in North America. Sampling always generates complex problems and as the philosopher and mathematician Descartes suggested: "A complex problem can often be dissociated Into a series of several simpler problems, only then you try to solve those one by one". The only way to solve sampling problems is to consider each component of the overall sampling error: components of a continuous model such as long-range quality fluctuations, periodic quality fluctuations, weighting fluctuations; components of a discrete model such as materialization errors, delimitations errors, extraction errors, fundamental errors, grouping errors, and segregation errors. PAST AND CURRENT PRACTICES Many sampling methodologies have been developed, improved, and standardized during the first half of this century. Accordingly, sampling equipment has been proposed, selected, and used by standards committees. Today, there is a tremendous variety of sampling methodologies and corresponding tools offered to anyone with limited experience in sampling and it is very easy for a chemist, metallurgist, geologist or miner to spend considerable money in equipment transgressing the most basic rules of sampling correctness. Sampling stations that never worked properly in modern plants often cause engineers to abandon them and return to a primitive form of grab sampling.

Cessation of open pit mining in 1996 at the McLaughlin hot-spring type gold deposit has resulted in the development of two pit lakes that will be managed as permanent lakes with a total storage capacity of 10,000 acre-feet. The south pit lake developed from alkaline ground water infiltration and had an initial pH of 7.2. It contained high concentrations of boron and chloride, indicating that it consisted of a mix of meteoric and evolved connate waters. Numerous carbon dioxide gas vents were present initially in the shallow south pit lake, but as the pit lake increased in depth, gas venting ceased and carbon dioxide is retained in the lower layer of the chemically stratified lake. Continued increase of dissolved carbon dioxide in the lower layer increases the potential for a limnic eruption. A chemocliie occurs at a depth of 47 m. The upper layer of the lake has lower pH, temperature, and conductivity than the lower layer. Effluent from ore and waste rock piles directed into the south pit lake has contributed to high levels of antimony, arsenic, cobalt, copper, mercury, nickel, and zinc. Iron oxyhydroxide is abundant in mine effluent that enters the pit lake and adsorption onto this phase has lowered the arsenic and antimony concentrations. The north pit lake formed primarily from winter surface runoff. The acidic water, pH 4.56, initially had high concentrations of cobalt, mercury, and nickel derived from weathering products of pyritized serpentinite and shales. Buffering by wall rocks has established a slightly alkaline pH of 7.62. The concentrations of trace metals in the north pit lake have substantially decreased due to continued dilution of the lake by surface runoff and remediation of parts of the pit walls that have been covered by backfill.

Metallurgical coal is an essential component for the blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) steelmaking process, which accounts for roughly 70% of total global steel production. To meet the growing demand for metallurgical coal, Arch Resources identified the potential to recover low- ash coal from ultra-fines discarded prior to the deslime flotation circuit across their portfolio of operations. Historically, many flotation circuits were designed to discard this ultra-fine coal due to high clay content and technological barriers to cost-effectively upgrade and dewater the coal to a saleable product. Recent advancements in high-intensity flotation technology, including the Eriez StackCell, have enabled coal producers to recover ultra-fine coal while minimizing capital and operating costs. In July 2023, Arch Resources commissioned the first full-scale ultra-fines recovery circuit utilizing StackCell high-intensity flotation technology at the Leer Mining Complex. This paper reviews the approach utilized to develop the flotation process design, learnings from the commissioning and ramp-up period, and performance data through the first year of operation.

For gold recovery, a Chinese refractory, high-sulfur gold concentrate was subjected to biooxidation with high pulp density in a single stirred-tank reactor. The flotation concentrate contained 36.9 percent sulfur (S) and 33.9 percent iron (Fe). Different experimental regimes for biooxidation were applied. With a mixed culture and by controlling the amount of addition of the gold ores and the pH of the biooxidation system, maximum iron oxidation of 82.6 percent and sulfur oxidation of 79.3 percent were achieved. The experimental results indicate that the pH control was beneficial to the biooxidation of this concentrate. Approximately 28.4 percent of elemental sulfur (S8) was found in the oxidizing slags. Two dissolution mechanisms of elemental sulfur are proposed: (1) FeS2 → S80 → S2O32− → SO42− and (2) FeS2 → S80 → SO42−. The high pH had a positive effect on the reduction of the S8. The results of thermodynamic analysis indicate that as an oxidant the dissolved oxygen can effectively reduce the Gibbs free energy of the pyrite oxidation process and, compared with the reaction of ferric iron as the single oxidant, the oxidation of pyrite is easier. The efficiency of the gold recovery was related to the iron oxidation as well as the sulfur oxidation. Gold and silver recoveries of 92.4 percent and 66.4 percent, respectively, were achieved.

As you know, NIOSH is the part of the United States Public Health Service with responsibility for conducting and supporting research leading to prevention and control of occupational diseases and injuries. Some years ago, NIOSH went through a process of identifying and leading occupational health and safety problems in the United States. Candidate problems were evaluated in terms of the number of people affected, the importance of the effects, and how amenable the conditions are to preventive interventions. Lung diseases were ranked first on the resulting list. Diseases from mining continue to contribute substantially to this unfortunate position of prominence. The work of the Generic Center is one of many answers to this critical problem. Although the research is often expressed in terms of dust characterization or dust control, the reality is that high dust levels are much like high blood pressure. No one cares about hypertension per se. We are concerned about the consequences of exposure to untreated high blood pressure--heart disease, kidney disease, and stroke. Similarly, if dusts were truly only a nuisance, there would be little justification for the diverse research program supported by the Bureau of Mines or by NIOSH. But mineral dusts do cause a range of significant health problems: pneumoconiosis, bronchitis, and emphysema. The research supported by the Center is aimed at doing something about them. Within a public health approach to occupational health, we have a hierarchy of interventions. Primary prevention of problems is prevention at the source: solving a problem before it affects a worker. What we call secondary prevention is an attempt to identify health problems at a sufficiently early stage that some intervention will interrupt the disease process or the development of significant impairment. Tertiary prevention refers to rehabilitation of the worker who has already suffered significant loss of function. At NIOSH, and in the Generic Center research programs, the focus is on primary prevention. Basic investigations into those things about specific dusts that promote or reduce toxicity is critical for our understanding of how to prevent disease. Also, the search for engineering solutions to reduce or control dust generation is essential to solving problems of dust over-exposure. But until the engineers create the foolproof safe environment, it will also be necessary to discover better ways to identify the earliest markers of disease. To do this, we must explore and explicate the basic mechanisms of disease through laboratory investigations as well as human observation and physiologic testing. The unique opportunity provided by the Generic Center program and highlighted in this diverse program over the next few days is that these efforts are being carried out in multiple disciplines concurrently. Also, there are periodic small and large gatherings such as this one where investigators have the chance to get together, formally present papers, and informally stimulate each other's progress towards disease prevention. To ignore the potential for this cross-cutting interaction would be a significant loss. To take full advantage of it is potentially revolutionary. I recently pulled out a book I hadn't read since I was an undergraduate. It specifically concerns the nature of intellectual ferment surrounding the development of the concept of a sun-centered rather than an earth-centered universe in the sixteenth century. The book is about more than developments in astronomy: it is a discussion of the nature of scientific revolutions. Scientific revolutions result from the brilliance, insight, and good fortune of the few superimposed on the evolutionary work of the many. They both cause and reflect significant itellectural and social ferment. For example, the revolutionary work of Copernicus in recognizing the limitations of the concept of an earth-centered universe reflected contemporaneous developments in optics, mathematics, physics, economics, and philosophy.

Today's mining industry faces many challenges. Perhaps none is more important than the challenge of improving our industry's public image. Opinion polls document public concern for a clean and safe environment. As part of that public, the mining industry must share that goal. The public is now the most powerful environmental group in society. And the public wants the environment to be protected. In May 1989, Edgar S. Woolard, chairman of DuPont, spoke to the American Chamber of Commerce. He said that industry's continued existence "requires that we excel in environmental performance and that we enjoy the non-objection - indeed even the support of the people and governments in the societies where we operate." In effect, Woolard called for "corporate environmentalism." He defined it as an "attitude and a performance commitment that places environmental stewardship fully in line with public desires and expectations." Environmentalism is no longer a fringe activity, but rather is now clearly in the mainstream. How can we meet public expectations and improve our image as an industry? One of the best ways is to plan, design and operate our mine facilities with environmental responsibility and social concern. The Mineral Hill Mine provides a good case study of a facility that has made this commitment. The project used an inter-disciplinary, multiagency task force, citizen advisory groups and engineering and design considerations. As a result, Mineral Hill achieved cost-effective permitting. At the same time, the operation demonstrated effective "corporate environmentalism."

Separation of dolomite from apatite, because of nonselective adsorption, cannot be achieved by conventional froth flotation technique. Results obtained in the present study also indicate, that this can be attributed to the depletion of the collector molecules due to complexation with the calcium and magnesium ions, dissolved from the two minerals. However, it has been established in this investigation that conditioning the material at pH 10, followed by reconditioning, without any additional collector, at pH 4, results in selective flotation of dolomite from the mixture. The recovery of apatite, in the proposed reconditioning process, is much higher than with the conventional conditioning under similar pH conditions. The mechanisms involved in the conventional conditioning, and the reconditioning process are presented.

A $20M pressure oxidation facility is under construction at the Nerco Con Mine, Yellowknife. Plant commissioning will start in the third quarter of 1992. Roasting of arsenical auriferous concentrates prior to 1970 left 45,000 tons each of highly toxic gold-bearing arsenic trioxide sludge and roaster calcine at the minesite. Safe disposal of these wastes has been a high priority. In 1983 an arsenic trioxide plant was built by the former owner to re-treat the sludge and to sell the product. Due to a poor market and high operating losses, the plant was closed by Nerco in 1989. Mine production in the future will revert increasingly to refractory ore as a replacement for free-milling ore which has been the mill feed since the roaster was shut down. With this fact in mind, Nerco management saw the potential of a proven process to recover the gold from a combined feedstock of refractory flotation concentrate, sludge, and calcine waste. A further requirement was the stabilization of all the arsenic as an insoluble ferric arsenate. By the end of 1989, after the completion of a literature search and a study of process economics, pressure oxidation was selected. Extensive bench and pilot plant work was completed in 1990 and early 1991 to develop the process parameters and to complete environmental testing of the autoclave products. Management approval for construction of a pressure oxidation facility was made in December 1990. Plant capacity is 96 tpd requiring a 40 tpd VSA oxygen plant on site. Detailed engineering began in March 1991. The pressure oxidation building was completed by the end of 1991. The autoclave arrived on site and was mounted on its foundation in December 1991.

"In August 2013, the Appraisal Practices Board of the U.S. Appraisal Foundation issued its “APB Valuation Advisory #4 - Identifying Comparable Properties,” which contains analysis and examples that may suggest a broader meaning of the term “comparable properties” than is current convention in real property value appraisal in the United States and internationally. The advisory is directed at the appraisal of real property of all kinds, including interests in mineral properties, as indicated by the inclusion of two mineral property appraisal papers in the appendix that lists suggestions for further reading.This paper firstly reviews as background the historical meaning of a comparable property, with its perceived constraints, against real-world examples of transacted mineral properties that are adjusted to subject properties to provide market value indications. The advisory’s findings are then examined and evaluated as to whether they may influence and benefit the work of mineral property appraisers, particularly in situations where their sales comparison analyses may be challenged. The conclusion is that the combination of constraints that the advisory’s findings specify for use of the term “comparable” will for mineral properties be met infrequently or rarely. As a result, mineral property appraisers are advised to avoid using the terms comparable or “comp” when referring to transactions of mineral properties that they analyze to derive data for appraising the value of their subject mineral properties. IntroductionA mineral property appraiser rarely finds a sale of a mineral property that meets the literal meaning of the term “comparable sale,” by being directly comparable to the subject property of the appraisal in all factors of significance in the determination of the value of the property interest being appraised. Real estate appraisers have long used a more liberal interpretation of the meaning of comparable sale and its commonly used abbreviation, “comp.” Real estate appraisers compare sales to their subject property on the basis of price per hectare or acre of land and price per square meter or square foot of building floor area. Two 6.17 m (20 ft 3 in.) diameter raises, concrete-lined to 5.49 m (18 ft) inside diameter, were completed in 1978 at the Monterey Coal Company Number One Mine near Carlinville, Illinois, by Frontier-Kemper Constructors. These two raises are the largest in cross-section yet completed by full-face upreaming, and the success of this project is expected to increase the application of raise-boring to coal mine shaft construction. WHY 6.17 M (20 FT) DIAMETER ? Raise boring is well accepted in the metal mining industry for a variety of applications, and is gaining in acceptance in the civil works construction industry. The use of raise boring to construct vertical openings for coal mines has not been as widely accepted, even though coal mining requires, per mine, the greatest number of openings to the surface of any underground activity. Several factors have influenced the low utilization of raise boring in coal mining: 1. Coal mine shafts must often be of large diameter to pass the required high volumes of ventilation air at acceptably low water gage pressures. Cross-sectional areas of finished shafts exceeding 23.23 sq m (250 sq ft) are common. 2. The life of ventilation shafts is comparatively long, and the typical sedimentary strata overlying coal seams normally require that the shafts be lined. Shafts on the intake ventilation circuit must have permanent water-tight linings. 3. Unconsolidated overburden at the surface is often thick, and as reaming cannot be safely utilized in unconsolidated material,
