An information system (I/S) plan is a means for establishing and communicating the direction the organization intends to take to provide the information required for achievement of organizational goals and objectives. The rapid advancements in information technology, the increasing complexity of systems, and the growing dependence of mining companies on these information systems have emphasized the need for more comprehensive I/S planning. This subsection explores this need, the role I/S planning can play within a mining company, and finally describes a methodology for development of an I/S plan.

Introduction This text is intended to provide the operator and turnkey contractor with the basic data for sizing vibrating screens to be used in ore crushing plants. The basic capacities, modifying factors, etc.. used in the area requirement calculations were developed empirically and modified to their present values based upon years of practical applications. It must be pointed out that screening is much more of an art than an exact science; however. the information presented here should provide for reasonably accurate screen sizing when applied to many metallic ores. Types of Screens There are two types of screens which can be used for strictly sizing applications. These are two- and four-bearing screens; both are inclined circle-throw machines. "When designing segmental lining at a cross passage, modern solutions try to bear the loads transferred around the opening within the rings by using shear elements in the ring joints. Commonly used shear systems providing coupling are cam & pocket, shear keys, bicones and steel dowels. These solutions have advantages and disadvantages, but most importantly they have limits in their capacity to stabilize the lining at cross passages. With the help of 3D-FE-analyses for an opening of one segmental ring these different solutions are compared taking various ground conditions into account. As a result the capacity of the individual system is determined. Notice is made regarding the applicability of the system as well as the consequences for the design and the verification. INTRODUCTION The design of the lining at a cross passage is among the most difficult tasks when designing TBM-tunnels. At one time the bedding of the lining disappears due to the excavation behind the lining, at another the ring-structure is interrupted when parts of the lining are removed for the opening. The trick is to transfer the loads around the opening into other segments and to areas of the lining which are still supported by the ground. In the rings immediately at the cross passage this creates a distribution of forces within the segments that strongly deviates from that of the regular lining. The design needs to consider the boundary conditions of the respectively chosen solution for stiffening of the opening and its peculiarities in the modeling as well as in the verifications. In the past segments of steel or an internal strutting of steel (DAUB 2013) placed around the later openings were commonly used, see Figure 1. The application of a strutting from the outside to the rings is restricted to such circumstances when for example a connection from a shaft to the tunnel can be made in suitable ground conditions (Ring and Glomp 2012). Though steel segments provide a robust solution, they are expensive due to their laborious manufacture, the high proportion of construction steel required and the time consuming installation in the tunnel (Häfliger 2013). A strutting of steel requires extensive design and verification. The resulting structure usually weighs several tons and must be erected as well as demounted within the confined space of the tunnel, requiring suitable transport and assembly equipment. The cross section remains restricted, thus causing a bottleneck for TBM operations and hindering the works and installations for the cross passage works."

The dissociation (ionisation) constant of hydrogen cyanide, pKa(HCN), has been measured by high precision glass electrode potentiometric titrations in saline solutions containing up to 5 mol/L sodium chloride. The dissociation constant of water that is necessary for the calculation of pKa(HCN) has also been measured. In saline solution, and in contrast to literature values, pKa(HCN) changes considerably at both high and low ionic strengths as a result of changes in activity coefficients. In addition an equation is presented, using literature data, that describes the variation of pKa(HCN) with temperature up to 150°C. The significance of the changes in pKa(HCN) for optimising the pH of alkaline cyanide gold recovery streams is briefly discussed.

"INTRODUCTION The paste plant is located at the Barrick Goldstrike mine in Northern Nevada on the Carlin Trend. The Goldstrike property consists of an open pit and an underground mine; along with two processing facilities: a roaster and an autoclave. The underground portion of the mine produces approximately 1,800,000 ore tons per year and approximately 400,000 ounces. The mine is broken up into four distinct zones: Banshee, Meikle, Rodeo and Northpost. The current paste plant services both the Rodeo and Northpost zones. Development of the conceptual designs and permit approval for this plant was an extensive process that took over a decade to complete. A testing program was developed in conjunction with this process and implemented throughout to ensure the following metrics were achieved: ensure no environmental impact, material available onsite would be able to flow through the pipe to all required locations, and that this material could achieve the appropriate final strength. PLANT AND UNDERGROUND CONSTRUCTION This is the first paste plant to be built in Nevada. The paste plant at Goldstrike began construction in January 2012 and was completed in March of 2013. This plant was constructed to service the Rodeo side of the underground mine which previously utilized a cemented rock fill (CFR) plant to meet their backfill needs. However, in March of 2013, the same month the plant was commissioned, the raise that fed this CRF plant was mined out in a planned phase of the adjacent open pit. This made the switch to paste all the more difficult as it was being relied on for as the sole source of backfill production even though the system yet to be fully tested and optimized. The plant was designed to be fed with onsite Roaster tailing which would be thickened and then mixed with cement and fly ash. The plant was designed to pump 177 tons of paste per hour with a utilization of 65%. The original design specifications for the paste were 77% solids with varying binder contents depending on where the paste was being placed"

Kidston Gold Mines is a 14 000 tonnes per day rated operation located 280 kilometers west of Townsville in Queensland. The principle shareholder is Placer Development Limited. Kidston's orebody consists of 44.2 million tonnes graded at 1.79 g/t gold and 2.22 g/t silver. Production commenced in January, 1985, and despite a number of control, mechanical and electrical problems, each month has seen a steady improvement in plant performance to a current level of over ninety percent rated capacity.

Proponents of geomorphic mine land reclamation have criticized current reclamation practices in the coal fields of steep-sloped Central Appalachia as too narrowly focused on civil engineering principles and neglectful of the functional and aesthetic benefits of reclaiming mine sites in ways that mimic natural landforms and drainage patterns. They observe that current mining and reclamation practices are radically transforming the mountain-and-valley terrain into gigantic flat plateaus and, in doing so, disrupting the beauty and ecology of the natural landscape. Instead of designing and constructing linear or planar surfaces and unvarying slope gradients during the reclamation process, they recommend ?landforming,? i.e. the adoption of curvilinear, compound slope forms that blend well with the surrounding physiography and represent the result of naturally stabilizing geomomorphic processes. The authors feel that the concept of geomorphic mine land reclamation is sound, however, its application to the Central Appalachian coal fields faces significant--albeit not insurmountable--challenges. They include: (1) existing reclamation enforcement regulations that are focused on civil engineering principles and not explicitly supportive of geomorphic methodologies; (2) regulatory agencies? current intent to limit the down-gradient reach of excess spoil fills in order to allay disruption or burial of natural streams; (3) actual or perceived increases in reclamation costs; and (4) the challenge of designing and constructing ?natural? landforms that are mature and stable in an otherwise youthful, erosional landscape.

Large-scale equipment can reduce both capital and operating costs for concentrators. Large semiautogemus (SAG) mills can be effectively utilized in big mills but they must be kept fully loaded to tab advantage of their great potential. With varying hardness ores, controlling throughput is difficult and careful design must take this into consideration. A variable speed drive on large primary semiautogemus mills can overcome this problem to a considerable degree. This paper provides a base case using standard accepted technology of two wound rotor single speed 4476 kW (6000 hp) motors to drive the primary SAG mills of a hypothetical 36,364 t/d (40,000 stpd) typical porphyry copper mill. One other fixed speed drive will be described and jive variable speed drive configurations will be reviewed. Capital costs for the entire grinding circuit, from crusher product to flotation feed, were developed for the base case and each of the alternatives. A technical evaluation comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each drive is presented.

This paper is an extension of previous work evaluating a new extractant, LIX®-64, for recovery of copper from dilute acidic solutions. Large scale pilot plant operations have confirmed the technical and economic feasibility of the process and, with minor exceptions, scale up parameters obtained by previous laboratory work. Operating problems encountered in the pilot plants are discussed. Design parameters for-scale-up to commercial plants are presented and discussed along with a revised capital cost estimate. The future pilot program is discussed, including minor design changes and the effect of entrained organic on dump leaching efficiency.

A metallurgical/flux is a substance that is added to combine with gangue (unwanted minerals) during ore smelting, with impurities in a molten metal, or with other additives in metal refining processes to form a slag that can be separated from the metal. Because slags are immiscible with the metallic melt and are of lower density, a separation of the slag and metal occurs if the viscosity and surface tension are of the proper values. The chemistries of slags are adjusted to provide the proper melting point, viscosity, surface tension, conductivity, specific heat, density, or chemical properties to effect the desired task. In addition to absorbing impurities from the metal, the purposes of the slag are to thermally insulate the metal bath, protect the molten metal from the atmosphere, and control the chemical potential of the system. Several excellent references on slags and metallurgical fluxes are available (Boynton, 1980, Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985, Turkdogan, 1983, Rosenqvist, 1974, Fine and Gaskell, 1984). The function of the slag might vary at different stages within a process prior to final melting. For example, the slag composition and behavior will change as materials descend in the iron blast furnace, or as they melt in the early stages of formation of steel- making slags. Selection of the chemistry for a slag might be influenced by factors outside the primary function as when blast furnace slags are used to make cement, rock wool insulation, or fertilizer supplements. Sometimes slags contain a sufficient amount of valuable recoverable elements to be sold as raw materials for other processes. Fluxes are often referred to as acid, basic, or neutral. Acid fluxes are those that generally form acids in water and bases are those that would generally form bases in water. Typical acid fluxes are silica, alumina, and phosphorus, although alumina can function as either an acid or base. Typical basic fluxes are lime and magnesia. Fluorspar, or calcium fluoride, is a neutral substance because it can be viewed as the reaction product of a base and an acid. The degree of acidity (ratio of acids to bases) or basicity (ratio of bases to acids) is often specified to characterize the slag chemistry for a particular system. The system might also be referred to as acid or basic depending on the choice of slag, for example, basic steelmaking uses slags with more bases (lime and magnesia) than acids (silica and alumina). Many forms of minerals and compounds have been used as fluxes depending on the process requirements, availability, costs, requirements for recycling of intermediate products, and environmental concerns. Because slags are most often mixtures of oxides and silicates, fluxes are usually oxides, carbonates (which decompose to oxides) and silicates. Slags comprising phosphates, borates, sulfides, carbides, or halides have also been used (Rosenqvist, 1974, Moore, 1981, Szekely et al., 1989). In ironmaking and steelmaking, some acidic components are sometimes added. In nonferrous processes slags and fluxes are acidic with silica as the primary component, and although the use of basic flux such as limestone or lime is not extensive, some amount is used to modify slag properties and some refining slags are lime based. The production of iron is accomplished by smelting of ores, pellets, and sinter in blast furnaces with subsequent refining of molten iron and scrap in oxygen-blown processes. The electric furnace is used to make steel, stainless steels, ferroalloys, and special alloys, whereas ferromanganese is often made in blast furnaces. Fluxes are used in all of these processes, and either limestone or lime is the major flux component with some dolomite, dolomitic lime, silica, alumina, and fluorspar being used. In ironmaking, the flux is added either by direct charging or through sinter and fluxed pellets. In steel refining by the basic oxygen process, flux is added as lime and dolomitic lime that are either charged as lumps or injected as fines. Some small amount of limestone is sometimes used. Fluorspar is often added as lumps or mixed with other fine materials in briquettes. Alumina is sometimes added to blast furnaces either by direct charging of sized lumps or through sinter. Typical acid fluxes are sand, gravel, quartz rock, used silica brick, or raw siliceous ore (Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985). Olivine, which is a magnesium-silicate mineral, has been added to iron blast furnaces to enhance removal of alkalis (Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985). Alumina in the form of bauxite, aluminiferous clay, and recycled alumina brick has been used as flux. Alumina can function amphoterically as either an acid or base, for example it can form aluminum silicate in high silica slags or calcium aluminate in lime-bearing slags (Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985). Limestone (calcium carbonate) and dolomite (magnesium-calcium carbonate), or fluxstones as they are sometimes called (Boynton, 1980), and their calcined forms, lime and dolomitic lime are the major basic fluxes. In the latter cases, the carbonates are de- composed in a kiln-type process to drive off carbon dioxide that might otherwise interfere with the subsequent smelting or refining process or require expensive forms of energy to effect the decomposition (e.g., by combustion of coke in the iron blast furnace). Limestone is considerably less expensive than lime because it is not calcined; however, lime is far more difficult to handle and reacts readily with water. Dolomite and dolomitic lime are used for their magnesia content. Fluorspar is a neutral flux often used as an additive in steel- making slags to improve fluidity, but it has also been used in combination with lime as a primary slag in electroslag refining (Duckworth and Hoyle, 1969). Based on the mechanical essence that large-scale plastic failure zone appears in all or part of surrounding rock in soft rock roadway, the numerical simulation method is used to study the rectangular roadway in layered rock strata. It is clarified necessary conditions must be met for soft rock: firstly, the strength condition is that the maximum confining pressure is greater than the uniaxial compressive strength of rock strata. Secondly, the stress environment condition is that the ratio of maximum confining pressure to minimum confining pressure is greater than 3. Thirdly, the angle condition is that The direction of principal stress action enables the plastic zone of weak rock layers to fully develop. At the same time, the quantitative description method of soft rock is given, and the soft rock roadway is redefined. Soft rock roadway refers to the roadway that meets the strength conditions, stress environment conditions, and rock structure angle conditions under certain surrounding rock conditions and in-situ stress environment conditions. After the excavation of the roadway, a large-scale plastic failure can be formed, that is, a butterfly-shaped plastic zone is formed, and the conventional support cannot be adapted. It is difficult to support in engineering. It provides a theoretical basis and engineering analysis method for the identification of soft rock roadway, and the research results have engineering value Soft rock tunnel engineering in coal mines constitutes a vital aspect of soft rock engineering. This field broadly encompasses rock engi- neering concerning large plastic deformations, e.g., soft rock slope engineering and soft rock tunnel engineering. The intricate geological conditions encountered in soft rock tunnel engineering present a significant challenge to support, which has harmed coal production in China. China leads global raw coal production with the annual output of 4.6 billion tons. Annual tunnel excavation supporting this production spans approximately 11,000 km, with over 10% of these tunnels classified as soft rock formations. Soft rock is commonly associated with soft rock tunnels due to their prevalence in engineering projects. However, reaching a consensus on the definition of soft rock has long been an enduring challenge for scholars and engineers. Numerous definitions have been proposed, includ- ing descriptive, index, and engineering definitions. For instance, the International Society for Rock Mechanics defines soft rock based on its uniaxial compressive strength σ ranging from 0.5 to 25 MPa. China's Engineering Rock Body Standards, established in 1994 (GB 50218-94), take a qualitative and quantitative approach to classifying rocks. Rocks are categorized as hard or soft based on criteria such as hammering sound, fragmentation, water immersion effects, and weath- ering degree. Additionally, the integrity of rock bodies is assessed across five categories intact, relatively intact, soft fractured, fractured, and extremely fractured. This classification considers factors like the number and spacing of structural planes, their combination, and the types of structures. Descriptive and index-based definitions fall under the category of geological soft rocks, providing a comprehensive geological perspective on the surface features or strength characteristics. However, these definitions have limitations in engineering practice, which leads to contradic- tions. For instance, rocks with uniaxial compressive strength less than 25 MPa may not exhibit soft rock characteristics if the tunnel is shal- low with low horizontal stress levels. Conversely, rocks with compressive strength exceeding 25 MPa at sufficient depth and high horizontal stress may exhibit soft rock characteristics. Definitions originating from engineering practice have emerged after realizing the inadequacy of discussing soft rocks without considering engineering. For instance, Dong's loose circle theory defines soft rocks as rocks with a loose circle thickness exceeding 1.5 m, which chal- lenges conventional supports. This intuitive definition, widely accepted by engineering professionals, emphasizes the difficulty in supporting tunnels due to extensive damage. However, various tunnel damage poses a challenge in relying solely on the loose circle thickness of tunnels for determining soft rocks. He introduced the concept of engineering soft rocks, which are defined as rock formations exhibiting significant plastic deformations under applied engineering force. To assess the value of various subsidence mitigation techniques, twelve linear foundations were constructed above a longwall mine. The structures were monitored during and after undermining, and footing curvatures at the time of cracking were compared with predicted values. An unreinforced concrete footing sustained substantial damage. Other footings received varying degrees of damage, with inclusion of a sand layer significantly affecting performance. A post-tensioned concrete foundation suffered minimal cracking. Also, a technique developed by the Bureau of Mines is presented for determining the subsidence, slope, curvature and strain of the ground surface.

The RiverRenew Tunnel System project in Alexandria, VA forms part of a CSO scheme aimed at reducing overflows of combined stormwater and sewage into the Potomac River during storm events. A major piece of the project is a 12-foot internal diameter tunnel of approximately 12,000 feet length lined with a single-pass precast concrete segmental liner and excavated by an Earth-Pressure Balanced Shield TBM. The tunnel lies between 120 to 140 feet below grade in the clays of the Upper Potomac Formation with occasional dips of more granular, saturated soils of the Terrace Formation and the Alluvium. The TBM is launched from a figure-8 configuration Pumping/Screening Shaft located within AlexRenew’s operational Water Resource Recovery Facility. This paper discusses the challenges encountered during the launch of the TBM in short mode within a highly congested site and from narrow deep shafts.

The US minerals industry, as well we know, has been hit hard by the recent recession and is faced with what is projected to be a slow recovery. Even so, there was an underlying feeling of optimism at American Mining Congress' International Mining Show in Las Vegas, NV, Oct 11-14. More than 25,000 people attended during a particularly rough financial year, dispelling fears that attendance would dip sharply below 1978's 30,000 plus tally. The equipment expositionheld every four years-was the largest show of its kind this year in the Western Hemisphere in terms of exhibit space, providing an extensive view of mining-related equipment. In addition to the nearly 700 exhibits occupying more than 445 hm2 (11 acres), 20 technical sessions were held covering topics ranging from minerals availability and the state of the mining industries to communications, computers, and accounting. Government officials were well represented, with six US senators and five US representatives participating in various convention functions. Sen. Paul Laxalt (R-NV) was the keynote speaker at the welcoming luncheon. Other senators involved in the show included Howard W. Cannon (D-NV), Pete V. Domenici (R-NM), James A. McClure (R-ID), Frank H. Murkowski (R-AK), and Steven D. Symms (R-ID). Representatives on the program were Joseph M. Gaydos (D-PA), Guy Vander Jagt (R-MI), Don Young (R-AK), Jim Santini (D-NV), and Ceil Heftel (D-HI). There were also many international vistors at the show, including exhibitors from Australia, Austria, Canada, England, Finland, Sweden, South Africa, and West Germany. Equipment Highlights Equipment and services featured at the exposition ranged from aerial mapping to wire rope. Aisle space alone between exhibits exceeded 8 km (5 miles). And the companies represented ranged from small businesses to large corporations. Some of the company products described here are representative of the many exhibitors in attendance. Atlas Copco's extensive display of rock drilling and tunnel and shaft boring equipment featured its Boomer H-201, the newest addition to its line of underground drifting rigs; the ROC 306, a new track-mounted, high pressure down-the-hole drill rig; a new hydraulic surface crawler drill, the ROC 712H, designed for small and medium-size holes in quarries and small open-pit mines; a computerized analysis system, CARE (see page 1570), designed to project productivity and operating costs for various mining operations; several electro-hydraulic loaders, including the new rail bound LM E60 and LM E80, and two Hagg-loaders-the 7HR and 10HR-that use two digging arms to rake and guide muck; a mechanized blasthole charging system; rock bolting equipment and its new Swellex roof bolting method; Sandvik Coromant drill steel and bits; and its new Jarva R200 raise boring machine.

Effective project management is an excellent technique for meeting a goal through set, well-defined objectives. Even though project management is successfully used throughout the world in various construction projects, underground mining has unique characteristics that require approaches that vary from classical project management theory. Typically, a project includes four main stages: definition, planning, implementation and control. Definition and planning are often the most overlooked stages, but are arguably the most important. This paper addresses practical techniques for the definition and planning of projects for underground construction.

"Fluorspar is one of the most important industrial minerals. It has a wide range of applications, for example it is used in the steel and aluminum industry, and is also the raw material to produce hydrofluoric acid, Teflon or Gore-Tex. There are only a few major fluorspar mines worldwide, with China being the most important fluorspar producer (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals Information Center, 2017). At Okorusu, Namibia, fluorspar has been mined with conventional open pit mining methods from 1955 until 2014 from a large scale metasomatic fluorspar deposit with seven identified orebodies. There are about 7 million tons of measured resources left with an average grade of 27.5 % CaF2. This paper is based at an MSc thesis at Technical University Freiberg and describes the design of an underground mine for the A and D orebodies with an annual production rate of 100,000 t acid-grade fluorspar product. By comparing different mining methods and adapting variants of access to the underground orebodies the paper will emphasize on the selection of a suitable mining technology, with a special focus on the economic considerations to decide about the most profitable operation. INTRODUCTION Mining holds an important part in the economy of Namibia. In 2016 11.1 % of the GDP was made through mining activities with 22 active mines (The Chamber of Mines of Namibia, 2016). Only one of them consists an underground mining operation. The global annual production of fluorspar is approximately 6 to 7 million t (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals Information Center, 2017). Okorusu produced on average about 50.000 t annually in recent years (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals In-formation Center, 2015). Okorusu Mine is Namibia’s only fluorspar mine. Fluorspar was mined in an open pit mine with four individual pits (A-D) since 1980. In 2014 the mine closed due to the increased stripping ratio and beneficiation problems. The mine assets were bought by Gecko Namibia. Currently Gecko uses parts of the processing plant for beneficiation of graphite from a neighboring mine. Figure 1 shows a panoramic view with the four pits and the mine village. The intent is to develop a concept for the further underground development of the mine. There are still about 7 million t of measured resources left in the deposit, with an average grade of 27.5 % CaF2. This study focusses on the underground mine design. The above-ground plant and facilities are considered as remaining unchanged."

"Why geophysics? We will have to drill anyway." Reliance on geophysical methods for detailed target appraisals will increase as direct surface evidence becomes more subtle. This will create a need for more effective and efficient geo- physical programs. Numerous computer-based techniques that deal with a broad range of geophysical problems are described in the literature. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a framework for the systematic application of these techniques to effect an overall optimization of the geophysical appraisal. The concepts described are not technique specific, but should serve as a guide for increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of any geophysical program. Fig. 1 shows a generalized flow chart of the major aspects of the program described. The three main subdivisions of a 'geophysical program are discussed: (1) survey design, (2) data processing, and (3) data interpretation. Detailed flow charts, outlining the goals, the requirements for meeting the goals, and the steps followed within each subdivision are presented at the beginning of each section. The objectives and type problems of each subdivision are defined, followed by a description of applicable computer methods. . Research performed by the West Virginia University Coal Research Bureau under the sponsorship of the U. S. Bureau of Mines has demonstrated that coal-ash can be converted into mineral wool insulation of a quality equal to commercial grade mineral wool. An unexpected benefit has been gained due to the discovery that the usual and costly fluxing agents employed when using conventional raw materials are not required when producing mineral wool from coal-ash. Because coal-ash sources are commonly located close to mineral wool marketing areas and because mineral wool is seldom shipped far as a result of its low weight and high volume, the use of coal-ash may offer the mineral wool producing industry profitable opportunities. Moreover, coal-ash produced from experimental limestone based air pollution control processes also yields high quality mineral wool which may aid in retarding corrosion of metals contacted by the wool. In addition, internal fluxing effects and possible sulfur oxide utilization could provide economic advantages to the use of these "modified" ashes.

The molecular form of aliphatic amines precipitates in alkaline solutions when the amine solubility limit is exceeded and forms a typical colloidal system. The zones of mines precipitation and micellization are defined and it is shown that the appearance of a colloidal system in a certain pH range is a unique feature that makes weak electrolyte type surfactants differ from strong electrolytes. The formation of iono-molecular complexes reported in the literature is shown to be a pre-precipitation phenomenon. The zeta potential - pH curves for minerals and bubbles in the presence of amines in the pH range where the amine forms a colloidal precipitate are entirely determined by the precipitate. The pH dependence of the flotation of certain minerals using amines is discussed in the light of these findings.
