Thermal damage is an urgent problem faced by deep mining. High-temperature rock mass, hot water and electromechanical equipment are the sources of the thermal damage. The increase in air temperature in mine tunnel is the result of fluid–solid coupling heat transfer from various heat sources. This paper takes a roadway with hot water and a mine car as the research object. Based on the Fluent, Static Structural and Steady-State Thermal modules in ANSYS, the thermal-fluid–structure coupling analysis in the roadway is carried out. It is found that the hot water has a significant effect on the thermal environment of the mine. Under the experimental parameters, the maximum heat flux density and equivalent elastic strain at the interface between the hot water and the rock are 9789.3 W/m2 and 0.00054532 m/m, respectively. The heat flux distribution in the rock area near the mine car does not change much, and the equivalent elastic strain value in this area is high. After the air is heated in the hot water area, the temperature curve changes gradually and then rises steadily. By changing the inlet air temperature parameter, it is found that the lower the inlet air temperature, the better the cooling effect, and the change of the inlet air temperature can change the air temperature field in the roadway as a whole. By changing the parameter of inlet air speed, it is found that higher wind speed brings better cooling effect, but with the increase in wind speed, the cooling effect of roadway thermal environment is very limited. When the wind speed increases from 5 m/s to 10 m/s, the air temperature of most measuring points drops by more than 2℃; when the wind speed increases from 15 m/s to 20 m/s, the air temperature of most measuring points drops below 0.7℃. After the wind speed reaches a certain value, the cooling effect of ventilation is very limited.

In the hard-rock mining industry, the generation of fines during blasting is an important issue because it has a significant effect on production processes. Although various approaches have been used to estimate fines generation in recent decades, as a practical matter, measuring the amount of fines is nearly impossible given the technical limitations and the scale of mine blasts. In this study, a dynamic PPV damagemodel was developed and applied to predict fines generation as a result of blasting. This modified version of the crushed zone model (CZM) considers dynamic rock properties and peak particle velocity (PPV), which represents the induced stress in blasting. Dynamic rock-fracturing tests were conducted using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) to determine the parameters that represent the relationships between rock strength and strain rate as well as the relationships between fines amount and strain rate in the model. A case study was conducted that entailed determining the radius of the crushed zone for given blast designs and rock properties and then measuring the fines amount within this crushed zone. This case study indicated that the dynamic PPV model can provide a rough estimate of fines generation for given dynamic rock properties and blast design parameters and that this method has the potential to be a useful indicator, or index, of fines generation.

"Underground refuge alternatives require an air source to supply breathable air to the occupants. This requires pressure relief valves to prevent unsafe pressures from building up within the refuge alternative. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandates that pressure relief valves prevent pressure from exceeding 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure when a fan or compressor is used for the air supply. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a variety of pressure relief valves using an instrumented test fixture consisting of data acquisition equipment, a centrifugal blower, ductwork and various sensors to determine if the subject pressure relief valves meet the MSHA requirement. Relief pressures and flow characteristics, including opening pressure and flow rate, were measured for five different pressure relief valves under a variety of conditions. The subject pressure relief valves included two off-theshelf modified check valves, two check valves used in MSHA-approved built-in-place refuge alternatives, and a commercially available valve that was designed for a steel refuge alternative and is currently being used in some built-in-place refuge alternatives. The test results showed relief pressures ranging from 0.20 to 1.53 kPa (0.03 to 0.22 psi) and flow rates up to 19.3 m3/ min (683 scfm). As tested, some of the pressure relief valves did not meet the 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi) relief specification.IntroductionThe Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) was enacted in the United States in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement (U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, MSHA, 2006). Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives for underground coal mines. This mandate culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR) mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency refuge alternatives and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such refuge alternatives can be either self-contained mobile units or built-inplace facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for MSHA approval of refuge alternatives and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the refuge alternatives. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe refuge alternative atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi), or at a pressure above mine atmospheric pressure, in the refuge alternative, as specified by the manufacturer when the breathable air is supplied by a fan or compressor (MSHA, 2008)."

One concern of the Mine Safety and Health Administration is the structural integrity of steel wire ropes used on mine personnel hoists and elevators. Failure of such ropes has resulted in loss of life and property. Although thorough and regular visual examinations are performed, hoist ropes may still fail from undetected internal wear, corrosion, and broken wires. To complement visual examinations, nondestructive rope inspection techniques have been developed to determine deterioration and removal criteria. The techniques use electromagnetic and permanent-magnet test instruments designed by a Canadian firm. This paper describes the operating principles, field and laboratory testing of these nondestructive testing instruments, and discusses the feasibility of using this type of testing as a supplement to visual examination and destructive tests.

"The Sistema de Potabilización Área Norte project (Northern Area Purification System) was a major expansion of the potable water system in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The aim of the project was to transport and purify raw water from the Paraná River to provide potable water for five communities in the northern part of the province, benefitting up to two million people. The project was constructed by a joint venture (JV) of four South American contractors and consisted of the following key components:• Treatment plant: A 16-ha (39-acre) area was cleared for the construction of a treatment plant to purify 900,000 m3/day (1.2 million cu ft/d) of raw water from the Paraná River and distribute it to the surrounding communities.• Bored tunnel: Nearly 15 km (9 miles) of 3.6 m (12 ft) inner diameter tunnel, ranging from 18 to 22 m (59 ft to 72 ft) below grade, was bored with two earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) to draw the raw water from the river. The TBMs started from a central launch shaft and proceeded in opposite directions. Cristina advanced northbound to the Paraná River Intake System, and Liliana advanced southbound to the new treatment plant.• Access and ventilation shafts: Five access shafts and eight ventilation shafts were installed along the length of the tunnel. The access shafts were designed to provide entry points for inspection and maintenance of the final tunnel. The five shafts consisted of one central launch shaft in the middle of the tunnel alignment, one retrieval shaft at each end of the tunnel (intake and treatment plant, respectively) and two intermediate shafts. The intermediate shafts were installed before the TBM passed, with a final liner to be installedafterward."

Upgrading of low-concentration ores is of growing importance today. The Heavy Medium Cyclone Process, thanks to strong centrifugal forces, effectively separates particles varying only slightly in specific gravity but widely in size. The paper discusses the separation efficiency, the method of assessing that efficiency, and the influence of such factors as medium solids. The operating results of nine heavy medium cyclone plants handling following minerals are reported: barite, wolfram, iron, magnesite, diamond, lead-zinc, fluorspar, rocksalt potash. Highlighted are an improved recovery system for heavy medium and some other developments, such as techniques for separation down to 0.1mm and the application in the field of recycling.

Roadheaders are gaining widespread acceptance in North America as a means for mechanical tunnel excavation. Until recently, almost all of the large-scale North American tunnel projects were excavated one of two ways ? the tried and true drill-and-blast method or with the use of tunnel boring machines (TBM), the hi-tech super-excavators. TBMs enjoyed fast-growing popularity worldwide as TBM manufacturers offered greater technology to meet the demand of the civil tunnel industry in the late 20th century. Recently, though, more tunnel projects, large and small, can thank the brute force of a roadheader for getting the job done.

The reliability of a set of flotation results is key to minimizing project risk, either at the commissioning of a concentrator or at the point of implementing an improvement to an existing concentrator operation. High-confidence flotation testing (HCFT) was developed for this purpose and is part of the list of technologies at various scales used by Xstrata Process Support (XPS) in addressing these projects. The methodology is based on two principles: one, to ensure that the ore sample is representative and has been well-blended and subsampled; two, to perform the flotation tests in sufficient numbers of replicates with appropriate quality controls, so as to improve the reproducibility of the test data. Across ten years of research on this methodology at Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, several improvements to the HCFT method and complementary connections between sampling and quantitative mineralogy have been developed. Two case studies are reviewed. These show the capability of this system in both optimizing an existing concentrator operation and in serving a new mine scenario. Introduction Alumina (aluminum oxide) is the material from which all the world's aluminum is produced. In the Western World, all the alumina is made from bauxite by the Bayer process. In the nearly 150 years since aluminum was first isolated by Oersted, the metal has grown from a laboratory curiosity to a position of major importance in the world's commerce. In terms of annual production rates aluminum is first among nonferrous metals. Oersted's discovery-reduction of aluminum chloride with potas¬sium amalgam-was improved on by Ste. Claire Deville, whose so¬dium amalgam reduction of aluminum chloride led to the commercial production of aluminum in France in 1855. Ste. Claire Deville's method prevailed until 1886 when Charles Martin Hall and Paul T. Heroult each invented a process for the production of aluminum by the electrolysis of alumina dissolved in molten cryolite. The inven¬tion by Karl Josef Bayer in 1888 of an economical process for making very pure aluminum oxide (alumina) from bauxite established the necessary link between known ores and the Hall-Heroult reduction process. Bayer's work completed the scientific base-the ore bauxite refined to alumina by the Bayer process (U.S. Patent No. 515,895), the alumina reduced to aluminum in the Hall-Heroult cell (U.S. Patent No. 400,766--upon which today's aluminum industry is founded. Small-scale production of aluminum in the U.S. began in 1888 utilizing the Hall cell. By 1903, bauxite properties and a Bayer process refining step had been incorporated into the production activities. On this base the aluminum industry in the U.S. has grown at an annual compounded rate of 15%. Since 1946 the annual growth rate has been 10%.1 The rapid growth of the industry is the result of many factors among which are the existence of widespread bauxite ore deposits; a sound and economic production technology; and the properties of the metal-lightness, strength, ductility, good electrical and heat con¬ductivity, and pleasing appearance, which lead to ever greater de¬mands for aluminum in an industrializing society. At the inception of the industry, the only market that could be found for aluminum was in the production of cooking utensils. How¬ ever, the rapidly accelerating industrial and technological development of the Western World soon created new needs for aluminum, and today aluminum is marketed in a broad range of industrial, commer¬cial, and consumer applications. The principal uses for aluminum are:' building and construction, 22%; transportation, 18%; electrical, 13%; packaging, 11%; consumer durables, 10%; machinery and equipment, 7%; other, 19%. The 1974 production of primary alumi¬num in the world was 14.5 million short tons, which at an approximate ingot price of 40¢ per lb puts a value of $11.6 billion on the industry product prior to fabrication. While aluminum is widely distributed in the earth's crust and is a major constituent of many rocks and soils, to date no method of extraction of aluminum from such nonbauxite material has been brought to commercial practice in the Western World. In the USSR alumina is produced by the complex processing of nepheline syenite, but elsewhere all commercial production of alumina is from bauxite. A brief discussion of recent developments and other processes for alumina is included in the subsection "Other Processes for Alumina," page 19-15. In early 1973, a major U.S. aluminum producer announced the successful development of processes for the production of aluminum from aluminum chloride. This achievement promises to exert a major influence on the future of the aluminum industry. In the initial com¬mercial application of this new technology, Bayer alumina will be chlorinated, and the aluminum chloride then reduced by electrolysis. Important claims for the new processes are lower energy requirements (one-third less than obtainable in Hall cells) and reduced labor costs. Capital costs are said to be no greater than for conventional plants. While the announced intention is to produce the aluminum chlo¬ride from Bayer process alumina, the new chloride reduction process will eliminate the other raw materials, carbon and fluorides, required by the conventional Hall cells. The electrodes in the chloride cell will not be consumed on the reduction process and the electrolyte will have, as the name indicates, a chloride rather than a fluoride base. 2. Bauxite Definition and Origin. Bauxite is a naturally occurring raw material composed principally of a mixture of one or more of the hy¬drated aluminum oxide minerals gibbsite (Al2O2 3H2O), boehmite (Al2O3 H2O), and diaspore (Al2O, - H2O), and impurities of silica, iron oxide, titania, and other various elements in trace amounts. It is an end or near-end product of chemical weathering. Depending on the amount of iron impurities, the color of bauxite varies from dark red and brown to pink to white. Some bauxite is finely divided, free digging earthy material, while other forms are dense and rocky, requiring explosives in mining. Many gradational forms exist. It is one of the most variable of mineral raw materials in chemical composition and physical appearance. It is generally believed that bauxite deposits resulted from intense chemical weathering of aluminum-bearing rocks or formations under tropical or subtropical conditions with alternating wet and dry sea¬sons. Topographic conditions were favorable for drainage and the in-situ accumulation of aluminum, iron, and titanium oxides. There was low to moderate topographic relief with a minimum of erosion during long quiet periods in earth history.2 The occurrence of bauxite is widespread and it has been found on all continents except Antarctica. Production was reported from 27 countries in 1974, at which time total world production was over 79 million metric tons. Of this production 76% was from seven coun¬tries-Australia, Jamaica, Surinam, Guinea, USSR, Guyana, and Greece-which ranked in that order of production. Introduction Coal is the US's largest indigenous fossil fuel resource and is used to power 57% of this country's electrical generation (NCA, 1986). Congress, however, is focusing its attention on the acid rain issue and public sentiment is leaning toward further curtailments of SO2, NO, and particulates from utility and industrial coal-burning facilities. The Cool Water plant has proven that integrated-gasification-combined-cycle (IGCC) technology can reliably produce economical electrical power while limiting SO2, NOx, and particulates to a rate of only one-tenth of the federal New Source Performance Standards for coal-fired plants. Process water requirements at Cool Water are 40% less than those of a conventional coal-fired utility plant equipped with flue-gas desulfurization units for stack gas scrubbing, thus reducing waste water treatment requirements (Clark and Shorter, 1985). The IGCC technology employed at Cool Water has now been demonstrated to efficiently convert coal to electricity in an environmentally superior fashion. The Cool Water Coal Gasification Program is an unincorporated California association of six partners whose commitment is proving that the integration of gasification with combined cycle power production (IGCC) is commercially viable and environmentally safe. The 120 MW Cool Water plant began commercial production on June 24, 1984. The Program is operating it for a five-year commercial demonstration period. Introduction Some unique opportunities exist for industrial minerals in British Columbia and Alberta. The region's diversified geology, particularly in British Columbia, offers favorable environments for a rich variety of mineral resources. Many minerals have been produced for years. For some, however, the level of production is far less than the potential. Others have had production in the past, but are not currently produced. Still others are known to exist and may have been actively prospected. But they are not yet developed. In addition, a number of speculative possibilities have recently come to light. The potential significance is not fully confirmed, but is suggested in showings in favorable geologic settings. Location and geography British Columbia and Alberta are the westernmost provinces in Canada (Fig. 1). The region overlaps two major physiographic divisions of the country, the Cordillera and the Interior Plains. It also takes in a small segment of the Canadian Shield on the east. The entire territory is greater than 1.6 Mkm2 (618,000 sq miles). Most of British Columbia lies within the Cordillera, a mountainous belt some 800 km (500 miles) wide. The belt is made up of three main physiographic components, the Eastern, Interior, and Western subdivisions. The Eastern subdivision embraces the rugged, linear ranges of the Rocky Mountains, elevations between 2600 and 3300 m (8530 and 10,800 ft). They form a 100-km (62-mile) wide band straddling the BC-Alberta border and extending northwest across northern British Columbia. The Interior subdivision includes several ancient mountain ranges but is dominated by an intermountane plateau area of low relief (average elevation 1200 m or 3900 ft). The Western subdivision is dominated by the Coast Mountains (elevations between 1800 and 4000 m or 5900 and 13,123 ft). These form a band about 175 km (110 miles) wide into which are sculptured the spectacular fiords of the BC coastline. Alberta lies largely within the Interior Plains, a prairie region of low to moderate relief (elevations between 200 and 1200 m or 650 and 3940 ft) formed of nearly horizontal bedrock strata. The Plains surface rises gradually to the southwest toward the deformed belt of the Rocky Mountains, where the bedrock strata are upturned, folded, and faulted. To the east, the Plains merge with the Canadian Shield, which exposes the Precambrian crystalline basement of western Canada. The total population of the BC-Alberta region is about five million people. Minerals, forestry, and agriculture are the primary industries here. It has well developed infrastructures to service these industries. British Columbia is third among the Canadian provinces in metal mining - $1.1 billion in 1985 - and first in forest products. It is also second in hydro-electric power development. Alberta leads all provinces in total mineral production, largely due to its extensively developed petroleum and natural gas resources - $26.2 billion in 1985.

The original Radum aggregate plant, built by Henry Kaiser in 1931, is the oldest of the nearly 200 individual operations established by the Kaiser companies. Since that time it has been producing aggregate products primarily for the San Francisco Bay Area. Currently, and for many years, this plant has been listed as the Nation's No. One aggregate producer. Early this year a new $10,000,000 facility went on line replacing the old plant. Construction of the facilities was performed under the direction of Kaiser Engineers construction management teams. The existing plant continued to operate without interruption during the entire construction period.

Long before the dawn of recorded history, man began to dig into the earth's crust in a never ending search for useful materials. It has been well established that prehistoric man discovered flint. "The Flintstones" were aptly named. The flintknappers of southern England and Wales still exist today in ever dwindling numbers as they seek out chunks of flint. It is a well known fact that more than half of the earth's crust is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. Silica and silica containing materials have a great many uses in modern society. However, this material is potentially extremely hazardous to our health. Centuries before the Christian Era, Hippocrates wrote of a lung disease common to those who mined in hard rock. It is obvious to us that he was describing silicosis. It is also apparent from ancient writings, that the Egyptians were aware of this malady. Dioscorides also wrote on this subject in the fifth century, B.C. It is undoubtedly the oldest and best studied of the occupational lung diseases. It was certainly described by Agricola in his "De Re Metallica" published in 1556, in which he described lung disease among hard rock miners. This publication, I'm sure, is of special interest and perhaps known to many of you in the mining community. The original document was written in Latin and was translated in 1912 by two gentlemen, Hoover and Hoover. One of these translators was Herbert L. Hoover, a former president of the United States, who made his living before his presidency as a mining engineer.

It will also provide updated guidance for a spectrum of stakeholders including: • Consultants. • Contractors. • Planners, insurers. • Academia. • Government. Industry views will be crucial in the preparation of the Guide that will assist proactive & predictive planning and maintenance regimes and the availability of the asset. The Guide will enable changes in current working practices, share updated recommendations and provide a route map to implement future requirements for tunnel asset management. The generic content of the Guide would be applicable to North American practice.

Evidence has accumulated indicating that cultural change toward safer workplace behaviors is beginning to occur systematically in the coal industry. Through a range of programmatic mining company successes, enforcement and litigative actions, economic responses to competition, and integrated efforts by federal and state agencies, a broader participation of safety and training professionals is being achieved to address prioritized workplace problems at mines. Small steps in workplace-related improvements have been realized already, but the trends in industry safety statistics, coupled with focused programmatic initiatives, indicate that more definitive and systematic steps are occurring to improve safe behavior in the workplace routinely.

Theoretical development of comminution models has come about in the last 10 years. These models assume that the material being broken is homogeneous and that the compression or energy wave is uniform throughout the specimen. Obviously, this is not the case because most comminuted materials are rocks with either many phases and/or definite grain size. The mathematical models deriving the size distribution of daughter fragments resulting from the comminution of brittle, single particles are of two schools. The first model, proposed by Gilvarry in 1961, was based on the concept of volume, surface, and edge flaw activation. The second, proposed by Meloy in 1960, was based on the concept that the crack density is a function of the energy in the comminution wave. The flaw theory has run into increasing theoretical problems and is now being abandoned. On the other hand, the crack density theory has been expanded and has successfully considered the case where there are inhomogeneities in the comminutive wave. However, the main constraint of a homogeneity in the solid being comminuted has hitherto never been overcome. In this paper, a very general derivation of the crack density model is made for inhomogeneous solids by replacing the assumption of homogeneity with an arbitrary function, P(y), which describes the susceptibility of the material to comminution as a function of position. The restraints on this function, P(y), are very broad and, hence, the derivation is extremely general. General use of the equation derived necessitates a detailed a priori knowledge of both the fracture process and of the physical properties of the material being fractured; this knowledge is expressed in open form as, P(y), the linear probability density that a plane of fracture intersects at point y on an arbitrarily oriented line segment of total length xo through the original particle. From these assumptions, a general expression for the cumulative mass distribution of particles resulting from fracture is then postulated. It is: [ ] where, B(x), is a cumulative mass of material finer than size x, r is the average number of crack,, (y), is defined above and xo is the initial particle size. It is shown that suitable assumptions reduce the expression to the theoretical results of Gaudin and Meloy and to special forms of the empirical equations of Rosin-Rammler, Gaudin and Schuhmann. Semi quantitative agreement is demonstrated by Grimshaw with experimental results of a very complex fracture of heterogeneous sandstone blocks. A need is expressed for more theoretical development of P(y), and a more extensive experimental study of both homogeneous and heterogeneous fracture. The full mathematical derivation is presented for the first time in this paper. The general implications of the equation and its application are also discussed.

Process plant modeling in the computer environment has been developed over the past 40 years by implementing the comminution models formed by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre, University of Queensland, in the early 1970s. The models for the other processes in a mine value chain, such as blast fragmentation and flotation, were continuously developed and improved in parallel as well. Other research and commercial entities have also developed process modeling methodologies in the computer environment, which evolved as specialized commercial software or through equations set up in Excel spreadsheets. These were performed on a local computer, in thousands of simulations over a long period of time due to hardware limitations and the lack of a fully automated process. This limits the application of detailed process simulations for scale-up and strategic planning analysis, as they require many simulations to cover all possible scenarios which would take a lifetime when using local computers. The Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES), as the next generation of cloud-based software package, has made it possible to run simulations on the entire operation value chain in the same platform, including drilling and blasting, crushing, grinding, flotation, and other downstream process and material-handling units. This capability has allowed IES to handle multivariable simulations across the mine value chain, including pre-concentration and in-pit size reduction, and modify the process simultaneously.

"In recent years the gold mining industry has been challenged by declining metal prices as well as having to treat ores that have low grades and are refractory in nature. Many factors must be considered when metallurgical studies are designed to develop process design criteria for these type of ores. These factors are mostly related to the mineralogical and chemical compositions of the ores, the geological setting of the deposit and how the ore/waste will be mined, such as whether openpit or underground, the mine schedule, and the mine fleet type and capacity. The purpose of this paper is to provide an experience-based practical approach to how to select and characterize test samples as well as devise process development metallurgical studies for both oxide and refractory gold ores, and to provide insight into some of the matters that might go wrong during the course of the studies. This paper is intended as both a guide for someone new to the field and also as a reminder for those familiar with the field. IntroductionThe recent decline in ore grades and metal prices have challenged mining companies to reduce capital and operating costs associated with developing new mineral resources. In some cases, metallurgical studies have been sacrificed to prevent cost overruns resulting in inadequate mineralogical, chemical and metallurgical characterization. Consequences have included longer construction schedules, higher initial and working capital, higher operating costs and less than desirable plant performance (Whincup, 2010; Torres, Chaves and Meech, 1999).Mineralogy, geology, mining type and sequence, and the metallurgy of an orebody will determine the process development metallurgical study requirements and eventual process plant design. Therefore, once the geologist has an early indication of a prospective orebody, geologists, metallurgists, mining engineers, and social and environmental responsibility scientists should convene and devise a plan on how to exploit the orebody economically (Lunt, Ritchie and Fleay, 1997).Geologists may find a prospective orebody solely based on grade. However, if the orebody cannot be mined and processed economically, then it is deemed not to be a deposit. An example of this could be a refractory gold deposit, either sulfidic, carbonaceous or siliceous refractory or any combination of those, that may not be mined and processed economically due to reasons such as the physical location of the deposit, depth of the ore lode, or social and environmental concerns. Therefore, an early collaboration between all disciplines must be established.Each orebody may have its own unique mineralogical, geological and chemical characteristics (Guresin et al., 2012). These unique characteristics should be effectively sampled to reduce risks associated with process design and engineering efforts for the process development metallurgical studies. If the sample or samples are not representative of these unique characteristics, then the studies performed will be pointless. The project metallurgist in charge of conducting metallurgical studies should also possess general geology, mineralogy and mine engineering knowledge. Recommended readings are a book on understanding mineral deposits by Misra (2000) and articles on heap leach development by Scheffel (2014a and 2014b)."

Valley-fill structures built of blasted rock overburden from Appalachian mountaintop surface mines pose many reclamation challenges. The steep mountainous terrain, short valley lengths, and straight stream channel profiles create significant challenges to implementing fluvial geomorphic landform design in terms of both form and function, and from a safety and constructability perspective. The fluvial geomorphic landform design approach balances erosive and resistive forces by considering long-term climatic conditions, soil types, slope profiles and vegetation types. Commercial geomorphic landform design software tools do not specifically analyze the stability and factor of safety for the computer-designed landform slopes. This research investigated slope stability parameters and factors of safety between a traditional valley-fill design with a geomorphic landform alternative. Slope stability assessments were performed on two profile geometries. Finite-element modeling of a permitted valley-fill and a geomorphic design alternative indicated that slope angle and internal angles of friction associated with the gradation of the overburden greatly affected the designed factor of safety for both designs. The geomorphic designed slopes yielded the highest factors of safety out of 14 models analyzed with all cases having factors of safety over 2.0. The high factors of safety are attributed to shallow slopes and beneficial surface and internal drainage.

The main industrial minerals produced are non-metallic - clay, dolomite, limestone, pumice, salt, serpentine, and silica sand. The other minerals, some with minor production, include diatomite, feldspar, magnesite, sulphur, asbestos, and perlite. Energy and metallic minerals and aggregate are excluded from this account. These industrial minerals occur in a wide range of rock types and geological ages. For example clays are known from the weathering products of Cretaceous rhyolite and leaching of Eocene coal measures; from Quaternary weathering of contemporary loess and shallow marine sediments, and of greywacke of Triassic-Jurassic age; and from the hydrothermal alteration of Late Cenozoic acidic volcanic rocks.
