Research objectives included 1) determine relationships if any between spectral response of soil and soil textural groups, Unified Soil Classification subgroups and selected landforms and 2) develop computer assisted techniques for engineering soils mapping of remotely sensed data. The sire in northeastern Kansas, 1.6 Km by 43 Km (1.0 mi by 27 mi), contained glacial and alluvial soils. Multispectral scanner data (0.40 to 1.80 pm) collected at 915 meters altitude (3,000 feet) were analyzed using two distinct computer techniques: the nonsupervised approach involving delineation of soil training areas directly by computer and the supervised approach entailing training area selection manually by the researcher. Computer classification of surface materials follows both methods. Non supervised analysis results failed to show a consistant relation- ship between landform type and soil spectral class. Landforms correlating well displayed either unusually bright or unusually dark spectral signatures. Supervised analysis results showed a strong relationship between soil texture and soil spectral class. A moderately strong tie was shown between engineering soils groups (ML, CL, CH and OH) and their respective spectral classes, and a weak association between landform type and soil spectral class. An analysis procedure for engineering soils mapping by computer of remotely sensed data was developed. 1. Locate cultural features by visual examination of imagery. 2. Produce generalized bare soil-vegetation- water map using nonsupervised technique. 3. Outline significant soil fields for computer training using supervised approach. 4. Computer-classify entire area based on these soil fields.

[The Yarnell gold deposit in the Weaver mining district, Yavapai County, Arizona, occurs in a structurally controlled, hydrothermally altered zone in a 1700 Ma granodioritic intrusive. Both potassic and sericitically altered rocks around and above the low-angle, northeast striking Yarnell fault are known to host economic gold mineralization. A wider envelope of weakly-propylitic altered rock also occurs in this area. During mineralization, strong sericitization accompanied several stages of quartz (±adularia) veining, stockwork formation, localized silicification and potassic replacement, in association with deposition of specularite, pyrite (now oxidized) and gold. The footwall of the fault is also sericitically altered but poorly mineralized. Mineralization along the Yarnell fault continues both northeast and southwest from the main deposit, although the thickness of the zone and associated alter avian envelope diminish away from the orebody A sample of undo formed illite taken from the Yarnell fault zone was K/Ar dated at 69 + 1.6 Ma. This date reflects a minimum age for both mineralization and latest movement on the fault. Gold mineralization is accompanied by modest increases in Ag, As. Cu and Mo content. Both CO2- and H2O- rich fluid inclusions were studied and suggest mesothermal pressures and temperatures of formation for the deposit. Ninety-six reverse circulation holes and four diamond drill holes outline a bulk-minable mineral reserve of'4.1 million tons at 0.051 oz of Au per ton. An additional 2.7 million tons at 0.017 oz of Au per ton occurs in a low-grade zone above and subparallel to the main mineralized zone. Total calculated mineral inventory stands at 6.8 million tons at a grade of 0.038 oz of Au per ton, with a waste-to-ore ratio of 1.45:1. Column leach tests indicate that cyanide heap leach gold recoveries should exceed 70%.]

Twin roll sizers are neither compactly designed machines nor are they configured to accommodate underground mobility; in fact, twin roll sizers leave room for improvement in many aspects of the design. The DRC1200 capitalizes on the weaknesses of these machines to make a more productive, easily maintained, and compact twin roll sizer than current market offerings. These strides were made through the inception of the Hard Rock Extraction System (HRXS), which requires a mobile sizer as part of the system. After use of a third party sizer on the HRXS, potential improvements were evident. These improvements include improved structural design to reduce overall footprint and an optimized design to reduce operating cost.

"Canopy air curtains (CAC) on roof bolting machines have been proven, through laboratory and field investigations, to protect miners from respirable dust, preventing dust overexposures. Another desired application is to develop a CAC that is mounted in the compartment of a shuttle car to protect the operator from dust. The challenges faced with this design include mine ventilation rates in tandem with the shuttle car tram speeds, causing cab airspeeds that may exceed 600 fpm, as found in this study of a central Appalachian underground coal mine. Prior research and laboratory testing indicate that successfully protecting a miner in high air velocities is difficult to achieve because the clean air from the CAC is unable to penetrate through the high velocity mine air and make it to the breathing zone of the operator. During this investigation by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), dust concentrations of the shuttle car operator were measured. Also, air velocities experienced by the operator were measured using a recording vane anemometer. Results from the survey indicate that the highest exposure to respirable dust (2.22 mg/m3) occurred when the shuttle car was loading at the continuous miner, where there was an average airspeed of 157 fpm. While tramming, the operator was exposed to 0.77 mg/m3 of respirable dust with an average airspeed of 203 fpm. This study indicates that a CAC system can be designed to greatly reduce an operator’s exposure to respirable dust by providing clean air to the operator, since the majority of the operator’s dust exposure occurs in air velocities less than 200 fpm. INTRODUCTION NIOSH has issued a contract (#200-2015-63485) with Marshall University and J.H. Fletcher & Co. (Salem et al., 2016) to develop a canopy air curtain (CAC) for coal mine shuttle cars. The proposed design maintains a similar design to the roof bolter CAC by providing filtered air via a blower over the operator. The plenum, which will provide the uniform airflow over the operator, is anticipated to be built into the shuttle car canopy. One of the main interferences with a CAC is ventilation airflow perpendicular to the plenum airflow [Engel et al. 1987]. This ventilation airflow, if the velocity is significantly high, can shear the downward flow from the plenum. The shear caused by the ventilating airflow can reduce the effectiveness of the CAC by either disrupting the downward flow or allowing contaminated mine air into the CAC zone of protection."

Sodium is a silver-colored metal that is so unstable that it reacts violently in the presence of water, and chlorine is a greenish-colored gas that is dangerous and lethal. Yet the combination of these two elements forms sodium chloride, commonly known as salt, which is a white-colored compound essential to life itself. Salt is perhaps the only mineral in the world that is used virtually by every human being in every country. Although its importance has diminished over time, salt has had a profound influence on history. Sources of salt have determined the location of cities, such as Salzburg, Austria, Salzgitter, Germany, Salt Lake City, UT, and Saltville, VA. Populations have migrated in search of salt, and wars have been fought to obtain or to protect it. Although there is no written record of when prehistoric man first discovered salt, he probably instantly appreciated its unique and distinctive taste and sought more of it. He noticed animals were attracted to salt springs and salt licks, where they satisfied their innate cravings. Man used this knowledge to hunt for food; where he found the salt, he would find the animals. Because prehistoric man was not aware of his physiologic need for salt, he automatically received his salt requirements from the meat of the animals he ate. A Mesopotamian tale tells of a wounded pig that ran into the ocean and drowned. After being recovered from the ocean, where it was saturated in the salt brine, the pork was found to taste better than unsalted meat. It was not until man graduated from a nomadic to an agricultural society when he introduced vegetables and cereals into his diet that he realized he needed additional supplements of salt. The Sumerians ate salted meat and used salt to preserve food about 3500 BC. In approximately 1000 BC, the Trojans learned to use salt for preserving fish. The maritime civilizations, such as that of the Phoenicians, engaged in an extensive salt trade throughout the Mediterranean. Many superstitions, customs, and traditions surround the religious, social, economic, and political aspects of civilization. Although some commodities have provided the basis of some ageless metaphors and cliches (i.e., heart of gold, strong as steel, etc.), none are more commonly used than those pertaining to salt. Being "the salt of the earth" referred to a person's worthiness, as referenced in Matthew 5:13 of the Bible. Someone "not worth his salt" reportedly was used in ancient Greece in bartering salt for slaves. When a laborer was worth his salt, he was paid a salary (sal is Latin for salt), a term still in use today that dates back to Roman times when part of a soldier's pay was salt rations. Fearing those around him, the Roman leader Pompey was known to add a grain of salt to his drinks as a supposed antidote to poison. Hence, "taking it with a grain of salt'' is to regard something with suspicion. The earliest known record of salt production was in China about 2000 BC when Emperor Yu decreed that salt had to be supplied to the court as a tribute. Because salt was a commodity that had universal demand, governments often intervened to control salt production and distribution to generate revenue for major national projects. State-run salt monopolies were common in history, such as in Rome about 506 BC. Revenue was also derived from taxes levied on salt sales. The word gabelle refers to the direct salt tax used in France. This tax was so despised that it was a major cause of the French Revolution. Although the tax was repealed in 1790, it was reinstated in 1805 to raise revenue for war. France continued to used the gabelle until 1945. Salt making was an important economic activity in many areas of the world. Archaeological evidence indicates that salt was quarried from hills near the Dead Sea before the Bronze Age. At Hallstatt in the eastern Alps of Austria, rock salt was mined as early as 1400 BC. Solar salt was being produced in the northern Yucatan peninsula by the Mayan civilization from about 50 BC to AD 300. Other than the prehistoric use of salt in the southwestern part of the United States by the Native Americans, the first production of salt by American colonists began in June 1614 on Smith's Island, VA, seven years after the founding of the Jamestown colony. The short-lived activity was in response to the high price of salt being charged by ship's captains who brought salt over as ballast from England. Although Nathaniel Loomis is credited with starting the first commercial inland salt production in the United States at Onondaga Lake in New York in 1790, salt had been made by individuals for private use years earlier. Indians had long known of the salt springs in the Kanawha Valley of Virginia (now known as West Virginia). In 1755, Mary Ingles, a white settler, was kidnapped by Indians and was forced to make salt from the saline springs. After her escape, she told other settlers how to make salt. At Saltville, VA, Arthur Campbell began making salt in 1782 by boiling brine obtained from salt springs. In 1799, William King sank a shaft about 3 m in diameter down about 61 m to the underlying Saltville salt deposits. The shaft flooded before he could extract any rock salt; however, King has the distinction of digging the shaft of the first salt mine in the United States. Fig. 1 shows the King site as it appears today in Saltville, VA. Production of brine from the shaft continued until 1892. Settlers moved into the Kanawha Valley in 1785, but it wasn't until 1806 that Elisha Brooks established the first commercial salt works in Kanawha.

"SUMMARY Every tunnel designer has to consider the power of water ingress when designing a new tunnel. Either you choose solutions with simple methods to divert the ingress water or a robust system with the intention that it will give gain on low maintenance costs and a long lifetime. This article describes a new method to divert ingress water in a robust way and more economical than traditional concrete lined tunnels. This system is based on a bolt grid suspending a water tight membrane, which is reinforced and covered with sprayed concrete. The method has been in limited use in Sweden since 2005 and with continuous improvement, still going on, it is now applied for the large project “Stockholm Bypass”, a 21km long highway project. TUNNEL MAINTENANCE RELATED TO WATER INGRESS The Swedish Transport Administration maintain approximately 190 various tunnels that is constructed by a number of different methods, (Swedish Transport Adm 2015). Commonly the ground conditions are good and fairly low ground support is needed. Contrary water and winter conditions can be sever, which gives high impact onto the tunnel design and in particular methods to protect against “frost and water ingress”. During a tunnels lifetime it is common that maintenance related to water ingress occurs several times and sometimes frequent occasions every year. Such maintenance costs and consequences of lost open time for the tunnel can rapidly become higher than the initial cost of the tunnel. Thereby it is obvious that spending time during design to evaluate requirements for a suitable system against water ingress is preferred. Icicles Icicles are formed when water is below freezing degrees and drips or run from an ingress point. At very cold conditions also water flows running at high velocity freeze into ice and a rapid growth can appear. If the integrity of the tunnel traffic area is interfered by icicles they urgently have to be removed before they cause an accident. Typically the tunnel or a part of the tunnel must be closed to do such maintenance. TUNNELS FROST AND WATER INGRESS PROTECTION IN SWEDEN In Sweden methods to perform “frost and water ingress protection” are primary developed for drill and blast tunnels as it is most common tunneling method. The foundation Swedish Rock Engineering Research has done a comprehensive report SveBeFo Rapport 77 that describes water and frost prevention in Swedish tunnels up to year 2005. Below is only slight description of those various methods. Lately some more attention is paid to concrete lined tunnels made by TBM since TBMs successfully built water tight tunnels in City Tunnel (Malmö) and Hallandsås Project. When environmental demands require maintained ground water levels, water tight tunnels made by pressurized concrete lining becomes more economical and on the same time also becomes protected from icicles and water drips."

On Nov. 4, 1981 A/S Sydvaranger's 1-kt/h (1,100-stph) wet-process, iron ore ball mill completed its first four months of uninterrupted, full-load operation in Kirkenes, Norway. This 6.5-m-diam (21-ft-diam) mill is driven by a gearless ring or wraparound 8.1-MW (10,860-hp) motor at 13.1 rpm-a first of a kind in this segment of industry. This article examines reasons for selecting this type of drive over more conventional schemes, lists specific advantages of such large mills, and describes the installation in Norway. History For almost a decade, good operating experiences have been gained with 28 gearless ring motor drives in the cement industry, driving 2.5 to 4-m-diam (8.2 to 13-ft-diam) tube mills with drive powers ranging from about 3-4 MW (4,000 - 8,000 hp). Why then did the mineral ore processing industry hesitate until 1980 to adopt this successful concept for similar applications on ball, semiautogenous, and autogenous mills? There are a number of good reasons in the eyes of conservative mill builders and operators, the most commonly cited ones are: • No operating experience in this segment of specialized industry. • More severe environmental conditions in the wet ore grinding process. • An indifferent attitude of mill builders and electric motor manufacturers towards new drive technologies. • Limited confidence in solid-state power supply systems, such as frequency converters of the required size. There have been and still are numerous problems associated with low-speed geared mill drives of any kind, especially with individual motor/gear sizes approaching or exceeding about 4 MW (5,360 hp). Every mill builder knows about them, but operators learn to accept them as inevitable. The Decision to Change Three things combined to break this technological stalemate: the courage and progressive spirit of one major iron ore processor in Scandinavia, the cooperation of three experienced manufacturers, and an unusual application problem that could not be solved by any conventional approach. The last factor was surely the decisive one, but the first one does not come as a surprise either. The Swedes near Kiruna and the Norwegians around Kirkenes are experienced ore miners and processors, and much credit goes to them for technological breakthroughs in the industry. At A/S Sydvaranger in Kirkenes, above the Polar circle at about the latitude of Alaska's northern tip, the existing grinding facilities, with a total of 14 100 to 240-t/h (110 to 264-stph) ball mills, can not be expanded. Nevertheless, to increase mill throughput, only installing a larger mill in place of an existing smaller one was a practical alternative. For this replacement, the owners set requirements that seemed impossible to meet: • The old 100-t/h (110-stph) ball mill should be replaced with a new ball mill with 10 times the rated throughput, without significantly impairing the operation of the remaining mills, and without significantly changing the mill building. • The new mill should have a variable-speed drive to ultimately optimize the grinding process by means of a closed-loop process¬computer-controlled grinding cycle, and to minimize the specific energy consumption. • Availability, efficiency, and life expectancy of all new components must be higher than those being replaced. • Inrush-current and harmonic loads on the rather weak electric supply line must be minimized to ensure safe plant operation. All old ball mills at A/S Sydvaranger are the geared type, using single synchronous and wound-rotor, slow-speed motors with ring-and-pinion gears. Operators are familiar with the limitations and problems associated with such drives, and they are aware that the following items become major concerns when drive powers are drastically increased: • Gears are subject to wear and tear, require frequent maintenance, and eventual replacement of major parts. • Gears are sensitive to misalignment, overload, and thermal distortion, limiting their useful life. • On dual or quadruple drives, load-sharing and torque oscillations between motors can be a major reason for concern. • At these speeds, ring-and-pinion gears reach their torque transmission capabilities altogether at around 4 MW (5,360 hp) per motor/pinion. To obtain the desired variable-speed performance of the new drive, the only practical and economical conventional solution would have been a frequency-controlled, low- or medium-speed dual motor drive with about 8 MW (10,720 hp) of power. This, however, was not feasible because of limited floor space. Therefore, bids were solicited for the alternative drive method, the gearless ring motor. General Considerations Why are such large mills considered? After all, one could avoid all the problems by simply staying with smaller mill unit sizes. Under competitive pressures of free markets, however, grinding efficiencies and specific energy consumption become key factors in selecting new equipment. The original patent for the gyratory crusher was granted to Philetus W. Gates in 1881. This first crusher was used by the Buffalo Cement Co. At the time these early gyratory crushers were developed all mining and quarrying, either underground or open pit, was done by hand; tonnages generally were small and product specifications simple and liberal. Likewise plants were small and demands for small product sizes practically nonexistent. In addition to substantial amounts of hand labor, the available material handling equipment was small, simple, and not suited to handling large run of mine ore. Mine can, cable ways, or belt conveyon transporting crushed material to the mill had limited capacity per hour. At the turn of the century the largest Gates crusher, the No. 9, had a receiving opening of 21 x 48 in. with a three-arm spider and a 21 x 80-in. opening with a two-arm spider. The steam shovel began to change the entire picture of open pit quarrying. As a result of the use of steam shovels around 1910 crushers with 48-in. receiving openings were built; thus it can be seen that the basic gyratory crusher was developed prior to World War I. The improvement of the internal combustion engine and the use of pneumatic tires created a new set of operating conditions. Early mines were small, using shrinkage stoping and small mine can. The capacity of material handling was small, limiting the size of the largest piece and the feed rate. Improved material handling resulted in more and more large open pit mines with large shovels and a tremendous increase in the size of off road or mine haul trucks or rail can. Primary gyratory crushers also increased with receiving openings as large as 60 in. and connected hp of 1,000.

The “Functional Performance Equation for Ball Milling” was first presented in 1988. It now has been used successfully in more than a dozen mineral processing plants. This powerful, yet simple tool provides a new level of understanding of closed circuit grinding. It shows how grinding circuit efficiency is in reality comprised of two distinct efficiencies. It demonstrates how circuit production rate is related, collectively, to these two efficiencies, mill energy input, and the grindability of the ore. It links circuit performance to design and operating variables that can be manipulated, and creates an effective strategy for making plant improvements. This paper covers the derivation and industrial validation of this equation. As part of an engineering and management system that also incorporates suitable metrics and process control, other operators can now use this tool to make improvements and to manage the performance of their grinding operations with clarity and confidence.

Water is increasingly recognized as a critical issue for sustainable development, becoming as important as carbon to corporate responsibility and reputation. Although the cement industry’s overall ‘water footprint’ is relatively small compared to other sectors, the Cement Sustainability Initiative of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD/CSI) has recognized the importance of water and the need to take actions towards efficient water management, with developing standardizing practices and employing a risk-based assessment approach, mostly at local level where individual facilities and activities can have implications for other water users in the area. Sharrcem, a member of the Titan Cement Group, has made significant investments to upgrade its production facilities, the technological process and apply environmentally friendly technologies. Under this frame, Sharrcem implemented a project for the construction of a Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) in the Cement Plant facilities, which has been successfully operating since early 2016. This paper discusses the technology applied at the new WWTP and the results achieved already, with significant improvement in the quality of the treated water, as compared to the previous situation where untreated wastewater was directly discharged to the nearby Dimce Stream. The WWTP project is a major investment of Sharrcem that aims to improve the quality of the discharged water effluents and thus prevent potential river pollution and overall protect the environment and the health of Sharrcem employees and local community. The WWTP operates with the Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBR) technology, is fully automated and has been also connected with few households of the neighboring community to treat also their sewage water. The plant can be expanded in the future – to connect with additional households - without increasing the size of the treatment tanks. One of the benefits of this project is that by removing a variety of contaminants from water it becomes usable again, depending on the nature of the contaminants and the end use of the water treated. According to the monitoring results the treated water that comes out of the WWTP fully meets quality requirements according to the EU and local limit values standards

During recent years, there have been frequent investigations on the geochemistry of biotite. This work has emphasized, and no doubt was prompted by, factors related to mineral exploration, particularly for those deposits of the porphyry copper type. A large number of papers have been devoted to the obtainment of trace-element data from plutonic biotite. These data have been used to extract primary geochemical information pertaining to the parent magna and the hydro-thermal system which together give rise to porphyry copper deposits. In two early works, Putman and Burnham (1963) and Parry and Nackowski (1963) analyzed base metal contents of ferromagnesium minerals, primarily biotite, from various barrenfmineralized plutons of the Basin and Range Province. One similar conclusion from the two studies was that the Cu, Zn, and Pb contents of magmatic biotite served as indicators of ore development within the granitic rocks genetically related to ore. This theme was then pursued vigorously by a number of authors until the present time. Results, however, have been contradictory, as reviewed by Coope (1974). For example, studies by A1 Hashimi and Brownlow (1970), Lovering et a1 (1970), Putman (1972), and Graybeal (1973) continued to support positive primary relationships between the trace-metal content (usually copper) of biotite and associated sulfide mineralization. By studying biotite in close spatial association will sulfide occurrences, Putman (1972) and Graybeal (1973) developed models for base metal partitioning in magmatic systems based on their discovery of inversely distributed copper between silicate (biotite) and sulfide phases. Conversely, research by Bradshaw (1967) and Blaxland (1971) plus the recent findings of Parry and Jacobs (1975) and Kesler et a1 (1975) found little if any evidence to support a correlation of biotite base-metal or

The major problems are identified the high phosphorus content and the fine dissemination or encapsulation of mineral impurities, in, ,the iron bearing minerals, A process which combined extreme fine grinding techniques with magnetizing roasting or flotation separation methods, is suggested. By these methods concentrates assaying 60-61 percent Fe exceeding the widely accepted upper limit of 56 percent Fe set for these ores, were produced with 75-90 percent iron recovery. Moreover it was shown that the phosphorus content of these concentrates could be reduced from 0.25 to 0.03 percent phosphorus by acid leaching. A brief discussion on production costs based on current and future developments in iron ore processing is given.

Most recent work in the field of mine production scheduling has focused on either the computerization of the traditional methods or the development of sophisticated mathematical optimization models. Yet it is clear to all concerned that the optimizers need to be made more practical and the traditional approach needs to be made more optimal. This paper, along with another recent paper (Gershon, 85) open a middle ground between these two approaches. In that recent paper, a heuristic procedure for production scheduling was introduced. Here, a series of short term optimizations are used in a creative manner to approximate the true long term optimization. Since these small optimizations are aimed at blending to meet production quality specifications, this approach is most applicable to commodities where the blending function is very important such as coal, cement, phosphates or iron, to name a few. The traditional and the optimization approaches are so far apart that their' advocates have difficulty identifying with the other approach. This is especially true concerning the difficulty of understanding the optimization models for those not trained in the field of operations research. This paper takes the position that the pro- 120 per role of the operations researcher is to provide not only useful and advantageous approaches, but practical, understandable and implementable ones as well. This is the goal of the paper in describing a new approach, consistent with the traditional methods and aimed at approximating the results of the optimizers.

Many cases of derailments, train accidents and traffic interruptions due to the slope failure and rockfall have been reported in the past on Konkan Railway trackline because of unstable rock slopes. The authorities installed stability enhancement measures such as wire netting, rock bolting and shotcreting which were found insufficient. The failed geotechnical measures prompted authorities to excavate the unstable slopes. Rock blasting is generally not preferred for the excavation of slopes along the transportation route. Stabilisation and widening of slopes by blasting need closure of the route for a considerable time. Discontinuing traffic on Konkan Railway route was undesirable as it connects two important port cities Mumbai and Mangalore. The paper presents an innovative directional controlled blasting (DCB) technique for excavating three unstable slopes (i.e. cuttings) in hilly terrain without disturbing the traffic. New empirical formulae for small geometry blasting to estimate burden and throw have been developed. A unique sequence of firing and excavation with powder factor varying between 0.04 and 0.39 kg/m3 irrespective of the actual free face was used for rock blasting. The process controlled the throw of blasted material over the track and resulted in a smooth and stable wall. The slope angle has been changed from 80 to 82° to 45–47° and probability of wedge, planar and toppling failures was eliminated. About 100 such accident-prone slopes (52 km cumulative length, 7% of total route) situated at discrete locations along Konkan Railway route were stabilised using the technique. No incident of rockfall and slope failures along these slopes has been observed after the stabilisation.

A decanter centrifuge of novel design was developed for the dewatering of fine-solids slurries having micrometer-range particles that form pastelike, flowable, hard-to-dewater cakes. The design combines a compound beach with a cake flow control structure that allows expressed liquid, from the cake in the dry beach region to be returned to the liquid pool while maintaining a high-solids throughput. To provide optimal performance with various operating parameters (i.e., feed rate, centrifugal gravity, pool, differential speed, concentration of feed solids and slurry type), the cake flow control is adjustable. The second part of the beach is preferably at a zero angle. Tests showed that the new design allows increases in solids dryness and solids throughput. Electric power generation remains the greatest market for coal in the United States. In 1967, about 272 million tons of coal, amounting to over 51 percent of total coal consumption, were burned to satisfy this nation's hugh demand for power. The size of the utility market is currently five times that of 1941 and continues to grow with the demand for more and more energy. A major reason for this strong market has been the ability of the coal industry to supply a superior product for combustion while maintaining competitive prices. Now that the coal industry is engaged in intensive competition with nuclear power for future energy demand, it becomes ever more imperative that superior coal products are produced. One important problem when burning some coals is a liquid phase corrosive attack on boiler tube metal in the superheater and reheater areas of the furnace where steam temperatures may exceed 1050°F.

"Automated Mineralogy (AM) is an important diagnostic tool in flotation plants as it adds ore and particle mineralogical properties to traditional mass and chemical data. AM is used in project development, for future ore studies and for diagnosing concentrator operations. With the exception of operations who own central laboratory or on-site systems, the use of AM is often limited to the analysis of a comparatively small set of samples. Metrix Plant Technologies has partnered with TESCAN to integrate TIMA AM technology into the implementation of Performance Assessment Campaigns (PAC). Routine daily composite samples from the mill are analysed mineralogically on a size-by-size basis over several weeks. All the relevant metallurgical, process control and mineralogical data is combined into a single large database for mass balancing and interactive examination. This paper describes the implementation and results of a PAC at the Agnico Eagle Kittilä gold mine in Finland. Although challenging, the addition of mineralogical data as dependent variables in multivariate analysis leads to a much deeper understanding of the root cause effect of events driving the flotation performance. INTRODUCTION TO STUDY The Kittilä mine, owned by Agnico Eagle, is Europe’s largest primary gold mine, with annual production of approximately 180,000 Oz. The operation is located in Lapland in northern Finland, and is currently expected to operate until 2035. The location of the operation is shown in Figure 1. Historically, the mine was an open pit, although in recent years ore is sourced solely from underground operations. The processing plant features crushing and grinding, followed by carbon flotation and sulphide flotation. Carbon concentrate is a waste stream, and sulphide concentrate reports to pressure oxidation (autoclave) and CIL circuits for gold extraction. The final flowsheet is shown in Figure 2. Following commissioning in late 2008, the operation achieved commercial production on May 1st 2009. Gold recovery in flotation gradually increased to a 92-96% range at a throughput of ~3500-4000 tonnes per day. In late 2014, the operation commissioned a plant expansion to ~5000 tonnes per day. Following a commissioning period, the operation stabilised with recoveries in a 90-94% range, which over any given period was determined to be ~2% lower with statistical significance. The trends from start-up of gold recovery in flotation and throughput are shown as follows in Figure 3. In early 2016, Agnico Eagle Kittilä mine, along with Agnico Eagle Technical Services (AETS) partnered with Metrix Plant Technologies and TESCAN, to perform a Performance Assessment Campaign (PAC) at Kittilä, involving automated mineralogy on five key streams at Kittilä on 40 days selected from a 50 day period between February 15th and April 4th 2016, when plant operations were stable. In addition to the mineralogical data, metallurgical and operational data were pooled into a single, powerful database to explore opportunities for the operation to improve recovery in a sustained manner, ideally to the levels pre-expansion."

JAMES DONALD FORRESTER 32.1-EXAMINATIONS The field examination of a mineral deposit or mining enterprise requires a comprehensive effort to determine all natural and man-made factors bearing upon the problem to be resolved by the investigation. Therefore, the purpose to be served by an examination must be fully understood before the engineer assumes responsibility, and before actual field work starts. A clear understanding facilitates planning the approach to the project for maximum efficiency and thorough acquisition of information. It follows, of course, that the engineer has the necessary knowledge and experience to discharge satisfactorily the professional obligations attending the project. Some studies are in herently more complex than others, and the requirements of the problem are not always the same. Some examinations require the detailed investigation of large operating or nonoperating mines or, possibly, of mining districts; others involve more or less reconnaissance studies; and still others rela¬tively small undeveloped mineral occurrences. Likewise, the primary objective of some analyses may be the evaluation of a mineral deposit or a mining property, whereas in other projects the major objective may be guiding mining or drilling work in the discovery of new or hidden ore bodies and mineral-bearing structures. Thus, the possible range of any given examination may extend in varying degree through one, or more, of the following types of procedures: 32.1.1--GEOGRAPHIC ENVIRONMENT Studies of geographic environment should be made to ascertain the general physical situation in the area under consideration and to identify those correlative factors hearing on the, findings resulting from the field examination. This commonly will include determinations of: A. Location of the field area with respect to the state and county in which it occurs and, if feasible, a record of the township, range and section with reference to the principal meridian, and base line (or lines) that apply. For examinations in foreign countries, or in regions outside the continental United States, it is desirable that the field locality, in each instance, be identified with reference to the boundaries of some form of political entity essentially comparable in character to the divisions used in the United States. B. Distances from existing communities and related service centers, via: 1. Roads, both improved and unimproved. 2. Railroads. 3. Navigable waterways. 4. Airports. C. Topographic relief as it will influence the selection of 1. Pit site or positions of underground mine portals or shaft sites, including dump areas. 2. Mill site, including tailings disposal area.

Cement industry relies heavily on the control of large volume of raw materials in the proximity of plant operations for clinker and cement manufacturing. These mineral resources are perhaps considered as ?low-profile? (mostly comprise limestone's, clays, marls and sands), but their availability, accessibility and suitability ? the later with respect to chemistry, mineralogical and physical characters ? are factors of paramount importance and may largely affect production cost and plant productivity. The combination of scarcity of good quality raw materials deposits and the growing environmental concerns have challenged the cement producers towards sustainability and the responsible exploitation of natural resources. In open pit mining and quarrying, the evaluation of mineral resources vs. handling of the non-usable overburden and other off-spec materials directly affects the medium to long-term production planning, quality control practices and environmental management. It is a general trend for many cement producers and a usual case for a number of Titan Cement plants worldwide, that redesign of quarry pits is necessary not only for stability purposes but also as a result of environmental constraints and emerging issues. The material reserves then have to be re-evaluated in the light of the new final pit design, safety distances from houses, other infrastructure and Law restrictions and according to criteria of safety of operations, reduction of environmental impacts, pit optimisation and proper future reclamation. The paper discusses the case of three active quarries of Usje Cement Plant, in Skopje (Macedonia), namely Usje (marl), Goverlevo (lime-stone) and Ljubosh (sand), where a large campaign of redesign and evaluation of recoverable reserves and the needs in rehabilitation took place in 2004. Technical and environmental issues and criteria are presented in the form of master plans and the highlights of the first attempts to propose and apply a reclamation scheme are discussed, by also examining alternative solutions for each quarry area. Finally, the 2005 progress in applying changes to the design of benches and pit layout, as well as experiences gained, are discussed.

When the Trelleborg Divisions of Boliden Allis and MPSI merged, a unique opportunity occurred for two independent mill fabricators to compare various design procedures and the research upon which they were based. This paper documents such a comparison in the structural design area. Several SAG mill analyses are compared using both Boliden Allis and MPSI methods. The differences and similarities are then utilized in a correlation of critical stress definitions and the acceptable design and inspection criteria.
