In the exploitation of porphyry-type deposits, the quality of the ore is mostly defined according to its grade. Besides the simplest distinction, ore-waste, several grade categories may exist and they correspond to the different ways in which the ore is further processed. At the time of mining the selection of the different categories is done from extensive information available from blast holes. But planning has to be done before this information is available and it is necessary for the geologist to forecast, from exploration and development data alone, the possible outcome of the selection done later on a block, a level, or the whole deposit and ultimately predict the ore reserves and value of the deposit. A good statement of this problem has been presented at the 1976 AIME annual meeting by Williamson and Hueller (1976). They have shown that, if the cut-off values are directly applied to the estimated grade of blocks, a gross overestimation of the recovered tonnage of ore (14%) will occur. This problem, now termed "the vanishing tons problem" (DaVid, 1977) seems to be common in many open-pit operations and it has been explained several times (DaVid, 1972; Huijbregts, 1975). In order to solve it l.Jilliamson and Mueller proposed a solution based on compiling masses and masses of blast hole data available from mined-out portions of the deposit. They derived empirical correction factors which provide for every block, given its estimated grade, the expected tonnage and average -grade of each category of material within that block. The purpose of our work is to repeat the same exercise but ignoring the blast holes data i.e. we want to derive the correction factors from the only DOH data. Doing this, we are more in the real conditions where the valuation of the mine and are reserve analysis has to be made before production actually starts. "The 2018 Elko Roundtable was held at the Red Lion in Elko, NV on March 15, 2018. The gracious host was once again Knight Piésold. Attendance was robust with representatives from more than 14 mining properties across Nevada representing nine corporations. Total attendance was at its highest in almost a decade. A high level of interest was also gauged by the number of companies with multiple attendees.The topic of water in mining was clearly a factor in creating the large show of interest. In terms of industry trends that are tracked annually, this topic had been absent from the list for more than 10 years (Deloitte, 2018) but was squarely planted there this year. And deservedly so. Three attending companies are signatories of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) which espouses a firm stance on water stewardship (ICMM, 2017).How’s the water?It is reported that water scarcity affects more than 40 percent of the world’s population (Deloitte, 2018). Consumption of water in the United States, based on the last detailed census, entails only 1.5 percent usage by the mining industry. The largest users are reportedly thermoelectric power and irrigation, combining for more than 75 percent of the U.S. consumption. During the prior census period, water usage at mines was up dramatically (USGS, 2014).Mine water source usage is primarily a mix of ground water and saline or fresh surface water resources. Over the previous period, saline sources experienced the greatest percentage in growth as a mine water source, nearly doubling in use. Nevada ranks second as a state nationally in mine water consumption. California is the leader, and Nevada is immediately followed by Utah and Alaska (USGS, 2014).Water rights in Nevada and the ongoing litigation at the state level, particularly over the Humboldt River basin, have elevated the concern over the supply of water and have raised the interest regarding the topic of water across the mining industry as well as within other industries.The Elko Roundtable meeting began with a safety share and introductions, and included each attendee mentioned a water problem or solution that he or she would like to discuss during the day. An interesting list of subtopics was developed from this round robin and yielded the following most common themes:• Mine pit dewatering during operation and pit wall stability.• Draindown from tailings dams and heap leach pads and dealing with this at closure.• Post closure pit lakes, pit lake water quality and associated water rights."

The presence of appreciable quantity of clay mineral in Indian hematite ore needs an attrition technique using screw scrubber in the beneficiation circuit to remove the ultrafine clays and avoid downstream operational problems. Spectroscopic analysis revealed that iron ore samples obtained from the Barbil region of Odisha contain a high amount of silica and alumina in the form of clay minerals (e.g., kaolinite) contributed as a loss on ignition (LOI) in the iron-making process. Iron ore fines of below 10 mm size were subjected to a laboratory-scale screw scrubber, and the effectiveness of scrubbing as well as the pelletization of the scrubbed product was investigated. The screw scrubber in the beneficiation circuit helps to remove the clay minerals, causes an increase in iron values from 63.65% Fe(T) to 66.18%Fe(T), with improved physical (CCS of 325 kg/pellet) and metallurgical (RDI of 2.24%) pellet properties.

The advantages derived from the use of pellet burdens in blast furnaces are so great, that hematite ores are being converted into pellets in greater quantities each year. The conversion of these ores into pellets appears on the surface to be relatively simple. In reality, this is not so. Serious difficulties are encountered in drying these pellets that do not exist in the drying of taconite concentrate pellets. The ores that present problems are goethite and earthy hematites. Green pellets prepared from these ores have very law shock temperatures, 200-600° F. The shock temperature of a green pellet according to our definition is the highest initial temperature to which a green pellet may be exposed without suffering decrepitation. Decrepitation may involve spalling, fracturing or total disintegration. The poor shock properties of these green pellets result from the inability of the vaporized water to escape freely and easily as it is formed with¬out affecting the integrity of the pellet. As a consequence, the pellets must be carefully dried prior to induration. This careful treatment is costly. The slow drying process restricts productivity and requires larger furnaces than desired. The use of an additive to elevate the shock temperature of the green pellets would increase productivity. Bentonite is used in some pellet plants to improve balling but it raises the shock temperature only slightly. Nalco became interested in the shock temperature problem because of its activity in the development of organic pelletizing aids for taconite concentrates. The findings reported here are an outgrowth of our experimental work on the development of shock temperature additives.

"Pareto analysis was used to investigate the failures database of a Hitachi EX1900 hydraulic shovel over one year of continuous operation. The hydraulic system and hydraulic links, hoses and piping were identified as the most critical system and subsystem, respectively. A three-parameter gamma distribution function was identified as the best fit for a probabilistic modeling of the time between failures (TBFs). This distribution was used in a Monte Carlo reliability analysis of the hydraulic system. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), within the context of a time series analysis of the TBFs, was proposed as a viable alternative to the traditional technique of distribution fitting. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) metric was used to compare the two models. The MAPE value that resulted from the ARIMA was 66 percent smaller than that from the traditional technique in predicting the TBFs. Se identificó al sistema hidráulico y a los enlaces hidráulicos, mangueras y tuberías como el sistema y subsistema más importantes, respectivamente. Se identificó una función de distribución de tres parámetros gamma como el más apto para un modelado de probabilidades del tiempo transcurrido entre las fallas (Tabes por sus siglas en inglés). Esta distribución fue usada en un análisis de confiabilidad Monte Carlo para un sistema hidráulico. El promedio de movimiento integrado auto-regresivo (ARIMA por sus siglas en inglés), dentro del contexto de análisis de serie temporal de los TBFs, fue propuesto como una alternativa viable a la tradicional técnica de ajuste de distribución. Se usó el porcentaje de la media absoluta de error (MAPE) para comparar los dos modelos. In the magnetite iron ore pelletization process, oxidation of magnetite followed by sintering of the oxidized magnetite (hematite) is desirable. Optimum preheating time & temperature and roasting time & temperature is required to get the desired properties of the pellets with magnetite, hematite, and hematite–magnetite blend. In order to utilize the magnetite resources in a current induration furnace, which is designed for hematite resources, detailed pelletization studies have been carried out to optimize the firing cycle for magnetite concentrate as well as magnetite with hematite concentrate. Under optimum conditions, such as preheating temperature 1000–1150 °C, preheating time 10 min, roasting temperature 1250 °C and roasting time 7.5 min, the cold compression strength (CCS) of magnetite roasted pellets was 325 kg/p, and this was due to recrystallization of secondary hematite particles, and development of the strong slag bond between primary and secondary hematite particles. The strength of hematite concentrate pellets was 260 kg/p. From laboratory studies, it was found that without disturbing the induration furnace firing cycle, which is designed for hematite ore ~5%, magnetite concentrate can be used along with hematite concentrate in pellet blend and the strength of the pellets was 270 kg/p. As the magnetite concentrate increases in the blend beyond 5%, the preheating zone residence time should be increased or a supply of extra oxygen is required. Laboratory as well as plant investigation has shown that the addition of magnetite to the hematite mix blend improved the strength of the pellets compared to hematite pellet alone.

The iron ore beneficiation plant at Serra-Azul Mines of ArcelorMittal, Brazil operates at a rated capacity of 3.2 million tons per year. The ore is concentrated using magnetic separation, jigging, hydrocyclones and spiral concentrators. The tailings from the process plant are generated from classifier overflow of 135 tons per hour dry solids and thickener underflow of 48 tons per hour dry solids. A systematic experimental program was carried out using Multi-gravity separator (MGS), and wet high-intensity magnetic separator (WHIMS) for recovering the iron values from both of the tailing streams while minimizing the total quantity of tailings to be discarded. The classifier overflow contained 32.3 percent iron, 49.9 percent silica and 2.18 percent alumina and was 45 percent finer than 45 microns in size. The thickener underflow sample contained 47.3 percent iron, 27.6 percent silica and 2.49 percent alumina and was 16 percent finer than 45 microns in size. Separation results on the classifier overflow sample with the MGS indicated that a concentrate containing 62.1 percent of iron, 10.8 percent silica and 0.36 percent alumina can be achieved with a weight recovery of 24.5 percent. The results with WHIMS at 6500 Gauss indicated that concentrate containing 62.6 percent iron, 8.3 percent silica, and 0.65 percent alumina can be achieved at a weight recovery of 34.7 percent. 4.7 percent. WHIMS studies at 6500 Gauss on thickener underflow sample indicated that a concentrate containing 61.4 percent iron, 8.8 percent silica, and 1.74 percent alumina can be achieved at a weight recovery of 57.2 percent. Based on these results, and further in-house test works, a WHIMS installation was adopted for the recovery of iron values from the tailings in the operating plant at ArcelorMittal Serra Azul Mines, Brazil.

The Nevada Moly Operation of Anaconda Minerals Co., (a molybdenum/copper ore body) was initiated in 1978, with a contract to Bechtel Civil and Minerals Inc. for construction of a mining and milling facility near Tonopah, NV. Ground was broken on the concentrator portion of the project in August 1979$ with a multi-phased startup of the mill beginning in June 1981. Processing design tonnage of 20 000 t/d (22,000 STPD) was reached in early 1982. Major pitfalls of rapid design and implementation of engineering, construction, and startup are considered. The operation of the concentrator including SAG milling, ball milling, bulk rougher flotation, copper/moly separation, moly regrinding and cleaning, thickening, and product loadout are discussed.

The extraction of nickel has been carried out by the hollow fiber membrane technique using D2EHPA as the mobile carrier from the manganese nodule leach liquor after separation of Cu(II), Zn(II) and Co(II). The experiments were designed according to central composite design (CCD), which is a response surface methodology. The process parameters used for the experimental design were: pH, concentration of D2EHPA in the membrane phase, flow rate and H2SO4 concentration in the strip solution. Based on the analysis of variance, a reduced quadratic model was found to best fit the experimental data. The process parameters were optimized to maximize the nickel flux and the optimized conditions were flow rate: 630 mL/min; pH: 6.37; D2EHPA: 1.15 mol/L (1,150 mol/m3) and H2SO4: 2.39% (430.2 mol/m3), for a maximum nickel flux of 7.08 x 10-5 mol/m2.s, which was in good agreement with the actual Ni flux of 6.99 x 10-5 mol/m2.s.

In an exchange of views with the Program Chairman for the Technical Session on Industrial Minerals and Investment in Foreign Countries, it was agreed that it would be more interesting to approach the problem of mineral investment in foreign countries in a more general framework and not confine it to industrial minerals. Therefore, this Bureau of Mines report is proposed to examine current attitudes toward investments in foreign mineral resources and restraints that they impose on investments necessary to assure supply for future global mineral needs.

As the dust begins to settle and mining companies begin to take stock of the battle, Newmont Mining Corp. will be one that is standing strong with just a few scrapes and bruises thanks in large part to the leadership of president and chief executive officer Gary Goldberg and his right hand man and chief operating officer, Chris Robison.As he closes in on retirement (for a second time) Robison, a third-generation miner from Nevada, took time to speak with Mining Engineering about a 33-year career in which, among other things, he is credited with not just helping Newmont survive the turbulent times but with steering the company to a safer, more productive and more profitable heading.“I think we did it better than anyone else,” Robison said when asked how the company fared during the past five years. “We didn’t talk about it a lot, we just put together a strategy and we delivered.”What Newmont, the world’s second-largest gold mining company by production, delivered since Robison took the position of chief operating officer in 2013 are improvements in costs, porduction, projects and safety.Operating under the mantra of “live within your means,” Robison was pulled out of retirement from Rio Tinto and into a challenging situation at Newmont. The price of gold was in a nose dive from a high of nearly $58/g ($1,800/oz) and heading to levels closer to $38.60/g ($1,200 oz).“Newmont is a big ship that can’t be turned, but has to be steered,” said Robison. “We recognized that we had to set a new course. The direction the ship was going was great for $1,600 to $1,800/oz gold but we were chasing ounces.”Like the rest of the gold mining sector before the falling gold prices, Newmont was focused on volume and was looking for gold wherever it could be found. The slogan at Newmont in 2011 was “7 million ounces a year by 2017.”When Robison came on board it was a different reality.“We had to begin focusing on value over volume as the cornerstone of Newmont going forward,” he said."

"INTRODUCTION Control of target stream acidity is widely used in MIW (mining influenced water). Tailoring pH (a measure of acidity) finds application for controlling key chemistry in both process and waste streams. Traditional lime addition for neutralization and precipitation is most often used but has high reagent costs and results in large amounts of mixed metal sludge requiring costly disposal. A new adaptation of BPS’s patented DEMET™ technology (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform offers a potentially improved and “reagentless” alternative to traditional chemical addition for pH adjustment. Electricity rather than chemical addition utilized in BPS’s proprietary approach controllably tailors target stream pH. The method offers a simple, low-cost processing technique yielding cleaner treatment chemistry. BPS’s “green” approach may yield lower operating (OPEX) and life cycle costs and significant reductions (up to 50%) in sludge generation compared to conventional lime treatment. It can also allow new opportunities to generate revenue via selective recovery of valuable processing byproducts. Specific savings and revenues depend on the target site chemistries, details, and processing goals. A more detailed discussion of the process and its operational principles may be found in Reference One.[1] Here application of the BPS treatment to POx (Pressure Oxidation) leaching as an alternative to traditional chemical addition is examined. An example operation process flow for gold mining is considered.[2] Promising processing points for potentially replacing conventional processes with DEMET are noted. The possibilities for lowering OPEX costs, lessening sludge creation, and capturing various valuable byproducts and residuals are examined. Financial life cycle benefit estimates of the principal gains provided by DEMET application to the example operation are noted. Extension and generalization of the analyses to a wider range of scenarios is explored."

This study investigates the changes in seismic velocity of rockmass before and after three major seismic events to determine any potential identifiable precursory velocity changes associated with these events. Induced stress measurement is one of the challenging tasks in deep underground mining, with extreme impacts on the safety and stability of the mine. This study used p-wave passive seismic tomography to image the velocity redistribution within a rockmass, which can indicate induced stress level changes in the rockmass and detect the velocity changes that might precede a major seismic event or a rockburst. The ultimate goal of this research focus is to develop another tool for the deep-mining community that will help to increase safety and efficiency. For this purpose, the hypothesis of conventional mechanics, which implies induced stress at the hypocenter (as inferred by the p-wave velocity) increases until the seismic event occurs, is evaluated. It is found that the p-wave velocity did not increase at any of the three hypocenters prior to the seismic event occurring; however, the p-wave velocity did increase in the closest “zone center” for two of the three events.

Potash production from natural brines of the Bonneville Salt Flats has a comparatively long history dating back to the start of World War I. However, it vas sot until the late 1930's that a successful commercial potash operation was achieved by a firm known as Bonneville Ltd. While improvements in operating techniques, pond design and equipment have been incorporated as they became available it should he understood that the basic technology developed in the late 30's and early 1940's by Bonneville Ltd, for potash production has not been changed significantly. The purpose of this paper is to present a brief review of the history, geology and hydrology of the Bonneville Potash operations and discuss the cur¬rent methods employed for brine collection, solar evaporation and the recovery of potash and other brine chemicals. A detailed study of the hydrogeology of the Bonneville Salt Flats wan made by L. J. Turk,1 Ph.D. thesis for Stanford University in 1969, under the auspices, of Kaiser Chemicals the Industrial Chemicals Division of Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation. Turk's thesis furnished much of the information presented in this paper.

Sustainable Development is a very broad initiative in the mining industry, with major components running over the entire life of the mine. It likely commences with pre-exploration permitting and continues to post-mining final closure and possible land reuse. Most major mining corporations embrace the sustainability initiative, either out of a sense of social responsibility or out of necessity in order to continue doing business. But many may view the overall initiative as an added ?cost of doing business.? In many elements of sustainability, there clearly can be added cost ? some as simple as complying with self-imposed sustainability reporting. Fortunately, one major element of sustainable development can clearly be shown to reduce costs ? energy resource management. This paper will describe how the mining industry sustainable development effort differs from other industries, but can benefit from their experience in energy resource management. The mining industry can utilize proven methods from other industries to further their energy management efforts. In addition, many of the resources developed and employed to promote better energy resource management in non-mining industrial settings will be listed.

Herein, the coal-based reduction was proposed to utilize the ferronickel slag of Jingchuan company. An excellent index with metallization rate of 99.22%, iron grade of 77.91%, and iron recovery of 92.79% was obtained at carbon addition coefficient 2.0, reduction temperature 1573 K, reduction time 60 min, the particle size of coal and ferronickel slag − 2.0 mm, and CaO content 15%. The 2FeO·SiO2 was reduced to Fe and SiO2 with the increase of temperature. The CaO could promote the reduction of iron oxide. Most of the sulfides (Fe, Cu, Co, and Ni) in the sulfonium were reduced to metal. The reduction degree increased with the reduction time and reduction temperature. The higher reduction temperature represented the higher peak value of reduction rate and the shorter time of reaching the peak value. The isothermal reduction process included three stages: early stage, middle stage, and late stage. The mechanism function were f(α) = 1/2(1 − α)3, f(α) = 3/2(1 − α)4/3[(1 − α)−1/3 − 1]− 1, and f(α) = 4(1 − α)[− ln(1 − α)]3/4, respectively. The activation energy of three stages was 183.498 kJ·mol−1, 420.077 kJ·mol−1, and 656.619 kJ·mol−1, respectively.

The Pima Mining Company lies 20 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona, and some 45 miles north of the Mexican border. The mill is situated on a hillside overlooking Tucson and the Santa Cruz Valley, the ground generally sloping northeast at a 2.5 percent grade. The hillside location allows for gravity flow generally through the plant as well as for: tailing disposal.

Pine Point Mines is located in the Northwest Territories of Canada, about 500 miles north of Edmonton, Alberta (figure 1). Lead-zinc ore is found in numerous localized deposits along a generally east-west trending reef of Devonian dolomite, about 5 miles south of Great Slave Lake. A pumping-test program was carried out in 1968 to guide the design of dewatering systems for several open pits that are partially or wholly below the natural ground-water levels. The hydrogeologic conditions, methods employed and results obtained are discussed.

International Minerals and Chemical Corporation operates one of six potash mines in the Carlsbad potash basin. More than 90 percent of America's potash is produced at Carlsbad and IMC accounts for about one-fifth of that amount, Since the Company began operations in 1941 it has mined nearly 50 million tons of ore. Of the two types of ore mined at Carlsbad the principal tonnage is sylvinite in which sylvite-potassium chloride-is the ore mineral. It is produced by IMC as well as by all other mines in the area, In addition to sylvinite IMC is the exclusive producer of langbeinite ore--potassium-magnesium sulfate. From its two ores, International produces a spectrum of 8 high-quality agricultural and industrial chemical products.
