The new Los Angeles, California JWPCP effluent outfall tunnel will transport secondary-treated effluent from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant in Carson to White Point Manifold. The tunnel will be approximately 7 miles (11 km) long with a finished internal diameter of 18 ft (5.5 m). The TBM is designed to cope with high water pressure up to 10 bar. The geotechnical challenges are due to the heterogeneous subsurface conditions: in the first half of the alignment, the tunnel runs through soils with a low overburden under urban areas, and, in the second half, the tunnel runs through extremely weak, intensely faulted rock masses with high overburden. Following an overview of the project, this paper focuses on the northern portion of the alignment and presents a decision-making procedure developed during pre-excavation phase in order to cope with the expected heterogeneous conditions during mining. The risk assessment and the TBM operational design of the southern portion will be dealt with in a future paper.

I am sure it is obvious to all of you that a complete program of casualty and property insurance is as necessary for any tunneling contractor as it is for anyone else involved in trade in the United States today. Going beyond those general undefined terms, there are many areas that need specific attention, particularly for contractors, regardless of size. WORKERS' COMPENSATION Workers' Compensation is mandatory in all states and the District of Columbia. In most of the states, private insurance provides this coverage. In a few states, the state operates Workers' Compensation funds, some of which are competitive with the private sector and others are operated on a monopolistic basis. Under a monopolistic setup, you have no choice, you must buy coverage from the state. Self insurance of the Workers' Compensation risk is also an alternative in most jurisdictions. With a contractor operating only in the U.S., the coverage extensions are few in number. If your work brings you anywhere near navigable waterways or land extensions thereof, you should have both U. S. Longshoreman and Harborworkers' coverage, as well as Employer's Liability coverage for the master or members of the crew of a vessel.

Since 2016, electromagnetic interference (EMI) of personal dust monitors (PDMs) with magnetic proximity detection systems (PDSs) has been observed in underground coal mines. The EMI causes the magnetic field measurements of a PDS to change, which, in turn, alters the calculated location of the miner relative to the machine. Any altered location calculation can potentially cause the PDS to fail to warn a worker who is at an unsafe distance from the machine, arousing a serious concern on safety hazard caused by EMI in underground mines. The search for EMI mitigation strategies led to the development and use of large shielding pouches and boxes to hold the entire PDM to reduce its magnetic emission. Research on these pouches and boxes found that although they were able to reduce the emitted radiation from the PDM, they also disturbed the magnetic field of the PDS, affecting its performance. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have focused on shielding internal PDM components rather than shielding the entire PDM. The PDM air pump motor is one of the PDM components that has been identified as a major source of electromagnetic radiation and has been selected for further study and tests. The measurements show that a small copper or aluminum foil enclosure can effectively reduce the magnetic emission of the motor by between 50 and 85% at 73 kHz. This study compares the test results of the air pump motor with various cost-effective shielding materials. The data provided in this paper can serve as a reference for shielding enclosure design of the PDM air pump motor to reduce its electromagnetic emission as one form of EMI mitigation strategy.

Since the advent of longwall mining systems in the United States, mine operators are increasingly relying on methane drainage techniques to supplement the ventilation system. The most commonly used technique is the vertical gob borehole. The number and spacing of vertical gob boreholes per panel is generally based on experience and underground conditions. To design a more efficient methane drainage systems, mine operators must accurately determine methane gas produced. Thus, mine operators must monitor gas flow and methane gas concentration on every vertical gob borehole on active panels at least once or twice during each 8-hr shift. As the mine grows, it is possible to have more than one operating longwall and many vertical gob boreholes. Thus, daily visits to each vertical gob borehole site can become very time consuming. During weekends when methane gas concentrations typically drop because there is no mining activity, borehole sites may not be visited. To obtain accurate gas flow data, a gob borehole monitoring system was designed and constructed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM). Gas flow, methane gas concentration, gas temperature, barometric pressure, and vacuum pressure of the exhaust fan are the parameters collected by the system. The system also includes circuitry for automatic shutdown of the exhaust fan and an alarm system before an unsafe condition is created. Telemetry components were also integrated into the system to allow for transmission of borehole data to the mine office. As a test, the system was installed and operated on a vertical gob borehole for six months. Test results indicated that intermittent measurements with hand-held instruments from vertical gob boreholes were always higher than gas flows measurements made by the gob gas analyzer system. This paper describes the system components, operational characteristics, and the results of the test program.

New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland dominate Australian black coal production and exports. NSW produced 86 Mt (95 million st) of saleable coal in 1994, a doubling of output since 1980. Asian demand for thermal and coking coal has driven this growth. This high Asian demand is expected to continue and NSW will seek to secure its share. History The history of the New South Wales (NSW) coal industry can be traced to 1797 when coal was first taken from Newcastle to Sydney (Ellis, 1969). At that time, NSW was a British colony, independent from the other colonies, such as Victoria and Queensland. Australia, as a federation of colonies, did not exist until 1901. The Newcastle coal industry grew through the 1800s in line with the growth of the colonies. Several events spurred demand for Newcastle coal. These included: ? The NSW and Victorian gold rushes of the 1850s and associated population growth. ? The development of steamship traffic at the expense of sail. ? The development of railways and town gas supplies. By 1900, Australia was producing 6.4 Mt (7 million st) of coal, most of it from NSW. By then, NSW had established strong export markets in Indonesia, China, Japan and New Zealand. The history of energy consumption is marked by continual competition, changing intensity of use and substitution. From 1900 to 1940, the Queensland, Victorian and Indonesian coal industries developed at the expense of NSW exports. Similarly, New Zealand developed its hydroelectric industry and thus declined as the largest customer for NSW coal. Oil replaced steam in the shipping and railway markets and electricity replaced gas for lighting. Industrial efficiencies also affected coal. Between 1928 and 1938, coal consumed in generating power fell from by 17% on a kilowatt hour basis and, during the same period, the amount of gas produced per ton of coal rose by 18% (Shaw and Bruno). Faced with these pressures, production and exports stagnated. By 1941, Australian black coal production was 14.2 Mt (15.6 million st). NSW's production was 11.7 Mt (12 million st), up only 19% from 1912. Exports had virtually ceased (Fig. 1). In such circumstances, the industry had lost focus. Unions resisted the need for mechanization, for security of employment reasons, and owners were loath to invest. This reluctance to mechanize and the associated in-

Lack of visibility from cabs of the large haulage trucks used in open-pit mines has become a serious safety problem. This Anaconda research program was conducted to develop a low-cost system for alerting haulage truck operators of the presence of small vehicles in their blind areas. Several systems, developed and tested to help solve this problem, are summarized and evaluated in this paper. As the size of the haulage trucks used in large open-pit mines has increased, so have the blind areas. Mine utility vehicles, pickup tucks and cars become concealed within these blind areas and, thus, become a serious safety hazard. Figure 1 shows the typical blind areas of a 150-ton haulage truck. The areas of greatest concern are those at the rear center and front right corner of the truck. It is within these areas of "no visibility" that numerous small vehicles over the years have been crushed by the large haulage trucks at various mine sites. Although the occupants in most instances, have escaped the vehicle before it was destroyed, injuries and deaths have occurred. The accidents, in most cases, were attributed to negligence or carelessness on the part of the driver of the smaller vehicle, but the problem of limited visibility still exists, and a solution is needed.

The Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC) Combined Sewer Overflow Abatement Program is a major effort to address and mitigate discharges from combined sewer overflows in the Providence, Rhode Island area. The proposed system consists of three deep rock tunnel segments totaling 17.8 km (11.1 miles) in length that will provide 860,000 cu m (227 million gal) of storage at depths up to 99m (325 ft). This paper discusses 13.5 km (8.4 miles) of 6.64m (21.8 ft) finished diameter tunnel, four construction shafts, 19 dropshafts and one large diameter pump station shaft tapered from 1 5.2m (50 ft) at the surface to 27.4m (90 ft) at depth. All facilities are in preliminary design.

Indicator simulation allows specification of different continuity of high and low values through the use of grade thresholds. The sequential implementation of indicator simulation has been widely used, but the problem of order relation deviations remains a significant drawback. A new procedure for "Hierarchical Indicator Simulation" is introduced that avoids order relations and offers greater flexibility than the conventional sequential approach. The new implementation simulates all locations at the largest threshold and then considers decreasing thresholds in turn. All nodes with grades that are above the previous threshold are excluded from the domain of the current threshold and therefore, they are not used as conditioning data. The probability of being above or below the threshold is calculated using simple indicator kriging using all conditioning data in the domain, thus the covariance structure is preserved. The theoretical framework of this new approach is fully developed. Practical implementation details are discussed. Application to a copper deposit shows the advantages and drawbacks of the method. Finally, the possibility of incorporating multiple-point statistics is discussed.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) is one of the underground mines operated by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). DMLZ is located approximately 1,500 m below ground level, where dominant rock types are skarn and diorite. The DMLZ mine and layout was designed based on the previous mine located above ground, the Deep Ore Zone (DOZ). The DOZ mine, located approximately 1,000 m below ground level, was a proven success, with a maximum capacity of 80K tonnes per day. During the production ramp up, which started in 2015, the DMLZ experienced several seismic events. The most significant event occurred in January 2018 with a recorded magnitude of more than 2.0 Mw, which resulted in a 14-month delay of the undercutting until March 2019. The significant event in January 2018 required the DMLZ to apply several adjustments related to the mining plan to help ensure it could continue development and achieve production target safely. This paper will describe the changes in the DMLZ mine plan as a response to the seismic activity at the mine, the reason behind the decisions being made to change the mine plan and strategy, as well as strengths and weaknesses between the previous plan compared with the new plan.

Theoretical considerations, experimental results and plant experience have lead to a new design concept called the unit reactor approach. It has been successfully implemented to the largest flotation cell on the market, the 4000 cu ft OK TankCell. The work has also lead to a new operating idea called size specific flotation. The paper discusses these concepts in the view of full scale field experiments. In large scale porphyry copper flotation experiments conducted in Chile the new large TankCell with its new low energy input Free Flow mechanism out-performed the more conventional designs. The recovery was substantially better, especially in the coarse fractions. In some experiments the difference in total recovery was up to 10%-units and the savings in total energy consumption at the same time over 40%.

INTRODUCTION The demand for tunnelling can be related to urban population size and density; often, tunnelling occurs when a certain city size and density threshold is reached, and increases thereafter as a function of those population characteristics. Subways for rail mass transit are the most notable example, of course, but tunnels for water supply and perhaps for sewerage can also be related to size and density. As cities grow large they sometimes outgrow their local water supply and have to import water from distant places via tunnels; witness New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco. And it has been suggested that Chicago use deep tunnels for storm water storage because tertiary treatment to meet water quality standards will require treating storm water runoff.(1) Other uses of underground space also increase with urban density, e.g., underground parking, concourses and shopping centers such as Rockefeller Center in New York City and the Place Ville-Marie in Montreal. These examples can be viewed as illustrative of the central point of urban land economics. As the number of people locating in a place increase, they bid up land values and make the more intensive use of land economic, with land defined to embrace the space both above and below the surface. Hence, we are led to think about the city, and of urban land use, in three dimensions. Now, if we accept the relation of underground space use to urban size and density, recent demographic trends seem anything but hopeful for future tunnelling demand: urban density is declining, population growth is slowing down generally, and there

Critical mineral endowment of mine wastes in two mining districts in New Mexico (Copper Flat at Hillsboro and Carlisle-Center mines in the Steeple Rock district) will be characterized and estimated. “Beta-testing” of USGS procedures was performed. Potential critical minerals at these deposits include As, Bi, Te, Zn, Co, Ni, Mg, Mn, and fluorite. pH and particle size of samples were analyzed to determine weathering and migration potential of heavy metals. Soil pH was also measured to determine the potential for Acid Rock Drainage. The pH of the waste rock piles ranged from 3.66 to 5.67 which indicates fine- grained pyrite or sulfide oxidation. The samples collected from the tailings however, showed a different range of pH, from 6.30 to 8.62, probably due to the presence of carbonates. Difference in particle size fractions and its distribution along the slope are generally influenced by natural occurrences (e.g., gravity and pre-mining hydrothermal alteration) and operational activities such as material piling or dumping. Future work includes analyses of mineralogy and particle size correlation and estimation of critical mineral endowment of these mine wastes at New Mexico.

INTRODUCTION Investigations of radon and radon daughter concentrations in Swedish [non-uranium] mines started in the late 1960's. The first screening measurements showed that the average annual exposure to radon and radon daughter products was 4.7 WLM. The main reason for high radon and radon daughter concentrations was inefficient ventilation and radonrich water entering the mine. In the radon regulations worked out later it was stated that no miner should be exposed to more than 60 000 pCi h/1 equilibrium equivalent concentration of radon annual exposure, corresponding to 3.6 WLM. Now, 1981 the situation has changed considerably. From the average annual exposure of 4.7 WLM in 1970 it is now only 0.7 WLM. Sweden has up to now had only one [uranium] mine and the work there has only been investigative. However, there are plans for a commercial uranium mine in another part of Sweden. The radon problems in these mines are widely different depending on the mineralogy. NON-URANIUM MINES The radiation problems in Swedish mines were not recognised until the late 60's. The first radon and radon daughter measurements were made in some sulphide ore mines in 1967 (1). The radon and radon daughter concentrations were surprisingly high for non-uranium mines. In order to have a complete picture of the radon situation in Swedish mines the National Institute of Radiation Protection (NIRP) decided to make measurements in all, at that time about 60 mines (2). To get results as fast as possible measurements on radon gas seemed most appropriate to start with. Sampling was made by mailing a number of evacuated 4.8 litre conventional propane containers from NIRP to each mine. The containers were then opened at the place of interest. After sampling the containers were sealed and then mailed back to the institute for measurement. The measurements were made in ionization chambers. This method only gave the radon concentration and the radon daughter concentration was estimated by multiplying the radon concentration by an assumed equilibrium factor. The equilibrium factor is defined as the ratio of the total potential alpha energy for the given daughter concentration to the total potential alpha energy of the daughters if they are in equilibrium with the given radon concentration. The results of this first preliminary survey indicated that a great many of the Swedish miners probably had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. As the radiation exposure in non-uranium mines was not regulated in either the Swedish Radiation Protection Act or the Swedish Labour Protection Act work was started on special radon regulations. A lung cancer mortality study was also started. To check the results of the first survey and to get experience and knowledge of radon problems in mines, it was decided that personnel from the NIRP should visit each mine for a detailed investigation of radon and radon daughter concentrations starting with the ones with the highest radon concentrations. The main reasons for these so-called "basic measurements" were: 1. To estimate the doses received by Swedish miners 2. To find the sources of the high radon and radon daughter concentrations 3. To find appropriate counter-measures 4. To determine the most typical equilibrium factor for each mine. Unlike most uranium mines the reason for high radon concentrations in non-uranium mines is seldom the occurrence of highly radioactive minerals. The main sources were found to be waste-rock and radon-rich water. In order to filter and warm up the inlet air, especially in winter time, it was very common at that time to suck the air through broken wasterock. By doing so the air was contaminated with radon from the waste-rock and radon-rich water in it. It is noteworthy that the radium and uranium concentration in the waste-rock is relatively low. The uranium concentration is only of the order of 15 - 20 ppm. The action to prevent this contamination of the inlet air was to change the direction of the ventilation and in the case of radon-rich water entering the mine the action was to prevent the air coming into contact with the water. The first calculation of the radon daughter exposure of Swedish miners was based on radon gas measurements. The radon daughter concentration was estimated by using an assumed equilibrium factor of 0.5. Later when the mines were visited by institute staff it was possible to compare the assumed equilibrium factor with the measured ones. It was found that the factor varied from 0.15 at the air inlet to 1.0 at the air outlet and the average equilibrium factor on workplaces for almost all mines was between 0.4 and 0.6. The result of the exposure calculation in 1970 showed that more than 40 % of the miners had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. The paper gives a short resumé of the findings of the joint US - Swedish "Mechanical Boring (MB) or Drill and Blast Tunneling (DB) ? Workshop" in Stockholm December 1976. New developments and trends in both MB and DB techniques in Europe since 1976 are described, and information is given on some interesting new projects. Differences in contracting principles between the US and Europe lead to different practices for preinvestigations, design, excavation and arbitration and legal affairs. It is shown that this often leads to a higher cost in the US than in Europe for similar excavation jobs. A typical US tunnel job also has more men on the site than a similar job in Europe. This adds to the cost difference and is only partly balanced by a slightly higher rate of excavation in the US. A comparison is made between two quantitative methods of predicting MB penetration rates. These are in reasonable agreement. A probable future development in machine design is an increase in cutter load towards perhaps 25 tons per disc where the tunnel diameter is large enough to house the machine size dictated by the size of the very large electric motors required. Recent European developments in drill and blast technique include improved methods for cautious blasting, precision hydraulic drilling of small diameter holes, and non-electric interval blasting techniques. These developments still keep the drill and blast method ahead of mechanical boring costwise for tunnels in igneous rock whereas for most sedimentary materials mechanical boring has a lead, particularly for long tunnels.

Traveling grate is a widely used process for iron ore pellet production, but the thermal state of pellets in the drying section is still unclear. In this study, the temperature distribution of the drying section was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results indicate there is a coupling effect in the drying section of a traveling grate. Gas with higher temperature in down-draught drying (DDD) transfers heat to the up-draught drying (UDD) through the gap of the insulation board, and the temperature gradient of the pellet bed changes before reaching the insulation board. The characteristics of pellet bed expected to appear in DDD are displayed in UDD in advance. To verify the model, a contrast experiment was conducted.

Without insulation we could not survive on this planet. This may sound like a self-serving statement but it is a fact. The blanket of air which surrounds us is a very effective insulating blanket, allowing some shortwave solar radiation to warm us during the day while retaining the longer infrared radiation at night. Our life on earth is very much dependent on materials performing an insulating function without being thought of as insulation, clothing, fur, window glass, the ice of an igloo etc. The mechanisms of heat transfer involved in these materials are analogous to those involved in engineered insulations - Engineered insulations are designed for maximum effectiveness for given conditions within the applicable retraints. Engineered insulations are very effective! As an illustration let us consider this graph (Figure 1). It represents: 1. The radiative heat transfer between two 1 foot2 (0.0932) radiantly black surfaces, one at 100F (38C) and the other at the temperature indicated on the bottom scale. This does not include the convective and conductive heat flow of the air, both of which are significant but small in comparison. 2. The heat transfer resulting from the placement of 1 inch (25.4 mm) of insulation [10 pcf (160 kg/m3) ceramic fiber] between these two plates.

In 1907, the Oklahoma Portland. Cement Company built a small dry process plant at Ada, Oklahoma, then Indian Territory. This plant was later acquired by the Ideal Cement Company of Denver, Colorado, who in 1918 built a new wet process plant along side the old dry plant. The older plant was later shut down .and eventually razed. In 1955, the Ideal Cement Company decided to increase the production at its Ada, Oklahoma operations. After many studies it was decided to build a complete new plant along side the old, near the site of the original 1907 plant. .The new plant was to have a. production of three million barrels annually while the plant then in. operation had an annual production of two and one quarter million barrels

Tellurium (Te) is a rare metalloid that is predominantly produced from the treatment of anode slimes formed during copper (Cu) electrolytic refining. The US Government lists Te as one of the 50 critical minerals, partly, because of its use in thin-film photovoltaic (PV) technology. Given policy initiatives to increase Te production, it is important to evaluate the life-cycle environmental impacts of Te recovery as a by-product of Cu processing. The literature contains a few specific life cycle assessment (LCA) studies of groups of metals that include Te without proper regard to impacts per life-cycle stage of Te production or the effect of allocation on the results. This study builds an LCA model of the production system of Te from anode slimes treatment to evaluate the effect of allocation on life-cycle impacts. We build life cycle inventories using data from the Ecoinvent v3.7.1 database, literature, and engineering calculations and allocate impacts in proportion to products’ mass and economic value. The results show that economic value-based allocation yields greater impacts than mass-based allocation indicating the significant effect of the allocation approach on life-cycle impact estimates.

5.1-PURPOSE, PROCEDURE, METHODS, MANAGEMENT Exploration can be technologically defined, with regard to the discovery of new mineral deposits, as all the activities and evaluations necessary before an intelligent decision can be made establishing size, initial flowsheet and annual output of new extractive operations. The purpose of mineral exploration is the discovery and acquisition of new mineral deposits amenable to economic extractive operations now or in the future. A prime objective of mineral exploration, however, is to find and acquire a maximum number of such mineral deposits at a minimum cost and within a minimum time. Immediately upon the heels of a successful ''exploration" discovery follow activities called, first, development, then operation. Under U.S. Internal Revenue Code regulations (Secs. 1.615.1 and 1.616.1) in effect at the time of this writing, which state that the "development stage" has been reached when "deposits of ore or other minerals are shown to exist in sufficient quantity and quality to reasonably justify commercial exploitation by the taxpayer," exploration in the technological sense may well continue after a mineral property has entered the "development stage" as defined for tax purposes. In many instances continued exploration, after reaching the tax defined "development stage," has disclosed additional reserves which justify a much larger, more efficient and more profitable operation than that which would constitute the minimum feasible. Even after a mine goes into production, continued ore search generally will increase the reserves, either justifying expansions in plant capacity or prolonging the life of the operation, but this work (actually "exploration") is normally considered, for bookkeeping and tax purposes, a part of mine development. Each exploration entity defines its own objectives in terms of acceptable mini- mum rate of return on investment for any deposit found and retained, and in terms of which commodities, and markets, are to be involved. For these reasons, exploration programs, and aims, will vary over a wide range, although all have the common objective of endeavouring to create new profit centers for the future. 5.1.2-EXPLORATION METHODS Exploration has evolved in the past several decades into a highly sophisticated and expensive endeavor in which large corporate entities, or subsidaries, normally are directed and staffed by highly trained exploration specialists. In some instances consultants, with expertise in a given field, are utilized to the benefit of such corporate groups. The "grasshopper" approach to exploration-searching only for outcropping minerals and/or investigating only mineral prospects offered by the discoverers of such outcrops has given us most of the past and present mines in the US., but this method is rapidly approaching the point of diminishing returns in areas that have been thoroughly prospected for currently marketable commodities. An investigation into the source mechanism of mining-induced seismic activity plays a vital role in understanding the various modes of failure observed in the underground deep-level South African mining environment. The seismic events data for this study was captured by the mine-wide seismic system operating at Kloof Gold Mine. This system comprises 40 4.5 Hz tri-axial geophones sampling at 6 kHz installed at locations that surround the stopes mining the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR), Main Reef (MR) and Kloof Reef (KR). A set of 103,753 mining-related seismic events (-3.0≤ ML ≤2.7) that occurred during 2017 and 2018 was selected for this study. The mining depth of these seismic events ranges from 1600 – 4200 m; most located close to stopes mining the VCR ore body. The main criteria used to select a subset of events for detailed analysis were the number of stations that recorded the seismic event and the azimuthal distribution of the sensors.
