"In response to a severe regional drought and in preparation for the further decline of water levels in Southern Nevada’s Lake Mead, the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) built a new intake system to ensure water supply to Las Vegas and its surrounding communities. In 2015, design began on the Low Lake Level Pumping Station (L3PS) that will move the water from this lower intake, ensuring operability of the water delivery system despite these declining lake levels. The L3PS Project includes a 159-meter-deep shaft, a large underground chamber, and 34-each 152-meter-deep, 2.4-meter-diameter drilled well shafts to be constructed in highly faulted and fractured ground. The Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) delivery method was chosen to facilitate early contractor involvement in the design process to address the significant challenges and risks anticipated on this US$650 million Project. This paper describes the CMAR selection process; the CMAR involvement during design and benefits resulting from that involvement; and the unique collaborative effort among the owner, engineer, program manager and CMAR used to evaluate and select the best design approach, preferred underground construction methods, and coordinated geotechnical baseline report. PROJECT BACKGROUND AND NEED Seven of the United States’ western states rely heavily on the Colorado River and its tributaries for their water supply. The primary source of water for the Colorado River is winter snow that falls in the mountains ringing the Colorado River Basin. Flows in the Colorado River vary significantly from year to year, depending on the amount of snow and rain deposited in the basin. Beginning in the year 2000 and continuing to the present, snowfall has been well below documented historical averages and Colorado River flows have diminished."

This article presents a novel design, called the Climax High Capacity Processor (HCP), for pre-combustion cleaning of coal. This design is particularly suitable for the plant capacities of 400 -660 TPH. The HCP is different from the conventional designs with an equivalent throughput in three major aspects: 1) the use of one large capacity HM cyclone to separate coarse and intermediate raw coal in a single circuit; 2) the elimination of the conventional secondary magnetics recovery system by use of the high efficiency Climax magnetic separators; 3) the use of "single line" piping with a minimum requirement of ancillary devices. In comparison with conventional designs with similar capacity, the HCP plant costs much less in capital investment, operation and maintenance.

On the territory of Macedonia in South Yugoslavia primary and dory gold occurences were known since ancient times. Remnants of numerous goafs and remainders of washaries on river terraces and alluviums date right back to the times of Phillip II and his son Alexander of Macedonia and from Roman times, as well as from the Middle Ages witness exploitation of primary and secondary gold. More recent explorations on primary and secondary gold occurrences date from the period between two World Wars. Over that period a number of private companies, each on their own jointly, carried out gold exploration, particularly of alluvial occurrences on rivers emptying into River Vardar, starting from Skopje to the Greek frontier. The latest gold explorations carried out In the alluvium of River Konjska date back in 1976, and in 1978 old terraces of River Konjska were explored. The Visibility Study was prepared on possibilities of exploitation of gold from River Konjska alluvium. In the paper are collected the basic date an all known primary and secondary occurrences of gold, the results of the latest explorations, and the study itself. To-date geological explorations and analyses show very interesting potentionality of River Konjska and River Vardar alluvium, which proves continuing of he further explorations. For the moment, it is necessary to re-explore more complete view of the deposit. After that it will be possible to make complete techno-economical estimation of the auriferious alluviums and the conditions of the evaluations of the alluvial gold. 1. Rendering a solid hydrophobic and solid-fluid particle* attachment in flotation are recognized as not necessarily related (1,2). The attachment is governed by forces of attraction and repulsion which need to be considered. The induction time required for attachment after solid and fluid particle are brought into proximity (3-8) illustrates the point. Laskowski(8) showed that a reduced induction time favoured flotation but detected no change in contact angle, a standard indication of solid surface hydrophobicity. Induction .time is observed in fluid-fluid particle coalescence, there being called a rest time (9-11) The induction time phenomenon is related to the presence of a metastable liquid film (disjoining film (2)) of the continuous phase (water in flotation) which must thin and rupture to permit attachment. The lifetime of this film, which is governed by the rate of thinning and the probability of rupture with thicknesss, depends on a complex interaction of forces. Investigating these forces should help clarify the attachment process. Practical benefits would be improved understanding of slimes flotation (12,13) This paper is concerned with the role of the mobile fluid particle-water interface on the film lifetime, in particular, the role of time-dependent or dynamic interfacial properties resulting from deformation of this interface.

The ideal entering freshman for the College of Mineral Industries possesses the necessary aptitude to complete successfully a difficult technical curriculum, has a highly developed intellectual curiosity and adequate preparation in basic mathematics, sciences, and English, is enthusiastic about pursuing a career in the mineral industries, and puts forth a good academic effort while attending Penn State. The present programs of the University?s Division of Counseling and the College of Mineral Industries are directed toward providing the College with students who will meet these requirements. At present, freshmen are admitted to the Pennsylvania State University without entrance examination if they are in the upper two-fifths of their high school classes. All Pennsylvania students in the lower three-fifths are required to take the University Aptitude Test and all out-of-state students the College Entrance Board Examinations. Such students are admitted only if they score sufficiently high on either test to indicate the ability to do satisfactorily the work of University students. Only to this extent, are native intelligence and areas of greatest aptitude known for the Freshman prior to admission, and they are, therefore, largely beyond the control of either the Division of Counseling or the College of Mineral Industries. Because all freshmen, with exceptions that are numerically minor, are required to select a curriculum before admission to Penn State, each student who presents himself for required counseling during the summer, prior to his first semester, has already made a choice of his course of study. In many instances, such choices have been made without a rational and serious consideration of the student?s abilities and interests. Through tests given between the date of admission and the date of the counselling interview, it is possible to measure these characteristics and for the Division of Counselling to advise the student of his chances of success in his chosen curriculum. If he is qualified for the curriculum he has selected, Counselling Service goes on to direct the student?s attention to those other curriculums which are in the same general area as the one he has chosen and which will also challenge his abilities and correspond to his interests, Through this counselling, the curriculums of the College of Mineral Industries, which are often less well known to high school students than others for which they are no more qualified by ability or interest, are brought to the attention of the incoming freshman.

For two consecutive years the author and his wife have been fortunate enough to have been invited by the Peoples Republic of China to work with Chinese geologists of the Geological Bureau of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industries (MMI). Our visits, each of which lasted 7-8 weeks, took us to northwestern Sichuan, central Anhui, and much of Hebei Province, as shown in the accompanying drawing. We were asked to evaluate, criticize, and offer suggestions on the exploration and mining techniques used by the Chinese. Our commission both years was centered on gold, although we were also to visit other operations when the opportunity arose. In 1986, the visit primarily concerned with disseminated "Carlin" type gold deposits; in 1987, with "Greenstone" type gold deposits. Gold has been targeted by the Chinese as a metal of importance to the nation. Several governmental agencies have received direction and budgets to seek and develop gold properties. Besides the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, gold is being sought by the Ministry of Geology, the China Gold Corporation, and reportedly the Peoples Army. There is considerable competition among these agencies. It is not uncommon to find two or more agencies working in the same general area. However, communication between the groups is minimal. Last year, we toured a small mine at Bambishan. We could see a diamond drill across the valley. The rig belonged to another Ministry and my guides voiced their curiosity to know what their competitors were finding. Mining, too, is not the monolithic bureaucracy that most Westerners anticipate in China. There are various levels of mining. These differ not only in sophistication, but in ownership. First, for small deposits the state allows "Peoples Mines". These can be owned and worked by individuals. The individual owner-miner may hire relatives or neighbors and give them a wage or he may turn the mine into a joint ownership situation. They

This paper presents the results of test work performed with a Pacific Electric Motors (PEM) high intensity magnetic separator (20 kilogauss) , a unit capable of separating weakly, as well as strongly, magnetic minerals in the particle size range of sands to clays. Tests were performed on some 40 industrial minerals. With some minerals excellent separations were attained and with others intermediate and poor separations were accomplished. This study is a preliminary survey and many of the intermediate and poor results can be improved as separation problems are worked out with additional test work. It is demonstrated that with a number of industrial minerals high intensity magnetic separation is a viable beneficiation technique that is economic ally feasible.

The titanium dioxide pigment industry in the United States has always relied to varying degrees on imported titanium concentrates. Dependence on foreign ilmenite was especially high (generally over 85% of consumption) until 1942, when large-scale U.S. production of ilmenite began, and has since ranged from 12% to 47%. Rutile import reliance was generally in the 45% to 80% range until the early 1960's, when increased use in the chloride pigment process raised dependence on imported rutile to over 90% in most years since 1963. Import reliance of zircon, obtained almost entirely as a byproduct of titanium mineral production, has generally ranged from about 30% to 65% of consumption. This paper will examine the history of U.S. sources of these heavy mineral commodities, and will discuss the potential U.S. future supply in view of changing industrial uses and processes and the anticipated development of new heavy-mineral-sand processing operations, such as those at Richards Bay in the Republic of South Africa and in Sierra Leone.

The recent mine disasters in Australian coal mines have initiated an introduction of Self-Contained Self-Rescuer (SCSR) as component in the development of new escape strategies for miners. These self-contained self-rescuers are closed circuit, demand sensitive breathing apparatus that make oxygen available to the wearer for a nominal period of time. Their operation is completely independent of the surrounding atmosphere. Once properly donned, the SCSR can assist a miner to escape from an area containing smoke, toxic gases or an oxygen deficient atmosphere. The duration of a typical SCSR is usually taken at the point of complete collapse of the breathing bag which is accompanied by an increase in breathing resistance and inhaled levels of carbon dioxide. Because the oxygen consumption (V02) and the heart rate are correlated, a prediction of V02 and consequently the duration of an SCSR can be made by monitoring the heart rate. Thirty-seven volunteers participated in field simulated escape trials at four underground coal mines. The results from the field trials suggested that oxygen consumption depends on the heart rate, the body weight and exercise rating of the miner. All the volunteers were asked to fill out the questionnaires to evaluate the performance of the units. The miners indicated that they could tolerate the inhaled temperature without any difficulty to breathing resistance. A complete statistical analysis of the field results is also presented.

"Since 1984, the date of the first recorded fatality involving a remote controlled continuous mining machine, 38 miners in the United States have been killed when they were struck by a continuous mining machine. Proximity detection is a valuable tool for preventing fatalities, and the use of these systems is expected to significantly improve safety. Proximity detection provides a means to prevent accidents like these. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a series of underground tests to evaluate the accuracy and repeatability of proximity detection systems under a number of conditions such as varying the orientation and height of the personal wearable device (PWD), moving the PWD close to the trailing cable, and activating the machine’s mining mode. At the 2014 SME Annual Meeting, results from tests on first-generation proximity detection systems were presented. This paper will provide results from the similar tests performed with second-generation systems. The results show that performance has improved. For example, the negative impact of PWD orientation and the trailing cable has been reduced. However, some inconsistencies remain. Notably, performance changes dramatically when mining mode is activated. INTRODUCTION Since 1984 there have been 38 fatalities involving striking and pinning of the operator and other workers by the continuous mining machine (CMM) [1]. In August 2011, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) published a proposed regulation that would require proximity detection systems on all continuous mining machines except full-face machines [2]. Proximity detection systems are designed to stop machine motion to protect miners from striking/pinning hazards. Several MSHA-approved proximity detection systems are commercially available. MSHA estimates that of the 38 fatal striking and pinning accidents that have occurred since 1984 involving CMMs, the use of proximity detection could have been a preventative factor in at least 28 cases [1]. Furthermore, MSHA estimates that proximity detection could prevent 20% of all deaths throughout the industry [3]. NIOSH researchers have been involved in the development and testing of proximity detection technology since creating the HASARD system [4] and have recently conducted research intended to develop more advanced proximity detection technology for CMMs [5,6,7,8]. In addition, NIOSH has also conducted research investigating how the signals of a proximity detection system propagate [9,10] and have developed a novel method for determining the location of a personal wearable device (PWD) relative to the magnetic field generators [11,12]."

It is well known that the anticipated mineral price at the start of a prospective mineral project can have an overwhelming effect on a property's ex ante value. However, possible price movements throughout the life of a project can also have an impact on this value. This paper demonstrates how different potential price paths can affect project value. When considering commodity price projections for mine valuations, it is thus necessary to estimate not only the expected commodity price at the start of the project, but also the manner in which that price is likely to fluctuate throughout the project's life.

The Piedmont province of the southern Appalachians is becoming the focus of interest for many exploration geologists. In the past, only those deposits with significant surface exposure have been exploited. Thus, few deposits have been found and relatively little exploration has been conducted in recent years. Modern geochemical and geophysical techniques can alleviate this problem of concentrating on exposed ore bodies by allowing us to "look through" the soil and saprolite to detect the presence of significant mineralization at depth. This paper will attempt to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of several geo¬chemical exploration techniques in the Piedmont, of Cabarrus and Stanly Counties, North Carolina. The area chosen for the study is shown in Figure 1, lying almost wholly within the Mt. Pleasant quadrangle, North Carolina. The area is on the eastern boundary between the Charlotte belt, a zone of plutonic and intermediate grade metamorphic rocks, and the Carolina Slate belt, a series of complexly interbedded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of predominantly low grade metamorphism. The area is now considered to be a 500 million year old active, continental margin.1 As is typical of most of the piedmont, outcrop is sparse. Figure 2 is a sketch map of the general geology of the area under study, showing the Charlotte belt rocks in the northwestern quadrant and slate belt rocks, to the east. Within the area are a number of old mines and prospects, the most famous of which are the Furniss and the Phoenix mines in Cabarrus County. All are reported to have contained Au and Cu. Ag and Pb were reported from some. A summary of the deposits is given in Table 1. Data used in this study are from three Master's theses conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 3,3,6 In separate studies, well waters5, B-zone soils3, and vein and float quartz6 from the area described were sampled and analyzed. Each study concluded separately that geochemical anomalies in the vicinity of the ores justify use of that specific sample type in a geo-chemical exploration program. "Wear of TBM tools significantly affects tunneling advance rates. Wear-prediction models are based (amongst others) on the abrasivity of the present geology, which is determined via laboratory tests. To evaluate the results from such tests in context, this work considers the tribological system TBM tool from a materials technology perspective. In so doing, the microstructures of different application-oriented materials are presented and discussed in terms of their wear behavior and wear resistance. The significant influence of tool materials on the abrasivity of the geology and thus wear prediction models has already be identified. LCPC, Cerchar and nano-scratch experiments have been performed as confirmation. Material-dependent wear mechanisms and their correlation in terms of tunneling have shown that it is mandatory to consider the complete tribological system to estimate the wear of TBM tools. 1 INTRODUCTION Mechanized tunneling is vital to ensure necessary infrastructure development in megacities like Tokyo (Bay Tunnel), Istanbul (Eurasia Tunnel) and Mexico City (Tunnel Emisor Oriente). The use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) has been established for many years. In contrast to other methods such as boring and blasting or excavation using dredgers, tunneling with TBMs allows simultaneous excavation and removal of both the mineral and tunnel lining by tubbing segments or shotcrete. This makes tunneling more efficient, allowing for faster development of the tunnel in both hard rock and soil [1]. When budgeting such tunneling projects, precise planning and coordination in terms of tunneling technique choice (e.g. EPB or Slurry-shield), the relevant geology, and the associated penetration rates and tool wear are required. In particular, wear to TBM tools has a significant impact on tunneling progress. Due to wear, tools become dulled or lose their functionality because of brittle material behavior, thus reducing penetration rates and therefore tunneling efficiency [1]. As a result, additional tool changes are necessary, leading to higher overall costs due to down times and maintenance costs. Therefore, there is strong interest in a reliable and precise wear prediction model for TBMs. As already mentioned, the geology and associated wear of the tunneling tools define the maintenance times."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu co-deposited. Decreasing Cu co-deposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.7 A?h per 150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 ms. Graphite, lead, and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave e1ectrowinning at 70? C gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10 to 30 pct, and a period of 100 ms to 1,000 ms gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 µ g/mL to 0.1 µ g/mL, Au concentrations decreased from 54 µ g/mL to 0.2 µ g/mL, and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µ g/mL.

Noranda's Grey Eagle Mine and Mill, located in the Siskiyou Mountains of Northern California, began shakedown operations in the late fall and early winter of 1982. This paper describes some of the unique features in mining, milling and water treatment operation at Grey Eagle. In addition, major start-up problems in the mill and water treatment plant are discussed along with measures taken to correct these problems.

Artificial neural networks (ANN) are of growing interest in a wide variety of applications. Pattern recognition, speech processing, financial analysis, signal processing and process control are at present the most successful ones. This paper is an attempt to illustrate the potentiality of ANN applied to mineral processing. An introduction to the technology of ANN is first proposed to describe the various components and to explain the various phases encountered in setting up a network. Then examples are given to illustrate the use of ANN dynamic modelling of mineral processing units or plants and in process control.

This paper presents pit slope monitoring and back-analysis case studies con-ducted to evaluate and, if possible, stabilize slopes at the Berkeley Pit in Butte, MT. Two specific slopes were studied in detail. The first slope was determined to be near limiting equilibrium, as evidenced by its response to the initiation and cessation of mining, while the second failed on three occasions. Back-analysis of the failed slope verified the laboratory-derived geomechanical properties of the earth materials. Early detection of slope movement can show a need to take action, including modifying slope geometry, dewatering if the slope were wet, and/or investigating and implementing artificial supports. Monitoring slope displacements in open-pit mines can supply data for predicting collapses and preventing serious damage, injuries, and/or loss of life.

Case histories of water problems in underground mine shafts and tunnels are outlined to illustrate varying degrees of sophistication in grouting techniques currently applied in such construction. The interception of water underground can be one of prior knowledge, i. e., the site investigation provides necessary data to plan a grouting program prior to construction start, or excavations may encounter "changed conditions" or unplanned water. The latter includes catastrophic inflows and emergency situations where the structural integrity of a building or concrete shaft lining are jeopardized. The presentation of this paper outlines some applications of grouting work in underground mine construction throughout the United States in a variety of geological provinces and for a variety of minerals.

Pneumatic stowing was first introduced in longwall mining in the middle twenties. Since that time it has advanced through many stages of development, particularly abroad, which have greatly improved its efficiency and contributed to its growing use. Pneumatic stowing originated in coal mining but has also been adopted in metal mining. This paper discusses the techniques of pneumatic conveying of. stowing material and equipment and applications of pneumatic stowing.
