As an advanced method of rock engineering construction safety monitoring, microseismic monitoring technology can monitor the micro-fracture of rock masses within an effective range, and then perform forecast analysis of rockburst, cracking, falling blocks and other disasters. Although the application of microseismic monitoring technology has become more mature, how to improve its application efficiency remains to be further studied. At present, artificial intelligence has been extensively developed, and the use of intelligent algorithms to improve the efficiency of rockburst forecast can provide a valuable reference for the safe construction of underground engineering. To this end, this paper proposes a microseismic multi-parameter rockburst early warning model based on dynamic Bayesian networks. First, the sensitivity of microseismic source parameters to rockburst forecast is analyzed based on microseismic monitoring data and actual rockburst information of a hydropower station. Second, the main seismic source parameters and their data are selected and imported into a dynamic Bayesian network for learning to obtain the rockburst forecast model. The model is confirmed in its self-validation and K times cross-validation, and the receiver operating characteristic curve of the model is also analyzed, it is found that the area under the curve is close to 1, indicating that the model has good accuracy. Finally, the analysis of the influence strength of the parent and child nodes in the model reveals that the moment magnitude and source scale are the most sensitive parameters, which can be used as an important reference for rockburst forecast.

Analytical costs are a major part of exploration programs in developing nations which may lack adequate laboratories. Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), a variant of atomic emission spectroscopy, can reduce exploration analytical costs and can provide the analytical results in <1 minute. CPI is now marketing battery-powered, backpack mounted analyzers, using LIBS to analyze for many elements of interest to the explorationist. LIBS is well suited to the analysis of elements in industrial minerals. Limits of detection in ppm for some of these are: Li-1, Be-2, Na-100, B-33, Sr-10, Ba-300, Cs-1, K-500, Fe-500, Mg-500, and Ti-500.

A system based on seismic techniques has been developed to detect and locate men trapped underground following a mine disaster. Both theoretical and field studies have been used to generate models to predict the performance of the system. For a strong source, it is almost certain that the miner&apos;s signal will be detected if the geophone array can be positioned over a likely area of entrapment. After signal processing, it is highly likely that the location of the miner can be determined within an accuracy of 100 ft (30.5 m). The system is presently operational in a state of readiness in the event of a mine disaster.

This United States Bureau of Mines study is based on a review of U.S. mine fire accidents that occurred from 1970 through 1989. Information on these accidents was obtained through investigative reports written by Mine Safety and Health Administration personnel. For this study, 260 mine fire accident reports were examined. A previous Bureau research effort established that fires causing fatalities were more likely to occur in haulage entries than at any other underground location. This study has found that the most prolific source of haulage entry fires was the inadvertent grounding of trolley wires. The largest segment (15 out of 40 trolley wire fires) resulted from not maintaining adequate clearance between the trolley wire and the vehicle. Several novel fire prevention and control ideas have evolved in response to frequently occurring fire-related problems. These included; discriminating power isolation devices, wire cutting devices, more accessible fire extinguishers, vehicle overcurrent protection, and vehicle fire suppression.

For thousands of years gold has been not only a commodity, valued for its comparative scarceness, immutability and homogeneity but also a medium of exchange which has no nationality. Approximately 90% of the gold produced is still accessible in the world, although some of it in museums, galleries, jewellery and dental work is not immediately available for circulation. The majority is held as bars by central banks for their reserves; the balance circulates as coinage or bullion held for investment. The value is further enhanced by the political aspect that gold cannot be debased as paper currency can and, therefore, it always becomes an investment refuge. It has always been possible to buy and sell gold at a price which is readily established by reference to bullion&apos;s weight and purity; and it is this fact which makes a loan denominated in gold, rather than one in currency, a viable alternative means of finance. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some general aspects of what is considered to be one of the more effective and presently popular methods of financing the development of a gold mine - the gold loan. This is not intended to discuss all the minute details which must be uniquely designed to fit each individual situation, but rather to provide general guidelines. You will all be aware of the traditional sequence whereby companies primarily finance exploration work by the raising of equity through the sale of shares to the public or by that unique Canadian form.

This report covers laboratory experiments simulating in situ copper recovery from primary sulfide ores in sulfuric acid systems pressurized with oxygen. Copper extraction and acid consumption data are correlated with temperature in the range 50-150°C and quenched pH in the range 0.25-2. Adverse changes in the chemical composition of the leach solution and the formation of gangue-mineral alteration products and secondary sulfides can severely limit the extraction of copper above 90°C. Keeping the pH below the self-buffered value of about 2 and the temperature below about 110°C produces the maximum extraction rates. Forcing the pH too low not only results in excessively high acid consumption but may also limit the extraction of copper at temperatures above 100°C.

Since the petroleum crisis in 1973, charcoal1 is being considered one of the most important fuel for the Brazilian consumers, mainly for pellet&apos;s producers. In replacing fuel by charcoal mixed up with ore, obviously one of the first thing to be investigated is its influence in the product&apos;s quality. Special attention has been given to the metallurgical characteristics. This paper infocus the effect of increasing dosings of charcoal to the pellet&apos;s porosity and how other physical and metallurgical characteristics will be affected accordingly. This work was carried out using two different finesses of charcoal and dosing varied from 0.5 to 2.0%.

A test section of the upper most lift and underlying lifts of a large scale copper heap leach operation was instrumented and monitored with advanced wireline geophysics, fiber optics and resistivity electrode arrays. Elemental Capture Spectroscopy (ESC) copper measurements, resistivity measurements from an Array Induction Tool (AIT), electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and distributed temperature sensing (DTS) with fiber optics provided integrated near real time data about the performance of the heap. During the leaching cycle, ECS provided continuous vertical measurements of copper in the upper most and underlying lifts in the test section of the heap and was used to generate a copper recovery curve. ERT inversion modeling provided high resolution 3D resistivity measurements, which were used to evaluate moisture distribution. DTS measurements of temperature were used to track the PLS front and calculate velocity. AIT induction provided highly precise bulk resistivity measurements. In-situ samplers provided PLS chemistry at multiple points. Properly integrated monitoring data can provide the heap leach operator with information that can be used to evaluate the hydrodynamics and metallurgy of the leaching process in near real time. Problems in the heap, such as pooling, channeling, longer lag and breakthrough times, excess acid consumption, increased solution in inventory, toe saturation and slope stability can be detected in near real time with the in-situ measurements evaluated.

Turquoise Ridge is an underground gold mine located in the Potosi Mining District, approximately 64 km northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada. Turquoise Ridge Underground is accessed via two shafts and a system of internal ramps and utilizes underhand drift and fill mining methods with cemented rockfill. The mine also employs mechanical mining as well as sill benching as mining methods. Ground conditions at Turquoise Ridge Underground are poor, and the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) may be less than 20, or very poor, in ore headings. Current production rate is 2,700 tonnes of ore per day. Key challenges in increasing production levels and reducing costs are the development of sufficient stoping areas and the transition from top-cut development to undercut stoping. Completion of the infrastructure development in the North Zone is necessary to achieve and optimize higher production levels. The #3 Shaft project is well underway and is expected to be commissioned in mid. 2022. The shaft will drastically decrease the haulage requirements in the North Zone

Epithermal vein systems are often modeled as simple, discrete high grade structures within low grade host rock. However, geologic setting and structural preparation influence how such vein systems form. In structurally complex areas, veins may follow several structural trends and occur on a variety of scales. Geologic and grade modeling within such complex structural regimes can be difficult as individual veins cannot be delineated from host rock based on grade alone. Structurally complex areas require a different approach than traditional discrete vein modeling. Presented herein is a study of a structurally complex area that hosts vein mineralization to be mined underground. All veins could not be modeled discretely, so an alternate approach was needed. Major structures were modeled using surface and underground mapping and were then used to create a structural trend for the area. This trend was used to guide 3D grade shell construction. The grade shells replaced 3D vein solids for grade estimation in order to mitigate the influence of high grade samples. Structurally guided grade shell construction offers a more effective modeling method than discrete vein modeling in deposits that are structurally complex.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has collected pillar and span data at 34 stone mines in 10 states to develop pillar and roof span design guidelines for underground stone mines. Pillar, floor and roof conditions each contribute significantly to the overall mine stability. The roof may be stable for a century, or it may appear to be stable but fail with little warning. Clearly, an assessment of the mine roof is critical to the safety of these operations. However, up until now, the assessment of the mine roof came primarily from exposures in roof falls or portal areas. This provides only limited information, and a more proactive approach is needed to assess changing mine conditions. A separate effort was undertaken to examine the roof structure with the use of a borescope. Numerous physical and geologic roof structures were observed with a stratascope/borehole video camera. The objective of this work was to develop a technique of assigning numerical values to features seen within the mine roof and apply those values to formulate a roof stability evaluation. Such features as changes in color, grain size, and general lithologies are readily observed. Minor structures in the rock, fossils and fractures are also readily identified. Each feature may have a variable and site-specific impact on roof quality. A number of mines were visited and a series of holes were borescoped in each mine. The features identified in the roof were classified and potential for roof damage related to each feature was assessed. A process is presented that relates the structures and their locations to provide a numerical value, or roof quality index that can be used to assess roof stability.

The ability to process complex precious metal sulfide concentrates containing antimony and arsenic in an economic and environmentally safe manner is an important problem facing the mining industry in the United States. Preliminary experiments have been performed to evaluate the possibility of treating a complex sulfide concentrate to recover antimony and precious metals while fixing the arsenic and sulfur as calcium arsenate and calcium sulfate. The process involves: • the oxidation of the antimony and arsenic minerals in the presence of soda ash (to collect the sulfur dioxide and to keep the antimony and arsenic from forming volatile compounds), •the selective leaching of the arsenic from the roast calcine with a heated caustic solution, •the precipitation of the arsenic and sulfate with calcium hydroxide and/or calcium chloride, •the reduction of the residual antimony (collecting the precious metals), •fuming of the metal to form a marketable antimony oxide, and •crucible reduction of the residue to obtain a gold and silver dore. Batch experiments, using synthetic concentrates of stibnite and arsenopyrite, were performed to evaluate the first stage of this process. Variables studied included mixture weight fractions, temperature, gas flow rate, oxygen partial pressure, and time. All of the off gas dust and sulfur containing gases were collected and analyzed. The roast solid residues were subjected to arsenic leach tests, and the leach solutions were subjected to arsenic and sulfate precipitation tests. Introduction The ability to treat a precious metal ore containing appreciable amounts of antimony and arsenic is dependent upon the characteristics of the ore. For some ores, selective flotation can be used to separate the antimony and arsenic minerals, which are then treated separately. Unfortunately, many ores are not treatable in this way, and the concentrates obtained may contain appreciable contamination (which limits the ability to make acceptable grade antimony products). If we consider the added value of the precious metals in the concentrate, then it is worthwhile to evaluate the potential for new methods to treat these types of concentrates. In addition, the environmental difficulties associated with arsenic disposal must be taken into account in any proposed process. If there is appreciable arsenic present, then it must be either recovered as a marketable product or placed in an insoluble form. The problem addressed in this research program has become increasingly important as the precious metals mining industry is encountering more ores of this type. A large deposit of this type exists in Idaho where the antimony occurs primarily as stibnite, with minor amounts of kermesite and tetrahedrite (Cooper, 1951). The gold appears in association with arsenopyrite with minor amounts of other arsenic minerals. Flotation has been used to obtain an antimony concentrate. The concentrate, however, is contaminated with appreciable amounts of arsenic and also contains precious metals. If the ore or concentrate contains appreciable amounts of base metals, then the recovery process becomes much more difficult. There are a number of other known deposits of this type in Alaska, Canada, Montana and elsewhere. The objective of this research program was to develop a fundamental understanding of the oxidation and leaching chemistry of the arsenic and antimony minerals so that technology may be developed to treat these ores in an economic and environmentally safe manner. Wendt (1949) and Koster and Royer (1940) discussed the possibilities of oxidative roasting of stibnite concentrates containing arsenic. Wendt describes a process used at a smelter in Czechoslovakia (in the 1930s) where roasting was carried out in rotary furnaces at 723° K (500° C). Most of the arsenic was removed as fume, as well as 25% of the antimony. No sulfur dioxide containment was described. The oxide fume from the furnace went to a heated caustic water leach, where the arsenic was preferentially dissolved and then precipitated with calcium chloride as calcium arsenate following solid-liquid separation. The antimony oxide was sold, and the solid oxide discharge from the rotary furnace was sent to a blast furnace where the antimony metal, containing the precious metals, was recovered. "INTRODUCTION For many automation and safety tasks in open cut and underground scenarios it is crucial to have highly reliable distance measurements at hand. These measurements can for instance be used to obtain the exact position of a machine in one-, two- or even three dimensions. Research and development has shown interest in the ultra-wide-band technology (UWB) in recent years. While for this technology short range, high speed data transfer is the current main research focus, the technology can also be used for highly accurate ranging applications. Due to the use of a very wide frequency band, it is robust against disturbances of many types (e.g. EMC, rain, dust etc.) and is therefore attractive for the use in mining applications. The wide frequency band also offers benefits for ranging applications. Especially in environments with strong multipath problems such as in underground mines it is possible to focus on the dominant signal propagation path, thus increasing the reliability of the measurements. [1] State-of-the-art UWB ranging equipment claims precision within the range of a couple of centimeters and working ranges of more than hundred meters. At the Institute for Mining and Metallurgical Machinery (IMR) at RWTH Aachen University in Germany a modern UWB system was examined in several laboratory and real life tests to examine the feasibility of UWB bases ranging equipment in mining applications. UWB TECHNOLOGY The term ultra-wide-band denotes radio systems that use an ultra-wide frequency band. A common definition for UWB radio systems is that it needs to work on a frequency bandwidth of more than 500 MHz or a bandwidth equal to 20% or more of the center frequency [1]. Due to the ultra-wide frequency bandwidth UWB systems overlap the frequency spectrum of narrow band radio technologies like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other mobile communication systems which use a defined carrier frequency onto which information is modulated on (e.g. by using frequency or phase modulation). In order to not conflict with these other radio applications, it needs to be ascertained that the transmission power of a UWB system on a given frequency is so low that narrow band systems are not affected by it. As opposed to this only a small fraction of the UWB system’s bandwidth is affected by the narrow band system. The unaffected remaining bandwidth is sufficient to reconstruct the original signal, even if additional noise is present. Figure 1 shows the power spectral densities of popular radio standards [6], [7], [8]. A significant driver of research and development of UWB systems has been wireless high bandwidth communication. Using an ultra-wide frequency band is highly desirable here, as the channel capacity is dependent on the bandwidth. So far systems have been realized especially for short distances (e.g. wireless USB or Wireless HDMI) but beyond that, communication systems for long distances (several kilometers) are possible [2]. Advances in semiconductor technology led to a reduction in power dissipation of such systems. This enabled higher integration levels which in turn facilitated smaller solution sizes for space constrained applications [3]. Nowadays, UWB is also used for high-precision ranging applications [4], [5]."

This first section of case histories of mineral discoveries, Vol. 3, covers some of the milestones in porphyry copper and skam exploration successes. It was during the era of these discoveries that large, complex exploration departments emerged as permanent adjuncts of large mining companies. The discoveries helped shape how and where exploration activity was conducted. Probably the most important factor in exploration success is management. Few management people are mentioned in this section or in any exploration history, yet the distinction between success and failure ultimately rested with the decisions they made. One of the most successful groups was initiated by Roger Straus and Herbert Brownell when they sought to make Asarco into an important metal producer. Relying on Clem Pollock and L.H. (Bill) Hart to identify and push worthwhile projects, the Asarco management remade the company. Asarco will benefit from exploration successes com- pounded by that team for years to come. Duval is an example of a management that decided to add metal production to its industrial minerals output. When Page Morris was president, that company opened three major porphyry copper mines and became an important factor in metals. Under the Monis management team, Duval became a leader in exploration. At the other end of the scale are managements that snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and by so doing changed the character of their companies in other ways.

Application of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) is one of the main solutions to achieve a safe and high-performance method of construction in hard rock and soft ground tunneling. In order to adequately assess the progress and potential impacts of the tunneling operations with the TBM, it is required to record a series of data during the tunneling and process of the data to evaluate the TBM performance. Applying the right machine parameters during the excavation not only delivers an optimum penetration rate, but also prevents extra downtime due to over excavation or wear of cutting tools. In this paper, the effect of machine and operational parameters on TBM downtimes has been studied and supported with the real examples of TBM operation data.

"In the present study, the effect of organic/inorganic (hybrid) polyacrylamide polymer on fine coal flotation was investigated. Raw coal samples contain about 37% of ash-forming mineral at a feed size of -75 + 38 um were subjected to flotation tests in the presence of in-house synthesized hybrid Al(OH)3-PAM at different polymer dosages and pH values. Results show a significant improvement in both combustible recovery and ash rejection at 1 ppm polymer dosage. Further improvement of combustible recovery was obtained when flotation was performed at pH 5. Interfacial properties of coal particles before and after flotation were examined through electrokinetic (zeta potential) measurements of coal/water slurries. Zeta potential vs. pH curve were established and compared. In the case of raw coal/water slurry, zeta potential-pH curve resembles the ash-forming minerals (silica and clays) more than coal. After Al(OH)3-PAM-assisted flotation, the zeta potential of froth/water slurry shifted to more positive values point which strongly indicates significant removal of ash-forming minerals from coal by Al(OH)3-PAM. INTRODUCTION Coal has been a major commodity in meeting the world energy demand during the past several decades (Milici et al., 2013). According to the international energy agency, global coal demand will continue to increase for the coming decades. With increasing world population, the global electricity demand would also increase as more people would get access to basic electricity especially in developing countries (Maggio & Cacciola, 2012). Due to this increase in energy consumption, operations in coal mining and beneficiation processes have been highly mechanized to meet the demands. This mechanization has increased the quantity of raw fine coal particles produced which contain high amount of ash-forming mineral matter (slimes). Aplan et al., have reported that the major constituents of ash-forming minerals in U.S.A coal are clay minerals such as kaolinite, montmorillonite and illite (Aplan, 1997). Conventional froth flotation for fine coal cleaning suffers mainly from two major problems: 1) Low recovery of ultrafine coal particles due to slime coating by ash-forming minerals, and 2) The lack of selectivity, which results in the flotation of middlings and entrainment of mineral fines in the froth (Polat et al., 2003). Slime coating on both valuable and air bubbles have been proposed to explain the observed reduction in flotation recovery especially when fine grinding is required. In this case mineral matter may be degraded to extremely fine or colloidal sizes thereby creating difficulty in the water clarification process such as flotation. Slimes inhibit bubble-particle attachment, and increases reagent consumption due to the increase in solid/liquid interfacial area, resulting in low coal recovery."

Interwest Mining Company has been collecting geologic data within the last decade in preparation for underground mining of extensive coal reserves in its Bridger Coal property in southwestern Wyoming. During a preliminary data collection program in 2000, Interwest Mining completed geologic investigations, including surface mapping, drilling, aerial photography, rock testing, and limited groundwater investigations. Core from 12 exploration boreholes in the area of interest was tested to determine the mechanical properties of the coal seam and the immediate roof and floor for evaluation of the feasibility of underground mining. Geologic investigations identified the presence of one 7-to-17-ft-thick coal seam throughout the reserve under 1400 ft of cover. During a geotechnical feasibility study in 2002, the authors reviewed available data while completing comparative analyses identifying critical deficiencies in these data. The study projected moderate-to-difficult mining conditions, considering the weak nature of near-seam strata and depth of cover, and thus recommended limiting the longwall reserves to an overburden depth of less than 900 ft. These shallow remaining reserves were located at depths within regional mining experience to justify longwall mining methods. Based on a critical examination of available data, Bridger proceeded with more detailed data collection to improve understanding of the depositional and structural setting of the reserve, hydrogeologic conditions, overburden strength, and premining stress conditions. Additional data was collected during 2003 and 2004 field programs. Since 2003, Bridger has had the opportunity to observe ground behavior in a series of up to 1200-1600-ft- long rectangular openings created during highwall mining. These narrow unsupported openings remained stable in the short term in large areas but the overburden subsided locally in the long-term depending on geologic and panel layout designs. These localized subsidence events allowed an examination of in-situ coal strength based on back analyses of stress. The unextracted highwall areas near Ramp 17 provided an ideal location to access the underground reserves using a 6-entry set of mains. The existing north-south oriented longwall layout for the Bridger Coal was selected by Bridger to maximize resource recovery from the D41 reserves while considering operational and geotechnical constraints. At 45-degrees deviation from preexisting joints and mild horizontal stress field, this orientation was considered beneficial for overall stability while using both sets of joints for facilitating the caving process. The present layout utilizes pillars on 80- to 90- by 200-ft centers, 17-ft entry spans and 750-ft wide longwall panels (Figure 1). Gate pillars are on wide spacings and are intended to act as abutment-abutment pillars to limit strata deformation over the gateroads during longwall mining.

Generally speaking, it is safe to address this conference as a conclave of Engineers, Owners&apos; Agents, Governmental Representatives, and Contractors. As a group, we have assembled here to learn of our compatriots engaged in similiar underground operations throughout the United States and the World. We are here to learn of improved methods, higher technology, and better management. Through the acquisition of this knowledge, we each hope we can improve our own particular services, products and projects. This session is dedicated to a discussion of "Costs". The most apparent reason for a discussion of costs at this level is to expose subjects affecting costs and propose methods to reduce them. From that premise a contractor can identify three areas of discussion: design considerations, contract considerations, and governmental considerations. A fourth area of consideration is an introspective view of the contractor&apos;s role in the design construct process. Unnecessary costs and risks attributable to these areas are contributing excessively to ever increasing project and system costs. DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS On April 20, 1977 the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago accepted proposals for the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan on Contract A and Contract B. This letting called for construction of over 33 km (21 miles) of the Mainstream Tunnel bored at 9.75 m (32 ft) to 10.67 m (35 ft.) in diameter.
